The making of a land patrimony for the benefit of religious missions is profoundly linked to territorial construction in the colonies but is rarely examined from the angle of ecclesiastical governmentality over the ceded lands. This analysis highlights three complementary processes for understanding the role of religious mission land heritage in territorial reconfigurations. First, this article examines the process of “land sanctuarization”, which materializes territorial anchoring through the crystallization of land rights granted to religious missions over customary lands previously presumed to be “vacant”. Next, it explores the formation of an “ecclesiastical dominium”, manifested in the dismantling of state missions and their free transfer, explicit or tacit, to religious missions under concession or agreement regimes. This reveals the exercise of state power over the land heritage of religious missions, positioning them as structuring axes and administrative intermediaries for public services, thus giving rise to an ecclesiastical governmentality that drives territorial production and reconfiguration. Finally, postcolonial dynamics reveal the resurgence of new spatial polarities shaped by the complexity of evolving religious actors along the center–periphery axis of a recomposing territorialization. This study underscores the importance of a transversal approach to better govern the land legacies of religious missions, fostering a pluralistic reterritorialization of postcolonial societies in central Africa. A surface-wave-assisted, dual-band, circularly polarized reconfigurable intelligent surface is proposed that allows arbitrary beam-shaping capability within the [4.35 GHz–4.5 GHz] and [11.8 GHz–12.3 GHz] frequency bands. In particular, alongside the proposed physical design of the surface, a genetic algorithm-based design framework is introduced to enable the synthesis of complex radiation patterns beyond simple beam steering. It is shown that the phase profiles obtained from the proposed optimization scheme naturally lead to the excitation of surface waves, which facilitate arbitrary beam shaping by satisfying the local power conservation condition between the normally impinging and arbitrarily reflected waves. To physically construct the proposed surface, cascaded symmetric unit cells are employed to facilitate circular polarization operation and realize dual-band operation. Furthermore, varactor diodes are incorporated into the design of unit cells so that the reflection phase can be independently and continuously tuned across the two frequency bands, with a tuning range of 300 degrees. The versatility of the proposed surface is demonstrated through design examples that achieve (i) unidirectional beam steering, (ii) multi-directional beam steering, and (iii) sector-beam formation within each frequency band. Long-term participation in marathon running involves complex psychological processes, yet existing research predominantly focuses on static, single-time-point analyses. This study addresses the gap by longitudinally examining the psychological evolution of an elite Chinese marathon runner (119 marathons completed) to uncover dynamic shifts from novice to master(s) level athlete stages. A longitudinal single-case study was conducted using inductive thematic analysis. Data included in-depth interviews, observational records, and archival materials spanning three life stages (youth, middle age, maturity). Five experts validated the credibility and validity of the findings. The results show that the runner’s psychological trajectory followed a three-phase model: competitive drive (youth: external achievement motivation), reflective transformation (middle age: health prioritization and identity reconfiguration), and value reconstruction (maturity: legacy mission and lifelong running). These stages were shaped by the interplay of achievement motivation, social roles, and physiological changes. Notably, the transition mirrored China’s marathon culture shift from elitism to mass participation. This study proposes a novel “motivation-physicality-society” interaction model, challenging static theories of sports psychology. It highlights how long-term runners dynamically balance extrinsic and intrinsic motivations while embedding personal growth within socio-cultural transformations. The findings offer theoretical foundations for optimizing psychological support systems and promoting sustainable marathon engagement. Full article

This paper explores the concept of evolutionary urban resilience by framing cities as complex, open, and adaptive Social-Ecological-Technological Systems (SETS), shaped by multi-scalar dynamics, systemic uncertainty, and interdependent crises. It challenges the reductionist view of resilience as a fixed capacity or linear sequence of risk management phases, and instead proposes a process-based paradigm rooted in learning, creativity, and the ability to navigate disequilibrium. The framework defines urban resilience as a continuous and iterative transformation process, supported by: (i) a combination of tangible and intangible qualities activated according to problem typology; (ii) cross-domain processes involving infrastructures, flows, governance, networks, and community dynamics; and (iii) the engagement of diverse agents in shared decision-making and coordinated action. These dimensions unfold across three incremental and interdependent scenarios—baseline, critical, and chronic crisis—forming a ladder of resilience that guides communities through escalating challenges. Special emphasis is placed on the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as relational and adaptive tools enabling distributed intelligence and inclusive governance. The framework also outlines concrete operational and policy implications for cities aiming to build anticipatory and transformative resilience capacities. Applied to the case of Taranto, the approach offers insights into how structurally fragile communities facing conflicting adaptive trajectories can unlock transformative potential. Ultimately, the paper calls for a shift from government to governance, from control to co-creation, and from reactive adaptation to chaos generativity, recasting urban resilience as an evolving project of collective agency, systemic reconfiguration, and co-production of emergent urban futures. Structural symmetry preservation and breaking play important roles in optical manipulation at subwavelength scales. By precisely engineering the symmetry of the nanostructures, metasurfaces can effectively realize various optical functions such as polarization control, wavefront shaping, and on-chip optical integration, with promising applications in information photonics, bio-detection, and flexible devices. In this article, we review the recent advances in chiral and achiral metasurfaces based on symmetry manipulation. We first introduce the fundamental principles of chiral and achiral metasurfaces, including methods for characterizing chirality and mechanisms for phase modulation. Then, we review the research on chiral metasurfaces based on material type and structural dimensions and related applications in high-sensitivity chiral sensing, reconfigurable chiral modulation, and polarization-selective imaging. We then describe the developments in the application of achiral metasurfaces, particularly in polarization-multiplexed holography, phase-gradient imaging, and polarization-insensitive metalenses. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future development of chiral and achiral metasurfaces. Full article

Amid rapid digital transformation in the global economy, digital innovation capability has emerged as a strategic asset for enterprises to cultivate competitive advantages. However, challenges such as the complexity of digital resource integration, limitations of traditional innovation paradigms, and ecosystem fragmentation hinder the development of this capability. Combining innovation ecosystem theory with dynamic capability perspectives, this study analyzed data from 312 Chinese enterprises to examine how enterprise innovation ecosystems shape digital innovation capability. Key findings include the following: (1) the composition, operation, and relationships of enterprise innovation ecosystems exert significant positive effects on digital innovation capability, with the composition dimension demonstrating the most substantial impact.; (2) digital innovation capability comprises three hierarchical components—Digital technological capability (Foundational Capability), Digital technology-enabled Innovation Capability (Evolutionary Capability), and Value reconfiguration capability (Transformational Capability)—all dynamically supported by ecosystem interactions; (3) dynamic capabilities serve as critical mediators between ecosystems and digital innovation capability. Theoretically, this research integrates ecosystem and capability theories to reveal a transformation pathway of “ecosystem embeddedness → dynamic capabilities → digital innovation”. Practically, it offers guidance for resource allocation, ecosystem optimization, and governance, advancing sustainable digital innovation ecosystems. Full article

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities for business model innovation in digital platform enterprises. Despite growing interest in AI applications, the specific mechanisms through which digital platform firms leverage AI to drive business model innovation remain insufficiently explored, particularly from the integrated perspective of resource mobilization and organizational capability reconfiguration. To address this gap, this study conducts a single-case analysis of a highly successful digital platform enterprise in China. This study explores how digital platform enterprises can effectively utilize AI technologies to support business model innovation. The findings reveal that AI technologies enable digital platform enterprises to develop organizational capabilities in intelligent connectivity, intelligent development, and intelligent governance. AI-enabled organizational capabilities in digital platform enterprises evolve through three progressive stages: AI-assisted, AI-augmented, and AI-integrated. At each stage, these capabilities are shaped through different types of resource actions—namely, entry-oriented resource patchwork, depth-oriented resource arrangements, and coordination-oriented resource orchestration. This study offers practical insights for digital platform enterprises seeking to leverage AI technologies for business model innovation. By integrating the concepts of resource actions and organizational capabilities, it provides a dynamic explanation of how AI drives innovation in digital platform business models. The research contributes to the theoretical advancement of human-AI integration and resource action frameworks, offering actionable intelligence for the broader industry. Full article

This article examines the land-use politics of recreation development in rural China. Extending the lens of spatial informality, it analyzes how the appropriation and acquisition of space by small suburban leisure enterprises have constituted a de facto vehicle for rural spatial reconfiguration amidst land-use constraints. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and case studies, we illuminate emerging scenarios in which inbound businesses burgeoned through the production of informal spaces, which were subsequently formalized or tolerated by local governments geared towards social economic growth. More so, we reveal the potential and limitations of such an informal-to-formal approach for rural spatial reconfiguration by showing how its sustainability and survival depend upon the enterprises’ ability to enter into a tacit alliance of interests with local authorities. This article casts new light on emerging bottom-up processes of spatial reconfiguration, alongside its repercussions for local suburbs, in the development of rural tourism and suburban leisure. It further suggests that, as an analytical approach, a nuanced understanding of rural restructuring under the recent national rural revitalization strategy can benefit from moving beyond the sole emphasis on formal institutions to analyze the role played by ordinary market actors and their spatial practices that shape rural territories and spatial relationships. The transition from 5G to 6G wireless systems introduces new challenges at the physical layer, including the need for higher frequency operations, massive MIMO deployment, advanced beamforming techniques, and sustainable energy harvesting mechanisms. A plethora of feature articles, review and white papers, and roadmaps elaborate on the perspectives and research challenges of wireless systems, in general, including both unified physical and cyber space. Hence, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the technological challenges and recent advancements in wireless communication hardware that underpin the development of next-generation networks, particularly 6G. Emphasizing the physical layer, the study explores critical enabling technologies including beamforming, massive MIMO, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications, wireless power transfer, and energy harvesting. These technologies are analyzed in terms of their functional roles, implementation challenges, and integration into future wireless infrastructure. Beyond traditional physical layer components, the paper also discusses the role of reconfigurable RF front-ends, innovative antenna architectures, and user-end devices that contribute to the adaptability and efficiency of emerging communication systems. In addition, the inclusion of application-driven paradigms such as digital twins highlights how new use cases are shaping design requirements and pushing the boundaries of hardware capabilities. By linking foundational physical-layer technologies with evolving application demands, this work provides a holistic perspective aimed at guiding future research directions and informing the design of scalable, energy-efficient, and resilient wireless communication platforms for the Future Internet. Specifically, we first try to identify the demands and, in turn, explore existing or emerging technologies that have the potential to meet these needs. Especially, there will be an extended reference about the state-of-the-art antennas for massive MIMO terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Full article

The controllable transport of droplets on solid surfaces is crucial for many applications, from water harvesting to bio-analysis. Herein, we propose a novel droplet transport controlling method, reconfigurable orbital electrowetting (ROEW) on inclined slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), which enables controllable transport and dynamic handling of droplets by non-contact reconfiguration of orbital electrodes. The flexible reconfigurability is attributed to the non-contact wettability modulation and reversibly deformable flexible electrodes. ROEW graphically customizes stable wettability pathways by real-time and non-contact printing of charge-orbit patterns on SLIPS to support the continuous transport of droplets. Benefiting from the fast erase-writability of charges and the movability of non-contact electrodes, ROEW enables reconfiguration of the wetting pathways by designing electrode shapes and dynamically switching electrode configurations, achieving controllable transport of various pathways and dynamic handling of droplet sorting and mixing. ROEW provides a new approach for reconfigurable, electrode-free arrays and reusable microfluidics. Full article

Rome, historically regarded as a monumental center of Catholic Christendom, now stands as a multi-layered environment shaped by diverse religious communities whose overlapping architectures, rites, and narratives expand the city’s cultural memory. This article employs Warburg’s Mnemosyne methodology to investigate how symbolic motifs, architectural forms, and intangible practices—from Eastern Orthodox iconography to the Great Mosque of Rome’s transnational design—migrate, adapt, and reconfigure within Rome’s urban fabric. Drawing on interdisciplinary approaches from cultural memory studies, religious studies, and urban geography, it reveals how minority communities—Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox Christian, Protestant, Methodist, and Scientology—act as “memory agents”, negotiating visibility and introducing new heritage layers that challenge monolithic perceptions of Rome’s identity. The analysis underscores that intangible heritage, such as chanting, prayer, and interfaith festivals, is equally central to understanding how collective memory is produced and transmitted. Tensions arise when key stakeholders do not validate these emerging cultural forms or question their “authenticity”, reflecting the contested nature of heritage-making. Ultimately, Rome’s religious plurality, shaped by migration and historical transformations, emerges as a dynamic memoryscape. By recognizing the vital role of minority faiths in heritage-making, this study contributes to broader debates on cultural pluralism, super-diversity, and the evolving definitions of religious and cultural heritage in contemporary global cities. As populations age globally, governments face mounting challenges in reconfiguring healthcare and housing systems to support aging-in-place. This study offers a comparative analysis of South Korea and the United Kingdom, examining how each country integrates digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), telecare, and smart housing systems, into their aging strategies. South Korea employs a centralized, technology-driven approach that prioritizes the national rollout of AI-enabled smart homes and digital health infrastructure. In contrast, the UK advances a decentralized, community-based model emphasizing social housing, localized care delivery, and telecare integration. Despite these differing trajectories, both nations face shared limitations, including high implementation costs, digital literacy barriers, and concerns about data privacy. Critically, the study finds that the success of aging-in-place efforts is shaped not only by technological capacity but also by governance dynamics, political continuity, and institutional coordination. In response, the paper proposes policy recommendations alongside an ethical framework grounded in transparency, autonomy, informed consent, and equity. Sustainable aging-in-place strategies require not only innovative technologies, but also inclusive governance and ethically robust design to ensure accessibility, trust, and long-term impact. Research on modular robots for space exploration has primarily focused on reconfiguration, with limited attention given to the maneuverability in space environment, which is essential for harnessing the advantages of reconfiguration. In this paper, a modular snake-like robot (MSR) is designed, which is expected to emulate a snake to navigate complex environments and employ the reconfiguration capability for on-site shape-shifting. To this end, a snake-like motion analysis and planning method is proposed for MSR. Firstly, we explore the feasibility of utilizing modules in realizing snake-like motion, including functional compatibility and structural constraints. Secondly, we analyze the kinematics of MSR and design joint coordination motion schemes to meet the requirements of snake-like motion. Finally, a path planning method based on reinforcement learning is proposed, which fully considers the motion characteristics and the structural constraints. Through motion analysis and planning, a balance between environmental adaptability and versatility can be achieved. Simulations of comparisons and potential applications further demonstrate the significant advantages of MSR in space exploration. Full article

This article explores the dynamic interplay between theological and secular paradigms in shaping contemporary political movements and social justice discourse, with a particular focus on the Culture War surrounding reproductive rights and gender identity. It examines the historical transition from the Judeo–Christian tradition to modern secular frameworks, highlighting how core theological concepts—such as imago Dei, the sanctity of life, and divine sovereignty—have been reinterpreted and secularized. In the context of an increasingly secular world and the resurgence of religion in a post-secular society, the article leverages Eric Voegelin’s philosophical framework to deepen the dialogue on the Culture War and secularization. The analysis argues that modern social justice movements and ideology can be seen as immanentizing the eschaton and moral order, where transcendent values are reconfigured as temporal, political, and cultural constructs for ultimate justice and redemption. By tracing modern concepts of social justice back to their theological roots, this article aims to enrich debates on secularization and the ideological divisions fueling the Culture War, fostering pathways toward a more cohesive and less polarized political landscape. The Zaatari Camp in Jordan exemplifies how Syrian refugees transform a planned grid settlement into an organic urban environment through socio-spatial adaptation, reflecting their cultural identity and territorial practices. This study investigates the camp’s morphological evolution, analyzing how refugees reconfigure public and private spaces to prioritize privacy, security, and community cohesion. Using qualitative methods—including archival maps, photographs, and field observations—the research reveals how formal public areas are repurposed into private shelter extensions, creating zones of influence that mirror traditional Arab-Islamic urban patterns. Key elements such as mosques, markets, and hierarchical street networks emerge as cultural anchors, shaped by refugees’ prior urban experiences. However, this organic growth introduces challenges, such as blocked streets and undefined spaces, which hinder safety and service delivery, underscoring tensions between informal urbanization and structured planning. The findings advocate urban resilience and participatory planning frameworks that integrate socio-cultural values, emphasizing defensible boundaries, interdependence, and adaptable design. Refugees’ territorial behaviors—such as creating diagonal streets and expanding shelters—highlight their agency in reshaping urban systems, challenging conventional top-down approaches. This research focuses on land-use dynamics, sustainable cities, and adaptive urban systems in crisis contexts. By bridging gaps between displacement studies and urban theory, the study offers insights into fostering social inclusion and equitable infrastructure in transient settlements. Future research directions, including comparative analyses of refugee camps and cognitive mapping, aim to deepen understanding of socio-spatial resilience. Ultimately, this work contributes to global dialogues on informal urbanization and culturally responsive design, advocating for policies that align with the Sustainable Development Goals to rebuild cohesive, resilient urban environments in displacement settings.
