Introduction: Sexual minority men (SMM) are at increased risk for psychosocial stressor exposure, substance use, and poor mental health relative to heterosexual men. While the burden of mental health is growing in the United States, among SMM these trends are increasing at a greater rate, driving health disparities. Methods: Framed within a minority stress framework, these analyses examine how stressors explain substance use and poorer mental health over time. Participants were asked questions on stressor exposure (stigma, discrimination, internalized homophobia, perceived stress), mental health (anxiety, depression, PTSD), and substance use (alcohol to intoxication, club drugs, poly club drugs) over 36 months among 528 SMM in NYC. Results: Perceived stress increased frequency of all substance use, whereas discrimination decreased days of club and poly club drug use. Depression severity predicted increased days of club drug and poly club drug use. PTSD severity predicted increased days of club drug and poly club drug use. Conclusion: We are able to expand on the literature with granular substance use data to highlight associations with stressors and mental health. These findings support an increased need for systematic policy solutions and public health interventions to address drivers of substance use disparities among young SMM. Full article

Soil salinization is a major environmental constraint that poses a significant threat to global agricultural productivity and food security. Coix lacryma-jobi L., a minor cereal crop that is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties, displays moderate susceptibility to salinity stress. Although exogenous treatments have been demonstrated to enhance plant resilience against various biotic and abiotic stresses, the potential of nano-silicon (NaSi), melatonin (MT), and their combined application in mitigating salinity-induced damage, particularly in relation to the medicinal properties of this medicinal and edible crop, remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of exogenous NaSi and MT application on Coix under salinity stress using two varieties with contrasting salinity tolerances. The plants were subjected to salinity stress and treated with NaSi, MT, or a combination of both. The results revealed that salinity stress significantly impaired the agronomic traits, physiological performance, and accumulation of medicinal compounds of Coix. Exogenous MT application effectively alleviated salinity-induced damage to agronomic and physiological parameters, exhibiting superior protective effects compared to NaSi treatment. Strikingly, the combined application of MT and NaSi demonstrated synergistic effects, leading to substantial improvements in growth and physiological indices. However, the medicinal components were only marginally affected by exogenous treatments under both control and salinity-stressed conditions. Further clarification of the molecular mechanisms underlying salinity stress responses and exogenous substance-induced effects is critical to achieving a comprehensive understanding of these protective mechanisms. Asia minor bluegrass (Polypogon fugax), a widespread Poaceae weed, exhibits broad tolerance to abiotic stresses. Validated reference genes (RGs) for reliable RT-qPCR normalization in this ecologically and agriculturally significant species remain unidentified. This study identified eight candidate RGs using transcriptome data from seedling tissues. We assessed the expression stability of these eight RGs across various abiotic stresses and developmental stages using Delta Ct, BestKeeper, geNorm, and NormFinder algorithms. A comprehensive stability ranking was generated using RefFinder, with validation performed using the target genes COR413 and P5CS. Results identified EIF4A and TUB as the optimal RG combination for normalizing gene expression during heat stress, cold stress, and growth stages. EIF4A and ACT were most stable under drought stress, EIF4A and 28S under salt stress, and EIF4A and EF-1 under cadmium (Cd) stress. Furthermore, EIF4A and UBQ demonstrated optimal stability under herbicide stress. Additionally, application of validated RGs revealed higher acetyl-CoA carboxylase gene (ACCase) expression in one herbicide-resistant population, suggesting target-site gene overexpression contributes to resistance. This work presents the first systematic evaluation of RGs in P. fugax. The identified stable RGs provide essential tools for future gene expression studies on growth and abiotic stress responses in this species, facilitating deeper insights into the molecular basis of its weediness and adaptability. Non-uniform temperature fields are developed during the welding of studs in steel–concrete composite bridges. Due to uneven thermal expansion and reversible solid-state phase transformations between ferrite/martensite and austenite structures within the materials, residual stresses are induced, which ultimately degrades the mechanical performance of the structure. For a better understanding of the influence on steel–concrete composite bridges’ structural behavior by residual stress, accurate simulation of the spatio-temporal temperature distribution during stud welding under practical engineering conditions is critical. This study introduces a precise simulation method for temperature evolution during stud welding, in which the Gaussian heat source model was applied. The simulated results were validated by real welding temperature fields measured by the infrared thermography technique. The maximum error between the measured and simulated peak temperatures was 5%, demonstrating good agreement between the measured and simulated temperature distributions. Sensitivity analyses on input current and plate thickness were conducted. The results showed a positive correlation between peak temperature and input current. With lower input current, flatter temperature gradients were observed in both the transverse and thickness directions of the steel plate. Additionally, plate thickness exhibited minimal influence on radial peak temperature, with a maximum observed difference of 130 °C. However, its effect on peak temperature in the thickness direction was significant, yielding a maximum difference of approximately 1000 °C. The thermal influence of group studs was also investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that welding a new stud adjacent to existing ones introduced only minor disturbances to the established temperature field. The maximum peak temperature difference before and after welding was approximately 100 °C. Full article

This study explored the experiences of Hungarian minority parents of children with severe disabilities from Romania. Examining individual life paths and becoming a parent is difficult in all aspects, but the issue of parental responsibility for raising a child with a severe disability suggests a much more complex approach. Participants were parents (female = 8; male = 3) who were purposively sampled from an urban setting (Bihor area) and whose children attended SEN schools in the same area. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and were thematically analysed. It turned out from the interviews that the challenges parents of children with severe disabilities encounter at home, school, and in society are accumulated emotional stress and exhaustion; however, they also face material challenges. The analysis also revealed that the parents were unsure of what was expected of them in making educational or habilitation–rehabilitation decisions on behalf of their children. The parents’ difficulty with decision-making and their unpreparedness put them under serious stress, often characterized by depressive life stages. The findings reveal the need for ongoing professional development and the establishment of organizational–community networks. Parents of children with disabilities face serious, unresolved challenges that are difficult to overcome. In order to overcome these challenges, we need to develop policies that take the needs of parents into consideration. Full article

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone. Headless compression screws became the gold standard for fixation, but the ideal screw diameter remains debated. This study investigates the relative benefit of using a larger screw diameter to improve stability in typical scaphoid fractures. It also examines the effects of preload and screw length on mechanical behaviour. A finite element (FE) model of a mid-waist scaphoid fracture was created. Screws from Medartis (1.7 mm, 2.2 mm, and 3.0 mm diameter; 23 mm length) were placed along the longitudinal axis. Boundary and loading conditions matched prior studies. Interfragmentary displacement (IFD) and von Mises stress were compared across screw sizes. The effects of screw length and preload were also evaluated. Maximum in-plane IFD was 2.08 mm (1.7 mm screw), 0.53 mm (2.2 mm), and 0.27 mm (3.0 mm). The 1.7 mm screw exceeded the scaphoid’s average ultimate stress (60.51 MPa). Increasing preload reduced IFD, especially above 60 N. Screws longer than 1.5 times the mid-waist diameter offered no added benefit. Larger screws provide better biomechanical fracture stability. However, the gain from 2.2 mm to 3.0 mm is minor, while 1.7 mm screws lack sufficient strength. The 2.2 mm screw offers a good balance of stability and bone preservation, making it the preferred choice. Full article

Objective: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a Culinary Medicine and Wellness (CMW) class among undergraduate college students attending a U.S. Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), as well as their food security, mental health status, and eating behaviors. Methods: This pre- and post-intervention study was conducted at an MSI in a Southeastern U.S. University, where students enrolled in a 15-week, three-credit CMW class equivalent to 2.5 h per week and received instruction on cooking and preparing healthy meals on a budget. The primary outcomes were acceptability and feasibility of the CMW class. Participants’ food security status, mental health status, and fruit and vegetable intake were also assessed. Program evaluation utilized thematic analysis and descriptive statistics, and trend analyses of outcomes were performed. Results: Eleven participants completed both surveys. The average age was 24 years, with 73% identifying as Black/African American. All participants were female and experienced low or very low food insecurity, and most reported moderate stress levels. All participants reported they would recommend the CMW class to others, with 73% rating it as excellent. Additionally, 82% felt they had learned valuable cooking and budgeting skills. Conclusions: The acceptability and feasibility of a CMW class among college students at an MSI suggests a promising approach to improving cooking skills, enhancing nutrition knowledge, increasing fruit and vegetable intake, and reducing stress. Background/Objectives: Dental anxiety in children is a common issue that can hinder the delivery of effective dental care. Traditional approaches to managing this are often insufficient or involve pharmacological interventions. This study shows the potential of virtual reality (VR) to aid in reducing anxiety in children undergoing simple dental procedures. By immersing children in relaxing VR environments (such as beaches, forests, mountains, or underwater scenes with calm music), the objective is to assess VR’s effectiveness in calming pediatrics patients during these procedures. Methods: Children scheduled for minor dental treatments wore a wearable device that monitored pulse, perspiration, and stress levels. Each child’s baseline data was collected without the VR headset, followed by data collection during VR exposure before and during dental procedures. VR scenarios ranged from soothing nature scenes to animated cartoons, designed to foster relaxation. Results: The data collected showed a reduction in physiological indicators of stress, such as lower heart rate and reduced perspiration, when the VR headset was used. Children appeared more relaxed, with a calmer response during the procedure itself, compared to baseline levels without VR. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence supporting VR as an effective tool for reducing anxiety and stress in pediatric dental patients. By offering an engaging, immersive experience, VR can serve as an alternative or complementary approach to traditional anxiety management strategies in pediatric dentistry, potentially improving patient comfort and cooperation during dental procedures. Further research could determine if VR may serve as an alternative to local anesthesia for non-intrusive pediatric dental procedures. Full article

Background: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a serious public health concern, with sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) at elevated risk due to minority stress and systemic inequalities. This systematic review examines individual, relational, and contextual risk factors for TDV among SGMY. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and APA PsycInfo on 10 December 2024. Studies published between 2014 and 2024 focusing on teen dating violence (TDV) as an outcome among sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) aged 13–19 were included. Study selection was independently performed by multiple reviewers using Rayyan. Risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. Due to heterogeneity in the study design and measurement tools, a narrative synthesis was conducted. Results: Six risk domains emerged: (1) Demographic/Identity (e.g., gender, orientation, or race); (2) Psychological/Behavioral (e.g., distress or substance use); (3) Violence/Bullying (e.g., cyberbullying or exclusion); (4) Family/Sexual Abuse (e.g., family rejection); (5) Relational/Social (e.g., partner outing); and (6) School/Community (e.g., non-inclusive environments). Bisexual, pansexual, transgender, and racialized youth showed heightened vulnerability. Most studies were conducted in the USA and relied on non-validated TDV measures and cross-sectional designs, limiting comparability and causal inference. Conclusions: SGMY face unique, often overlooked TDV risks. There is a need for intersectional, longitudinal research and inclusive, developmentally appropriate prevention efforts that address both relational and structural factors. Diabetes is the world’s leading cause of renal and premature cardiovascular disease. There are marked differences between groups of patients with different ethnicities in their susceptibility to diabetes and its renal and cardiovascular complications. Novel markers of developing diabetes complications are related to disturbances in oxidative metabolism. In this cross-sectional study, we measured the arterial stiffness in patients of differing ethnicities with type 2 diabetes mellitus and assessed the relationship of their ethnicity with systemic markers of oxidative stress. Patients from black, African and Caribbean, and Asian minor ethnic groups were studied, with white patients with T2DM (n = 170) without evidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The vascular stiffness was measured by infrared finger-photoplethysmography. The oxidative stress burden was assessed by measuring the urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), activities of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx-3), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and concentration of selenium. The vascular stiffness and 8-OHdG were higher in the white than in the Black patients (9.68 m/s vs. 9.26 m/s, p = 0.021 and 292.8 ng/mL vs. 200.9 ng/mL, p = 0.0027, respectively). Meanwhile, the GPx-3 and SOD activities and selenium were lower in the white than in the Black patients (283.3 U/L vs. 440.4 U/L, p < 0.0001; 37.5 U/L vs. 75.6 U/L, p = 0.0007; and 1.14 vs. 1.28 µmol/L, p = 0.0001, respectively). In regression modelling, the 8-OHdG/creatinine ratio was an independent predictor of vascular stiffness in the white patient group (β = 0.23 m/s per unit increase in ln(8-OHdG/creatinine) [95% CI, 0.03 to 0.42]; p = 0.021) but not in the Black patient group (p = 0.29). Increased vascular stiffness, lower endogenous antioxidant defense, and greater levels of oxidative damage were found in patients of white ethnicity, which could contribute to the higher incidence of CVD compared with patients from Black minor ethnic groups with diabetic renal disease. Background/Objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder marked by relapsing episodes of gastrointestinal inflammation, potentially causing severe symptoms. These unpredictable acute episodes, paired with chronic disabilities, such as fatigue and malabsorption, and extensive pharmacological and surgical treatments, can severely impact patients’ quality of life. This study aimed to assess which aspects of the patients’ lives IBD impacts, and how IBD patients perceive their disease. Methods: All IBD patients who had an appointment in our tertiary centre from 10 October 2022 to 21 February 2023, were invited to complete anonymous questionnaires. The questionnaires used were IBDQ-32, WPAI, and IBD Disk, all designed specifically to assess the IBD patients’ quality of life. Results: The questionnaires were completed by a total of 159 participants, 51% of whom were males, 47.9% who had UC, and 49.4% who had been or were currently treated with biologics. There was no statistically significant difference in the answers from patients with CD compared to UC, as well as those treated with conventional therapies compared to those with advanced options. Most of them considered their health to be good, but only a few (12.8%) claimed, with absolute certainty, that their health was at the level of healthy individuals, and only 13 (8.3%) claimed their health was excellent. A total of 95 (60.1%) participants expressed at least minor limitations when performing strenuous activities, but lighter forms of activities were not affected as much by the disease. A significant portion (48.7%) of the participants believed they were exposed to more stress than others, and their current pharmacological therapy was the cause of fear in 26.5%. A total of 119 (75.3%) participants believed that the disease affected their lives at least mildly during remission. Conclusions: Our study showed that IBD patients have diminished quality of life, not only in the periods of active disease but also during clinical remission. The decline in quality of life was not solely attributed to physical symptoms, as previously thought. Other factors, such as mental health issues, were found to impact quality of life as well. We firmly believe that restoring quality of life should be emphasised in guidelines as one of the most important therapeutic goals. Full article

Introduction: Access of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth to gender-affirming medical care (GAMC) has become a contentious topic in the West, with many members of the general population, politicians, and even some experts and academic researchers voicing concerns about possible adverse effects of GAMC on the mental and physical health of TGD youth. Due to these concerns, recent years have seen a significant rise in legislation restricting TGD youth from accessing GAMC in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. However, in this critical review of the literature on the psychological (e.g., anxiety, depression, suicide, and body satisfaction) and physical (e.g., bone health, cognitive function, and fertility) health outcomes associated with GAMC among TGD youth, we argue that, given the state of current research, youth should not be restricted from accessing GAMC. Conclusions: Our findings reinforce the importance of close monitoring by doctors, counselling for TGD youth with respect to potential risks, and increased studies on the topic, especially those focusing on reproductive health. Global warming represents one of the most pressing environmental challenges to cold-water fish farming. Heat stress markedly alters the mucosal symbiotic microbiota and intestinal microbial metabolites in fish, posing substantial barriers to the healthy artificial breeding of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). However, the relationship between mucosal commensal microbiota, intestinal metabolites, and host environmental adaptability under heat stress remains poorly understood. In this study, rainbow trout reared at optimal temperature (16 °C) served as controls, while those exposed to maximum tolerated temperature (24 °C, 21 d) comprised the heat stress group. Using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS), we analysed the mucosal commensal microbiota—including gastrointestinal digesta, gastrointestinal mucosa, skin mucus, and gill mucosa—and intestinal metabolites of rainbow trout under heat stress conditions to explore adaptive and regulatory mechanisms. Analysis of microbial composition and diversity revealed that heat stress exerted the greatest impact on the diversity of gill and skin mucus microbiota, followed by gastrointestinal digesta, with relatively minor effects on the gastrointestinal mucosa. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes were predominant in the stomach, intestine, and surface mucosa. At the genus level, Acinetobacter showed the greatest increase in abundance in skin and gill mucosa under heat stress, while Enterobacteriaceae exhibited the most pronounced increase in intestinal digesta, gastric digesta, and gastric mucosa. Differential metabolites in the intestinal digesta under heat stress were predominantly enriched in pathways associated with amino acid metabolism, particularly tryptophan metabolism. This study provides a comprehensive characterisation of microbiota and metabolic profile alterations in rainbow trout under heat stress condition, offering a theoretical foundation for understanding the response mechanisms of fish commensal microbiota to thermal stress. Research on the Mechanism of Wellbore Strengthening Influence Based on Finite Element Model

Wellbore strengthening is a widely applied technique to mitigate wellbore leakage during drilling operations in complex formations characterized by narrow mud weight windows. This method enhances the wellbore’s pressure-bearing capacity by using lost circulation materials (LCMs) to bridge natural or induced fractures. In recent years, advanced sealing technologies such as wellbore reinforcement have gradually been applied and developed, but their related influencing factors and mechanisms have not been deeply revealed. This article uses the Cohesive module of ABAQUS to establish a wellbore fracture sealing model. By establishing a porous elastic finite element model, the elastic mechanics theory of porous media is combined with finite element theory. Under the influence of factors such as anisotropy of geostress, reservoir elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and fracturing fluid viscosity, the circumferential stress distribution of the wellbore after fracture sealing is simulated. The simulation results show that stress anisotropy has a significant impact on Mises stress. The greater the stress anisotropy, the more likely the wellbore sealing is to cause wellbore rupture or instability. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a suitable wellbore direction to avoid high stress concentration areas. The elastic modulus of the reservoir is an important parameter that affects wellbore stability and fracturing response, especially in high modulus reservoirs where the effect is more pronounced. Poisson’s ratio has a relatively minor impact. In fracturing and plugging design, the viscosity of fracturing fluid should be reasonably selected to balance the relationship between plugging efficiency and wellbore mechanical stability. In the actual drilling process, priority should be given to choosing the wellbore direction that avoids high stress concentration areas to reduce the risk of wellbore rupture or instability induced by plugging, specify targeted wellbore reinforcement strategies for high elastic modulus reservoirs; using models to predict fracture response characteristics can guide the use of sealing materials, achieve efficient bridging and stable sealing, and enhance the maximum pressure bearing capacity of the wellbore. By simulating the changes in circumferential stress distribution of the wellbore after fracture sealing, the mechanism of wellbore reinforcement was explored to provide guidance for mechanism analysis and on-site application. Influence of Stent Structure on Mechanical and Degradation Properties of Poly (Lactic Acid) Vascular Stent

Biodegradable vascular stents (BVSs) face challenges related to inadequate mechanical strength, which can lead to adverse clinical outcomes. Improving the mechanical behavior of biodegradable vascular stents through structural design has been extensively explored. However, the corresponding effects of these mechanical enhancements on degradation characteristics remain under-investigated. The present work focuses on examining how different stent design strategies affect the mechanical behavior and degradation characteristics of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) stents. The commercial PLA stent DESolve was adopted, and nine modified stents were constructed based on the geometrical configuration of the DESolve stent. The mechanical properties of the modified stents during radial crimping and three-point bending simulations were thoroughly studied. The degradation dynamics of the stents were characterized by four indices (i.e., mean number average molecular weight, residual volume fraction, mean von Mises stress, and stent diameter). The results indicated that both the widening ratio and direction affected the mechanical performance of the stents by increasing the radial stiffness and radial strength, minimizing recoil%, and decreasing the bending flexibility. Although the widening direction had a relatively minor influence on stent degradation, the associated increase in material volume contributed to an improved volumetric integrity and enhanced lumen preservation. This study established a theoretical basis for evaluating both the mechanical and degradation behaviors of PLA stents, offering valuable insights for future structural design optimization.
