Background: Ambient yoghurt, also known as room-temperature yoghurt, has gained increasing attention due to its convenience in distribution and consumption without needing cold storage. To ensure extended shelf life, ambient yoghurt normally undergoes an additional heat treatment during manufacturing, the post-fermentation sterilisation process (typically at 65–85 °C), which may induce the formation of fine particle aggregates and result in undesirable textural attributes, particularly graininess. Assessing textural attributes of such products remains a challenge. Methods: By mimicking the oral behaviour of ambient yoghurt, this study uses rheological as well as tribological techniques for objective assessment of the textural sensations of slipperiness and graininess. Various experimental conditions, including the amount of saliva incorporation, sliding speed, and ball-contact and plate-contact lubrication, were examined, and results were analysed against perceived texture by panellists. Main findings: The results indicate that viscosity changes are closely associated with perceived slipperiness under the tested conditions. The friction coefficient obtained from a plate-contact tribometer shows a positive correlation with the sensation of graininess (Pearson’s r was 0.74, p < 0.05, N = 8). It was also observed that a 20% saliva incorporation showed the closest agreement with sensory perception, although this observation should be interpreted cautiously due to the limited sample size. Implications: Results obtained from this work indicate the feasibility of using rheology and tribology techniques for texture prediction in ambient yoghurt. The findings are exploratory in nature, and further studies with larger sample sets are required to validate the proposed approach. The methodology presented here may serve as a reference framework for investigating texture perception in other dairy systems. Full article

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) experience a high burden of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related diseases, yet data on HPV vaccination among this group in Brazil remain limited. Aims: The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of complete HPV vaccination and to identify factors associated with vaccination completion among MSM using PrEP in Brazil. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey between May and September 2025 among MSM aged ≥18 years, residing in Brazil and currently using oral PrEP. Participants were recruited through virtual snowball sampling and targeted advertisements on social media and a gay geosocial networking application. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire hosted on REDCap®. Complete HPV vaccination was defined as self-reported receipt of all doses recommended according to the participant’s age and clinical condition. Sociodemographic characteristics, relationship patterns, sexual behaviors, lubricant use during sexual activity, and history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were assessed. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using Poisson regression with robust (sandwich) variance. Results: A total of 872 MSM using PrEP were included, of whom 59.4% reported complete HPV vaccination. In adjusted analyses, complete vaccination was more frequent among participants reporting both steady and casual partners (aPR = 1.90; 95% CI: 1.36–2.65) or only casual partners (aPR = 1.72; 95% CI: 1.24–2.39), those reporting lubricant use during sexual activity (aPR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.23–1.61), and those with a diagnosis of chlamydia and/or gonorrhea in the previous 12 months (aPR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.08–1.36). Conclusions: Although HPV vaccination coverage among MSM using PrEP in Brazil is higher than that reported for MSM in general, it remains incomplete in a population with regular contact with specialized health services. Integrating systematic assessment and delivery of HPV vaccination into PrEP care may help increase vaccination completion and reduce missed opportunities for prevention. Full article

Dry eye disease is a common condition in which tear production or quality is insufficient to lubricate the eyes properly. Standard treatment usually involves lubricating eye drops. In this study, we assessed the human health risks, including both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects, associated with long-term exposure to the chemical elements arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in eye drops used in Brazil. The results indicated that the Co concentration (1.1048 mg/kg) in the eye drops sample 5 exceeded the limit established by the ICH Q3D (R2) guideline for parenteral products (0.5000 mg/kg). Additionally, As levels in eye drop samples 2, 8–10, 12, 13, and 16, as well as Cd levels in samples 2, 3, 8–10, and 12, exceeded the limits established by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia for parenteral administration (0.0500–0.0532 mg/kg). The main health risk appears to come from oral exposure, as the drug can drain into the nasal cavity via the nasolacrimal duct and then be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. While none of the tested eye drops posed non-carcinogenic risks, carcinogenic risks from oral exposure to As and Cd were identified, with overall risk levels exceeding acceptable thresholds. These findings emphasize the need for strict regulation and continuous monitoring of these products to reduce health risks and prevent long-term damage. Full article

Dental composites are widely used in restorative dentistry; however, their long-term clinical performance is strongly influenced by mechanical and tribological behavior under oral conditions. Understanding the relationship between material structure, surface characteristics, and functional properties is therefore essential. This preliminary methodological study evaluated the mechanical, tribological, and wetting properties of three light-cured dental composites—Enamel Plus HRi, Amaris, and Estelite Asteria—commonly used in clinical practice. The materials were characterized in terms of surface morphology, hardness, Young’s modulus, coefficient of friction, and wear resistance under controlled laboratory conditions. Instrumental indentation and tribological tests were performed, and results were expressed as mean values with standard deviations calculated from multiple measurements. The results demonstrated that filler composition and surface topography affected material performance. Estelite Asteria exhibited the highest hardness (HIT > 300 MPa), while Enamel Plus HRi showed the highest Young’s modulus (EIT ≈ 14.5 GPa). Materials with more complex surface morphology retained lubricating artificial saliva more effectively, resulting in lower friction coefficients (minimum µ = 0.85), although this did not reduce wear. The highest wear was observed for Estelite Asteria, with a wear scar approximately 62% greater than that of Enamel Plus HRi. These preliminary findings provide a methodological basis for further investigations under more clinically relevant conditions. Full article

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester form DHEAS, are multifunctional steroid hormones primarily produced in the adrenal cortex, with additional synthesis in peripheral tissues. DHEA/DHEAS serve as precursors to sex steroids and exhibit neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating effects. DHEA levels decline significantly with age, a phenomenon termed “adrenopause”, prompting interest in supplementation to mitigate age-related symptoms. Particularly in postmenopausal women, DHEA has shown potential benefits in treating genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), including improved vaginal health, lubrication, and sexual function. While intravaginal DHEA appears effective and safer than systemic estrogen therapy, especially for women with estrogen sensitivity, results remain mixed for oral administration. DHEA and DHEAS exhibit diverse neuroactive properties through modulation of GABA-A, NMDA, and sigma-1 receptors. These neurosteroids contribute to neuroprotection, synaptic plasticity, and mood regulation. Altered DHEA/DHEAS levels have been implicated in neurodegenerative disorders and depression, with emerging evidence supporting their potential therapeutic value. In addition, DHEA plays a multifaceted role in aging-related physiological changes. It supports muscle anabolism, bone density maintenance, cardiovascular protection, and immune regulation. Though supplementation shows potential benefits, especially in conjunction with resistance training, results remain discrepant. Current evidence has revealed that the therapeutic effects of DHEA supplementation are inconsistent in different human systems among different studies. The diversity of results is mainly due to heterogeneous receptor distribution, various action pathways, and distinct tissue responses in different systems. Further research is needed to define its efficacy and dosage across various systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Although technology has progressed and novel dosage forms have been developed, tablets are still the most used form of medication. However, the present manufacturing methods of these oral solid dosage forms offer limited capacity for personalized treatment and adaptable dosing. Personalized therapy, with a few exceptions, is not yet a part of routine clinical practice. Drug printing could be a possible approach to increase the use of personalized therapy. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of surface tension and the viscosity of inks in the formation of the printing pattern and to investigate how the porosity of substrate tablets influences the behavior of inks on the surface. Methods: Spray-dried mannitol served as a binder and filler, while magnesium stearate functioned as a lubricant in the preparation of substrate tablets. Brilliant Blue dye was a model “drug”. The ink formulation was applied to the substrates in three varying quantities. Results: Increasing the viscosity enhanced the drug content, potentially improving printing speed and pattern accuracy. However, it negatively impacted the dosing accuracy due to nozzle clogging and prolonged drying time. Viscosity had a significantly higher impact on the ink behavior than surface tension. Lowering the surface tension improved the dosing accuracy and reduced the drying time but resulted in smaller drop sizes and decreases in pattern accuracy. Reducing the substrate porosity led to longer drying times and diminished pattern accuracy. Conclusions: A target surface tension of around 30 mN/m is suggested for inkjet printing. It is necessary to further investigate the applicability of the technology with solutions of inks with high viscosity and low surface tension, including the API. Full article

Xerostomia significantly compromises oral comfort, mucosal integrity, and denture retention. While topical therapies such as oral gels are commonly used to manage symptoms, their effectiveness remains limited due to an inability to replicate the complex biochemical and mechanical functions of natural saliva. This review explores the pathophysiology of salivary dysfunction, the structural and functional roles of mucins, and the tribological and rheological demands of the oral environment—particularly in denture wearers. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between mucosal surfaces, salivary films, and prosthetic biomaterials, as well as the importance of mucoadhesion and aqueous boundary lubrication. A rheological comparison of commercially available oral gels and whole human saliva (WHS) reveals that gels are significantly more viscous and elastic, yet fail to mimic the dynamic responsiveness of saliva. Current formulations lack functional standardization and labeling, limiting clinical guidance. The study proposes design principles for next-generation gels that incorporate amphiphilic, biomimetic components and measurable performance benchmarks. Full article

Background/Objectives: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial condition with complex pathophysiology involving tear film instability, ocular surface inflammation, and nerve dysfunction. This review summarizes current evidence on the different available therapies targeting these mechanisms. Methods: A review of clinical studies evaluating treatment outcomes for therapies targeting aqueous tear deficiency, Meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular surface inflammation, and ocular pain was conducted, with an emphasis on randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses where available. Results: Artificial tears provide symptomatic relief with limited impact on tear film stability. Punctal plugs improve tear retention but show variable efficacy across studies. Treatments targeting MGD—such as lipid-based lubricants, eyelid hygiene, thermal pulsation (LipiFlow, iLux), and intense pulsed light (IPL)—demonstrate improvements in gland function, though outcomes vary. Anti-inflammatory agents including cyclosporine, lifitegrast, and short-term corticosteroids improve ocular surface signs, with mixed symptom relief. Biologic therapies like autologous serum tears and platelet-rich plasma show promise for both signs and symptoms, but data remain inconsistent. Nerve-targeted therapies, including oral neuromodulators (gabapentin, antidepressants), botulinum toxin, and transcutaneous nerve stimulation, have shown potential for managing neuropathic ocular pain, although randomized data are limited. Overall, variability in study designs, patient populations, and outcome measures highlights the need for more rigorous research. Conclusions: Personalized, mechanism-based treatment strategies are essential for optimizing outcomes in DED. Future research should prioritize well-designed, controlled studies to clarify the role of emerging therapies and guide the individualized management of this heterogeneous condition. Full article

Hyaluronic acid (or hyaluronan) is a polysaccharide with therapeutic applications in dentistry due to its lubricating, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. This study evaluates the diffusion, conductivity, and viscosity of the sodium salt of HyH (that is, NaHy) with different molecular weights (124 kDa, 245 kDa, and 1800 kDa) in artificial saliva at pH 2.3, 4, 5, 6.8, and 8. Using the Taylor dispersion technique at 298.15 K, diffusion coefficients were determined and analyzed based on Fick’s second law equation. Results showed that NaHy diffusion was higher at acidic pH, particularly at pH 2.3, and decreased at pH 8, likely due to structural compaction in acidic conditions and expansion in alkaline media. The higher molecular weight of this polysaccharide exhibited greater diffusion and conductivity, suggesting an extended conformation that enhances mobility. These findings indicate that both pH and molecular weight significantly influence NaHy transport properties. Optimizing these parameters may enhance HA’s bioavailability and effectiveness in topical oral applications, improving its therapeutic potential in treating periodontal and oral conditions. Background/Objectives: This study aims to develop a solid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) to enhance the solubility and oral bioavailability of cannabidiol (CBD). Methods: According to the solubility of CBD and pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of the different ingredients, an oil (medium-chain triglyceride, MCT), mixed surfactants (Labrasol, Tween 80), and a co-surfactant (Transcutol) were selected for the SNEDDS. CBD-loaded SNEDDS formulations were prepared and characterized. The optimal SNEDDS was converted into solid SNEDDS powders via solid carrier adsorption and spray drying techniques. Various evaluations including flowability, drug release, self-emulsifying capacity, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), morphology, and pharmacokinetic characteristics were conducted. Subsequently, the solid powders with fillers, disintegrants, and lubricants were added to the capsules for accelerated stability testing. Results: The investigations showed that the two S-SNEDDS formulations improved the CBD’s solubility and in vitro drug release, with good storage stability. The pharmacokinetic data of Sprague Dawley rats indicated that a single oral dose of L-SNEDDS and spray drying SNEDDS led to a quicker absorption and a higher Cmax of CBD compared to the two oil-based controls (CBD-sesame oil (similar to Epidiolex®) and CBD-MCT), which is favorable for the application of CBD products. Conclusions: SNEDDS is a prospective strategy for enhancing the solubility and oral bioavailability of CBD, and solid SNEDDS offers flexibility for developing more CBD-loaded solid formulations. Moreover, SNEDDS provides new concepts and methods for other poorly water-soluble drugs. Full article

This study investigates the oral processing characteristics and application of soybean fiber and sodium alginate microgel in enhancing the texture and sensory attributes of low-fat yogurt. By combining soybean fiber with sodium alginate, a stable composite microgel system was developed with a uniform particle-size distribution. Oral lubrication performance was assessed by evaluating particle size, texture, friction coefficient and rheological properties, providing insights into how microgels improve food lubricity. The results showed that adding soybean fiber/sodium alginate microgel to low-fat yogurt significantly enhanced lubrication, texture and sensory quality compared to standard low-fat yogurt. The yogurt sample containing 2 wt% microgel achieved optimal sensory results, improving hardness and adhesiveness. This study suggests that soybean fiber/sodium alginate microgel offer a promising strategy for enhancing the sensory quality in low-fat dairy products, supporting healthier food innovations. Abstract
Background: Despite incidence rates and complications, the clinical management of xerostomia lacks guidelines. Aim: The aim of this overview is to summarize the clinical experience over the past 10 years of treating xerostomia using non-pharmacological interventions. Background: Despite incidence rates and complications, the clinical management of xerostomia lacks guidelines. Aim: The aim of this overview is to summarize the clinical experience over the past 10 years of treating xerostomia using non-pharmacological interventions. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 1 January 2013 to 30 January 2023. Results: Topical therapies are the mainstays in cases of longstanding oral dryness. Their aim is to relieve oral discomfort by retaining mouth moisture. Macro-molecular lubricants were largely used in xerostomia due to radiotherapy for Head and Neck cancer (HNC) and xerostomia due to the chronic use of drugs. However, none of them provided stable relief for dry mouth. Traditional Medicine (TM), through the administration of different medicinal herbs and plants, has recently been evaluated against xerostomia in clinical trials. Matricaria chamomilla L., Linum usitatissimum, and Malva sylvestris L. together with Althea digitata Boiss, Licorice root, and Salvia Officinalis are among the most used compounds. They were formulated as water extracts with health benefits that are attributed to the presence of polyphenols. However, the low number of clinical evaluations represents the greatest limitation for validating the efficacy of TM against xerostomia. Regarding acupuncture, it did not show significant effects in the trials in comparison to the control groups. Further, electrostimulation, photo-biomodulation and hyperbaric therapy need more randomized clinical evaluations to effectively demonstrate their ability to relieve dry mouth. Conclusions: No topical treatment has shown stable relief of xerostomia. Consequently, the management of xerostomia and its devastating complications remain a significant void in daily clinical practice. Full article

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is a Cyprinid fish of aquacultural and research importance. The buccal cavity represents the gateway of the digestive tract. The present study investigated the adaptational changes involving various components of the buccal cavity of fingerling (three months posthatching, mph), yearling (12 mph), and adult (48 mph) C. idella using scanning electron microscopy, histology, and morphometry. The upper and lower lips appeared uninterrupted at the three studied stages and were limited caudally by the upper and lower jaws. The jaw epithelium was the thickest part of the buccal epithelium; ultrastructurally, it appeared smooth with ridge-like borders in fingerlings that transformed into microgrooves in yearlings. In adult C. idella, the jaw mucosa was organized into dome-shaped masses separated from each other by tight furrows. Each mass was formed from several keratinocytes with corrugated surfaces that featured numerous microdepressions. Except for the jaws, taste buds, mainly of type I, and acidic and neutral goblet cells were observed throughout the mucosa of the buccal cavity, and their densities were highest along the mucosal folds of the palate and oral floor, suggesting a principal role for these parts in both gustation and food lubrication. This study is the first to report age-associated spatiotemporal changes in the buccal cavity of grass carp and will serve as a fundamental reference during the interpretation of various types of oral pathologies in teleost. Oral rehabilitation with dental implants has resulted in high success rates. However, some complications have been described, such as the loss of the prosthetic screw. Some manufacturers sell screws with different coatings to avoid screw loosening, but even these types of screws can come loose. We aimed to investigate the screw coatings that can be applied during a dental appointment to avoid screw loosening. Following PRISMA Guidelines, we searched PubMed/Medline, Embase and Web of Science for studies published up to January 2024. All studies of single dental implant crowns, in which the prosthetic screw was coated with a lubricant and the preload and/or the removal torque value (RTV) was recorded, were analyzed. We excluded studies applying the finite element method (FEM) as well as studies without a control group. The risk of bias was assessed with a tool developed by our research group. Of the 1959 records identified, 19 were selected. Ten studies were considered to have a low risk of bias, and nine were considered to have a medium risk of bias. The coatings tested were adhesives, saliva, chlorhexidine, Vaseline, silicone gel, Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape, blood, fluoride, Listerine® Mouthwash and normal saline. The preload, the RTV with and without cyclic loading and the percentage of RTV loss were recorded. Some coatings show promise, although there is no clear evidence that any option is superior in minimizing screw loosening. Full article

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition in which insufficient or ineffective saliva does not provide sufficient oral lubrication. The severity of this condition can vary from a mild discomfort to a debilitating condition that greatly impairs patients’ lives. Xerostomia arises as a side effect of various medications, diseases, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or nerve damage. Various aqueous dispersions of macromolecules have been proposed to assist or replace the saliva in these patients. It is vital that these macromolecules have ample lubricity and water retention properties while showing long-lasting efficacy. The emphasis of this review is to provide a general overview on lubricating macromolecules that have been clinically used or reported in the literature as potential replacements for saliva. These include various natural or synthetic polymers, proteins, peptides, and lipids that are used in the form of solutions, gels, emulsions, and colloids. Perspectives into the future of macromolecular oral lubricants in the treatment of xerostomia are also provided. Full article
