In recent years, the generation of circularly polarized attosecond pulses has garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in ultrafast spectroscopy and, notably, in chiral-sensitive molecular detection. The traditional methods for generating such pulses often involve complex laser configurations or specially engineered targets, limiting their experimental feasibility. In this study, we present a streamlined and effective approach to producing circularly polarized attosecond pulses by employing a linearly polarized laser field in conjunction with a stereosymmetric linear molecule, 1-butyne (C4H6). The generation of high-order harmonics by this molecular system reveals a distinct plateau in the perpendicular polarization component, which facilitates the generation of isolated attosecond pulses with circular polarization. Through a detailed analysis of the time-dependent charge density dynamics across atomic sites, we identify the atoms primarily responsible for the emission of circularly polarized harmonics in the plane orthogonal to the driving field. Moreover, we explore the role of multi-orbital contributions in shaping the polarization properties of the harmonic spectra. Our findings underscore the importance of molecular symmetry and the electronic structure in tailoring the harmonic polarization, and they demonstrate a viable pathway for using circularly polarized attosecond pulses to probe molecular chirality. This method offers a balance between simplicity and performance, opening new avenues for practical applications in chiral recognition and ultrafast stereochemical analysis. Full article

A simplified correlation index is proposed to be used in real-time pulse shape recognition systems. This index is similar to the classic Pearson’s correlation coefficient, but it can be efficiently implemented in FPGA devices with far fewer logic resources and excellent performance. Numerical simulations with synthetic data and comparisons with the Pearson’s correlation show the suitability of the proposed index in applications such as the discrimination and counting of pulses with a predefined shape. Superior performance is evident in signal-to-noise ratio scenarios close to unity. FPGA implementation of Person’s method and the proposed correlation index have been successfully tested and the main results are summarized. Full article

Cs2LiYCl6: Ce3+ (CLYC) is a dual-mode gamma-neutron scintillator with a medium gamma-ray resolution and pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capability. The PSD performance of CLYC is greatly weakened when coupled with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) because of SiPMs’ low detection efficiency for the ultrafast Core-Valence-Luminescence (CVL) component under gamma excitation. In our previous work, the PSD Figure-of-Merit (FoM) value was optimized to 2.45 at the gamma-equivalent energy region of the thermal neutron by using the charge comparison method. However, this value was reduced to 1.37 at the lower gamma-equivalent energy region of more than 325 keV, and neutrons were difficult to distinguish from gamma rays. Hence, new algorithms should be studied to improve the PSD performance at low gamma-equivalent energy regions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have excellent image recognition capabilities, and thus, neutron and gamma-ray waveforms can be discriminated by their characteristics through a known training set. In this study, neutron and gamma-ray waveforms were measured with a 137Cs source and moderated 252Cf source via an SiPM array-coupled CLYC detector and divided into two groups: training and PSD testing. The CNN training set comprised 137Cs characteristic gamma-ray waveforms and thermal neutron waveforms that were discriminated by the charge comparison method from the training group. A CNN with two convolution-pooling layers was designed to accomplish PSD with the test group. The PSD FoM value of the CNN method was calculated to be 37.20 at the gamma-equivalent energy region of more than 325 keV. This result was much higher than that of the charge comparison method, indicating that neutrons and gamma rays could be better distinguished with the CNN method, especially at low gamma-equivalent energy regions. This paper presents an infrared pulsed modulator into which quantum cascade lasers and a current driver are integrated. The main goal of this study was to determine the capabilities of a new modulator design based on the results of its electrical model simulation and laboratory experiments. A simulation model is a unique tool because it includes the electrical performance of the lasing structure, signal wiring, and driving unit. In the laboratory model, a lasing structure was mounted on the interfacing poles as close to the switching electronics as possible with direct wire bonding. The radiation pulses and laser biasing voltage were registered to analyze the influence of laser module impedance. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the quantum cascade laser (QC laser) design strongly influenced the shape of light, driving current, and biasing voltage pulses. It is a complex phenomenon depending on the laser construction and many other factors, e.g., the amplitude and time parameters of the supplying current pulses. However, this work presents important data to develop or modify numerical models describing QC laser operation. The integrated modulator provided pulses with a 20–100 ns duration and a frequency of 1 MHz without any active cooling. The designed modulator ensured the construction of a sensor based on direct laser absorption spectroscopy, applying the QC laser with spectral characteristics matched to absorption lines of the detected substances. It can also be used in optical ranging and recognition systems. Full article

Plants are ubiquitous in human life. Recognizing an unknown plant by its leaf image quickly is a very interesting and challenging research. With the development of image processing and pattern recognition, plant recognition based on image processing has become possible. Bag of features (BOF) is one of the most powerful models for classification, which has been used for many projects and studies. Dual-output pulse-coupled neural network (DPCNN) has shown a good ability for texture features in image processing such as image segmentation. In this paper, a method based on BOF and DPCNN (BOF_DP) is proposed for leaf classification. BOF_DP achieved satisfactory results in many leaf image datasets. As it is hard to get a satisfactory effect on the large dataset by a single feature, a method (BOF_SC) improved from bag of contour fragments is used for shape feature extraction. BOF_DP and LDA (linear discriminant analysis) algorithms are, respectively, employed for textual feature extraction and reducing the feature dimensionality. Finally, both features are used for classification by a linear support vector machine (SVM), and the proposed method obtained higher accuracy on several typical leaf datasets than existing methods. Action recognition is a challenging task that plays an important role in many robotic systems, which highly depend on visual input feeds. However, due to privacy concerns, it is important to find a method which can recognise actions without using visual feed. In this paper, we propose a concept for detecting actions while preserving the test subject’s privacy. Our proposed method relies only on recording the temporal evolution of light pulses scattered back from the scene. Such data trace to record one action contains a sequence of one-dimensional arrays of voltage values acquired by a single-pixel detector at 1 GHz repetition rate. Information about both the distance to the object and its shape are embedded in the traces. We apply machine learning in the form of recurrent neural networks for data analysis and demonstrate successful action recognition. The experimental results show that our proposed method could achieve on average 96.47 % accuracy on the actions walking forward, walking backwards, sitting down, standing up and waving hand, using recurrent neural network. Sensing techniques are important for solving problems of uncertainty inherent to intelligent grasping tasks. The main goal here is to present a visual sensing system based on range imaging technology for robot manipulation of non-rigid objects. Our proposal provides a suitable visual perception system of complex grasping tasks to support a robot controller when other sensor systems, such as tactile and force, are not able to obtain useful data relevant to the grasping manipulation task. In particular, a new visual approach based on RGBD data was implemented to help a robot controller carry out intelligent manipulation tasks with flexible objects. The proposed method supervises the interaction between the grasped object and the robot hand in order to avoid poor contact between the fingertips and an object when there is neither force nor pressure data. This new approach is also used to measure changes to the shape of an object’s surfaces and so allows us to find deformations caused by inappropriate pressure being applied by the hand’s fingers. Test was carried out for grasping tasks involving several flexible household objects with a multi-fingered robot hand working in real time. Our approach generates pulses from the deformation detection method and sends an event message to the robot controller when surface deformation is detected. In comparison with other methods, the obtained results reveal that our visual pipeline does not use deformations models of objects and materials, as well as the approach works well both planar and 3D household objects in real time. In addition, our method does not depend on the pose of the robot hand because the location of the reference system is computed from a recognition process of a pattern located place at the robot forearm. The presented experiments demonstrate that the proposed method accomplishes a good monitoring of grasping task with several objects and different grasping configurations in indoor environments.
