Magnetic photonic crystal microspheres (MPCMs) have emerged as a versatile platform for intelligent sensing and display applications, owing to their integration of magnetic actuation with structural coloration. However, their practical implementation is limited by a fundamental structural constraint: most reported MPCMs adopt anisotropic architectures, resulting in angle-dependent optical responses that require continuous magnetic alignment to maintain uniform coloration. Herein, we propose a different structural paradigm based on non-close-packed, optically isotropic MPCMs. Driven by electrostatic repulsion in solutions, monodisperse Fe3O4@tannic acid (TA) core–shell nanoparticles spontaneously assemble into non-close-packed amorphous colloidal arrays, also known as photonic glasses, which are subsequently immobilized within stimuli-responsive polymer networks via emulsification-assisted thermal polymerization. By integrating poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) (HEMA–NVP) or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as responsive matrices, the resulting MPCMs exhibit sensitive solvent- or thermo-dependent optical responses. Crucially, structural isotropy ensures angle-independent coloration, eliminating the need for continuous magnetic alignment during optical readout. As evidenced by the unchanged structural color and reflection peak under various magnetic field orientations, this design effectively decouples optical sensing from magnetic actuation. The intrinsic free volume of the non-close-packed architecture allows for isotropic lattice expansion and contraction, leading to broad spectral tunability. Collectively, this work establishes a promising design framework for magnetic photonic microsensors. Full article

A simple and innovative synthesis strategy was established to produce polymer microspheres with a distinctive walnut-like morphology, incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles within their structure. This was achieved through γ-ray-initiated mini-emulsion polymerization. To ensure high encapsulation efficiency, the surface of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles was chemically altered to shift their wettability from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, enabling uniform dispersion within the monomer phase before polymerization. The formation of the walnut-like architecture was found to be significantly influenced by both the polymerization dynamics and phase separation, as well as the shrinkage of the crosslinked polymer network formed between the monomer and the resulting polymer. Divinylbenzene (DVB) was chosen as the monomer due to its ability to generate a mechanically stable polymer framework. The γ-ray irradiation effectively initiated polymerization while preserving structural coherence. A detailed analysis using FTIR, SEM, and TEM confirmed the successful fabrication of the Fe3O4-loaded polymer microspheres with their characteristic textured surface. Moreover, magnetic characterization via vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) indicated pronounced superparamagnetic behavior and strong magnetic responsiveness, highlighting the potential of these microspheres for advanced biomedical applications. Recently, various biocompatible and biodegradable materials have garnered significant attention as cosmetic fillers for skin rejuvenation. Among these, poly ε-caprolactone (PCL), poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), poly D,L-lactic acid (PDLLA), and polydioxanone (PDO) microspheres have been developed and commercialized as a dermal filler. However, its irregularly hydrophobic microspheres pose hydration challenges, often causing syringe needle blockages and side effects such as delayed onset nodules and papules after the procedure. In this study, we synthesized a polyethylene glycol-poly D,L-lactic acid (mPEG-PDLLA) copolymer to address the limitations of conventional polymer fillers. Comprehensive characterization of the copolymer was performed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The mPEG-PDLLA copolymers demonstrated a unimodal size distribution of approximately 121 ± 20 nm in an aqueous solution. The in vitro cytotoxicity and collagen genesis of mPEG-PDLLA copolymers were evaluated using human dermal fibroblast cells. In this study, angiogenesis was observed over time in hairless mice injected with mPEG-PDLLA copolymers, confirming its potential role in enhancing collagen synthesis. To assess the inflammatory response, the expression levels of the genes MMP1 and IL-1β were analyzed. Additionally, gene expression levels such as transforming growth factor-β and collagen types I and III were compared with Rejuran® in animal studies. The newly developed collagen-stimulating PEGylated PDLLA may be a safe and effective option for skin rejuvenation. Full article

In the process of oil extraction, the drilling fluid, as a critical operational fluid, directly impacts the drilling efficiency and safety. However, under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, the drilling fluid tends to experience fluid loss, which not only causes environmental pollution but also increases the drilling costs and challenges. To address this issue, this study aimed to develop a novel high-temperature-resistant and environmentally friendly polymer fluid loss additive—EnSipoly-FL—designed to enhance the thermal stability and environmental performance of drilling fluids. The copolymerization of acrylamide (AM), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), acrylic acid (AA), and vinyltrimethoxysilane (A-171) was selected to ensure the thermal and chemical stability of the fluid loss additive. The synthesis conditions, including the initiators, emulsifiers, reaction temperature, and time, were optimized in the experiments. The structure of the target product was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis and particle size analysis demonstrated that the polymer possessed excellent thermal stability and appropriate physical dimensions. Environmental impact assessments indicated that EnSipoly-FL exhibited good biodegradability and low toxicity, meeting environmental protection standards. Comprehensive performance tests showed that the polymer microspheres exhibited exceptional fluid loss reduction capabilities and environmental friendliness in high-temperature and high-pressure drilling fluid applications. This makes it a promising candidate for widespread use in the oil drilling industry, advancing the green development of drilling fluid technology. Full article

The modified suspension polymerization technique has been used for the preparation of composite microparticles from the mixture of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), styrene (S), and divinylbenzene (DVB) in the presence of hydrophobized Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The obtained polymer microspheres were characterized using different instrumental and physicochemical techniques, modified with a zero-order PAMAM dendrimer, and impregnated with palladium(II) acetate solutions to immobilize palladium(II) ions. The resulting materials were preliminarily examined as catalysts in the Suzuki reaction between 4-bromotoluene and phenylboronic acid. It was found that the addition of magnetite particles to the composition of monomers provided polymer microparticles with embedded magnetic nanoparticles. The composite microparticles obtained showed a complex, multi-hollow, or raspberry-like morphology. After their modification, they could serve as recyclable catalysts for reactions that include both 4-bromotoluene and several other aryl bromides. Full article

Nano-elastic microspheres are particle-absorbent polymers that can be applied in plugging water. They plug pores and throats, reducing the damage from water invasion. The plug effect and flow mechanism of nano-elastic microspheres during water invasion were investigated in this paper through laboratory experiments. The results of the plugging experiments show that the nano-elastic microspheres had a higher plugging rate and formed physical plugs in the aquiferous region, thus preventing water invasion. Online nuclear magnetic resonance experiments indicated that the nano-elastic microspheres migrated from large pores to smaller ones during the flow process, forming elastic plugs in the porous media. The nano-elastic microspheres expanded in the aquiferous layer, increasing the flow resistance through both physical and elastic plugging, thereby reducing the water cut. Nano-elastic microspheres employed physical plugging to prevent water invasion and exhibited elastic flow in the porous media during the invasion. Full article

Curcumin (CUR) has potent anticancer activities, and its bioformulations, including biodegradable polymers, are increasingly able to improve CUR’s solubility, stability, and delivery to cancer cells. In this study, copolymers comprising poly (L-lactide)-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (L-lactide) (PLA-PEG-PLA) and poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (L-lactide)-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG-PLA-PEG) were designed and synthesized to assess and compare their CUR-delivery capacity and inhibitory potency on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Molecular dynamics simulations and free energy analysis indicated that PLA-PEG-PLA has a higher propensity to interact with the cell membrane and more negative free energy, suggesting it is the better carrier for cell membrane penetration. To characterize the copolymer synthesis, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) were employed, copolymer size was measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS), and their surface charge was determined by zeta potential analysis. Characterization indicated that the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reaction was optimal for synthesizing high-quality polymers. Microspheres comprising the copolymers were then synthesized successfully. Of the two formulations, PLA-PEG-PLA experimentally exhibited better results, with an initial burst release of 17.5%, followed by a slow, constant release of the encapsulated drug up to 80%. PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR showed a significant increase in cell death in MCF-7 cancer cells (IC50 = 23.01 ± 0.85 µM) based on the MTT assay. These data were consistent with gene expression studies of Bax, Bcl2, and hTERT, which showed that PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR induced apoptosis more efficiently in these cells. Through the integration of nano-informatics and in vitro approaches, our study determined that PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR is an optimal system for delivering curcumin to inhibit cancer cells. Full article

The choice of carrier material is critical in the study of natural drug release preparations and glycosylated magnetic molecularly imprinted materials. The stiffness and softness of the carrier material affect the efficiency of drug release and the specificity of recognition. The dual adjustable aperture-ligand in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) provides the possibility of individualized design for sustained release studies. In this study, a combination of paramagnetic Fe3O4 and carboxymethyl chitosan (CC) was used to enhance the imprinting effect and improve drug delivery. A combination of tetrahydrofuran and ethylene glycol was used as a binary porogen to prepare MIP-doped Fe3O4-grafted CC (SMCMIP). Salidroside serves as the template, methacrylic acid acts as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) serves as the crosslinker. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to observe the micromorphology of the microspheres. The structural and morphological parameters of the SMCMIP composites were measured, including the surface area and pore diameter distribution. In an in vitro study, we found that the SMCMIP composite had a sustained release property of 50% after 6 h of release time in comparison to the control SMCNIP. The total amounts of SMCMIP released at 25 °C and 37 °C were 77% and 86%, respectively. In vitro results showed that the release of SMCMIP followed Fickian kinetics, meaning that the rate of release is dependent on the concentration gradient, with diffusion coefficients ranging from 3.07 × 10−2 cm2/s to 5.66 × 10−3 cm2/s. The results of cytotoxicity experiments showed that the SMCMIP composite did not have any harmful effects on cell growth. The survival rates of intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) were found to be above 98%. By using the SMCMIP composite, drugs may be delivered in a sustained manner, potentially leading to improved therapeutic outcomes and reduced side effects. Full article

The severe water pollution from effluent dyes threatens human health. This study created pH-magnetic-photocatalytic polymer microspheres to conveniently separate the photocatalyst nanoparticles from the treated water by applying an external magnetic field. While fabricating magnetic nanoparticles’ (MNPs) microspheres, incorporating 0.5 wt.% iron oxide (Fe3O4) showed the best magnetophoretic separation ability, as all the MNPs microspheres were attracted toward the external magnet. Subsequently, hybrid organic–inorganic polyoxometalates (HPOM), a self-synthesized photocatalyst, were linked with the functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (f-MNPs) to prepare augmented magnetic-photocatalytic microspheres. The photodegradation dye removal efficiency of the augmented magnetic-photocatalytic microspheres (f-MNPs-HPOM) was then compared with that of the commercial titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst (f-MNPs-TiO2). Results showed that f-MNPs-HPOM microspheres with 74 ± 0.7% photocatalytic removal efficiency better degraded methylene orange (MO) than f-MNPs-TiO2 (70 ± 0.8%) at an unadjusted pH under UV-light irradiation for 90 min. The excellent performance was mainly attributed to the lower band-gap energy of HPOM (2.65 eV), which required lower energy to be photoactivated under UV light. The f-MNPs-HPOM microspheres demonstrated excellent reusability and stability in the photo-decolorization of MO, as the microspheres retained nearly the same removal percentage throughout the three continuous cycles. The degradation rate was also found to follow the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, f-MNPs-HPOM microspheres were pH-responsive in the photodegradation of MO and methylene blue (MB) at pH 3 (acidic) and pH 9 (alkaline). Overall, it was demonstrated that using HPOM photocatalysts in the preparation of magnetic-photocatalytic microspheres resulted in better dye degradation than TiO2 photocatalysts. Full article

The magnetic polymer microsphere is a promising adsorbent due to its high adsorption efficiency and good regeneration ability from wastewater. Cassava starch magnetic porous microspheres (AAM-MSMPMs) were synthesized by graft copolymerization in inverse emulsion. Mechanically activated cassava starch (MS) was used to graft skeletons, vinyl monomers [acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM)] as copolymerized unsaturated monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the dispersing agent, and polyethylene glycol/methanol (PEG2000/MeOH) as the porogen. It was found that the AAM-MSMPM adsorbent is superparamagnetic, the saturation magnetization is 14.9 emu·g–1, and it can be rapidly and directionally separated from Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. The FTIR indicated that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were grafted into MS. The AAM-MSMPM had good speroidization and a uniform size. After the porogen was added, the particle size of the AAM-MSMPM decreased from 19.00 to 7.00 nm, and the specific surface area increased from 7.00 to 35.00 m2·g–1. The pore volume increased from 0.03 to 0.13 cm3·g–1. The AAM-MSMPM exhibited a large specific surface area and provided more adsorption active sites for Cd(II) ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the AAM-MSMPM for Cd(II) ions was 210.68 mg·g–1, i.e., 81.02% higher than that without porogen. Additionally, the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM can be described by Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. A chemical reaction dominated the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM, and chemisorption was the rate-controlling step during the Cd(II) ion adsorption process. The AAM-MSMPM still had excellent stability after five consecutive reuses. Full article

Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 particles have been synthesized by solvothermal method, and a layer of dense silica sol polymer is coated on the surface prepared by sol-gel technique; then La(OH)3 covered the surface of silica sol polymer in an irregular shape by controlled in situ growth technology. These magnetic materials are characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS and VSM; the results show that La(OH)3 nanoparticles have successfully modified on Fe3O4 surface. The prepared Fe3O4@La(OH)3 inorganic polymer has been used as adsorbent to remove phosphate efficiently. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage and co-existing ions on phosphate removal are investigated. Moreover, the adsorption kinetic equation and isothermal model are used to describe the adsorption performance of Fe3O4@La(OH)3. It was observed that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 exhibits a fast equilibrium time of 20 min, high phosphate removal rate (>95.7%), high sorption capacity of 63.72 mgP/g, excellent selectivity for phosphate in the presence of competing ions, under the conditions of phosphate concentration 30 mgP/L, pH = 7, adsorbent dose 0.6 g/L and room temperature. The phosphate adsorption process by Fe3O4@La(OH)3 is best described by the pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the real samples and reusability experiment indicate that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 could be regenerated after desorption, and 92.78% phosphate removing remained after five cycles. Therefore, La(OH)3 nanoparticles deposited on the surface of monodisperse Fe3O4 microspheres have been synthesized for the first time by a controlled in-situ growth method. Experiments have proved that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 particles with fast separability, large adsorption capacity and easy reusability can be used as a promising material in the treatment of phosphate wastewater or organic pollutants containing phosphoric acid functional group. The development of adsorption materials which can efficiently isolate and enrich uranium is of great scientific significance to sustainable development and environmental protection. In this work, a novel phosphonic acid-functionalized magnetic microsphere adsorbent Fe3O4/P (GMA-MBA)-PO4 was developed by functionalized Fe3O4/P (GMA-MBA) prepared by distill-precipitation polymerization with O-phosphoethanolamine. The adsorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and kinetically followed the pseudo second-order model. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was 333.33 mg g−1 at 298 K. In addition, the adsorbent also had good acid resistance and superparamagnetic properties, which could be quickly separated by a magnetic field. XPS analysis showed that the adsorption of adsorbent mainly depended on the complexation of phosphonic acid group with uranium. This work offers a promising candidate for the application of magnetic adsorbents in the field of uranium separation and enrichment. Full article

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) osteogenic commitment before injection enhances bone regeneration therapy results. Piezoelectric stimulation may be an effective cue to promote MSCs pre-differentiation, and poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) cell culture supports, when combined with CoFe2O4 (CFO), offer a wireless in vitro stimulation strategy. Under an external magnetic field, CFO shift and magnetostriction deform the polymer matrix varying the polymer surface charge due to the piezoelectric effect. To test the effect of piezoelectric stimulation on MSCs, our approach is based on a gelatin hydrogel with embedded MSCs and PVDF-CFO electroactive microspheres. Microspheres were produced by electrospray technique, favouring CFO incorporation, crystallisation in β-phase (85%) and a crystallinity degree of around 55%. The absence of cytotoxicity of the 3D construct was confirmed 24 h after cell encapsulation. Cells were viable, evenly distributed in the hydrogel matrix and surrounded by microspheres, allowing local stimulation. Hydrogels were stimulated using a magnetic bioreactor, and no significant changes were observed in MSCs proliferation in the short or long term. Nevertheless, piezoelectric stimulation upregulated RUNX2 expression after 7 days, indicating the activation of the osteogenic differentiation pathway. These results open the door for optimising a stimulation protocol allowing the application of the magnetically activated 3D electroactive cell culture support for MSCs pre-differentiation before transplantation. Molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction to treat biological samples has attracted considerable attention. Herein, molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microspheres with porous structures were prepared by a combined suspension-iniferter polymerization method using capecitabine (CAP) as a template molecule. This material was subsequently used as a solid-phase extraction agent to separate and enrich drug molecules in urine samples. UV analysis revealed that methacrylate (MAA) was an ideal functional monomer, and 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR), Ultraviolet (UV), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic analyses were used to study the interaction forces between MAA and CAP, demonstrating that hydrogen bonding was the primary interaction force. MIPs with outstanding selectivity were successfully prepared, and the analysis of their surface morphology and chemical structure revealed a spherical morphology with small holes distributed across a rough surface. This surface morphology significantly reduced the mass transfer resistance of template molecules, providing an ideal template recognition effect. Using the molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction method, CAP and the structural analog cytidine (CYT) were pretreated in urine samples and quantified by HPLC. The results showed that CAP and CYT recoveries reached 97.2% and 39.8%, respectively, with a limit of detection of 10.0–50.0 µg·mL−1. This study provides a novel approach to drug molecule pretreatment that can be applied in drug separation and functional materials science fields. Full article

The modification of polymers can significantly improve the ability to remove rare earth ions from wastewater, but so far few studies have focused on the irradiation-induced grafting method. In this study, a novel magnetic chelating resin for Ce(III) uptake was first synthesized by suspension polymerization of PMMA@Fe3O4 microspheres followed by irradiation-induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and subsequent amination with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The FT-IR, SEM, TG and XRD characterization confirmed that we had successfully fabricated magnetic PMMA-PGMA-PEI microspheres with a well-defined structure and good thermal stability. The obtained adsorbent exhibited a satisfactory uptake capacity of 189.81 mg/g for Ce(III) at 318.15 K and an initial pH = 6.0. Additionally, the impact of the absorbed dose and GMA monomer concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration were thoroughly examined. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir models were able to describe the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption process well. In addition, the thermodynamic data indicated that the uptake process was spontaneous and endothermic. Altogether, this research enriched the Ce(III) trapping agent and provided a new method for the removal rare earth pollutants. Full article
