Equestrian sports play a significant economic role in the horse industry. In recent years, numerous equine viruses have emerged, among which are equine Pegiviruses and the re-emerging Equine coronavirus (ECoV). These viruses are distributed globally and primarily cause subclinical infections with unknown morbidity, even if ECoV can occasionally induce febrile and diarrheic episodes. To broaden the data on the Italian equine population, a study was conducted to assess their prevalence in two distinct horse populations belonging to the Carabinieri Corps (CC) and the Italian Army (IA) of the Italian Armed Forces (IAF). Samples consisted of blood serum and rectal swabs of 436 horses collected within the national surveillance program for equine infectious anemia and gastrointestinal parasite monitoring and analyzed for Pegivirus (caballi and equi) and ECoV by Real-Time RT PCR. The prevalence detected were 6.56% and 3.53%, respectively, for Pegivirus caballi and equi for the IA, while for the CC, they were 10.13% and 0.84%. Only one sample tested positive for ECoV belonging to a horse of the CC. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out on the PCR-positive samples that were sequenced using Sanger protocols. Understanding the epidemiology of these viruses is essential for evaluating the implementation of effective prevention strategies. Full article

Chiroptera includes over 1400 bat species, with at least 35 of these present in Italy. Due to their role as Lyssavirus reservoirs, bats found dead, with and without signs suggestive of this infection, are routinely submitted to the laboratory network of the Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali in the framework of the rabies national passive and active surveillance program. Carcasses and biological samples collected from January to December 2021 in Latium and Tuscany, regions of our jurisdiction, were further screened for the presence of Coronaviruses (CoVs) and Herpesviruses using pan-family virus PCR tests, and relative PCR products were Sanger sequenced. Genetic characterization through sequencing detected AlphaCoVs in Miniopterus schreibersii and Beta- and Gammaherpesviruses in Tadarida teniotis. Sugary phloem exudates are produced by many plant species and play key roles in carbon storage, defense, and ecological interactions. Among eucalypts, one such exudate, manna, is an important carbohydrate source for birds, mammals, and insects. Despite its ecological relevance, little is known about the composition and intra-specific variability of manna. Here, we investigated patterns of manna production in Eucalyptus viminalis, a widespread foundation tree species in southeastern Australia. We developed a repeatable ex situ method to extract and analyze manna, allowing us to characterize its sugar composition and examine variation within and between trees. Across years, manna contained six sugars, with sucrose and raffinose dominant. We found substantial variation in both the quality (sucrose/raffinose ratio) and quantity (mg) of manna produced. Both declined with increasing tree size (DBH), while quality increased with branch circumference. Seasonal and annual variation in manna was also evident, with quality increasing under drier conditions (positive correlation with aridity). Our findings demonstrate substantial intra-specific variation in phloem exudates (manna), shaped by temporal and tree-level factors. These patterns offer a foundation for future research into the ecological and physiological drivers of exudate variation and resource availability in foundation species like E. viminalis. Background/Objectives: Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) is a multifactorial condition that affects in many ways the daily life of patients suffering from it. Different psychological factors demonstrated to be associated with the genesis and maintenance of CPP. Less is known about the role of the Psychological Flexibility (PF) model. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the PF domains, psychological distress, pain, and quality of life in patients with chronic pelvic pain. Methods: A total of 114 women with a diagnosis of chronic pelvic pain were included in this study. Participants completed online self-report measures to assess psychological distress (anxiety, depression, stress), Psychological Flexibility, Pain interference, and Quality of life. Results: Psychological distress and Psychological Flexibility showed significant association with pain interference. Other PF dimensions related to pain interference were as follows: self as context, defusion, and values. Physical Quality of life showed significant association with Experiential avoidance and Lack of values clarity, while Mental Quality of life was associated with Psychological Inflexibility and Self as content. Conclusions: Psychological distress and Psychological Flexibility have a role in pain perception and its interference with a patient’s daily life, affecting also physical and mental quality of life of CPP patients. The adjuvant treatment landscape for hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2–) early breast cancer (EBC) is rapidly evolving, with a diverse range of therapeutic options—including endocrine therapies, bisphosphonates, ovarian function suppression, olaparib, CDK4/6 inhibitors, and emerging agents such as immunotherapy. While these advances have markedly improved patient outcomes, they also introduce challenges related to implementation, monitoring, and resource allocation. Notably, therapies like CDK4/6 inhibitors require particularly close monitoring, creating logistical and capacity challenges for medical oncologists, whose workloads are already stretched due to rising cancer incidence and treatment complexities. These challenges underscore the need for innovative care delivery solutions to ensure patients with EBC continue to receive optimal care. This paper offers a comprehensive guide—a playbook—of multidisciplinary-team-based care models designed to optimize adjuvant treatment delivery in EBC. Drawing on real-world evidence and successful applications across Canadian centers, we explore models led by nurses, nurse practitioners (NPs), general practitioners in oncology (GPO), and pharmacists. Each model leverages the unique expertise of its team to manage treatment toxicities, facilitate adherence, and enhance patient education, thereby promoting effective and sustainable care delivery. Importantly, these models are not intended to compete with one another, but rather to serve as a flexible recipe book from which breast cancer care teams can draw strategies tailored to their local resources and patient needs. By detailing implementation strategies, benefits, and challenges—in many instances supported by quantitative metrics and economic evaluations—this work aims to inspire care teams nationwide to optimize the adjuvant management of patients with HR+, HER2– EBC. Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) is a commensal bacterium of the skin microbiota that can transform itself into a pathogen depending on the peculiar susceptibility of the host: it is the sole microorganism so far to be found in the specific organ lesions of sarcoidosis, and C. acnes-induced activation of T-helper-type-1 cell responses is generally higher in patients with sarcoidosis than in healthy subjects. This bacterium acts as an opportunistic agent in several inflammatory conditions other than sarcoidosis, such as prostate cancer and prosthetic joint infections. Both innate and adaptive immunity systems are involved in the pathogenesis of C. acnes-mediated sarcoid lesions, and a seminal role is played by host toll-like receptor (TLR)-2, TLR-4, TLR-6, NOD-like receptors, and mononuclear cell cytoplasmic receptors. This review summarizes current knowledge on the potential cause–effect relationship existing between C. acnes and sarcoidosis, addressing issues of future research directions and novel therapeutic strategies in the management of a complex disease such as sarcoidosis. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. L.), traditionally cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, is being explored for its agronomic viability in Mediterranean climates. This study assessed the bio-agronomic performance of seven sugarcane varieties and two accessions grown in Sicily, to enhance the fermentation process to produce rum agricole, a spirit derived from fresh cane juice. Agronomic evaluations revealed significant varietal differences, with juice yields of 5850−14,312 L ha−1 and sugar yields of 1.84–5.33 t ha−1. Microbial control was achieved through the addition of lactic acid, which effectively suppressed undesirable bacterial growth and improved fermentation quality. Furthermore, the application of two selected Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains (MN113 and SPF21), isolated from high-sugar matrices such as manna and honey byproducts, affected the production of volatile compounds, particularly esters and higher alcohols. Sensory analysis confirmed a more complex aromatic profile in cane wines fermented with these selected yeasts, with overall acceptance scores reaching 7.5. Up to 29 aroma-active compounds were identified, including ethyl esters and higher alcohols. This research represents the first integrated approach combining lactic acid treatment and novel yeast strains for the fermentation of sugarcane juice in a Mediterranean context. The findings highlight the potential for high-quality rum agricole production in Sicily. Full article

Field surveys focused on detailed mapping and measurements of coseismic surface ruptures along the causative fault of the 6 February 2023, Mw 7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake. The aim was filling gaps in the previously available surface-faulting trace, validating the accuracy of data obtained from remote sensing, refining fault offset estimates, and gaining a deeper understanding of both the local and overall patterns of the main rupture strands. Measurements and observations confirm dominating sinistral strike-slip movement. An integrated and comprehensive slip distribution curve shows peaks reaching over 700 cm, highlighting the near-fault expressing up to 70% of the deep net offset. In general, the slip distribution curve shows a strong correlation with the larger north-eastern deformation of the geodetic far field dislocation field and major deep slip patches. The overall rupture trace is generally straight and narrow with significant geometric complexities at a local scale. This results in transtensional and transpressional secondary structures, as multi-strand positive and negative tectonic flowers, hosting different patterns of the mole-tracks at the outcrop scale. The comprehensive and detailed field survey allowed characterizing the structural framework and geometric complexity of the surface faulting, ensuring accurate offset measurements and the reliable interpretation of both morphological and geometric features. This study elucidates potential genetic determinants and mechanisms involved in the synergistic effects of daptomycin (DAP) + fosfomycin (FOF) combination therapy. Among 33 clinically derived DAP-susceptible (S)/DAP-resistant (R) isogenic strain pairs, mutations in the mprF gene occurred in 30/33 DAP-R strains, including polymorphisms of L826F (33%) or T345A/L/I (15%). Strain variants of DAP-S CB1483 serially passaged in vitro for 10 days in DAP +/− FOF identified a key non-synonymous mutation in mprF (L826F) only in the DAP monotherapy arm. Interestingly, passage in FOF alone or DAP + FOF prevented the emergence of this mprF mutation following 10-day passage. This L826F mprF polymorphism, associated with a “gain-in-function” phenotype, exhibited increased amounts of lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol (L-PG) in the cell membrane (CM). Transcriptomics revealed a relatively modest number (~10) of distinct genes that were significantly up- or downregulated (≥2 log fold) in both the DAP-S and DAP-R strain pairs upon DAP + FOF exposures (vs. DAP or FOF alone). Of note, DAP + FOF decreased expression of lrgAB and sdrE and increased the expression level of fosB. In a rabbit infective endocarditis (IE) model, the DAP-R CB185 strain treated with DAP +/− FOF showed significantly reduced lrgB expression in vegetations compared with DAP treatment alone. Overall, these findings indicate that DAP + FOF therapy impacts MRSA through multiple specific mechanisms, enhancing bacterial clearance. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened awareness of airborne disease susceptibility, leading to the development and adoption of various preventive technologies. Among these, microwave sanitization, which inactivates virions through non-thermal mechanical resonance, has gained significant scientific credibility. Laboratory tests have demonstrated its high efficacy, prompting further investigation into its effectiveness in real-world settings. This study employs multi-physical, fluid-dynamic and electromagnetic simulations of office environments to evaluate the reduction of contagion risk. By integrating these simulations with virus inactivation experimental laboratory results, we observed that the introduction of a microwave sanitization device significantly reduces the risk of contamination among individuals in the same environment. These findings suggest potential applications and further studies in other everyday scenarios. Full article

The synthesis and characterization of two novel redox-active MOFs/CPs based on 3d transition metal ions and 3,6-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone (trz2An) are reported herein. By combining trz2An with NiII and MnII ions via the hydrothermal method, two phases, formulated as [Ni2(trz2An)2]·2.5H2O (1) and [Mn(trz2An)(H2O)]·1.5H2O (2), are obtained. Both compounds crystallize as neutral polymeric 3D frameworks, where the metal ions are coordinated through the oxygen atoms of the anilate linkers forming either straight (1) or zig-zag (2) 1D chains. In particular, (1) is a MOF, where these chains are connected through the nitrogen atom at the 4 position of the triazolyl group, which completes the coordination sphere of each metal ion, affording a 3D structure containing a void volume of 28.7% and voids that can be useful for the sorption of small molecules. Interestingly, (1) and (2) show a redox behavior due to the presence of the anilate linker, being reduced electrochemically in the −0.7 to −0.9 V range due to the benzoquinone–semiquinone one-electron reduction and magnetic behavior dominated by antiferromagnetic interactions in the anilate 1D chains. Despite preliminary literature indicating the importance of caregivers, little research has focused on the caregiver’s role in supporting personal recovery in youth. Methods: This study sought to understand the role of caregivers in youth recovery by employing a qualitative design to inductively analyze the narratives from nine semi-structured interviews with caregivers. Additionally, deductive analysis explored the core five underpinnings of personal recovery connectedness, hope, identity, meaning, and empowerment (CHIME). Results: A thematic analysis of the literature identified five themes: providing unconditional love and positive regard; encouraging connection with peers; co-creating a sense of purpose, meaning, and hope; supporting assertiveness and advocacy; and promoting strength and opportunity for mastery aligning with the CHIME framework. The findings will allow health services to understand caregivers’ roles better, thus providing information to guide recovery-oriented and family-centered care. Full article

Exposure Time Dependence of Operators’ Head Entrance Air Kerma in Interventional Radiology Measured by TLD-100H Chips

Interventional radiology offers minimally invasive procedures guided by real-time imaging, reducing surgical risks and enhancing patient recovery. While beneficial to patients, these advancements increase occupational hazards for physicians due to chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. This exposure raises health risks like radiation-induced cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Despite regulations like the European Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM, which sets limits on whole-body and eye lens doses, no dose limits exist for the brain and meninges, since the brain has traditionally been considered a radioresistant organ. Recent studies, however, have highlighted radiation-induced brain damage, suggesting that meningeal exposure in interventional radiology may be underestimated. This study evaluates the entrance air Cumulative mean annual entrance air kerma to the skullull during interventional radiology procedures, using thermoluminescent dosimeters and controlled exposure simulations. Data were collected by varying the exposure time and analyzing the contribution to the entrance air kerma on each side of the head. The results indicate that, considering the attenuation of the cranial bone, the absorbed dose to the brain, obtained by averaging the head entrance air kerma for the right, front, and left sides of the operator’s head, could represent 0.81% to 2.18% of the annual regulatory limit in Italy of 20 mSv for the average annual effective dose of exposed workers (LD 101/2020). These results provide an assessment of brain exposure, highlighting the relatively low but non-negligible contribution of brain irradiation to the overall occupational dose constraint. Additionally, a correlation between entrance air kerma and the Kerma-Area Product was observed, providing a potential method for improved dose estimation and enhanced radiation safety for interventional radiologists. Severe COVID-19 is often associated with coagulopathy and thrombotic complications. The underlying mechanisms are complex and multifactorial, involving platelet activation, dysregulation of the complement cascade, fibrinolytic imbalance, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, immunothrombosis, antiphospholipid antibodies, and alterations in the von Willebrand factor (vWF)/ADAMTS13 axis. These pathways are also implicated in thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs), characterized by endothelial injury and widespread microvascular thrombosis. In this prospective monocentric observational study, we investigated whether COVID-19-associated coagulopathy meets the criteria for TMA and evaluated the roles of complement activation and vWF/ADAMTS13 imbalance in disease severity. Forty-three hospitalized COVID-19 patients were enrolled and stratified by disease severity. Blood samples collected at admission were analyzed for hematologic, coagulation, inflammatory, and complement parameters. A 30-day follow-up recorded survival and thrombotic events. All patients showed elevated vWF and factor VIII levels; however, only vWF collagen-binding activity (vWF-CBA) significantly correlated with disease severity. ADAMTS13 activity remained above 60% in all cases, and no schistocytes were detected, arguing against a diagnosis of classical TMA. Nevertheless, the vWF-CBA/ADAMTS13 ratio was significantly higher in severe cases, particularly in unvaccinated individuals, suggesting endothelial dysregulation. Complement analysis revealed increased C5a levels and decreased C3b/iC3b ratios in severe disease, consistent with complement activation and consumption. C2 levels were also lower in these patients. Although complement activation and vWF/ADAMTS13 imbalance did not directly correlate, both pathways showed a similar trend according to disease severity. Overall, our findings indicate that COVID-19-related coagulopathy does not fulfill the criteria for classical TMA but shows features of complement-mediated endothelial injury and vWF dysregulation. The vWF-CBA may serve as a rapid, standardized tool for assessing endothelial dysfunction. Activation of the complement system, particularly via the lectin and alternative pathways, appears central to the prothrombotic state in severe COVID-19. Full article
