Physics concepts are considered an essential component of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and fundamental for economic and technological development in the world. However, there can be student academic underperformance, such as the school environment, learning media and infrastructure, student interest and emotions, as well as social and economic development factors in communities. These problems are even more acute in rural areas of developing countries, where poverty is high and teachers often lack the necessary technological skills. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a low-cost STEM tool focused on motivation in learning, in terms of five variables of interest in physics in rural areas, as well as the durability of the tools used to learn 12 physics concepts. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with the participation of 78 high school students, with an average age of 15.82 years, in a rural area of Guerrero, Mexico. The results showed that using the STEM tool significantly increased students’ interest in learning methodology, active participation, and attitude towards physics, facilitating the teacher’s work. In addition, the 3D construction kit used in the experimentation, besides being low-cost, proved to be affordable and durable, making it ideal for use in rural areas. Full article

The gyroid minimal surface is one type of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS). TPMS is a minimal surface replicated in the three main directions of the Cartesian coordinate system. The minimal surface is a surface stretched between two objects, known as the smallest possible area (e.g., a soap bubble with a saddle shape stretched between two parallel circles). The complicated shape of the TPMS makes its production possible only by additive methods (3D printing). This article presents the results of experimental studies on heat transfer and flow resistance in a heat exchanger made of stainless steel. The heat exchange surface, a TPMS gyroid, separates two working media: hot and cold water. The water flow rate was varied in the range from 8 kg/h to 25 kg/h (Re = 246–1171). The water temperature at the inlet to the exchanger was maintained at a constant level of 8.8 ± 0.3 °C and 49.5 ± 0.5 °C for cold and hot water, respectively. The effect of water flow rate on the change in its temperature, the heat output of the exchanger, the average heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, and overall resistance factor was presented. Social media platforms have emerged as valuable sources for mental health research, enabling the detection of conditions such as depression through analyses of user-generated posts. This manuscript offers practical, step-by-step guidance for applying machine learning and deep learning methods to mental health detection on social media. Key topics include strategies for handling heterogeneous and imbalanced datasets, advanced text preprocessing, robust model evaluation, and the use of appropriate metrics beyond accuracy. Real-world examples illustrate each stage of the process, and an emphasis is placed on transparency, reproducibility, and ethical best practices. While the present work focuses on text-based analysis, we discuss the limitations of this approach—including label inconsistency and a lack of clinical validation—and highlight the need for future research to integrate multimodal signals and gold-standard psychometric assessments. By sharing these frameworks and lessons, this manuscript aims to support the development of more reliable, generalizable, and ethically responsible models for mental health detection and early intervention. The use of informal language on social media and the sheer volume of information make it difficult for a computer system to analyse it automatically. The aim of this work is to design a new group decision-making method that applies two new consensus methods based on sentiment analysis. This method is designed for application in the analysis of texts on social media. To test the method, we will use posts from the so called social network X. The proposed model differs from previous work in this field by defining a new degree of subjectivity and a new degree of reliability associated with user opinions. This work also presents two new consensus measures, one focused on measuring the number of words classified as positive and negative and the other on analysing the percentage of occurrence of those words. Our method allows us to automatically extract preferences from the transcription of the texts used in the debate, avoiding the need for users to explicitly indicate their preferences. The application to a real case of public investment demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach in collaborative contexts that used natural language. Full article

The purpose of this work was to obtain specialized enrichment cultures from an original extreme acidophilic consortium of extremely acidophilic microorganisms and to study their microbial community composition and biotechnological potential. At temperatures of 25, 35, 40 and 50 °C, distinct enrichments of extremely acidophilic microorganisms used in the processes of bioleaching sulfide ores were obtained using nutrient media containing ferrous sulfate, elemental sulfur and a copper sulfide concentrate as nutrient inorganic substrates, with and without the addition of 0.02% yeast extract. The microbial community composition was studied using the sequencing of the V3–V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA genes. The different growth conditions led to changes in the microbial composition and relative abundance of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic, strict autotrophic and mixotrophic microorganisms in members of the genera Acidithiobacillus, Sulfobacillus, Leptospirillum, Acidibacillus, Ferroplasma and Cuniculiplasma. The dynamics of the oxidation of ferrous iron, sulfur, and sulfide minerals (pyrite and chalcopyrite) by the enrichments was also studied in the temperature range of 25 to 50 °C. The study of enrichment cultures using the molecular biological method using the metabarcoding method of variable V3–24 V4 fragments of 16S rRNA genes showed that enrichment cultures obtained under different conditions differed in composition, which can be explained by differences in the physiological properties of the identified microorganisms. Regarding the dynamics of the oxidation of ferrous ions, sulfur, and sulfide minerals (pyrite and chalcopyrite), each enrichment culture was studied at a temperature range of 25 to 50 °C and indicated that all obtained enrichments were capable of oxidizing ferrous iron, sulfur and minerals at different rates. The obtained enrichment cultures may be used in further work to increase bioleaching by using the suitable inoculum for the temperature and process conditions. Full article

Thermal wick-debinding, commonly used in low-pressure injection molding, remains challenging due to complex interactions between binder transport, capillary forces, and thermal effects. This study presents a numerical simulation of binder removal kinetics by coupling Darcy’s law with the Phase Transport in Porous Media interface in COMSOL Multiphysics. The model was validated and subsequently used to study the influence of key debinding parameters. Contrary to the Level Set method, which predicts isolated binder clusters, the Multiphase Flow in Porous Media method proposed in this work more accurately reflects the physical behavior of the process, capturing a continuous binder extraction throughout the green part and a uniform binder distribution within the wicking medium. The model successfully predicted the experimentally observed decrease in binder saturation with increasing debinding temperature or time, with deviation limited 3–10 vol. % (attributed to a mandatory brushing operation, which may underestimate the residual binder mass). The model was then used to optimize the debinding process: for a temperature of 100 °C and an inter-part gap distance of 5 mm, the debinding time was minimized to 7 h. These findings highlight the model’s practical utility for process design, offering a valuable tool for determining optimal debinding parameters and improving productivity. Full article

This work expands the processing window of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing of WE43 magnesium alloy by evaluating laser powers and scanning speeds up to 400 W and 1200 mm/s, and their effect on densification, microstructure, and electrochemical performance. Relative density of 99.9% was achieved for 300 W and 800 mm/s, showing that the use of high laser power is not a limitation for the manufacturing of Mg alloys, as has been usually considered. Microstructural characterisation revealed refined grains and the presence of RE-rich intermetallic particles, while microhardness increased with height due to thermal gradients. Electrochemical testing in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, a more aggressive media than those already used, indicated that the corrosion of samples with density values below 99% is conditioned by the porosity; however, above this value, in the WE43, the corrosion evolution is more related to the microstructure of the samples, according to electrochemical evaluation. This study demonstrates the viability of high-energy LPBF processing for WE43, offering optimised mechanical and corrosion properties for biomedical and structural applications. Full article

I use Shakespeare to teach acting to students. A key to my work is impression management: what Shakespeare called reputation. I view the management of reputation as a route into Shakespearean character, which I present to students as a mask attuned to sacred values. The physical basis from which the actor can discover the mask is what Hamlet calls ‘smoothness’, which I explain with an acting exercise. We discover the force of sacred values by noticing the ubiquity of keywords in the text such as honor, virtue, reason, shame and faith. By holding characters to the fire of their sacred values, I shift the actor’s attention from an individualist idea of authentic representation towards a sense of character as a battleground of mind-shaping. The resulting performance work is scaled up to a more expansive and energized degree than the actor may be used to delivering in a social media-saturated environment in which what is often prioritized is a quasi-confessional self-revelation. The revelation of an inner life then emerges through a committed exploration of antithetical relations, a strategy basic both to mask work and to Shakespeare’s poetics. The actor finds their personal connection to the material by facing the contradiction between the objective standards of behavior demanded of the character and the character’s attempt to control their status, that is, how they are seen. The final value of the performance work is that the actor learns how to manage their reputation so that they come to appear like a giant who is seen from a distance. Full article

This paper creates a global similarity network between city-level dialects of English in order to determine whether external factors like the amount of population contact or language contact influence dialect similarity. While previous computational work has focused on external influences that contribute to phonological or lexical similarity, this paper focuses on grammatical variation as operationalized in computational construction grammar. Social media data was used to create comparable English corpora from 256 cities across 13 countries. Each sample is represented using the type frequency of various constructions. These frequency representations are then used to calculate pairwise similarities between city-level dialects; a prediction-based evaluation shows that these similarity values are highly accurate. Linguistic similarity is then compared with four external factors: (i) the amount of air travel between cities, a proxy for population contact, (ii) the difference in the linguistic landscapes of each city, a proxy for language contact, (iii) the geographic distance between cities, and (iv) the presence of political boundaries separating cities. The results show that, while all these factors are significant, the best model relies on language contact and geographic distance. Full article

To improve the accuracy of Japanese finger-spelled character recognition using an RGB camera, we focused on feature design and refinement of the recognition method. By leveraging angular features extracted via MediaPipe, we proposed a method that effectively captures subtle motion differences while minimizing the influence of background and surrounding individuals. We constructed a large-scale dataset that includes not only the basic 50 Japanese syllables but also those with diacritical marks, such as voiced sounds (e.g., “ga”, “za”, “da”) and semi-voiced sounds (e.g., “pa”, “pi”, “pu”), to enhance the model’s ability to recognize a wide variety of characters. In addition, the application of a change-point detection algorithm enabled accurate segmentation of sign language motion boundaries, improving word-level recognition performance. These efforts laid the foundation for a highly practical recognition system. However, several challenges remain, including the limited size and diversity of the dataset and the need for further improvements in segmentation accuracy. Future work will focus on enhancing the model’s generalizability by collecting more diverse data from a broader range of participants and incorporating segmentation methods that consider contextual information. Ultimately, the outcomes of this research should contribute to the development of educational support tools and sign language interpretation systems aimed at real-world applications. Full article

Background: This study investigated the relationship between problematic media use (PMU) and working memory in preschoolers. Methods: Parents of children aged 3 to 7 (260 boys, 257 girls; Mage = 5.57, SD = 0.73) in Jinan, China, completed questionnaires assessing children’s PMU and working memory. Subsequently, High (nhigh = 32, Mage = 4.53, SD = 0.67) and Low (nlow = 30, Mage = 4.67, SD = 0.66) PMU groups, based on the survey data, complete a dual 1-back task during functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recording. Results: Behavioral accuracy and reaction time showed no significant group differences. However, a significant interaction between the PMU group and gender on prefrontal activation was observed, F(1, 60) = 5.88–7.59, ps < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.09–0.12. High-PMU boys exhibited greater left prefrontal activation than low-PMU boys, while low-PMU girls showed greater activation in these same areas compared to low-PMU boys. A three-way interaction of group, task condition, and gender on prefrontal activation was also found, F(2, 60) = 5.81–6.42, p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.10–0.19, suggesting that neural responses varied by task and participant characteristics. Conclusions: These findings indicate that PMU may be associated with altered prefrontal activation during working memory tasks in preschoolers, with gender playing a moderating role. Full article

This study focuses on the analysis of soliton solutions within the framework of the time-fractional cubic–quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (TFCQ-NLSE), a powerful model with broad applications in complex physical phenomena such as fiber optic communications, nonlinear optics, optical signal processing, and laser–tissue interactions in medical science. The nonlinear effects exhibited by the model—such as self-focusing, self-phase modulation, and wave mixing—are influenced by the combined impact of the cubic and quintic nonlinear terms. To explore the dynamics of this model, we apply a robust analytical technique known as the sub-ODE method, which reveals a diverse range of soliton structures and offers deep insight into laser pulse interactions. The investigation yields a rich set of explicit soliton solutions, including hyperbolic, rational, singular, bright, Jacobian elliptic, Weierstrass elliptic, and periodic solutions. These waveforms have significant real-world relevance: bright solitons are employed in fiber optic communications for distortion-free long-distance data transmission, while both bright and dark solitons are used in nonlinear optics to study light behavior in media with intensity-dependent refractive indices. Solitons also contribute to advancements in quantum technologies, precision measurement, and fiber laser systems, where hyperbolic and periodic solitons facilitate stable, high-intensity pulse generation. Additionally, in nonlinear acoustics, solitons describe wave propagation in media where amplitude influences wave speed. Overall, this work highlights the theoretical depth and practical utility of soliton dynamics in fractional nonlinear systems. Full article

Small news media organizations are increasingly reshaping the news media system in Latin America. They are stepping into the role of watchdogs by investigating issues such as corruption scandals that larger outlets sometimes overlook. However, this journalistic work exposes both journalists and their organizations to a range of security threats, including physical violence, legal pressure, and digital attacks. In response, these outlets have developed coping strategies to manage and mitigate such risks. This article presents an exploratory study of the approaches adopted to protect information and data, ensure the safety and well-being of journalists, and maintain organizational continuity. Based on a series of in-depth interviews with leaders of award-winning news organizations for their investigative reporting, the study examines a shift from a competitive newsroom model to a collaborative approach in which information is shared—sometimes across borders—to support investigative reporting and strengthen security practices. We identify strategies implemented by small news organizations to safeguard their journalistic work and propose an integrative model of news safety encompassing the following three areas of security: physical, legal, and digital. This study contributes to the development of the newsafety framework and sheds light on safety practices that support media freedom. Full article

This paper proposes a multi-hop peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming architecture designed to support dynamic, conversation-aware communication. The primary contribution is a decentralized system built on WebRTC that eliminates reliance on a central media server by employing super node aggregation. In this architecture, video streams from multiple peer nodes are dynamically routed through a group of super nodes, enabling real-time reconfiguration of the network topology in response to conversational changes. To support this dynamic behavior, the system leverages WebRTC data channels for control signaling and overlay restructuring, allowing efficient dissemination of topology updates and coordination messages among peers. A key focus of this study is the rapid and efficient reallocation of network resources immediately following conversational events, ensuring that the streaming overlay remains aligned with ongoing interaction patterns. While the automatic detection of such events is beyond the scope of this work, we assume that external triggers are available to initiate topology updates. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, we construct a simulation environment using Docker containers and evaluate its streaming performance under dynamic network conditions. The results demonstrate the system’s applicability to adaptive, naturalistic communication scenarios. Finally, we discuss future directions, including the seamless integration of external trigger sources and enhanced support for flexible, context-sensitive interaction frameworks. Full article

Vocative Che in Falkland Islands English: Identity, Contact, and Enregisterment

Falkland Islands English (FIE) began its development in the first half of the 19th century. In part, as a consequence of its youth, FIE is an understudied variety. It shares some morphosyntactic features with other anglophone countries in the Southern Hemisphere, but it also shares lexical features with regional varieties of Spanish, including Rioplatense Spanish. Che is one of many South American words that have entered FIE through Spanish, with its spelling ranging from “chay” and “chey” to “ché”. The word has received some marginal attention in terms of its meaning. It is said to be used in a similar way to the British dear or love and the Australian mate, and it has been compared to chum or pal, and is taken as an equivalent of the River Plate, hey!, hi!, or I say!. In this work, we explore the hypothesis that che entered FIE through historical contact with Rioplatense Spanish, drawing on both linguistic and sociohistorical evidence, and presenting survey, corpus, and ethnographic data that illustrate its current vitality, usage, and social meanings among FIE speakers. In situ observations, fieldwork, and an online survey were used to look into the vitality of che. Concomitantly, by crawling social media and the local press, enough data was gathered to build a small corpus to further study its vitality. A thorough literature review was conducted to hypothesise about the borrowing process involving its entry into FIE. The findings confirm that the word is primarily a vocative, it is commonly used, and it is indicative of a sense of belonging to the Falklands community. Although there is no consensus on the origin of che in the River Plate region, it seems to be the case that it entered FIE during the intense Spanish–English contact that took place during the second half of the 19th century.
