Introduction: With the emergence of the expert patient and the expansion of health literacy, the importance of planning and building health technologies aimed at teaching and training health professionals, especially nurses, due to their activities with patients in Primary Health Care, with the aim of meeting the real and constant demands of the expert patient, is evident. Methods: Methodological study with a quantitative approach. The course was constructed based on a scope review, scientific reference, and observational visits during the months of September 2021 and August 2022. For validation, an organized electronic form was used with general information about the research and items of the course constructed for later evaluation by the judges with the three-point Likert scale and with the application of the Delphi Technique between the months of September and October 2022; for the agreement of the judges, the Content Validation Coefficient > 0.8 was considered. Results: Based on the content selected in the scope review, the reference contribution, and the observational visits, the course was constructed. Nine judges participated in the validation stage in Delphi I with a total Content Validation Coefficient above 0.90 and with some suggestions for modifications and improvements pointed out by them. In Delphi II, six judges evaluated the course, resulting in a total Content Validation Coefficient of 0.99. Conclusions: The course developed was considered valid to support the training of Primary Health Care nurses in the formation of the expert patient, with a view to promoting patient autonomy in self-care management, optimizing Primary Health Care, and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. A Preliminary Evaluation of the Use of Solid Residues from the Distillation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants as Fertilizers in Mediterranean Soils

The current study focuses on a preliminary evaluation of the use of solid residues produced from the distillation of selected medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP) as fertilizers for alkaline soils. Specifically, the residues of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), helichrysum (Helichrysum Italicum (Roth) G. Don), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.), oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and sage (Salvia officinalis L.) were added in an alkaline and calcareous soil at the rates of 0 (control), 1, 2, 4 and 8%, in three replications (treatments), and the treated soils were analyzed. The results showed that upon application of the residues, soil electrical conductivity (EC), organic C, total N and the C/N ratio significantly increased, especially at the 4 and 8% rates. The same was found for soil available P, K, B, Cu and Mn. The effects of the residues on soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and available Zn and Fe were rather inconclusive, whereas soil available N significantly decreased, which was somewhat unexpected. From the different application rates tested, it seems that all residues could improve soil fertility (except N?) when they were applied to soil at rates of 2% and above, without exceeding the 8% rate. The reasons for the latter statement are soil EC and available Mn: the doubling of EC upon application of the residues and the excessive increase in soil available Mn in treatments with 8% residues raise concerns of soil salinization and Mn phytotoxicity risks, respectively. This work provides the first step towards the potential agronomic use of solid residues from MAP distillation in alkaline soils. However, for the establishment of such a perspective, further research is needed in respect to the effect of residues on plant growth and soil properties, by means of at least pot experiments. Based on the results of the current study, the undesirable effect of residues on soil available N should be investigated in depth, since N is the most important essential element for plant growth, and possible risks of micronutrient phytotoxicities should also be studied. In addition, application rates between 2 and 4% should be studied extensively in order to recommend optimum application rates of residues to producers. Full article

Superhydrophobic magnetic nanomaterials (SHMNMs) are emerging as multifunctional platforms for efficient oil–water separation due to their combination of extreme water repellency, strong oil affinity, and external magnetic responsiveness. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in the design, synthesis, and environmental application of SHMNMs. The theoretical foundations of superhydrophobicity and the physicochemical behavior of magnetic nanoparticles are first outlined, followed by discussion of their synergistic integration. Key fabrication techniques—such as sol–gel synthesis, electrospinning, dip-coating, laser-assisted processing, and the use of biomass-derived precursors—are critically assessed in terms of their ability to tailor surface morphology, chemical functionality, and long-term durability. The review further explores the mechanisms of oil adsorption, magnetic separation, and material reusability under realistic environmental conditions. Special attention is paid to the scalability, mechanical resilience, and environmental compatibility of SHMNMs in the context of water treatment technologies. Current limitations, including reduced efficiency in harsh media, potential environmental risks, and challenges in material regeneration, are discussed. This work provides a structured overview that could support the rational development of next-generation superhydrophobic materials tailored for sustainable and high-performance separation of oil and organic pollutants from water. (1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Oman, necessitating targeted healthcare planning and patient support. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on MS management and disease course, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19, psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic, and demographic and clinical predictors of the effects related to COVID-19 among Omani PwMS. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021. Adult (18–60 years) Omani PwMS completed a structured interview along with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and World Health Organization Well-being Index (WHO-5). Clinical data on relapses and disease-modifying therapies and adherence were analyzed. The data was statistically analyzed. (3) Results: Of 104 PwMS (73.1% female), 22.1% contracted COVID-19, with fatigue being the most reported symptom (87%). Female sex (p = 0.042), younger age (18–34 vs. 35–45 years; p = 0.014), diagnosis of COVID-19 (p = 0.037), and low current mental well-being scores (p = 0.021) predicted greater COVID-19-related effects. (4) Conclusion: These findings highlight the need to study the mental resilience of this subgroup of PwMS and provide them with targeted support during crises. Full article

Deer tick virus (DTV) is a Tick-Borne Orthoflavivirus endemic to the United States, transmitted to humans through bites from the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis, which is also the primary vector of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., the causative agent of Lyme disease. Human infection with DTV can result in acute febrile illness followed by central nervous system complications, such as encephalitis and meningoencephalitis. Currently, there are mouse models established for investigating the pathogenesis and clinical outcomes of DTV that mimic human infections, but the strains of mice utilized are refractory to infection with B. burgdorferi s.l. Here, we describe the pathogenesis and clinical outcomes of DTV infection in C3H/HeJ mice. Neurological clinical signs, mortality, and weight loss were observed in all DTV-infected mice during the investigation. Infected animals demonstrated consistent viral infection in their organs. Additionally, neuropathology of brain sections indicated the presence of meningoencephalitis throughout the brain. This data, along with the clinical outcomes for the mice, indicates successful infection and showcases the neuroinvasive nature of the virus. This is the first study to identify C3H/HeJ mice as an appropriate model for DTV infection. As C3H/HeJ mice are already an established model for B. burgdorferi s.l. infection, this model could serve as an ideal system for investigating disease progression and pathogenesis of co-infections. The precipitation of minerals, in particular carbonates, is a widespread phenomenon in all ecosystems, where it assumes a high relevance both from a geological and biogeochemical standpoint. Most carbonate rocks are of biological origin and made in an aquatic environment. In particular, bioprecipitation of carbonates is believed to have started in the Mesoproterozoic Era, thanks to a process often driven by photosynthetic microorganisms. Nevertheless, an important contribution to carbonate precipitation is also due to the metabolic activity of heterotrophic bacteria, which is not restricted to specific taxonomic groups or to specific environments, making this process a ubiquitous phenomenon. In this framework, the relationship between carbonatogenic microorganisms and other living organisms assumes a particular interest. This study aims to isolate and identify the culturable heterotrophic bacterial component associated with the coenosarc of Corallium rubrum in order to evaluate the occurrence of strains able to precipitate carbonates. In particular, the study was focused on the identification and characterisation of bacterial strains isolated from a coral coenosarc showing a high carbonatogenic capacity under laboratory conditions. Samples of C. rubrum were taken in the coastal waters of three Italian regions. The concentration of the aerobic heterotrophic microflora colonising C. rubrum coenosarc samples spanned from 3 to 6∙106 CFU/cm2. This variation in microbial populations colonising the C. rubrum coenosarc, spanning over 6 orders of magnitude, is not mirrored by a corresponding variability in the colony morphotypes recorded, with the mean being 5.1 (±2.1 sd). Among these bacteria, the carbonatogenic predominant species was Staphylococcus equorum (93% of the isolates), whereas Staphylococcus xylosus and Shewanella sp. accounted only for 3% of isolates each. All these strains showed a remarkable capacity of precipitating calcium carbonate, in the form of calcite crystals organised radially as well crystalised spherulites (S. equorum) or coalescing spherulites (Shewanella sp.). S. xylosus only produced amorphous precipitates of calcium carbonate. All bacterial strains identified were positive both for the production of urease and carbon anhydrase in vitro at 30 °C. It seems that they potentially possess the major biochemical abilities conducive to Ca2+ precipitation, as they showed in vitro. In addition, all our carbonatogenic isolates were able to hydrolyse the phytic acid calcium salt and then were potentially able to induce precipitation of calcium phosphates also through such a mechanism. Microorganisms, as abundant biological resources, offer significant potential in the development of selenium-enrichment technologies. Selenium-enriched microorganisms not only absorb, reduce, and accumulate selenium efficiently but also produce various selenium compounds without relying on synthetic chemical processes. In particular, nano-selenium produced by these microorganisms during cultivation has garnered attention due to its unique physicochemical properties and biological activity, making it a promising raw material for functional foods and pharmaceutical products. This paper reviews selenium-enriched microorganisms, focusing on their classification, selenium metabolism, and transformation mechanisms. It explores how selenium is absorbed, reduced, and transformed within microbial cells, analyzing the biochemical processes by which inorganic selenium is converted into organic and nano-selenium forms. Finally, the broad applications of selenium-enriched microbial products in food, medicine, and agriculture are explored, including their roles in selenium-rich foods, nano-selenium materials, and disease prevention and treatment. Glucosinolates are secondary metabolites of the Brassicales, playing a role in plant protection and as health-promoting compounds. Here, Na2SO4 was used to modulate the aliphatic glucosinolate content in different organs of Eruca sativa Mill. In flowers, which accumulate the highest amount of glucosinolates, Na2SO4 increased the concentration of glucoraphanin, in roots of glucoerucin and in apical leaves it doubled the amount of dimeric 4-mercaptobutyl glucosinolate. The biosynthetic gene Branched-Chain Aminotransferase 4 was also induced in roots at the highest salt concentration, while in leaves all tested genes biosynthetic genes were downregulated or unaffected. Cytochromes P450 83A1 monooxygenase was downregulated at the highest salt concentration in all organs. Overall, E. sativa is a reliable source of glucosinolates, which can be modulated with Na2SO4. This study investigated the impacts of land-use history and an episodic flood event on the soil quality of a riverine floodplain ecosystem, providing long-term and short-term disturbance perspectives. The study took place in the Saint Michael’s College Natural Area, which has over a hundred-year history of land-use change. Based on aerial orthoimagery, three zones (a recently abandoned farm field, a new-growth forest, and an old-growth forest) were selected that reflected different land-use histories. Two plots were selected per zone and pooled soil samples were collected from each before and after a major flooding event. Surface soil quality before flooding was often similar among the new- and old-growth forested areas (1.4 mg-P/g-soil, 6.8% soil organic matter (SOM), 0.79 humification index (HIX), and 13% Peak T) but differed from that found in the recently abandoned farm field, which had higher phosphorus levels (1.6 mg-P/g-soil), lower SOM content (3.9%), more microbial-like SOM (0.65 HIX and 17% Peak T), and drier soils. Flooding caused SOM to better resemble that of a forest rather than an agricultural field, and it lowered phosphorus levels. The results of our study suggest that episodic flooding events could help accelerate the restoration of soil organic matter conditions. Full article

Agroecosystem Modeling and Sustainable Optimization: An Empirical Study Based on XGBoost and EEBS Model

As agricultural land continues to expand, the conversion of forests to farmland has intensified, significantly altering the structure and function of agroecosystems. However, the dynamic ecological responses and their interactions with economic outcomes remain insufficiently modeled. This study proposes an integrated framework that combines a dynamic food web model with the Eco-Economic Benefit and Sustainability (EEBS) model, utilizing empirical data from Brazil and Ghana. A system of ordinary differential equations solved using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method was employed to simulate species interactions and energy flows under various land management strategies. Reintroducing key species (e.g., the seven-spot ladybird and ragweed) improved ecosystem stability to over 90%, with soil fertility recovery reaching 95%. In herbicide-free scenarios, introducing natural predators such as bats and birds mitigated disturbances and promoted ecological balance. Using XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting) to analyze 200-day community dynamics, pest control, resource allocation, and chemical disturbance were identified as dominant drivers. EEBS-based multi-scenario optimization revealed that organic farming achieves the highest alignment between ecological restoration and economic benefits. The model demonstrated strong predictive power (R2 = 0.9619, RMSE = 0.0330), offering a quantitative basis for green agricultural transitions and sustainable agroecosystem management. Full article

This study presents CLIP-BCA-Gated, a dynamic multimodal framework that integrates bidirectional cross-attention (Bi-Cross-Attention) and adaptive gating within the CLIP architecture to address these challenges. The Bi-Cross-Attention module enables fine-grained cross-modal semantic alignment, while the adaptive gating mechanism dynamically weights modalities to suppress noise. Hierarchical learning rate scheduling and multidimensional data augmentation further optimize feature fusion for real-time multiclass classification. On the CrisisMMD benchmark, CLIP-BCA-Gated achieves 91.77% classification accuracy (1.55% higher than baseline CLIP and 2.33% over state-of-the-art ALIGN), with exceptional recall for critical categories: infrastructure damage (93.42%) and rescue efforts (92.15%). The model processes tweets at 0.083 s per instance, meeting real-time deployment requirements for emergency response systems. Ablation studies show Bi-Cross-Attention contributes 2.54% accuracy improvement, and adaptive gating contributes 1.12%. This work demonstrates that dynamic multimodal fusion enhances resilience to noisy social media data, directly supporting SDG 11 through scalable real-time disaster information triage. The framework’s noise-robust design and sub-second inference make it a practical solution for humanitarian organizations requiring rapid crisis categorization. Full article

Infrastructure as code (IaC) is essential for modern cloud development, enabling teams to define, deploy, and manage infrastructure in a consistent and repeatable manner. As organizations migrate to Azure, selecting the right approach is crucial for managing complexity, minimizing errors, and supporting DevOps practices. This paper examines the use of Azure Bicep with GitHub Actions to automate infrastructure deployment for an application in the Azure cloud. It explains how Bicep improves readability, modularity, and integration compared to traditional ARM templates and other automation tools. The solution utilizes a modular Bicep design to deploy resources, including virtual networks, managed identities, container apps, databases, and AI services, with environment-specific parameters for development, QA, and production. GitHub Actions workflows automate the building, deployment, and tearing down of infrastructure, ensuring consistent deployments across environments. Security considerations include managed identities, private networking, and secret management in continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines. This paper provides a detailed architectural overview, workflow analysis, and implementation guidance to help teams adopt a robust, automated approach to Azure infrastructure deployment. By leveraging automation tooling and modern DevOps practices, organizations can streamline delivery and maintain secure, maintainable cloud environments. Full article

This study investigates the Enzyme Biofilm Method (EBM), a biological wastewater treatment technology previously developed by the authors. EBM employs microbial-derived hydrolytic enzyme groups in the initial treatment stage to break down high-molecular-weight organic matter—such as starch, proteins, and fats—into low-molecular-weight compounds. These compounds enhance the growth of native microorganisms, promoting biofilm formation on carriers and improving treatment efficiency. Over the past decade, EBM has been practically applied in food factory wastewater facilities handling high organic loads. The enzyme groups used in EBM are derived from cultures of Bacillus mojavensis, Saccharomyces cariocanus, and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. To clarify the system’s mechanism and ensure its practical viability, this study focused on starch—a prevalent and recalcitrant component of food wastewater—using two evaluation approaches. Verification 1: Field testing at a starch factory showed that adding enzyme groups to the equalization tank effectively reduced biological oxygen demand (BOD) through starch degradation. Verification 2: Laboratory experiments confirmed that the enzyme groups possess both amylase and maltase activities, sequentially breaking down starch into glucose. The resulting glucose supports microbial growth, facilitating biofilm formation and BOD reduction. These findings confirm EBM’s potential as a sustainable and effective solution for treating high-strength food industry wastewater. Full article

Enhancing forage protein is key to sustainable ruminant nutrition. The nutritive value of Hedysarum coronarium L. was investigated by studying different preservation systems (fresh vs. dehydrated pellet vs. hay) (Exp. 1) and morphological fractions (flowers vs. leaves vs. stems) (Exp. 2). For the fresh and pelleted systems, two cuts were used. Proximately, total polyphenols and condensed tannins were detected. In vitro fermentation characteristics were studied by incubating samples with buffered sheep rumen fluid, estimating methane production by volatile fatty acids. Fresh and pelleted sulla were more nutritionally advantageous than hay, in terms of metabolizable energy and protein-to-fiber ratio. Pelleting at the beginning of flowering proved to be a suitable forage for sheep feeding due to protein (15.1% DM), metabolizable energy (9.64 MJ/kg DM), structural carbohydrates (39.5% DM), and total polyphenols (13.5 GAE g/kg DM) content. This cut showed an in vitro fermentation rate (9.86 mL/h), organic matter degradability (55.7%), and volatile fatty acids (87.3 mmoL/g) that were higher (p < 0.05) than hay. Flowers and leaves showed higher (p < 0.05) levels of secondary metabolites than stems as well as lower methane production. These results suggest the potential influence of these compounds in reducing rumen emissions. Dehydration and pelleting resulted in an effective preservation method for maintaining nutrients in sulla forage. Full article

Assessing Hydropower Impacts on Flood and Drought Hazards in the Lancang–Mekong River Using CNN-LSTM Machine Learning

The efficient and rational development of hydropower in the Lancang–Mekong River Basin can promote green energy transition, reduce carbon emissions, prevent and mitigate flood and drought disasters, and ensure the sustainable development of the entire basin. In this study, based on publicly available hydrometeorological observation data and satellite remote sensing monitoring data from 2001 to 2020, a machine learning model of the Lancang–Mekong Basin was developed to reconstruct the basin’s hydrological processes, and identify the occurrence patterns and influencing mechanisms of water-related hazards. The results show that, against the background of climate change, the Lancang–Mekong Basin is affected by the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events. In particular, Rx1day, Rx5day, R10mm, and R95p (extreme precipitation indicators determined by the World Meteorological Organization’s Expert Group on Climate Change Monitoring and Extreme Climate Events) in the northwestern part of the Mekong River Basin show upward trends, with the average maximum daily rainfall increasing by 1.8 mm/year and the total extreme precipitation increasing by 18 mm/year on average. The risks of flood and drought disasters will continue to rise. The flood peak period is mainly concentrated in August and September, with the annual maximum flood peak ranging from 5600 to 8500 m3/s. The Stung Treng Station exhibits longer drought duration, greater severity, and higher peak intensity than the Chiang Saen and Pakse Stations. At the Pakse Station, climate change and hydropower development have altered the non-drought proportion by −12.50% and +15.90%, respectively. For the Chiang Saen Station, the fragmentation degree of the drought index time series under the baseline, naturalized, and hydropower development scenarios is 0.901, 1.16, and 0.775, respectively. These results indicate that hydropower development has effectively reduced the frequency of rapid drought–flood transitions within the basin, thereby alleviating pressure on drought management efforts. The regulatory role of the cascade reservoirs in the Lancang River can mitigate risks posed by climate change, weaken adverse effects, reduce flood peak flows, alleviate hydrological droughts in the dry season, and decrease flash drought–flood transitions in the basin. The research findings can enable basin managers to proactively address climate change, develop science-based technical pathways for hydropower dispatch, and formulate adaptive disaster prevention and mitigation strategies.
