Reliable prediction of tunnel thruster performance under reverse, or off-design, reverse operating direction (ROD) conditions, is crucial for modern vessels that require bidirectional thrust from a single unit—such as yachts and offshore support vessels. Despite the increasing demand for such a capability, there remains limited understanding of the unsteady hydrodynamic behavior and performance implications of ROD operation. This study addresses this gap through a scale-resolving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigation of a full-scale, fixed-pitch propeller with a diameter of 0.62, installed in a tunnel geometry representative of yacht-class side thrusters. Using advanced turbulence modeling, we compare the thruster’s performance under both the normal operating direction (NOD) and ROD. The results reveal notable differences: in ROD, the upstream separation zone was more compact and elongated, average thrust increases by approximately 3–4%, and torque and pressure fluctuations rise by 15–30%. These findings demonstrate that a single tunnel thruster can meet bidirectional manoeuvring requirements. However, the significantly elevated unsteady loads during ROD operation offer a plausible explanation for the increased noise and vibration frequently observed in practice. Full article

This paper presents a method to model and optimize the supply chain processes for floating offshore wind turbines using a network model based on Generalized Multi-Commodity Network Flows (GMCNF). The proposed method represents production bases, base ports, installation sites, component transfer areas, and transportation routes as nodes and arcs within the network. The installation process is modeled using three transport concepts: assembling components at the base port, direct assembly and installation at the installation site, and transferring components to the installation vessel at a nearby port. These processes are expressed as a linear network model, with the objective function set to minimize total transportation and assembly costs. The optimal transportation network is derived by solving the network problem while incorporating constraints such as supply, demand, and transportation capacity. Case studies demonstrate the method’s effectiveness in optimizing the supply chain and evaluating potential new production site locations for floating foundations, considering overall supply chain optimization. The Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL), as a critical component of Earth’s climate system, governs the exchange of matter and energy between the ocean surface and the lower atmosphere. This study presents shipborne Doppler lidar observations conducted during 12 January to 3 February 2024, along the southeastern Chinese coast. Employing a Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar (CDWL) system onboard the R/V “Yuezhanyu” research vessel, we investigated the spatiotemporal variability of MABL characteristics through integration with ERA5 reanalysis data. The key findings reveal a significant positive correlation between MABL height and surface sensible heat flux in winter, underscoring the dominant role of sensible heat flux in boundary layer development. Through the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the ERA5 regional boundary layer height, sensible heat flux, and sea level pressure, we demonstrate MABL height over the coastal seas typically exceeds the corresponding terrestrial atmospheric boundary layer height and exhibits weak diurnal variation. The CDWL observations highlight complex wind field dynamics influenced by synoptic conditions and maritime zones. Compared to onshore regions, the MABL over offshore areas further away from land has lower wind shear changes and a more uniform wind field. Notably, the terrain of Taiwan, China, induces significant low-level jet formations within the MABL. Low-level jets and low boundary layer height promote the pollution episode observed by CDWL. This research provides new insights into MABL dynamics over East Asian marginal seas, with implications for improving boundary layer parameterization in regional climate models and advancing our understanding of coastal meteorological processes. Navigation in offshore wind farm (OWF) areas is essential for construction, maintenance, safety, and traditional activities like fishing. However, the presence of OWFs extends to sea routes, negatively impacting maritime transport economics. This paper examines navigational risk indicators in the vertical and horizontal planes of the ship domain for three representative vessels navigating under different hydrometeorological conditions within the location of a proposed offshore wind farm in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea. The study compares three types of domain parameters defined by the PIANC guidelines, Coldwell’s two-dimensional model, and Rutkowski’s three-dimensional model. The analysis includes navigational hazards located ahead of the ship’s bow and astern from the aft, as well as keeping under-keel and over-head clearance. Besides the main numerical indicators of navigational risk estimated for obstacles on the port and starboard sides, the study emphasizes the importance of such additional factors. The primary objective of this paper is to identify the ship types that can navigate and fish safely in proximity to and within the OWF area. The analysis employs hydrometeorological data, mathematical models, and operational data derived from maritime navigation and maneuvering simulators. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance maritime safety in OWF areas. Full article

Overfishing and climate change have led to the depletion of fishery resources in the offshore South China Sea. The purpleback flying squid (Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its ecological and economic value. However, information on its preferred habitat conditions remains scarce. This study integrates geostatistical and fisheries oceanographic approaches to explore optimal spatial–temporal scales for habitat modeling and to assess habitat changes under warming scenarios. Utilizing fishery data from 2013 to 2017, environmental variables including SST, sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA), and chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) were analyzed. Fishing effort data revealed significant seasonal differences, with the highest vessel numbers in summer and the lowest in autumn. Among the six modeling schemes, the combination of 0.5° × 0.5° spatial resolution and seasonal temporal resolution yielded the highest HSI model accuracy (84.02%). Optimal environmental ranges varied by season. Simulations of SST deviations (±0.2 °C, ±0.5 °C, and ±1 °C) showed that extreme warming or cooling could eliminate suitable habitats. These findings highlight the vulnerability of squid habitats to thermal shifts and support adaptive fishery strategies in the South China Sea. Full article

The growing scale of offshore wind farms and increasing transmission distances has driven the demand for optimized offshore substation (OSS) configurations. This study proposes a comprehensive techno-economic framework to minimize the total lifecycle cost (LCC) of an OSS by determining the optimal number of OSSs and transformers considering wind farm capacity and transmission distance. The methodology incorporates three cost models: capital expenditure (CAPEX), operational expenditure (OPEX), and expected energy not supplied (EENS). CAPEX considers transformer costs, topside structural mass effects, and nonlinear installation costs. OPEX accounts for substation maintenance and vessel operating expenses, and EENS is calculated using transformer failure probability models and redundancy configurations. The optimization is performed through scenario-based simulations and a net present value (NPV)-based comparative analysis to determine the cost-effective configurations. The quantitative analysis demonstrates that for small- to medium-scale wind farms (500–1000 MW), configurations using 1–2 substations and 3–4 transformers achieve minimal LCC regardless of the transmission distance. In contrast, large-scale wind farms (≥1500 MW) require additional substations to mitigate transmission losses and disruption risks, particularly over long distances. These results demonstrate that OSS design should holistically balance initial investment costs, operational reliability, and supply security, providing practical insights for cost-effective planning of next-generation offshore wind projects. This paper analyzes the potential of retrofitting in “greening” of European inland vessels and coastal ships, which are normally not the focus of major international environmental policies aimed at waterborne transport. Therefore, greening of the examined fleets would result, for the most part, in additional emission reductions to the environmental targets put forth by the International Maritime Organization. By scoping past and ongoing pilot projects, the most prominent retrofit trends in the greening of inland and coastal ships are identified. Assuming a scenario in which the observed trends are scaled up to the fleet level, the possible emission abatement is estimated (both on the tank-to-wake and well-to-wake bases), as well as the capital and operational costs associated with the retrofit. Therefore, the paper shows what can be achieved in terms of greening if the current trends are followed. The results show that the term “greening” may take a significantly different meaning contingent on the approaches, perspectives, and targets considered. The total costs of a retrofit of a single vessel may be excessively high; however, the costs may significantly vary depending on the vessel power requirements, operational profile, and technology applied. While some trends are worth following (electrification of ferries and small inland passenger ships), others may be too cost-intensive and not satisfactorily efficient in terms of emissions reduction (retrofit of offshore supply vessels with dual-fuel methanol engines). Nevertheless, the assessment of different retrofit technologies strongly depends on the adopted criteria, including but not limited to the total cost of the retrofit of the entire fleet segment, cost of the retrofit of a single vessel, emission abatement achieved by the retrofit of a fleet segment, average emission abatement per retrofitted vessel, and cost of abatement of one ton of greenhouse gases, etc. Full article

Simulation and Process Optimization of Online Cooling for S460 Thick Plates

Marine engineering thick plates are essential structural materials for large vessels and offshore platforms, and optimizing their manufacturing processes is critical for advancing marine equipment. This study examined the microstructural and property variations in 120 mm-thick S460 plates fabricated by thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP). A finite element model was developed to simulate the cooling phase, enabling the prediction of the internal cooling path in the thick plate. An optimized cooling scheme was proposed, which was validated against the model and implemented. The following key results were obtained: (1) Under the initial cooling parameters (initial temperature: 715 °C, duration: 130 s), the 60 mm depth toughness was severely compromised, as evidenced by a low −40 °C impact energy of 59 J, significantly lower than values observed at the10 mm and 30 mm depth positions. Microstructural analysis revealed that the 60 mm depth region was dominated by ferritic bainite and pearlite, with a pearlite content of 8.7%. Numerical simulations further indicated a 60 mm depth cooling rate of 1.10 °C/s under these conditions. (2) Model predictions confirmed the original 60 mm depth cooling rate of 1.10 °C/s. The optimized process increased the initial cooling temperature to 725 °C and extended the cooling time to 160 s, achieving an enhanced 60 mm depth cooling rate of 1.36 °C/s. (3) The optimized process remarkably improved the 60 mm depth impact energy to 144 J, achieving near-complete elimination of pearlite, increased granular bainite content, refined M-A constituent size, and enhanced density of high-angle grain boundaries. This study demonstrates that enhancing internal temperature gradients and prolonging cooling durations can effectively inhibit microstructural degradation in 60 mm depth regions of thick plates, providing both theoretical foundations and practical methodologies for optimizing TMCP processes of extra-thick steel plates. The frequent occurrence of collision accidents between merchant and fishing vessels in China’s offshore waters not only threatens human lives and property, but also disrupts shipping and fishing activities and may cause marine environmental pollution. To effectively reduce such accidents and increase maritime safety in Chinese coastal waters, this study integrates association rules with complex networks to develop a directed weighted network of causal factors. Grounded theory and the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) are applied to identify and categorize causal factors from 152 collision accident investigation reports. Potential causal relationships are mined using the association rule, which is then applied to construct the causal network. Finally, the topological characteristics of the network are analyzed. The results reveal that serious negligence in lookout, failure to assess collision risks properly, and failure to adopt a safe speed significantly impact collision accidents. These findings highlight the necessity of implementing targeted preventive measures to address critical factors. This study provides valuable insights for maritime stakeholders to develop effective strategies. Full article

This study, based on the vessel position data of pump-suction beam trawlers and the integrated species distribution model (ISDM), deeply analyzes the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of the habitat of Antarctic krill and the contributions of key environmental factors. The Convolutional Neural Network–attention model (CNN–attention model) was used to identify the fishing status of the vessel position data of Norwegian pump-suction beam trawlers for Antarctic krill during the fishing seasons from 2021 to 2023. Variables of marine environment, including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), chlorophyll concentration (CHL), sea ice concentration (SIC), sea surface salinity (SSS), and spatial factor Geographical Offshore Linear Distance (GLD) were combined and input into the ISDM for simulating and predicting the spatial distribution of the habitat. The model results show that the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and True Skill Statistic (TSS) indices for all months exceed 0.9, with an average AUC of 0.997 and a TSS of 0.973, indicating extremely high accuracy of the model in habitat prediction. Further analysis of environmental factors reveals that Geographical Offshore Linear Distance (GLD) and chlorophyll concentration (CHL) are the main factors affecting habitat suitability, contributing 34.9% and 25.2%, respectively, and their combined contribution exceeds 60%. In addition, factors such as sea surface height (SSH), sea surface temperature (SST), sea ice concentration (SIC), and sea surface salinity (SSS) have impacts on the habitat distribution to varying degrees, and each factor exhibits different suitability response characteristics in different seasons and sub-regions. There is no significant correlation between the habitat area of Antarctic krill and catch (p > 0.05), while there is a significant positive correlation between the fishing duration and the catch (p < 0.001), indicating that a longer fishing duration can effectively increase the Antarctic krill catch. This study investigated the status of anchors for small fishing vessels that correspond with the risk factors of submarine cables, which are essential elements for offshore wind farms. As for target vessels, small coastal fishing vessels of less than ten tons were divided into four categories by tonnage, and 71 locations were compared from a total of 59 fishing vessels. In the results, the shank showed a difference of approximately 18.2% from 119.3 to 145.8 cm on average, while the stock exhibited a difference of approximately 18.9% from 130.3 to 160.6 cm. The size of the anchor, however, was not proportional to the increase in the tonnage of the fishing vessel, and the anchors were produced in their own forms, based on the experience of the crew in many cases. In the statistical processing results, significant differences occurred in all areas except for the fluke. The stock and shank, which affect the dragging anchor, showed significant differences at a level of p < 0.05 while the bill, bill to bill, and bill to shank exhibited differences at a level of p < 0.01. This indicates that standardized criteria are required for the anchors of small coastal fishing vessels of less than ten tons, and that design standards for materials and reinforcements also need to be prepared as thin rebars or wooden columns are used, in addition to steel pipes, as the materials of the stock in many cases. In the future, electricity generation through eco-friendly renewable energy will accelerate. Surrounded by sea on three sides, the Republic of Korea is gaining attention for offshore wind power as a future industry, leveraging advantages of its maritime environment. However, maritime navigation remains active in waters, with maritime transportation being crucial, as it accounts for over 95% of the country’s cargo volume. Therefore, ensuring the safety of vessel operations is vital when constructing offshore wind farms. This study proposed alternative routes to ensure the safety of vessels and secure existing routes in the waters of the southwestern sea, where intensive development of OWFs is expected. The routes were determined based on the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses (PIANC) Guidelines and Maritime Traffic Safety Act’s implementation guidelines. Clearance between a maritime route and OWF was set to the rule of 6 L + 0.3 NM + 500 m for safety. The route width was calculated while considering vessel maneuverability, environmental factors, seabed conditions, the depth-to-draft ratio, and two-way traffic. The alternative routes were categorized into four types—maritime highways, maritime provincial routes, approach routes for departure/arrival, and recommended routes based on vessel positions, engine status, and route function. By considering traffic flow and applying international and domestic standards, these routes will ensure safe, efficient, and orderly vessel operations. Full article

A LoRaWAN application architecture comprises three functional components: (i) nodes, which convert and wirelessly transmit data as LoRaWAN messages; (ii) gateways, which receive and forward these transmissions; and (iii) network servers, which process the received data for application delivery. The nodes convert data into LoRaWAN messages and transmit them wirelessly with the hope that one or more LoRaWAN gateway will receive the messages successfully. Then, the gateways pass on the received messages to a distant network server, where various processing steps occur before the messages are forwarded to the end application. If none of the gateways can receive the messages, then they will be lost. Although this default behaviour is suitable for some applications, there are others where ensuring messages are successfully delivered at a higher rate would be helpful. One such scenario is the application in this paper: monitoring maritime vessels and fishing equipment in offshore environments characterised by intermittent or absent shore connectivity. To address this challenge, the Custodian project was initiated to develop a maritime monitoring solution with enhanced connectivity capabilities. Two additional features are especially welcome in this scenario. The most important feature is the transmission of messages created in offshore areas to end users who are offshore, regardless of the unavailability of the ground network server. An example would be fishermen who are offshore and wish to position their fishing equipment, also offshore, based on location data transmitted from nodes via LoRaWAN, even when both entities are far away from the mainland. The second aspect concerns the potential use of gateway-to-gateway communications, through gateways on various ships, to transmit messages to the coast. This setup enables fishing gear and fishing vessels to be monitored from the coast, even in the absence of a direct connection. The functional constraints of conventional commercial gateways necessitated the conceptualisation and implementation of C-Mesh, a novel relay architecture that extends LoRaWAN functionality beyond standard protocol implementations. The C-Mesh integrates with the Custodian ecosystem, alongside C-Beacon and C-Point devices, while maintaining transparent compatibility with standard LoRaWAN infrastructure components through protocol-compliant gateway emulation. Thus, compatibility with both commercially available nodes and gateways and those already in deployment is guaranteed. We provide a comprehensive description of C-Mesh, describing its hardware architecture (communications, power, and self-monitoring abilities) and data processing ability (filtering duplicate messages, security, and encryption). Sea trials carried out on board a commercial fishing vessel in Sesimbra, Portugal, proved C-Mesh to be effective. Location messages derived from fishing gear left at sea were received by an end user aboard the fishing vessel, independently of the network server on land. Additionally, field tests demonstrated that a single C-Mesh deployment functioning as a signal repeater on a vessel with an antenna elevation of 15m above sea level achieved a quantifiable coverage extension of 13 km (representing a 20% increase in effective transmission range), demonstrating the capacity of C-Mesh to increase LoRaWAN’s coverage. With over 50,000 merchant vessels and nearly two million seafarers operating globally, more than 12,000 maritime incidents in the past decade underscore the urgent need for proactive safety measures to ensure the structural integrity of aging ships and safeguard the well-being of seafarers, who face harsh ocean environments in remote locations. The Digital Healthcare Engineering (DHE) framework offers a proactive solution to these challenges, comprising five interconnected modules: (1) real-time monitoring and measurement of health parameters, (2) transmission of collected data to land-based analytics centers, (3) data analytics and simulations leveraging digital twins, (4) AI-driven diagnostics and recommendations for remedial actions, and (5) predictive health analysis for optimal maintenance planning. This paper reviews the core technologies required to implement the DHE framework in real-world settings, with a specific focus on the well-being of seafarers and offshore workers, referred to as Human DHE (HDHE). Key technical challenges are identified, and practical solutions to address these challenges are proposed for each individual module. This paper also outlines future research directions to advance the development of an HDHE system, aiming to enhance the safety, health, and overall well-being of seafarers operating in demanding maritime environments. To facilitate both the installation and the removal of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), a novel tension-leg dual-module offshore wind turbine system has been proposed. This system primarily consists of a DTU 10 MW wind turbine (WT) module and a supporting tension-leg platform (TLP) module. Considering both mechanical and hydrodynamic coupling effects of the dual-module system, this study focuses on its dynamic responses during both the installation and the removal of the WT module under typical sea states. The effect of different installation vessel positions and key parameters of the clamping device on the dynamic response of the system during the WT module removal has been clarified. Based on the findings, preliminary recommendations are provided regarding the optimal positioning of the installation vessel and the optimal design parameters of the clamping device. Furthermore, an auxiliary sleeve has been proposed to facilitate the WT module removal. The results indicate that the application of the auxiliary sleeve can significantly improve the dynamic response of the system. The results of this study can serve as a reference for the design, installation, and removal of floating offshore wind turbines. Full article
