Interior-mounted permanent magnet (IPM) machines have been widely used in recent years due to their high efficiency, high torque/power densities, and so on. These machines can produce reluctance torque whereas their surface-mounted (SPM) counterparts cannot. Hence, IPMs are attractive in industrial applications that require high torque density. Id=0 control is commonly adopted to drive permanent magnet (PM) machines, and the strategy is attractive due to its simplicity. However, although it is suitable for SPMs, adopting it in IPMs sacrifices the reluctance torque that can be obtained from the machine. Hence, it is vital to control IPMs using the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) strategy. This paper adopts the MTPA strategy for a 4.1 kW prototype IPM machine. Test system configuration is discussed step by step by paying particular attention to potential practical issues and inspirational discussions on their solutions. The issues associated with misaligned rotor positions or whistling problems pertinent to inappropriate power conversion strategies are addressed to overcome such issues in practical IPM drives. Comprehensive discussions and extensive comparisons of well-matched simulation and experimental results of both Id=0- and MTPA-controlled drives at different evaluation metrics will be quite insightful to achieve efficiency-optimized IPM drives. This paper proposes a novel hybrid less-rare-earth permanent magnet (HLEPM) machine, which is designed to meet the demands of electric vehicle (EV) traction machines for high torque output and wide-speed-range high-efficiency performance. The designed machine features a unique hybrid permanent magnet arrangement, consisting of V-shaped rare-earth PMs and arc-shaped less-rare-earth PMs, respectively. The V-shaped rare-earth magnets can perform the flux-focusing effect well, not only enhancing the torque output capability but also improving the demagnetization with the standability of the arc-shaped less-rare-earth PMs during active short-circuit (ASC) conditions. First, the proposed machine is thoroughly designed and optimized to balance the torque capability and iron loss. Subsequently, the electromagnetic performance of the proposed HLEPM machine is evaluated using finite-element (FE) analysis and compared with that of a conventional double-layer V-shaped PMSM. Finally, the anti-demagnetization characteristics of the two machines under ASC conditions are analyzed in detail. The results validate the rationality and reliability of the proposed design. This paper introduces a hybrid analytical model (HAM) for the evaluation of permanent-magnet (PM) eddy-current loss in dual-stator single-rotor axial flux permanent-magnet machine (AFPMM), accounting for stator saturation. The proposed model integrates the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) with an analytical model based on scalar magnetic potential, enabling simultaneous consideration of different rotor positions and stator slotting effects. The three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) validates the no-load and armature reaction magnetic field calculated by HAM, as well as the PM eddy-current loss under both no-load and load conditions. Compared to 3D-FEM, the proposed model reduces the calculation time by more than 98% with an error of no more than 18%, demonstrating a significant advantage in terms of computational time. Based on the proposed model, the effects of air-gap length and slot opening width on PM eddy-current loss are analyzed; the results indicate that reducing the slot opening width can effectively mitigate PM eddy-current loss for AFPMM. Owing to the distinct advantages of stator–permanent magnet (PM) motors over other PM machines, their prominence in high-power-density applications is surging dramatically, capturing growing interest across diverse applications. This article proposes an innovative design procedure for two primary stator–PM motor types, flux switching and biased flux, yielding 30 novel motor designs. The procedure involves splitting teeth, incorporating a flux reversal effect, and embedding flux barriers into the conventional structure. The analytical reasons behind the novel motors’ architecture are mathematically expressed and verified using finite element analysis (FEA). Through an effective optimisation based on a multi-objective genetic algorithm, various feasible stator/rotor pole combinations are explored, with over 36,000 samples evaluated using FEA coupled with the algorithm. The electromagnetic characteristics of promising motors are analysed, revealing that adding the flux reversal effect and flux barriers, which reduce PM volume while decreasing leakage flux and enhancing air gap flux, improves torque production by up to 68%. Beyond torque enhancement, other electromagnetic parameters, including torque ripple, core loss, and the power factor, are also improved. The proposed motors enhance the PM torque density significantly by about 115% compared to conventional motors and reduce the motor costs. A generalised decision-making process and thermal analysis are applied to the top-performing motors. Additionally, the prototyping measures and considerations are thoroughly discussed. This paper proposes a hybrid brushless wound-rotor synchronous machine (HB-WRSM) with an outer rotor topology that can operate as a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), as well as an HB-WRSM. In the first part, the existing brushless wound-rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM) is modified into a hybrid model by introducing permanent magnets (PMs) in the rotor pole faces to improve the magnetic field strength and other performance variables of the machine. In the second part, a centrifugal switch is introduced, which can change the machine operation from HB-WRSM to PMSM. The proposed machine uses an inner stator, outer rotor model with 36 stator slots and 48 poles, making the stator winding a concentrated winding. The HB-WRSM is utilized for dual-speed applications such as washing machines that run at low speed (46 rpm) and high speed (1370 rpm). For high speed, to have a better efficiency and less torque ripple, the machine is switched to PMSM mode using a centrifugal switch. The results are compared with the existing BL-WRSM. A 2D model is simulated using ANSYS Electromagnetics Suite to validate the machine model and performance. Full article

This study proposes a rotational speed measurement machine based on the flux-switching principle with a 6-stator-slot/19-rotor-pole (6s/19p) topology. With a rotor shape similar to a variable reluctance sensor (VRS), the proposed machine features a simple and robust structure while ensuring the same output frequency as VRS. Additionally, compared to the conventional 12s/10p topology, the 6s/19p configuration reduces permanent magnet (PM) consumption by half while maintaining high induced voltage characteristics. A nonlinear analytical model (NAM), which incorporates the harmonic modeling (HM) technique and an iterative process, is presented. This model more accurately captures the rectangular shape of the PM and stator teeth while accounting for core saturation effects. Based on this model, the optimal dimensions of the proposed machine are investigated to achieve the best performance for speed measurement applications. A coupling FEA simulation between Ansys Maxwell and Twin Builder further analyzes the machine’s performance. Compared to a commercial product of the same size, the proposed machine achieves 31.5% higher output voltage while ensuring lower linearity errors. Moreover, superior load characteristics are observed, with a voltage drop of only 1.58% at 1500 rpm and 30 mA. The proposed machine and NAM provide an improved solution and analytical tool for speed measurement applications. Full article

The dual-stator permanent magnet (DSPM) machine has proved to have high space utilization and a redundant structure, which can be beneficial to improving the fault tolerance and torque density performance. In this paper, three types of DSPM machines are proposed and compared, where two sets of armature windings are wound in both inner/outer stators, producing more than one torque component compared with single-stator PM machines. The machine topology and operating principle of three DSPM machines are analyzed first. Next, feasible stator/rotor-pole number combinations are compared and determined. Furthermore, based on the finite-element (FE) method, both the electromagnetic performances of three DSPM machines under open-circuit and rated-load conditions after optimization are compared, aimed at generating maximum torque at fixed copper loss. The FE analyses indicate that the dual-stator consequent-pole permanent magnet (DSCPPM) machine generates maximum torque per PM volume, together with relatively high efficiency, which makes it a potentially hopeful candidate for low-speed and high-torque applications. In addition, a thermal analysis is carried out to confirm the validity of the design scheme. Finally, in order to verify the FE predictions, a prototype DSCPPM machine is manufactured and experimentally tested. Full article

In this paper, a new fault-tolerant consequent-pole hybrid excited (FTCPHE) machine with toroidal winding (TW) is designed for electric vehicles (EVs). In this proposed machine, U-type permanent magnets (PMs) are adopted in the consequent-pole rotor with the sequence of PM–iron–PM–iron. The stator tooth placed in the stator is classified into two groups to achieve hybrid excitation. The TW is positioned on the stator yoke to achieve the simple structure and excellent fault-tolerant ability. First, the topology of this proposed FTCPHE machine with the TW is briefly introduced and compared to that with the traditional combined winding. Second, the operation principle, the magnetic circuit, and the design procedure of the FTCPHE machine are analyzed and illustrated. Third, several key structural parameters of the proposed FTCPHE machine are discussed and designed to improve electromagnetic performances. Next, some electromagnetic properties, including the flux distribution, the no-load back-EMF, the electromagnetic torque, the cogging torque, and the fault-tolerant ability, are discussed in detail. Finally, a prototype of this proposed FTCPHE machine is manufactured to validate the simulated results. Full article

These days, as the application of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) and drive systems becomes popular, the reliability issue of PMSMs gains more and more attention. To improve the reliability of PMSMs, fault detection is one of the practical techniques that enables the early interference and mitigation of the faults and subsequently reduces the impact of the faults. In this paper, the state-of-the-art fault detection methods of PMSMs are systematically reviewed. Three typical faults, i.e., the inter-turn short-circuit fault, the PM partial demagnetization fault, and the eccentricity fault, are included. The existing methods are firstly classified into signal-, model-, and data-based methods, while the focus of this paper is laid on the signal sources and the signatures utilized in these methods. Based on this perspective, this paper intends to provide a new insight into the inherent commonalities and differences among these detection methods and thus inspire further innovation. Furthermore, comparison is conducted between methods based on different signatures. Finally, some issues in the existing methods are discussed, and future work is highlighted. Full article

This paper compares the electromagnetic performances of radial-flux, dual-rotor, permanent magnet (DRPM) machines with series (S) and parallel (P) magnetic circuits for two rotors, i.e., SDRPM and PDRPM, accounting for different slot/pole number combinations, stator winding configurations, and machine sizes. The machines are optimized using the finite element analysis (FEA) based on the genetic algorithm. It shows that the PDRPM machine with the tooth coil (TC) configuration has the highest permanent magnet (PM) utilisation compared to the PDRPM with toroidal winding (TW) configuration and the SDRPM machine with the TC configuration under different slot/pole number combinations. The scaling effects of the machine size on the torque have been investigated. The TW-PDRPM machine is suitable for large-radius and short-axial length applications due to the short end-winding length of the TW configuration, while the TC-PDRPM is better for small-radius and long-axial length applications. The TC-SDRPM performs well when both the machine outer radius and axial length increase. Finally, the TC-SDRPM and TW-PDRPM machines are prototyped and validated experimentally. Full article

To improve the flux regulation range of the Axial–Radial Flux Hybrid Excitation Machine (ARFHEM) and the utilization rate of permanent magnets (PMs), the effects of different length–diameter ratios (LDRs) on the ARFHEM performance are studied. Firstly, the principle of the flux regulation of the ARFHEM is introduced by means of the structure and equivalent magnetic circuit method. Then, based on the principle of the bypass effect, the analytical formulas of LDRs, the number of pole-pairs, and the flux regulation ability are derived, and then the restrictive relationship between the air-gap magnetic field, LDR, and the number of pole-pairs is revealed. On this basis, the influence of an electric LDR on motor performance is studied. By comparing and analyzing the air-gap magnetic density and no-load back electromotive force (EMF) of motors with different LDRs, the variation in the magnetic flux regulation ability of motors with different LDRs is obtained and its influence mechanism is revealed. In addition, the torque regulation ability and loss of motors with different LDRs are compared and analyzed, and the influence mechanism of the LDR on torque and loss is determined. This paper proposes a novel consequent pole machine (CPM) to improve cogging torque, torque ripple, and torque per magnet volume compared to a conventional CPM. The proposed structure consists of a consequent pole rotor that reduces permanent magnet (PM) material. Different from conventional surface permanent magnet machines (SPMs) and conventional CPMs, the proposed CPM has an additional iron pole (AIP) extension under the magnet. This structure is suggested in order to increase the magnet pole angle while maintaining the magnet volume by partially substituting the magnet with iron. The design of the proposed machine was optimized to achieve higher torque and lower torque ripple. Comparisons of the proposed CPM with a conventional SPM and CPM were conducted to show the superiority of the proposed CPM utilizing AIP. The results showed that the proposed CPM exhibits 68% lower cogging torque, 75% lower torque ripple, and 16% higher torque per magnet volume with the same magnet volume compared with the conventional CPM. Since the advent of rare-earth permanent magnet (PM) materials, PM synchronous machines (PMSMs) have become popular in power generation, industrial drives, and e-mobility. However, rare-earth PMs in PMSMs are prone to temperature- and operation-related irreversible demagnetization. Additionally, faults can endanger components like inverters, batteries, and mechanical structures. Designing a fault-tolerant machine requires considering these risks during the PMSM design phase. Traditional transient finite element analysis is time-consuming, but fast analytical simulation methods provide viable alternatives. This paper evaluates methods for analyzing dynamic three-phase short-circuit (3PSC) events in PMSMs. Experimental measurements on a PMSM prototype serve as benchmarks. The results show that accounting for machine saturation reduces discrepancies between measured and predicted outcomes by 20%. While spatial harmonic content and sub-transient reactance can be neglected in some cases, caution is required in other scenarios. Eddy currents in larger machines significantly impact 3PSC dynamics. This work provides a quick assessment based on general machine parameters, improving fault-tolerant PMSM design. Full article

To achieve the objective of high torque, a high utilization rate of PMs, and flexible flux regulation capability of the permanent magnet (PM) machine, an axial–radial flux type permanent magnet (ARFTPM) machine was studied in this paper. The working principle of the ARFTPM machine is analyzed by illustrating the flux paths. Then, the influence of stator slot number on the flux regulation capability and torque is studied. A full comparison of the main parameters and electromagnetic performances of the ARFTPM machine with different stator slot numbers is presented, including winding coefficient, back electromotive force (EMF), cogging torque, average torque, and torque-angle characteristics. The optimal stator slot number was obtained. Finally, the 12-slot/10-pole prototype machine is manufactured and tested to validate the simulation data and theoretical analysis. Full article

Rare-earth-based permanent magnets (PMs) have a vital role in numerous sustainable energy systems, such as electrical machines (EMs). However, their production can greatly harm the environment and their supply chain monopoly presents economic threats. Alternative materials are emerging, but the use of rare-earth PMs remains dominant due to their exceptional performance. Damage to magnet structure can cause loss of performance and efficiency, and propagation of cracks in PMs can result in breaking. In this context, prolonging the service life of PMs and ensuring that they remain damage-free and suitable for re-use is important both for sustainability reasons and cost management. This paper presents a new harmonic content diagnosis and motor performance analysis caused by various magnet structure defects or faults, such as cracked or broken magnets. The proposed method is used for modeling the successive physical failure of the magnet structure in the form of crack formation, crack growth, and magnet breakage. A surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is studied using simulation in Ansys Maxwell software (Version 2023), and different cracks and PM faults are modeled using the two-dimensional finite element method (FEM). The frequency domain simulation results demonstrate the influence of magnet cracks and their propagation on EM performance measures, such as stator current, distribution of magnetic flux density, back EMF, flux linkage, losses, and efficiency. The results show strong potential for application in health monitoring systems, which could be used to reduce the occurrence of in-service failures, thus reducing the usage of rare-earth magnet materials as well as cost.
