Machining chromium–nickel alloy steel is challenging due to its material properties, such as high strength and toughness. These properties often lead to tool damage and degradation of tool life, which overall impacts the production time, cost, and quality of the product. Therefore, it is essential to investigate early signs of tool damage to determine the effective machining conditions for chromium–nickel alloy steel, thereby increasing tool life and improving product quality. In this study, the early signs of tool wear were observed in a physical vapor deposition (PVD) carbide-coated tool (Seco Tools, Björnbacksvägen, Sweden) during the machining of X5CrNi18-10 steel under both dry and wet conditions. A finish turning operation was performed on the outer diameter (OD) of the workpiece with a 0.4 mm nose radius tool. At the early stage, the tool was examined from the functional side (f–side) and the passive side (p–side). The results indicate that dry machining leads to increased coating removal, more heat generation, and visible damage, such as pits and surface scratches. By comparison, wet machining helps reduce heat and wear, thereby improving tool life and machining quality. These findings suggest that a coolant must be used when machining chromium–nickel alloy steel with a PVD carbide-coated tool. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical, tribological, and electrochemical behaviour of a novel precipitation-hardenable martensitic alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The alloy was specifically engineered with an optimised composition, free from cobalt and molybdenum, and featuring reduced nickel content (7 wt.%) and 8 wt.% chromium. It has been developed as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional maraging steels, while maintaining high mechanical strength and a refined microstructure tailored to the steep thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process. Several ageing heat treatments were assessed to evaluate their influence on microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, retained austenite content, dislocation density, as well as wear behaviour (pin-on-disc test) and corrosion resistance (polarisation curves in 3.5%NaCl). The results indicate that ageing at 540 °C for 2 h offers an optimal combination of hardness (550–560 HV), tensile strength (~1700 MPa), microstructural stability, and wear resistance, with a 90% improvement compared to the as-built condition. In contrast, ageing at 600 °C for 1 h enhances ductility and corrosion resistance (Rp = 462.2 kΩ; Ecorr = –111.8 mV), at the expense of a higher fraction of reverted austenite (~34%) and reduced hardness (450 HV). This study demonstrates that the mechanical, surface, and electrochemical performance of this novel SLM-produced alloy can be effectively tailored through controlled thermal treatments, offering promising opportunities for demanding applications requiring a customised balance of strength, durability, and corrosion behaviour. The current research trends of production engineering are based on optimizing the machining process concerning human and environmental factors. High-performance materials, such as hardened steels, nickel-based alloys, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and titanium alloys, are classified as hard-to-cut due to their ability to maintain strength at high operating temperatures. Due to these characteristics, such materials are employed in applications such as aerospace, marine, energy generation, and structural. The purpose of this article is to investigate the machinability of these alloys under various cutting conditions. The purpose of this article is to compare cryogenic cooling and cryogenic processing from the perspective of machinability and sustainability in the manufacturing process. Compared to conventional machining, hybrid techniques, which mix cryogenic and minimal quantity lubricant, led to significantly reduced cutting forces of 40–50%, cutting temperatures and surface finishes by approximately 20–30% and more than 40%, respectively. A carbon footprint is determined by several factors including power consumption, energy requirements, and carbon dioxide emissions. As a result of the cryogenic technology, the energy consumption, power consumption, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 40%, 28%, and 35%. Full article

Nickel-based coatings have been demonstrated to effectively enhance the surface performance of stainless-steel components. The present study investigates the deposition efficiency and quality of Colmonoy 227-F nickel alloy coatings on AISI 304 stainless steel using direct energy deposition (DED). The work focuses on the relationships between process parameters, microstructural features, and mechanical properties. A total of sixteen process parameter combinations were studied, varying laser power and scanning speed to establish optimal deposition conditions and to evaluate coating morphology, surface topology, dilution behavior, and mechanical performance. The surface geometry was analyzed using three-dimensional digital confocal microscopy. New material distribution (MD) indices were developed to quantify spatial uniformity and integrity of single coating scan tracks (CSTs) across the XY, XZ, and YZ planes. The optimal process was identified around 900 W laser power, balancing deposition efficiency and structural integrity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) reveal a gradual compositional transition between coating and substrate. The results of the microhardness test demonstrate a consistent gradient in mechanical properties, extending from the coating to the substrate. Coatings were found to achieve a hardness level of up to 600 HK. These findings establish a new benchmark for evaluating DED high-performance coatings and offer a scalable methodology for optimizing additive manufacturing processes in surface engineering applications. The present study aims to investigate the microstructural evolution and local mechanical properties of an AlFe18Si8Cr5Ni2 alloy processed via Powder Bed Fusion–Laser-Based Manufacturing (PBF-LB/M). Designed with a focus on sustainability, this alloy was produced by deriving the necessary elements from AlSi10Mg and 304L steel, two of the most widely used alloys and, consequently, among the easiest materials to source from machining scrap. By leveraging iron, chromium, and nickel from these widespread standard compositions, the alloy mitigates the detrimental effects of Fe contamination in Al-based alloys while simultaneously enhancing mechanical performance. A comprehensive investigation of the impact of rapid solidification and thermal cycling offered novel insights into phase stability, elemental distribution, and local mechanical behavior. In particular, microstructural analyses using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry revealed significant phase modifications post PBF-LB/M processing, including Fe-rich acicular phase segregation at melt pool boundaries and enhanced strengthening phase formation. In addition, nanoindentation mapping was used to demonstrate the correlation between microstructural heterogeneity and local mechanical properties. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Al-Fe-Si-Cr-Ni alloy changes after the interaction with the laser, supporting the development of high-performance, sustainable Al-based materials for PBF-LB/M applications. This study investigates the tribocorrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel (304SS), S31254 super austenitic stainless steel (S31254 SASS), and a medium-entropy austenitic stainless steel (MEASS) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution under sliding conditions. The objective is to clarify the performance differences among these alloys when exposed to simultaneous mechanical wear and corrosion. Electrochemical techniques, including potentiodynamic polarization and potentiostatic sliding tests, were used to evaluate corrosion resistance and repassivation behavior. Quantitative analysis based on ASTM G119 revealed that MEASS showed a 68% lower total material loss compared to 304SS and a 55% lower loss compared to S31254. MEASS also exhibited the lowest corrosion current density (1.46 μA/cm2) under tribocorrosion conditions, representing an 83% reduction compared to 304SS. These improvements are attributed to the higher chromium and nickel contents of MEASS, which enhance passive film stability and reduce susceptibility to localized corrosion. The results demonstrate that MEASS offers superior resistance to combined mechanical and corrosive degradation in chloride-containing environments. Full article

316L stainless steel is widely employed in various industrial sectors, including shipbuilding, offshore plants, high-temperature/high-pressure (HTHP) piping systems, and hydrogen infrastructure, due to its excellent mechanical stability, superior corrosion resistance, and robust resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. This study presents 316L stainless steel alloys fabricated via hot isostatic pressing (HIP), conducted at 1300 °C and 100 MPa for 2 h, incorporating Cr2N powder and an optimized Ni/Mn ratio based on the nickel equivalent (Ni_eq). During HIP, Cr2N decomposition yielded a uniformly refined, dense austenitic microstructure, with enhanced corrosion resistance and mechanical performance. Corrosion resistance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization in 3.5 wt.% NaCl after 1 h of OCP stabilization, using a scan range of −0.25 V to +1.5 V (Ag/AgCl) at 1 mV/s. Optimization of the Ni/Mn ratio effectively improved the pitting corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. It is cost-effective to partially substitute Ni with Mn. Of the various alloys, C13Ni-N exhibited significantly enhanced hardness (~30% increase from 158.3 to 206.2 HV) attributable to nitrogen-induced solid solution strengthening. E11Ni-HM exhibited the highest pitting corrosion resistance given the superior PREN value (31.36). In summary, the incorporation of Cr2N and adjustment of the Ni/Mn ratio effectively improved the performance of 316L stainless steel alloys. Notably, alloy E11Ni-HM demonstrated a low corrosion current density of 0.131 μA/cm2, indicating superior corrosion resistance. These findings offer valuable insights for developing cost-efficient, mechanically robust corrosion-resistant materials for hydrogen-related applications. Further research will evaluate alloy resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and investigate long-term material stability. Full article

Fluoride mouthwashes are often recommended by dental professionals due to their proven benefits for oral hygiene. However, it is vital to acknowledge that these products may have undesirable effects on orthodontic treatment outcomes, particularly by altering the biomechanical properties of orthodontic devices and their components. To gain a comprehensive understanding of this potential issue, an extensive and systematic search was conducted across seven distinct databases. PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA ScR) guidelines were followed. Following a detailed evaluation and careful scrutiny of the available evidence, a total of seven relevant studies met the inclusion criteria and were incorporated into the current scoping review. Findings indicated that regular intraoral use of fluoride-containing mouthwashes could lead to heightened corrosion and greater release of metal ions from stainless-steel brackets and nickel–titanium (NiTi) archwires. Additionally, the mechanical properties and structural integrity of titanium–molybdenum alloy (TMA) wires were negatively influenced by exposure to fluoride mouthwashes. Although existing evidence highlights these potential drawbacks, there remains a clear necessity for additional comprehensive research. Given the possibility that fluoride mouthwashes could adversely influence orthodontic treatment effectiveness, orthodontists and dental clinicians must exercise cautious judgment and deliberate consideration when prescribing fluoride-based mouthwashes for patients undergoing orthodontic therapy. To address the graphitization of diamond induced by high temperatures during laser cladding of diamond-reinforced composites, this study proposes a laser cladding method utilizing Inconel 718 (IN718) nickel-based alloy as a transition layer which has a lower melting point than the substrate of 45# steel. And then, in order to analyze the detailed characteristics of the samples, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDS, Raman spectral analyzer, super-depth-of-field microscope, and friction tests were used. Experimental study and the test results demonstrate that the IN718 transition layer enhances coating performance through dual mechanisms: firstly, its relatively low melting point (1392 °C) reduces the molten pool’s peak temperature, effectively suppressing thermal-induced graphitization of the diamond; on the other hand, simultaneously it acts as a diffusion barrier to inhibit Fe migration from the substrate and weaken Fe–C interfacial catalytic reactions. Microstructural analysis reveals improved diamond encapsulation and reduced interfacial sintering defects in coatings with the transition layer. Tribological tests confirm that samples with the transition layer L exhibit lower friction coefficients and significantly enhanced wear resistance compared to those without. This study elucidates the synergistic mechanism of the transition layer in thermal management optimization and interfacial reaction suppression, providing an innovative solution to overcome the high-temperature damage bottleneck in laser-clad diamond tools. Iron and iron-nickel alloy electrodeposits synthesized from sulfate-based electroplating baths were applied to a mild carbon steel substrate. Coated specimens were immersed in an oxygen-saturated, weak ammonium hydroxide solution (pH 9.5–10.0), and their corrosion performance was evaluated using electrochemical techniques. Galvanic and general corrosion behaviors were analyzed to assess the sacrificial protection provided by Fe and Fe-Ni coatings relative to uncoated steel. The influence of anode-to-cathode (A/C) surface area ratios (1:1, 10:1, and 100:1) on the occurrence of plating-induced surface cracks was also examined. Surface morphology and elemental composition of the deposits were characterized. Results of the study indicated that increasing the Ni2+/Fe2+ molar ratio of the electroplating bath from 0 to 0.167 led to (1) reduced surface porosity and cracking, (2) decreased galvanic corrosion rates between the electrodeposit and substrate, and (3) a progressive increase in the temperature dependence of the general corrosion rate between 20 °C and 60 °C. The development of Fe and Fe-Ni alloy electrodeposits as protective coatings is of particular interest in water-tube power boiler applications, where production of corrosion products must be controlled. Further research is needed to develop coatings that perform predictably under elevated pressures and temperatures typical of operating boiler environments. Full article

The galvanostatic electrodeposition of cobalt–nickel alloy coatings performed out on a 304 stainless steel substrate. The electrolyte baths contained metals salts, along with boric acid and sodium benzene sulfonate (SBS) as an organic additive in the deposition process. Structural and topographic analyses were performed using SEM-EDS and AFM techniques, respectively. The findings confirm the formation of nanostructured coatings. The images depicting various stages of coating formation indicated the inhibitory role of the organic additive. The presence of SBS enabled the formation of a coating composed of grains with diverse geometries and significantly reduced surface roughness. Hydrogen evolution was conducted in an alkaline environment (1 M NaOH). Overpotentials for the different structures were recorded at 10 mA/cm2, yielding 196 mV and 225 mV for the coatings deposited with and without SBS, respectively. Additionally, experiments were performed in a laboratory-designed electrolyzer, which allowed for the measurement of gas volumes (H2 and O2) generated under constant voltage and current conditions. The results demonstrated that the obtained coatings perform more effectively as hydrogen evolution cathodes than currently used materials, particularly under higher current densities. Electrolysis was conducted for 8 h, revealing improved stability of the coating deposited in the presence of SBS. Full article

This study presents the results of laboratory experiments on the processing of lateritic nickel ores mixed with coal and CaO, followed by the use of the obtained product for the smelting of nickel-containing ferroalloy by the metallothermic method. The study analyzed the thermodynamic effects of complex reductant concentration (silicon- and aluminum-containing alloy) on the reduction degree of nickel and iron. An experimental process resulted in a product containing Nitotal (2.60%) and Fetotal (60.52%), obtained through reduction roasting of lateritic nickel ore mixed with coal and an addition of 20 g of CaO at a temperature of 1150 °C. Under laboratory conditions, a nickel-containing ferroalloy was successfully obtained using the product after reduction roasting and a complex alloy as the reducing agent. The following optimal process parameters were determined: reductant consumption of 20 g per 100 g of the reduction roasting product, smelting temperature of 1600 °C, and slag basicity (CaO/SiO2) of 0.5. In this case, a nickel-containing ferroalloy with 72% iron, 15% nickel, and up to 5% chromium was successfully obtained through silicon and aluminum reduction using a complex alloy. A microstructural analysis of the nickel-containing alloy was conducted using an electron probe microanalyzer (JXA-8230) in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that silicon and iron were the dominant elements in all particles. Nickel was detected at concentrations of up to 15.02 wt. %, while chromium reached 3.47 wt. %. Depending on the silicon concentration, the nickel-containing ferroalloy is recommended for corrosion-resistant steel production (Si < 5%) and as a reducing agent for ferronickel production (Si > 5%). Hip joint implants are among the most prevalent types of medical implants utilized for the replacement of damaged joints. The utilization of modern implant materials, such as cobalt–chromium alloys, stainless steel, titanium, and other titanium alloys, is accompanied by challenges, including the toxicity of certain elements (e.g., aluminum, vanadium, nickel) and excessive Young’s modulus, which adversely impact biomechanical compatibility. A mismatch between the stiffness of the implant material and the bone tissue, known as stress shielding, can lead to adverse outcomes such as bone resorption and implant loosening. Recent studies have shifted the focus to β-titanium alloys due to their exceptional biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and low Young’s modulus, which is close to the Young’s modulus of bone tissue (10–30 GPa). In this study, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and phase stability of the Ti-38Zr-11Nb alloy were investigated. Energy dispersion spectrometry was employed to confirm the homogeneous distribution of Ti, Zr, and Nb in the alloy. A subsequent microstructural analysis revealed the presence of elongated β-grains subsequent to rolling and quenching. Furthermore, grinding contributed to the process of recrystallization and the formation of subgrains. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of a stable β-phase under any heat treatment conditions, which can be explained by the use of Nb as a β-stabilizer and Zr as a neutral element with a weak β-stabilizing effect in the presence of other β-stabilizers. Furthermore, the modulus of elasticity, as determined by tensile testing, exhibited a decline from 85 GPa to 81 GPa after annealing. Mechanical tests demonstrated a substantial enhancement in tensile strength (from 529 MPa to 628 MPa) concurrent with a 32% reduction in elongation to fracture of the samples. These alterations are attributed to microstructural transformations, including the formation of subgrains and the rearrangement of dislocations. This study’s findings suggest that the Ti-38Zr-11Nb alloy has potential as a material of choice due to its lower Young’s modulus compared to traditional materials and its stable β-phase, which enhances the implant’s durability and reduces the risk of brittle phases forming over time. This study demonstrates that the corrosion resistance of titanium grade 2 and Ti-38Zr-11Nb is comparable. The material in question exhibited no evidence of cytotoxic activity in the context of mammalian cells. Full article

In order to solve the problem of poor weld quality caused by brittle metal compounds in the welding of dissimilar metals between aluminum and steel, a pre-welding treatment method of prefabricated copper–nickel binary coating between aluminum and steel has been proposed. Laser lap welding tests and weld performance tests were conducted using 6061 aluminum alloy and DP590 duplex steel with a thickness of 0.5 mm as base materials, with steel on top and aluminum on bottom. The research results indicate that the prefabricated copper–nickel binary coating can effectively suppress the formation of brittle phase compounds of Fe and Al; the increase of copper and nickel elements is beneficial for the formation of tough compounds such as (Fe, Cu, Ni)3Al, (Fe, Cu, Ni)Al3, and CuAl5 in the weld zone; when the thickness of the copper coating is 155 μm and the thickness of the nickel coating is 110 μm, the mechanical properties of the aluminum steel lap welding seam are the best, and the maximum shear force that can be withstood is 208.09 N, which is 56% higher than uncoated sample. Performance of Laser-Clad Transition Layers on H13 Steel

This study addresses the crack formation problem when laser cladding CoCrFeNiAl high-entropy alloy onto H13 hot-work die steel, aiming to identify suitable transition layer materials. Five nickel-based alloys—Inconel 718, Inconel 625, Hastelloy X, FGH4096, and FGH4169—are selected as alternatives. Three-point bending and hot tensile tests are conducted to assess performance under different stress directions. Test results show that the FGH4096 and FGH4169 coatings fail due to insufficient element diffusion and weak interfacial bonding. Cracks appear at the coating–substrate interface of Inconel 625 and Hastelloy X. In contrast, Inconel 718 performs best, with excellent thermal expansion matching and strong stress resistance. In the three-point bending test, the specimens with Inconel 718 transition layers did not show cracks during the loading process, while specimens with some other alloy transition layers cracked or fractured, which proves that Inconel 718 can effectively enhance the bonding force between the coating and the substrate and improve the material’s performance under bending stress. In the hot tensile test, the stress–strain curve of Inconel 718 is at a high position with a high yield strength, showing excellent resistance to plastic deformation and significantly improving the performance of the nickel-based layer under hot tensile conditions. Therefore, Inconel 718 is identified as the optimal transition layer material. Full article
