Scarab beetles depend on gut microbes for digestive enzymes. Some species’ microbiomes show taxonomic conservation regardless of diet, while others have conserved functional profiles. We compared the hindgut microbiomes of two Cetoniinae beetle larvae: the obligately saproxylophagous Mecynorrhinella poggei and the omnivorous/predatory Goliathus goliatus, which requires protein supplementation when reared artificially. Two diets with and without supplementation were used. If diet drives the microbiome, then gut microbes in protein-supplemented hosts should produce fewer lignocellulolytic enzymes and more proteinases regardless of species. If microbiome composition is conserved within a species, then Mecynorrhinella is expected to have more lignocellulolytic microbes while Goliathus should have more proteinolytic microbes regardless of diet. In this study, low-protein diets reduced G. goliatus growth, but gut microbiome composition and predicted function remained largely stable, dominated by Bacteroidales including Dysgonomonas, Proteiniphilum, and Alistipes. Mecynorrhinella’s gut microbiome showed some reduced Proteiniphilum and increased Dysgonomonas relative abundance, but otherwise the microbiome composition was statistically stable with no effect of diet on growth or predicted microbiome function. These results highlight that microbiomes of closely related insects can markedly differ even if diet does not and that microbiome functional conservation tied to host physiology may occur even if greater plasticity could theoretically reduce malnutrition. Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan transmitted by environmentally persistent oocysts and by tissue cysts in infected prey or meat. Although wild cervids and wild canids are increasingly used as wildlife sentinels, their complementary ecological roles in integrated T. gondii surveillance have not been comprehensively synthesized. This structured narrative review compares infection evidence in five wild cervid species and three wild canid species to examine how feeding ecology shapes exposure and to assess their complementary value in wildlife surveillance. Peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2026 was retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Studies reporting evidence of T. gondii exposure or infection in wild cervids or wild canids were included, with serological evidence evaluated separately from molecular or histological detection. Cervids showed geographically variable exposure consistent with ingestion of oocysts from contaminated vegetation, soil, and water, supporting their use as sentinels of environmental contamination. Wild canids often showed higher reported seropositivity, although direct comparisons were limited by assay, sampling, and demographic heterogeneity. Their predatory, scavenging, and omnivorous diets allow access to both environmental oocysts and tissue cysts. Cervids and canids should therefore be treated as complementary rather than interchangeable indicators: cervids primarily reflect environmental exposure, whereas canids integrate environmental and trophic transmission. This review provides an ecological framework to support integrated One Health wildlife surveillance by combining environmental and trophic indicators for improved risk assessment and food-safety planning. Vegan and vegetarian dietary patterns have moved from minority dietary choices to central elements of contemporary nutritional guidance, supported by observational cohorts, short-term randomised trials, and umbrella-level evidence (i.e., syntheses of multiple systematic reviews) reporting favourable associations with body weight, blood lipids, blood pressure, glycaemic control, and inflammatory markers. Recent direct comparisons against healthy omnivorous comparators—including the OMNIVEG controlled crossover transitioning from a traditional to a vegan Mediterranean diet and the Landry identical-twin trial—indicate that well-formulated plant-based patterns can produce additional short-term improvements in selected cardiometabolic markers even when the comparator is not the modern Western diet. Interpretation of the broader evidence base is nonetheless constrained by comparator quality, residual confounding, exposure misclassification, reliance on intermediate biomarkers, and limited follow-up. This critical narrative review integrates clinical, methodological, nutritional, and physiological evidence to compare vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous dietary patterns, and argues that the dominant explanatory axis of long-term outcomes is dietary pattern quality—minimally processed plant-rich composition, nutrient adequacy, low ultra-processed food intake, and adherence—rather than the binary inclusion or exclusion of animal-source foods. Well-planned vegan and vegetarian patterns are valid dietary expressions that require systematic attention to vitamin B12, iodine, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, EPA/DHA, and protein quality. Public health messaging should prioritise food quality, processing level, nutrient adequacy, adherence, and outcome hierarchy over binary dietary identities. Full article

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are vital leverage points for climate action, yet the role of campus food environments in supporting these commitments is rarely assessed. This mixed-methods diagnostic study examined the food environment, sustainability literacy, behavioural barriers, and reported preferences regarding plant-based eating at a major European university. Across 29 campus canteens, plant-based meals accounted for only 17.2% of menu options and less than 1% of actual meal volume, with substantial inconsistency in availability and labelling across weekdays and canteens. Student survey findings (n = 198) revealed low food sustainability literacy: 64.7% of participants failed the assessment, particularly males (78.1%) and omnivores (75.7%). Among omnivore respondents, the most frequent barriers to adopting plant-based diets were ideological resistance, nutrition concerns, palatability, convenience, and cost. Students most strongly endorsed improved taste, more options (70.2%), and lower prices (62.1%) as strategies to encourage plant-based choices. Taken together, these findings highlight a structural implementation gap between institutional sustainability commitments and the campus food environment. They underscore the need for targeted interventions to improve food sustainability literacy and to increase the availability and attractiveness of plant-based options required for climate mitigation. To address this systemic challenge, this paper proposes a scalable HEI Food Transition Framework, informed by the results, that integrates choice architecture, curricular reform, inclusive provisioning, and data-driven accountability, offering a strategic pathway to align campus food environments with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus), a non-native species accidentally introduced into China’s Irtysh River Basin, has formed a wild population with aquaculture potential, but its natural diet and protein utilization remain poorly understood. This study investigated its feeding ecology and digestive responses to protein sources to support ecological assessment and feed formulation. Intestinal contents and muscle samples from wild crayfish were analyzed using eDNA metabarcoding and fatty acid signature analysis. In vitro digestibility of 10 protein ingredients was evaluated with crude digestive enzyme extracts, and a 4-week trial compared an all-plant-protein diet (PPD) with an all-animal-protein diet (APD). eDNA indicated an omnivorous diet dominated by planktonic taxa, especially Rotifera, and fatty acid biomarkers suggested contributions from diatoms, dinoflagellates, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic organisms. Soybean meal and soy protein concentrate showed high dry matter digestibility, whereas fishmeal and krill meal had high crude protein digestibility and amino acid release. Compared with PPD, APD increased feed intake, apparent nutrient digestibility, hemolymph nutritional indicators, villus height, and intestinal trypsin and lipase activities; however, intestinal integrity was preserved in both groups, and most intestinal antioxidant indices did not differ significantly. These findings indicate that animal proteins enhance nutrient utilization in P. leptodactylus, while selected plant proteins may serve as partial alternatives. Full article

We investigated the association between farm animal welfare (FAW) concern and self-classified meat consumption behavior and consumers’ socio-demographic, animal-contact-related, and ideological background factors. Covariate analyses and a machine-learning algorithm, Random Forest, were used to analyze complex, non-linear relationships between the data from 2116 Dutch households. FAW concern often turns out to be moderate to strong but is not simply associated with reduced meat consumption. Political orientation showed the strongest association with FAW concern and diet. Left-wing orientation is positively associated with FAW concern and less frequent or no meat consumption. Christian affiliation does the opposite, while non-Christian religious affiliation is weakly associated with vegetarian or vegan diets. Men more likely report an omnivorous diet and less FAW concern, while women report a vegetarian or vegan diet and higher concern. Voting left or center, Christian affiliation, and higher education are linked to a flexitarian diet. Lower education is associated with an omnivorous diet. In both rural and urban regions, income and household composition have little to no associations with both dietary self-classification and FAW concern. Respondents with regular animal contact show relatively strong FAW concern but no association with self-identified diet. Our results suggest that reducing or abstaining from meat is most strongly associated with ideological orientations. FAW concern alone is not expressed in diet. Full article

Fire ants are known for their aggressive behavior, omnivorous diet, and construction of mounds on the soil surface. Their dispersal is facilitated by trade and habitat fragmentation, which have led to negative impacts on biodiversity, public health, and agriculture in many countries. In Brazil, information about their impacts is scarce and mostly limited to reports from the North Region. In the Atlantic Forest, a biome where most of Brazil’s population resides, there are no records of impacts associated with fire ants. This study examined farmers’ perceptions of the impacts of fire ants in the Atlantic Forest. A questionnaire was administered to collect information on respondents’ profiles, property characteristics, perceived impacts of fire ants, management practices, and health-related issues. Most respondents reported the regular presence of fire ants on their properties, although the perceived impacts on agricultural productivity were generally low to moderate, and control costs were typically less than $17. Widespread use of pesticides for fire ant control is reported by most farmers. Regarding stings, 85.1% of farmers reported having been stung, but only 0.6% required hospitalization. The most common reaction was itching. This pioneering study revealed that, although fire ants are present on many properties within the Atlantic Forest, the reported economic and health impacts are lower than expected, with most farmers experiencing minimal losses. Overall, the results for our sample suggest that the presence of fire ants does not result in significant economic losses for farmers. Nevertheless, fire ants are not overlooked, as non-conservationist control methods are employed. Such practices may lead to colony fragmentation, increasing their abundance and potentially negatively affecting local biodiversity. Full article

African pygmy hedgehogs (APHs) are increasingly kept as companion animals, yet evidence-based nutritional recommendations for this species remain limited. Commercial cat or kitten diets are still commonly used by owners and veterinarians in practice, despite being formulated exclusively for domestic cats rather than for hedgehogs with omnivorous–insectivorous feeding habits. This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between dietary regimen and serum biochemical parameters associated with renal function in APHs. Blood samples were collected from 19 client-owned APHs aged 12–68 months: 10 hedgehogs fed a commercial kitten diet and 9 fed a commercial APH-specific diet. Serum concentrations of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, phosphorus, and calcium were measured, and the nutritional composition of the two diets was compared using manufacturer declarations and targeted laboratory analyses. Hedgehogs fed the commercial kitten diet had significantly higher serum blood urea nitrogen (p = 0.0133), creatinine (p = 0.0279), and phosphorus (p = 0.0279) concentrations than those fed the APH-specific diet, whereas serum calcium concentrations did not differ significantly (p = 0.3846). These differences occurred despite similar dietary phosphorus content, while the commercial kitten diet had higher declared fat and lower fiber content. The findings suggest that dietary regimen may be associated with alterations in renal biochemical profiles in APHs and support the use of species-appropriate diets in clinical practice. Full article

Background: Data on the nutritional adequacy of unsupplemented vegetarians in Northeast China are limited. Methods: We compared dietary intake, body composition, and serum biomarkers among vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and omnivores. This cross-sectional study included 356 adults (all diet ≥ 2 years, no supplements). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ, body composition by BIA, and serum biomarkers. Kruskal–Wallis tests with Bonferroni correction were used. Results: Vegans had lower BMI (22.0 vs. 24.6 kg/m2), body fat (24.5% vs. 28.0%), and visceral fat (0.65 vs. 1.05 L) than omnivores (all p < 0.002). Vegans consumed more fiber (38.5 vs. 18.0 g/d) and vitamin C (180 vs. 85 mg/d), but less vitamin B12 (0.3 vs. 4.2 μg/d), vitamin D (0.5 vs. 3.2 μg/d), calcium (520 vs. 720 mg/d), iodine (65 vs. 130 μg/d), and selenium (45 vs. 85 μg/d). Serum vitamin B12, 25-(OH)D, ferritin, and selenium were significantly lower in vegans, while homocysteine was higher. The proportion of vegans with dietary intake below the recommendation reached 100% for vitamin B12 and 97% for vitamin D, whereas omnivores showed excessive sodium (75%) and SFA (70%) intake. Conclusions: In this Northeast China cohort, unsupplemented vegetarian diets offered favorable macronutrient profiles and body composition but were associated with a high prevalence of dietary intakes below recommendations for vitamin B12, vitamin D, iodine, selenium, zinc, and calcium. These findings underscore the need for targeted supplementation and food fortification strategies for individuals adhering to plant-based diets without supplement use in this region. Full article

Background/Objectives: Nutrition plays a core role in chronic disease management, and there is growing interest in the health impact of plant-based diets (PBDs) in people with overweight or obesity. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the evidence on the health effect of PBDs compared to omnivorous diets in overweight or obese individuals. Methods: We searched the databases Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform from inception to 3 January 2024. Two review authors independently screened studies for eligibility, extracted data, evaluated the risk of bias, and rated the certainty of the evidence using GRADE. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021225525. We used random-effects meta-analysis to analyze data. Results: Of 2664 records identified, 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and six ongoing studies met the inclusion criteria. The available evidence suggests little to no difference between plant-based and omnivorous diets for body weight, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, serum glucose, serum insulin, insulin sensitivity, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol and body fat mass. Plant-based diets may slightly reduce LDL cholesterol. They may also reduce BMI and HbA1c, although the certainty of the evidence is very low. Longer-duration dietary interventions (14 weeks or more) showed greater improvements in BMI, LDL cholesterol and HbA1c. Conclusions: Plant-based diets may represent a dietary option for people with overweight or obesity and may support modest improvements in selected cardiometabolic outcomes, although the available evidence is limited and uncertain. Most outcomes showed little or no difference between PBDs and comparison diets, while the observed effects on BMI and HbA1c were supported by very low certainty evidence. Full article

Background: Diet is a key modifiable factor influencing oral health and may shape the oral microbiota. While individual nutrients, especially free sugars, have been widely studied, the role of overall dietary patterns remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association between dietary patterns and oral microbiota in humans. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science were searched up to 18 March 2026. Studies assessing defined dietary patterns (Mediterranean, vegan, vegetarian, omnivorous) and oral microbiota using sequencing-based methods in healthy individuals were included. Due to heterogeneity in study design, dietary assessment, and microbiome analysis, a narrative synthesis was conducted. Results: Six studies (n = 448 participants) were included. Dietary patterns showed limited impact on overall microbiota structure, with no consistent changes in alpha and beta diversity. However, differences were observed at the taxonomic level. The Mediterranean diet was generally associated with a lower abundance of periodontopathogenic taxa. Plant-based and omnivorous diets showed distinct microbial profiles, particularly involving Neisseria, Haemophilus, Prevotella, and Streptococcus. Functional activity and metabolomic profiles appeared more sensitive to dietary variation than taxonomic composition alone. Conclusions: The oral microbiota appears relatively stable across dietary patterns, although diet may influence specific taxa and functional pathways relevant to oral health. The Mediterranean diet shows the most consistent association with beneficial microbial shifts. Modifying the feeding habits of economically valuable carnivorous fish species towards omnivorous or herbivorous diets is of significant importance in aquaculture. In previous studies, we obtained a hybrid fish (BM) by crossing herbivorous female Megalobrama amblycephala (BSB) (♀) with carnivorous male Culter mongolicus (MC) (♂). Preliminary research indicated that BM exhibits herbivorous tendencies and rapid growth. To further evaluate the feeding characteristics and application potential of BM, this study systematically analyzed and compared BM with its parental groups, focusing on the structural traits of feeding organs, digestive enzyme activity, hepatic transcriptome, and gut microbiota features. The results demonstrate that BM possesses intermediate morphological traits in its feeding organs, with measurable ratios lying between those of BSB and MC and closer to BSB. In terms of intestinal morphology, BM also exhibits hybrid characteristics, showing greater similarity to BSB. Compared to BSB, BM exhibited significantly higher trypsin and lipase activities in both the intestine and liver (p < 0.05), although these levels remained lower than those in MC (p < 0.05) and were closer to BSB. The α-amylase activity in BM was significantly lower than in BSB (p < 0.05) but higher than in MC (p < 0.05). Regarding muscle composition, BM showed a significant increase in protein content compared to both parental lines BSB and MC (p < 0.05), while its crude fat content was significantly lower than that of the paternal line MC (p < 0.05), and showed no significant difference from the maternal line BSB. Transcriptome analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes in the liver of BM were significantly enriched in pathways related to nutrient intake and metabolism, including the MAPK signaling pathway, insulin signaling pathway, glycerophospholipid metabolism, adipocytokine signaling pathway, arginine and proline metabolism, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, all closely associated with feeding habits in fish. The analysis of gut microbiota showed greater similarity between BM and BSB. Overall, the findings demonstrate that BM is a high-quality hybrid fish with herbivorous tendencies and elevated muscle protein content, which highlights its considerable potential for reducing feed costs and promoting sustainable aquaculture. These results provide supporting data for the future promotion and utilization of BM. Full article

Background/Objectives: Plant-based diets are increasingly adopted by families with young children, yet their potential effects on bone development and metabolic regulation during early childhood remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to evaluate body composition, bone mineral density (BMD), biochemical markers of bone turnover, and adipokine profiles in healthy children aged 5–6 years adhering to lacto-ovo-vegetarian or omnivorous diets. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted in a well-characterized cohort of 90 healthy normal-weight children consuming either lacto-ovo-vegetarian or omnivorous diets. Body composition and bone mineral density were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and circulating markers of bone formation, resorption, and adipokines were determined using ELISA methods. Correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationships between anthropometric variables, bone parameters, and adipokines. Results: No significant differences were observed between vegetarian and omnivorous diets in anthropometric characteristics, bone mineral content (BMC), or BMD, indicating comparable skeletal status. However, vegetarian children exhibited significantly higher levels of bone turnover markers, including bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) (p = 0.023) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) (p = 0.035), and a lower osteocalcin OC/CTX-I ratio (p = 0.027). These findings may suggest a subtle imbalance in bone remodeling dynamics in these children, although their clinical significance remains uncertain. Additionally, higher levels of carboxylated osteocalcin (Gla-OC) (p = 0.022) and an increased carboxylated to undercarboxylated OC (Gla-OC/Glu-OC) ratio (p = 0.005) were observed in vegetarian children. Among adipokines, vegetarian children showed lower HMW adiponectin levels (p = 0.05) and a lower HMW/total adiponectin ratio (p = 0.012). Correlation analyses revealed distinct metabolic patterns between groups. In vegetarian children, bone parameters were primarily associated with lean mass, indicating the predominant role of mechanical factors in skeletal development. In contrast, omnivorous children demonstrated a more integrated relationship between bone indices and adipokines. Conclusions: In conclusion, while a lacto-ovo-vegetarian balanced diet supports normal bone mass in early childhood, it may be associated with subtle alterations in bone metabolism and its regulatory pathways, including adipokine profiles. These findings highlight the importance of adequate dietary planning and underscore the need for longitudinal studies to determine long-term effects on bone status. Full article

Micronutrient status is strongly influenced by dietary patterns; however, the extent to which plant-forward dietary patterns versus omnivorous diets shape micronutrient profiles and their associations with blood pressure, body composition, and cardiovascular health remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to comprehensively assess associations between blood micronutrient profiles, blood pressure, and body composition in adults, with analyses stratified by dietary patterns to compare omnivorous and plant-forward dieters. Secondary cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from an exploratory study of 488 Austrian adults (median age: 38 y [IQR 21]; 48% female, 52% male). Participants were classified as omnivores (n = 260) or plant-forward dieters (including 194 flexitarians, 25 vegetarians, and 9 vegans; n = 228). Blood pressure and anthropometric measurements were obtained alongside fasting venous blood sample analysis to quantify a comprehensive panel of micronutrient, hematological, lipid, and inflammatory biomarkers. Micronutrient concentrations were standardized (scaled −1 to +1, truncated ±3) and evaluated for deficiency or excess according to sex-specific reference ranges. Linear regression was used to analyze the association of micronutrients with BMI, including age and sex as covariates. Vitamin D showed the highest micronutrient deficiency, observed in 96% of omnivores and 93% of plant-forward dieters. Across both dietary subgroups, multiple micronutrients, together with age and sex, were significant correlates of body weight, body mass index, and blood pressure (p < 0.05). Significant differences between omnivores and plant-forward dieters were observed for blood pressure, lipid, hematological, and inflammatory markers, with participants adhering to plant-forward dietary habits exhibiting lower blood pressure and more favorable lipid profiles (p < 0.05). The findings highlight the potential of diet-type-specific strategies for personalized cardiometabolic risk management. Full article

Plant-based diets are generally associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases; however, the relationship between a vegan diet and genome integrity remains insufficiently characterized. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed primary DNA damage in peripheral blood cells of vegans and omnivores. A total of 62 apparently healthy adults were included: 31 vegans (median vegan diet duration 4.5 years) and 31 omnivores matched for sex and smoking status. DNA damage was assessed using the alkaline comet assay under standardized conditions and expressed as tail intensity (% tail DNA), tail length, tail moment, and total comet area. Tail intensity was significantly higher in vegans than in omnivores (B = 1.98; 95% CI 0.19 to 3.76; p = 0.031) after adjustment for age, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and alcohol consumption. Within the vegan group, longer duration of adherence to a vegan diet was positively associated with tail intensity, independent of age (B = 0.23; 95% CI 0.03 to 0.43; p = 0.026). These findings suggest that adherence to a vegan diet and its duration may be associated with higher levels of primary DNA damage; however, these results should be interpreted with caution given the observational design and modest sample size.
