Hysterectomy for Benign Gynecologic Disease: A Comparative Study of Articulating Laparoscopic Instruments and Robot-Assisted Surgery in Korea and Taiwan

Background and Objectives: Hysterectomy is a common non-obstetric procedure. Minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery, have replaced open surgery for benign gynecologic conditions. Robotic surgery offers reduced blood loss and shorter hospital stays but is limited by high costs. Articulating laparoscopic instruments aim to replicate robotic dexterity cost-effectively. However, comparative data on these two approaches in hysterectomy are limited. Materials and Methods: This multicenter study analyzed the outcomes of hysterectomies for benign gynecological diseases using articulating laparoscopic instruments (prospectively recruited) and robot-assisted surgery (retrospectively reviewed). The surgeries were performed by minimally invasive gynecological surgeons in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The baseline characteristics, operative details, and outcomes, including operative time, blood loss, complications, and hospital stay, were compared. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 151 patients were analyzed, including 67 in the articulating laparoscopy group and 84 in the robot-assisted group. The operating times were comparable (114.9 vs. 119.9 min, p = 0.22). The articulating group primarily underwent dual-port surgery (79.1%), whereas the robot-assisted group required four or more ports in 71.4% of the cases (p < 0.001). Postoperative complications occurred in both groups, without a significant difference (9.0% vs. 3.6%, p = 0.17). No severe complications or significant differences in the 30-day readmission rates were observed. Conclusions: Articulating laparoscopic instruments provide outcomes comparable to robot-assisted surgery in hysterectomy while reducing the number of ports required. Further studies are needed to explore the learning curve and long-term impact on surgical outcomes. Full article

The widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel has driven the development of LNG bunkering operations in global ports. Major international hubs, such as Shenzhen Port, have implemented ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering practices. However, this process entails unique safety risks, particularly hazards associated with vapor cloud dispersion caused by bunkering hose releases. This study employs the Phast software developed by DNV to systematically simulate LNG release scenarios during STS operations, integrating real-world meteorological data and storage conditions. The dynamic effects of transfer flow rates, release heights, and release directions on vapor cloud dispersion are quantitatively analyzed under daytime and nighttime conditions. The results demonstrate that transfer flow rate significantly regulates dispersion range, with recommendations to limit the rate below 1500 m3/h and prioritize daytime operations to mitigate risks. Release heights exceeding 10 m significantly amplify dispersion effects, particularly at night (nighttime dispersion area at a height of 20 m is 3.5 times larger than during the daytime). Optimizing release direction effectively suppresses dispersion, with vertically downward releases exhibiting minimal impact. Horizontal releases require avoidance of downwind alignment, and daytime operations are prioritized to reduce lateral dispersion risks. Full article

Cylinder-to-cylinder variation (CTCV) is a prevalent issue for natural gas (NG) premixed engines with port fuel injection (PFI), which significantly impacts the engine’s power performance, fuel economy, and reliability. Focusing on this issue, this study established a three-dimensional simulation platform based on a six-cylinder natural gas premixed engine. Quantitative analysis was conducted to discuss the differences in the main boundaries, combustion process, and engine power between cylinders. Additionally, influencing factors of CTCV were explored in terms of mixture uniformity and distribution uniformity. The results indicate that, for the NG premixed engine, many parameters vary significantly between cylinders even under the economical operating condition of 1200 rpm. For example, the difference rate in the peak cylinder pressure and peak phase between cylinder 3 and cylinder 2 can reach 23.5% and 24.3%, respectively. Through the design of simulation cases, it was found that improving the mixture uniformity had a more significant impact on CTCV than improving the distribution uniformity. For example, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of peak pressure decreased by 2.15% through mixture uniformity improvement, while it only decreased by 0.39% through distribution uniformity improvement. At a high speed of 1800 rpm, the influence of distribution uniformity on CTCV increased notably, but the influence of mixture uniformity still remained greater than that of distribution uniformity. Although the importance of digital transformation in contemporary port development has been widely acknowledged, there is little empirical research on the extent to which it promotes sustainable development by reducing costs and increasing efficiency. This study takes the digital transformation of one of the largest ports in northern China—Tangshan Port—as an example, as the application of digital technologies has greatly improved its operational efficiency. By using cargo throughput and container throughput data from Tangshan Port as the experimental group and from Qinhuangdao Port as the control group, difference-in-differences regression models with monthly data and port fixed effects were adopted to clarify the impact of digital transformation on sustainability for different types of cargo throughput, as well as the differential effects of policy impact on port production efficiency and economic performance in the short and long term, in order to examine the impact of digitalization on port operation performance. Our findings demonstrate that digital transformation has a significant positive impact on both port cargo and container throughput, with the long-term effect surpassing the short-term effect. Additionally, regional economic level positively moderates policy impact. These findings provide critical evidence that ports can balance economic growth and environmental sustainability within sustainable development frameworks. Full article

Highway accessibility plays a vital role in supporting local economic development, particularly in regions lacking access to sea or river ports. Recognizing the functional transformation of road infrastructure, the Chinese government has made substantial investments in its expansion. Nevertheless, a theoretical gap remains in justifying whether such investments yield significant economic returns. Drawing on the theory of economic externalities, this study investigates the causal relationship between highway development and regional economic growth, and assesses whether highway construction leads to an acceleration in growth rates. Utilizing panel data from 14 Chinese cities spanning 2000 to 2014, the synthetic control method (SCM) is employed to evaluate the economic externalities of highway investment. The results indicate a positive impact on surrounding industries. Furthermore, a growth rate forecasting analysis based on Back-Propagation Neural Networks (BPNNs) is conducted using industrial enterprise data from 2005 to 2014. The growth rate in the treated city is 1.144%, which is close to the real number 1.117%, higher than the number for the weighted control group, which is 1.000%. The findings suggest that the growth rate of total industrial output improved significantly, confirming the existence of positive spillover effects. This not only enriches the empirical literature on transport infrastructure but also provides targeted enlightenment for the sustainable development of urban economy in terms of policy guidance. The optimal design of electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters relies on accurate characterization of noise source impedance. The conventional insertion loss method involves integrating two distinct passive two-port networks between the linear impedance stabilization network (LISN) and the equipment under test (EUT). The utilization of the insertion loss to formulate a system of binary quadratic equations concerning the real and imaginary components of the impedance of the noise source enables the precise extraction of the magnitude and phase of the noise source impedance in theory. However, inherent inaccuracies in the insertion loss method during extraction can compromise impedance accuracy or even cause extraction failure. This work employs a series inductance method to overcome these limitations. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the magnitude and phase of the noise source impedance. Subsequently, the application scope of the series insertion loss method is analyzed, and the impact of insertion loss measurement error on noise source impedance extraction accuracy is quantified. Requirements for improving extraction accuracy are discussed, and method optimization strategies are proposed. The permissible range of insertion loss error ensuring a solution exists is deduced. Finally, simulation and experimental results validate the proposed approach in a buck converter. Full article

This study presents a data-driven methodology to optimize the operational efficiency of a tugboat equipped with a Voith-Schneider Propeller (VSP) based on full-scale fuel consumption and vessel performance data. The objective is to identify optimal combinations of engine RPM and propeller pitch to reduce fuel consumption during low-demand phases without compromising maneuverability. Sea trials were conducted under controlled conditions using a dual flowmeter system and onboard speed measurements. The data enabled the construction of performance curves, efficiency ratios, and interpolated maps of fuel consumption. Optimal configurations were identified across defined speed ranges, and continuous efficiency zones were visualized through iso-consumption and contour plots. The results reveal a nonlinear relationship between propeller pitch, speed, and fuel demand, with maximum efficiency occurring at medium-to-high pitch values and speeds between 3 and 6 knots. This methodology provides a replicable tool for energy management in port operations and supports informed decisions during accompanying operations and standby periods. Efficiency differences over 300% between RPM–pitch settings were found, highlighting the operational impact of informed configuration choices. Moreover, the structured dataset and visual analysis framework lay the groundwork for future digital twin models aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in VSP-powered tugboats. Full article

The rising frequency of network intrusions has significantly impacted critical infrastructures, leading to an increased focus on the detection of malicious network traffic in recent years. However, traditional port-based and classical machine learning-based malicious network traffic detection methods suffer from a dependence on expert experience and limited generalizability. In this paper, we propose a malicious traffic detection method based on an efficient federated learning framework of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), called MT-FBERT. It offers two major advantages over most existing approaches. First, MT-FBERT pretrains BERT using two pre-training tasks along with an overall pre-training loss on large-scale unlabeled network traffic, allowing the model to automatically learn generalized traffic representations, which do not require human experience to extract the behavior features or label the malicious samples. Second, MT-FBERT finetunes BERT for malicious network traffic detection through an efficient federated learning framework, which both protects the data privacy of critical infrastructures and reduces resource consumption by dynamically identifying and updating only the most significant neurons in the global model. Evaluation experiments on public datasets demonstrated that MT-FBERT outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in malicious network traffic detection. Full article

This study investigates how Chinese ownership in European ports affects trade flows between China and Eurozone countries, set against the backdrop of recent global economic disruptions that have emphasized the crucial role of maritime trade and port efficiency. An augmented gravity model was employed, using the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML), fixed effects (FE), and random effects (RE) estimators, to analyze trade data from 2001 to 2023. The analysis shows that, while conventional economic factors like GDP per capita and the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) consistently and significantly drive trade, Chinese port ownership surprisingly exhibits a negative or statistically insignificant impact on both Chinese exports to the EU and EU imports from China. This suggests that these acquisitions may not primarily boost overall bilateral trade but rather consolidate existing routes or serve broader strategic objectives, as evidenced by heterogeneous country-specific effects and phenomena like the “Rotterdam effect”. Ultimately, my findings underscore the paramount importance of logistical efficiency over ownership structure in facilitating trade. Full article

Maritime transportation is the backbone of global trade, with ports acting as pivotal nodes for the efficient and resilient movement of goods in international supply chains. However, most existing studies lack a systematic and integrated framework for assessing port connectivity. To address this gap, this study develops an integrated Bayesian Network (BN) modeling approach that, for the first time, simultaneously incorporates international connectivity, port competitiveness, and hinterland connectivity within a unified probabilistic framework. Drawing on empirical data from 26 major coastal countries in Asia, the model quantifies the multi-layered and interdependent determinants of port connectivity. The results demonstrate that port competitiveness and hinterland connectivity are the dominant drivers, while the impact of international shipping links is comparatively limited in the current Asian context. Sensitivity analysis further highlights the critical roles of rail transport development and trade facilitation in enhancing port connectivity. The proposed BN framework supports comprehensive scenario analysis under uncertainty and offers targeted, practical policy recommendations for port authorities and regional planners. By systematically capturing the interactions among maritime, port, and inland factors, this study advances both the theoretical understanding and practical management of port connectivity. Short-sea shipping, abbreviated SSS, is the transportation of goods by sea over relatively short distances, in contrast to intercontinental ocean and deep-sea shipping. Short-sea shipping (SSS) is important for cargo transportation in some regions of the world with many ports and well-developed liner shipping. The development and improvement of SSS systems is an important scientific and practical task. This article presents theoretical and experimental results of the development and optimization of SSS. A methodology for connecting and evaluating SSS and other transport chains was developed and tested by experimental studies, with the help of which it is possible to assess the efficiency of SSS and other transport chains, e.g., in terms of economy, freight transportation time, and environmental impact. The developed SSS methodology includes sea and land transport corridors, their assessment, and possible ways of optimizing transport chains using a comparative method and can be applied to various transport and logistics chains. The basis for the development and verification of the SSS methodology was the theoretical and experimental results of real short-sea shipping operations. The use of a comparative method based on which transport and logistics chains are assessed allows one to search for the most optimal SSS routes and possible factors that allow optimizing transportation costs and reducing transportation time and environmental impact. We present a numerical investigation comparing two entanglement generation protocols in finite XX spin chains with varying spin magnitudes (s=1/2,1,3/2). Protocol 1 (P1) relies on staggered couplings to steer correlations toward the ends of the chain. At the same time, Protocol 2 (P2) adopts a dual-port architecture that uses optimized boundary fields to mediate virtual excitations between terminal spins. Our results show that P2 consistently outperforms P1 in all spin values, generating higher-fidelity entanglement in shorter timescales when evaluated under the same system parameters. Furthermore, P2 exhibits superior robustness under realistic imperfections, including diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, as well as dephasing noise. To further assess the resilience of both protocols in experimentally relevant settings, we employ the pseudomode formalism to characterize the impact of non-Markovian noise on the entanglement dynamics. Our analysis reveals that the dual-port mechanism (P2) remains effective even when memory effects are present, as it reduces the excitation of bulk modes that would otherwise enhance environment-induced backflow. Together, the scalability, efficiency, and noise resilience of the dual-port approach position it as a promising framework for entanglement distribution in solid-state quantum information platforms. This study explores the impact of graphene integration on lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LN) ridge waveguides and directional couplers, focusing on coupling efficiency, polarization-dependent light absorption, and temperature sensitivity. Experimental and simulation results reveal that graphene loading significantly alters the effective mode refractive index and enhances waveguide coupling, enabling precise control over light transmission and power distribution. The temperature-dependent behavior of graphene–LN structures demonstrates strong thermal sensitivity, with notable changes in output power ratios between cross and through ports under varying temperatures. These findings highlight the potential of graphene–LN hybrid devices for compact, high-performance photonic circuits and temperature sensing applications. This study provides valuable insights into the design of advanced integrated photonic systems, paving the way for innovations in optical communication, sensing, and quantum technologies. Full article

In this study, convection heat transfer within a square vented cavity, partially occupied by two copper metal foam layers of 10 and 20 PPI saturated with nanofluid, was assessed numerically. The left wall was heated uniformly and non-uniformly by applying multi-frequency spatial heating following a sinusoidal function. Governing equations, including continuity, the Darcy–Brinkmann–Forchheimer model, and local thermal non-equilibrium energy equations, were adopted and solved by employing the finite volume method. The influences of relevant parameters, including nanoparticle concentrations 0%φ10%, Reynolds number (1Re100), inlet and outlet port aspect ratios 0.1D/H0.4, three outlet vent opening locations (So=0 left, (So=H/2D/2) middle, and (So=HD) right), sinusoidal offset temperature (θo=0.5, 1), frequency (f=1, 3, 5), and amplitude (A=01), were examined. The results demonstrate that flow and heat transfer fields are impacted mainly by these parameters. Streamlines are more intensified at the upper-left corner when the outlet opening vent is shifted towards the right-corner upper wall. Fluid- and solid-phase Nusselt number increases Re, D/H, θo, A, and f are raised, specifically when A0.3. The Nusselt number remains constant when the frequency is raised from 3 to 5, definitely when D/H0.25. In uniform and non-uniform heating cases, the Nusselt number of both phases remains constant as the outlet port is shifted right for Re10 and slightly for higher Re as the outlet vent location is translated from left to right. The study examines the impact of pricing strategies on the competition and cooperation of cross-border ports, focusing on unified pricing and differential pricing. The results show that the inside border port can adopt a differentiation strategy to enhance its benefits, as this strategy allows for better control. Additionally, while the differentiated pricing strategy is an equilibrium strategy for the inside border port, blockchain technology can enhance the economic benefits of the inside border port under certain conditions, which also demonstrates the commercial value of blockchain in data sharing. Moreover, the expansion of port capacity can reduce the congestion of the inside border port to some extent under specific conditions. Finally, the study analyzes the environmental impact, tariff impact, and influence of port cooperation, which provides some management implications for inside border port. In summary, the findings highlight the potential of blockchain to optimize pricing strategy and promote cooperation between regional ports, thus improving economic benefits. Full article
