The accelerating integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into contemporary transportation infrastructure has underscored significant limitations in traditional charging paradigms, particularly in accommodating heterogeneous user requirements within dynamic operational environments. This study presents a differentiated optimization framework for EV charging strategies through the systematic classification of user types. A multidimensional decision-making environment is established for three representative user categories—residential, commercial, and industrial—by synthesizing time-variant electricity pricing models with dynamic carbon emission pricing mechanisms. A bi-level optimization architecture is subsequently formulated, leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to capture user-specific demand characteristics through customized reward functions and adaptive constraint structures. Validation is conducted within a high-fidelity simulation environment featuring 90 autonomous EV charging agents operating in a metropolitan parking facility. Empirical results indicate that the proposed typology-driven approach yields a 32.6% average cost reduction across user groups relative to baseline charging protocols, with statistically significant improvements in expenditure optimization (p < 0.01). Further interpretability analysis employing gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) demonstrates that the model’s attention mechanisms are well aligned with theoretically anticipated demand prioritization patterns across the distinct user types, thereby confirming the decision-theoretic soundness of the framework. With the support of the dual-carbon strategy and related policies, China’s offshore wind power has experienced rapid development. However, constrained by the inherent intermittency and volatility of wind power, large-scale expansion poses significant challenges to grid integration and exacerbates government fiscal burdens. To address these critical issues, this paper proposes a multi-market coupling trading model integrating energy storage-equipped offshore wind power into electricity–carbon–green certificate markets for large-scale grid networks. Firstly, a day-ahead electricity market optimization model that incorporates energy storage is established to maximize power revenue by coordinating offshore wind power generation, thermal power dispatch, and energy storage charging/discharging strategies. Subsequently, carbon market and green certificate market optimization models are developed to quantify Chinese Certified Emission Reduction (CCER) volume, carbon quotas, carbon emissions, market revenues, green certificate quantities, pricing mechanisms, and associated economic benefits. To validate the model’s effectiveness, a gradient ascent-optimized game-theoretic model and a double auction mechanism are introduced as benchmark comparisons. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model increases market revenues by 17.13% and 36.18%, respectively, compared to the two benchmark models. It not only improves wind power penetration and comprehensive profitability but also effectively alleviates government subsidy pressures through coordinated carbon–green certificate trading mechanisms. This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

This paper introduces a reverse demand response scheme that uses electric vehicles in an isolated microgrid system, aiming to solve the renewable energy curtailment issue. We focus on an off-grid system where the system operator faces a stabilization problem due to surplus energy production, while electric vehicles seek to charge energy at a lower price. In our system model, the operator determines the incentive to encourage more charging facilities and electric vehicles to participate in the reverse demand response program. Charging facilities, acting as brokers, use a portion of these incentives to further encourage electric vehicle engagement. Electric vehicles follow the decisions made by the broker and system operator to determine their charging strategy within the system. Consequently, charging energy and incentives are allocated to the electric vehicles in proportion to their decisions. The paper investigates the economic benefits of individual participants and the contribution of power stabilization by implementing a hierarchical decision-making heterogeneous multi-leaders multi-followers Stackelberg game. By demonstrating the existence of a unique Nash Equilibrium, we show the effectiveness of the proposed model in an isolated microgrid environment. Full article

The present study focuses on the attractiveness and perceived value of differentiated quality labels, such as the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), for agri-food products from Extremadura (Spain). In doing so, it addresses a gap in the scientific literature concerning consumer behavior toward products bearing these certifications. The results show that awareness of these quality schemes is significantly higher among middle-aged and older individuals, underscoring the need for more modern and targeted communication strategies. The findings highlight the strategic role of agri-food marketing in promoting certified products and emphasize the importance of bridging the generational gap in consumer education. Overall, differentiated quality schemes are perceived as strategic tools to enhance the competitiveness of local products, strengthen cultural identity, and foster sustainable rural economies. Furthermore, this study identifies a negative relationship between the consumption of certified products and the awareness of certification and a positive relationship with the willingness to pay a premium. Consumers with greater awareness tend consume these products less, although they are more willing to pay higher prices for items bearing quality labels. Full article

This paper develops a unified framework for mathematical finance under general semimartingale models that allow for dividend payments, negative asset prices, and unbounded jumps. We present a rigorous approach to the mathematical modeling of financial markets with dividend-paying assets by defining appropriate concepts of numéraires, discounted processes, and self-financing trading strategies. While most of the mathematical results are not new, this unified framework has been missing in the literature. We carefully examine the transition between nominal and discounted price processes and define appropriate notions of admissible strategies that work naturally in both settings. By establishing the equivalence between these models and providing clear conditions for their applicability, we create a mathematical foundation that encompasses a wide range of realistic market scenarios and can serve as a basis for future work on mathematical finance and derivative pricing. We demonstrate the practical relevance of our framework through a comprehensive application to dividend-paying equity markets where the framework naturally handles discrete dividend payments. This application shows that our theoretical framework is not merely abstract but provides the rigorous foundation for pricing derivatives in real-world markets where classical assumptions need extension. This study evaluates the risk-adjusted performance of Hospitality REITs using multi-factor asset pricing models and downside risk measures with the aim of assessing their diversification potential and crisis sensitivity. Unlike prior studies that examine REITs in aggregate, this study isolates Hospitality REITs to explore their unique cyclical and macroeconomic sensitivities. This study looks at the risk-adjusted performance of Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in relation to more general REIT indexes and the S&P 500 Index. The study reveals that monthly returns of Hospitality REITs increasingly move in tandem with the stock markets during financial crises, which reduces their historical function as portfolio diversifiers. Investing in Hospitality REITs exposes one to the hospitality sector; however, these investments carry notable risks and provide little protection, particularly during economic upheavals. Furthermore, the study reveals that Hospitality REITs underperform on a risk-adjusted basis relative to benchmark indexes. The monthly returns of REITs show significant volatility during the post-COVID-19 era, which causes return-to-risk ratios to be below those of benchmark indexes. Estimates from multi-factor models indicate negative alpha values across conditional models, indicating that macroeconomic variables cause unremunerated risks. This industry shows great sensitivity to market beta and size and value determinants. Hospitality REITs’ susceptibility comes from their showing the most possibility for exceptional losses across asset classes under Value at Risk (VaR) and Conditional Value at Risk (CvaR) downside risk assessments. The findings have implications for investors and portfolio managers, suggesting that Hospitality REITs may not offer consistent diversification benefits during downturns but can serve a tactical role in procyclical investment strategies. This article provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art in cyber risk and cyber risk management, focusing on the mathematical models that have been created to help with risk quantification and insurance pricing. We discuss the main ways that cyber risk is measured, starting with vulnerability functions that show how systems react to threats and going all the way up to more complex stochastic and dynamic models that show how cyber attacks change over time. Next, we examine cyber insurance, including the structure and main features of the cyber insurance market, as well as the growing role of cyber reinsurance in strategies for transferring risk. Finally, we review the mathematical models that have been proposed in the literature for setting the prices of cyber insurance premiums and structuring reinsurance contracts, analysing their advantages, limitations, and potential applications for more effective risk management. The aim of this article is to provide researchers and professionals with a clear picture of the main quantitative tools available and to point out areas that need further research by summarising these contributions. Case Study on Emissions Abatement Strategies for Aging Cruise Vessels: Environmental and Economic Comparison of Scrubbers and Low-Sulphur Fuels

The maritime sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasingly stringent international regulations targeting air pollution. While newly built vessels integrate advanced technologies for compliance, the global fleet averages 21.8 years of age and must meet emission requirements through retrofitting or operational changes. This study evaluates, at environmental and economic levels, two key sulphur abatement strategies for a 1998-built cruise vessel nearing the end of its service life: (i) the installation of open-loop scrubbers with fuel enhancement devices, and (ii) a switch to marine diesel oil as main fuel. The analysis was based on real operational data from a cruise vessel. For the environmental assessment, a Tier III hybrid emissions model was used. The results show that scrubbers reduce SOx emissions by approximately 97% but increase fuel consumption by 3.6%, raising both CO2 and NOx emissions, while particulate matter decreases by only 6.7%. In contrast, switching to MDO achieves over 99% SOx reduction, an 89% drop in particulate matter, and a nearly 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. At an economic level, it was found that, despite a CAPEX of nearly USD 1.9 million, scrubber installation provides an average annual net saving exceeding USD 8.2 million. From the deterministic and probabilistic analyses performed, including Monte Carlo simulations under various fuel price correlation scenarios, scrubber installation consistently shows high profitability, with NPVs surpassing USD 70 million and payback periods under four months. Cities serve as the primary arenas for achieving the strategic objectives of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”. This study employed the LMDI method to systematically analyze the evolution trend of energy-related carbon emissions in Hong Kong and their influencing factors from 1980 to 2023. The main findings are as follows: (1) Hong Kong’s energy consumption structure remains dominated by coal and oil. Influenced by energy prices, significant shifts in this structure occurred across different periods. Imported electricity from mainland China, in particular, has exerted a promoting effect on the optimization of its energy consumption mix. (2) Economic output and population concentration are the primary drivers of increased carbon emissions. However, the contribution of economic growth to carbon emissions has gradually weakened in recent years due to a lack of new growth drivers. (3) Energy consumption intensity, energy consumption structure, and carbon intensity are the primary influencing factors in curbing carbon emissions. Among these, the carbon reduction impact of energy consumption intensity is the most significant. Hong Kong should continue to adopt a robust strategy for controlling total energy consumption to effectively mitigate carbon emissions. Additionally, it should remain vigilant regarding the potential implications of future energy price fluctuations. It is also essential to sustain cross-border energy cooperation, primarily based on electricity imports from the Pearl River Delta, while simultaneously expanding international and domestic supply channels for natural gas. This study employs k-means clustering to analyze local organizations responsible for land improvement in Greece, identifying four distinct groups with consistent geographic patterns but divergent financial and operational characteristics. By integrating unsupervised machine learning with spatial analysis, the research offers a novel perspective on irrigation water pricing and cost recovery. The findings reveal that organizations located on islands, despite high water costs due to limited rainfall and geographic isolation, tend to achieve relatively strong financial performance, indicating the presence of adaptive mechanisms that could inform broader policy strategies. In contrast, organizations managing extensive irrigable land or large volumes of water frequently show poor cost recovery, challenging assumptions about economies of scale and revealing inefficiencies in pricing or governance structures. The spatial coherence of the clusters underscores the importance of geography in shaping institutional outcomes, reaffirming that environmental and locational factors can offer greater explanatory power than algorithmic models alone. This highlights the need for water management policies that move beyond uniform national strategies and instead reflect regional climatic, infrastructural, and economic variability. The study suggests several policy directions, including targeted infrastructure investment, locally calibrated water pricing models, and performance benchmarking based on successful organizational practices. Although grounded in the Greek context, the methodology and insights are transferable to other European and Mediterranean regions facing similar water governance challenges. Recognizing the limitations of the current analysis—including gaps in data consistency and the exclusion of socio-environmental indicators—the study advocates for future research incorporating broader variables and international comparative approaches. Ultimately, it supports a hybrid policy framework that combines data-driven analysis with spatial intelligence to promote sustainability, equity, and financial viability in agricultural water management. The production of bio-based products for different purposes has become an increasingly common strategy over the last few decades, both in Europe and worldwide. This trend seeks to contribute to mitigating the impacts associated with climate change and to cope with the ambitious objectives established at European level. Over recent decades, agro-industries have shown significant potential as biomass suppliers, triggering the development of robust logistical supply chains and the valorization of by-products to obtain bio-based products that can be marketed at competitive prices. However, this transformation may, in some cases, involve restructuring traditional business model to incorporate the biorefinery concept. In this sense, the first step in developing a bio-based value chain involves assessing the resource’s availability and characterizing the feedstock to select the valorization pathway and the bio-application with the greatest potential. The paper incorporates inputs from a case study on PATURPAT, a company commercializing a wide range of ready-prepared potato products, which has commissioned a starch extraction facility to process the rejected pieces of potatoes and water from the process to obtain starch that can be further valorized for different bio-applications. This study aims to comprehensively review current trends and frameworks for potatoes processing agro-industries and define the most suitable bio-applications to target, as well as identify opportunities and challenges. The present study addresses the European option pricing problem based on the Black–Scholes (B-S) model using a hybrid analytical approach known as the Sawi homotopy perturbation transform scheme (SHPTS). We formulate fractional derivatives in the Caputo sense to effectively capture the memory effects inherent in financial models. The competency and reliability of the SHPTS are demonstrated through two illustrative examples. This method produces a closed-form series solution that converges to the precise solution. We perform convergence and visual analyses to demonstrate the competency and reliability of the proposed scheme. The numerical findings further reveal that the strategy is straightforward to apply and very successful in resolving the fractional form of the B-S problem. Full article

Electric buses are key in the strategy towards a greenhouse-gas-neutral fleet. However, their restrictions in terms of range and refueling as well as their increased price point present new challenges for public transport companies. This study aims to address, based on real-world operational data, how energy consumption and charging behavior affect battery aging and how operational strategies can be optimized to extend battery life under realistic conditions. This article presents an energy consumption analysis with respect to ambient temperatures and average vehicle speed based exclusively on real-world data of an urban bus fleet, providing a data foundation for range forecasting and infrastructure planning optimized for public transport needs. Additionally, the State of Charge (SOC) window during operation and vehicle idle time as well as the charging power were analyzed in this case study to formulate recommendations towards a more battery-friendly treatment. The central research question is whether battery-friendly operational strategies—such as reduced charging power and lower SOC windows—can realistically be implemented in daily public transport operations. The impact of the recommendations on battery lifetime is estimated using a battery aging model on drive cycles. Finally, the reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel buses is estimated. Physician Practice Affiliation Drives Site of Care Cost Differentials: An Opportunity to Reduce Healthcare Expenditures

The continued migration of physicians from independent practice to affiliation with larger entities has garnered significant scrutiny. These affiliation models include hospitals and health systems, payers and corporate entities, and management services organizations, which may or may not be private equity (PE)-backed. Data on the impact of different physician affiliation models on cost of care is limited. We examined the relationship between provider affiliation model, site of care (SOC), and cost of care for certain high-volume procedures in procedure-intensive specialties for both Medicare and commercial insurance. We found that hospital-affiliated physicians are least likely—and PE-affiliated physicians are most likely—to provide care in lower-cost settings. For both Medicare and commercial insurance, SOC contributes meaningfully to procedure unit price, which is consistently greater in hospital-based settings. These findings suggest that the physician affiliation model and associated SOC cost differentials contribute materially to healthcare expenditures. As the Medicare cost differentials are set by statute and regulations, strategies such as site-neutral payments are needed to mitigate the monetary impact of historical and future physician practice migration.
