Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. There is an obvious correlation between the photovoltaic (PV) output of different physical levels; that is, the overall power change trend of large-scale regional (high-level) stations can provide a reference for the prediction of the output of sub-regional (low-level) stations. The current PV prediction methods have not deeply explored the multi-level PV power generation elements and have not considered the correlation between different levels, resulting in the inability to obtain potential information on PV power generation. Moreover, traditional probabilistic prediction models lack adaptability, which can lead to a decrease in prediction performance under different PV prediction scenarios. Therefore, a probabilistic prediction method for short-term PV power based on multi-level adaptive dynamic integration is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an analysis is conducted on the multi-level PV power stations together with the influence of the trend of high-level PV power generation on the forecast of low-level power generation. Then, the PV data are decomposed into multiple layers using the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and analyzed by combining fuzzy entropy (FE) and mutual information (MI). After that, a new multi-level model prediction method, namely, the improved dual dynamic adaptive stacked generalization (I-Stacking) ensemble learning model, is proposed to construct short-term PV power generation prediction models. Finally, an improved dynamic adaptive kernel density estimation (KDE) method for prediction errors is proposed, which optimizes the performance of the prediction intervals (PIs) through variable bandwidth. Through comparative experiments and analysis using traditional methods, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. Full article

This study is the first to systematically integrate supervised machine learning (decision tree) and association rule mining techniques to analyze accident data from the Taipei Metro system, conducting a large-scale data-driven investigation into both passenger injury and train malfunction events. The research demonstrates strong novelty and practical contributions. In the passenger injury analysis, a dataset of 3331 cases was examined, from which two highly explanatory rules were extracted: (i) elderly passengers (aged > 61) involved in station incidents are more likely to suffer moderate to severe injuries; and (ii) younger passengers (aged ≤ 61) involved in escalator incidents during off-peak hours are also at higher risk of severe injury. This is the first study to quantitatively reveal the interactive effect of age and time of use on injury severity. In the train malfunction analysis, 1157 incidents with delays exceeding five minutes were analyzed. The study identified high-risk condition combinations—such as those involving rolling stock, power supply, communication, and signaling systems—associated with specific seasons and time periods (e.g., a lift value of 4.0 for power system failures during clear mornings from 06:00–12:00, and 3.27 for communication failures during summer evenings from 18:00–24:00). These findings were further cross-validated with maintenance records to uncover underlying causes, including brake system failures, cable aging, and automatic train operation (ATO) module malfunctions. Targeted preventive maintenance recommendations were proposed. Additionally, the study highlighted existing gaps in the completeness and consistency of maintenance records, recommending improvements in documentation standards and data auditing mechanisms. Overall, this research presents a new paradigm for intelligent metro system maintenance and safety prediction, offering substantial potential for broader adoption and practical application. The Xiong’an New Area, a newly established national-level zone in China, faces the threat of land subsidence and ground fissure due to groundwater overexploitation and geothermal extraction, threatening urban safety. This study integrates time-series InSAR and GNSS monitoring to analyze spatiotemporal deformation patterns from 2017/05 to 2025/03. The key results show: (1) Three subsidence hotspots, namely northern Xiongxian (max. cumulative subsidence: 591 mm; 70 mm/yr), Luzhuang, and Liulizhuang, strongly correlate with geothermal wells and F4/F5 fault zones; (2) GNSS baseline analysis (e.g., XA01-XA02) reveals fissure-induced differential deformation (max. horizontal/vertical rates: 40.04 mm/yr and 19.8 mm/yr); and (3) InSAR–GNSS cross-validation confirms the high consistency of the results (Pearson’s correlation coefficient = 0.86). Subsidence in Xiongxian is driven by geothermal/industrial groundwater use, without any seasonal variations, while Anxin exhibits agricultural pumping-linked seasonal fluctuations. The use of rooftop GNSS stations reduces multipath effects and improves urban monitoring accuracy. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity stems from coupled resource exploitation and tectonic activity. We propose prioritizing rooftop GNSS deployments to enhance east–west deformation monitoring. This framework balances regional and local-scale precision, offering a replicable solution for geological risk assessments in emerging cities. Full article

A systems-oriented review of machine learning (ML) over the entire flood management spectrum, encompassing fluvial flood control, pluvial flood management, and resiliency-risk characterization was undertaken. Deep learners like long short-term memory (LSTM) networks perform well in predicting reservoir inflows and outflows. Convolution neural networks (CNNs) and other object identification algorithms are being explored in assessing levee and flood wall failures. The use of ML methods in pump station operations is limited due to lack of public-domain datasets. Reinforcement learning (RL) has shown promise in controlling low-impact development (LID) systems for pluvial flood management. Resiliency is defined in terms of the vulnerability of a community to floods. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) and unsupervised ML methods are used to capture vulnerability. Supervised learning is used to model flooding hazards. Conventional approaches perform better than deep learners and ensemble methods for modeling flood hazards due to paucity of data and large inter-model predictive variability. Advances in satellite-based, drone-facilitated data collection and Internet of Things (IoT)-based low-cost sensors offer new research avenues to explore. Transfer learning at ungauged basins holds promise but is largely unexplored. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is seeing increased use and helps the transition of ML models from black-box forecasters to knowledge-enhancing predictors. Full article

The quality of Crocus sativus L. flowers, beyond their stigmas, is influenced by the presence of bioactive metabolites also in their floral bio-residues. Given the effect of climatic and soil variables on these bioactive compounds, the aim of this research was to develop an agroecological zoning of saffron crop areas within the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) La Mancha region (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain) by integrating the floral metabolite content with climatic and soil variables. To achieve this, a total of 173 samples were collected during the 2022 and 2023 harvests and analyzed via RP-HPLC-DAD to determine crocins, picrocrocin, kaempferols, and anthocyanins. Two new indices, Cropi (crocins + picrocrocin) and Kaeman (kaempferols + anthocyanins), were defined to classify flowers into four quality categories (A–D). High-quality classifications (A and B) were consistently associated with plots grouped in the meteorological stations of Ontur, El Sanchón, and Bolaños, indicating favorable edaphoclimatic conditions and climatic parameters, such as moderate temperatures and reduced humidity, for metabolite biosynthesis. In contrast, plots included in the meteorological stations of Tarazona and Pedernoso were mostly assigned to lower categories (C and D). Spatial analysis using thematic maps revealed that areas with an intermediate carbonate content, less calcareous soils, and higher organic matter levels were linked to higher flower quality. These findings highlight the influence of soil characteristics and climate, with distinct seasonal contrasts, that positively influence metabolite synthesis and flower quality. Full article

Bikeshare systems usually relocate bikes to respond to a mismatch between demand and bike supply, imposing substantial costs to operators despite the effort to encourage users to participate in voluntary rebalancing. This study initiates a search for a new strategy that can involve single station-based (SSB) riders and consider their bikes as the reserve of the current bike balance, resulting in the virtual expansion of station capacity. Thus, the behaviors of bike riders related to SSB trips are compared to investigate the potential applications. The results from analyzing the data of Citi Bike in New York City indicate that 13.4% of total trips were SSB, and the average trips per origin and destination (OD) pair was 2.6 times higher. Also, distinctive characteristics such as mean trip time regarding user groups and bike types were statistically significant within numerous OD pairs, implying the need for separate policies for both groups. Based on the analysis, stations with the highest expected benefit are identified. Full article

Security checks (SCs) at metro stations are regarded as an effective measure to address the heightened security risks associated with high ridership. Introducing SCs without exacerbating congestion requires a thorough understanding of their impact on passenger flow. Most existing studies were conducted where SCs are mandatory and fixed at certain locations. This study presents a method for advising the scale and placement for SCs under a more relaxed security setting. Using agent-based simulation with heterogeneous profiles for both inbound and outbound passenger flow, existing bottlenecks are first identified. By varying different percentages of passengers for SCs and locations to deploy SCs, we observe the influence on existing bottlenecks and suggest a suitable configuration. In our experiments, key bottlenecks are identified before tap-in fare gantries. When deploying SCs near tap-in fare gantries as seen in current practices, a screening percentage of beyond 10% could exacerbate existing bottlenecks and also create new bottlenecks at SC waiting areas. Relocating the SC to a point beyond the fare gantries helps alleviate congestion. This method provides a reference for station managers and transport authorities for balancing security and congestion. Full article

In recent years, there has been an increasing transition from 1D point-based to 3D point-cloud-based data acquisition for monitoring applications and deformation analysis tasks. Previously, many studies relied on point-to-point measurements using total stations to assess structural deformation. However, the introduction of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has commenced a new era in data capture with a high level of efficiency and flexibility for data collection and post processing. Thus, a robust understanding of both data acquisition and processing techniques is required to guarantee high-quality deliverables to geometrically separate the measurement uncertainty and movements. TLS is highly demanding in capturing detailed 3D point coordinates of a scene within either short- or long-range scanning. Although various studies have examined scanner misalignments under controlled conditions within the short range of observation (scanner calibration), there remains a knowledge gap in understanding and characterizing errors related to long-range scanning (scanning calibration). Furthermore, limited information on manufacturer-oriented calibration tests highlights the motivation for designing a user-oriented calibration test. This research focused on investigating four primary sources of error in the generic error model of TLS. These were categorized into four geometries: instrumental imperfections related to the scanner itself, atmospheric effects that impact the laser beam, scanning geometry concerning the setup and varying incidence angles during scanning, and object and surface characteristics affecting the overall data accuracy. This study presents previous findings of TLS calibration relevant to the four error sources and mitigation strategies and identified current challenges that can be implemented as potential research directions. With the rapid advancement of urbanization, the increasing demand and insufficient supply of public service facilities for children have become urgent problems requiring resolution. This study employs the Shannon diversity index, the location entropy, spatial autocorrelation, and the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of children’s public service facilities in the central urban area of Shenyang. The findings of the study are as follows: (1) There are significant differences in the spatial distribution of children’s public service facilities. Higher quantity distribution and diversity index are observed in the core area and Hunnan District compared to the peripheral areas. The Gini coefficient of various facilities is below the fair threshold of 0.4, but 90.32% of the study units have location entropy values below 1, indicating a supply–demand imbalance. (2) The spatial distribution of various facilities exhibits significant clustering characteristics, with distinct differences between high-value and low-value cluster patterns. (3) The spatial distribution of facilities is shaped by four factors: population, transportation, economy, and environmental quality. Residential area density and commercial service facility density emerge as the primary positive drivers, whereas road density and average housing price act as the main negative inhibitors. (4) The mechanisms of influencing factors exhibit spatial heterogeneity. Positive driving factors exert significant effects on new urban areas and peripheral zones, while negative factors demonstrate pronounced inhibitory effects on old urban areas. Non-linear threshold effects are observed in factors such as subway station density and public transport station density. Full article

The precise point positioning (PPP) method in GNSS is based on the processing of undifferenced phase observations. For long static sessions, this method provides results characterized by accuracies better than one centimeter, and has become a standard practice in the processing of geodetic permanent stations data. However, a drawback of the PPP method is its slow convergence, which results from the necessity of jointly estimating the coordinates and the initial phase ambiguities. This poses a challenge for very short sessions or kinematic applications. The introduction of new satellites in Low Earth Orbits (LEO) that provide phase observations for positioning, such as those currently provided by GNSS constellations, has the potential to radically improve this scenario. In this work, a preliminary case study is discussed. For a given day, two configurations are analyzed: the first considers only the GNSS satellites currently in operation, while the second includes a simulated constellation of LEO satellites. For both configurations, the geometric quality of a PPP solution is evaluated over different session lengths throughout the day. The adopted quality index is the trace of the cofactor matrix of the estimated coordinates, commonly referred to as the position dilution of precision (PDOP). The simulated LEO constellation demonstrates the capability to enhance positioning performance, particularly under conditions of good sky visibility, where the time needed to obtain a reliable solution decreases significantly. Furthermore, even in scenarios with limited satellite visibility, the inclusion of LEO satellites helps to reduce PDOP values and overall convergence time. Full article

This paper proposes a mid-term scheduling method for reservoir hydropower to enhance our ability to regulate continuous extreme new energy fluctuations. First, a data-driven scenario generation method is proposed to characterize the continuous extreme new energy output by combining kernel density estimation, Monte Carlo sampling, and the synchronized backward reduction method. Second, a two-stage stochastic hydropower–new energy complementary optimization scheduling model is constructed with the reservoir water level as the decision variable, ensuring that reservoirs have a sufficient water buffering capacity to free up transmission channels for continuous extremely high new energy outputs and sufficient water energy storage to compensate for continuous extremely low new energy outputs. Third, the mathematical model is transformed into a tractable mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem by using piecewise linear and triangular interpolation techniques on the solution, reducing the solution complexity. Finally, a case study of a hydropower–PV station in a river basin is conducted to demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively enhance hydropower’s regulation ability, to mitigate continuous extreme PV outputs, thereby improving power supply reliability in this hybrid renewable energy system. Comprehensive Substantiation of the Impact of Pre-Support Technology on a 50-Year-Old Subway Station During the Construction of Undercrossing Tunnel Lines

Due to the long operation period of Beijing Metro Line 2 and the complex surrounding building environment, this paper comprehensively studied the mechanical properties of new tunnels using close-fitting undercrossing based on pre-support technology. To control structural deformation caused by the expansion project, methods such as laboratory tests, numerical simulation, and field tests were adopted to systematically analyze the tunnel mechanics during the undercrossing of existing metro lines. First, field tests were carried out on the existing Line 2 and Line 3 tunnels during the construction period. It was found that the close-fitting construction based on pre-support technology caused small deformation displacement in the subway tunnels, with little impact on the smoothness of the existing subway rail surface. The fluctuation range was −1 to 1 mm, ensuring the safety of existing subway operations. Then, a refined finite difference model for the close-fitting undercrossing construction process based on pre-support technology was established, and a series of field and laboratory tests were conducted to obtain calculation parameters. The reliability of the numerical model was verified by comparing the monitored deformation of existing structures with the simulated structural forces and deformations. The influence of construction methods on the settlement changes of existing line tracks, structures, and deformation joints was discussed. The research results show that this construction method effectively controls the settlement deformation of existing lines. The settlement deformation of existing lines is controlled within 1~3 cm. The deformation stress of the existing lines is within the concrete strength range of the existing structure, and the tensile stress is less than 3 MPa. The maximum settlement and maximum tensile stress of the station in the pre-support jacking scheme are −5.27 mm and 2.29 MPa. The construction scheme with pre-support can more significantly control structural deformation, reduce stress variations in existing line structures, and minimize damage to concrete structures. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used in the new generation of communication systems. They serve as access points, base stations, relays, and gateways to extend network coverage, enhance connectivity, or offer communications services in places lacking telecommunication infrastructure. However, optimizing UAV placement in three-dimensional (3D) environments with diverse user distributions and uneven terrain conditions is a crucial challenge. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel framework to minimize UAV transmission power while ensuring a guaranteed data rate in realistic and complex scenarios. To this end, using the particle swarm optimization evolution (PSO-E) algorithm, this paper analyzes the impact of user-truncated distribution models for suburban, urban and dense urban environments. Extensive simulations demonstrate that dense urban environments demand higher power than suburban and urban environments, with uniform user distributions requiring the most power in all scenarios. Conversely, Gaussian and exponential distributions exhibit lower power requirements, particularly in scenarios with concentrated user hotspots. The proposed model provides insight into achieving efficient network deployment and power optimization, offering practical solutions for future communication networks in complex 3D scenarios.
