Purpose: Revision total hip arthroplasty (RTHA) in the presence of a well-fixed femoral stem is associated with increased risk, as stem removal often results in bone loss, prolonged operative time, and greater blood loss. This problem is particularly relevant for older implants with a 14/16 taper, which is incompatible with most modern femoral heads. The Bioball™ System, a modular head–neck adapter, allows for acetabular or head-only revision while preserving the femoral stem. This study aimed to evaluate long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of RTHA using the Bioball™ System in patients with 14/16 tapers. Methods: A total of 38 patients (23 women, 15 men; mean age 73.5 years) met the inclusion criteria. All procedures were carried out with a well-fixed femoral stem and a 14/16 taper. Revisions were limited to exchange of the acetabular component, liner, or both, avoiding stem removal. The primary indication was acetabular cup loosening (n = 29, 76.3%); liner-only exchange was performed in 9 patients (23.7%). Clinical outcomes were assessed using the modified Merle d’Aubigné and Postel (MAP) score, and radiological evaluation focused on fixation, migration, and loosening. Mean follow-up was 8.44 years. Results: Both the acetabular component and liner were replaced in 76.3% of patients, while 23.7% underwent liner and head exchange only. Longer adapter sizes were most frequently used, and a 7.5° offset adapter was applied in 57.9% of cases. The modified MAP score improved by a mean of 5.7 points (p < 0.05), and VAS pain scores decreased from 7.4 to 2.6 (p < 0.05). No radiological signs of loosening were observed at final follow-up. Conclusions: The Bioball™ System enables effective restoration of hip stability and offset without femoral stem removal, offering favorable long-term clinical and radiological outcomes in revisions involving older 14/16 tapers. Cervical cancer (CC) remains a common malignant tumor that seriously threatens women’s health globally. Gramine (GR), a natural alkaloid derived from plants such as Arundo donax L., exhibits anti-tumor activities, yet its mechanistic actions in CC are still unclear. Here, we integrated cell-based assays, network pharmacology, and multi-omics analysis to systematically investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying GR’s anti-CC effects. In vitro experiments showed that GR significantly inhibited proliferation and migration, induced apoptosis, and triggered G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells. Integrated multi-omics analysis identified CDK2 as a critical target of GR, with both mRNA and protein levels markedly reduced following treatment. Mechanistically, GR likely suppresses CC progression by modulating the “CYP4A22-AS1/LINC00958–hsa-miR-133b–CDK2” competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) axis. Immune analysis indicated positive correlations of CDK2, CYP4A22-AS1, and LINC00958 with the immune checkpoint molecule CD47. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that GR inhibits CC through a ncRNA-mediated suppression of CDK2, leading to reduced HeLa cell proliferation and migration and enhanced apoptosis. These results provide a mechanistic rationale for developing GR as a candidate agent for targeted therapy and immuno-combination strategies in CC. Full article

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women, and metastatic breast cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural compound found in various plants and is known to exhibit various anti-cancer effects. The present study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of RSV in inhibiting breast cancer metastasis in a murine model of 4T1 breast tumor that shares close molecular features with human triple negative breast cancer. Methods: Murine breast cancer 4T1 cells were used to examine the effects of RSV on breast cancer metastasis and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). In vitro cell proliferation and Transwell migration assays and in vivo 4T1 tumor transplantation models were established in female Balb/c mice to determine the anti-metastatic effects of RSV and its mechanism of action. Results: RSV significantly inhibited 4T1 tumor cell migration and significantly decreased expression levels of EMT markers Snail and Vimentin, as well as the nuclear translocation of β-catenin both in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of β-catenin similarly reduced the expression levels of EMT markers. RSV significantly decreased the number of lung metastases in 4T1-implanted mice by inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway activation. RSV (150 mg/kg/day) reduced the number of visible tumor metastatic nodules and the histological count of metastatic lung carcinomas by 51.82% and 62.58%, respectively, compared to vehicle administration. Conclusions: Our study provides important new mechanistic insight into the strong anti-cancer effects of RSV in inhibiting 4T1 breast cancer metastasis by preventing Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway-mediated epithelial–mesenchymal transition. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of RSV as a promising drug in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Full article

This essay examines how contemporary Anglophone Chinese women writers rewrite the imagery of Chinese snake women through speculative retellings that foreground sisterhood, queer desire, and diasporic identity. Drawing on queer diaspora studies and feminist criticism, I argue that Larissa Lai’s Salt Fish Girl (2002) and Amanda Lee Koe’s Sister Snake (2024) revise the figure of the Chinese snake woman to imagine forms of female intimacy and kinship that transcend heteronormative and patriarchal frameworks. In these works, sisterhood operates both as a familial bond and as an intimate, queer relation charged with affective, physical, and occasionally erotic intensity. The original White Snake legend—one of China’s Four Great Folktales—has long invited queer readings, especially through the complex relationship between White Snake and her companion Green Snake. In dialogue with the Chinese snake myth, Lai and Koe relocate the snake woman into speculative worlds shaped by queer desire, racial marginalization, and transnational migration. In Salt Fish Girl, Lai reimagines the reincarnations of the half-snake Chinese mother goddess Nu Wa across colonial South China and near-future bio-capitalist Canada, portraying a cross-temporal lesbian love between the protagonist and the titular Salt Fish Girl. In Sister Snake, Koe’s protagonists—serpent sisters Su and Emerald, separated between Singapore and New York—disrupt normative family scripts while forging a fragmented but enduring affective bond. Through the motif of the Chinese snake woman, these works construct imaginative spaces in which intimate sisterhood subverts patriarchal and national containment, advancing a queer vision of female togetherness. This article examines the maternal healthcare experiences of ten Brazilian women during Portugal’s obstetric crisis, focusing on access, use, and quality of care throughout the perinatal and childbirth periods. Using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews, this study explores women’s perceptions of the adequacy and quality of maternal healthcare, contributing to a deeper understanding of their experiences within the Portuguese health system. Thematic analysis revealed persistent barriers to accessing services, linked to limited knowledge of the healthcare system, lack of awareness of legal rights, discrimination, and other structural obstacles. Participants expressed dissatisfaction with the clarity and quality of information provided by healthcare professionals, their communication skills, and the limited access to specialized care. They also described feeling undervalued by healthcare providers and reported an absence of emotional and psychosocial support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Accounts of disrespectful and abusive practices highlight the vulnerability of migrant women. This study underscores the urgent need to recognize and address migrant women’s needs. Beyond access, policies should promote equity, cultural responsiveness, and intercultural dialogue to ensure respectful, person-centered maternal care. Full article

Women in vulnerable living situations with schizophrenia face intersecting challenges, including migration-related trauma, caregiving burdens, and systemic barriers such as cultural dislocation, limited healthcare access, and stigma. These factors heighten vulnerability compared with men and contribute to delayed diagnoses, poor treatment adherence, and adverse outcomes. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools offer potential support, though they should be regarded as complementary rather than stand-alone solutions. This review synthesizes literature on gender-specific care for women with schizophrenia, examining clinical, social, and reproductive needs alongside the impact of migration and psychosocial adversity. Emerging models, including women-focused psychiatric units, perinatal services, and community therapeutic spaces, illustrate holistic approaches that integrate the medical, psychological, and social dimensions of care. Digital interventions, such as smartphone applications, mobile health tools, and digital participation strategies, are considered supportive extensions that offer opportunities to improve access, reduce costs, and enhance continuity of care. Despite this promise, digital tools remain under-validated for women in precarious contexts. Ethical challenges, including algorithmic bias, data privacy risks, and the exclusion of undocumented or marginalized groups, further constrain equitable implementation. This review aims to articulate conceptual linkages among gender, migration, and digital innovation in schizophrenia care, identifying thematic patterns, ethical tensions, and structural limitations in the existing literature. The synthesis provides a foundation for future hypothesis development and interdisciplinary research to advance inclusive and equity-driven mental health interventions. Full article

Background and Objectives: Organ dysfunctions affect the quality of bone and body fluids. This case report seeks links between the underlying conditions of three patients undergoing hip arthroplasty (HA) with uncemented implants, the quality of their bones, and their Ti-6Al-4V orthopaedic implants, on different time spans. Femoral stems are investigated. A brief review supports our findings. Materials and Methods: Cases: two women (F1 35+, F2 80+), and one man (M 65+), all having diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and kidney dysfunction. Samples: a segment of a broken 7-year-old stem, bone with a metallic layer, soft tissue, segments of one spare stem, and synthetic plasma enriched with glucose and urea according to the biochemistry tests of the respective patients. Vast studies show that cholesterol influences bone quality only. The stem pieces were ultrasonicated for 7 h at 37 °C in synthetic plasma. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and profilometry investigated the Ti-alloy samples, electrochemistry analysed the post-sonication plasma, and histopathology examination was performed on the soft tissue remnants on the broken stem. Results: EDX show that all stem samples are Ti-6Al-4V with minute additions of other elements and hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating. SEM and profilometry analysis are consistent for the roughness in the outer layers of the stems. Electrochemistry on the bone fragment shows migration of vanadium during the 6 months since fracture to revision for M. Conclusions: Stems in altered synthetic plasma are affected by glucose and urea. Metal migration from the prostheses can occur through the chemical interactions between body fluids with abnormal biochemistry and the orthopaedic prostheses, favoured by cracks and concurring with wear following friction during usual movements. Cholesterol influences on the bone quality. Full article

China’s rapid urbanization has created the world’s largest internal migration, increasingly shaped by women’s participation. Co-migrant mothers—rural women who bring their children to cities—occupy complex roles as workers, wives, and caregivers. Existing studies focus on left-behind mothers or individual coping, but little is known about how co-migrant mothers collectively reshape motherhood through urban spatial and social change. Based on fieldwork in a Guangzhou migrant community, this study develops the “disembedding–re-embedding–reconstruction” framework to show how mobility reconfigures motherhood. Moving from villages to cities disembeds mothers from the moral surveillance that enforces self-sacrificing norms. Community-based organizations (CBOs) then serve as re-embedding sites where women form new maternal subjectivities through mutual support and reflection, producing a locally rooted idea of self-caring motherhood. This idea reframes care as reciprocal rather than self-depleting and affirms mothers’ emotional and bodily well-being as part of family life. Finally, these values are reconstructed in households through subtle temporal and spatial negotiations that adjust gendered divisions of labor without open conflict. Highlighting collective empowerment and spatial transformation, this study moves motherhood research beyond individualized lenses and reveals grounded, pragmatic forms of gendered agency in China’s rural–urban migration. White-matter development during fetal life represents one of the most vulnerable processes to environmental disruption, as it relies on the precisely timed proliferation, migration, and differentiation of oligodendrocyte lineage cells. Among environmental threats, exposure to toxic compounds contained in tobacco smoke and vaping aerosols represents a major yet preventable risk during pregnancy. Despite growing awareness, tobacco smoking remains widespread, and a substantial proportion of the population—including pregnant women—continues to perceive electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) as less harmful, a misconception that contributes to persistent prenatal exposure. These products expose the fetus to numerous substances that readily cross the placenta and reach the developing brain, including compounds with endocrine-disrupting activity, where they interfere with white-matter development. Epidemiological and neuroimaging studies consistently reveal microstructural alterations in white matter that correlate with long-term cognitive and behavioral impairments in offspring exposed in utero. These alterations may arise from both nicotine-specific pathways and the actions of other toxicants in cigarette smoke and ENDS aerosols that cross the placenta and disrupt white-matter emergence and maturation. Preclinical research provides mechanistic insight: nicotine acts directly on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in oligodendrocyte precursor cells, disrupting calcium signaling and differentiation, while additional constituents of smoke and vaping aerosols also affect astrocyte and microglial function and disturb the extracellular milieu required for proper myelination. Bangladesh is at the forefront of climate change impacts because of its geographical location, high population density, and constrained socio-economic infrastructure. Our objective is to explore the impacts of climate change on human security components and conflict constellation, and identify adaptation actors through the lens of experts in Bangladesh. We conducted 12 semi-structured qualitative interviews with lead experts using the Problem-centred Interview (PCI) methodology and inductively applied content analysis to analyse the data, complemented with descriptive statistics. Experts see a shift in baseline risk due to the increase in frequency and severity of natural hazards. It exacerbates existing vulnerabilities by declining agricultural productivity, undermining water security and increasing migration. Food, economic, and water security are predominantly impacted, where women and the poor suffer disproportionately. Impacts on urban areas, energy and community security are under-researched. Experts agreed that climate change is a “threat multiplier” and could aggravate political insecurity, leading to conflicts. Individuals and households are primary adaptation actors, followed by governmental and non-governmental organisations. This research contributes to the broader understanding of the complex nexus of climate change impacts, human security, and conflict constellation, complements climate models and provides policy-relevant insights for inclusive, long-term adaptation grounded in local realities in Bangladesh. The present study explores the role of food as a symbolic, material, and relational device in identity construction and community processes. This study draws on a qualitative case study of a community-based social restaurant located in a mid-sized city in central-northern Italy. The initiative’s objective is to promote the social and labor inclusion of migrant women through training and experiential programs. The research, conducted over a period of nine months from October 2024 to June 2025, was based on a participatory qualitative design, which integrated semi-structured interviews, ecological maps, photointervention, world café, and affective cartography, involving 35 participants including operators, trainees, local community members, and politicians. The results demonstrate the multifaceted role of food practices at the restaurant, which serve to strengthen internal relationships, regulate community life, construct intercultural narratives, and establish spaces of recognition and agency for the women involved. Moreover, the restaurant has been shown to have the capacity to influence the broader social representations of migration in the urban context, thereby promoting processes of cohesion and belonging. It is evident that food-related activities manifest as quotidian micro-political practices, which have the capacity to subvert stereotypes, recognize frequently unseen abilities, and generate new forms of inclusive citizenship. The present study underscores the transformative capacity of initiatives that employ food practices as innovative instruments for fostering empowerment; well-being; and social participation; through the third element of food. The limitations and future prospects of the present situation are discussed; with particular reference to the need to ensure continuity and institutional sustainability for similar experiences. We aimed to investigate blood concentrations of CXCL9/MIG, CXCL10/IP-10, and CXCL16 chemokines and their diagnostic and prognostic significance in patients with ALD. In a prospective observational study, 88 individuals were recruited, including 63 patients with ALD (44 men and 19 women, aged 48.49 ± 10.88) and 25 healthy control volunteers matched for age, sex, and ethnicity. In blood samples, concentrations of CXCL9/MIG, CXCL10/IP-10, and CXCL16 were measured using immunoenzymatic ELISAs. Correlations were examined between CXCL levels and (a) traditional inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio-NLR) and (b) liver dysfunction severity scores: Child–Turcotte–Pugh (CTP), MELD-NA, MELD 3.0, and modified Maddrey’s discriminant function (mDF). Patients’ survival within 30 days of hospital admission was recorded for analysis. CXCL capabilities in predicting the severity of liver dysfunction and ALD outcome were validated. ALD patients showed significant systemic upregulation of all studied chemokines compared to the control group. Patients with advanced liver disease, classified as MELD-Na ≥ 20, MELD3.0 > 19, and CTP class C, as well as poor short-term outcomes, presented with significantly higher CXCL9 and CXCL10 levels compared to their counterparts. ALD non-survivors had significantly higher concentrations of all studied CXCLs in comparison to controls. Positive correlations between CXCL16 and CRP, leukocytosis, neutrophils, and NLR were confirmed (0.67; 0.46; 0.48; 0.54, respectively). Although none of the chemokines correlated with ALT activity, CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL16 showed positive correlations with bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase and inverse correlations with albumin levels. Our findings revealed the diagnostic and prognostic value of the studied CXCLs in ALD. In particular, CXCL9 and CXCL10 may have potential for discrimination of severe liver dysfunction and poor short-term prognosis. Further multicenter studies are required to confirm our results. The migration of Ethiopian women to the Middle East has primarily been studied in connection with domestic labour and the related vulnerabilities. Due to assumptions about the low educational levels of women entering this sector, as well as the precarity and temporality the sector entails, opportunities for social mobility have been largely overlooked. This article examines changes in Ethiopian women’s labour market participation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It demonstrates that, over time, women who enter the workforce as maids may transition into better-paid work or establish their own business ventures. It further depicts an evolving pattern of well-educated Ethiopian women entering the skilled labour market. Based on ethnographic findings from the UAE, the article offers a critical re-engagement with prevailing narratives of victimhood and severely restricted social mobility opportunities. Drawing on recent conceptualisations of mobilities, trajectories, and temporalities, the article critiques the tendency to portray Ethiopian female migrants as a homogeneous group with similar paths, thereby concealing the diversity of their experiences. Second, it questions the essentialization of women migrant workers as passive victims. By highlighting developments in women’s aspirations and agency over time, the article contributes new knowledge on the potential for social mobility within transnational labour markets. Full article

Endometriosis, a disease affecting about one out of ten women, is characterized by the growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. There is significant disease heterogeneity, but the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying differences in clinical presentation are poorly understood. Here, we investigated endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) from different types of endometrial lesions (endometrioma, superficial, and deep endometrial lesions), which revealed distinct differences in proliferation, migration, and contractility among different lesion types and when compared to ESC from normal (eutopic) endometrium. In particular, ESCs from endometriotic lesions showed reduced proliferation but increased migratory capacity, an effect most pronounced in endometrioma ESCs but also evident in ESCs from superficial and deep lesions. ESCs from superficial and deep lesions—but not those from endometrioma—showed increased contractility, a feature involved in tissue scarring and pain perception. Transcriptomics and proteomics revealed changes in genes and proteins involved in cell division, proliferation, extracellular matrix organization, and migration in endometriosis vs. healthy ESCs. Overall, our results demonstrate that stromal cells from different endometriotic lesions show distinct in vitro phenotypes that might explain differences in clinical presentation. Further, these cells represent an excellent in vitro model for studying patho-mechanisms involved in endometriosis heterogeneity. Full article

High Prevalence of Food Insecurity and Associated Risk Factors in Chilean and Immigrant Women from South-Central Chile

Food insecurity (FI) is a major public health problem that disproportionately affects women, especially if they are migrants. In Chile, there is limited data on how gender and migration status intersect to explain vulnerability to FI. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 2124 women of childbearing age (1062 Chilean and 1062 immigrants) residing in south-central Chile. Biosociodemographic variables were collected through a structured questionnaire, and FI was assessed using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to estimate risk factors using odds ratios (OR). Overall, 39.2% of women experienced some degree of FI, with prevalence significantly higher among immigrants (49%) compared to Chileans (29%). Severe FI was twice as frequent in immigrant women (18.1% vs. 9.2%). The risk factor of FI in the total sample included immigrant status (OR = 2.61; 95% CI: 2.15–3.17), low socioeconomic status (OR = 2.25; 1.77–2.87), having children (OR = 1.82; 1.49–2.23), being head of household (OR = 1.53; 1.25–1.87), not having a job (OR = 1.27; 1.02–1.58), and suffering from depression (OR = 2.11; 1.66–2.67). Subgroup analyses confirmed similar determinants in both groups, with not having a job being relevant mainly for immigrants and age acting as a protective factor among Chileans. FI is highly prevalent among women in south-central Chile, particularly among immigrants. Structural determinants such as socioeconomic status, having children, being the head of the household, and depression increase vulnerability. Policies must integrate gender and migration perspectives, promoting access to adequate food, employment, childcare, and mental health support. Full article
