The restrictions on business and social activity during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to significant changes in consumption patterns worldwide. Such changes are causing structural shifts in the markets of goods and services, thus affecting regional resilience. In this article, we aim to assess the changing structure of the consumption of goods and services in highly urbanized Russian regions under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyze its effects on the lifestyle of the population. According to our results, some Russian regions demonstrate a return to previous consumption levels, while others exhibit the emergence of new dynamics. The conclusion is made that COVID restrictions have invoked a paradigm shift in consumer behavior toward investment in self-development, safety, and comfort. This observation should be taken into account when developing strategies for the recovery growth of regional economies. Full article

This research examines the shifting geography of small firm innovation in the U.S. by tracking the location of small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer (STTR) awardees between 2010 and 2024. The SBIR and STTR are “seed fund” awards coordinated by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and funded through 11 U.S. federal agencies. Of particular interest is whether the number of individual SBA awards, awarded firms, and/or funding amounts are (1) becoming increasingly concentrated within regional innovation hubs and (2) exhibiting a shift toward or away from urban centers and other walkable, transit-accessible urban neighborhoods, particularly since 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. While the rise of remote work and pandemic-related fears may have reduced the desirability of urban spaces for both living and working, there remain significant benefits to spatial agglomeration that may be especially crucial for startups and other small firms in the knowledge- or information-intensive industries. The results suggest that innovative activity of smaller firms has indeed trended toward more centralized, denser, and walkable urban areas in recent years while also remaining fairly concentrated within major metropolitan innovation hubs. The pandemic appears to have resulted in a measurable, though potentially short-lived, cessation of these trends. Full article

We investigate how the factors influencing aircraft utilization have changed during and post-Pandemic depending on the business model before. We classify the Pandemic into three periods (pre-, during and post- Pandemic) and the business models into three types (Total, FSC and LCC). For each group, we analyze the importance of factors using the SHAP and Random Forest models. Through group-difference tests on factor importance, we examine whether there are significant differences across the three periods and business models. According to the findings of the ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and the Kruskal–Wallis assay, the importance of factors influencing aircraft utilization has changed across all business models over the three periods. Pre-Pandemic, a coincident index and a consumer price index were the principal factors. However, the exchange rate (KRW/EUR) gained significant importance during the Pandemic. This suggests that the Pandemic’s impact on the aviation industry was not limited to reduced demand but was also associated with changes in the importance of exchange rates and key business indicators for airline operations. Pre-Pandemic, there were significant differences among the business model groups. However, no meaningful differences were observed during and post-Pandemic. In other words, it seems that the leading indexes were closely interconnected pre-Pandemic, whereas lagging indexes and exchange rate became closely interconnected afterward. A group-difference test confirmed that no differences were observed among the business models, but differences were evident when considering the groups in their entirety. We presented the implications for changes in airline decision-making to understand changes in the aviation industry caused by the Pandemic, by identifying how the factors influencing aircraft utilization were altered. Collaborative business ecosystems (CBEs) are increasingly exposed to disruptive events (e.g., pandemics, supply chain breakdowns, cyberattacks) that challenge organizational adaptability and value creation. Traditional approaches to resilience and robustness often fail to capture the full range of systemic responses. This study introduces a unified mathematical framework to evaluate four crisis response modes—plasticity, resilience, transformative resilience, and antifragility—within complex adaptive networks. Grounded in complex systems and collaborative network theory, our model formalizes both internal organizational capabilities (e.g., adaptability, learning, innovation, structural flexibility) and strategic interventions (e.g., optionality, buffering, information sharing, fault-injection protocols), linking them to pre- and post-crisis performance via dynamic adjustment functions. A composite performance score is defined across four dimensions (Innovation, Contribution, Prestige, and Responsiveness to Business Opportunities), using capability–strategy interaction matrices, weighted performance change functions, and structural transformation modifiers. The sensitivity analysis and scenario simulations enable a comparative evaluation of organizational configurations, strategy impacts, and phase-transition thresholds under crisis. This indicator-based formulation provides a quantitative bridge between resilience theory and practice, facilitating evidence-based crisis management in networked business environments. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally disrupted assumptions about entrepreneurship, career planning, and professional development. This study explored how the pandemic influenced the entrepreneurial intentions of undergraduate business students in the United States. Using a qualitative methodology based on in-depth interviews with 31 students at a public Midwestern university, the research interpreted student narratives through the lenses of effectuation theory, resilience theory, and the theory of planned behavior. Findings revealed that many participants reframed entrepreneurship as a strategy for navigating economic uncertainty and enhancing personal agency. Students reported valuing adaptability, resourcefulness, and opportunity recognition, often experimenting with side hustles during the pandemic as a means of resilience. Their entrepreneurial thinking shifted from purely economic motivations toward aspirations for flexibility, self-fulfillment, and purposeful work. The study highlights the formative role of crisis contexts in shaping entrepreneurial identity among emerging professionals. It suggests that entrepreneurship education should move beyond traditional models, fostering skills for navigating complexity and building resilience. In doing so, the findings contribute to broader conversations about youth entrepreneurship, post-pandemic career development, and the evolving demands of the labor market in times of disruption. As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry is experiencing a surge in demand. While this growth is essential for economic recovery, it also presents significant challenges in terms of sustainability. The tourism industry is under increasing pressure to adopt business practices that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has emerged as a critical framework for addressing these challenges. This study seeks to understand how CSR can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs within the tourism industry, with a focus on identifying the best practices of management. A systematic literature review was conducted to address this research question. A comprehensive search of the literature was performed using Boolean operators in databases including Web of Science, ABI/Inform Collection, Business Source Complete, and Emerald Insight. After applying pre-determined inclusion criteria, the selected studies were analysed using the population/problem, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) framework. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines to ensure the rigor and reliability of the findings. In the context of the globalization process, the interplay between geopolitical dynamics and international trade fluctuations has had significant effects on global economic and business stability. Recent crises, such as the US–China trade war, the invasion of Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted how changes in the structure of international trade can amplify the risks of business failure and reshape global competitiveness. This study aims to analyze in depth the transmission of business failure risk within the global trade network by assessing the sensitivity of industrial sectors in different countries to disruptive/critical/significant events. Through the integration of data from sources such as the World Trade Organization, national customs, and international relations research centers, a quantitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach based on graph theory, random forest, multivariate regression models, and neural networks is developed. This quantitative system makes it possible to identify patterns of risk propagation and to evaluate the degree of vulnerability of each country according to its commercial and financial structure. The mechanisms that relate geopolitical factors, such as trade sanctions and international conflicts, with the oscillations in the global market are analyzed. This study not only contributes to our understanding of how the macroeconomic environment influences business survival, but also provides analytical tools for strategic decision making. By providing an empirical and theoretical framework for early risk identification, it brings a novel perspective to academia and business, facilitating better adaptation to an increasingly volatile and uncertain business environment. Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies for creating or modifying existing business processes and customer experience, leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet changing market needs. Disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic, regional wars, and climate-driven natural disasters create consequential scenarios, e.g., global supply chain disruption creating further demand–supply mismatch for healthcare enterprises. According to KPMG’s 2021 Healthcare CEO Future Pulse, 97% of healthcare leaders reported that COVID-19 significantly accelerated the digital transformation agenda. Successful digital transformation initiatives, for example, digital twins for supply chains, augmented reality, the IoT, and cybersecurity technology initiatives implemented significantly enhanced resiliency in supply chain and manufacturing operations. However, according to another study conducted by Mckinsey & Company, 70% of digital transformation efforts for healthcare enterprises fail to meet their goals. Healthcare enterprises face unique challenges, such as complex regulatory environments, cultural resistance, workforce IT skills, and the need for data interoperability, which make digital transformation a challenging project. Therefore, this study explored potential barriers, enablers, disruption scenarios, and digital transformation use cases for healthcare enterprises. A structured literature review (SLR), followed by thematic content analysis, was conducted to inform the research objectives. A sample of sixty (n = 60) peer-reviewed journal articles were analyzed using research screening criteria and keywords aligned with research objectives. The key themes for digital transformation use cases identified in this study included information processing capability, workforce enablement, operational efficiency, and supply chain resilience. Collaborative leadership as a change agent, collaboration between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT), and effective change management were identified as the key enablers for digital transformation of healthcare enterprises. This study will inform digital transformation leaders, researchers, and healthcare enterprises in the development of enterprise-level proactive strategies, business use cases, and roadmaps for digital transformation. This study investigates how pandemic-induced emotional disruption has reshaped sustainable consumer behavior in the digital age, with a focus on the continued influence of safety measures in the restaurant industry. As societies transition beyond COVID-19 restrictions, health-related anxieties persist, driving consumers to prioritize hygiene and risk reduction in their decision-making. Drawing on large-scale data from TripAdvisor and OpenTable, we analyze the effects of digitally communicated safety protocols on restaurant booking behavior across major U.S. cities. Our findings reveal that safety communication remains a salient factor in consumer choice, even after the acute phase of the pandemic. This effect is particularly pronounced in lower-tier restaurants, where visible digital safety signals help build trust and compensate for weaker brand equity. Conversely, in upscale establishments, where baseline hygiene standards are presumed, the marginal benefit of safety signaling is reduced. The study also identifies enduring patterns of emotional expression and anxiety in online reviews, indicating the long-term psychological imprint of the pandemic on consumer sentiment. By situating safety communication as both a psychological reassurance mechanism and a strategic digital marketing tool, this research contributes to the emerging discourse on sustainable marketing in post-crisis contexts. The results offer theoretical and managerial insights into how businesses can integrate health assurance into long-term brand strategies, reinforcing trust and resilience in digitally mediated, post-pandemic consumption environments. This research analyzes the digital readiness of Latin American countries by assessing the following key factors: digital infrastructure, human capital, internet use, adoption of digital technology by businesses, and digital government services. These factors are critical to the development of digital technology in the region. The analysis identifies countries that are leaders in digital development (Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina), countries with an average level of digital technology development (Peru, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Panama, and the Dominican Republic), and those with slower progress (Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Cuba, and Nicaragua). Based on this assessment, the study proposes and evaluates positive, negative, and neutral scenarios for the future of digital technology in Latin America over the next five years. The study concludes that a neutral scenario is the most likely, suggesting that, while advanced countries will maintain stable growth, lagging countries will experience accelerated, albeit still moderate, digitalization. This has key implications for regional competitiveness and digital inclusion. The study used methods of analysis, synthesis, classification, grouping, statistics, indexing, and scoring. This study uses the most recent data available (2022–2024) to provide an updated and comprehensive assessment of digital transformation in Latin America, reflecting post-pandemic dynamics and emerging digital trends such as AI and fintech growth. This study investigated the social and behavioural impacts of employing a card game designed to support the teaching of business metrics through active peer-to-peer engagement, contrasting with traditional passive lectures. Grounded in Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (SLT), the study used a multiple-methods approach including student feedback, a focus group, and an interview. A novel card game, Metrics Masters©, was played by 390 students across a range of educational levels and settings. The research found that the game effectively introduced and reinforced their understanding of key business metrics, while simultaneously enhancing social interaction, teamwork, and problem-solving among Millennial and Generation Z students. The findings underline the efficacy of game-based learning and its close alignment with the SLT principles of observation, imitation, and social interaction. The theoretical contribution of this paper lies in its explicit application and extension of SLT within the context of business education, illustrating empirically how social interactions facilitated by game-based activities significantly enhance learning outcomes. Furthermore, this paper contributes to educational practice by providing robust evidence that game-based learning methods can effectively address educational challenges heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, offering actionable strategies for educators aiming to foster both academic and social development among students. Agritourism has grown significantly worldwide in recent years, even during the COVID-19 pandemic when faced with various challenges. To understand the reasons behind the rapid growth and be better prepared for future crises, this study interviewed 22 agritourism businesses in Texas (USA) regarding the influence of the pandemic and their adaptation strategies. Results indicated that COVID accentuated the entrepreneurial self-efficacy of agritourism business owners, which is key to their growth during the pandemic while highlighting the resource-dependent nature of agritourism businesses. Despite lacking governmental policy support at all levels, agritourism businesses thrived during the pandemic through their creative adaptations. This study provides valuable implications for sustainable agritourism development. Full article

The end of the pandemic has been officially declared; however, the requirement to ensure hygienic living conditions in tourist accommodations remains a top priority for all hotel establishments and a prerequisite for every customer. Our systematic review studied the level of effectiveness of existing technological means and practices in order to limit COVID-19 infections and to protect customers from other factors aggravating their health, focusing on hotel restaurants. The PRISMA-S method was used. Database research (ABI/INFORM, ProQuest, Scopus EBSCO Business Source Premier, CBCA Business, Pubmed, and Embase) was undertaken between 6/2020 and 4/2024 with keywords comprising “hotels restaurants”, “health and safety”, “effectiveness/efficacy”, “primary analysis”, secondary analysis”, etc. In total, 1110 articles were initially identified, but eventually, 20 papers were selected comprising customer-level questionnaires, systematic reviews, and expert opinions/surveys. Different criteria were used for study assessment according to the type of study. So far, only a very limited number of studies have focused on the effectiveness of different health and safety measures in hotel restaurants. Even though the studies focusing on AI, robotics, and further technological means for enhancing customer satisfaction and the overall level of cleanliness are quite limited, the constant investment of hotels and restaurants in new technologies appears to be a one-way road. The rapid expansion of online grocery shopping has intensified the need for strategically located distribution hubs that ensure efficient and sustainable operations. Traditional location models emphasize economic and logistical factors but often neglect energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This paper proposes a hybrid decision-making model that integrates the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the spherical fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (SFTOPSIS) to address the complexities of delivery hub location selection. The AHP is used to determine the relative importance of key decision-making criteria, including cost, accessibility, infrastructure, competition, and sustainability, while SFTOPSIS ranks the candidate locations based on their proximity to the ideal solution. Spherical fuzzy sets allow for a more nuanced treatment of uncertainty, improving decision-making accuracy in dynamic environments. The results demonstrate that this hybrid approach effectively manages incomplete and uncertain data, delivering a robust ranking of candidate locations. By incorporating sustainability as a key factor, this study provides a structured and adaptive framework for businesses to optimize logistics operations in the post-pandemic landscape.
