Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health in Nursing Students and Non-Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objective: Nursing and non-nursing students experience high stress levels, making them susceptible to mental health issues. This study compared stress, anxiety, and depression between these two groups after 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it explored the relationship between perceived helplessness, self-efficacy, and symptoms of mental stress and strain resulting from challenging internship conditions for nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 154 nursing students (mean age = 22.43 years) and 291 non-nursing students (mean age = 27.7 years). Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), and a questionnaire on mental stress and strain. Results: Nursing students reported significantly higher scores in the DASS-21 subscales depression (ηp2 = 0.016) and anxiety (ηp2 = 0.037), and global stress (PSS-10; ηp2 = 0.029) compared to non-nursing students, but no significant difference on the DASS-21 Stress subscale. The observed group differences in the present study may be partially attributed to group differences in demographic factors. Helplessness correlated strongly with nearly all scales of mental stress and strain during internships (all p’s < 0.001), while self-efficacy showed a strong negative correlation with non-occupational difficulties, health impairment, and emotional problems (all p’s < 0.001). Conclusions: Nursing students experience elevated depression, anxiety, and perceived stress levels compared to non-nursing students. Stronger feelings of helplessness and lower confidence in their ability to overcome challenges were strongly correlated with mental stress and strain during clinical training. Targeted interventions such as cognitive behavioral training and stress management should be integrated into nursing curricula to enhance resilience and coping strategies. Full article

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose significant risks to occupational populations engaged in poultry farming, livestock handling, and live poultry market operations due to frequent exposure to infected animals and contaminated environments. This review synthesizes evidence on AIV exposure patterns and risk factors through a comprehensive analysis of viral characteristics, host dynamics, environmental influences, and human behaviors. The main routes of transmission include direct animal contact, respiratory contact during slaughter/milking, and environmental contamination (aerosols, raw milk, shared equipment). Risks increase as the virus adapts between species, survives longer in cold/wet conditions, and spreads through wild bird migration (long-distance transmission) and live bird trade (local transmission). Recommended control measures include integrated animal–human–environment surveillance, stringent biosecurity measures, vaccination, and education. These findings underscore the urgent need for global ‘One Health’ collaboration to assess risk and implement preventive measures against potentially pandemic strains of influenza A viruses, especially in light of undetected mild/asymptomatic cases and incomplete knowledge of viral evolution. Brucellosis remains endemic in Tunisia, causing abortions in small ruminants, and represents a public health threat through occupational exposure and the consumption of contaminated animal products. The aims of this study are to assess the antibiotic susceptibility of two Brucella melitensis isolates (TATA and SBZ) from aborted sheep, to analyze their genomes using hybrid whole-genome sequencing, and to investigate their antimicrobial resistance (AMR), potential virulence factors (VFs), and phylogenetic relationships. Both isolates were phenotypically confirmed to be susceptible to doxycycline, gentamicin, rifampicin, streptomycin, and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, and no corresponding classical AMR genes were identified. However, several potential AMR-related genes (mprF, bepCDEFG, qacG, and adeF) and a mutation in the parC gene were detected. The analysis of the genotypes revealed 74 potential virulence genes, primarily involved in lipopolysaccharide synthesis and type IV secretion systems. Genomic comparison showed over 99% nucleotide identity between the Tunisian strains, B. melitensis bv. 1 16M and B. melitensis bv. 3 Ether. Five gene clusters, including three hypothetical proteins with 100% identity, were detected exclusively in the TATA and SBZ strains. Additionally, two unique gene clusters were identified in SBZ: a rhodocoxin reductase and another hypothetical protein. Both isolates were assigned to sequence types ST11 and ST89. Core-genome-based phylogenetic analysis clustered both strains with biovar 3 and ordered the Tunisian strains into two distinct groups: TATA within Tunisian Cluster 1 is closely related to strains from Egypt and Italy, while SBZ near MST Cluster 4 is more related to isolates from Austria and two outliers from Italy and Tunisia. This study provides the first genomic characterization of B. melitensis from aborted sheep in Tunisia and offers valuable insights into AMR, virulence, and phylogenetic distribution. Full article

The efficient management of urban parking systems has emerged as a pivotal issue in today’s smart cities, where increasing vehicle populations strain limited parking infrastructure and challenge sustainable urban mobility. Aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the strategic goals of smart city planning, this study presents a sustainability-driven, multiagent simulation-based framework to model, analyze, and optimize smart parking dynamics in congested urban settings. The system architecture integrates ground-level IoT sensors installed in parking spaces, enabling real-time occupancy detection and communication with a centralized system using low-power wide-area communication protocols (LPWAN). This study introduces an intelligent parking guidance mechanism that dynamically directs drivers to the nearest available slots based on location, historical traffic flow, and predicted availability. To manage real-time data flow, the framework incorporates message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocols and edge processing units for low-latency updates. A predictive algorithm, combining spatial data, usage patterns, and time-series forecasting, supports decision-making for future slot allocation and dynamic pricing policies. Field simulations, calibrated with sensor data in a representative high-density urban district, assess system performance under peak and off-peak conditions. A comparative evaluation against traditional first-come-first-served and static parking systems highlights significant gains: average parking search time is reduced by 42%, vehicular congestion near parking zones declines by 35%, and emissions from circling vehicles drop by 27%. The system also improves user satisfaction by enabling mobile app-based reservation and payment options. These findings contribute to broader sustainability goals by supporting efficient land use, reducing environmental impacts, and enhancing urban livability—key dimensions emphasized in sustainable smart city strategies. The proposed framework offers a scalable, interdisciplinary solution for urban planners and policymakers striving to design inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible urban mobility systems. Background: Occupational burnout and fatigue are critical issues affecting the health and performance of healthcare workers (HCWs) globally. These outcomes are often driven by complex and overlapping work-related stressors, which remain insufficiently understood in combination. Objective: To investigate the associations of multiple work-related stressors with occupational burnout and fatigue, and to identify distinct stress patterns and critical stressors among HCWs. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-administered electronic questionnaire among 2695 HCWs in Shanghai, China. Validated questionnaire scales were used to assess work-related stress (self-developed occupational stress scale for medical staff, CSSM), occupational burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey, MBI-GS), and fatigue (Fatigue Scale-14, FS-14). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to identify distinct work-related stress patterns. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to explore the associations between individual stressors, stress patterns, and occupational burnout and fatigue. Additionally, weighted quantile sum (WQS) models were utilized to evaluate the combined effects of multiple stressors and identify the main contributors. Results: In this study, 77.0% and 71.2% of participants were classified as experiencing occupational burnout and fatigue, respectively. A strained doctor–patient relationship was the highest-rated work-related stressor. All work-related stressors, including career development, interpersonal relationships, work–life imbalance, physical environment, doctor–patient relationship, social environment, and workload, were significantly associated with burnout (β: 0.444~0.956, p < 0.001) and fatigue (β: 1.384~3.404, p < 0.001). WQS assigned higher weights to career development and workload for burnout, and to workload and work–life imbalance for fatigue. LPA identified two distinct occupational stress patterns. HCWs characterized by higher stress levels in physical environment, career development, workload, and interpersonal relationships exhibited significantly higher burnout scores (β = 0.325, 95% CI: 0.122, 0.528), particularly in the reduced personal accomplishment (PA) dimension (β = 1.003, 95% CI: 0.746, 1.259). Conclusions: This study highlighted the high prevalence of occupational burnout and fatigue among HCWs in Shanghai, China. Occupational stressors were associated with both burnout and fatigue, with higher workload, work–life imbalance, and poorer career development showing particularly significant contributions. These findings emphasized the urgent need for targeted interventions, including workload management, career development programs, and mental health support, to reduce occupational stress and mitigate its adverse effects on HCWs. Aiming at the problems of serious pavement temperature diseases, low efficiency and high loss of ice-breaking methods, high occupancy rate of waste tires and the low utilization rate and insufficient durability of rubber particles, this paper aims to improve the service level of roads and ensure the safety of winter pavements. A pavement material with high efficiency, low carbon and environmental friendliness for active snow melting and ice breaking is developed. Firstly, NaOH, NaClO and KH550 were used to optimize the treatment of rubber particles. The hydrophilic properties, surface morphology and phase composition of rubber particles before and after optimization were studied, and the optimal treatment method of rubber particles was determined. Then, the optimized rubber particles were used to replace the natural aggregate in the polyurethane gel mixture by the volume substitution method, and the optimum polyurethane gel dosages and molding and curing processes were determined. Finally, the influence law of the road performance of RPGM was compared and analyzed by means of an indoor test, and the ice-breaking effect of RPGM was explored. The results showed that the contact angles of rubber particles treated with three solutions were reduced by 22.5%, 30.2% and 36.7%, respectively. The surface energy was improved, the element types on the surface of rubber particles were reduced and the surface impurities were effectively removed. Among them, the improvement effect of the KH550 solution was the most significant. With the increase in rubber particle content from 0% to 15%, the dynamic stability of the mixture gradually increases, with a maximum increase of 23.5%. The maximum bending strain increases with the increase in its content. The residual stability increases first and then decreases with the increase in rubber particle content, and the increase ranges are 1.4%, 3.3% and 0.5%, respectively. The anti-scattering performance increases with the increase in rubber content, and an excessive amount will lead to an increase in the scattering loss rate, but it can still be maintained below 5%. The fatigue life of polyurethane gel mixtures with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% rubber particles is 2.9 times, 3.8 times, 4.3 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the AC-13 asphalt mixture, respectively, showing excellent anti-fatigue performance. The friction coefficient of the mixture increases with an increase in the rubber particle content, which can be increased by 22.3% compared with the ordinary asphalt mixture. RPGM shows better de-icing performance than traditional asphalt mixtures, and with an increase in rubber particle content, the ice-breaking ability is effectively improved. When the thickness of the ice layer exceeds 9 mm, the ice-breaking ability of the mixture is significantly weakened. Mainly through the synergistic effect of stress coupling, thermal effect and interface failure, the bonding performance of the ice–pavement interface is weakened under the action of driving load cycle, and the ice layer is loosened, broken and peeled off, achieving efficient de-icing. This article aims to identify the social groups particularly vulnerable to pandemic-related stress in the urban environment. The research seeks answers to questions regarding the following: (1) the demographic and socio-economic features of vulnerable groups and (2) their location in the city space. The main research tool was a geosurvey in which respondents determined the stress level experienced. The area of investigation covered three Polish cities. The results obtained were devised using statistical analysis methods. They make it possible to state that the features most differentiating stress level were sex, age, occupational activity, and profession practised. Women, persons aged 60+, economically inactive people (pensioners and unemployed people), and those practising certain professions, especially representing the tourism sector, were the groups most vulnerable to stress. The areas concentrating vulnerable groups were mainly centres of compact development. We assume that this knowledge will allow for improving public health conditions in cities, strained by the COVID-19 pandemic, preparing strategies for adaptation to threats such as a pandemic, with regard to planning and city governance, and, thus, increasing city stress resilience and preparing better for further similar risks. The cases that dog trainers and behavior consultants face are often traumatic and emotionally challenging, especially under pressure from distressed clients. This study investigated whether more years of professional experience and higher levels of dog aggression contribute to burnout and whether the overall emotional toll of caring moderates these relationships. Eighty-six professionals completed the Professional Quality of Life Measure, which evaluates the positive aspects of caregiving and negative outcomes such as burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The analysis revealed that neither extended work experience nor increased dog aggression significantly predicted higher burnout levels, and the anticipated moderating effect of emotional strain was not observed. The levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress in this sample were similar to those reported in other animal-care and human healthcare settings, while the satisfaction derived from caregiving remained relatively high. These results suggest that factors beyond years of experience and dog aggression—such as workplace support and individual coping mechanisms—may be more crucial in influencing burnout among these professionals. This study highlights the need for an expanded investigation of other possible influences, such as workplace support and personal coping mechanisms. Identifying specific challenges that dog trainers face and implementing strategies to offset burnout will create a healthier and more sustainable work environment and improve the quality of life for humans and their canine companions. Public safety personnel (PSP) are known to experience difficult and demanding occupational environments, which were further complicated by the COVID-19 crisis. While public safety research typically focuses on the impact of operational stressors on PSP functioning and wellbeing, relatively less is known about the types and impacts of organizational stressors and how all these affect social wellbeing during the pandemic. The current study surveyed Canadian firefighters (n = 123), paramedics (n = 246), and public safety communicators (n = 48) that continued to serve the public over the course of the pandemic. Participants responded to two open-ended survey questions about how COVID-19 affected their lives at work and home. Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, responses were coded to identify emergent, data-driven themes while drawing on existing theory for analysis. Across occupational groups, qualitative analyses revealed that the public safety measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated existing operational and organizational strains, including increased exposure to distressing calls, absenteeism and coping with alcohol, and a lack of support from management. Participants also identified financial strain and housing insecurity as stressors, as well as frustration and helplessness at others’ non-compliance with public health advisories and protocols. Communication surrounding the rationale behind government decision-making, the efficacy of serology tests, and rates of infection were also identified. Together, these findings offer a nuanced understanding of the interplay among operational, organizational, and social stressors experienced by Canadian PSP during the COVID-19 pandemic, illuminating their impact on mental health and wellbeing, and identifying targeted areas of focus for future planning and meaningful intervention to support PSP wellness. Artificial intelligence, the simulation of human intelligence by computers and machines, has found its way into healthcare, helping surgeons, doctors, radiologists, and many more. However, over 80% of healthcare professionals consists of people working in allied health professions such as nurses, physiotherapists, and midwives. Considering the aging of the general population around the world, the workforce shortages in these occupations are especially crucial. As the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated, globally, most healthcare systems are strained, and there is a consensus that current healthcare systems are not sustainable with the increasing challenges. AI is often viewed as one of the potential solutions for not only reducing the strain on the healthcare workforce, but also to sustain the current workforce. Still, most AI applications are being developed for the medical community and often allied health is overlooked or not even considered despite comprising a large proportion of the total workforce. In addition, the interest of the private sector to invest specifically in the allied health workforce is low since the financial incentive is low. This paper provides examples of AI solutions for seven important allied health professions. To increase the uptake of AI solutions in allied healthcare, AI companies need to connect more with professional associations and be as patient-oriented as many claim to be. There also needs to be more AI schooling for allied healthcare professionals to increase adoption of these AI solutions. Full article

Passive back-support exoskeletons commonly employ elastic components to assist users during dynamic tasks. However, these designs are ineffective in providing sustained assistance for prolonged static bending postures, such as those required in surgery, assembly, and farming, where users experience continuous lumbar flexion. To address this limitation, a novel passive back-support exoskeleton inspired by the human spine is proposed in this work. The exoskeleton integrates a five-bar linkage mechanism with vertebrae-mimicking units, allowing for both dynamic flexion–extension movements and rigid support at various flexion angles. During the experiments, subjects are instructed to perform a 30-min forward-bending assembly task under two conditions: with and without wearing the exoskeleton. Compared to the free condition, the electromyography results indicate a 10.1% reduction in integrated EMG (IEMG) and a 9.78% decrease in root mean square (RMS) values of the erector spinae with the exoskeleton. Meanwhile, the metabolic rate is decreased by 11.1%, highlighting the effectiveness of the exoskeleton in mitigating muscle fatigue during prolonged static work. Molecular Epidemiology of Coxiella burnetii in Boer Goats and Their Farm Environment in South Korea with a One Health Approach

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease that poses significant risks to both livestock productivity and human health. This is the first molecular and epidemiological study of C. burnetii infections on a Boer goat farm in South Korea, encompassing clinical cases in animals and humans, as well as environmental contamination. The investigation was initiated following abortion cases at a farm that co-raised Boer goats and cattle. Samples—including vaginal swabs, aborted fetuses, blood, tissues, feces, dust, and soil—were tested using PCR, confirming C. burnetii infection from multiple sources. Genotyping through Multiple Locus Variable Number Tandem Repeat Analysis and Multispacer Sequence Typing revealed molecular epidemiological links between farm-detected strains and those previously identified in human cases from South Korea, France, and the UK, suggesting possible zoonotic transmission. C. burnetii was also found in dust, soil, feces, and in farmworkers, indicating ongoing environmental and occupational exposure. These findings emphasize the role of environmental contamination in disease persistence and the need for improved biosecurity and coordinated surveillance. This study supports a One Health approach and offers meaningful implications for public health policy, particularly in establishing effective strategies for monitoring and controlling Q fever in livestock farms and surrounding communities. Timber–concrete composite (TCC) floors are gaining popularity in sustainable construction due to their enhanced stiffness and structural efficiency. However, excessive vibrations, particularly those induced by human activity, pose significant challenges to occupant comfort and structural integrity. This study investigates the application of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) to mitigate vibrations in TCC floors, with a focus on enhancing damping performance through the incorporation of pre-strained Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) (Kellogg’s Research Labs, New Boston, NH, USA). A novel pre-strained SMA–TMD system was designed and experimentally tested to evaluate its effectiveness in vibration control under various loading conditions. The results demonstrate that pre-straining significantly increases the damping ratio of the SMA–TMD, improving its vibration mitigation capability. Compared to non-pre-strained SMA–TMD, the pre-strained SMA–TMD system exhibited superior adaptability and robustness in reducing floor vibrations, achieving a peak acceleration reduction of up to 49.91%. These findings provide valuable knowledge into the development of advanced damping solutions for timber floors, contributing to the broader application of vibration control strategies in sustainable and high-performance building systems. (1) Background: The meatpacking industry in Brazil is vital for economic growth. It poses significant occupational health risks, particularly Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). The present study analyzes the profile of slaughterhouse workers based on the governmental notification database. (2) Methods: The socio-demographic dataset (n = 820) was filled with worker data, and health profiles reported Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) and WMSDs from 2007 to 2019, available online by the Brazilian Health Service. The dataset was analyzed to identify patterns of injuries and contributing factors. Descriptive statistics outlined worker characteristics, while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) explored associations between variables. (3) Results: The results revealed that 51.34% of workers were male, with most aged 30–45. Repetitive movements were reported by 89.63% of respondents, while 78.90% worked shifts exceeding six hours. Soft tissue disorders were the most prevalent diagnosis (40.97%). The majority (53.17%) experienced temporary disabilities, and 5.73% had permanent impairments. Key risk factors included inadequate breaks, stressful environments, and limited ergonomic adaptations. This study highlights the critical need for preventative measures, such as ergonomic interventions, adequate rest breaks, and employee education, to mitigate WMSDs. Future research should include ergonomic evaluations and consider broader organizational variables to enhance slaughterhouse occupational health and safety. Addressing these challenges is essential for improving worker welfare and maintaining industry productivity. Full article

Background/Objectives: COVID-19 has impacted Romania’s healthcare, economy, society, and public health. This study aims to evaluate the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania by analyzing both hospital costs and key elements of economic costs. The assessment was conducted from the perspective of the national payer. Hospital costs were analyzed covering two distinct timeframes: Q4 2020–Q3 2021 and Q1 2022–Q4 2022. The estimation of economic costs covered Q4 2020–Q3 2021. Methods: Hospital care costs were estimated using financial data from eight hospitals. The costs were extrapolated to inpatient data from 60 public hospitals for each of the two study periods. The disease burden was determined based on official data, including the number of confirmed cases, hospital bed occupancy, reported fatalities, and various cost components from an economic perspective. Results: The findings indicate that the average hospital cost per patient episode was EUR 2267 (95% CI: 2137–2396) during the first period and EUR 2003 (95% CI: 1799–2207) in the second. The total national hospitalization expenses amounted to EUR 1.35 billion and EUR 730 million, respectively. When accounting for productivity losses and testing costs, the overall expenditure reached EUR 5.39 billion for Q4 2020–Q3 2021. Conclusions: In conclusion, the total economic burden of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania by the end of 2021 was estimated at EUR 5.39 billion, encompassing hospitalization, isolation, premature deaths, quarantine, testing, and parental allowances. Despite the emergence of costlier treatment options, overall treatment costs declined, possibly due to increased vaccination rates. The study highlights the significant financial strain on the healthcare system and underscores the importance of evidence-based resource allocation to better manage future public health crises.
