This paper suggests a perspective-controlled solution for an integrated Infrared micro-/nanoplastic spectroscopy/photometry-based detection, from the diffraction up to the geometry etendue, with the aim of yielding a universal spectrometer/photometer. Spectrophotometry, unlike spectroscopy that shows the interaction between matter and radiated energy, is a specific form of photometry that measures light parameters in a particular range as a function of wavelength. The solution, meant for diffraction grating and geometry etendue of the display unit, is provided by a controller that tunes the grating pitch to accommodate any emitted/transmitted wavelength from a sample made of microplastics, their degraded forms and their potential retention, and ensures that all the diffracted wavelengths are concentrated on the required etendue. The purpose is not only to go below the current Infrared limit of 20μm microplastic size, or to suggest an Infrared spectrophotometry geometry capable of detecting micro- and nanoplastics in the range of (1nm20μm) for integrated nano- and micro-scales, but also to transform most of the pivotal components to be directly wavelength-independent. The related controlled geometry solutions, from the controlled grating slit-width up to the controlled display unit etendue functions, are suggested for a wider generic range integration. The results from image-size characterization show that the following charge-coupled devices, nanopixel CCDs, and/or micropixel CCDs of less than 100nm are required on the display unit, justifying the Infrared micro- and nanoplastic-integrated spectrophotometry, and the investigation conducted with other electromagnetic spectrum ranges that suggests a possible universal spectrometer/photometer. Achieving energy-efficient, human-like gait remains a major challenge in bipedal humanoid robotics, as traditional serial actuation architectures often lead to high instantaneous power peaks and uneven load distribution. This study addresses the lack of research on how mechanical symmetry, achieved through parallel actuation, can improve power management in lower-limb joints. We developed a 14-degree-of-freedom (DOF) hip-sized bipedal robot model and conducted simulations comparing a conventional serial configuration—using single-DOF rotary actuators—with a novel parallel configuration that employs paired linear actuators at the hip pitch, hip roll, ankle pitch, and ankle roll joints. Simulation results over a standardized walking cycle show that the parallel configuration reduces peak hip-pitch power by 80.4% and peak ankle-pitch power by 53.5%. These findings demonstrate that incorporating actuator symmetry through parallel joint design significantly reduces actuator stress, improves load sharing, and enhances overall energy efficiency in bipedal locomotion. This study explores how Speech and Elocution Training (SET) activates language potential and fosters career-oriented development among higher vocational students through self-efficacy mechanisms. Through qualitative interviews with four vocational graduates who participated in SET 5 to 10 years ago, the research identifies three key findings. First, SET comprises curriculum content (e.g., workplace communication modules such as hosting, storytelling, and sales pitching) and classroom training using multimodal TED resources and Toastmasters International-simulated practices, which spark language potential through skill-focused, realistic exercises. Second, these pedagogies facilitate a progression where initial language potential evolves from nascent career interests into concrete job-seeking intentions and long-term career plans: completing workplace-related speech tasks boosts confidence in career choices, planning, and job competencies, enabling adaptability to professional challenges. Third, SET aligns with Bandura’s four self-efficacy determinants; these are successful experiences (including personalized and virtual skill acquisition and certified affirmation), vicarious experiences (via observation platforms and constructive peer modeling), verbal persuasion (direct instructional feedback and indirect emotional support), and the arousal of optimistic emotions (the cognitive reframing of challenges and direct desensitization to anxieties). These mechanisms collectively create a positive cycle that enhances self-efficacy, amplifies language potential, and clarifies career intentions. While highlighting SET’s efficacy, this study notes a small sample size limitation, urging future mixed-methods studies with diverse samples to validate these mechanisms across broader vocational contexts and refine understanding of language training’s role in fostering linguistic competence and career readiness. The growing demand for cost-effective, high-quality protein ingredients in the meat industry highlights the need for advanced processing methods capable of producing uniform, functional meat–bone pastes from poultry by-products. This study investigates the optimization of colloid milling parameters for the fine grinding of chicken meat–bone by-products, with a focus on improving particle size distribution, rheological properties, and processing efficiency. A modified rotor–stator system with teeth inclined at 20° and a reduced pitch (0.5 mm) was compared to a conventional configuration (45° inclination, 1.5 mm pitch). Experiments were conducted at rotor speeds ranging from 1000 to 4000 rpm, with a fixed clearance of 0.1 mm. The results showed that the modified design significantly enhanced grinding efficiency, reducing the proportion of bone fragments > 1 mm and yielding over 70% of particles under 0.1 mm at 3000 rpm. Viscosity and shear stress measurements indicated that grinding at 3000 rpm yielded a dynamic viscosity of 71,507 Pa·s and a shear stress of 43,531 mPa·s, values that were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those observed at other tested speeds, thereby producing a paste consistency with the most favorable balance of elasticity and flowability. At 4000 rpm, the temperature rise (up to 32 °C) led to partial denaturation of muscle proteins, accompanied by emulsion destabilization and disruption of the protein gel matrix, resulting in reductions in the viscosity and water-binding capacity of the paste. Comparative analysis confirmed that tool geometry and rotor speed have critical effects on grinding quality, energy use, and thermal load. The optimal operating parameters, 3000 rpm with modified rotor–stator teeth, achieve the finest, most homogeneous bone paste while preserving protein functionality and minimizing energy losses. These findings support the development of energy-efficient grinding equipment for the valorization of poultry by-products in emulsified meat formulations. Full article

Robotics plays a pivotal role in contemporary space missions, particularly in the development of robotic manipulators for operations in environments that are inaccessible to humans. In accordance with the trend of integrating multiple functionalities into a single system, this study evaluates the feasibility of using a robotic manipulator, termed a C-arm, for passive attitude control of a 1U CubeSat. A simplified multibody model of the CubeSat system was employed to assess the robotic arm’s functionality as a gravity gradient boom and subsequently as a passive magnetic control mechanism by utilising a permanent magnet at its extremity. The effectiveness of the C-arm as a gravitational boom is constrained by size and weight, as evidenced by the simulations; the pitch angle oscillated around ±40°, while roll and yaw angles varied up to 30° and 35°, respectively. Subsequent evaluations sought to enhance pointing accuracy through the utilisation of permanent magnets. However, the absence of dissipative forces resulted in attitude instabilities. In conclusion, the integration of a robotic arm into a 1U CubeSat for passive attitude control shows potential, especially for missions where pointing accuracy can tolerate a certain range, as is typical of CubeSat nanosatellite missions. Substructure Optimization for a Semi-Submersible Floating Wind Turbine Under Extreme Environmental Conditions

A barrier to the adoption of floating offshore wind turbines is their high cost relative to conventional fixed-bottom wind turbines. The largest contributor to this cost disparity is generally the floating substructure, due to its large size and complexity. Typically, a primary driver of the geometry and size of a floating substructure is the extreme environmental load case of Region 4, where platform loads are the greatest due to the impact of extreme wind and waves. To address this cost issue, a new concept for a floating offshore wind turbine’s substructure, its moorings, and anchors was optimized for a reference 10-MW turbine under extreme load conditions using OpenFAST. The levelized cost of energy was minimized by fixing the above-water turbine design and minimizing the equivalent substructure mass, which is based on the mass of all substructure components (stem, legs, buoyancy cans, mooring, and anchoring system) and associated costs of their materials, manufacturing, and installation. A stepped optimization scheme was used to allow an understanding of their influence on both the system cost and system dynamic responses for the extreme parked load case. The design variables investigated include the length and tautness ratio of the mooring lines, length and draft of the cans, and lengths of the legs and the stem. The dynamic responses investigated include the platform pitch, platform roll, nacelle horizontal acceleration, and can submergence. Some constraints were imposed on the dynamic responses of interest, and the metacentric height of the floating system was used to ensure static stability. The results offer insight into the parametric influence on turbine motion and on the potential savings that can be achieved through optimization of individual substructure components. A 36% reduction in substructure costs was achieved while slightly improving the hydrodynamic stability in pitch and yielding a somewhat large surge motion and slight roll increase. Full article

Directed self-assembly (DSA) lithography, a cutting-edge technology based on the self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs), has received significant attention in recent years. Combining DSA with established lithography technologies, such as extreme ultraviolet (EUV), deep ultraviolet (DUV), electron beam lithography, and nanoimprint lithography, significantly enhances the resolution of target patterns and device density. Currently, there are two commonly used methods in DSA: graphoepitaxy, employing lithographically defined topographic templates to guide BCP assembly, and chemoepitaxy, utilizing chemically patterned surfaces with precisely controlled interfacial energies to direct nanoscale phase segregation. Through novel DSA lithography technology, nanoscale patterns with smaller feature sizes and higher densities can be obtained, realizing the miniaturization of hole and line patterns and pitch multiplication and improving the roughness and local critical dimension uniformity (LCDU). It is gradually becoming one of the most promising and advanced lithography techniques. DSA lithography technology has been applied in logic, memory, and optoelectronic device fabrications. Development and Optimization of a Novel Semi-Submersible Floater for Floating Wind Turbines in the South China Sea

To mitigate the issue of high-pitch natural frequency in V-shaped floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), a novel semi-submersible floater design, termed NewSemi, is proposed in this study. The structural performance of the NewSemi floater is compared with that of two existing 5 MW FOWTs, namely, the V-shaped and Braceless. Frequency domain analysis demonstrates that the NewSemi floater exhibits the most favorable response amplitude operator (RAO) in the pitch direction, along with superior damping characteristics. The result reveals a 16.44% reduction in pitch natural frequency compared to the V-shaped floater. Time-domain analysis under extreme conditions reveals 14.6% and 65.2% reductions in mean surge and pitch motions compared to Braceless FOWT, demonstrating enhanced stability. In addition, compared with the V-shaped FOWT, it exhibits smaller standards and deviations in surge and pitch motion, with reductions of 11.3% and 31.9%, respectively. To accommodate the trend toward larger FOWTs, an optimization procedure for scaling up floater designs is developed in this study. Using a differential evolution algorithm, the optimization process adjusts column diameter and spacing while considering motion response and steel usage constraints. The NewSemi floater is successfully scaled from 5 MW to 10 MW, and the effects of this scaling on motion and structural dynamics are examined. Numerical analysis indicates that as turbine size increases, the motion response under extreme sea conditions decreases, while structural dynamic responses, including blade root torque, rotor thrust, tower-base-bending moment and axial force, significantly increase. The maximum values of blade root torque and tower-base-bending moment increase by 10.4 times and 3.95 times in different load cases, respectively, while the mooring forces remain stable. This study offers practical engineering guidance for the design and optimization of next-generation floating wind turbines, enhancing their performance and scalability in offshore wind energy applications. With the evolution of synchrotron light sources to fourth generation (diffraction-limited storage rings), the brilliance is increased by several orders of magnitude compared to third generation facilities. For example, the Swiss Light Source (SLS) has been upgraded to SLS 2.0, promising a horizontal emittance reduced by a factor of 40, and a brilliance up to two orders of magnitude (three at higher energies). A key challenge arising from the increased flux is the heightened accumulated dose in silicon sensors, which leads to a significant increase in radiation damage. This translates into an increase of both noise and dark current, as well as a reduction in the dynamic range for long exposure times, thus affecting the performance of the detector, in particular, for charge-integrating detectors. We have designed sensors with a 4 × 4 mm2 pixel array featuring 16 design variations of 25 µm pitch pixels with different implant and metal sizes and tested them bump-bonded to MÖNCH 0.3, a charge integrating hybrid pixel detector readout ASIC. Following a first assessment of the functionality and performance of the different pixel designs, the assembly has been irradiated with X-rays. The variation in the tested parameters was characterized at different accumulated doses up to 100 kGy at the sensor entrance window side. The annealing dynamics at room temperature have also been measured. The results show that the default pixel design is currently not optimal and can benefit from layout changes (reduction in the inter-pixel gap area with full metal coverage of the implant). Further studies on the metal coverage over large implants could be conducted. The layout changes are, however, not sufficient for future full-sized sensors, requiring improved radiation hardness and long-term stability, and additional strategies such as focusing on detector cooling and changes in sensor technologies would be required. Wind turbines align with the wind direction and adjust to wind speed by rotating their nacelle and blades using electromechanical or hydraulic actuators. Due to the fact that the rated capacity of wind turbines is increasing and that the actuators are reaching some size limits, the current solution is to install several actuators at each joint until the required torque is reached. The problem with this approach is that, despite the fact the actuators can be selected from the same type and series, they typically have distinct parameters, resulting in different behaviours. The synchronisation of actuators of wind turbines has still not been studied in the specialised literature. Therefore, a control approach for the synchronisation of the pitch actuators is proposed in this work. Two cases are considered: the synchronisation of torque outputs and the synchronisation of position angle. The simulation results indicate that the proposed solution is effective for synchronising actuators, either when they are placed together on the same blade or when they are on separate blades while simultaneously following the collective pitch control command. Low-cost MEMS sensors are widely utilized in UAV platforms to address attitude estimation problems due to their compact size, low power consumption, and cost-effectiveness. Diverse UAV payloads pose new challenges for attitude estimation, such as magnetic interference environments and high dynamic environments. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical decoupled attitude estimation algorithm, termed HDAEA. Initially, a novel hierarchical decoupling approach is introduced for the attitude and angle representation of the direction cosine matrix, enabling the representation of angles in a new manner. This method reduces the data dimensionality and nonlinearity of observation equations. Furthermore, a magnetic interference identification algorithm is proposed to compute the magnetic interference intensity accurately and quantitatively. Combining the quantified errors of estimated state variables, an error model for magnetic interference and attitude angles in high-dynamic environments is constructed. Subsequently, the proposed error model is employed to calibrate the hierarchical decoupled angles using accelerometer and magnetometer measurements, effectively mitigating the impact of magnetic interference on the calculation of pitch angles and roll angles. Moreover, the integration of the proposed hierarchical decoupled attitude estimation algorithm with the error-state extended Kalman filter reduces system nonlinearity and minimizes linearization errors. Experimental results demonstrate that HDAEA exhibits significantly improved attitude estimation accuracy of UAV payloads. Full article

This study introduces a novel magnetorheological (MR) damper for semi-active vehicle suspension systems that enhance ride comfort and handling stability. The proposed damper integrates reverse and normal damping modes, enabling independent control of rebound and compression strokes through an external MR valve. This configuration supports four damping modes—Soft/Soft, Hard/Soft, Soft/Hard, and Hard/Hard—allowing adaptability to varying driving conditions. Magnetic circuit optimization ensures rapid damping force adjustments (≈10 ms), while a semi-active control algorithm incorporating skyhook logic, roll, dive, and squat control strategies was implemented. Experimental validation on a mid-sized sedan demonstrated significant improvements, including a 30–40% reduction in vertical acceleration and pitch/roll rates. These enhancements improve vehicle safety by reducing body motion during critical maneuvers, potentially lowering accident risk and driver fatigue. In addition to performance gains, the simplified MR damper architecture and modular control facilitate easier integration into diverse vehicle platforms, potentially streamlining vehicle design and manufacturing processes and enabling cost-effective adoption in mass-market applications. These findings highlight the potential of MR dampers to support next-generation vehicle architectures with enhanced adaptability and manufacturability. Full article

The harmony search (HS) algorithm is a novel metaheuristic which has been widely used to solve both continuous and discrete optimization problems. In order to improve the performance and simplify the implementation of the HS algorithm for solving the 0-1 knapsack problem (0-1KP), this paper proposes a heuristics-guided simplified discrete harmony search (SDHS) algorithm which does not use random search operator and has only one intrinsic parameter, harmony memory size. The SDHS algorithm uses a memory consideration operator to construct a feasible solution, and then the constructed solution is further enhanced by a solution-level pitch adjustment operator. Two heuristics, the profit–weight ratio of an item and the profit of an item, are used to greedily guide the memory consideration operator and the solution-level pitch adjustment operator, respectively. In the memory consideration operator, items are considered in non-ascending order of profit–weight ratio assigned from the harmony memory. In the solution-level pitch adjustment operator, items not in the knapsack are attempted to be selected in non-ascending order of profit. The SDHS algorithm outperforms several state-of-the-art algorithms, with an average improvement of 0.55% in the quality of solutions on large problem instances. Full article

As CMOS technology continues to downsize to the nanometer range, the exponential growth predicted by Moore’s Law has been significantly decelerated. Doubling chip density in the two-dimensional domain will no longer be feasible without further device downsizing. Meanwhile, emerging new device technologies, which may be incompatible with the mainstream CMOS technology, offer potential performance enhancements for system integration and could be options for a More-than-Moore system. Additionally, the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) demands ever-high computing power and energy-efficient computing platforms. Heterogeneous multi-chip integration, which combines diverse components or a larger number of functional blocks with different process technologies and materials into compact 3D systems, has emerged as a critical pathway to overcome the performance limitations of monolithic integrated circuits (ICs), such as limited process/material options, low yield, and multifunctional design complexity. Furthermore, it sustains Moore’s Law progression for a further smaller footprint and higher integration density, and it has become pivotal for “More-than-Moore” strategies in the next CMOS technology revolution. This approach is also crucial for sustaining computational advancements with low-power dissipation and low-latency interconnects in the coming decades. The key techniques for heterogeneous wafer-to-wafer bonding involve both copper-to-copper (Cu-Cu) and dielectric-to-dielectric bonding. This review provides a comprehensive comparison of recent advancements in Cu-Cu bonding techniques. Major issues, such as plasma treatment to activate bonding surfaces, passivation to suppress oxidation, Cu geometry, and microstructure optimization to enhance interface diffusion and regrowth, and the use of polymers as dielectrics to mitigate contamination and wafer warpage, as well as pitch size scaling, are discussed in detail. Wire-based laser metal deposition is an additive manufacturing process that can be used in the efficient manufacturing of complex structures. This paper utilizes a three-beam coaxial laser wire system to explore the effect of process parameters on the resultant deposition density. The reduction in or elimination of defects is important to the mechanical properties of the additively manufactured material and the widespread adoption of additive manufacturing processes. In this work, two-bead-wide walls were deposited under varying experimental conditions, including the traverse feed rate and workpiece illumination proportion. A method for calculating the bead pitch and layer height increment based on the geometry of the deposited material was developed. The deposited samples were micro-CT-scanned to characterize internal defects at a high resolution. The volume of the detected defects was measured and compared to the total sample volume to calculate a defect rate for each run of the experiment. The traverse feed rate and defocusing level were found to have a significant impact on the output defect rate. As these process parameters were increased, the defect rate decreased. Across the experimental levels, the defect volume percentage was reduced from 1.021% to 0.062%. This reduction in internal defect size enhances the material’s mechanical performance and ensures its suitability for aerospace applications. Full article
