Patterns in Root Phenology of Woody Plants Across Climate Regions: Drivers, Constraints, and Ecosystem Implications

Root phenology significantly influences ecosystem processes yet remains poorly characterized across biomes. This study synthesized data from 59 studies spanning Arctic to tropical ecosystems to identify woody plants root phenological patterns and their environmental drivers. The analysis revealed distinct climate-specific patterns. Arctic regions had a short growing season with remarkably low temperature threshold for initiation of root growth (0.5–1 °C). Temperate forests displayed pronounced spring-summer growth patterns with root growth initiation occurring at 1–9 °C. Mediterranean ecosystems showed bimodal patterns optimized around moisture availability, and tropical regions demonstrate seasonality primarily driven by precipitation. Root-shoot coordination varies predictably across biomes, with humid continental ecosystems showing the highest synchronous above- and belowground activity (57%), temperate regions exhibiting leaf-before-root emergence (55%), and Mediterranean regions consistently showing root-before-leaf patterns (100%). Winter root growth is more widespread than previously recognized (35% of studies), primarily in tropical and Mediterranean regions. Temperature thresholds for phenological transitions vary with climate region, suggesting adaptations to environmental conditions. These findings provide a critical, region-specific framework for improving models of terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change. While our synthesis clarifies distinct phenological strategies, its conclusions are drawn from data focused primarily on Northern Hemisphere woody plants, highlighting significant geographic gaps in our current understanding. Bridging these knowledge gaps is essential for accurately forecasting how belowground dynamics will influence global carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem resilience under changing climatic regimes. Fungi, from saprophytes to pathogens, face predictable daily fluctuations in light, temperature, humidity, and nutrient availability. To cope, they have evolved an internal circadian clock that confers a major adaptive advantage. This review critically synthesizes current knowledge on the molecular architecture and physiological relevance of fungal circadian systems, moving beyond the canonical Neurospora crassa model to explore the broader phylogenetic diversity of timekeeping mechanisms. We examine the core transcription-translation feedback loop (TTFL) centered on the FREQUENCY/WHITE COLLAR (FRQ/WCC) system and contrast it with divergent and non-canonical oscillators, including the metabolic rhythms of yeasts and the universally conserved peroxiredoxin (PRX) oxidation cycles. A central theme is the clock’s role in gating cellular defenses against oxidative, osmotic, and nutritional stress, enabling fungi to anticipate and withstand environmental insults through proactive regulation. We provide a detailed analysis of chrono-pathogenesis, where the circadian control of virulence factors aligns fungal attacks with windows of host vulnerability, with a focus on experimental evidence from pathogens like Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, and Magnaporthe oryzae. The review explores the downstream pathways—including transcriptional cascades, post-translational modifications, and epigenetic regulation—that translate temporal signals into physiological outputs such as developmental rhythms in conidiation and hyphal branching. Finally, we highlight critical knowledge gaps, particularly in understudied phyla like Basidiomycota, and discuss future research directions. This includes the exploration of novel clock architectures and the emerging, though speculative, hypothesis of “chrono-therapeutics”—interventions designed to disrupt fungal clocks—as a forward-looking concept for managing fungal infections. Methodology-Dependent Reversals in Root Decomposition: Divergent Regulation by Forest Gap and Root Order in Pinus massoniana

Understanding root decomposition dynamics is essential to address declining carbon sequestration and nutrient imbalances in monoculture plantations. This study elucidates how forest gaps regulate Pinus massoniana root decomposition through comparative methodological analysis, providing theoretical foundations for near-natural forest management and carbon–nitrogen cycle optimization in plantations. The results showed the following: (1) Root decomposition was significantly accelerated by the in situ soil litterbag method (ISLM) versus the traditional litterbag method (LM) (decomposition rate (k) = 0.459 vs. 0.188), reducing the 95% decomposition time (T0.95) by nearly nine years (6.53 years vs. 15.95 years). ISLM concurrently elevated the root potassium concentration and reconfigured the relationships between root decomposition and soil nutrients. (2) Lower-order roots (orders 1–3) decomposed significantly faster than higher-order roots (orders 4–5) (k = 0.455 vs. 0.193). This disparity was amplified under ISLM (lower-/higher-order root k ratio = 4.1) but diminished or reversed under LM (lower-/higher-order root k ratio = 0.8). (3) Forest gaps regulated decomposition through temporal phase interactions, accelerating decomposition initially (0–360 days) while inhibiting it later (360–720 days), particularly for higher-order roots. Notably, forest gap effects fundamentally reversed between methodologies (slight promotion under LM vs. significant inhibition under ISLM). Our study reveals that conventional LM may obscure genuine ecological interactions during root decomposition, confirms lower-order roots as rapid nutrient-cycling pathways, provides crucial methodological corrections for plantation nutrient models, and advances theoretical foundations for precision management of P. massoniana plantations. Introduction: Breakfast has emerged as a critical factor in preventing cardiovascular diseases, driven not only by its nutritional content but also by its alignment with circadian rhythms. However, gaps remain in the literature regarding its clinical impact and thematic evolution. Objective: To characterize the global scientific output on the relationship between breakfast quality and cardiovascular health through a systematic bibliometric analysis. Methodology: The PRISMA 2020 protocol was applied to select 1436 original articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (1957–2025). Bibliometric tools, including R (v4.4.2) and VOSviewer (v1.6.19) were used to map productivity, impact, collaboration networks, and emerging thematic areas. Results: Scientific output has grown exponentially since 2000. The most influential journals are the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nutrients, and Diabetes Care. The United States, United Kingdom, and Japan lead in publication volume and citations, with increasing participation from Latin American countries. Thematic trends have shifted from traditional clinical markers to innovative approaches such as chrononutrition, digital health, and personalized nutrition. However, methodological gaps persist, including a predominance of observational studies and an underrepresentation of vulnerable populations. Conclusions: Breakfast is a dietary practice with profound implications for cardiometabolic health. This study provides a comprehensive overview of scientific literature, highlighting both advancements and challenges. Strengthening international collaboration networks, standardizing definitions of a healthy breakfast, and promoting evidence-based interventions in school, clinical, and community settings are recommended. Global marine coastal aquaculture increased by 6.7 million tons in 2024, with whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) dominating crustacean production. However, reliance on a single species raises sustainability concerns, particularly in the face of climate change. Diversifying shrimp farming by cultivating native species, such as the European brown shrimp (Crangon crangon), presents an opportunity to develop a sustainable blue bioeconomy in Europe. C. crangon holds significant commercial value, yet overexploitation has led to population declines. Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) offers a viable solution by utilizing fish farm wastewater as a nutrient source, reducing both costs and environmental impact. Research efforts in Germany and other European nations are exploring IMTA’s potential by co-culturing shrimp with species like sea bream, sea bass, and salmon. The physiological adaptability and omnivorous diet of C. crangon further support its viability in aquaculture. However, critical knowledge gaps remain regarding its lipid metabolism, early ontogeny, and reproductive biology—factors essential for optimizing captive breeding. Future interdisciplinary research should refine larval culture techniques and develop sustainable co-culture models. Expanding C. crangon aquaculture aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by enhancing food security, ecosystem resilience, and economic stability while reducing Europe’s reliance on seafood imports. The role of rhizosphere bacteria in facilitating plant invasion is increasingly acknowledged, yet the influence of specific microbial functional traits remains insufficiently understood. This study addresses this gap by isolating two bacterial strains, Bacillus sp. ScRB44 and Pseudomonas sp. ScRB22, from the rhizosphere of the invasive weed Solidago canadensis. We assessed their nitrogen utilization capacity and indoleacetic acid (IAA) production capabilities to evaluate their ecological functions. Our three-stage experimental design encompassed strain promotion, nutrient stress, and competition phases. Bacillus sp. ScRB44 demonstrated robust IAA production and significantly improved the nitrogen utilization efficiency, significantly enhancing S. canadensis growth, especially under nutrient-poor conditions, and promoting a shift in biomass allocation toward the roots, thereby conferring a competitive advantage over native species. Conversely, Pseudomonas sp. ScRB22 exhibited limited functional activity and a negligible impact on plant performance. These findings underscore that the ecological impact of rhizosphere bacteria on invasive weeds is closely linked to their specific growth-promoting functions. By enhancing stress adaptation and optimizing resource allocation, certain microorganisms may facilitate the establishment of invasive weeds in adverse environments. This study highlights the significance of microbial functional traits in invasion ecology and suggests novel approaches for microbiome-based invasive weed management, with potential applications in agricultural soil health improvement and ecological restoration. Soil nematodes are essential components of the soil food web and are widely recognised as key bioindicators of soil health because of their sensitivity to environmental factors and disturbance. In agriculture, many studies have documented the effects of fertilisation on nematode communities and explored their role in nutrient cycling. Despite this, a key gap in knowledge still exists regarding how fertilisation-induced changes in nematode communities modify their role in nutrient cycling. We reviewed the literature on the mechanisms by which nematodes contribute to nutrient cycling and on how organic, inorganic, and recycling-derived fertilisers (RDFs) impact nematode communities. The literature revealed that the type of organic matter and its C:N ratio are key factors shaping nematode communities in organically fertilised soils. In contrast, soil acidification and ammonium suppression have a greater influence in inorganically fertilised soils. The key sources of variability across studies include differences in the amount of fertiliser applied, the duration of the fertiliser use, management practices, and context-specific factors, all of which led to differences in how nematode communities respond to both fertilisation regimes. The influence of RDFs on nematode communities is largely determined by the fertiliser’s origin and its chemical composition. While fertilisation-induced changes in nematode communities affect their role in nutrient cycling, oversimplifying experiments makes it difficult to understand nematodes’ functions in these processes. The challenges and knowledge gaps for further research to understand the effects of fertilisation on soil nematodes and their impact on nutrient cycling have been highlighted in this review to inform sustainable agricultural practices. This study addresses the understanding of fungal diversity and their bioremediation roles in an integrated aquaculture wastewater bioremediation system, an area less explored compared to bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Despite the rapid advancement and affordability of molecular tools, insights into fungal communities remain vague, and interpreting environmental studies in an ecologically meaningful manner continues to pose challenges. To bridge this knowledge gap, we developed an integrated aquaculture wastewater bioremediation system, incorporating photosynthetic bacteria, and utilizing internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing to analyze fungal community composition. Our findings indicate that the fungal community in aquaculture wastewater is predominantly composed of the phyla Ascomycota and Chytridiomycota, with dominant genera including Aspergillus, Hortea, and Ciliphora. FUNGuild, a user-friendly trait and character database operating at the genus level, facilitated the ecological interpretation of fungal functional groups. The analysis revealed significant negative correlations between nutrient levels (CODmn, NH4+-N, NO3-N, NO2-N, and PO4−3-P) and specific fungal functional groups, including epiphytes, animal pathogens, dung saprotrophs, plant pathogens, and ectomycorrhizal fungi. The removal rate for the CODmn, NH4+-N, NO3-N, NO2-N, and PO4−3-P were 71.42, 91.37, 88.80, 87.20, and 91.72% respectively. This study highlights the potential role of fungal communities in bioremediation processes and provides a framework for further ecological interpretation in aquaculture wastewater treatment systems. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens (WA, USA) presented a unique opportunity to observe primary succession in a post-eruption landscape previously dominated by conifer forests. The eruption scoured soil and biological communities adjacent to the mountain, and species of conifers have generally been slow to colonize the nutrient-poor substrate surrounding the volcano. Further, different species of conifer establish and grow at different rates. The recent advancement of conifers in the post-eruption landscape has highlighted a research gap related to conifer growth patterns. We measured the height, age, and incremental growth of 472 trees representing three common conifers, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Abies procera, and Pinus contorta, on debris avalanche (80 sites) and pyroclastic flow (82 sites) disturbance zones of the 1980 eruption. We paired annual incremental growth with recent climate data. We found that height, age, and growth rates differ among species and sites. All species had higher growth rates on the debris avalanche deposit compared to the pyroclastic flow due to either climate or substrate. Climate influences were mixed, where one species increased growth with temperature, another declined, and another was unrelated. Nevertheless, more than 40 years after the eruption, we find rapid height growth in species with implications for future forests. Full article

Plant functional traits serve as vital tools for understanding vegetation adaptation mechanisms in changing environments. As the primary organs for nutrient acquisition from soil, fine roots are highly sensitive to environmental variations. However, current research on fine-root adaptation strategies predominantly focuses on tropical, subtropical, and temperate forests, leaving a significant gap in comprehensive knowledge regarding fine-root responses in rocky-desertification habitats. This study investigates the fine roots of Pseudotsuga sinensis across varying degrees of rocky desertification (mild, moderate, severe, and extremely severe). By analyzing fine-root morphological and nutrient traits, we aim to elucidate the trait differences and correlations under different desertification intensities. The results indicate that root dry matter content increases significantly with escalating desertification severity. Fine roots in mild and extremely severe desertification exhibit notably higher root C, K, and Mg concentrations compared to those in moderate and severe desertification, while root Ca concentration shows an inverse trend. Our correlation analyses reveal a highly significant positive relationship between specific root length and specific root area, whereas root dry matter content demonstrates a significant negative correlation with elemental concentrations. The principal component analysis (PCA) further indicates that the trait associations adopted by the forest in mild- and extremely severe-desertification environments are different from those in moderate- and severe-desertification environments. This study did not account for soil nutrient dynamics, microbial diversity, or enzymatic activity—key factors influencing fine-root adaptation. Future research should integrate root traits with soil properties to holistically assess resource strategies in rocky-desertification ecosystems. This study can serve as a theoretical reference for research on root characteristics and adaptation strategies of plants in rocky-desertification habitats. Full article

Sourdough fermentation, driven by the biochemical activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), presents a scientifically promising approach to addressing nutritional limitations in cereal-based staples. This review critically examines both the underlying mechanisms by which LAB enhance the nutritional profile of sourdough and the translational challenges in realizing these benefits. Key improvements explored include enhanced mineral bioavailability (e.g., up to 90% phytate reduction), improved protein digestibility, an attenuated glycemic response (GI ≈ 54 vs. ≈75 for conventional bread), and the generation of bioactive compounds. While in vitro and animal studies extensively demonstrate LAB’s potential to reshape nutrient profiles (e.g., phytate hydrolysis improving iron absorption, proteolysis releasing bioactive peptides), translating these effects into consistent human health outcomes proves complex. Significant challenges hinder this transition from laboratory to diet, including the limited bioavailability of LAB-derived metabolites, high strain variability, and sensitivity to fermentation conditions. Furthermore, interactions with the food matrix and host-specific factors, such as gut microbiota composition, contribute to inconsistent findings. This review highlights methodological gaps, particularly reliance on in vitro or animal models, and the lack of long-term, effective human trials. Although LAB hold significant promise for nutritional improvements in sourdough, translating these findings to validated human benefits necessitates continued efforts in mechanism-driven strain optimization, the standardization of fermentation processes, and rigorous human studies. The gastrointestinal tract mediates the absorption of nutrients from the diet, which is increasingly contaminated with toxic metal(loid) species (TMs) and thus threatens food safety. Evidence in support of the influx of TMs into the bloodstream of the general and vulnerable populations (babies, children, pregnant women, and industrial workers) has been obtained by accurately quantifying their blood concentrations. The interpretation of these TM blood concentrations, however, is problematic, as we cannot distinguish between those that are tolerable from those that may cause the onset of environmental diseases. Since TMs that have invaded the bloodstream may perturb biochemical processes therein that will eventually cause organ damage it is crucial to better understand their bioinorganic chemistry as these processes collectively determine their organ availability. Thus, bioinorganic processes of TMs in the bloodstream represent selectivity filters which protect organs from their influx and ultimately determine the corresponding exposure-response relationships. The need to better understand selectivity filters prompted us to mechanistically disentangle them into the major bioinorganic chemistry processes. It is argued that the detoxification of TMs in the bloodstream and the biomolecular mechanisms, which mediate their uptake into target organs, represent critical knowledge gaps to revise regulatory frameworks to reduce the disease burden. Characteristics of Food Industry Wastewaters and Their Potential Application in Biotechnological Production

The food industry consumes large amounts of water across various processes, and generates wastewater characterized by parameters like biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, pH, suspended solids, and nutrients. To meet environmental standards and enable reuse or valorization, treatment methods such as physicochemical, biological, and membrane-based processes are applied. This review focuses on the valorization of food industry wastewater in the biotechnological production of high-value products, with an emphasis on starch-rich wastewater, wineries and confectionery industry wastewater, and with a focus on new technologies for reduces environmental burden but also supports circular economy principles. Starch-rich wastewaters, particularly those generated by the potato processing industry, offer considerable potential for biotechnological valorization due to their high content of soluble starch, proteins, organic acids, minerals, and lipids. These effluents can be efficiently converted by various fungi (e.g., Aspergillus, Trichoderma) and yeasts (e.g., Rhodotorula, Candida) into value-added products such as lipids for biodiesel, organic acids, microbial proteins, carotenoids, and biofungicides. Similarly, winery wastewaters, characterized by elevated concentrations of sugars and polyphenols, have been successfully utilized as medium for microbial cultivation and product synthesis. Microorganisms belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Chlorella, Klebsiella, and Xanthomonas have demonstrated the ability to transform these effluents into biofuels, microbial biomass, biopolymers, and proteins, contributing to sustainable bioprocess development. Additionally, wastewater from the confectionery industry, rich in sugars, proteins, and lipids, serves as a favorable fermentation medium for the production of xanthan gum, bioethanol, biopesticides, and bioplastics (e.g., PHA and PHB). Microorganisms of the genera Xanthomonas, Bacillus, Zymomonas, and Cupriavidus are commonly employed in these processes. Although there are still certain regulatory issues, research gaps, and the need for more detailed economic analysis and kinetics of such production, we can conclude that this type of biotechnological production on waste streams has great potential, contributing to environmental sustainability and advancing the principles of the circular economy. Air pollution acts as a pervasive oxidative stressor, disrupting global crop production and ecosystem health through the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hazardous pollutants impair critical physiological processes—photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient uptake—triggering oxidative damage and yield losses. This review synthesizes current knowledge on plant defense mechanisms, emphasizing the integration of enzymatic (SOD, POD, CAT, APX, GPX, GR) and non-enzymatic (polyphenols, glutathione, ascorbate, phytochelatins) antioxidant systems to scavenge ROS and maintain redox homeostasis. We highlight the pivotal roles of transcription factors (MYB, WRKY, NAC) in orchestrating stress-responsive gene networks, alongside MAPK and phytohormone signaling (salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene), in mitigating oxidative stress. Secondary metabolites (flavonoids, lignin, terpenoids) are examined as biochemical shields against ROS and pollutant toxicity, with evidence from transcriptomic and metabolomic studies revealing their biosynthetic regulation. Furthermore, we explore biotechnological strategies to enhance antioxidant capacity, including overexpression of ROS-scavenging genes (e.g., TaCAT3) and engineering of phenolic pathways. By addressing gaps in understanding combined stress responses, this review provides a roadmap for developing resilient crops through antioxidant-focused interventions, ensuring sustainability in polluted environments. Cassava is the sixth most important food crop and is cultivated in more than 100 countries. The crop tolerates low soil fertility and drought, enabling it to play a role in climate adaptation strategies. Cassava generally requires careful preparation to remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) before its consumption, but HCN concentrations can vary considerably between varieties. Climate change and low inputs, particularly carbon and nutrients, affect agriculture in Pacific Island countries where cassava is commonly grown alongside traditional crops (e.g., taro). Despite increasing popularity in this region, there is limited experimental data about cassava crop management for different local varieties, their relative toxicity and nutritional value for human consumption, and their interaction with changing climate conditions. To help address this knowledge gap, three field experiments were conducted at the Koronivia Research Station of the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture. Two varieties of cassava with contrasting HCN content were planted at three different times coinciding with the start of the wet (September-October) or dry (April) seasons. A time series of measurements was conducted during the full 18-month or differing 6-month durations of each crop, based on destructive harvests and phenological observations. The former included determination of total biomass, HCN potential, carbon isotopes (δ13C), and elemental composition. Yield and nutritional value were significantly affected by variety and time of planting, and there were interactions between the two factors. Findings from this work will improve cassava management locally and will provide a valuable dataset for agronomic and biophysical model testing. Full article
