This study aimed to evaluate solid-state fermentation (SSF) as a sustainable approach for the simultaneous detoxification of olive pomace (OP) and the production of industrially relevant enzymes. OP, a semisolid byproduct of olive oil extraction, is rich in lignocellulose and phenolic compounds, which limit its direct reuse due to phytotoxicity. A native strain of Aspergillus sp., isolated from OP, was employed as the biological agent, while grape pomace (GP) was added as a co-substrate to enhance substrate structure. Fermentations were conducted at two scales, Petri dishes (20 g) and a fixed-bed bioreactor (FBR, 2 kg), under controlled conditions (25 °C, 7 days). Key parameters monitored included dry and wet weight loss, pH, color, phenolic content, and enzymatic activity. Significant reductions in color and polyphenol content were achieved, reaching 68% in Petri dishes and 88.1% in the FBR, respectively. In the FBR, simultaneous monitoring of dry and wet weight loss enabled the estimation of fungal biotransformation, revealing a hysteresis phenomenon not previously reported in SSF studies. Enzymes such as xylanase, endopolygalacturonase, cellulase, and tannase exhibited peak activities between 150 and 180 h, with maximum values of 424.6 U·g−1, 153.6 U·g−1, 67.43 U·g−1, and 6.72 U·g−1, respectively. The experimental data for weight loss, enzyme production, and phenolic reduction were accurately described by logistic and first-order models. These findings demonstrate the high metabolic efficiency of the fungal isolate under SSF conditions and support the feasibility of scaling up this process. The proposed strategy offers a low-cost and sustainable solution for OP valorization, aligning with circular economy principles by transforming agro-industrial residues into valuable bioproducts. The large number of underutilized tree residues in Japan is a matter of concern, and their appropriate application needs to be promoted. Trees are very diverse, and there are differences in the volatile essential oil compounds and biological activities among different tree species. However, the effects of these tree species’ characteristics on human sensitivity and mental and physical functionality remain underexplored. This study investigated the effects of essential oils from multiple tree species on subjective and physiological responses. The essential oils from nine tree species were tested, subjective scent assessments were conducted, and their effect on autonomic nervous activity was measured. The volatile profiles of the oils were analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Our findings revealed clear differences in the composition of volatile essential oils among species, which influenced the scent evaluation and individual preferences. We suggest that scent preferences have the potential to influence physiological responses. The findings indicate that volatile essential oils could play a potential role in making use of tree resources effectively, and they may also be beneficial for maintaining human health. Full article

The plant-based oil industry contributes significantly to food waste/by-products in the form of underutilized biomass, including oil pomace, cake/meal, seeds, peels, wastewater, etc. These waste/by-products contain a significant quantity of nutritious and bioactive compounds (phenolics, lignans, flavonoids, dietary fiber, proteins, and essential minerals) with proven health-promoting effects. The utilization of them as natural, cost-effective, and food-grade functional ingredients in novel food formulations holds considerable potential. This review highlights the potential of waste/by-products generated during plant-based oil processing as a promising source of bioactive compounds and covers systematic research, including recent studies focusing on innovative extraction and processing techniques. It also sheds light on their promising potential for valorization as food ingredients, with a focus on specific examples of food fortification. Furthermore, the potential for value creation in the food industry is emphasized, taking into account associated challenges and limitations, as well as future perspectives. Overall, the current information suggests that the valorization of plant-based oil industry waste and by-products for use in the food industry could substantially reduce malnutrition and poverty, generate favorable health outcomes, mitigate environmental concerns, and enhance economic profit in a sustainable way by developing health-promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems. The olive oil industry, a key component of Southern Europe’s agricultural sector, generates large amounts of by-products during processing, including olive leaves, branches, stones, and seeds. In the context of growing environmental concerns and limited natural resources—particularly in the Mediterranean regions—there is increasing interest in circular economy approaches that promote the valorization of agricultural residues. These by-products are rich in bioactive compounds, particularly phenolics such as oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, which are well known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to evaluate the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of by-products from three olive cultivars using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC–PDA) and mass spectrometry (MS). The leaves and seeds, particularly from the “Cobrança” and a non-identified variety, presented the highest antioxidant activity, as well as the highest concentration of phenolic compounds, demonstrating once again the direct relationship between these two parameters. The identification of the compounds present demonstrated that the leaves and branches have a high diversity of phenolic compounds, particularly secoiridoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, phenylethanoids, and lignans. An inverse relationship was observed between the chlorophyll and carotenoid content and the antioxidant activity, suggesting that phenolic compounds, rather than pigments, are the major contributors to antioxidant properties. Therefore, the by-products of the olive oil industry are a valuable source of sustainable bioactive compounds for distinct industrial sectors, such as the food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries, aligning with the European strategies for resource efficiency and waste reduction in the agri-food industries. Alperujo, a solid by-product from the two-phase olive oil extraction process, poses significant environmental challenges due to its high organic load, phytotoxicity, and phenolic content. At the same time, it represents a promising feedstock for recovering value-added compounds such as phenols and volatile fatty acids (VFAs). When used as a substrate for white rot fungi (WRF), it also produces ligninolytic enzymes. This study explores the use of two native WRF, Anthracophyllum discolor and Stereum hirsutum, for the biotransformation of alperujo under solid-state fermentation conditions, with and without supplementation of copper and manganese, two cofactors known to enhance fungal enzymatic activity. S. hirsutum stood out for its ability to release high concentrations of phenolic compounds (up to 6001 ± 236 mg gallic acid eq L−1) and VFAs (up to 1627 ± 325 mg L−1) into the aqueous extract, particularly with metal supplementation. In contrast, A. discolor was more effective in degrading phenolic compounds within the solid matrix, achieving a 41% reduction over a 30-day period. However, its ability to accumulate phenolics and VFAs in the extract was limited. Both WRF exhibited increased enzymatic activities (particularly Laccase and Manganese Peroxidase) with the addition of Cu-Mn, highlighting the potential of the aqueous extract as a natural source of biocatalysts. Phytotoxicity assays using Solanum lycopersicum seeds confirmed a partial detoxification of the treated alperujo. However, none of the fungi could entirely eliminate inhibitory effects on their own, suggesting the need for complementary stabilization steps before agricultural reuse. Overall, the results indicate that S. hirsutum, especially when combined with metal supplementation, is better suited for valorizing alperujo through the recovery of bioactive compounds. Meanwhile, A. discolor may be more suitable for detoxifying the solid phase strategies. These findings support the integration of fungal pretreatment into biorefinery schemes that valorize agroindustrial residues while mitigating environmental issues. Full article

Optimized Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction for Enhanced Recovery of Valuable Phenolic Compounds from Olive By-Products

The olive oil industry generates by-products like olive leaves and pomace, which are rich in bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols. This study applied a circular economy approach to valorize these residues using green ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with GRAS solvents. Key parameters (solvent composition, ultrasound amplitude, and specific energy) were optimized via Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to enhance polyphenol recovery and yield. Ethanol concentration proved to be the most influential factor. Optimal conditions for olive pomace were 100% ethanol, 46 μm amplitude, and 25 J∙mL−1 specific energy, while olive leaves required 72% ethanol with similar ultrasound settings. Under these conditions, extracts were prepared and analyzed using HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS and DPPH assays. The optimized UAE process achieved yields of 15–20% in less than 5 min and under mild conditions. Optimal extracts showed high oleuropein content (6 mg/g in leaves, 5 mg/g in pomace), lower hydroxytyrosol levels, and minimal oxidized derivatives, suggesting reduced degradation compared to conventional methods. These findings demonstrate UAE’s effectiveness in recovering valuable phenolics from olive by-products, supporting sustainable and efficient resource use. Full article

The increasing need for sustainable valorization of fossil-based and waste-derived materials has gained interest in converting complex organic matrices such as kerogen into valuable chemicals. This study explores a two-step oxidative strategy to decompose and valorize kerogen-rich oil shale, aiming to develop a locally based source of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (DCAs). The method combines air oxidation with subsequent nitric acid treatment to enable selective breakdown of the organic structure under milder conditions. Air oxidation was conducted at 165–175 °C using 1% KOH as an alkaline promoter and 40 bar oxygen pressure (or alternatively 185 °C at 30 bar), targeting 30–40% carbon conversion. The resulting material was then subjected to nitric acid oxidation using an 8% HNO3 solution. This approach yielded up to 23% DCAs, with pre-oxidation allowing a twofold reduction in acid dosage while maintaining efficiency. However, two-step oxidation was still accompanied by substantial degradation of the structure, resulting in elevated CO2 formation, highlighting the need to balance conversion and carbon retention. The process offers a possible route for transforming solid fossil residues into useful chemical precursors and supports the advancement of regionally sourced, sustainable DCA production from unconventional raw materials. The Threshold Pressure Gradient (TPG) phenomenon exerts a profound influence on fluid flow dynamics in heavy oil reservoirs. However, the discrepancies between the True Threshold Pressure Gradient (TTPG) and Pseudo-Threshold Pressure Gradient (PTPG) significantly impede accurate residual oil evaluation and rational field development planning. This study proposes a dual-exponential conversion model that effectively bridges the discrepancy between TTPG and PTPG, achieving an average deviation of 12.77–17.89% between calculated and measured TTPG values. Nonlinear seepage simulations demonstrate that TTPG induces distinct flow barrier effects, driving residual oil accumulation within low-permeability interlayers and the formation of well-defined “dead oil zones.” In contrast, the linear approximation inherent in PTPG overestimates flow initiation resistance, resulting in a 47% reduction in recovery efficiency and widespread residual oil enrichment. By developing a TTPG–PTPG conversion model and incorporating genuine nonlinear seepage characteristics into simulations, this study effectively mitigates the systematic errors arising from the linear PTPG assumption, thereby providing a scientific basis for accurately predicting residual oil distribution and enhancing oil recovery efficiency. The paper investigates the process of degumming substandard soybean oil using an enzyme complex of phospholipases to prepare it as a feedstock for biodiesel production. Dehumidification is an important refining step aimed at reducing the phosphorus content, which exceeds the permissible limits according to ASTM, EN, and ISO standards, by re-moving phospholipids. The enzyme complex of phospholipases includes phospholipase C, which specifically targets phosphatidylinositol, and phospholipase A2, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of phospholipids into water-soluble phosphates and lysophospholipids. This process contributes to the efficient removal of phospholipids, increased neutral oil yield, and reduced residual oil in the humic phase. The use of an enzyme complex of phospholipases provides an innovative, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method of oil purification. The results of the study demonstrate the high efficiency of using the phospholipase enzyme complex in the processing of substandard soybean oil, which allows reducing the content of total phosphorus to 0.001% by weight, turning it into a high-quality raw material for biodiesel production. The proposed approach contributes to increasing the profitability of agricultural raw materials and the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies in the field of renewable energy. Engineering of Cupriavidus necator could enable the production of various polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs); particularly, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P(3HB-co-3HH)), a biopolymer with enhanced mechanical and thermal properties compared to poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), can be efficiently produced from vegetable oils. However, challenges remain in the recovery process, particularly in removing residual oil and minimizing degradation of the polymer structure during extraction steps. This study investigated the effects of ethanol-based defatting on the recovery and polymeric properties of P(3HB-co-3HH). The proposed method involves the addition of ethanol to the cell broth to effectively remove residual oil. Ethanol improved the separation of microbial cells from the broth, thereby streamlining the downstream recovery process. Using ethanol in the washing step increased the recovery yield and purity to 95.7% and 83.4%, respectively (compared to 87.4% and 76.2% for distilled water washing), representing improvements of 8.3% and 7.2%. Ethanol washing also resulted in a 19% higher molecular weight compared to water washing, indicating reduced polymer degradation. In terms of physical properties, the elongation at break showed a significant difference: 241.9 ± 27.0% with ethanol washing compared to water (177.7 ± 10.3%), indicating ethanol washing retains flexibility. Overall, an ethanol washing step for defatting could simplify the recovery steps, increase yield and purity, and retain mechanical properties, especially for P(3HB-co-3HH) from oils. Full article

This research analyzes the innovative development of carnauba wax coatings enriched with essential oils (EOs: lemon, orange, grapefruit, clove, oregano, and cinnamon) or fruit by-products (FBPs: avocado, tomato, carrot, orange, lemon, and grapefruit) to improve postharvest preservation of organic oranges and lemons. Six EOs and six FBPs were evaluated for total phenolic content (TPC) and in vitro antifungal activity against Penicillium digitatum. Based on results, grapefruit, oregano, and clove EOs were selected for lemons, while avocado, orange, and grapefruit FBPs were selected for oranges. An in vivo test at 20 °C for 15 days with carnauba wax coatings assessed antifungal performance. Clove EO and avocado FBP showed strong in vitro inhibition and consistent hyphal suppression (~100 and ~82%, respectively). In vivo, coatings with grapefruit EO and avocado FBP significantly reduced fungal decay and sporulation (~75%) in lemons and oranges, respectively. Coated fruits also retained weight losses by ~25% compared to uncoated ones. These findings suggest that phenolic-rich natural extracts, especially from agro-industrial residues like avocado peels, offer a promising and sustainable strategy for postharvest citrus disease control. Further studies should test coating effectiveness in large-scale trials under refrigeration combined with other preservation strategies. Full article

The olive oil sector constitutes a fundamental pillar in the Mediterranean region from socio-economic and cultural perspectives. Nonetheless, it produces significant amounts of waste, leading to numerous environmental issues. These waste streams contain valuable compounds that can be recovered and utilized as inputs for various applications. This study introduces a novel value chain for olive wastes, focused on extracting lignin from olive pomace by ionic liquids and polyphenols from olive mill wastewater, which are then incorporated as hybrid nanoparticles in the formulation of an innovative starch-based biofertilizer. This biofertilizer, obtained by using residual wastewater as a source of soluble nitrogen, acting at the same time as a plasticizer for the biopolymer, was demonstrated to surpass traditional NPK biofertilizers’ efficiency, allowing for root growth and foliage in drought conditions. In order to recognize the environmental impact due to its production and align it with the technical output, the circularity and environmental performance of the proposed system were innovatively evaluated through a combination of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI). LCA results indicated that the initial upcycling process was potentially characterized by significant hot spots, primarily related to energy consumption (>0.70 kWh/kg of water) during the early processing stages. As a result, the LCA score of this preliminary version of the biofertilizer may be higher than that of conventional commercial products, due to reliance on thermal processes for water removal and the substantial contribution (56%) of lignin/polyphenol precursors to the total LCA score. Replacing energy-intensive thermal treatments with more efficient alternatives represents a critical area for improvement. The MCI value of 0.84 indicates limited potential for further enhancement. Deep-sea oil and gas pipelines undergo significant plastic strain during reel-lay installation. Additionally, the static strain aging phenomenon that occurs during service can further deteriorate the mechanical properties of the pipelines. This study investigates the plastic deformation mechanism of reel-lay pipeline steel by subjecting the test steel to 5% pre-strain followed by aging treatment at 250 °C for 1 h. The present study systematically correlates the evolution of mechanical properties with microstructural changes through microstructural characterization techniques such as EBSD, TEM, and XRD. The results demonstrate that after pre-straining, the yield strength of the experimental steel increases due to dislocation strengthening and residual stress generation, while its uniform elongation decreases. Although no significant changes in grain size are observed macroscopically, microstructural characterization reveals a substantial increase in dislocation density within the matrix, forming dislocation cells and walls. These substructures lead to a deterioration of the material’s work hardening capacity. Following aging treatment, the tested steel exhibits further increased yield strength and reduced uniform elongation. After aging treatment, although the dislocation density in the matrix slightly decreases and dislocation tangles are somewhat reduced, the Cottrell atmosphere pinning effect leads to a further decline in work hardening capability, ultimately resulting in the deterioration of plasticity in reel-lay pipeline steel. The instantaneous hardening exponent curve shows that the work hardening phenomenon becomes more pronounced in the tested steel after strain aging as the tempering temperature increases. Full article

Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) is a durable and cost-effective alternative to conventional rigid and flexible pavement and is formed by permeating an open-graded asphalt (OGA) layer with high-fluidity cement grout. The degradation of SFP mattresses due to fuel oil spills can result in significant maintenance costs. Incorporating glass waste (GW) into the construction of SFPs offers an eco-friendly solution, helping to reduce repair costs and environmental impact by conserving natural resources and minimizing landfill waste. The main objective of this research is to investigate the mechanical performance and fuel oil resistance of SFP composites containing different levels of glass aggregate (GlaSFlex composites). Fine glass aggregate (FGA) was replaced with fine virgin aggregate at levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by mass. The results indicated the feasibility of utilizing FGA as a total replacement (100%) for fine aggregate in the OGA structural layer of SFPs. At 100% FGA, the composite exhibited excellent mechanical performance and durability, including a compressive strength of 8.93 MPa, a Marshall stability exceeding 38 kN, and a stiffness modulus of 19,091 MPa. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated minimal permanent deformation (0.04 mm), a high residual stability of 94.7%, a residual compressive strength of 83.3%, and strong resistance to fuel spillage with a mass loss rate of less than 1%, indicating excellent durability. Açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) is a native fruit of the Amazon, and its production chain is centered in the state of Pará. The processing of açaí fruits generates large amounts of solid waste, which can pose serious risks to the environment if not used and managed properly. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that until this moment, no research had been reported in the literature on the pyrolysis of açaí fibers and the chemical composition of the aqueous phase, making possible a broad set of applications including biogas production. The present research proposes a study of the pyrolysis of açaí seeds and fibers and the physicochemical and compositional characterization of the aqueous phase products. In this way, açaí processing residues were collected in the city of Belém, PA. The seeds and fibers were dried and impregnated with NaOH solutions, and subsequently subjected to pyrolysis on a laboratory scale. The liquid products from pyrolysis were characterized through acidity index analysis, FT-IR, and gas chromatography. The increase in the concentration of the impregnating agent led to an increase in bio-oil yield from both the seeds (ranging from 3.3% to 6.6%) and the fibers (ranging from 1.2% to 3.7%). The yield in the aqueous phase showed an inverse behavior, decreasing as the concentration of NaOH increased, both in the seeds (ranging from 41% to 37.5%) and the fibers (ranging from 33.7% to 21.2%). High acidity levels were found in the liquid products studied, which decreased as the concentration of the impregnating agent increased. The increase in the concentration of the impregnating agent (NaOH) influenced the chemical composition of the obtained liquid products, leading to a decrease in oxygenated compounds and an increase in nitrogenous compounds in both experimental matrices, which was also evidenced by the reduction in acidity.
