Rapid-Optimized Process Parameters of 1080 Carbon Steel Additively Manufactured via Laser Powder Bed Fusion on High-Throughput Mechanical Property Testing

To ensure the sustainability of alloy-based strategies, both compositional design and processing routes must be simplified. Metal additive manufacturing (AM), with its exceptionally rapid, non-equilibrium solidification, offers a unique platform to produce tailored microstructures in simple alloys that deliver superior mechanical properties. In this study, we employ laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to fabricate 1080 plain carbon steel, a binary alloy comprising only iron and carbon. Deviating from conventional process optimization focusing primarily on density, we optimize LPBF parameters for mechanical performance. We systematically varied key parameters (laser power and scan speed) to produce batches of tensile specimens, which were then evaluated on a high-throughput mechanical testing platform (HTP). Using response surface methodology (RSM), we developed predictive models correlating these parameters with yield strength (YS) and elongation. The RSM models identified optimal and suboptimal parameter sets. Specimens printed under the predicted optimal conditions achieved YS of 1543.5 MPa and elongation of 7.58%, closely matching RSM predictions (1595.3 MPa and 8.32%) with deviations of −3.25% and −8.89% for YS and elongation, respectively, thus validating model accuracy. Comprehensive microstructural characterization, including metallographic analysis and fracture surface examination, revealed the microstructural origins of performance differences and the underlying strengthening mechanisms. This methodology enables rapid evaluation and optimization of LPBF parameters for 1080 carbon steel and can be generalized as an efficient framework for robust LPBF process development. Full article

Millisecond lasers, with their high processing efficiency and large power, are widely used in manufacturing fields such as aerospace. This study aims to investigate the effects of different processing parameters on the micro-hole processing of 316 heat-resistant steel using millisecond lasers. Through the control variable method, the study examines the impact of pulse energy, pulse count, and pulse width on the quality of micro-holes, including the entrance diameter, exit diameter, and taper. Furthermore, combined with orthogonal experiments and COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 simulations, the study explores the influence of pulse width on the formation of blind holes. The experimental results show that when the pulse energy is 2.2 J, the taper is minimal (2.2°), while the taper reaches its peak (2.4°) at 2.4 J pulse energy. As the pulse count increases to 55–60 pulses, the exit diameter stabilizes, and the taper decreases to 1.8°. Blind holes begin to form when the pulse width exceeds 1.2 ms. When the pulse width is 1.2 ms, pulse energy is 2.4 J, and pulse count is 50, the entrance diameter of the blind hole reaches its maximum, indicating that longer pulse widths result in more significant energy reflection and thermal accumulation effects. COMSOL simulations reveal that high-energy pulses cause intense melt ejection, while longer pulse widths exacerbate thermal accumulation at the micro-hole entrance, leading to blind hole formation. This study provides important process references for laser processing of through-holes and blind holes in heat-resistant steel. Full article

CaAl-LDH-Derived High-Temperature CO2 Capture Materials with Stable Cyclic Performance

The urgent need to mitigate rising global CO2 emissions demands the development of efficient carbon capture technologies. This study addresses the persistent challenge of sintering-induced performance degradation in CaO-based sorbents during high-temperature CO2 capture. A novel solvent/nonsolvent synthetic strategy to fabricate CaO/CaAl-layered double oxide (LDO) composites was developed, where CaAl-LDO serves as a nanostructural stabilizer. The CaAl-LDO precursor enables atomic-level dispersion of components, which upon calcination forms a Ca12Al14O33 “rigid scaffold” that spatially confines CaO nanoparticles and effectively mitigates sintering. Thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrate exceptional cyclic stability; the composite achieves an initial CO2 uptake of 14.5 mmol/g (81.5% of theoretical capacity) and retains 87% of its capacity after 30 cycles. This performance significantly outperforms pure CaO and CaO/MgAl-LDO composites. Physicochemical characterization confirms that structural confinement preserves mesoporous channels, ensuring efficient CO2 diffusion. This work establishes a scalable, instrumentally simple route to high-performance sorbents, offering an efficient solution for carbon capture in energy-intensive industries such as power generation and steel manufacturing. Automated surface defect detection in steel manufacturing is pivotal for ensuring product quality, yet it remains an open challenge owing to the extreme heterogeneity of defect morphologies—ranging from hairline cracks and microscopic pores to elongated scratches and shallow dents. Existing approaches, whether classical vision pipelines or recent deep-learning paradigms, struggle to simultaneously satisfy the stringent demands of industrial scenarios: high accuracy on sub-millimeter flaws, insensitivity to texture-rich backgrounds, and real-time throughput on resource-constrained hardware. Although contemporary detectors have narrowed the gap, they still exhibit pronounced sensitivity–robustness trade-offs, particularly in the presence of scale-varying defects and cluttered surfaces. To address these limitations, we introduce MBY (MBDNet-Attention-YOLO), a lightweight yet powerful framework that synergistically couples the MBDNet backbone with the YOLO detection head. Specifically, the backbone embeds three novel components: (1) HGStem, a hierarchical stem block that enriches low-level representations while suppressing redundant activations; (2) Dynamic Align Fusion (DAF), an adaptive cross-scale fusion mechanism that dynamically re-weights feature contributions according to defect saliency; and (3) C2f-DWR, a depth-wise residual variant that progressively expands receptive fields without incurring prohibitive computational costs. Building upon this enriched feature hierarchy, the neck employs our proposed MultiSEAM module—a cascaded squeeze-and-excitation attention mechanism operating at multiple granularities—to harmonize fine-grained and semantic cues, thereby amplifying weak defect signals against complex textures. Finally, we integrate the Inner-SIoU loss, which refines the geometric alignment between predicted and ground-truth boxes by jointly optimizing center distance, aspect ratio consistency, and IoU overlap, leading to faster convergence and tighter localization. Extensive experiments on two publicly available steel-defect benchmarks—NEU-DET and PVEL-AD—demonstrate the superiority of MBY. Without bells and whistles, our model achieves 85.8% mAP@0.5 on NEU-DET and 75.9% mAP@0.5 on PVEL-AD, surpassing the best-reported results by significant margins while maintaining real-time inference on an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier. Ablation studies corroborate the complementary roles of each component, underscoring MBY’s robustness across defect scales and surface conditions. These results suggest that MBY strikes an appealing balance between accuracy, efficiency, and deployability, offering a pragmatic solution for next-generation industrial quality-control systems. In many developing African countries, milk safety is often managed through traditional methods such as fermentation or boiling over firewood. While these approaches reduce some microbial risks, they present critical limitations. Firewood dependency contributes to deforestation, depletion of agricultural residues, and loss of soil fertility, which, in turn, compromise environmental health and food security. Solar pasteurization provides a reliable and sustainable method for thermally inactivating pathogenic microorganisms in milk and other perishable foods at sub-boiling temperatures, preserving its nutritional quality. This study aimed to evaluate the thermal and microbial performance of a low-cost solar milk pasteurization system, hypothesized to effectively reduce microbial contaminants and retain milk quality under natural sunlight. The system was constructed using locally available materials and tailored to the climatic conditions of the Savanna ecological zone in West Africa. A flat-plate glass solar collector was integrated with a 0.15 cm thick stainless steel cylindrical milk vat, featuring a 2.2 cm hot water jacket and 0.5 cm thick aluminum foil insulation. The system was tested in Navrongo, Ghana, under ambient temperatures ranging from 30 °C to 43 °C. The pasteurizer successfully processed up to 8 L of milk per batch, achieving a maximum milk temperature of 74 °C by 14:00 GMT. Microbial analysis revealed a significant reduction in bacterial load, from 6.6 × 106 CFU/mL to 1.0 × 102 CFU/mL, with complete elimination of coliforms. These results confirmed the device’s effectiveness in achieving safe pasteurization levels. The findings demonstrate that this locally built solar pasteurization system is a viable and cost-effective solution for improving milk safety in arid, electricity-limited regions. Its potential scalability also opens avenues for rural entrepreneurship in solar-powered food and water treatment technologies. Full article

The authors of this paper investigated the process parameters of high-speed laser cladding of TC4/AISI431 composite coatings on the surface of C45 steel, choosing laser power, scanning speed, and TC4 addition as the experimental factors, and porosity, microhardness, and corrosion resistance as the target indices. A regression model was established based on the response surface methodology BBD, and the reliability of the model was analyzed using an ANOVA. Then, the WOA was used for multi-objective optimization. The optimal parameter set was determined as follows: a laser power of 5315 W, a scanning speed of 378 mm/s, and a TC4 addition of 3.6%. The microstructure and surface elemental composition of the coating were analyzed. The results showed that the porosity reduced by 60% and that the corrosion resistance improved by 79.98%, while the microhardness remained essentially unchanged. Full article

This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies concerning laser heat treatment (LHT) of structural and tool steels, with particular attention to the 21NiCrMo2 steel used for carburized gear wheels. Analysis includes the influence of critical laser processing conditions—including power output, motion speed, spot size, and focusing distance—on surface microhardness, hardening depth, and microstructure development. The findings indicate that the energy density is the dominant factor that affects the outcomes of LHT. Optimal results, in the form of a high surface microhardness and a sufficient depth of hardening, were achieved within the energy density range of 80–130 J/mm2, allowing for martensitic transformation while avoiding defects such as melting or cracking. At densities below 50 J/mm2, incomplete hardening occurred with minimal microhardness improvement. On the contrary, densities exceeding 150–180 J/mm2 caused surface overheating and degradation. For carburized 21NiCrMo2 steel, the most effective parameters included 450–1050 W laser power, 1.7–2.5 mm/s scanning speed, and 2.0–2.3 mm beam diameter. The review confirms that process control through energy-based parameters allows for reliable prediction and optimization of LHT for industrial applications, particularly in components exposed to cyclic loads. Magnetic gears (MGs) are attracting increasing attention in power transmission systems due to their contactless operation principles, low frictional losses, and high efficiency. However, the broad application potential of these technologies requires a comprehensive evaluation of engineering parameters, such as material selection, energy efficiency, and structural design. This review focuses solely on solid-core magnetic gear systems designed using laminated electrical steels, soft magnetic composites (SMCs), and high-saturation alloys. This review systematically examines the topological diversity, torque transmission principles, and the impact of various core materials, such as electrical steels, soft magnetic composites (SMCs), and cobalt-based alloys, on the performance of magnetic gear systems. Literature-based comparative analyses are structured around topological classifications, evaluation of material properties, and performance analyses based on losses. Additionally, the study highlights that aligning material properties with appropriate manufacturing methods, such as powder metallurgy, wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), and precision casting, is essential for the practical scalability of magnetic gear systems. The findings reveal that coaxial magnetic gears (CMGs) offer a favorable balance between high torque density and compactness, while soft magnetic composites provide significant advantages in loss reduction, particularly at high frequencies. Additionally, application trends in fields such as renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), aerospace, and robotics are highlighted. Full article

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an advanced additive manufacturing technology that is gaining increasing interest for biomedical implants because it can produce dense, patient-specific metallic components with controlled microstructures. This study investigated the LPBF fabrication of 316L stainless steel, which is widely used in orthopedic and dental implants, and examined the effects of laser power and scanning speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties relevant to biomedical applications. The study achieved 99.97% density and refined columnar and cellular austenitic grains, with optimized molten pool morphology. The optimal LPBF parameters, 190 W laser power and 700 mm/s, produced a tensile strength of 762.83 MPa and hardness of 253.07 HV0.2, which exceeded the values of conventional cast 316L stainless steel. These results demonstrated the potential of optimized LPBF 316L stainless steel for functional biomedical applications that require high mechanical integrity and biocompatibility. Full article

Sanicro 25 (X7NiCrWCuCoNb25-23-3-3-2) steel is specifically designed for use in superheater components within the latest generation of conventional power plants. These power plants operate under conditions often referred to as super-ultra-supercritical, with steam parameters that can reach up to 30 MPa and temperatures of 653 °C for fresh steam and 672 °C for reheated steam. While last-generation supercritical power plants still rely on fossil fuels, they represent a significant step forward in more sustainable energy production. The most sophisticated facilities of this kind can achieve thermodynamic efficiencies exceeding 47%. This study aimed to conduct a detailed analysis of the initial precipitation processes occurring in Sanicro 25 steel within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. The temperature of 700 °C corresponds to the operational conditions of this material, particularly in secondary steam superheaters in thermal power plants that operate under ultra-supercritical parameters. Understanding precipitation processes is crucial for optimizing mechanical performance, particularly in terms of long-term strength and creep resistance. To accurately assess the microstructural changes that occur during the early stages of service, a digital twin approach was employed, which included CALPHAD simulations and experimental heat treatments. Experimental annealing tests were conducted in air within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. Precipitation behavior was simulated using the Thermo-Calc 2025a with Dictra software package. The results from Prisma simulations correlated well with the experimental data related to the kinetics of phase transformations; however, it was noted that the predicted sizes of the precipitates were generally smaller than those observed in experiments. Additionally, computational limitations were encountered during some simulations due to the complexity arising from the numerous alloying elements present in Sanicro 25 steel. Laser beam powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M, or simply L-PBF) has emerged as one of the most competitive additive manufacturing technologies for producing complex metallic components with high precision, design freedom, and minimal material waste. Among the various categories of additive manufacturing processes, L-PBF stands out, paving the way for the execution of part designs with geometries previously considered unfeasible. Despite offering several advantages, parts with overhang features require the use of support structures to provide dimensional stability of the part. Support structures achieve this by resisting residual stresses generated during processing and assisting heat dissipation. Although the scientific community acknowledges the role of support structures in the success of L-PBF manufacturing, they have remained relatively underexplored in the literature. In this context, the present work investigated the impact of laser power and scanning speed on the dimensioning, integrity and tensile strength of single-walled block type support structures manufactured in AISI 316L stainless steel. The method proposed in this work is divided in two stages: processing parameter exploration, and mechanical characterization. The results indicated that support structures become more robust and resistant as laser power increases, and the opposite effect is observed with an increment in scanning speed. In addition, defects were detected at the interfaces between the bulk and support regions, which were crucial for the failure of the tensile test specimens. For a layer thickness corresponding to 0.060 mm, it was verified that the combination of laser power and scanning speed of 150 W and 500 mm/s resulted in the highest tensile resistance while respecting the dimensional deviation requirement. Ensuring the structural integrity of reinforced concrete (RC) components in nuclear facilities exposed to extreme conditions is essential for safe decommissioning. This study investigates the impact of high-temperature exposure on RC pedestal structures supported by steel ring-shaped shear connectors—critical elements for maintaining vertical and lateral load paths in containment systems. Scaled-down cyclic loading tests were performed on pedestal specimens with and without prior thermal exposure, simulating post-accident conditions observed at a damaged nuclear power plant. Experimental results show that thermal degradation significantly reduces lateral stiffness, with failure mechanisms concentrating at the interface between the concrete and the embedded steel skirt. Complementary finite element analyses, incorporating temperature-dependent material degradation, highlight the crucial role of load redistribution to steel components when concrete strength is compromised. Parametric studies reveal that while geometric variations in the inner skirt have limited influence, thermal history is the dominant factor affecting vertical capacity. Notably, even with substantial section loss in the concrete, the steel inner skirt maintained considerable load-bearing capacity. This study establishes a validated analytical framework for assessing structural performance under extreme conditions, offering critical insights for risk evaluation and retrofit strategies in the context of nuclear facility decommissioning. The current research trends of production engineering are based on optimizing the machining process concerning human and environmental factors. High-performance materials, such as hardened steels, nickel-based alloys, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and titanium alloys, are classified as hard-to-cut due to their ability to maintain strength at high operating temperatures. Due to these characteristics, such materials are employed in applications such as aerospace, marine, energy generation, and structural. The purpose of this article is to investigate the machinability of these alloys under various cutting conditions. The purpose of this article is to compare cryogenic cooling and cryogenic processing from the perspective of machinability and sustainability in the manufacturing process. Compared to conventional machining, hybrid techniques, which mix cryogenic and minimal quantity lubricant, led to significantly reduced cutting forces of 40–50%, cutting temperatures and surface finishes by approximately 20–30% and more than 40%, respectively. A carbon footprint is determined by several factors including power consumption, energy requirements, and carbon dioxide emissions. As a result of the cryogenic technology, the energy consumption, power consumption, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 40%, 28%, and 35%. Full article

Carbon capture technologies are largely considered to play a crucial role in meeting the climate change and global warming target set by Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2050. These technologies can contribute to clean energy transitions and emissions reduction by decarbonizing the power sector and other CO2 intensive industries such as iron and steel production, natural gas processing oil refining and cement production where there is no obvious alternative to carbon capture technologies. While the progress of carbon capture technologies has fallen behind expectations in the past, in recent years there has been substantial growth in this area, with over 700 projects at various stages of development. Moreover, there are around 45 commercial carbon capture facilities already in operation around the world in different industrial processes, fuel transformation and power generation. Carbon capture technologies including pre/post-combustion, oxyfuel and chemical looping combustion have been widely exploited in the recent years at different Technology Readiness level (TRL). Although, a large number of review studies are available addressing different carbon capture strategies, however, studies related to the commercial status of the carbon capture technologies are yet to be conducted. In this review article, we summarize the state-of-the-art of different carbon capture technologies applied to different emission sources, focusing on emission reduction, net-zero emission, and negative emission. We also highlight the commercial status of the different carbon capture technologies including economics, opportunities, and challenges. Full article

Change in the Structural and Mechanical State of Heat-Resistant 15CrMoV5-10 Steel of TPP Steam Pipelines Under the Influence of Operational Factors

The operational efficiency of the main steam pipelines at thermal power plants is reduced due to several factors, including operating temperature, pressure, service life, and the frequency of process shutdowns, which contribute to the degradation of heat-resistant steels. The study aims to identify the features of changes in the sizes of grains and carbides along their boundaries, as well as mechanical properties (hardness, strength, plasticity and fracture toughness) along the wall thickness of both pipes in the initial state and after operation with block shutdowns. Preliminary electrolytic hydrogenation of specimens (before tensile tests in air) showed even more clearly the negative consequences of operational degradation of steel. The degradation of steel was also assessed using fracture toughness (JIC). The value of JIC for operated steel with a smaller number of shutdowns decreased by 32–33%, whereas with a larger number of shutdowns, its decrease in the vicinity of the outer and inner surfaces of the pipe reached 65 and 61%, respectively. Fractographic signs of more intense degradation of steel after a greater number of shutdowns were manifested at the stage of spontaneous fracture of specimens by changing the mechanism from transgranular cleavage to intergranular, which indicated a decrease in the cohesive strength of grain boundaries.
