Bombus haematurus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), which arrived from the Balkan Peninsula, was first reported in Italy in 2020 in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region (FVG) (northeastern Italy) near the border with Slovenia. To study the spread and biology of the species, a survey was conducted at several sites of the FVG in the period 2023–2025. Bombus haematurus was recorded at 22 new sites across all four districts of the FVG (Trieste, Gorizia, Udine, and Pordenone), indicating its expansion towards the west. Bumblebees of this species were detected in plain and hilly areas at sites between 10 and 364 m a.s.l. They were observed more frequently at forest edges, undergrowth paths or clearings and meadows adjacent to woods, confirming the species is hylophilous. The activity of adults from February to July confirms that the bumblebee is an univoltine spring species. Specimens were observed foraging on the flowers of 19 wild and ornamental plants belonging to 12 families (in particular, Lamiaceae), confirming that the species is polylectic. The data collected indicate that B. haematurus are permanently established in the FVG and that a further spread of the species towards the west in the neighbouring Veneto region is likely. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) trends have evolved due to changing screening practices. This study assessed long-term trends in PCa incidence and survival according to Gleason score (GS) in Friuli Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. Methods: A population-based study was conducted, encompassing 21,571 PCa cases from the regional Cancer Registry, diagnosed between 2000 and 2020. Age-standardized incidence rates and 5-year overall (OS) and net survival (NS) were assessed by GS (2–6, 7, 8–10) and age group (<65, 65–74, ≥75). Trends were analyzed using Joinpoint regression. Results: PCa incidence increased from 2000 to 2007 (Annual Percent Change, APC = +1.8%), then declined sharply until 2010 (APC = −7.6%) and remained stable thereafter. Incidence of low-grade cancers (GS 2–6) decreased across all age groups, especially in men aged ≥ 75 years (APC = −8.1%). The incidence of GS 7 rose until 2007 and then stabilized. High-grade cancers (GS 8–10) showed a stable incidence, but their proportion increased from 20% to 29%, mainly in older men. Survival improved across all GS groups. For GS 2–6, OS increased from 81.4% to 88.2%; for GS 7, from 78.1% to 88.1%. GS 8–10 had smaller gains, but NS reached 82% in recent years. Among men aged ≥ 75 years, OS for GS 7 rose from 51.9% to 78.1%, and for GS 8–10, from 43.9% to 54.4%. NS remained high for GS ≤ 7. Conclusions: While overall outcomes improved, the increasing proportion of high-grade PCa, despite a stable incidence, raises concerns, particularly in older men, and calls for tailored clinical strategies. Dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungi that cause a wide range of superficial infections in humans and animals. The Trichophyton mentagrophytes species complex is one of the most clinically important groups due to its broad host range, widespread distribution, and increasing involvement in antifungal-resistant infections. Here, we described the epidemiology of T. mentagrophytes over a period of 4 years detected in the northeastern part of Italy and provided the genomic characterization of clinical isolates. ITS sequence analysis revealed that among the 13 strains studied, 11 belonged to the T. mentagrophytes complex. In detail, nine were classified as genotype I/II and two as genotype VII. Analysis of the SQLE gene revealed that nine strains harbored a wild-type gene, while two carried a Lys276Asn mutation. Genomic analysis was performed on three clinical T. mentagrophytes strains that belonged to genotype I/II, revealing the presence of different virulence factors including MEP-1, MEP-2, MEP-3, and MEP-5. Phylogenetic analysis based on core-genome SNPs demonstrated that the two genomes included in this study were clonally related to a T. mentagrophytes strain isolated in China in 2024. In conclusion, our study highlights the importance of genomic characterization in order to trace the epidemiology of dermatophytes worldwide and to characterize emerging strains. Full article

The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus fulvus) is a scavenger species that plays a vital ecological role in carrion removal. Successful survival and reproduction in captive and wildlife conditions require optimal physical status and plumage integrity. Nutritional and environmental factors, systemic diseases, and various etiological agents can influence feather alterations. Although frequently documented in captive psittacine species, feather abnormalities are extremely rare in wild birds. Since 2020, two free-living griffon vultures in northeastern Italy have been found in poor physical condition, unable to fly due to partial feather loss and malformation of remiges and rectrices. Histopathologic examination of follicles and peri-follicular tissue revealed atrophy, keratin replacement, vasculitis, and calamus dystrophy with lymphohistiocytic perivasculitis. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis identified the presence of virus-like particles in epithelial and inflammatory cells. Although virome analysis did not confirm the presence of this virus in pooled affected samples, this study provides the first report of an emerging plumage disorder in free-ranging griffon vultures, which requires further characterization. This study investigated the presence and distribution of macrolitter along four beach sites on the Ferrara coast, North-eastern Italy. At each site, monitoring campaigns were conducted from summer 2023 to summer 2024 to assess seasonal and cross-shore fluctuations of litter items and their relations with local geomorphological features. Following the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, 5627 litter items were collected, with an average density of 0.61 ± 0.23 items/m2. Plastic was the dominant material, representing 94% of the total. The Clean Coast Index (CCI) was applied to evaluate beach cleanliness, seasonal patterns, and cross-shore litter distribution. Although the sites were generally classified as “Clean”, CCI values revealed a progressive decline in cleanliness from summer to spring. Litter was especially accumulated in the upper backshore and at the dune foot. All macrolitter items were classified by material, typology, and usage category to identify potential sources of release, following the Joint List of Litter Categories for Marine Macrolitter Monitoring. The “Top 10” of the most collected items was compiled per each site, season, and geomorphological zone. The results underscore the relevance of high-resolution monitoring programs to support the development of targeted management strategies for effective beach litter mitigation. Full article

This review synthesizes the corpus of archaeometric and analytical investigations focused on mortar-based materials, including wall paintings, plasters, and concrete, in the Roman Regio X and neighboring territories of northeastern Italy from the mid-1970s to the present. Organized into three principal categories—wall paintings and pigments, structural and foundational mortars, and flooring preparations—the analysis highlights the main methodological advances and progress in petrographic microscopy, mineralogical analysis, and mechanical testing of ancient mortars. Despite extensive case studies, the review identifies a critical need for systematic, statistically robust, and chronologically anchored datasets to fully reconstruct socio-economic and technological landscapes of this provincial region. This work offers a programmatic research agenda aimed at bridging current gaps and fostering integrated understandings of ancient construction technologies in northern Italy. Strapdown gravity systems are increasingly employed in airborne geophysical exploration and geodetic studies due to advantages such as ease of installation, wide dynamic range, and adaptability to various platforms, including airplanes, helicopters, and large drones. This study presents results from an airborne gravity survey conducted over the northeastern sector of Sardinia (Italy), using a high-resolution strapdown gravity ensuring an accuracy of approximately 1 mGal. Data were collected at an average altitude of 1800 m with a spatial resolution of 3.0 km. The survey focused on the Sos Enattos area near Lula (Nuoro province), a candidate site for the Einstein Telescope (ET), a third-generation gravitational wave observatory. The ideal site is required to be geologically and seismically stable with a well-characterized subsurface. To support this, we performed a new gravity survey to complement existing geological and seismic data aimed at characterizing the mid-to-shallow crustal structure of Sos Enattos. Results show that the strapdown system effectively detects gravity anomalies linked to crustal sources down to ~3.5 km, with particular emphasis within the 1–2 km depth range. Airborne gravity data reveal higher frequency anomalies than those resolved by the EGM2008 global gravity model and show good agreement with local terrestrial gravity data. Forward modeling of the gravity field suggests a crust dominated by alternating high-density metamorphic rocks and granitoid intrusions of the Variscan basement. These findings enhance the geophysical understanding of Sos Enattos and support its candidacy for the ET site. Full article

Mediterranean countries represent a dynamic hub of cultural exchange, where wild plants play a significant role in culinary traditions. A substantial number of these plants belong to the Asteraceae family. The climate similarities across the region contribute to the common distribution ranges of the plants. While many species are widely distributed, others are confined to specific subregions, such as the western Mediterranean, eastern Mediterranean, or North Africa. Only six taxa of the traditionally consumed wild Asteraceae plants are endemic to just one country. This review focuses on wild plants from the Asteraceae family traditionally used as food across 13 study sites, comprising 11 countries in the Mediterranean and adjacent territories, including both mainland areas and three islands. The objective is to identify and analyze patterns of native distribution in relation to actual consumption. As a result, 167 edible wild plants from the Asteraceae family were identified. Their patterns of distribution and consumption are described and analyzed. The highest number of these edible wild plants from the Asteraceae family is consumed in Spain (n = 65), followed by southern Italy (n = 44) and Morocco (n = 32). A similar pattern of consumption is seen in Turkey (n = 24), Sicily (n = 23), Jordan and Palestine (n = 21), and Bulgaria (n = 21). It is notable that 106 plants are used as food in one particular country only, although most of them are distributed in several other countries. Many of the species consumed in certain countries are not used by neighboring populations, highlighting a limited cross-border transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge. The findings from a Jaccard index statistical analysis are discussed. Full article

Human migration has driven transformative shifts in agricultural systems by reshaping how communities relate biologically and culturally to the land. Migration demands the reconfiguration of preexisting human–environment relationships, a process central to agricultural history. Understanding adaptation strategies is essential for land studies as it highlights the impact of cultural persistence on agricultural practices and the potential challenges in integrating migrant rural knowledge with local ecological systems. In the late 19th century, a significant migration wave occurred from the Veneto region in northeastern Italy to southern Brazil, significantly impacting Brazilian agri-food production. This study investigates the biocultural adaptation strategies employed by the first Veneto communities in their new Brazilian environment. Data for this research were derived from the letters sent by Veneto migrants from Brazil in the initial wave of Italian migration (1877–1894). Utilising Critical Discourse Analysis and Sentiment Analysis of migrants’ letters, we explored the Veneto settlers’ perceptions of the Brazilian landscape, agri-food production practices, and culinary traditions. Our findings show that the Brazilian environment was perceived as predominantly negative, particularly in the wilderness areas. The initial Venetian migrant settlement exhibited no genuine biocultural adaptation strategies. Instead, they deliberately resisted Brazilian influences, striving to reproduce Veneto’s agricultural model verbatim in their new surroundings. The study also opens a new trajectory in historical ethnobiology, thus suggesting new potential applications of the analysis of migrants’ letters. Full article

Gastrointestinal nematode infections are due to a wide number of helminthic genera and species, representing a major concern in goat and sheep farming and leading to different health issues and a general economic loss. Traditional diagnostic tools do not allow for a specific identification and, although a shift towards molecular diagnostic techniques is ongoing, species or genus-specific diagnosis is still poorly implemented. This study describes the development of a novel real-time PCR method for diagnosing Haemonchus sp. and its relative abundance in mixed infections in grazing ruminants. The method employs two primer/probe sets targeting the 18S-rRNA-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region: one shared by all strongylids (GEN) and another specific to Haemonchus sp. (HAEM). The method demonstrated optimal efficiency and determination coefficients when applied to serial dilutions of DNA extract. It was then applied in Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) trials conducted on five sheep and five goat farms in northeastern Italy. Seven farms were suspected of overall resistance and only one farm of Heamonchus-related resistance. The results proved the genus-specific approach as valuable in interpreting treatment outcomes and showing concerning levels of anthelmintic treatment ineffectiveness. Further research and sensitization activity is required to encourage the adoption of the method by local farmers and veterinarians. Full article

Background: Thimerosal has been widely used as a preservative to prevent microbial growth in medications and vaccines. However, in 1999 its removal from vaccine formulations was called for due to concerns about its potential side effects on humans, with subsequent reduced sensitizations at patch tests. The present multi-center study investigated the epidemiological, occupational and temporal pattern of sensitization to Thimerosal in North-Eastern Italy during 1997–2023 and associated factors. Methods: Due to variability in patch testing and positive reactions by the centers, this study was broken down by three periods: 1997–2004 (including all centers but Trieste); 1997–2015 (considering only Padua and Pordenone); and 2010–2023 (considering only Trieste and Pordenone). Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate prevalence of sensitization to Thimerosal and associated factors. Results were expressed as adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: Prevalence of positive patch test reactions to Thimerosal decreased from (8.13%) in 1997 to 0.95% in 2023 across all centers combined. Prevalence of positivity to Thimerosal was 9.49% during 1997–2004 (in all centers yet excluding Trieste), 8.41% during 1997–2015 (considering only Padua and Pordenone) and 4.01% during 2010–2023 (considering only Trieste and Pordenone). A significantly decreasing trend of Thimerosal sensitization was observed during 1997–2015 (aOR = 0.94; 95%CI: 0.92; 0.95). Regardless of the study period, sensitization to Thimerosal was consistently and significantly higher among health care workers (HCWs) and in patients born during 1981–1990. Conclusions: The significantly decreasing prevalence of sensitization to Thimerosal over time likely reflected removal policies from vaccines and medications after 1999. Likewise, the higher prevalence of patch test reactions in patients born during 1981–1990 may mirror the widespread presence of this hapten in vaccines and medications in the 1980ies. Moreover, the increased prevalence of patch test reactions positive to Thimerosal in HCWs probably reflected higher influenza vaccination uptake in this group compared to other occupational categories. Positive patch test reactions to Thimerosal after 2000 were likely clinically irrelevant though. Full article

In today’s world, power distribution systems and information and communication technology (ICT) systems are increasingly interconnected, forming cyber–physical power systems (CPPSs) at the core of smart grids. Ensuring the resilience of these systems is essential for maintaining reliable performance under disasters, failures, or cyber-attacks. Identifying critical nodes within these interdependent networks is key to preserving system robustness. This paper applies complex network (CN) theory—specifically degree centrality (DC), closeness centrality (CC), and betweenness centrality (BC)—to a real-world distribution grid integrated with an ICT layer in northeastern Italy. Simulations are conducted across three scenarios: a directed power network, an undirected power network, and an undirected ICT network. Each centrality metric generates a ranking of nodes which is validated using node removal performance (NRP) analysis. In the directed power network, in-closeness centrality and out-degree centrality are the most effective in identifying critical nodes, with correlations of 84% and 74% with NRP, respectively. DC and BC perform best in the undirected power network, with correlation values of 67% and 53%, respectively. In the ICT network, BC achieves the highest correlation (64%), followed by CC at 55%. Expanding Host Range: First Record of Eustrongylides excisus in Padogobius bonelli (Gobiidae) from the Po River (Northwest Italy)

Fish-borne parasites encompass diverse taxonomic groups, including nematodes of the genus Eustrongylides (family Dioctophymatidae), which infect fish, fish-eating birds, and, occasionally, humans. Eustrongylides spp. are globally distributed, with E. ignotus and E. tubifex prevalent in North America, while E. excisus is more frequent in Europe and the Middle East. This study investigates the presence of E. excisus in a fish community of the Po River (Turin, northwest Italy). Among 170 fish sampled from three sites along the Po River, only two Padogobius bonelli individuals from the Murazzi site were found to be infected, each hosting a single larva within the abdominal cavity. Molecular analysis (ITS rDNA sequencing) confirmed the parasite as E. excisus, showing 100% identity with known sequences. Although prevalence in this study was low (1.18%), the findings significantly expand the known host range of E. excisus, previously reported only in other gobiid species in Eastern Europe. The parasite is widely distributed in Italy, especially in commercial fish from large lakes, and its spread is facilitated by oligochaete intermediate hosts and piscivorous birds like cormorants. Given the benthic habits and diet of P. bonelli, increased monitoring is needed to better understand the parasite’s transmission dynamics and the potential risks to native biodiversity and human health. The Impact of Epidemiological Trends and Guideline Adherence on Candidemia-Associated Mortality: A 14-Year Study in Northeastern Italy

Invasive candidiasis represents a major global health concern, with incidence and mortality rates expected to rise due to medical advancements and unavoidable risk factors. This retrospective, multicentric study was conducted in eight hospitals in a northeastern Italian region, enrolling adult patients diagnosed with candidemia from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2022. Epidemiological trends and clinical characteristics were analyzed and compared to those from a prior regional study (2009–2011), allowing a fourteen-year comparative evaluation. A shift in species distribution was observed, with a decline in Candida albicans (from 65.7% to 57.8%) and a rise in non-albicans species, particularly the Candida parapsilosis complex (from 16.1% to 18.2%). Guideline adherence was assessed applying the EQUAL Candida score; scores ≥ than 11.5 were independently associated with improved in-hospital survival (HR 3.51, p < 0.001). Among individual score components, empiric echinocandin therapy and central venous catheter removal correlated with better outcomes. Centers with routine infectious disease (ID) consultations showed higher survival and adherence, reinforcing the value of specialist involvement. These findings support local epidemiological and management practice surveillance program adoption to address context-specific gaps, promote the adoption of best practices in Candida BSI management—as expanded ID specialist consultations and education programs—and, ultimately, reduce candidemia-related mortality rates. The photochemical production of tropospheric ozone (O3) is very closely linked to seasonal cycles and peaks in solar radiation occurring during warm seasons. In the Mediterranean Basin, which is a hotspot for climate and air mass transport mechanisms, boreal warm seasons cause a notable increase in tropospheric O3, which unlike stratospheric O3 is not beneficial for the environment. At the Lamezia Terme (code: LMT) World Meteorological Organization—Global Atmosphere Watch (WMO/GAW) station located in Calabria, Southern Italy, peaks of tropospheric O3 were observed during boreal summer and spring seasons, and were consequently linked to specific wind patterns compatible with increased photochemical activity in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The finding resulted in the introduction of a correction factor for O3 in the O3/NOx (ozone to nitrogen oxides) ratio “Proximity” methodology for the assessment of air mass aging. However, some of the mechanisms driving O3 patterns and their correlation with other parameters at the LMT site remain unknown, despite the environmental and health hazards posed by tropospheric O3 in the area. In general, the issue of ozone photochemical pollution in the region of Calabria, Italy, is understudied. In this study, the behavior of O3 at the site is assessed with remarkable detail using nine years (2015–2023) of data and correlations with surface temperature and solar radiation. The evaluations demonstrate non-negligible correlations between environmental factors, such as temperature and solar radiation, and O3 concentrations, driven by peculiar patterns in local wind circulation. The northeastern sector of LMT, partly neglected in previous works, yielded higher statistical correlations with O3 than expected. The findings of this study also indicate, for central Calabria, the possibility of heterogeneities in O3 exposure due to local geomorphology and wind patterns. A case study of very high O3 concentrations reported during the 2015 summer season is also reported by analyzing the tendencies observed during the period with additional methodologies and highlighting drivers of photochemical pollution on larger scales, also demonstrating that near-surface concentrations result from specific combinations of multiple factors.
