Spatial Correlation of Agricultural New Productive Forces and Strong Agricultural Province in Anhui Province of China

Developing agricultural new productive forces (ANPF) according to local conditions is a key strategy for agricultural modernization. Using panel data from 16 prefecture-level cities in Anhui Province from 2010 to 2022, this study constructed indicator systems for ANPF and the construction of a strong agricultural province (CSAP). The entropy-weight TOPSIS method was used to calculate the levels of ANPF and the SAP index. This study employed a modified gravity model and social network analysis (SNA) to investigate the spatial correlation and evolutionary characteristics of these networks. Geographical detectors were also used to identify the driving factors behind agricultural transformation. The findings indicate that both ANPF and CSAP showed an upward trend during the study period, with significant regional heterogeneity, with Central Anhui being the most prominent. This study revealed spatial spillover effects and strong network correlations between ANPF and CSAP, with the spatial network structure exhibiting characteristics of multi-core, multi-association, and multidimensional connections. The entities within the network are tightly connected, with no “isolated island” phenomenon, and Hefei, as the central hub, showed the highest number of connections. Laborer quality, tangible means of production, and new-quality industries emerged as the core driving forces, working in synergy to propel CSAP. This study contributes new insights into the spatial network dynamics of agricultural development and offers actionable recommendations for policymakers to enhance agricultural modernization globally. Cassava is the sixth most important food crop and is cultivated in more than 100 countries. The crop tolerates low soil fertility and drought, enabling it to play a role in climate adaptation strategies. Cassava generally requires careful preparation to remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) before its consumption, but HCN concentrations can vary considerably between varieties. Climate change and low inputs, particularly carbon and nutrients, affect agriculture in Pacific Island countries where cassava is commonly grown alongside traditional crops (e.g., taro). Despite increasing popularity in this region, there is limited experimental data about cassava crop management for different local varieties, their relative toxicity and nutritional value for human consumption, and their interaction with changing climate conditions. To help address this knowledge gap, three field experiments were conducted at the Koronivia Research Station of the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture. Two varieties of cassava with contrasting HCN content were planted at three different times coinciding with the start of the wet (September-October) or dry (April) seasons. A time series of measurements was conducted during the full 18-month or differing 6-month durations of each crop, based on destructive harvests and phenological observations. The former included determination of total biomass, HCN potential, carbon isotopes (δ13C), and elemental composition. Yield and nutritional value were significantly affected by variety and time of planting, and there were interactions between the two factors. Findings from this work will improve cassava management locally and will provide a valuable dataset for agronomic and biophysical model testing. Full article

Integrating nature-based solutions into sustainable urban design has become increasingly important in response to rapid urbanization and climate-related environmental challenges. As part of these solutions, green walls not only enhance the thermal and acoustic performance of buildings but also contribute to urban ecosystem health by supporting biodiversity. In this context, the careful selection of plant species is essential to ensure ecological efficiency, resilience, and low maintenance. This study presents a model for selecting plant species suitable for natural green walls in Mediterranean cities, with a focus on habitats protected under Directive 92/43/EEC. The selection followed a multi-phase process applied to the native flora of Italy, using criteria such as chorological type, life form, ecological indicator values, altitudinal range, and habitat type. Alien and invasive species were excluded, favoring only native Mediterranean species adapted to local pedoclimatic conditions and capable of providing ecosystem, esthetic, and functional benefits. The outcome of this rigorous screening led to the identification of a pool of species suitable for green wall systems in Mediterranean urban settings. These selections offer a practical contribution to mitigating the urban heat island effect, improving air quality, and enhancing biodiversity, thus providing a valuable tool for designing more sustainable and climate-adaptive buildings. Cultural heritage in insular regions faces increasing challenges due to overtourism, seasonal economies, and insufficient protection frameworks. This study investigates the adaptive reuse of Sarakina Mansion, a deteriorated 18th-century estate on the island of Zakynthos, as a model for integrating cultural heritage preservation with sustainable tourism. The research addresses the gap in localized strategies for heritage-led development in the context of islands with overtourism. Through a qualitative case study methodology—including site analysis, archival research, and stakeholder interviews—this paper explores how abandoned cultural assets can be reactivated to foster community engagement and diversify tourism models. Two distinct SWOT analyses were conducted as follows: one at the territorial level (Zakynthos Island) and another focused on the island’s cultural heritage. The findings highlight key obstacles such as environmental degradation and policy fragmentation, but they also reveal opportunities for adaptive reuse grounded in local identity and sustainable practices. The proposed reuse scenario for Sarakina promotes partial structural stabilization and community-driven cultural programming, aiming to create a hybrid open-air cultural hub. This study contributes a replicable framework for reimagining neglected heritage assets in overtourism-affected areas, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Full article

The adoption of e-government services in Small Island Developing Nations (SIDNs) aims to enhance public service efficiency, inclusiveness, and quality. However, e-government service development in SIDNs faces some significant constraints, including limited resources, geographical isolation, low digital literacy levels, and inadequate technological infrastructure. This study investigates value co-creation approaches in e-government service, aiming to identify specific value co-creation processes and methods to support sustainable e-government initiatives in SIDN settings. The study applies a qualitative approach; based on the thematic analysis of interviews with government stakeholders, it identifies contextual factors and conditions that influence e-government value co-creation processes in SIDNs and strategies for sustainable e-government service value co-creation. This study contributes a value co-creation framework that applies participatory design, agile development, collaborative governance, socio-technical thinking, and technology adaptation as methods for the design and implementation of flexible and inclusive e-government services that are responsive to local needs, resilient to challenges, and sustainable over time. The framework can be used by policymakers and practitioners to facilitate sustainable digital transformation in SIDNs through collaborative governance, active participation, and civic engagement with innovative technologies. Tinos Island, part of the Cyclades Complex in the central Aegean Sea, represents a distinctive case of geocultural heritage where geological formations and cultural identity intersect. This study evaluates the geoeducational and geotouristic potential of Tinos’ geosites using GEOAM methodology, which assesses their scientific, educational, and conservation value. Six geosites are examined to explore their geoeducational potential, including prominent locations such as the Tafoni formations and the Exombourgo granite massif. The findings highlight the significance of these sites, while also identifying challenges related to infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable management. By integrating geoethics into geotourism practices, Tinos can adopt a balanced approach that enhances environmental conservation alongside community-driven economic benefits. The study underscores the need for collaborative initiatives to optimize the island’s geoheritage for education and tourism, ensuring its long-term preservation. Geotourism, when responsibly implemented, has the potential to strengthen local identity while advancing sustainable tourism development. Full article

This research paper presents an assessment of geohazards on Lefkas Island, Greece, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map risk and enhance public awareness through an interactive web application. Natural hazards such as landslides, floods, wildfires, and desertification threaten both the safety of residents and the island’s tourism-dependent economy, particularly due to its seismic activity and Mediterranean climate. By combining the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction with GIS capabilities, we created detailed hazard maps that visually represent areas of susceptibility and provide critical insights for local authorities and the public. The web application developed serves as a user-friendly platform for disseminating hazard information and educational resources, thus promoting community preparedness and resilience. The findings highlight the necessity for proactive land management strategies and community engagement in disaster risk reduction efforts. This study underscores GIS’s pivotal role in fostering informed decision making and enhancing the safety of Lefkas Island’s inhabitants and visitors in the face of environmental challenges. This study identifies the optimal location for an offshore energy island to supply sustainable power to desalination plants along the Red Sea coast. As demand for clean energy in water production grows, integrating renewables into desalination systems becomes increasingly essential. A decision-making framework was developed to assess site feasibility based on renewable energy potential (solar, wind, and wave), marine traffic, site suitability, planned developments, and proximity to desalination facilities. Data was sourced from platforms such as Windguru and RETScreen, and spatial analysis was conducted using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Results indicate that the central Red Sea region offers the most favorable conditions, combining high renewable resource availability with existing infrastructure. The estimated regional desalination energy demand of 2.1 million kW can be met using available renewable sources. Integrating these sources is expected to reduce local CO2 emissions by up to 43.17% and global desalination-related emissions by 9.5%. Spatial constraints for offshore installations were also identified, with land-based solar energy proposed as a complementary solution. The study underscores the need for further research into wave energy potential in the Red Sea, due to limited real-time data and the absence of a dedicated wave energy atlas. Full article

While prime editing offers improved precision compared to traditional CRISPR-Cas9 systems, concerns remain regarding potential off-target effects, including epigenetic changes such as DNA methylation. In this study, we investigated whether prime editing induces aberrant CpG methylation patterns. Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing revealed overall methylation similarity between Cas9-edited, and PE2-edited cells. However, localized epigenetic changes were observed, particularly in CpG islands and exon regions. The PE2-edited group showed a higher proportion of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in some coding sequences compared to controls and Cas9-edited samples. Notably, CpG island methylation reached 0.18% in the PE2 vs. Cas9 comparison, indicating a higher susceptibility of these regulatory elements to epigenetic alterations by prime editing. Molecular function analyses including Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analyses further revealed enrichment in molecular functions related to transcriptional regulation and redox activity in PE2-edited cells. These findings suggest that prime editing, while precise, may introduce subtle but functionally relevant methylation changes that could influence gene expression and cellular pathways. In summary, prime editing can induce localized DNA methylation changes in human cells, particularly within regulatory and coding regions. Understanding these epigenetic consequences is critical for the development of safer and more effective therapeutic applications of genome editing technologies. Full article

The urban heat island (UHI) effect significantly impacts urban environments, particularly along roads, a phenomenon known as urban linear heat (UHIULI). Numerous factors contribute to roads influencing the UHIULI; however, effective mitigation strategies remain a challenge. This study examines the relationship between canopy cover percentage, normalized difference vegetation index, land use types, and three road typologies (local, regional, and state) with land surface temperature. This study is based on data from the city of Adelaide, Australia, using spatial analysis, and statistical modelling. The results reveal strong negative correlations between land surface temperature and both canopy cover percentage and normalized difference vegetation index. Additionally, land surface temperature tends to increase with road width. Among land use types, land surface temperature varies from highest to lowest in the order of parkland, industrial, residential, educational, medical, and commercial areas. Notably, the combined influence of the road typology and land use produces varying effects on land surface temperature. Canopy cover percentage and normalized difference vegetation index consistently serve as dominant cooling factors. The results highlight a complex interplay between built and natural environments, emphasizing the need for multi-factor analyses and a framework based on the local climate and the type of roads (local, regional, and state) to effectively evaluate UHIULI mitigation approaches. Urban heat islands (UHIs) present a growing environmental issue in swiftly urbanizing regions, where impermeable surfaces and a lack of vegetation increase local temperatures. This research analyzes the spatial distribution of urban heat islands in Zagreb, Croatia, utilizing remote sensing data, urban planning metrics, and spatial-statistical analysis. Composite rasters of land surface temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were generated from four cloud-free Landsat 9 images obtained in the summer of 2024. The data were consolidated into regulatory planning units through zonal statistics, facilitating the evaluation of the impact of built-up density and designated green space on surface temperatures. A composite UHI index was developed by combining normalized land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) measurements, while spatial clustering was examined with Local Moran’s I and Getis-Ord Gi*. The results validate spatial patterns of heat intensity, with high temperatures centered in densely built residential areas. This research addresses the gap in past UHI studies by providing a reproducible approach for detecting thermal stress zones, linking satellite data with spatial planning variables. The results support the development of localized climate adaptation methods and highlight the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban planning methodologies. Full article

The future of marine sustainability depends on public understanding and trust in the policy recommendations that emerge from scientific research. For common pool marine resource decisions made by the people who depend on these resources for their food, employment, and economic future, understanding the current status of these marine systems and change is essential to ensure these resources will persist into the future. As such, the informal learning infrastructure is essential to increasing marine science literacy in a changing world. This mixed-methods research study analyzed the distribution and accessibility of marine science education and research across Alaska’s five geographic regions. Using the PRISMA framework, we synthesized data from 198 institutions and analyzed peer-reviewed literature on marine ecosystems to identify geographic and thematic gaps in access to informal science learning and research focus. In parallel, we undertook geospatial analysis and resource availability to describe the distribution of resources, types of informal learning infrastructure present across the state, regional presence, and resources to support informal marine science learning opportunities. Findings from this multifactor research revealed a concentration of resources in urban hubs and a lack of consistent access to learning resources for rural and Indigenous communities. The configurative literature review of 9549 publications identified topical underrepresentation of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, as well as a lack of research on seabirds across all regions. Considered together, these results recommend targeted investments in rural engagement with marine science programming, culturally grounded partnerships, and research diversification. This review concludes that disparities in learning resource support and government-funded priorities in marine wildlife research have created conditions that undermine the local people’s participation in the sustainability of sensitive resources and are likely exacerbating declines driven by rapid change in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. This research addresses urban heat island intensification driven by urbanization using Dianchi Lake in Kunming, China, as a case study, aiming to quantitatively evaluate the spatial extent, intensity, and land cover sensitivity differences in the cooling effects of large urban water bodies across dry/wet seasons and complex urban landscapes (forest, cropland, and impervious surfaces) to provide a scientific basis for optimizing thermal environments in low-latitude plateau cities. Based on Landsat 8/9 satellite data from dry (January) and wet (May) seasons in 2020 and 2023 used for land surface temperature (LST) retrieval combined with land use data, buffer zone gradient analysis was adopted to quantify the spatial heterogeneity of key cooling indicators within 0–1500 m lakeshore buffers. The results demonstrated significant seasonal differences. The wet season showed a greater cooling extent (600 m) and higher intensity (6.0–6.6 °C) compared with the dry season (400 m; 2.4–3.9 °C). The land cover responses varied substantially, with cropland having the largest influence (600 m), followed by impervious surfaces (400 m), while forest exhibited a minimal effective cooling range (100 m) but localized warming anomalies at 200–400 m. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that impervious surfaces were the most sensitive to water-cooling, followed by cropland, whereas forest showed the lowest sensitivity. Full article

Physiological Stress Responses Associated with Microplastic Ingestion in the Benthic Flatfish Bothus podas

Bothus podas (wide-eyed flounder) is a benthic flatfish likely exposed to microplastic (MP) pollution. We investigated MP ingestion and associated physiological effects in wild B. podas collected from Mallorca (Balearic Islands), Spain. Markers of oxidative stress, detoxification, and immunity were quantified in intestinal, hepatic, and splenic tissues. MPs were observed in the gastrointestinal tracts of 87.5% of the 24 specimens analyzed, with an average of 3.8 ± 0.6 items per fish. Fiber-type MPs predominated in both the gastrointestinal tract (69.6%) and sediment samples (97%). Additionally, micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the majority of ingested MPs were composed of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester. Fish were categorized into low (<3 items) and high (≥3 items) MP groups based on the median number of plastic items found in the gastrointestinal tract to assess sublethal impacts. In the gut, high-MP fish exhibited significantly elevated activities of detoxification enzymes: ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (phase I) and glutathione s-transferase (phase II), along with increased antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and inflammatory myeloperoxidase. Gut catalase and malondialdehyde (MDA) were not significantly different between groups. In liver tissues, no biomarkers differed significantly with MP exposure. In the spleen, lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase activities were significantly higher in high-MP fish, while splenic MDA remained unchanged. These results indicate that gastrointestinal MP exposure triggers local oxidative stress responses and systemic immune activation in B. podas. Overall, ingestion of environmentally relevant MP levels elicited detoxification and inflammatory responses without significant increases in MDA, an indicator of oxidative damage, highlighting the physiological stress imposed by plastic pollution on benthic fish. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed long-standing vulnerabilities in island tourism economies such as Crete and Chios, including seasonality, overdependence on mass tourism, and limited innovation adoption. This study investigates how sustainable tourism, regional development, and innovation interconnect in these two cases. Drawing on structured questionnaires addressed to tourism stakeholders in Hersonissos (Crete) and Chios, we apply a comparative analysis through descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal a common interest in diversifying tourism offerings through digital transformation and alternative tourism models. Hersonissos demonstrates higher engagement with innovation-led strategies, while Chios reflects a cautious but growing inclination toward eco-tourism and cultural tourism initiatives. The study employs a comparative cross-sectional design based on structured questionnaires addressed to 71 tourism stakeholders in Hersonissos and Chios. Data were collected through purposive sampling that was completed in July 2023. As a practical outcome, we propose the Regional Innovation Index in Tourism—a composite tool designed to assess innovation readiness at the local level. This index enables policymakers to evaluate the strategic capacity of tourism regions and supports the formulation of long-term, place-based development strategies aligned with EU policy goals and the transition to a green economy.
