Anthropogenic vibrational disturbances in the marine environment can affect benthic organisms, but these effects on marine animals remain poorly understood. To examine whether anthropogenic substrate-borne vibrations induce physiological stress in the white-clawed fiddler crab (Austruca lactea), individuals were exposed to vibrations at 120 Hz and 250 Hz (~100 dB re 1 µm/s2), and physiological indicators were measured. Lactate and ATP concentrations in the leg muscle were measured, and heat shock protein 70 kDa (HSP70) gene expression in the hepatopancreas was analyzed using RT-PCR with newly designed primers. At 120 Hz, ATP and lactate levels in the leg muscle did not differ significantly between the exposure and control groups. However, at 250 Hz, ATP levels were lower and lactate levels were higher in the exposure group compared to the control. HSP70 gene expression in the hepatopancreas did not differ significantly between the exposure and control groups at either frequency, although one individual exposed to 250 Hz exhibited markedly elevated expression, inducing higher expression variability in the exposed group. These results suggest that anthropogenic vibrational pollution may induce physiological stress in A. lactea, and that such physiological indices could serve as biomarkers for assessing vibroacoustic pollution on marine animals. The escalating environmental noise pollution along urban rail transit corridors, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, necessitates innovative and efficient noise control measures. A comprehensive investigation was conducted that utilized field measurements of train passing-by noise to establish a statistical energy analysis model for evaluating the acoustic performance of both vertical (VB) and fully enclosed (FB) barrier configurations. The study incorporated Maa’s theory of micro-perforated plate (MPP) parameter optimization and developed a neural network surrogate model focused on insertion loss maximization for barrier geometric design. Key findings revealed significant barrier-induced near-track noise amplification, with peak effects observed at the point located 1 m from the barrier and 2 m above the rail. Frequency-dependent analysis demonstrated a characteristic rise-and-fall reflection pattern, showing maximum amplifications of 1.47 dB for VB and 4.13 dB for FB within the 400–2000 Hz range. The implementation of optimized MPPs was found to effectively eliminate the near-field noise amplification effects, achieving sound pressure level reductions of 4–8 dB at acoustically sensitive locations. Furthermore, the high-precision surrogate model (R2 = 0.9094, MSE = 0.8711) facilitated optimal geometric design solutions. The synergistic combination of MPP absorption characteristics and geometric optimization resulted in substantially enhanced barrier performance, offering practical solutions for urban rail noise mitigation strategies. Traffic-related pollutants remain a challenging global issue, with significant policy implications. Within the European Union, Romania has the highest yearly societal cost per capita due to air pollution, which kills 29,000 Romanians every year, whereas the health and economic costs are also significant. In this context, municipal authorities in the country, particularly in high-density areas, should place a strong focus on mitigating air pollution. In particular, the capital city, Bucharest, ranks among the most congested cities in the world while registering the highest pollution index in Romania, with traffic pollution responsible for two-thirds of its air pollution. Consequently, studies that assess and model pollution trends are paramount to inform local policy-making processes and assist pollution-mitigation efforts. In this paper, a generalized additive modeling (GAM) framework is employed to model hourly concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), i.e., a relevant traffic-pollution proxy, at a busy urban traffic location in central Bucharest, Romania. All models are developed on a wide, fine-granularity dataset spanning January 2017–December 2022 and include extensive meteorological covariates. Model robustness is assured by switching between the generalized additive model (GAM) framework and the generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) framework when the residual autoregressive process needs to be specifically acknowledged. Results indicate that trend GAMs explain a large amount of the hourly variation in traffic pollution. Furthermore, meteorological factors contribute to increasing the models’ explanation power, with wind direction, relative humidity, and the interaction between wind speed and the atmospheric pressure emerging as important mitigators for NO2 concentrations in Bucharest. The results of this study can be valuable in assisting local authorities to take proactive measures for traffic pollution control in the capital city of Romania. Full article

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have progressed in Korea, yet public attention to hazardous pollutants emitted from industrial complexes remains limited. With the increasing coexistence of industrial and residential areas, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring and management plans that account for the rapid dispersion of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). In this study, we conducted spatiotemporal data collection and analysis for the first time in Korea using real-time measurements obtained through mobile extractive differential optical absorption spectroscopy (Me-DOAS) mounted on a solar occultation flux (SOF) vehicle. The measurements were conducted in the Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex in Busan, which comprises the Sasang Industrial Complex and the Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex. BTEX compounds were selected as target volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and real-time measurements of both BTEX and fine particulate matter (PM) were conducted simultaneously. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 (r = 0.848–0.894), indicating shared sources. In Sasang, BTEX levels were associated with traffic and localized facilities, while in Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim, the concentrations were more influenced by industrial zoning and wind patterns. Notably, inter-compound correlations such as benzene–m-xylene and p-xylene–toluene suggested possible co-emission sources. This study proposes a GIS-based, three-dimensional air quality management approach that integrates variables such as traffic volume, wind direction, and speed through real-time measurements. The findings are expected to inform effective pollution control strategies and future environmental management plans for industrial complexes. Full article

Ultrahigh resolution fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass concentration remote sensing products are crucial for atmospheric environmental monitoring, pollution source verification, health exposure risk assessment, and other fine-scale applications in urban environments. This study developed an ultrahigh resolution retrieval algorithm to estimate 30 m resolution PM2.5 mass concentrations over urban areas from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A/B satellite measurements. The algorithm utilized aerosol optical depth (AOD) products retrieved from the Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI measurements from 2017 to 2020, combined with multi-source auxiliary data to establish a PM2.5-AOD relationship model across China. The results showed an overall high coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.82 and 0.76 for the model training accuracy based on samples and stations, respectively. The model prediction accuracy in Beijing and Wuhan reached R2 values of 0.86 and 0.85. Applications in both cities demonstrated that ultrahigh resolution PM2.5 has significant advantages in resolving fine-scale spatial patterns of urban air pollution and pinpointing pollution hotspots. Furthermore, an analysis of point source pollution at a typical heavy pollution emission enterprise confirmed that ultrahigh spatial resolution PM2.5 can accurately identify the diffusion trend of point source pollution, providing fundamental data support for refined monitoring of urban air pollution and air pollution prevention and control. Long-term source apportionment of PM2.5 during high-pollution periods is essential for achieving sustained reductions in both PM2.5 levels and their health impacts. This study conducted PM2.5 sampling in Shenzhen from January to March over the years 2021–2024 to investigate the long-term impact of coronavirus disease 2019 and the short-term impact of the Spring Festival on PM2.5 levels. The measured average PM2.5 concentration during the research period was 22.5 μg/m3, with organic matter (OM) being the dominant component. Vehicle emissions, secondary sulfate, secondary nitrate, and secondary organic aerosol were identified by receptor model as the primary sources of PM2.5 during the observational periods. The pandemic led to a decrease of between 30% and 50% in the contributions of most anthropogenic sources in 2022 compared to 2021, followed by a rebound. PM2.5 levels in January–March 2024 dropped by 1.4 μg/m3 compared to 2021, mainly due to reduced vehicle emissions, secondary sulfate, fugitive dust, biomass burning, and industrial emissions, reflecting Shenzhen’s and nearby cities’ effective control measures. However, secondary nitrate and fireworks-related emissions rose significantly. During the Spring Festival, PM2.5 concentrations were 23% lower than before the festival, but the contributions of fireworks burning exhibited a marked increase in both 2023 and 2024. Specifically, during intense peak events, fireworks burning triggered sharp, short-term spikes in characteristic metal concentrations, accounting for over 50% of PM2.5 on those peak days. In the future, strict control over vehicle emissions and enhanced management of fireworks burning during special periods like the Spring Festival are necessary to reduce PM2.5 concentration and improve air quality. Air pollution monitoring in ungauged zones presents unique challenges yet remains critical for understanding environmental health impacts and socioeconomic dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This study investigates air pollution patterns in northwestern Syria during 2019–2024, analyzing NO2 and CO concentrations using Sentinel-5P TROPOMI satellite data processed through Google Earth Engine. Monthly concentration averages were examined across eight key locations using linear regression analysis to determine temporal trends, with Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients calculated between pollutant levels and five meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation) to determine the influence of political governance, economic conditions, and environmental sustainability factors on pollution dynamics. Quality assurance filtering retained only measurements with values ≥ 0.75, and statistical significance was assessed at a p < 0.05 level. The findings reveal distinctive spatiotemporal patterns that reflect the region’s complex political-economic landscape. NO2 concentrations exhibited clear political signatures, with opposition-controlled territories showing upward trends (Al-Rai: 6.18 × 10−8 mol/m2) and weak correlations with climatic variables (<0.20), indicating consistent industrial operations. In contrast, government-controlled areas demonstrated significant downward trends (Hessia: −2.6 × 10−7 mol/m2) with stronger climate–pollutant correlations (0.30–0.45), reflecting the impact of economic sanctions on industrial activities. CO concentrations showed uniform downward trends across all locations regardless of political control. This study contributes significantly to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing critical baseline data for SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), mapping urban pollution hotspots for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), demonstrating climate–pollution correlations for SDG 13 (Climate Action), revealing governance impacts on environmental patterns for SDG 16 (Peace and Justice), and developing transferable methodologies for SDG 17 (Partnerships). These findings underscore the importance of incorporating environmental safeguards into post-conflict reconstruction planning to ensure sustainable development. Full article

The screening of poplar varieties that demonstrate tolerance to low nitrogen (N) represents a promising strategy for improving nitrogen-use efficiency in trees. Such an approach could reduce reliance on N fertilizers while mitigating environmental pollution associated with their cultivation. In this study, a total of 87 poplar varieties were evaluated in a controlled greenhouse pot experiment. Under both low-nitrogen (LN) and normal-nitrogen (NN) conditions, 18 traits spanning four categories—growth performance, leaf morphology, chlorophyll fluorescence, and N isotope parameters were measured. For 13 of these traits (growth, leaf morphology, chlorophyll fluorescence), genetic variation and parameters, including genotypic values, were analyzed using best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) within a linear mixed model (LMM). LN tolerance of tested poplar varieties was comprehensively assessed with three MGIDI strategies by integrating means, BLUPs, and low-nitrogen tolerance coefficient (LNindex) to rank poplar varieties. The results exhibited highly significant differences across all traits between LN and NN experiments, as well as among varieties. LN stress markedly inhibited growth, altered leaf morphology, and reduced chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in young poplar plants. Among the selection strategies, the MGIDI_LNindex approach demonstrated the highest selection differential percent (SD% = 10.5–35.23%). Using a selection intensity (SI) of 20%, we systematically identified 17 superior genotypes across all three strategies. In a thorough, comprehensive MGIDI-based evaluation, these varieties exhibited exceptional adaptability and stability under LN stress. The selected genotypes represent valuable genetic resources for developing improved poplar cultivars with enhanced low-nitrogen tolerance. Full article

While significant progress has been made in controlling point source pollution, agricultural non-point source pollution (AGNPSP) has emerged as a major contributor to global water pollution, posing a severe threat to ecological quality. According to China’s Second National Pollution Source Census, AGNPSP constitutes a substantial proportion of water pollution, making its mitigation a critical challenge. Identifying AGNPSP risk zones is essential for targeted management and effective intervention. This study focuses on Yongchuan District, a representative hilly–mountainous area in the Yangtze River Basin. Applying the landscape ecology “source–sink” theory, we selected seven natural factors influencing AGNPSP and constructed a minimum cumulative resistance model using remote sensing post-processing data. An attempt was made to classify the “source” and “sink” landscapes, and ultimately conduct a risk assessment of AGNPSP in Yongchuan District, identifying the key areas for AGNPSP control. Key findings include: 1. Vegetation coverage is the most significant natural factor affecting AGNPSP. 2. Extremely high- and high-risk zones cover 90% of Yongchuan, primarily concentrated in the central and southern regions, indicating severe AGNPSP pressure that demands urgent management. 3. The levels of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in the typical sections are related to the risk levels of the corresponding sections. Consequently, the risk level of AGNPSP directly correlates with the pollutant concentrations measured in the sections. This study provides a robust scientific basis for AGNPSP risk assessment and targeted control strategies, offering valuable insights for pollution management in Yongchuan and similar regions. The relationship between economic progress and environmental quality remains a central focus in global sustainability discourse. This study examines the link between per capita economic growth and CO2 emissions across 128 countries from 1996 to 2022, controlling for energy consumption, trade volume, and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows. It also evaluates the role of governance quality—measured by regulatory quality and its volatility—while considering the globalization index as a confounding factor influencing CO2 emissions. We test the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, which suggests that emissions initially rise with income but decline after reaching a certain economic threshold. Our findings confirm the global presence of the EKC. The analysis further shows that trade openness, governance, and globalization significantly influence FDI inflows, with FDI, in turn, reinforcing institutional quality through improved governance and globalization indicators. However, in countries with weaker governance and regulatory frameworks, FDI tends to promote pollution-intensive industrial growth, lending support to aspects of the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH). We find a significant departure in EKC explained by post-COVID governance and globalization compromises, which induced the environment towards the PHH phenomenon. These results highlight the need for context-specific policy measures that align economic development with environmental constraints. Full article

The integration of water resources, water environment, and water ecology (hereinafter “three-water”) is essential not only for addressing the current water crisis but also for achieving sustainable development. Chaohu Lake is an important water resource and ecological barrier in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, undertaking such functions as agricultural irrigation, urban water supply, and flood control and storage. Studying the performance of “three-water” in the Chaohu Lake Basin will help to understand the pollution mechanism and governance dilemma in the lake basin. It also provides practical experience and policy references for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yangtze River Basin. We used the DPSIR-TOPSIS model to analyze the performance of the river–lake system in the Chaohu Lake Basin and employed an obstacle model to identify factors influencing “three-water.” The results indicated that overall governance and performance of the “three-water” in the Chaohu Lake Basin exhibited an upward trend from 2011 to 2022. Specifically, the obstacle degree of driving force decreased by 19.6%, suggesting that economic development enhanced governance efforts. Conversely, the obstacle degree of pressure increased by 34.4%, indicating continued environmental stress. The obstacle degree of state fluctuated, showing a decrease of 13.2% followed by an increase of 3.8%, demonstrating variability in the effectiveness of water resource, environmental, and ecological management. Additionally, the obstacle degree of impact declined by 12.8%, implying the reduced efficacy of governmental measures in later stages. Response barriers decreased by 5.8%. Variations in the obstacle degree of response reflected differences in response capacities. Spatially, counties and districts at the origins of major rivers and their lake outlets showed lower performance levels in “three-water” management compared to other regions in the basin. Notably, Wuwei City and Feidong County exhibited better governance performance, while Feixi County and Chaohu City showed lower performance levels. Despite significant progress in water resource management, environmental improvement, and ecological restoration, further policy support and targeted countermeasures remain necessary. Counties and districts should pursue coordinated development, leverage the radiative influence of high-performing areas, deepen regional collaboration, and optimize, governance strategies to promote sustainable development. Agriculture and animal feeding operations are responsible for 87% of ammonia emissions in the UK. Controlling NH3 concentrations below 20 ppm is crucial to preserve workers’ and livestock’s well-being. Therefore, ammonia control systems are required for maintaining adequate air quality in livestock facilities. This study assessed the ammonia reduction efficiency of a novel air pollution abatement (APA) system used in a pig farm building. The monitoring duration was 11 weeks. The results were compared with the baseline from a previous pig cycle during the same time of year in 2023. A ventilation-controlled room was monitored during a two-phase campaign, and the actual ammonia concentrations were measured at different locations within the site and at the inlet/outlet of the APA system. A 98% ammonia reduction was achieved at the APA outlet through NH3 absorption in tap water. Ion chromatography analyses of farm water samples revealed NH3 concentrations of up to 530 ppm within 83 days of APA operation. Further scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray inspections revealed the presence of salts and organic/inorganic matter in the solid residues. This research can contribute to meeting current ammonia regulations (NECRs), also by reusing the process water as a potential nitrogen fertiliser in agriculture. Full article

ESG serves as a key metric for measuring corporate sustainability, but divergence among rating agencies has led to uncertainty in such an assessment. This investigation identifies ESG rating divergence as a critical catalyst for corporate digital transformation, establishing empirical analysis through a robust positive correlation between the heterogeneity in sustainability assessments and organizational digitalization intensity. Comprehensive robustness examinations and endogeneity controls substantiate the persistent significance of this relationship. Mechanistically, such divergence drives technological adaptation by restructuring the R&D team composition and elevating capital allocation toward innovative initiatives. Contextual heterogeneity manifests through amplified effects in firms with elevated analyst scrutiny and stringent internal governance, whereas pollution-intensive enterprises exhibit significant effect suppression. These findings collectively advance theoretical frameworks concerning ESG evaluation economics and digital transformation drivers, while furnishing actionable implementation blueprints for corporate digitization strategists. Cancer Risk Associated with Inhalation Exposure to PM10-Bound PAHs and PM10-Bound Heavy Metals in Polish Agglomerations

Particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals (HMs) present in polluted air are strongly associated with an increased risk of respiratory diseases. In our study, we grouped cities based on their pollution levels using a method called Ward’s cluster analysis and looked at the increased cancer risk from PM10-bound harmful substances for adult men and women living in Polish cities. The analysis was based on data from 8 monitoring stations where concentrations of PM10, PAHs, and HMs were measured simultaneously between 2018 and 2022. The cluster analysis made it possible to distinguish three separate agglomeration clusters: cluster I (Upper Silesia, Wroclaw) with the highest concentrations of heavy metals and PAHs, with mean levels of lead 14.97 ± 7.27 ng·m−3, arsenic 1.73 ± 0.60 ng·m−3, nickel 1.77 ± 0.95 ng·m−3, cadmium 0.49 ± 0.28 ng·m−3, and ∑PAHs 15.53 ± 6.44 ng·m−3, cluster II (Warsaw, Łódź, Lublin, Cracow) with dominant road traffic emissions and low emissions, with average levels of lead 8.00 ± 3.14 ng·m−3, arsenic 0.70 ± 0.17 ng·m−3, nickel 1.64 ± 0.96 ng·m−3, and cadmium 0.49 ± 0.28 ng·m−3, and cluster III (Szczecin, Tricity) with the lowest concentration levels with favourable ventilation conditions. All calculated ILCR values were in the range of 1.20 × 10−6 to 1.11 × 10−5, indicating a potential cancer risk associated with long-term exposure. The highest ILCR values were reached in Upper Silesia and Wroclaw (cluster I), and the lowest in Tricity, which was classified in cluster III. Our findings suggest that there are continued preventive actions and stricter air quality control. The results confirm that PM10 is a significant carrier of airborne carcinogens and should remain a priority in both environmental and public health policy. Full article

The impact of black carbon (BC) emissions on climate change, human health, and the environment is well-documented in the scientific literature. Although BC still remains largely unregulated at the international level, efforts have been made to reduce emissions of BC and Particulate Matter (PM2.5), particularly in sectors such as energy production, industry, and road transport. In contrast, the maritime shipping industry has made limited progress in reducing BC emissions from ships, mainly due to the absence of stringent BC emission regulations. While the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established emission limits for pollutants such as SOx, NOx, and VOCs under MARPOL Annex VI, as of today, BC emissions from ships are still unregulated at the international level. Whereas it was anticipated that PM2.5 and BC emissions would be reduced with the adoption of the SOx regulations, especially within the sulfur emission control areas (SECA), this study reveals that BC emissions are only partially affected by the current MARPOL Annex VI regulations. Based on 886 real-world black carbon (BC) emission measurements from ships operating in the southern North Sea, the study demonstrates that SECA-compliant fuels do contribute to a notable decrease in BC emissions. However, it is important to note that the average BC emission factors (EFs) within the SECA remain comparable in magnitude to those reported for non-compliant fuels in earlier studies. Moreover, ships using exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs) as a SECA-compliant measure were found to emit significantly higher levels of BC, raising concerns about the environmental sustainability of EGCSs as an emissions mitigation strategy.
