Synergistic improvements in lightweight design, flexibility, and energy absorption efficiency are a long-standing issue of flexible impact protection materials. This study proposed a multi-scale synergistic enhancement method, where nano-scale nano-silica (NS) and micro-scale carbon hollow microspheres (CHMs) were adopted to enhance the dynamic impact property of the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The mechanical behavior of the as-prepared composites under a broad range of strain rates (10−3–4500 s−1) was systematically investigated. For the composite with 1 wt.% NS and 3 wt.% CHM, the compressive strength under quasi-static conditions reached 39.73 MPa, representing a 67% improvement over the pure PDMS. Under dynamic impact (4500 s−1 strain rate), the force transmits through the NS nanonet with the energy absorbed through crushing of the CHM with a hollow structure, which elevates the specific energy absorption properties to 40.18 J/g (for the composite with 1 wt.% NS and 3 wt.% CHM), which owns a 179% enhancement compared to the composite with only 4 wt.% CHM. This work established a novel method for a hierarchical “rigid-flexible energy absorption” structural design of lightweight impact-resistant materials. Full article

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) gain widespread use, detecting electrolyte–vapor emissions during early thermal runaway (TR) remains critical to ensuring battery safety; yet, it remains understudied. Gas sensors integrating oxide nanostructures offer a promising solution as they possess high sensitivity and fast response, enabling rapid detection of various gas-phase indicators of battery failure. Utilizing this approach, 3D ordered tin oxide (SnO2) nanostructures were synthesized using polystyrene sphere (PS) templates of varied diameters (200–1500 nm) and precursor concentrations (0.2–0.6 mol/L) to detect key electrolyte–vapors, especially ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), released in the early stages of TR. The 3D ordered SnO2 nanostructures with ring- and nanonet-like morphologies, formed after PS template removal, were characterized, and the effects of template size and precursor concentration on their structure and sensing performance were investigated. Among various nanostructures of SnO2, nanonets achieved by a 1000 nm PS template and 0.4 mol/L precursor showed higher mesoporosity (~28 nm) and optimal EMC detection. At 210 °C, it detected 10 ppm EMC with a response of ~7.95 and response/recovery times of 14/17 s, achieving a 500 ppb detection limit alongside excellent reproducibility/stability. This study demonstrates that precise structural control of SnO2 nanostructures using templates enables sensitive EMC detection, providing an effective sensor-based strategy to enhance LIB safety. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have significant potential for large energy storage systems because of their high energy density, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the limited voltage window, poor reaction kinetics and structural instability of cathode materials are current bottlenecks which contain the further development of ZIBs. In this work, we rationally design a Ni-doped V2O5@3D Ni core/shell composite on a carbon cloth electrode (Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC) by growing Ni-V2O5 on free-standing 3D Ni metal nanonets for high-voltage and high-capacity ZIBs. Impressively, embedded Ni doping increases the interlayer spacing of V2O5, extending the working voltage and improving the zinc-ion (Zn302+) reaction kinetics of the cathode materials; at the same time, the 3D structure, with its high specific surface area and superior electronic conductivity, aids in fast Zn302+ transport. Consequently, the as-designed Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC cathodes can operate within a wide voltage window from 0.3 to 1.8 V vs. Zn30/Zn302+ and deliver a high capacity of 270 mAh g−1 (~1050 mAh cm−3) at a high current density of 0.8 A g−1. In addition, reversible Zn2+ (de)incorporation reaction mechanisms in the Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC cathodes are investigated through multiple characterization methods (SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, etc.). As a result, we achieved significant progress toward practical applications of ZIBs. Full article

Developing an advanced electrode structure is highly important for obtaining lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries with long life, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Some bottlenecks, such as large volume deformation and environmental pollution caused by the electrode preparation process, are still hindering the practical application of Li–S batteries. In this work, a new water-soluble, green, and environmentally friendly supramolecular binder (HUG) is successfully synthesized by modifying natural biopolymer (guar gum, GG) with HDI-UPy (cyanate containing pyrimidine groups). HUG can effectively resist electrode bulk deformation through a the unique three-dimensional nanonet-structure formed via covalent bonds and multiple hydrogen bonds. In addition, abundant polar groups of HUG have good adsorption properties for polysulfide and can inhibit the shuttle movement of polysulfide ions. Therefore, Li–S cell with HUG exhibits a high reversible capacity of 640 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1C with a Coulombic efficiency of 99%. Full article

Shape-controlled synthesis is an effective method for controlling the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, especially single-crystal nanomaterials, but it is difficult to control the morphology of single-crystal metallic nanomaterials. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are regarded as key materials for the new generation of human–computer interaction, which can be applied in large-scale flexible and foldable devices, large-size touch screens, transparent LED films, photovoltaic cells, etc. When used on a large scale, the junction resistance will be generated at the overlap between AgNWs and the conductivity will decrease. When stretched, the overlap of AgNWs will be easily disconnected, which will lead to a decrease in electrical conductivity or even system failure. We propose that in situ silver nanonets (AgNNs) can solve the above two problems. The AgNNs exhibited excellent electrical conductivity (0.15 Ω∙sq−1, which was 0.2 Ω∙sq−1 lower than the 0.35 Ω∙sq−1 square resistance of AgNWs) and extensibility (the theoretical tensile rate was 53%). In addition to applications in flexible stretchable sensing and display industries, they also have the potential to be used as plasmonic materials in molecular recognition, catalysis, biomedicine and other fields. The number of applications for nanobodies is steadily expanding, positioning these molecules as fast-growing biologic products in the biotechnology market. Several of their applications require protein engineering, which in turn would greatly benefit from having a reliable structural model of the nanobody of interest. However, as with antibodies, the structural modeling of nanobodies is still a challenge. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), several methods have been developed in recent years that attempt to solve the problem of protein modeling. In this study, we have compared the performance in nanobody modeling of several state-of-the-art AI-based programs, either designed for general protein modeling, such as AlphaFold2, OmegaFold, ESMFold, and Yang-Server, or specifically designed for antibody modeling, such as IgFold, and Nanonet. While all these programs performed rather well in constructing the nanobody framework and CDRs 1 and 2, modeling CDR3 still represents a big challenge. Interestingly, tailoring an AI method for antibody modeling does not necessarily translate into better results for nanobodies. Full article

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has triggered many studies worldwide in the area of biosensors, leading to innovative approaches for the quantitative assessment of COVID-19. A nanostructured field-effect transistor (FET) is one type of device shown to be ultrasensitive for virus determination. FETs can be used as transducers to analyze changes in electrical current caused by the bonding of viral molecules to the surface of the semiconducting nanomaterial layer of the FETs. Although nano-transistors require simple setups amenable to be miniaturized for point-of-care diagnostic of COVID-19, this type of sensor usually has limited sensitivity in biological fluids. The reason behind this is the shortened screening length in the presence of high ionic strength solutions. In the frame of this study, we propose a methodology consisting of the FET surface modification with a hydrogel based on the star-shaped polyethylene glycol (starPEG), which hosts specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in its porous structure. The deposition of the hydrogel increases the effective Debye length, preserving the biosensor’s sensitivity. We demonstrate the capability of silicon nanonet-based FETs to detect viral antigens and cultured viral particles in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as well as in human-purified saliva. Finally, we discriminated between positive and negative patients’ nasopharyngeal swab samples. Full article

Considering practical application and commercialization, the research of non-toxic and stable halide perovskite and its application in the field of photoelectric detection have received great attention. However, there are relatively few studies on deep ultraviolet photodetectors, and the perovskite films prepared by traditional spin-coating method have disadvantages such as uneven grain size and irregular agglomeration, which limit their device performance. Herein, uniform and ordered Cs3Cu2I5 nanonet arrays are fabricated based on monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC) templates prepared with 1 μm polystyrene (PS) spheres, which enhance light-harvesting ability. Furthermore, the performance of the lateral photodetector (PD) is significantly enhanced when using Cs3Cu2I5 nanonet compared to the pure Cs3Cu2I5 film. Under deep ultraviolet light, the Cs3Cu2I5 nanonet PD exhibits a high light responsivity of 1.66 AW−1 and a high detection up to 2.48 × 1012 Jones. Meanwhile, the unencapsulated PD has almost no response to light above 330 nm and shows remarkable stability. The above results prove that Cs3Cu2I5 nanonet can be a great potential light-absorbing layer for solar-blind deep ultraviolet PD, which can be used as light absorption layer of UV solar cell. VHH, i.e., VH domains of camelid single-chain antibodies, are very promising therapeutic agents due to their significant physicochemical advantages compared to classical mammalian antibodies. The number of experimentally solved VHH structures has significantly improved recently, which is of great help, because it offers the ability to directly work on 3D structures to humanise or improve them. Unfortunately, most VHHs do not have 3D structures. Thus, it is essential to find alternative ways to get structural information. The methods of structure prediction from the primary amino acid sequence appear essential to bypass this limitation. This review presents the most extensive overview of structure prediction methods applied for the 3D modelling of a given VHH sequence (a total of 21). Besides the historical overview, it aims at showing how model software programs have been shaping the structural predictions of VHHs. A brief explanation of each methodology is supplied, and pertinent examples of their usage are provided. Finally, we present a structure prediction case study of a recently solved VHH structure. According to some recent studies and the present analysis, AlphaFold 2 and NanoNet appear to be the best tools to predict a structural model of VHH from its sequence. Full article

This paper summarizes some of the essential aspects for the fabrication of functional devices from bottom-up silicon nanowires. In a first part, the different ways of exploiting nanowires in functional devices, from single nanowires to large assemblies of nanowires such as nanonets (two-dimensional arrays of randomly oriented nanowires), are briefly reviewed. Subsequently, the main properties of nanowires are discussed followed by those of nanonets that benefit from the large numbers of nanowires involved. After describing the main techniques used for the growth of nanowires, in the context of functional device fabrication, the different techniques used for nanowire manipulation are largely presented as they constitute one of the first fundamental steps that allows the nanowire positioning necessary to start the integration process. The advantages and disadvantages of each of these manipulation techniques are discussed. Then, the main families of nanowire-based transistors are presented; their most common integration routes and the electrical performance of the resulting devices are also presented and compared in order to highlight the relevance of these different geometries. Because they can be bottlenecks, the key technological elements necessary for the integration of silicon nanowires are detailed: the sintering technique, the importance of surface and interface engineering, and the key role of silicidation for good device performance. Finally the main application areas for these silicon nanowire devices are reviewed. Full article

Introduction: Dental segmentation in panoramic radiograph has become very relevant in dentistry, since it allows health professionals to carry out their assessments more clearly and helps them to define the best possible treatment plan for their patients. Objectives: In this work, a comparative study is carried out with four segmentation algorithms (U-Net, DCU-Net, DoubleU-Net and Nano-Net) that are prominent in the medical literature on segmentation and we evaluate their results with the current state of the art of dental segmentation in panoramic radiograph. Methods: These algorithms were tested with a dataset consisting of 1500 images, considering experiment scenarios with and without augmentation data. Results: DoubleU-Net was the model that presented the best results among the analyzed models, reaching 96.591% accuracy and 92.886% Dice using the dataset with data augmentation. Another model that stood out was Nano-Net using the dataset without data augmentation; this model achieved results close to that of the literature with only 235 thousand trainable parameters, while the literature model (TSASNet) contains 78 million. Conclusions: The results obtained in this work are satisfactory and present paths for a better and more effective dental segmentation process. Full article

A randomly oriented nanowire network, also called nanonet (NN), is a nano-microstructure that is easily integrated into devices while retaining the advantages of using nanowires. This combination presents a highly developed surface, which is promising for sensing applications while drastically reducing integration costs compared to single nanowire integration. It now remains to demonstrate its effective sensing in real conditions, its selectivity and its real advantages. With this work, we studied the feasibility of gaseous acetone detection in breath by considering the effect of external parameters, such as humidity and temperature, on the device’s sensitivity. Here the devices were made of ZnO NNs covered by SnO2 and integrated on top of microhotplates for the fine and quick control of sensing temperature with low energy consumption. The prime result is that, after a maturation period of about 15 h, the devices are sensitive to acetone concentration as low as 2 ppm of acetone at 370 °C in an alternating dry and wet (50% of relative humidity) atmosphere, even after 90 h of experiments. While still away from breath humidity conditions, which is around 90% RH, the sensor response observed at 50% RH to 2 ppm of acetone shows promising results, especially since a temperature scan allows for ethanol’s distinguishment. Nanofibers have potential applications as filters for particles with diameters <10 μm owing to their large specific surface area, macropores, and controllable geometry or diameter. The filtration efficiency can be increased by creating nanonets (<50 nm) whose diameter is smaller than that of nanofibers. This study investigates the effect of process conditions on the generation of nanonet structures from a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution containing cation surfactants; in addition, the filtration performance is analyzed. The applied electrospinning voltage and the electrostatic treatment of meltblown polypropylene (used as a substrate) are the most influential process parameters of nanonet formation. Electrospun polyacrylonitrile–cetylmethylammonium bromide (PAN–CTAB) showed a nanofiber/nanonet structure and improved thermal and mechanical properties compared with those of the electrospun PAN. The pore size distribution and filter efficiency of the PAN nanofiber web and PAN–CTAB nanofiber/nanonet web with meltblown were measured. The resulting PAN–CTAB nanofiber/nanonet air filter showed a high filtration efficiency of 99% and a low pressure drop of 7.7 mmH2O at an air flow rate of 80 L/min. The process control methods for the nanonet structures studied herein provide a new approach for developing functional materials for air-filtration applications. Full article

A nanonet consisting of ultrathin Ni nanowires (diameter <4 nm) and Ni nanoballs (diameter <20 nm) has been grown through laser ablation of a Ni target in superfluid helium. At a low Ni concentration, the nanonet consists mainly of nanowires and manifests a rectangular magnetic hysteresis loop, while an increase in the Ni concentration results in an increase in both the concentration and diameter of the nanoballs. A decrease in hysteresis loop rectangularity is observed as the concentration of the nanoball increases. We show that the composition of the system can be determined from the changes in the magnetic hysteresis loop and the temperature dependence of magnetization. The significance of the work consists of the observation of evolution of magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic nanonet, while its composition varies from nanowires to a combined nanowires–nanoballs system. We present the fabrication and electrical characteristics of nanonet-channel (NET) low-temperature polysilicon channel (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFTs) using a nanosphere-assisted patterning (NAP) technique. The NAP technique is introduced to form a nanonet-channel instead of the electron beam lithography (EBL) or conventional photolithography method. The size and space of the holes in the nanonet structure are well controlled by oxygen plasma treatment and a metal lift-off process. The nanonet-channel TFTs show improved electrical characteristics in terms of the ION/IOFF, threshold voltage, and subthreshold swing compared with conventional planar devices. The nanonet-channel devices also show a high immunity to hot-carrier injection and a lower variation of electrical characteristics. The standard deviation of VTH (σVTH) is reduced by 33% for a nanonet-channel device with a gate length of 3 μm, which is mainly attributed to the reduction of the grain boundary traps and enhanced gate controllability. These results suggest that the cost-effective NAP technique is promising for manufacturing high-performance nanonet-channel LTPS TFTs with lower electrical variations. Full article
