Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cancer drive demand for therapeutic functional foods. This study developed freeze-dried fermented camel milk (FCM) with Ajwa date pulp (ADP), evaluating its physical and functional properties, probiotic survival, and potential benefits for diabetes and cancer. To achieve this target, six FCM formulations were prepared using ABT-5 starter culture (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus) with or without Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus B-1937 and ADP (12% or 15%). The samples were freeze-dried, and their functional properties, such as water activity, dispersibility, water absorption capacity, water absorption index, water solubility index, insolubility index, and sedimentation, were assessed. Reconstitution properties such as density, flowability, air content, porosity, loose bulk density, packed bulk density, particle density, carrier index, Hausner ratio, porosity, and density were examined. In addition, color and probiotic survivability under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were analyzed. Also, antidiabetic potential was assessed via α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assays, while cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay on Caco-2 cells. The results show that ADP supplementation significantly improved dispersibility (up to 72.73% in FCM15D+L). These improvements are attributed to changes in particle size distribution and increased carbohydrate and mineral content, which facilitate powder rehydration and reduce clumping. All FCM variants demonstrated low water activity (0.196–0.226), indicating good potential for shelf stability. The reconstitution properties revealed that FCM powders with ADP had higher bulk and packed densities but lower particle density and porosity than controls. Including ADP reduced interstitial air and increased occluded air within the powders, which may minimize oxidation risks and improve packaging efficiency. ADP incorporation resulted in a significant decrease in lightness (L*) and increases in redness (a*) and yellowness (b*), with greater pigment and phenolic content at higher ADP levels. These changes reflect the natural colorants and browning reactions associated with ADP, leading to a more intense and visually distinct product. Probiotic survivability was higher in ADP-fortified samples, with L. acidophilus and B. bifidum showing resilience in intestinal conditions. The FCM15D+L formulation exhibited potent antidiabetic effects, with IC50 values of 111.43 μg mL−1 for α-amylase and 77.21 μg mL−1 for α-glucosidase activities, though lower than control FCM (8.37 and 10.74 μg mL−1, respectively). Cytotoxicity against Caco-2 cells was most potent in non-ADP samples (IC50: 82.22 μg mL−1 for FCM), suggesting ADP and L. rhamnosus may reduce antiproliferative effects due to proteolytic activity. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that ADP-enriched FCM is a promising functional food with enhanced probiotic viability, antidiabetic potential, and desirable physical properties. This work highlights the potential of camel milk and date synergies in combating some NCDs in vitro, suggesting potential for functional food application. Full article

Background: Graphene oxide (GO) is widely explored as a functional additive in polymer composites; however, its simple physical dispersion in dental resins often leads to poor interfacial stability and limited long-term performance. Covalent functionalization may overcome these limitations by enabling chemical integration into the polymer matrix. This study presents the synthesis and FT-IR/Raman characterization of GRAPHYMERE®, a novel graphene oxide-based monomer obtained through exfoliation, amine functionalization with 1,6-hexanediamine, and transamidation with methyl methacrylate. Methods: A novel GO-based monomer, GRAPHYMERE®, was synthesized through a three-step process involving GO exfoliation, amine functionalization with 1,6-hexanediamine, and transamidation with methyl methacrylate to introduce polymerizable acrylic groups. The resulting product was characterized using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Results: Spectroscopic analyses confirmed the presence of aliphatic chains and amine functionalities on the GO surface. Although some expected signals were overlapped, the data suggest successful surface modification and partial insertion of methacrylamide groups. The process is straightforward, uses low-toxicity reagents, and avoids complex reaction steps. Conclusions: GRAPHYMERE® represents a chemically modified GO monomer potentially suitable for copolymerization within dental resin matrices. While its structural features support compatibility with radical polymerization systems, further studies are required to assess its mechanical performance and functional properties in dental resin applications. Semi-natural grasslands are some of the most species-rich habitats in Europe and provide important ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration and soil fertility maintenance. This study investigates how different intensities of grassland management affect the composition of functional groups and soil chemical properties. Five grassland management systems were analyzed: Cut3—three cuts per year; LGI—low grazing intensity; CG—combined cutting and grazing; Cut4—four cuts per year; and HGI—high grazing intensity. The functional groups assessed were grasses, legumes and forbs, while soil samples from three depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) were analyzed for their chemical properties (soil organic carbon—SOC; soil total nitrogen—STN; inorganic soil carbon—SIC; soil organic matter—SOM; potassium oxide—K2O; phosphorus pentoxide—P2O5; C/N ratio; and pH) and physical properties (volumetric soil water content—VWC; bulk density—BD; and porosity—POR). The results showed that less intensive systems had a higher proportion of legumes, while species diversity, as measured via the Shannon index, was the highest in the Cut4 system. The CG system tended to have the highest SOC and STN at a 0–10 cm depth, with a similar trend observed for SOCstock at a 0–30 cm depth. The Cut4, HGI and CG systems also had an increased STNstock. Both grazing systems had the highest P2O5 content. A tendency towards a higher BD was observed in the top 10 cm of soil in the more intensive systems. Choosing a management strategy that is tailored to local climate and site conditions is crucial for maintaining grassland stability, enhancing carbon sequestration and promoting long-term sustainability in the context of climate change. Surface microstructure of grains vastly decides the electrochemical performance of nickel-rich oxide cathodes, which can improve their interfacial kinetics and structural stability to realize their further popularization. Herein, taking the representative LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) materials as an example, a surface heterojunction structure construction strategy to enhance the interface characteristics of high-nickel materials by introducing interfacial ZnO sites has been designed (NCA@ZnO). Impressively, this heterointerface creates a strong built-in electric field, which significantly improves electron/Li-ion diffusion kinetics. Concurrently, the ZnO layer acts as an effective physical barrier against electrolyte corrosion, notably suppressing interfacial parasitic reactions and ultimately optimizing the structure stability of NCA@ZnO. Benefiting from synchronous optimization of interface stability and kinetics, NCA@ZnO exhibits advanced cycling performance with the capacity retention of 83.7% after 160 cycles at a superhigh rate of 3 C during 3.0–4.5 V. The prominent electrochemical performance effectively confirms that the surface structure design provides a critical approach toward obtaining high-performance cathode materials with enhanced long-cycling stability. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) have become essential components in a broad range of modern devices, including smartphones, flat-panel displays, and photovoltaic cells. Currently, indium tin oxide (ITO) is used in approximately 90% of these devices. However, ITO prices continue to rise due to the limited supply of indium (In), making the development of alternative materials for TCOs indispensable. Therefore, this study highlights the latest advances in creating new, affordable materials, with a focus on aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO). Over the last few decades, this material has been widely studied to improve its physical properties, particularly its low electrical resistivity, which can affect the performance of various devices. Now, it is close to replacing ITO due to several advantages including cost-effectiveness, stability under hydrogen plasma, low processing temperatures, and lack of toxicity. Besides that, in comparison to other TCOs such as IZO, IGZO, or IZrO, AZO achieved a low electrical resistivity (10−5 ohm cm) while maintaining a high transparency across the visible spectrum (over 85%). Additionally, due to the increasing development of technologies utilizing such materials, it is essential to develop more effective techniques for producing TCOs on a larger scale. A high intake of saturated fats and cholesterol from processed meats is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. This study aimed to develop a nutritionally enhanced Bologna-type sausage by partially replacing the beef content with a structured emulsion gel (EG) formulated from pine nut oil, inulin, carrageenan, and whey protein concentrate. The objective was to improve its lipid quality and functional performance while maintaining product integrity and consumer acceptability. Three sausage formulations were prepared: a control and two variants with 7% and 10% EG, which substituted for the beef content. The emulsion gel was characterized regarding its physical and thermal stability. Sausages were evaluated for their proximate composition, fatty acid profile, cholesterol content, pH, cooking yield, water-holding capacity, emulsion stability, instrumental texture, microstructure (via SEM), oxidative stability (TBARSs), and sensory attributes. Data were analyzed using a one-way and two-way ANOVA with Duncan’s test (p < 0.05). The EG’s inclusion significantly reduced the total and saturated fat and cholesterol, while increasing protein and unsaturated fatty acids. The 10% EG sample achieved a PUFA/SFA ratio of 1.00 and an over 80% reduction in atherogenic and thrombogenic indices. Functional improvements were observed in emulsion stability, cooking yield, and water retention. Textural and visual characteristics remained within acceptable sensory thresholds. SEM images showed more homogenous matrix structures in the EG samples. TBARS values increased slightly over 18 days of refrigeration but remained below rancidity thresholds. This period was considered a pilot-scale evaluation of oxidative trends. Sensory testing confirmed that product acceptability was not negatively affected. The partial substitution of beef content with pine nut oil-based emulsion gel offers a clean-label strategy to enhance the nutritional quality of Bologna-type sausages while preserving functional and sensory performance. This approach may support the development of health-conscious processed meat products aligned with consumer and regulatory demands. Full article

Lost circulation is a major challenge in oil and gas drilling operations, severely restricting drilling efficiency and compromising operational safety. Conventional bridging and plugging materials rely on precise particle-to-fracture size matching, resulting in low success rates. Self-healing gels penetrate loss zones as discrete particles that progressively swell, accumulate, and self-repair in integrated gel masses to effectively seal fracture networks. Self-healing gels effectively overcome the shortcomings of traditional bridging agents including poor adaptability to fractures, uncontrollable gel formation of conventional downhole crosslinking gels, and the low strength of conventional pre-crosslinked gels. This work employs stearyl methacrylate (SMA) as a hydrophobic monomer, acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) as hydrophilic monomers, and graphene oxide (GO) as an inorganic dopant to develop a GO-based self-healing organic–inorganic hybrid plugging material (SG gel). The results demonstrate that the incorporation of GO significantly enhances the material’s mechanical and rheological properties, with the SG-1.5 gel exhibiting a rheological strength of 3750 Pa and a tensile fracture stress of 27.1 kPa. GO enhances the crosslinking density of the gel network through physical crosslinking interactions, thereby improving thermal stability and reducing the swelling ratio of the gel. Under conditions of 120 °C and 6 MPa, SG-1.5 gel demonstrated a fluid loss volume of only 34.6 mL in 60–80-mesh sand bed tests. This gel achieves self-healing within fractures through dynamic hydrophobic associations and GO-enabled physical crosslinking interactions, forming a compact plugging layer. It provides an efficient solution for lost circulation control in drilling fluids. Full article

Liquid metals (LMs), with their unique combination of high electrical conductivity and mechanical deformability, have emerged as promising materials for stretchable electronics and biointerfaces. However, the practical application of bulk LMs in wearable sensors has been hindered by processing challenges and low stability. To overcome these limitations, liquid metal particles (LMPs) encapsulated by native oxide shells have gained attention as versatile and stable fillers for stretchable and conductive composites. Recent advances have focused on the development of LM-based hybrid composites that combine LMPs with metal, carbon, or polymeric fillers. These systems offer enhanced electrical and mechanical properties and can form conductive networks without the need for additional sintering processes. They also impart composites with multiple functions such as self-healing, electromagnetic interference shielding, and recyclability. Hence, the present review summarizes the fabrication methods and functional properties of LM-based composites, with a particular focus on their applications in wearable sensing. In addition, recent developments in the use of LM composites for physical motion monitoring (e.g., strain and pressure sensing) and electrophysiological signal recording (e.g., EMG and ECG) are presented, and the key challenges and opportunities for next-generation wearable platforms are discussed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of deacidifying treatments for the restoration of textiles used as supports for works of art, with particular attention to the chemical stability, colour variation and mechanical resistance of the materials over time. The present study involved the analysis of two products: BookkeeperTM, containing magnesium oxide, and NanorestoreTM, a dispersion of calcium hydroxide in alcoholic solutions of ethanol and 2-propanol. The products were applied to a series of tests on cotton, linen and jute fabrics. The experimental approach comprised an artificial degradation process of the fabrics, followed by the application of the treatments and an accelerated ageing cycle. A series of parameters were monitored throughout the experiment, encompassing surface pH, chromatic shifts ascertained through colorimetric measurements and the morphological transformations of the fabrics, as elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS). The findings yielded from this study have enabled the delineation of the behaviour exhibited by the treated materials over an extended timeframe. This underscores the significance of a judicious selection of treatments, contingent upon the particular chemical and physical attributes inherent to the fabrics in question. Full article

Background/Objectives: The work presented herein focused on the development and characterization of a transdermal caffeine platform fabricated from ultrathin micro- and submicron fibers produced via electrospinning. Methods: The formulations incorporated caffeine encapsulated in a polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix, combined with various permeation enhancers. A backing layer made of annealed electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) facilitated the lamination of the two layers to form the final multilayer patch. Comprehensive characterization was conducted, utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess the fiber morphology, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) for chemical detection and to assess the stability of the caffeine, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) along with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) to analyze the physical state of the caffeine within the fibers of the active layer. Additionally, Franz cell permeation studies were performed using both synthetic membranes (Strat-M) and ex vivo human stratum corneum (SC) to evaluate and model the permeation kinetics. Results: These experiments demonstrated the significant role of enhancers in modulating the caffeine permeation rates provided by the patch, achieving permeation rates of up to 0.73 mg/cm2 within 24 h. Conclusions: This work highlights the potential of using electro-hydrodynamic processing technology to develop innovative transdermal delivery systems for drugs, offering a promising strategy for enhancing efficacy and innovative therapeutic direct plasma administration. The microencapsulation of olive oil plays an important role in food science and technology by controlling oxidative deterioration, improving emulsification, and preserving bioactive properties, ultimately benefiting product formulations in both the culinary and medical fields. This study is important in that it reveals the effect of the microencapsulation process on aroma compounds and provides a data set for investigating the potential use of powdered products. In this study, the microencapsulation of emulsions prepared with carbohydrate–protein-based coating materials of oils obtained from two different olive varieties (Nizip and Kilis Yaglik) grown in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey was carried out via the freeze-drying method. In the study, emulsions were formed using protein isolate (WPI) and maltodextrin (MD) at different ratios (1:1, 1:4, 1:10) as wall materials, and microcapsule powder products were obtained via the freeze-drying method. While the physical properties of the emulsions and microcapsules were examined, the oxidative stability, fatty acid profile, and aroma compounds were examined in oils and microcapsules. The changes in oxidative stability and aroma compounds were also monitored during storage (0, 45, and 90 days at room temperature). According to the data obtained, it was observed that the emulsion stability increased with increasing maltodextrin content. Similarly, the microencapsulation efficiency was also found to change in direct proportion to the maltodextrin ratio. Encapsulated samples showed better oxidative stability than oils. Oleic acid was the predominant fatty acid in both oils and microencapsulated products, followed by palmitic and linoleic acids. According to the aroma compounds, the microcapsules obtained from both types of oils were clearly separated from the oils. Full article

Milk powder is a key nutritional alternative to breastfeeding, but its thermal properties, which vary with temperature, can affect its quality and shelf life. However, there is little information about the physical and chemical properties of powdered milk in several countries. This dataset contains the result of an analysis of the aflatoxins, macroelement and microelement concentrations, oxidative stability, and fatty acid profile of infant formula milk powder. The concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn in digested powdered milk samples were quantified through inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to estimate the oxidative stability of infant formula milk powder, while the methyl esters of the fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography. Most milk samples showed significant concentrations of As (0.5583–1.3101 mg/kg) and Pb (0.2588–0.0847 mg/kg). The concentrations of aflatoxins G2 and B2 are below the limits established by Brazilian regulatory agencies. The thermal degradation behavior of the samples is not the same due to their fatty acid compositions. The data presented may be useful in identifying compounds present in infant milk powder used as a substitute for breast milk and understanding the mechanism of thermal stability and degradation, ensuring food safety for those who consume them. The aim of this study was to develop and characterize antioxidant-active films for potential food packaging applications. The films were produced by casting aqueous solutions containing semolina flour (6% w/w), pectin extracted from passion fruit (1% w/w), inverted sugar (1% w/w), and sucrose (1% w/w), incorporating hydroalcoholic extracts from jatoba stem bark (X1) and pods (X2) at concentrations ranging from 0 to 1% (w/w). The films were characterized in terms of their functional, physical, chemical, structural, and degradation properties. The formulation that showed the best performance, referred to as the optimized formulation (FO), contained 0.5% X1 and 0.5% X2, presenting a high phenolic compound content (8.80 mg GAE/g), strong antioxidant activity as determined by the DPPH method (75.28%) and FRAP assay (6.02 mmol FeSO4/g), good thermal stability (350 °C), and a high soil degradation rate (83.47% in 15 days). These results indicate that the FO film has potential application as a primary packaging material with antioxidant function for oxidation-sensitive foods, meeting the demand for biodegradable and environmentally sustainable solutions in the food industry. Natural polymer-based nanoparticles have emerged as promising stabilizers for Pickering emulsions, offering biocompatibility, environmental sustainability, and improved protection of active compounds. This study developed chitosan/gum arabic (CH/GA) nanoparticles as solid stabilizers for quercetin-loaded Pickering emulsions to enhance the stability and antioxidant bioactivity of quercetin (QE), a plant-derived flavonoid known for its potent radical-scavenging activity but limited by oxidative degradation. A systematic formulation strategy was employed to evaluate the effects of CH/GA concentration (0.5–2.0% w/v), oil type (olive, soybean, sunflower, and coconut), and oil volume fraction (ϕ = 0.5–0.7) on emulsion stability. The formulation containing 1.5% CH/GA and olive oil at ϕ = 0.6 exhibited optimal physical and interfacial stability. Quercetin (0.1% w/w) was incorporated into the optimized emulsions and characterized for long-term stability, particle size, droplet morphology, rheology, antioxidant activity (DPPH), cytocompatibility, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) protection using HaCaT keratinocytes. The olive oil-based formulation (D1-QE) exhibited greater viscosity retention and antioxidant stability than its soybean-based counterpart (E2-QE) under both room temperature (RT) and accelerated heating–cooling (H/C) storage conditions. Confocal microscopy confirmed the accumulation of CH/GA nanoparticles at the oil–water interface, forming a dense interfacial barrier and enhancing emulsion stability. HPLC analysis showed that D1-QE retained 92.8 ± 0.5% of QE at RT and 82.8 ± 1.5% under H/C conditions after 30 days. Antioxidant activity was largely preserved, with only 4.7 ± 1.7% and 14.9 ± 4.8% loss of DPPH radical scavenging activity at RT and H/C, respectively. Cytotoxicity testing in HaCaT keratinocytes confirmed that the emulsions were non-toxic at 1 mg/mL QE and effectively reduced H2O2-induced oxidative stress, decreasing intracellular ROS levels by 75.16%. These results highlight the potential of CH/GA-stabilized Pickering emulsions as a polymer-based delivery system for maintaining the stability and functional antioxidant activity of QE in bioactive formulations. The type of foaming agent significantly influences the pore structure and properties of foam ceramics, particularly their compressive strength. This study used quartz sand tailings and waste glass powder as raw materials to fabricate foam ceramic materials. The effects of different foaming agents (SiC, CaCO3, and MnO2) on the phase evolution, microstructure, pore size distribution, and physical properties of the foam ceramics were investigated, and the foaming mechanisms were elucidated. The results indicated that when SiC was employed as the foaming agent, the viscosity was high at elevated temperatures and pores with irregular shapes tended to form because of the anisotropy of the quartz crystals. CaO generated from CaCO3 decomposition reduced the melt viscosity by disrupting the [SiO4] tetrahedra, whereas the formation of anorthite and diopside stabilized the pore morphology, resulting in regular circular pores. When MnO2 was used as the foaming agent, the pressure from the gas produced during oxidation exceeded the surface tension of the molten phase owing to its viscosity, leading to the formation of larger, irregular, and interconnected pores. The foam ceramic material exhibited optimal properties when 2% CaCO3 was used as the foaming agent, with a water absorption rate of 30%, bulk density of 0.62 g/cm3, porosity of 68.4%, compressive strength of 9.67 MPa, and thermal conductivity of 0.26 W/(m·K).
