Background: The aim of this review is to summarize and evaluate the properties of antibacterial polysaccharides for application in dental implantology to identify knowledge gaps and provide new research ideas. Methods: The electronic databases PubMed, Medline, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were used to search for peer-reviewed scientific publications published between 2018 and 2025 that provide insights to answer research questions on the role of antibacterial polysaccharides in combating pathogens in dental implantology without triggering immune reactions and inflammation. Further research questions relate to the efficacy against various dental pathogens and the understanding of the antibacterial mechanism, which may enable the development of functionalized polysaccharides with long-term antibacterial activity. Results: Biomedical implants have revolutionized medicine but also increased the risk of infections. Implant infections are a major problem in implantology and lead to implant failure and replacement. An antibacterial coating could be an excellent strategy to extend the lifespan of implants and improve the quality of the patient’s life. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses significant challenges for researchers, forcing them to search for new ways to prevent bacterial infections in implantology. Antibacterial natural polymers have recently received considerable research attention due to their long-term antibacterial activity. Polysaccharides from marine sources, such as chitosan and alginate, or pectin, xanthan, etc., from various plants, appear to be promising biopolymers for such applications in implantology due to their antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, and osteogenic properties. The antibacterial activity of these natural biopolymers depends on their chemical and physical properties. Nanopolysaccharides exhibit higher antibacterial activity than conventional polysaccharides, but their toxicity to human cells must be considered. Their antibacterial activity is based on the disruption of bacterial DNA or RNA synthesis, increased cell wall permeability, membrane disruption, and cytoplasmic leakage. Conclusions: Polysaccharides are a class of natural polymers with a broad spectrum of biological activities. They exhibit antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anticoagulant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral activity. Furthermore, polysaccharides are non-cytotoxic and exhibit good biocompatibility with osteogenic cells. Bactericidal polysaccharides are attractive new antibacterial materials against implant infections and open up new perspectives in implantology. Full article

With the acceleration of the pace of life, increased stress levels, and changes in lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, the incidence of diseases such as cancer and immunodeficiency has been on the rise, which is closely associated with the impaired antioxidant capacity of the body. Polypeptides and polysaccharides derived from edible fungi demonstrate significant strong antioxidant activity and immunomodulatory effects. Auricularia auricula, the second most cultivated mushroom in China, is not only nutritionally rich but also offers considerable health benefits. In particular, its polysaccharides have been widely recognized for their immunomodulatory activities, while its abundant protein content holds great promise as a raw material for developing immunomodulatory peptides. To meet the demand for high-value utilization of Auricularia auricula resources, this study developed a key technology for the stepwise extraction of polypeptides (AAPP1) and polysaccharides (AAPS3) using a composite enzymatic hydrolysis process. Their antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects were assessed using cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immune-suppressed mice. The results showed that both AAPP1 and AAPS3 significantly reversed CTX-induced decreases in thymus and spleen indices (p < 0.05); upregulated serum levels of cytokines (e.g., IL-4, TNF-α) and immunoglobulins (e.g., IgA, IgG); enhanced the activities of hepatic antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT (p < 0.05); and reduced the content of MDA, a marker of oxidative damage. Intestinal microbiota analysis revealed that these compounds restored CTX-induced reductions in microbial α-diversity, increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Paramuribaculum, Prevotella; p < 0.05), decreased the proportion of pro-inflammatory Duncaniella, and reshaped the balance of the Bacteroidota/Firmicutes phyla. This study represents the first instance of synergistic extraction of polypeptides and polysaccharides from Auricularia auricula using a single process. It demonstrates their immune-enhancing effects through multiple mechanisms, including “antioxidation-immune organ repair-intestinal microbiota regulation.” The findings offer a theoretical and technical foundation for the deep processing of Auricularia auricula and the development of functional foods. Ferulic acid (FA) is one of the most abundant hydroxycinnamic acids found in plant cell walls. Its dehydrodimers play an important role in maintaining the structural rigidity of the plant cell wall. Ferulic acid esterases (FAEs) act as debranching enzymes, cleaving the ester bond between FA and the substituted carbohydrate moieties in FA-containing polysaccharides in the plant cell wall. This enzymatic reaction facilitates the degradation of lignocellulosic materials and is crucial for the efficient utilization of biomass resources. This review focuses on the occurrence of ferulic acid in nature and its different forms and outlines the various classification systems of FAEs, their substrate specificity, and the synergistic interactions of these enzymes with other CAZymes. Additionally, it highlights the various methods that have been developed for detecting hydroxycinnamic acids and estimating the enzyme activity, as well as the versatile applications of ferulic acid. This study presents the development and optimization of a functional soy sauce fermented with Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris), a medicinal fungus known for its high cordycepin and polysaccharide content. Using C. militaris as the sole starter culture, the process aimed to improve both nutritional and functional properties. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the entire fermentation process. During the koji stage, temperature, aeration, and inoculum concentration were adjusted to maximize protease activity and cordycepin production. In the fermentation stage, temperature, brine concentration, and water-to-material ratio were optimized to increase amino acid nitrogen and bioactive compound levels. Under optimal conditions (24 °C, 679.60 LPM aeration, 9.6% inoculum for koji; 32 °C, 12% brine, 1.53:1 water-to-material ratio for fermentation), the resulting soy sauce contained 1.14 ± 0.05 g/100 mL amino acid nitrogen and 16.88 ± 0.47 mg/100 mL cordycepin. Compared with traditionally fermented soy sauce, the C. militaris product exhibited a darker color, enhanced umami taste, and a distinct volatile profile featuring linoleic acid, methyl palmitate, and niacinamide. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using C. militaris in soy sauce fermentation and its potential as a novel functional condiment with improved bioactivity and sensory quality. Full article

The aim of the research was to analyse the effect of different extraction temperatures on the colligative, hydrodynamic, and rheological properties of a water-soluble AXs fractions. The research material consisted of raw water extracts of arabinoxylans obtained from the husk at the following temperatures: 40 °C (AX40), 60 °C (AX60), 80 °C (AX80), and 100 °C (AX100). These were characterised in terms of their hydrodynamic, osmotic, and rheological properties, as well as the average molecular mass of the polysaccharide fractions. An increase in extraction temperature resulted in an increase in weight-average molecular mass, from 2190 kDa (AX40) to 3320 kDa (AX100). The values of the osmotic average molecular mass were higher than those obtained from GPC, and decreased with increasing extraction temperature. The dominance of biopolymer–biopolymer interactions was evident in the shape of the autocorrelation function, which did not disappear as the extraction temperature and concentration increased. Furthermore, the values of the second virial coefficient were negative, which is indicative of the tendency of biopolymer chains to aggregate. The rheological properties of the extracts changed from being described by a power-law model (AX40 and AX60) to being described by the full non-linear De Kee model (AX80 and AX100). Full article

The encapsulation of bioactive compounds using proteins as wall materials has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance their stability, bioavailability, and controlled release. Proteins offer unique functional properties, including amphiphilic behavior, gel-forming ability, and interactions with bioactives, making them ideal candidates for encapsulation. Animal-derived proteins, such as whey and casein, exhibit superior performance in stabilizing lipophilic compounds, whereas plant proteins, including soy and pea protein, demonstrate greater affinity for hydrophilic bioactives. Advances in protein modification and the formation of protein–polysaccharide complexes have further improved encapsulation efficiency, particularly for heat- and pH-sensitive compounds. This review explores the physicochemical characteristics of proteins used in encapsulation, the interactions between proteins and bioactives, and the main encapsulation techniques, including spray drying, complex coacervation, nanoemulsions, and electrospinning. Furthermore, the potential applications of encapsulated bioactives in functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals are discussed, highlighting the role of emerging technologies in optimizing delivery systems. Understanding the synergy between proteins, bioactives, and encapsulation methods is essential for developing more stable, bioavailable, and sustainable functional products. Full article

Using common corn stalks as raw materials, a functional dense-structured carbon microsphere with good elastic deformation and certain rigid support was modified from biomass through a step-by-step hydrothermal method. The composition, thermal stability, fluid-loss reduction performance, and reservoir protection performance of the modified carbon microspheres were studied. Research indicates that after hydrothermal treatment, under the multi-level structural action of a small amount of proteins in corn stalks, the naturally occurring cellulose, polysaccharide organic compounds, and part of the ash in the stalks are adsorbed and encapsulated within the long-chain network structure formed by proteins and cellulose. By attaching silicate nanoparticles with certain rigidity from the ash to the relatively stable chair-type structure in cellulose, functional dense-structured carbon microspheres were ultimately prepared. These carbon microspheres could still effectively reduce fluid loss at 200 °C. The permeability recovery value of the cores treated with modified biomass carbon microspheres during flowback reached as high as 88%, which was much higher than that of the biomass itself. With the dense network-like chain structure supplemented by small-molecule aldehydes and silicate ash, the subsequent invasion of drilling fluid was successfully prevented, and a good sealing effect was maintained even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Moreover, since this functional dense-structured carbon microsphere achieved sealing through a physical mechanism, it did not cause damage to the formation, showing a promising application prospect. Natural polymers, polysaccharides, demonstrate piezoelectric behavior suitable for force sensor manufacturing. Carrageenan hydrogel film with α-iron oxide particles can act as a piezoelectric polysaccharide-based force sensor. The mechanical impact on the hydrogel caused by a falling ball shows the impact response time, which is measured in milliseconds. Repeating several experiments in a row shows the dynamics of fatigue, which does not reduce the speed of response to impact. Through the practical experiments, we sought to demonstrate how theoretical knowledge describes the hydrogel we elaborated, which works as a piezoelectric material. In addition to the theoretical basis, which includes the operation of the metal and metal oxide contact junction, the interaction between the metal oxide and the hydrogel surfaces, the paper presents the practical application of this knowledge to the complex hydrogel film. The simple calculations presented in this paper are intended to predict the hydrogel film’s characteristics and explain the results obtained during practical experiments. Carrageenan, as a low-cost and already widely used polysaccharide in various industries, is suitable for the production of low-cost force sensors in combination with iron oxide. Full article

A nanoparticle formulation was generated from distiller dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and its effect on the production of anthraquinones (AQs) was evaluated on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots. The DDGS material was washed with water and ethyl acetate to remove mainly the soluble organic/inorganic molecules and reduce the fat content, respectively, followed by an alkaline treatment to remove the polysaccharides. The resulting alkaline solutions were then lyophilized and redispersed in deionized water to generate a monodispersed nanoparticulate formulation (DDGS-NP) with a hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential of 227 ± 42 nm and −53 ± 7 mV, respectively. The formulation demonstrated good colloidal stability over time, and sterilized DDGS-NPs maintained comparable physicochemical properties. The nanoparticles were enriched in protein fractions, unsaturated fatty acids, and orthophosphate anion components from DDGS, as determined by solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), organic elemental analysis (OEA), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques. The DDGS-NPs were tested at different concentrations on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots, in comparison to or in combination with methyl jasmonate (MeJ), for their capacity to induce the production of AQs. All DDGS-NP concentrations increased the production of specific AQs to 7.7 (100 mg L−1), 7.8 (200 mg L−1), and 9.3 µmol/gFW (500 mg L−1), with an extracellular AQ accumulation of 18 µM for the highest DDGS-NP concentration, in comparison with the control hairy roots (~2 µM AQ). The plant growth was not affected at any of the tested nanoparticle concentrations. Interestingly, the combination of DDGS-NPs and MeJ resulted in the highest extracellular AQ accumulation in R. tinctorum root cultures. Full article

Marine biomass represents a valuable yet underexploited resource for the development of high-value biomaterials. Recent advances have highlighted the significant potential of marine-derived polysaccharides, proteins, and peptides in biomedical applications, most notably in drug delivery and wound healing. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current research on the extraction, processing and pharmaceutical valorization of these biopolymers, with a focus on their structural and functional properties that allow these materials to be engineered into nanocarriers, hydrogels, scaffolds, and smart composites. Key fabrication strategies such as ionic gelation, desolvation, and 3D bioprinting are critically examined for their role in drug encapsulation, release modulation, and scaffold design for regenerative therapies. The review also covers preclinical validation, scale-up challenges, and relevant regulatory frameworks, offering a practical roadmap from sustainable sourcing to clinical application. Special attention is given to emerging technologies, including stimuli-responsive biomaterials and biosensor-integrated wound dressings, as well as to the ethical and environmental implications of marine biopolymer sourcing. By integrating materials science, pharmaceutical technology and regulatory insight, this review aims to provide a multidisciplinary perspective for researchers and industrial stakeholders seeking sustainable and multifunctional pharmaceutical platforms for precision medicine and regenerative therapeutics. The growing demand for sustainable, functional ingredients in the food industry has driven interest in marine-derived biopolymers. Among marine sources, microalgae represent a promising yet underexplored reservoir of bioactive gel-forming compounds, particularly extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs), both sulfated and non-sulfated, as well as proteins that exhibit unique gelling, emulsifying, and stabilizing properties. This study focuses on microalgal species with demonstrated potential to produce viscoelastic, shear-thinning gels, making them suitable for applications in food stabilization, texture modification, and nutraceutical delivery. Recent advances in biotechnology and cultivation methods have improved access to high-value strains, which exhibit promising physicochemical properties for the development of novel food textures, structured formulations, and sustainable food packaging materials. Furthermore, these microalgae-derived gels offer additional health benefits, such as antioxidant and prebiotic activities, aligning with current trends toward functional foods containing prebiotic materials. Key challenges in large-scale production, including low EPS productivity, high processing costs, and lack of regulatory frameworks, are critically discussed. Despite these barriers, advances in cultivation technologies and biorefinery approaches offer new avenues for commercial application. Overall, microalgal gels hold significant promise as sustainable, multifunctional ingredients for clean-label food formulations. Full article

As such, blue bioeconomy is the path forward, since it is a development strategy that meets the economic potential without compromising the environmental health. A special look needs to be taken at the underutilized resources and by-products, which hold unexploited value. For instance, green macroalgae are widespread marine macroalgae that lack industry applications, despite being rich in biopolymers (polysaccharides) and antioxidants. Moreover, fish by-products are also rich sources of biopolymers, mostly proteins. Thus, among other potential uses, raw materials could be explored to produce functional edible coatings under a blue bioeconomy approach. A detailed characterization of raw materials is the first step for the development of value-added products. These topics will be addressed in this review. Full article

Since the mid-19th century, researchers have explored the potential of bio-based polymeric materials for diverse applications, with particular promise in medicine. This review provides a focused and detailed examination of natural and synthetic biopolymers relevant to tissue engineering and biomedical applications. It emphasizes the structural diversity, functional characteristics, and processing strategies of major classes of biopolymers, including polysaccharides (e.g., hyaluronic acid, alginate, chitosan, bacterial cellulose) and proteins (e.g., collagen, silk fibroin, albumin), as well as synthetic biodegradable polymers such as polycaprolactone, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxybutyrate. The central aim of this manuscript is to elucidate how intrinsic properties—such as molecular weight, crystallinity, water retention, and bioactivity—affect the performance of biopolymers in biomedical contexts, particularly in drug delivery, wound healing, and scaffold-based tissue regeneration. This review also highlights recent advancements in polymer functionalization, composite formation, and fabrication techniques (e.g., electrospinning, bioprinting), which have expanded the application potential of these materials. By offering a comparative analysis of structure–property–function relationships across a diverse range of biopolymers, this review provides a comprehensive reference for selecting and engineering materials tailored to specific biomedical challenges. It also identifies key limitations, such as production scalability and mechanical performance, and suggests future directions for developing clinically viable and environmentally sustainable biomaterial platforms. Innovative changes to our current food system are needed, and one solution is cultivated meat, which uses modern engineering, materials science, and biotechnology to produce animal protein. This article highlights the advantages of incorporating whey protein isolate (WPI) and β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) into hydrogel networks to aid cell growth on cultivated meat scaffolds. The protein and polysaccharide (i.e., alginate) components of the scaffolds are food-grade and generally regarded as safe ingredients, enabling the transition to more food-safe, edible, and nutritious scaffolds. The impact of WPI and varying properties on cell performance was evaluated; alginate concentration and the addition of proteins into the hydrogels significantly altered their stiffness and strength. The results of this study demonstrate the innocuous nature of novel scaffolds and reveal enhanced cell proliferation on WPI and β-LG-modified groups compared to standard biomaterial controls. This work serves as a stepping stone for more comprehensive analyses of WPI, β-LG, and alginate scaffolds for use in cultivated meat research and production. Full article

The development of materials based on chitosan and polyesters that possess thermoplastic, biocompatible, and biodegradable properties is a perspective for additive technologies in biomedicine. Research on obtaining such compositions is constrained because the polysaccharide content does not exceed 5 wt.%, which cannot ensure effective tissue regeneration. Herein, we propose a method for obtaining thermoplastic block copolymers based on chitosan and poly(ε-caprolactone) by ultrasonic irradiation of a homogeneous solution of a homopolymer mixture in dimethyl sulfoxide as a common solvent, achieving a yield of 99%. The distinctive feature of the method is the interaction between the components at the molecular level and provides obtaining copolymers at any component ratio. SEM images revealed a homogeneous structure without structural defects in both solvent-cast films and extruded filaments. The block copolymers were characterized by high mechanical property tensile strength of up to 60–70 MPa and elasticity of up to 35% for films and 25–40 MPa and elasticity of up to 50% for filaments. Cell adhesion of composition investigated on fibroblast cells (hTERT BJ-5TA) is at the level of chitosan and demonstrated the absence of cytotoxicity. Full article
