 Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are of paramount importance to remote sensing applications, including Earth observation and environmental monitoring. Accurate calibration of these systems is imperative to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the acquired data. A central component of the calibration process is the antenna model, which serves as a fundamental reference for characterizing the radiation pattern, gain, and overall performance of SAR systems. The present paper sets out to describe the implementation and validation of a phased-array antenna model for Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems (SARAS) in MATLAB R2024a. The antenna model was developed for utilization in the Spanish Earth observation missions PAZ and PRECURSOR-ECO. The antenna model incorporates a number of functions, which are divided into two primary modules: the first of these is the antenna pattern generation (APG) module, and the second is the antenna excitation generation (AEG) module. The present document focuses on the AEG, the function of which is to generate patterns for all required beams. These patterns are optimized and matched to specific calculated masks using an ad hoc genetic algorithm (GA). In consideration of the aforementioned factors, the AEG module generates a set of complex excitations corresponding to the required beam from different satellite operational beams, based on several radiometrically defined parameters.  Full article

Static Priority-based Multiple Access (SPMA) is an emerging and promising wireless MAC protocol which is widely used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) networks, also known as drone networks, refer to a system of interconnected UAVs that communicate and collaborate to perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These networks leverage wireless communication technologies to share data, coordinate movements, and optimize mission execution. In SPMA, traffic arriving at the UAV network node can be divided into multiple priorities according to the information timeliness, and the packets of each priority are stored in the corresponding queues with different thresholds to transmit packet, thus guaranteeing the high success rate and low latency for the highest-priority traffic. Unfortunately, the multi-priority queue scheduling of SPMA deprives the packet transmitting opportunity of low-priority traffic, which results in unfair conditions among different-priority traffic. To address this problem, in this paper we propose the method of Adaptive Credit-Based Shaper with Reinforcement Learning (abbreviated as ACBS-RL) to balance the performance of all-priority traffic. In ACBS-RL, the Credit-Based Shaper (CBS) is introduced to SPMA to provide relatively fair packet transmission opportunity among multiple traffic queues by limiting the transmission rate. Due to the dynamic situations of the wireless environment, the Q-learning-based reinforcement learning method is leveraged to adaptively adjust the parameters of CBS (i.e., idleslope and sendslope) to achieve better performance among all priority queues. The extensive simulation results show that compared with traditional SPMA protocol, the proposed ACBS-RL can increase UAV network throughput while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of all priority traffic. Critical Internet of Things (IoT) data in Fifth Generation Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (5G VANETs) demands Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) to support mission-critical vehicular applications such as autonomous driving and collision avoidance. Achieving the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for these applications remains a significant challenge. This paper proposes a novel framework integrating Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) as embedded functionalities in connected vehicles. A lightweight SDN Controller model, implemented via vehicle on-board computing resources, optimised QoS for communications between connected vehicles and the Next-Generation Node B (gNB), achieving a consistent packet delivery rate of 100%, compared to 81–96% for existing solutions leveraging SDN. Furthermore, a Software-Defined Wide-Area Network (SD-WAN) model deployed at the gNB enabled the efficient management of data, network, identity, and server access. Performance evaluations indicate that SDN and NFV are reliable and scalable technologies for virtualised and distributed 5G VANET infrastructures. Our SDN-based in-vehicle traffic classification model for dynamic resource allocation achieved 100% accuracy, outperforming existing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods with 88–99% accuracy. In addition, a significant increase of 187% in flow rates over time highlights the framework’s decreasing latency, adaptability, and scalability in supporting URLLC class guarantees for critical vehicular services. This theoretical study rigorously investigates how generative artificial intelligence reshapes decision-making in social entrepreneurship by modeling the opportunity search process through the lens of optimal stopping theory. Social entrepreneurs often face high uncertainty and resource constraints, requiring them to strategically balance the cost of continued searching with the chance of identifying socially impactful opportunities. This study develops a formal model that captures two core mechanisms of generative AI: reducing search costs and increasing the probability of mission-aligned opportunity success. The theoretical analysis yields three key findings. First, generative AI accelerates the optimal stopping point, allowing social entrepreneurs to act more quickly on high-potential opportunities by lowering cognitive and resource burdens. Second, the influence of increased success probability outweighs that of reduced search costs, underscoring the strategic importance of insight quality over efficiency in socially embedded contexts. Third, the benefits of generative AI are amplified in uncertain environments, where it helps navigate complexity and mitigate information asymmetry. These insights contribute to a deeper conceptual understanding of how intelligent technologies transform the cognitive and strategic dimensions of social entrepreneurship, and they offer empirically testable propositions for future research at the intersection of AI, innovation, and mission-driven opportunity pursuit. Variable-thrust liquid rocket engines are essential for precision landing in deep-space exploration, reusable launch vehicle recovery, high-accuracy orbital maneuvers, and emergency obstacle evasions of space drones. However, with the increasingly complex space missions, challenges remain with the development of different technical schemes. In view of these issues, this paper systematically reviews the technology’s evolution through mechanical throttling, electromechanical precision regulation, and commercial space-driven deep throttling. Then, the development of key variable thrust technologies for liquid rocket engines is summarized from the perspective of thrust regulation and control strategy. For instance, thrust regulation requires synergistic flow control devices and adjustable pintle injectors to dynamically match flow rates with injection pressure drops, ensuring combustion stability across wide thrust ranges—particularly under extreme conditions during space drones’ high-maneuver orbital adjustments—though pintle injector optimization for such scenarios remains challenging. System control must address strong multivariable coupling, response delays, and high-disturbance environments, as well as bottlenecks in sensor reliability and nonlinear modeling. Furthermore, prospects are made in response to the research progress, and breakthroughs are required in cryogenic wide-range flow regulation for liquid oxygen-methane propellants, combustion stability during deep throttling, and AI-based intelligent control to support space drones’ autonomous orbital transfer, rapid reusability, and on-demand trajectory correction in complex deep-space missions. Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) operations in complex ocean engineering scenarios necessitate robust navigation, guidance, and control technologies. These systems require reliable sensor-based object detection and efficient, safe, and energy-aware path planning. To address these multifaceted challenges, this paper proposes a novel synergistic AI framework. The framework integrates (1) a novel adaptation of the Swin-Transformer to generate a dense, semantic risk map from raw visual data, enabling the system to interpret ambiguous marine conditions like sun glare and choppy water, enabling real-time environmental understanding crucial for guidance; (2) a Transformer-enhanced A-star (T-ASTAR) algorithm with spatio-temporal attentional guidance to generate globally near-optimal and energy-aware static paths; (3) a domain-adapted TD3 agent featuring a novel energy-aware reward function that optimizes for USV hydrodynamic constraints, making it suitable for long-endurance missions tailored for USVs to perform dynamic local path optimization and real-time obstacle avoidance, forming a key control element; and (4) CUDA acceleration to meet the computational demands of real-time ocean engineering applications. Simulations and real-world data verify the framework’s superiority over benchmarks like A* and RRT, achieving 30% shorter routes, 70% fewer turns, 64.7% fewer dynamic collisions, and a 215-fold speed improvement in map generation via CUDA acceleration. This research underscores the importance of integrating powerful AI components within a hierarchical synergy, encompassing AI-based perception, hierarchical decision planning for guidance, and multi-stage optimal search algorithms for control. The proposed solution significantly advances USV autonomy, addressing critical ocean engineering challenges such as navigation in dynamic environments, object avoidance, and energy-constrained operations for unmanned maritime systems. Introduction: Poorly designed safety job descriptions may have a negative impact on occupational safety and health (OSH) performance. Firstly, they limit the chances of hiring highly qualified safety professionals who are vital to the success of OSH management systems in organizations. Secondly, the relationship between the presence of qualified safety professionals and the safety culture (and performance) in an organization is reciprocal. Thirdly, the low quality of job descriptions limits exploring the proper competencies needed by safety professionals before they are hired. The safety professional is thus uncertain of what level of education or training and which skills they should attain. Objectives: The main goal of the study is to integrate the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) with importance–performance analysis (IPA) to evaluate job descriptions in multiple sectors. Results: The results of the study indicate that it is vital to clearly define job levels, the overall mission, key responsibilities, time-consuming tasks, required education/certifications, and necessary personal abilities in safety job descriptions. This clarity enhances recruitment, fairness, performance management, and succession planning. The organization can then attract and retain top talent, improve performance, foster a strong safety culture, create realistic job expectations, increase employee satisfaction and productivity, and ensure that competent individuals are hired, ultimately leading to a safer and more productive workplace. Conclusion: The outcomes of this study provide a robust framework that can and should be used as a guideline to professionalize job description development and enhance talent acquisition strategies. Whistler-mode waves, electromagnetic emissions with frequencies between the lower hybrid and electron cyclotron frequencies, are ubiquitous in planetary magnetotails. They are known to play a vital role in electron scattering and acceleration, originating primarily within strong magnetic field regions behind dipolarization fronts (DFs). In contrast to this established knowledge, we present a comprehensive analysis of whistler-mode waves generated locally within weak magnetic field regions ahead of DFs, utilizing high-cadence measurements from the MMS mission. By resolving the wave dispersion relations, we demonstrate that these emissions arise from cyclotron resonance with local electrons exhibiting weak perpendicular temperature anisotropy (Ae < 1.2). We further propose that this anisotropy may develop due to magnetic mirror structures forming upstream of DFs. Our findings challenge the conventional view that whistler-mode generation requires strong magnetic fields near DFs, providing new insights into understanding wave excitation mechanisms in planetary magnetotails. In space gravitational wave detection, various physical effects in the spacecraft, such as self-gravity, electricity, and magnetism, will introduce undesirable parasitic stiffness. The coupling noise between stiffness and the motion states of the test mass critically affects the performance of scientific detection, making accurate stiffness identification crucial. In response to the question, this paper proposes a method to optimize the test mass motion state for enhancing stiffness identification performance. First, the dynamics of the test mass are studied and a recursive least squares algorithm is applied for the implementation of on-orbit stiffness identification. Then, the motion state of the test mass is parametrically characterized by multi-frequency sinusoidal signals as the variable to be optimized, with the optimization objectives and constraints of stiffness identification defined based on convergence time, convergence accuracy, and engineering requirements. To tackle the dual-objective, computationally expensive nature of the problem, a multigranularity surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm with individual progressive constraints (MGSAEA-IPC) is proposed. A fuzzy radial basis function neural network PID (FRBF-PID) controller is also designed to address complex control needs under varying motion states. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the convergence time after optimization is less than 2 min, and the convergence accuracy is less than 1.5 × 10−10 s−2. This study can provide ideas and design references for subsequent related identification and control missions. Full article

This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

Rapid vaccine availability is essential for effective epidemic and pandemic response. Building on the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) 100 Days Mission, which aims to have new vaccines ready for initial authorization and manufacturing at scale within 100 days of recognition of a pandemic pathogen, the CEPI has developed a Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) Rapid Response Framework to define technical and logistical CMC requirements to enable rapid vaccine availability. Central to this framework is the availability of adaptable vaccine platforms that can be readily tailored to emerging pathogens. To support strategic decision-making and identify gaps in platform capabilities, CEPI has created the Platform Readiness Dashboard. This tool provides a structured, multi-dimensional initial assessment of platform maturity across six key categories: Adaptability, Compatibility, Suitability, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Facility Readiness. Each category includes specific technical and operational considerations scored using a color-coded system to reflect outbreak response readiness level. This Dashboard aims to enable vaccine developers, manufacturers, funders, and outbreak response teams to evaluate platform strengths and limitations at any given time, informing funding, preparedness and response activities. By offering a dynamic view of essential platform readiness indicators, the dashboard can communicate progress supporting faster responses to future health emergencies. Full article

Future planetary exploration missions will rely heavily on efficient human–robot interaction to ensure astronaut safety and maximize scientific return. In this context, digital twins offer a promising tool for planning, simulating, and optimizing extravehicular activities. This study presents the development and evaluation of a digital twin for the AMADEE-24 analog Mars mission, organized by the Austrian Space Forum and conducted in Armenia in March 2024. Alternative local positioning methods were evaluated to enhance the system’s utility in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. The digital twin integrates telemetry from the Aouda space suit simulators, inertial measurement unit motion capture (IMU-MoCap), and sensor data from the Intuitive Rover Operation and Collecting Samples (iROCS) rover. All nine experiment runs were reconstructed successfully by the developed digital twin. A comparative analysis of localization methods found that Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)-based rover positioning and IMU-MoCap localization of the astronaut matched Global Positioning System (GPS) performance. Adaptive Cluster Detection showed significantly higher deviations compared to the previous GNSS alternatives. However, the IMU-MoCap method was limited by discontinuous segment-wise measurements, which required intermittent GPS recalibration. Despite these limitations, the results highlight the potential of alternative localization techniques for digital twin integration. Full article

The classification of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) from magnetometer data is a critical but challenging task, frequently hindered by the data scarcity required for training robust machine learning models. To address this, we leverage a high-fidelity digital twin to generate a comprehensive dataset of magnetometer signals from both UXO and non-UXO objects, incorporating complex remanent magnetization effects. In this study, we design and evaluate a custom Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for UXO classification and compare it against classical machine learning baseline, including Random Forest and kNN. Our CNN model achieves a balanced accuracy of 84.65%, significantly outperforming traditional models that exhibit performance collapse under slight distortions such as additive noise, drift, and time-wrapping. Additionally, we present a compact two-block CNN variant that retains competitive accuracy while reducing the number of learnable parameters by approximately 33%, making it suitable for real-time onboard classification in underwater vehicle missions. Through extensive ablation studies, we confirm that architectural components, such as residual skip connections and element-wise batch normalization, are crucial for achieving model stability and performance. The results also highlight the practical implications of underwater vehicles for survey design, emphasizing the need to mitigate signal drift and maintain constant survey speeds. This work not only provides a robust deep learning model for UXO classification, but also offers actionable suggestions for improving both model deployment and data acquisition protocols in the field. This article addresses the epistemic and political problem of self-referentiality in theology within the context of post-secular societies as a demand for public relevance of faculties of theology within the 21st-century university. It focuses on the epistemological emergence of public theology as a distinct knowledge, such as human rights, and ecological thinking, contributing to the public mission of knowledge production and interdisciplinary engagement. This study applies Michel Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical methods in dialogue with Michel de Certeau’s insights into the archaeology of religious practices through a multi-layered analytical approach, including archaeology of knowledge, apparatuses of power, pastoral government, and spirituality as a genealogy of ethics. As a result of the analysis, it examines the historical conditions of possibility for the emergence of a public theology and how it needs to be thought synchronously with other formations of knowledge, allowing theology to move beyond its self-referential model of approaching dogma and the social practices derived from it. This article concludes programmatically that the development of public theology requires an epistemological reconfiguration to displace its self-referentiality through critical engagement with a public rationality framework as an essential task for the public relevance and contribution of theology within contemporary universities and plural societies. The New Space movement led to an exponential increase in the number of the smallest satellites in orbit in the last two decades. The number of required communication channels increased with that as well and revealed the limitations of classical radio frequency channels. Free-space optical communication overcomes these challenges and has been successfully demonstrated, with operational systems in orbit on large and small satellites. The next step is to miniaturize the technology of laser communication to make it usable on CubeSats. Thus, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) developed, together with Tesat-Spacecom GmbH & Co. KG in Backnang, Germany, a highly miniaturized and power-efficient laser terminal, which is based on a potential customer’s use case. OSIRIS4CubeSat uses a new patented design that combines electronics and optomechanics into a single system architecture to achieve a high compactness following the CubeSat standard. Interfaces and software protocols that follow established standards allowed for an easy transition to the industry for a commercial mass market. The successful demonstration of OSIRIS4CubeSat during the PIXL-1 mission proved its capabilities and the advantages of free-space optical communication in the final environment. This paper gives an overview of the system architecture and the development of the single subsystems. The system’s capabilities are verified by the already published in-orbit demonstration results.
