The sugarcane industry plays a crucial economic role worldwide, with sucrose and ethanol as its main products. However, its processing generates large volumes of by-products—such as bagasse, molasses, vinasse, and straw—that contain valuable components for biotechnological valorization. This review integrates approximately 100 original research articles published in JCR-indexed journals between 2015 and 2025, of which over 50% focus specifically on sugarcane-derived agroindustrial residues. The biotechnological approaches discussed include submerged fermentation, solid-state fermentation, enzymatic biocatalysis, and anaerobic digestion, highlighting their potential for the production of biofuels, enzymes, and high-value bioproducts. In addition to identifying current advances, this review addresses key technical challenges such as (i) the need for efficient pretreatment to release fermentable sugars from lignocellulosic biomass; (ii) the compositional variability of by-products like vinasse and molasses; (iii) the generation of metabolic inhibitors—such as furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural—during thermochemical processes; and (iv) the high costs related to inputs like hydrolytic enzymes. Special attention is given to detoxification strategies for inhibitory compounds and to the integration of multifunctional processes to improve overall system efficiency. The final section outlines emerging trends (2024–2025) such as the use of CRISPR-engineered microbial consortia, advanced pretreatments, and immobilization systems to enhance the productivity and sustainability of bioprocesses. In conclusion, the valorization of sugarcane by-products through biotechnology not only contributes to waste reduction but also supports circular economy principles and the development of sustainable production models. The rising demand for sustainable protein is driving interest in insects as a raw material for advanced food ingredients. This review collates and critically analyses over 300 studies on the conversion of crickets, mealworms, black soldier flies, and other farmed species into powders, protein isolates, oils, and chitosan-rich fibers with targeted techno-functional roles. This survey maps how thermal pre-treatments, blanch–dry–mill routes, enzymatic hydrolysis, and isoelectric solubilization–precipitation preserve or enhance the water- and oil-holding capacity, emulsification, foaming, and gelation, while also mitigating off-flavors, allergenicity, and microbial risks. A meta-analysis shows insect flours can absorb up to 3.2 g of water g−1, stabilize oil-in-water emulsions for 14 days at 4 °C, and form gels with 180 kPa strength, outperforming or matching eggs, soy, or whey in specific applications. Case studies demonstrate a successful incorporation at 5–15% into bakery, meat analogs and dairy alternatives without sensory penalties, and chitin-derived chitosan films extend the bread shelf life by three days. Comparative life-cycle data indicate 45–80% lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use than equivalent animal-derived ingredients. Collectively, the evidence positions insect-based ingredients as versatile, safe, and climate-smart tools to enhance food quality and sustainability, while outlining research gaps in allergen mitigation, consumer acceptance, and regulatory harmonization. Blackcurrant is a notable superfruit in Europe, and its vitamin C content surpasses the well-known blueberry superfruit. However, due to its short shelf life during storage, consumption is mainly accounted by frozen berries, extracts, and concentrates. This study applied an intensity of 1.2 W/m2 UVC with different durations, including control (non-treated), UVC irradiation for 0.5 h (0.5 h treatment), UVC irradiation for 1 h (1 h treatment), and UVC pretreatment for 2 h (2 h treatment) to blackcurrant berries before storage. Fundamental physical (firmness and weight loss) and physicochemical characteristics (SSC, pH, and acids), microbial population changes, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and specific phenolic compound changes were evaluated every five days over a twenty-day storage period. The results indicated that the longer the UVC pretreatment, the lower the water weight losses during storage. Meanwhile, the UVC pretreatment significantly affected the blackcurrant soluble solid content, resulting in higher soluble solid contents detected in the blackcurrants with the higher doses of UVC. For the mold population control, UVC effects were highly correlated with the pretreatment duration. However, UVC did not have a significant influence on the berry pH and acid contents, but the storage length slightly increased the pH and decreased the acids. At the same time, UVC pretreatment did not affect the berry firmness, polyphenols, ascorbic acid content, or antioxidant capacities, which were primarily influenced by the storage duration. The monophenolic compounds detected before and after storage indicated that more than one hour of UVC radiation influenced most of the phenolic contents largely before storage. The UVC pretreatment has also influenced some phenolic compounds. After storage, half an hour of UVC pretreatment increased cyanidin levels, and two hours of UVC pretreatment increased catechin and epicatechin levels. However, most of the compounds remained at similar amounts during storage in each treatment. Further research is needed to improve the UVC radiation time length or intensity or explore other technology combinations to optimize UVC pretreatments for blackcurrant storage. Full article

Various pretreatment methods for the valorization of sunflower husks (SHs) for H2 gas generation through fermentation by Escherichia coli were investigated. We analyzed thermal treatment (TT), acid hydrolysis (AH), and alkaline hydrolysis (AlkH) at different substrate concentrations (50 g L−1, 75 g L−1, 100 g L−1, and 150 g L−1) and dilution levels (undiluted, 2× diluted, and 5× diluted). A concentration of 75 g L−1 SH that was acid-hydrolyzed and dissolved twice in the medium yielded optimal microbial growth, reaching 0.3 ± 0.1 g cell dry weight (CDW) L−1 biomass. The highest substrate level enabling effective fermentation was 100 g L−1, producing 0.37 ± 0.13 (g CDW) × L−1 biomass after complete fermentation, while 150 g L−1 exhibited pronounced inhibitory effects. It is worth mentioning that the sole alkaline treatment was not optimal for growth and H2 production. Co-fermentation with glycerol significantly enhanced both biomass formation (up to 0.42 ± 0.15 (g CDW) × L−1)) and H2 production. The highest H2 yield was observed during batch growth at 50 g L−1 SH hydrolysate with 5× dilution, reaching up to 5.7 mmol H2 (g sugar)−1 with glycerol supplementation. This study introduces a dual-waste valorization strategy that combines agricultural and biodiesel industry residues to enhance clean energy generation. The novelty lies in optimizing pretreatment and co-substrate fermentation conditions to maximize both biohydrogen yield and microbial biomass using E. coli, a widely studied and scalable host. Against the backdrop of the green circular economy, the exploration of reliable and sustainable applications of lignocellulosic biomass (LCBM) has emerged as a critical research frontier. The utilization of LCBM as a ruminant roughage source offers a promising strategy to address two pressing issues: the “human-animal competition for food” dilemma and the environmental degradation resulting from improper LCBM disposal. However, the high degree of lignification in LCBM significantly restricts its utilization efficiency in ruminant diets. In recent years, microbial pretreatment has gained considerable attention as a viable approach to reduce lignification prior to LCBM application as ruminant feed. White-rot fungi (WRF) have emerged as particularly noteworthy among various microbial agents due to their environmentally benign characteristics and unique lignin degradation selectivity. WRF demonstrates remarkable efficacy in enzymatically breaking down the rigid lignocellulosic matrix (comprising lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose) within LCBM cell walls, thereby reducing lignin content—a largely indigestible component for ruminants—while simultaneously enhancing the nutritional profile through increased protein availability and improved digestibility. Solid-state fermentation mediated by WRF enhances LCBM utilization rates and optimizes its nutritional value for ruminant consumption, thereby contributing to the advancement of sustainable livestock production, agroforestry systems, and global environmental conservation efforts. This review systematically examines recent technological advancements in WRF-mediated solid-state fermentation of LCBM, evaluates its outcomes of nutritional enhancement and animal utilization efficiency, and critically assesses current limitations and future prospects of this innovative approach within the framework of circular bioeconomy principles. Despite being recognized as toxic in anaerobic systems, sulfide’s potential to enhance hydrogen fermentation via microbial modulation remains underexplored. This study evaluated the combined effects of sulfide concentration (0–800 mg S/L) and heat pretreatment on hydrogen production during dark fermentation (DF). Without pretreatment, hydrogen yield reached 83 ± 2 mL/g COD at 0 mg S/L but declined with increasing sulfide, becoming negligible at 800 mg S/L. In contrast, heat-pretreated inocula showed markedly improved performance: peak cumulative production (4628 ± 17 mL) and yield (231 ± 1 mL/g COD) were attained at 200 mg S/L, while the maximum production rate (1462 ± 64 mL/h) occurred at 400 mg S/L. These enhancements coincided with elevated acetic and butyric acids, indicating a metabolic shift toward hydrogen-producing pathways. The microbial analysis of heat-pretreated samples revealed an enrichment of Clostridium butyricum (from 73.1% to 87.5%) and Clostridium perfringens, which peaked at 13.5% at 400 mg S/L. This species contributed to butyric acid synthesis. At 800 mg S/L, Clostridium perfringens declined sharply to 0.6%, while non-hydrogenogenic Levilinea saccharolytica proliferated, correlating with reduced butyric acid and hydrogen output. These findings indicate that sulfide supplementation, when combined with heat pretreatment, selectively restructures microbial communities and metabolic pathways, enhancing DF performance. Anaerobic digestion is a widely adopted technique for biologically converting organic biomass to biogas under oxygen-limited conditions. However, several factors, including the properties of biomass and its complex structure, make it challenging to degrade biomass effectively, thereby reducing the overall efficiency of anaerobic digestion. This review examines the recent advancements in commonly used pretreatment techniques, including physical, chemical, and biological methods, and their impact on the biodegradability of organic waste for anaerobic digestion. Furthermore, this review explores integrated approaches that utilize two or more pretreatments to achieve synergistic effects on biomass degradation. This article highlights various additives and their physicochemical characteristics, which play a vital role in stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer to enhance biomethanation reaction rates. Direct electron interspecies transfer is a crucial aspect that accelerates electron transfer among syntrophic microbial communities during anaerobic digestion, thereby enhancing biomethane formation. Finally, this article reviews potential approaches, identifies research gaps, and outlines future directions to strengthen and develop advanced pretreatment strategies and novel additives to improve anaerobic digestion processes for generating high-value biogas. The development of efficient and sustainable water recycling systems is essential for long-term human missions and the establishment of space habitats on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Humidity condensate (HC) is a low-strength wastewater that is currently recycled on the International Space Station (ISS). The main contaminants in HC are primarily low-molecular-weight organics and ammonia. This has caused operational issues due to microbial growth in the Water Process Assembly (WPA) storage tank as well as failure of downstream systems. In addition, treatment of this wastewater primarily uses adsorptive and exchange media, which must be continually resupplied and represent a significant life-cycle cost. This study demonstrates the integration of a membrane-aerated biological reactor (MABR) for pretreatment and storage of HC, followed by brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO). Two system configurations were tested: (1) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% water recovery with the RO concentrate sent to a separate waste tank; and (2) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% recovery with the RO concentrate returned to the MABR (accumulating salinity in the MABR). With an external recycle tank (configuration 2), the system produced 2160 L (i.e., 1080 crew-days) of near potable water (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) < 10 mg/L, total nitrogen (TN) < 12 mg/L, total dissolved solids (TDS) < 30 mg/L) with a single membrane (weight of 260 g). When the MABR was used as the RO recycle tank (configuration 1), 1100 L of permeate could be produced on a single membrane; RO permeate quality was slightly better but generally similar to the first configuration even though no brine was wasted during the run. The results suggest that this hybrid system has the potential to significantly enhance the self-sufficiency of space habitats, supporting sustainable extraterrestrial human habitation, as well as reducing current operational problems on the ISS. These systems may also apply to extreme locations such as remote/isolated terrestrial locations, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Full article

Sugar production generates wastewater rich in dissolved solids and organic matter, and improper disposal poses severe environmental risks, exacerbates water scarcity, and creates regulatory challenges. Conventional treatment methods, such as evaporation and chemical precipitation, are energy-intensive and often ineffective at removing fine particulates and dissolved impurities. This study evaluates membrane-based separation as a sustainable alternative for water reclamation and sugar recovery from sugar industry effluents, focusing on replacing evaporation with membrane processes, ensuring high permeate quality, and mitigating membrane fouling. Cross-flow filtration experiments were conducted on a lab-scale membrane system at 70 °C to suppress microbial growth, comparing direct reverse osmosis (RO) of the raw effluent to an integrated ultrafiltration (UF)–RO process. Direct RO resulted in rapid membrane fouling. A tight UF (5 kDa) pre-treatment before RO significantly mitigated fouling and improved performance, enabling 28% water recovery and 79% sugar recovery, maintaining permeate conductivity below 0.5 mS/cm, sustaining stable flux, and reducing membrane blocking. Additionally, the UF and RO membranes were tested via SEM, EDS, and FTIR to elucidate the fouling mechanisms. Full article

Adequate treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in co-digestion with sewage sludge (SS) through dark fermentation (DF) technologies has been widely studied and recognized. However, there is little experience with a high-solids approach, where practical and scalable conditions are established to lay the groundwork for further development of feasible industrial-scale projects. In this study, the biochemical hydrogen potential of OFMSW using a 7 L batch reactor at mesophilic conditions was evaluated. Parameters such as pH, redox potential, temperature, alkalinity, total solids, and substrate/inoculum ratio were adjusted and monitored. Biogas composition was analyzed by gas chromatography. The microbial characterization of SS and post-reaction percolate liquids was determined through metagenomics analyses. Results show a biohydrogen yield of 38.4 NmLH2/gVS OFMSW, which forms ~60% of the produced biogas. Aeration was proven to be an efficient inoculum pretreatment method, mainly to decrease the levels of methanogenic archaea and metabolic competition, and at the same time maintain the required total solid (TS) contents for high-solids conditions. The microbial community analysis reveals that biohydrogen production was carried out by specific anaerobic and aerobic bacteria, predominantly dominated by the phylum Firmicutes, including the genus Bacillus (44.63% of the total microbial community), Clostridium, Romboutsia, and the phylum Proteobacteria, with the genus Proteus. Reprocessing lignocellulosic waste to obtain new products for industrial purposes is a vital part of circular economy. This paper reports the cellulase production by newly isolated Bacillus methylotrophicus cultured on lignocellulosic agro-industrial by-products, out of which brewer’s spent grain (BSG) was selected as most beneficial. Plackett–Burman design was used for screening medium components, while Box–Behnken design was further applied to model the impact of the three most influential variables. The maximum approximated cellulase activity was 0.469 U/mL (1 U = 1 µmol of reducing sugars/1 min), at 48.6 g/L substrate, 5.3 g/L ammonium sulfate, pH 6.1. The partially purified cellulase was characterized, which demonstrated broad range of optimal pH (6.5–9.4), temperature (50–60 °C), and sensitivity to metals. Changes in lignin and pentosans content was demonstrated as a result of BSG hydrolysis with a cell-free cellulase preparation. The produced enzyme was used for hydrolysis of various chemically pretreated (NaOH and H2SO4) cellulosic substrates, where for reused alkali-pretreated BSG (after microbial enzyme production) the saccharification efficiency was at a level of 25%. The cellulolytic potential of the bacterial strain, along with its resistance to ethanol, present a beneficial combination, potentially applicable to aid saccharification of lignocellulosic by-products for biofuel production. Impact of Chemotherapy Alone and in Combination with Immunotherapy on Oral Microbiota in Cancer Patients—A Pilot Study

The oral cavity harbors a highly intricate and dynamic microbial ecosystem of multiple microhabitats supporting diverse microbial populations. As the second most complex microbiome in the human body, surpassed only by the gut, the oral microbiome comprises over 1000 species. Disruptions in the microbial balance have been associated with an increased risk of both oral diseases (dental caries and periodontitis) and systemic conditions, including inflammatory diseases and certain types of cancers. In our pilot study, we purified bacterial DNA from pre-treated, saponin-based, host-depleted saliva samples and performed 16S amplicon sequencing, using Oxford Nanopore Technologies, to identify bacterial composition and investigate changes in the oral microbiota of patients with solid tumors in response to chemotherapy, either alone or in combination with immunotherapy. We found significant reductions in microbial diversity of the oral microbiota following cancer treatment, which may contribute to post-therapeutic complications such as oral mucositis. Moreover, our findings indicate that on the one hand, following chemotherapy treatment the microbial profile is characterized by an increased abundance of Streptococcus, Gemella, and Granulicatella and a decrease in the abundance of Neisseria and Veillonella. On the other hand, post combined treatment, only Streptococcus relative abundance increased, Veillonella exhibited a slight decline, and Haemophilus and Neisseria displayed a marked decrease, whilst Granulicatella and Gemella remained relatively stable. Our findings underline the impact of cancer therapy on the oral microbiome, highlighting the potential for precision-based strategies to restore microbial balance and minimize treatment-related complications. The effective use of biowaste resources becomes crucial for the development of bioprocessing alternatives to current oil- and chemical-based value chains. Targeting the development of multi-product biorefinery approaches benefits the viability and profitability of these process schemes. Certain oleaginous microorganisms, such as oleaginous red yeast, can co-produce industrially relevant bio-based products. This work aims to explore the use of industrial and urban waste as cost-effective feedstock for producing microbial oil and carotenoids using Rhodosporidium toruloides. The soluble fraction, resulting from homogenization, crushing, and centrifugation of discarded vegetable waste, was used as substrate under a pulse-feeding strategy with a concentrated enzymatic hydrolysate from municipal forestry residue obtained after steam explosion pretreatment (190 °C, 10 min, and 40 mg H2SO4/g residue). Additionally, the initial nutrient content was investigated to enhance process productivity values. The promising results of these cultivation strategies yield a final cell concentration of 36.4–55.5 g/L dry cell weight (DCW), with an intracellular lipid content of up to 42–45% (w/w) and 665–736 µg/g DCW of carotenoids. These results demonstrate the potential for optimizing the use of waste resources to provide effective alternative uses to current biowaste management practices, also contributing to the market of industrially relevant products with lower environmental impacts. After a brief characterisation of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) in terms of its biochemical structure and the pretreatment techniques used to disrupt lignin structure and decrystallise and depolymerise cellulose, this review considers five main pathways for biochemical biomass conversion: starting with anaerobic digestion to convert various LCB feedstocks into bioproducts; considering the integration of biochemical and thermochemical processes, syngas fermentation, which has been recently developed for biofuel and chemical production, is reviewed; the production of 2G bioethanol and biobutanol from LCB waste is discussed; the literature on biohydrogen production by dark fermentation, photofermentation, and bioelectrochemical processes using microbial electrolysis cells as well as hybrid biological processes is reviewed. The conclusions and future prospects of integrating biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes of biomass are discussed and emphasised. Full article

The increasing production of bioplastics worldwide requires sustainable end-of-life solutions to minimize the environmental burden. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been recognized as a potential technology for valorizing waste and producing renewable energy. However, the inherent resistance of certain bioplastics to degradation under anaerobic conditions requires specific strategies for improvement. Thus, in this review, the anaerobic biodegradability of commonly used bioplastics such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polycaprolactone (PCL), and starch- and cellulose-based bioplastics are critically evaluated for various operational parameters, including the temperature, particle size, inoculum-to-substrate ratio (ISR) and polymer type. Special attention is given to process optimization strategies, including pretreatment techniques (mechanical, thermal, hydrothermal, chemical and enzymatic) and co-digestion with nutrient-rich organic substrates, such as food waste and sewage sludge. The combinations of these strategies used for improving hydrolysis kinetics, increasing the methane yield and stabilizing reactor performance are described. In addition, new technologies, such as hydrothermal pretreatment and microbial electrolysis cell-assisted AD, are also considered as prospective strategies for reducing the recalcitrant nature of some bioplastics. While various strategies have enhanced anaerobic degradability, a consistent performance across bioplastic types and operational settings remains a challenge. By integrating key recent findings and limitations alongside pretreatment and co-digestion strategies, this review offers new insights to facilitate the circular use of bioplastics in solid waste management systems.
