In recent years, the city of Naples has seen increasing attention focused on the mural dedicated to Diego Armando Maradona, located in the Spanish Quarter. Originally a spontaneous expression of street art and initially perceived by the local community as a simple artwork, the mural has gradually transformed into a powerful symbol of identity, becoming a true cultural icon of the city. This process has generated effects that transcend the artistic value of the artwork, contributing to the enhancement of the entire surrounding urban context and altering the social and economic dynamics of the quarter. By considering the Maradona Mural as the epicentre of a range of territorial and socio-economic effects, this paper aims to explore the issue of measuring the influence exerted by its presence on the market values of residential properties located in the Spanish Quarter of Naples. From this perspective, street art can be interpreted as a positive externality capable not only of fostering processes of urban regeneration and the redevelopment of formerly marginalised or degraded areas but also of influencing the dynamics of the local real estate market. Property values reflect not only the intrinsic characteristics of the properties but also the environmental and territorial attributes that contribute to the formation of market prices. From this perspective, properties can be considered as beneficiaries of externalities, whose economic value can be estimated through variations in house prices attributable to changes in environmental and territorial conditions. Cibotium barometz (L.) J.Sm., a medicinal fern, relies on three interconnected processes for in vitro propagation: spore germination, ordered gametophyte development, and successful initiation and early establishment of the sporophyte generation. However, during aseptic subculture, gametophytes frequently deviate from this developmental trajectory. The predominant abnormalities include filamentous arrest, thick fan-shaped blades, and irregular spatulate blades, all of which were associated with reduced archegonial maturation and subsequent sporophyte establishment. In this study, developmental time-course observation, paraffin-section histology, and medium-regulation experiments were integrated to establish a diagnosis–recovery–initiation framework for Cibotium barometz gametophytes. Spore germination and gametophyte development were divided into eight practical checkpoints: spore imbibition, spore-wall rupture, rhizoid emergence, rhizoid elongation, filamentous prothallus, lamellar prothallus, cordate gametophyte, and sporophyte formation. The ontogeny of archegonia was delineated into six histological stages, ranging from the initial-cell stage to the pre-fertilization stage. Based on an integrative assessment of population appearance, individual morphology, and anatomical sections, abnormal gametophytes were classified into three diagnostic categories. Filamentous arrest manifested as wool-like or thread-like growth patterns, featuring persistent chain-like cellular organization and failure to develop a two-dimensional blade. Thick fan-shaped blades showed pronounced enlargement and thickening; section images revealed narrow, densely packed cells, accumulation of storage compounds, and localized wall thickening, a pattern consistent with, but not sufficient to demonstrate, a preferential shift toward vegetative proliferation. Irregular spatulate blades were narrow and asymmetric and showed morphological and histological features suggestive of disrupted tissue polarity. Although archegonial initial cells or primordium-like structures were intermittently detected, they infrequently advanced to mature archegonia. Medium treatment significantly affected arrest rate, hypertrophy rate, sporophyte initiation, and mean young-sporophyte height (p < 0.001). Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with IAA, 6-BA, and activated carbon was associated with the highest arrest rate, whereas full-strength MS medium was associated with the most pronounced hypertrophy. Among hormone-free subculture treatments, 1/2 MS + activated carbon gave the highest sporophyte initiation rate (71.45% ± 9.16%); the same formula also performed well in primary hormone-free cultures (70.54% ± 9.07%). Correlation analysis showed a strong positive association between sporophyte initiation rate and mean young-sporophyte height (r = 0.935, p < 0.001), while arrest and hypertrophy were negatively associated with sporophyte initiation. These results support evaluating in vitro propagation using quantified developmental outcomes—arrest rate, hypertrophy rate, sporophyte initiation rate, and mean young-sporophyte height—rather than biomass alone. Under the tested conditions, hormone-free 1/2 MS + activated carbon was associated with the most favorable recovery outcomes; the underlying mechanisms require validation by quantitative histology, gene-expression analysis, endogenous-hormone profiling, and direct measurement of compounds adsorbed by activated carbon. Wool is often regarded as a low-value by-product of Alpine sheep farming, despite its potential to convey the ecosystem services (ESs) generated by these systems. This study examines how awareness and perception of these services are associated with consumer attitudes towards locally produced wool in the Lanzo Valleys in Northwestern Italy. A convenience sample of 400 adults familiar with the study area completed an online questionnaire. Principal Component Analysis identified two orientations towards wool products—Sustainability Orientation and Product-Value Orientation—which together explained 69.33% of the variance. A TwoStep Cluster Analysis based on the component scores identified four profiles within the study sample: Sustainability-sensitive (22%), Disinterested (14.25%), Eco-aesthetic (36%), and Aesthetically aware (27.75%). Sustainability-oriented respondents attributed greater importance to ES related to biodiversity, native-breed conservation and animal welfare, whereas aesthetic and experiential attributes represented an additional, distinct dimension of product evaluation. Residence status was not significantly associated with cluster membership. Given the non-probabilistic sampling design, these profiles should be interpreted as exploratory attitudinal patterns. The findings may inform differentiated communication and wool-valorisation strategies linking environmental, cultural, aesthetic and functional values. Full article

Heritage tourism has become an important driver of tourism development, particularly in Asia, where countries actively promote national and cultural identities to attract visitors. Although individual studies have examined heritage identity in relation to tourism, existing reviews have not systematically synthesised the theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, and empirical evidence on how tangible and intangible heritage identities are utilised as tourism development resources across South and Southeast Asia. Accordingly, this systematic review addresses three questions: (i) how research on heritage identity in heritage tourism has evolved in South and Southeast Asia, including its publication trends, theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches; (ii) which forms of tangible and intangible heritage identity are most utilised in South and Southeast Asia; and (iii) what conceptual and practical challenges and future research directions emerge from the literature. This study presents a systematic literature review with narrative synthesis of 44 publications to analyze how tangible and intangible heritage identities are used to promote heritage tourism in the region. The findings indicate that most studies focus on tangible heritage such as monuments, archaeological sites and colonial architecture, while intangible heritage, including cultural festivals and living traditions, remains comparatively underrepresented. The review further shows that heritage identity plays a significant role in strengthening national identity, enhancing visitor experiences and supporting local economic development across South and Southeast Asia. At the same time, several challenges remain, including the underutilisation of heritage resources, limited recognition of intangible heritage and the need to improve visitor management and sustainable tourism practices. The study concludes that Asian countries have significant untapped potential to further integrate heritage identity into tourism strategies, particularly through more innovative uses of intangible cultural heritage and improved heritage governance and management. Black tourism, a specific type of interest tourism, is defined as traveling to places that are associated with death, tragedy, and history as a form of suffering. In India, black tourism includes memorials, battlefields, and sites of socio-political conflict reflecting its complex history. The purpose of this study was to examine the growth and development of black tourism in India, focusing specifically on destinations related to historical tragedy and memory. The study uses a mixed-methods approach with primary data from structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews at black tourism destinations in India, supported by secondary data. The study finds that tourists at India’s black tourism sites seek historical learning and emotional engagement, while highlighting challenges like infrastructure issues and limited local participation. Major challenges facing black tourism in India are inadequacy of infrastructure; limited interpretation of the site; ethical concerns; and lack of participation from the local population. The study found that preserving authenticity, respecting locals, and incorporating cultural rituals are essential for tourism. The study concluded that planned and sustainable development of black tourism in India will enhance historical awareness and socio-cultural understanding. Full article

This study investigates the relationship between cultural compliance and late dry-season vegetation dynamics in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia, by analysing a decade of August Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data (2016–2025) and Cultural Compliance Scores (CCS) across three sites. Underpinned by lende ura, a local customary philosophy conceptualising the forest as a ‘rain bridge’ that sustains water availability, this cultural framework fosters community commitment to forest conservation. Empirically, this contrast is evident where Delo, actively practising this philosophy, maintained a high mean NDVI (0.90) with a markedly low Coefficient of Variation (CV: 1.96%), whereas Mangga Nippi and Lua Koba exhibited lower mean NDVI (0.58 and 0.66) and higher variability (CV: 26.54% and 11.06%), indicating biocultural divergence. Consequently, this erosion of traditional practices is associated with changes in vegetation and observed declines in hydrological functions, making water increasingly difficult to access and heightening economic vulnerability within an environmental poverty trap. These findings indicate that late dry-season vegetation stability in this dryland setting is closely associated with the strength of customary governance, suggesting that traditional institutions may complement the formal conservation of natural habitats. By pairing a CCS with a decade of NDVI variability, this study provides a replicable framework and testable hypotheses for examining biocultural dynamics in comparable seasonally dry tropical landscapes. This study investigates the atmospheric corrosion behavior of high-lead bronze alloys within a simulated aggressive environment characterized by high humidity, acidity, chlorides, oxygen, and CO2. The evolution of surface morphology and corrosion products was systematically monitored using colorimetric analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Results indicate that the initial patina primarily comprised cuprite (Cu2O) and cassiterite (SnO2), which are predominantly benign phases. During the early corrosion stage, lead oxidation and carbonation prevailed, generating abundant bright-white cerussite. Subsequently, as copper-driven corrosion became dominant, these white deposits diminished and were progressively replaced by characteristic green “bronze disease”, identified as atacamite (Cu2(OH)3Cl). The findings reveal that preferential lead corrosion is likely to induce localized pitting, thereby accelerating degradation of the copper substrate. Consequently, higher lead content may reduce the overall corrosion resistance of bronze artifacts under these specific conditions. These results offer experimental insights into atmospheric corrosion mechanisms and inform the development of evidence-based conservation strategies for bronze cultural heritage. Full article

The core predicament of energy transition lies not in the availability of clean technologies, but in whether an economy possesses the institutional capacity and social foundation to systematically regulate its carbon-energy metabolic processes. Drawing upon co-evolutionary theory from evolutionary economics, this paper constructs a composite indicator of Low-Carbon Green Energy Eco-Co-evolution (LCEE) encompassing three functional dimensions: efficiency advancement, kinetic energy replacement, and boundary adherence. Concurrently, by integrating innovation ecosystem theory with inclusive development theory, we propose the concept of “Inclusive Potential of Regional Innovation Ecosystems” (IEP), characterizing the systemic potential for transforming innovation outcomes into social welfare across four dimensions: Knowledge Matrix Abundance (KMF), Cultural Capillary Permeation (CCP), Technological Community Succession (TCS), and Social Root Nourishment (SRN). Taking China’s 2016 intellectual property (IP) powerhouse construction pilot as the institutional prototype of Industrial Intellectual Property Upgrading Reform (IPR), we incorporate IPR, IEP, and LCEE into a unified causal analytical framework, proposing a testable transmission logic of ‘institutional supply → ecological development → co-evolutionary synergy. Using panel data from 30 Chinese provincial-level administrative regions over 2010–2022, we employ a Spatial Durbin Difference-in-Differences (SDM-DID) model to identify the direct and spatial spillover effects of IPR on LCEE, and embed a Double Machine Learning (DML) framework to test the mediating mechanism of IEP while controlling for high-dimensional nonlinear interference. The findings reveal that IPR exerts a significant and robust direct promoting effect on LCEE, generating positive spatial spillovers to neighboring regions through the public disclosure of patent information. IEP significantly promotes local LCEE, yet its spatial spillover lacks statistical support due to structural conflicts in inter-dimensional transmission attributes. IEP plays a significant partial mediating role between IPR and LCEE, with the indirect effect accounting for over one-third of the total effect, a finding robust to alternative machine learning algorithms, sample split adjustments, and exclusion of contemporaneous competing policies. Sub-path tests reveal that KMF bears the strongest mediating efficacy, serving as the primary transmission channel, while CCP exhibits full mediation—the institutional effect on LCEE in the cultural dimension depends almost entirely on the mediating transformation through the public cultural service system. Heterogeneity analysis further demonstrates full mediation in the Low-Carbon Green Energy Eco-Kinetic Replacement (KER) dimension, indicating that the institutional catalytic effect on clean energy substitution must be realized through IEP transformation. This paper provides empirical evidence for the proposed causal pathway through which institutional public goods indirectly enhance the synergistic quality of carbon-energy transition via the inclusive potential of innovation ecosystems, providing theoretical foundations and policy implications that, while grounded in China’s institutional context, may offer valuable reference points for emerging market economies facing similar dual pressures of technological constraints and green transition. Destinations increasingly shift from promotional branding toward holistic and inclusive identity strategies, where cultural heritage operates as both an anchor of local distinctiveness and a catalyst for creative place-making. This study presents a mixed-methods Triple Bottom Line (TBL) assessment of four Greek cultural heritage institutions, a regional theatre, a municipal gallery, a university-affiliated foundation, and a regional film festival, to examine how governance structures, resource availability, and organisational capacity shape environmental, social, and economic sustainability performance. Through document analysis and semi-structured interviews, the research identifies eleven recurring thematic variables across the TBL dimensions and systematically compares their implementation across distinct governance models. Findings show that social sustainability, particularly accessibility, education, and community engagement, constitutes a structurally universal baseline across all institutions, regardless of governance type or resource level. In contrast, environmental and economic performance diverge sharply according to governance model, building ownership, and access to capital. As cultural institutions function as experiential landmarks within cultural and creative tourism, their inclusive practices enhance community wellbeing while co-producing destination identity as socially responsible and culturally authentic. The study concludes with targeted policy recommendations on reporting standards, capacity building, and structural constraints, offering transferable insights for creative place-making and sustainable destination branding in Greece and other Mediterranean contexts. Living terraced cultural landscapes (LTCLs) bind together agricultural heritage, ecological function, and local culture. International instruments such as the Guidance and Toolkit for Impact Assessments, Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0, and Preparing World Heritage Nominations guide heritage protection, but none integrates all four dimensions, and no LTCL-specific framework exists to diagnose a candidate site before formal nomination. Following PRISMA 2020, this review synthesized 61 peer-reviewed studies from the Web of Science Core Collection (2012–2026; screening Cohen’s κ = 0.82). Keyword co-occurrence mapping in VOSviewer, combined with manual thematic coding, produced six clusters that we consolidated into four analytical dimensions: heritage value, landscape integrity, tourism–heritage balance, and governance and protection. Reading across these dimensions revealed three gaps—no tool integrates all four in an operable form, the balance between tourism and protection lacks an explicit evaluative mechanism, and socioeconomic stressors such as rural labor out-migration fall outside official criteria—together pointing to a fourth, procedural gap: the absence of pre-nomination diagnosis. On this basis we propose IAF-LTCL, a preliminary conceptual framework of four dimensions and 22 elements, designed so that strength in one dimension does not offset weakness in another. The framework is not yet empirically validated; we present it as a structured starting point that heritage managers can use for pre-nomination self-assessment, pending future field validation. Empirical evidence explaining how cultural resources are translated into sustainable community outcomes through Dynamic Capabilities and Cultural Innovation Ability also remains limited. This study examines how Cultural Capital and Dynamic Capabilities contribute to community sustainability through Cultural Innovation Ability in Buyei Tie-dyeing communities in Guizhou Province, China. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, 503 valid questionnaires were analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM), complemented by semi-structured interviews and a focus group discussion. The empirical results demonstrate that Dynamic Capabilities exert a substantial direct effect on Local Community Sustainability (β = 0.429, p < 0.001), while Cultural Capital emerges as a critical determinant of Cultural Innovation Ability (β = 0.468, p < 0.001). Cultural Innovation Ability partially mediates the relationships of Dynamic Capabilities and Cultural Capital with Local Community Sustainability. The study focuses on respondents’ perceptions of community-level processes within this evolving heritage context rather than directly examining how heritage meanings are negotiated, reproduced, or transformed among different actors. The structural model explains 50.1% of the variance in Local Community Sustainability, indicating moderate explanatory power. The findings suggest that Cultural Capital alone may be insufficient to generate stronger sustainability outcomes unless communities can mobilize and transform it under changing conditions. Cultural innovation serves as a key mechanism linking cultural resources to community sustainability. The study contributes to the literature by extending Dynamic Capability Theory to community-based heritage settings and by identifying Cultural Innovation Ability as an important mechanism linking cultural resources to sustainable community development. Tourism is a complex economic activity all over the world shaped by distinct local resources: culture, nature, industrial heritage, urban ambiance, place-based uniqueness, and geographical accessibility. The simultaneous governance and management of economic growth motives, preservation of the cultural heritage base, and respect for nature and ecological quality calls for an evidence-based and multi-faceted policy analysis that seeks to achieve sustainable development among conflicting policy objectives in tourist areas. The present paper seeks to explore the feasibility of a sustainable balance for various heterogeneous cultural heritage areas in Europe (‘urban pilot regions’), with particular attention to sustainable local development characterized by circular economic objectives and an ecological balance strategy based on the principle of stakeholders’ co-creation. The paper addresses the knowledge gap between generic policy aims and site-specific views of actors or visitors. To that end, an extensive survey experiment was administered in the urban regions concerned, in which a wide range of relevant management issues/questions related to environmental preferences and perceptions were posed to stakeholders and visitors. The data were analyzed by means of a novel respondent-oriented multivariate statistical tool, viz. Generalized Q-Analysis, which is suitable for handling big databases with many respondents. The paper shows that the application of Generalized Q-Analysis to common survey data enriches the results from the application of a conventional Q-Analysis. Furthermore, the study also highlights that, based on the views expressed by the surveyed visitors, the tourist areas concerned are quite different from each other in attracting specific classes of visitors. Therefore, functional specialization in the tourist sector seems to be an important anchor point for effective governance of urban tourism, not only in Europe, but also elsewhere in the world. The search and discovery of underwater shipwreck sites represent the most arduous and critical phases of underwater archaeology. Wooden shipwrecks, in particular, are characterized by low acoustic impedance contrast and weak magnetic anomalies, coupled with their limited physical dimensions. Consequently, they predominantly exist as shallow-buried, discontinuous small targets scattered within confined areas, making their detection exceptionally challenging. Furthermore, the complexity of the submarine environment—including rugged topography, turbid water columns, and strong currents—poses formidable obstacles to the effective detection of these archaeological remains. Single geophysical methods are often limited by insufficient imaging resolution, interpretation ambiguity, and geological noise, making precise localization and characterization difficult. Focusing on the Nan’ao I Ming Dynasty shipwreck located in waters approximately 24 m deep off the coast of Nan’ao, Guangdong Province, China, this study proposes and validates an “acoustic-magnetic” multi-source data integration detection method. This approach systematically integrates high-resolution multibeam echo sounding (MBES), side-scan sonar (SSS), sub-bottom profiling (SBP), and marine magnetic data to establish a comprehensive framework for identification and integration analysis. The results indicate that the MBES bathymetric data reveal a regular, elongated structure oriented north–south (approximately 34 m × 12 m), closely matching the main hull and deck configuration. The SSS imagery exhibited high backscatter intensity and parallel linear textures, effectively delineating the hard shipwreck structure and the associated rigid protective frame employed for in situ preservation. SBP data confirmed the semi-buried state of the shipwreck (burial depth of approximately 0.6 m). Spatial variations in sediment thickness around the site suggested ongoing modification by strong hydrodynamic processes. Marine magnetic surveys identified localized negative anomalies (−210 nT relative to the ambient magnetic field), contrasting sharply with the positive anomalies of the surrounding natural reefs, thereby indicating an artificial ferromagnetic source. The spatial registration and feature superposition of multi-source data facilitated the characterization of the shipwreck, demonstrating its potential to mitigate environmental interference and enhance detection reliability in this complex environment. Using the Nan’ao I shipwreck site as a case study, this study provides a detailed characterization of the site’s 3D morphology, burial state, and physical properties. The proposed methodology offers a practical and robust technical solution for underwater shipwreck archaeology in complex nearshore environments, providing significant implications for proactive discovery, efficient investigation, and protection of underwater cultural heritage (UCH). As an expression of cultural identity, food is rooted in social transformation and, in the area of the Pearl River Delta, the cuisines of Macau and Hong Kong have been shaped by global interactions. Despite a geographical adjacency, both Special Administrative Regions (SARs) display unique foodways. While typical Macanese cuisine integrates not only Portuguese and Chinese but also African and Indian fusions, the Cantonese gastronomy of Hong Kong is heavily based on street food culture and the hybridity of cha chaan teng dishes. This encyclopedia entry looks at local food traditions from colonial culinary practice to globalized consumption. It illustrates a continuous adaptiveness in the wake of socioeconomic change, as well as the resilience needed for preserving heritage. Full article

Translate, Search, or Answer: Cost-Aware Cross-Lingual Retrieval for Kazakh Small Language Models

Small Language Models (SLMs) enable efficient deployment, but their limited parameter count constrains factual knowledge, particularly in low-resource languages like Kazakh. Integrating live web search can address this limitation, though its effectiveness is difficult to measure due to sparse in-language web indices and answer leakage during benchmarking. In this study, we systematically compare zero-shot parametric generation, in-language retrieval, and cross-lingual (translate-then-retrieve) web search using three 4B-parameter SLMs in both reasoning and non-reasoning modes. To evaluate factuality without search-engine leakage, we introduce machine-translated Kazakh versions of the FreshQA and DefAn benchmarks, and use GPQA as a Google-proof adversarial control. We also assess robustness across three prompt complexities, from simple JSON constraints to adversarial warnings that instruct the model to treat potentially unreliable context with caution. Finally, we propose a training-free, self-aware router that uses majority voting over repeated self-verification decisions to determine when to answer parametrically, when to search the web, and when to escalate to a more capable cloud model. Our results show that cross-lingual retrieval substantially outperforms in-language search on global factuality tasks, nearly doubling accuracy on FreshQA, while direct in-language search remains preferable for localized cultural queries. The choice of retrieval language depends on the task and does not always favor English. Additionally, cross-lingual retrieval is not consistently superior, because the best option depends on where relevant information is indexed. Pareto analysis indicates that cross-lingual search is on or near the optimal accuracy–latency frontier, adding minimal overhead compared to direct search. The router identifies which query types warrant retrieval, and as a system it tracks or exceeds always-search accuracy while issuing fewer searches and approaching the always-cloud ceiling at a fraction of its cost; per-query discrimination within a task family is weaker, which we quantify explicitly. Overall, this work offers a framework for optimizing and accurately measuring cross-lingual RAG pipelines in low-resource settings. Full article
