Current geological site assessment models focus on examining stable natural features and neglect measuring surrounding industrial and environmental hazards. This methodological deficiency is clearly evident in the management of technological heritage in existing or abandoned mining areas. This research presents the modified GAMGES geo-environmental assessment model to address this practical gap in the regional planning of industrial geoparks. The proposed model integrates the geo-environmental safety (GES) block as a mathematical discount factor that measures the risks of surface deformation, seismic activity, gas emissions, and pollution from mining waste. The research applies the developed criteria to the Kirov Mine database in the Kuzbass Basin, renowned for its combined technological and geodynamic characteristics. The numerical results demonstrate a lower overall site value compared to the conventional model due to the detection of active ground fissures and continuous methane migration across tectonic faults. The model provides planners with a quantitative decision support framework for dividing industrial heritage sites into multiple safety zones that ensure visitor protection and the security of sustainable tourism facilities. In recent years, the agentive role of youth groups in urban regeneration has garnered increasing academic attention. As vital carriers of urban cultural heritage, the ways in which historic districts can leverage youth dynamics to achieve vitality revitalization have emerged as a key research issue. This study selects the Fayuan Temple Historic and Cultural District in Beijing as an empirical case, constructs a public space evaluation system grounded in the concept of “youth-friendliness,” adopts a mixed-method approach integrating field surveys, questionnaire administration, and multi-source data mining, and employs Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) modeling for deconstruction. Based on behavioral characteristic differences, youth within the district are categorized into two groups: “resident/local youth” and “transient visiting youth.” The comprehensive experience quality scores were 3.559 (Fair) for resident and local youth and 3.85 (Fair) for temporary visitors, with cultural space scoring highest for both groups. Resident youth demonstrate stronger demands for renewal concerning the completeness of cultural facilities, diversity of commercial formats, and street navigability. Transient visiting youth, by contrast, exhibit greater concern for eight factors: pedestrian safety and comfort, static traffic order, diversity of commercial formats, quality of consumption environment, richness of social venues, pleasantness of spatial scale, landscape interactivity, and street navigability. These findings indicate that youth groups with varying interactive relationships with historic districts possess significantly heterogeneous needs regarding public space utilization, and their expectations for historic district regeneration also manifest differentiated characteristics. This provides a scientific basis for formulating precise, multi-layered strategies for district renewal. Full article

In the context of China’s shift from incremental urban expansion to stock-based regeneration, the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage is no longer limited to physical transformation but increasingly involves spatial reintegration, cultural memory, and public value reconstruction. Taking Tianjin as a case study, this paper introduces Scene Theory into an urban-regeneration framework and combines kernel density analysis, field observation, case comparison, and online public-perception text mining. The study first examines the spatial distribution, accessibility conditions, and renewal typologies of industrial heritage sites in Tianjin. It then uses online comments from Xiaohongshu and Ctrip as supplementary perception data to analyze how different renewal models are experienced in relation to neighborhood environment, material facilities, activities, authenticity, theatricality, and legitimacy. The results show that creative industrial parks, museum-oriented renewal, and commercial renewal differ significantly in spatial location, activity organization, cultural expression, and public recognition. Common problems include uneven accessibility, superficial representation of industrial symbols, excessive consumption orientation, weak continuity of labor memory, limited community participation, and the potential exclusion of local users. Based on these findings, the paper proposes an integrated renewal strategy that emphasizes spatial network repair, authenticity-oriented design, everyday public use, community participation, and inclusive governance. The study provides an analytical framework and practical references for the regeneration of industrial heritage in Tianjin and other post-industrial cities. Full article

This paper introduces the concept of rural mining, defined as the systematic recovery and reuse of construction materials from abandoned rural building stock within a circular economy framework. Although rural depopulation and its consequences have been extensively studied, the material dimension of abandonment, the substantial quantities of construction materials embedded in deserted rural settlements, has received comparatively little systematic analytical attention. Three interconnected contributions respond to this gap. First, the paper operationalizes the concept of rural mining, consolidating a term that remains terminologically rare and theoretically underdeveloped. Second, it develops the Rural Mining Potential Assessment Framework (RMPAF), an original ten-criterion analytical tool spanning the material, infrastructural, legal, economic, institutional, cultural, and technological dimensions of rural mining potential. Third, it articulates an ethical foundation establishing the non-negotiable boundaries of rural mining practice. The RMPAF is applied through a comparative assessment of three European national contexts, Serbia, Slovenia, and Greece, revealing that rural mining potential is neither uniform nor straightforwardly derivable from the scale of depopulation alone. Across all three contexts, ownership fragmentation, the absence of legal recognition, and the lack of dedicated policy instruments emerge as shared structural barriers. Development of operational protocols for culturally mediated rural mining and legal recognition of the concept are identified as priority directions for future action. Full article

As urban renewal progresses, transforming old industrial plants into sports service complexes has become a prevalent strategy to revitalize urban stock space. To evaluate the actual performance of this spatial reproduction from the users’ perspective, this study analyzes 3702 consumer reviews from five typical Chinese sports service complexes using an interdisciplinary text-mining framework. We employ the LDA topic model to extract core dimensions of consumer concern and utilize the DistilBERT model for fine-grained, sentence-level sentiment computation. The results reveal that consumer attention spans five key topics: venue services, cultural business districts, sports training, industrial integration, and heritage utilization. Critically, the sentiment analysis uncovers a structural paradox: while topics associated with cultural and heritage utilization trigger highly positive emotions and strong place identity, core functional modules like sports training and venue services generate substantial negative feedback. This disparity highlights a profound friction between rigid historical industrial architectural structures and the flexible demands of modern servicescapes, reflecting a clear path dependency in spatial transformation. Based on these theoretical and empirical findings, we propose targeted optimization strategies, including the structural reconstruction of training services and the flexible upgrading of basic venue facilities, to transition these complexes from initial physical construction toward long-term, service-oriented operation. User-generated content (UGC) offers large-scale, naturalistic data for examining tourism destination image. Focusing on the Historic Centre of Macao (HCM), a World Cultural Heritage site, this study collected 3781 tourist reviews from Rednote, Ctrip, Dianping, and TripAdvisor and developed a multi-model text-mining framework integrating TF-IDF, BERTopic, and RoBERTa. The results show that HCM’s online tourism image comprises four dimensions: perceptions of history, culture, and heritage value; perceptions of spatial landmarks and urban landscapes; modes of travel behavior and embodied experience; and emotional evaluation and tourism experience quality. The TF-IDF results indicate that terms such as architecture, history, Portuguese, church, Ruins of St. Paul’s, and Senado Square constitute the core elements of tourists’ cognitive image. BERTopic further identified 18 valid topics and revealed three interrelated semantic clusters: heritage-space cognition, landmark and district experiences, and integrated tourism experiences. The RoBERTa-based sentiment analysis shows that tourists’ overall evaluations are dominated by positive emotions, while crowding, high visitor density, and gaps between expectations and actual experiences remain important sources of negative evaluations. This study demonstrates the applicability of the proposed framework in the Historic Centre of Macao and provides a methodological reference for tourism image research in other cultural heritage destinations. Meeting European carbon neutrality and energy performance targets requires large-scale rehabilitation of historic and traditional buildings, one of the construction sector’s key challenges by 2050. This will significantly increase demand for new materials and the production of waste, which already accounts for 39% of waste in Wallonia. From a circular economy and urban mining perspective, however, this waste can be viewed as a valuable resource for reuse and recovery. Despite this potential, Wallonia lacks detailed information on the material composition of its historic building stock, including material types, quantities, and reuse potential. Such knowledge is crucial for designing effective renovation strategies and promoting circular construction practices. The URMIBALI project addresses this gap by investigating traditional residential buildings built before 1919 in Liège (Belgium). Based on six case studies, the project develops two complementary research parts. The first part focuses on inventorying existing material stocks, estimating waste flows resulting from energy renovations, and evaluating the reuse potential of the main waste fractions. The second part proposes an initial digital methodology for the rapid and efficient acquisition of façade material data. The project’s novelty lies in its multi-material, bottom-up, and transdisciplinary approach, as well as in the creation of previously unavailable data on building-stock composition and the development of simple and flexible digital methods to acquire those data. These outputs improve knowledge of traditional buildings, support projections of renovation waste up to 2050, and facilitate urban-scale management of material flows, including transport, supply chains, and environmental impacts. This contribution presents the research methodology, key findings, and the transferability of the digital method to other building typologies and European contexts. Full article

Social media platforms and user-generated content (UGC) have become central to how travelers discover and evaluate cultural destinations, yet lesser-known second-tier heritage sites remain substantially underrepresented in digital tourism research. This study investigates how Chinese tourists perceive and engage with the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Lamphun, Thailand, through UGC collected from three major Chinese social media platforms (WeChat, Douyin, and Rednote) spanning the period from 2019 to 2023. A total of 642 relevant posts were analyzed using a mixed-methods analytical framework comprising SnowNLP-based Chinese-language sentiment analysis, rule-based tourism intention classification, and TF-IDF-driven K-means thematic clustering. Results indicate an overall predominance of positive sentiment, with sentiment score emerging as the strongest predictor of tourism intention. Thematic clustering revealed three distinct experiential dimensions, with culinary heritage and contemporary local lifestyle and cafe exploration generating the highest sentiment distribution and within-cluster tourism intention rate. These findings demonstrate the analytical value of integrated UGC data mining for underrepresented ICH destinations and offer empirical insights to support data-driven destination marketing strategies and destination management organization (DMO) decision-making for the promotion of secondary cultural heritage destinations. Sustainable land-use regulation in historical and cultural cities requires balancing heritage conservation, development demand, cropland retention, and urban–rural spatial restructuring. However, the stage-wise reorganization of urban–rural construction land under these coupled pressures remains insufficiently understood. Taking Jingzhou District, China, as a case study, this study uses land-use data from 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020 and integrates stage-wise random-forest analysis, consistency-based interaction-network mining, and multi-scenario simulation within the intPLUS framework. Population, GDP, and areal-water distance layers were matched to the corresponding stage-terminal snapshots where applicable, whereas 2020 POI data were used as contemporary spatial-context proxies. From 2000 to 2020, urban industrial land (UIL) expanded from 16.63 to 46.42 km2, increasing by approximately 179.1%, whereas rural settlements (RS) increased more moderately from 56.59 to 60.27 km2, increasing by approximately 6.5%. The stage-wise RF and interaction-network results show that UIL and RS followed different spatial association structures, with stronger UIL self-reinforcement and stronger RS self-continuity in the later stage. Historical validation showed overall accuracy values of approximately 91% and Kappa values around 0.80, but FoM values remained relatively low, ranging from 0.098 to 0.176. Class-specific mapping accuracy was higher for RS (81.90–82.37%) than for UIL (55.20–66.93%), indicating a weaker performance in locating UIL change. Therefore, the 2035 simulations should be interpreted as parameter-conditioned regulatory comparisons rather than deterministic pixel-level forecasts. The scenario results indicate that the conservation-oriented limited growth was associated with the restricted UIL expansion and better cropland retention under the prescribed demand and constraint settings, while the RS reduction occurred only under explicit village-consolidation and construction-land quota reallocation assumptions. By distinguishing UIL and RS, this study provides differentiated regulation-oriented evidence for sustainable land-use governance in historical and cultural cities. Full article

Research on dark tourism and industrial heritage has largely evolved in parallel, despite their shared focus on sites shaped by death, suffering, and socio-environmental transformation. This study aims to map and synthesise the empirical and conceptual literature at this intersection in order to clarify how the darker dimensions of industrial and mining heritage are conceptualised, experienced, and interpreted, and to develop an integrated framework for their analysis. Following the PRISMA 2020 framework, it systematically reviews 33 peer-reviewed studies published between 2009 and the first quarter of 2026. Three main findings emerge. First, sanitisation—the marginalisation of suffering and exploitation in favour of narratives of technological achievement—is a dominant feature of industrial heritage interpretation and research. Second, visitors consistently experience emotional responses to dark heritage, with distinct affective profiles linked to environmental damage, human suffering, and labour histories. Third, labour exploitation remains under-theorised despite its centrality, reflecting its structural and long-term character, which challenges event-based dark tourism models. Building on these findings, the study proposes a tripartite typology of industrial darkness and introduces the concept of the evidence landscape to explain how sites communicate difficult pasts beyond formal interpretation. This study examines the persistence, change, and discontinuity of human settlements in the northern Stig Plain along the Danube in Serbia. It examines how natural conditions, together with historical events and the strategic imperatives of specific periods, have shaped the establishment, development, decline, and abandonment of settlements in this landscape, as well as their change and transformation. Particular attention is given to the Roman city of Viminacium, now largely buried beneath fertile farmland and affected by mining activity. The research integrates theoretical perspectives on landscape, human–environment relations, and processes of discontinuity and change with insights into Roman urban planning and overall settlement dynamics, contextualised through the environmental and historical development of the landscape. It considers why Viminacium remained the only major urban centre in the plain and why no later settlement developed directly above it, reexamining whether this absence can be understood as a form of landscape discontinuity. The findings emphasise the strong influence of natural factors, while suggesting that the urban potential of the fertile Stig Plain could only be fully realised in the Roman period, through the establishment of a legionary fortress supported by advanced technology and organised labour, and guided by strategic objectives. From a heritage perspective, the study also examines the definition of landscape boundaries, highlighting Viminacium’s legacy as an integrative element that brings together remains from multiple periods into a unique and evolving cultural landscape worthy of preservation, though one that faces ongoing challenges in sustainable management. Annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts enable the extraction of core information, facilitating structured annotation and standardised indexing. These processes provide essential support for knowledge retrieval, digital utilisation, and in-depth analysis of these texts. Recent advances in digital technologies have opened new possibilities for annotation and indexing, offering transformative approaches to address challenges arising from the abstract, concise, and complex nature of classical Chinese medical literature. However, existing research has largely overlooked the intrinsic interconnection and synergistic mechanisms between annotation and indexing within the workflow. This study examines annotation and indexing as an integrated whole, reviewing the current state of research, identifying existing challenges, and proposing future directions. The findings reveal that major challenges in the annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts centre on four key areas: cultural connotation, rule formulation, result dissemination, and technical algorithms. Addressing these issues requires a systematic approach, including the development of a cultural heritage framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the establishment of standardised annotation and indexing principles, the construction of high-quality corpora, the optimisation of data circulation mechanisms, and the refinement of intelligent algorithms. Advancing the annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts not only promotes their efficient circulation and secondary utilisation but also lays a solid foundation for the large-scale mining of Traditional Chinese Medicine knowledge, its modern transmission, and cross-disciplinary intelligent applications, thereby driving the innovative development of the field. Addressing these gaps, this study adopts a tourist-perception perspective to examine seven types of literary heritage tourism space forms in Shanghai. Using online review data, TF–IDF and TextRank methods are applied to identify key space elements and their semantic relationships, enabling a data-driven analysis of spatial characteristics. The results identify three key dimensions, namely perceptual, conceptual, and experiential, which are further organised into 15 subcategories. A spatial analytical framework is developed to conceptualise the literary heritage tourism space as a process shaped by physical settings, symbolic interpretations, and experiential co-production. Furthermore, the findings suggest an interpretive framework of spatial reconstruction, in which tourist participation serves as a link between internal space elements and broader socio-cultural contexts. This study extends the application of spatial production theory from a perception-based perspective, combines computational text analysis with spatial interpretation, and offers practical implications for sustainable cultural landscape planning. As unique settlements born of industrial civilization, workers’ residential areas carry rich heritage and the collective memory of communities they contain, endowing them with distinct historical and cultural significance. Assessing and enhancing their resilience are essential for both heritage preservation and sustainable community development. Despite the prevalence of such neighborhoods in China’s old industrial cities, systematic evaluation of their comprehensive resilience remains limited. To address this research gap, we take Taiyuan Mining Machinery Dormitory as a case study. Integrating multi-source spatial and demographic data, we construct a resilience evaluation framework based on the DPSIR model, comprising five criterion layers, 22 element layers, and 49 indicators. Combined with an obstacle degree model, it identifies key factors constraining resilience. Results indicate that comprehensive resilience of the study area is at a “moderate” level, with the “response” subsystem scoring notably low, reflecting insufficient stakeholder attention. Major obstacles include per capita shelter area, building quality, road accessibility, residents’ willingness to participate in governance, and organizational leadership capacity. Based on these findings, targeted strategies are proposed to enhance resilience amid increasing risks. This study contributes to community resilience theory and offers practical insights for the conservation and regeneration of workers’ residential areas under urban renewal. Full article

The conservation of tuff- and coral rock-built architectural heritage structures (AHS) is challenging because access to original tuff and coral rock has become difficult and severely limited due to urbanization, land reclamation, the depletion of stone quarries, anti-mining and anti-quarrying legislation. An emerging approach to address this issue is to create compatible “replacement” rocks via geopolymerization, a process that is more sustainable and greener than the use of conventional cement and concrete. To explore the potential of geopolymers for AHS conservation strategies, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were implemented; 103 eligible articles were identified and classified into geopolymers for AHS (34 articles), tuff-built AHS (60 articles), and coral rock-built AHS (9 articles). Tuff substrates in AHSs appear in a variety of colors (yellowish-brown, grayish-cream, reddish-brown, pale greenish-gray and pink hues), densities (1.0–2.5 g/m3), and compressive strengths (3–100 MPa). Meanwhile, coral rock substrates in AHSs appear in whitish-cream color and are coarse-pored (1–5 MPa), fine-grained (8–15 MPa), and calcarenite (50–60 MPa). In terms of geopolymer formulation, metakaolin was reported as the most popular main precursor or admixture, while NaOH and Na2SiO3 were used simultaneously as alkaline activators. Aggregates used in geopolymer formulations depended on local availability, including quartz sand, river sand, crushed stones, carbonate stones, volcanic rock, volcanic sand, tuff, brick, ceramic tiles, and waste materials. Aesthetics, chemical composition, physical attributes, and mechanical properties have been identified as key criteria to ensure geopolymer compatibility for AHS conservation application. To date, geopolymers have been applied for AHS conservation as repair mortars, consolidants (i.e., grout and adhesives), and masonry strengthening (i.e., fiber-reinforced mortar). Finally, geopolymers formulated for AHS conservation have similar durability as the original substrate based on accelerated aging tests (i.e., salt mist, wet-dry, and freeze–thaw) and long-term outdoor exposure experiments.
