This study investigates the determinants of turnover intention among real estate sales professionals in Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), two markets that represent contrasting economic realities within the MENA region. Drawing on Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, and March and Simon’s Push-Pull Model, this study adopts a multidimensional framework to assess the effects of compensation, job stress, career growth opportunities, and work–life balance on employee retention. A quantitative method was employed using a structured questionnaire administered to 832 respondents (425 in the UAE and 407 in Lebanon), and data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The results reveal that job stress is the most influential predictor of turnover intention, particularly in Lebanon, followed by work–life balance, compensation, and career growth opportunities. These findings underscore the importance of psychological well-being and structural incentives in talent retention. By offering empirical evidence from an underexplored regional labor market, the study contributes to the global turnover discourse and provides comparative insights into the labor dynamics of both a crisis-prone and a high-growth economy. The results carry significant practical implications for HR managers, firm owners, and policymakers, highlighting the necessity of adopting holistic and context-sensitive retention strategies that extend beyond financial rewards to include flexible work arrangements, career development frameworks, and supportive workplace cultures. Artificial intelligence (AI), a transformative force, has revolutionised various aspects of human life and business operations. This has led to a drastic mutation of the career landscape, embedded with vast opportunities as well as challenges, particularly concerning career sustainability (CS). Despite myriad studies on CS, the paradoxical interplay of AI and CS remains underexplored, particularly for expatriates (expats). To address the aforementioned gap, our study incorporates an affordance perspective (AFP), positioning AI as an object and CS as a user context. Specifically, this study investigates whether AI facilitates the orchestration of an enhanced sustainable career within the boundary conditions of knowledge sharing (KS), encompassing both tacit and explicit knowledge pertinent to AI, cultivated through managerial initiatives and employee-driven activities. The study conducted a quantitative survey among 490 expats working in AI-integrated environments in China. The results reveal a curvilinear (U-shaped) relationship between AI and CS, where AI affordance at a moderate level enhances career adaptability and skill development. However, digital affordances become complex beyond a certain threshold, creating several career concerns, such as job insecurity and role ambiguity. Furthermore, the moderating effect of tacit and explicit KS mitigates numerous career disruptions while fostering long-term career growth. The study framed AI as both a tool and a collaborator that illuminates the importance of AI–human intelligence (AI–HI) synergy and knowledge augmentation in navigating digital transitions. In an increasingly technologized and automated world, workplace safety and health remain a major global challenge. After decades of regulatory frameworks and substantial technical and organizational advances, the expanding interaction between humans and machines and the growing complexity of work systems are gaining importance. In parallel, the digitalization of Industry 4.0/5.0 is generating unprecedented volumes of safety-relevant data and new opportunities to move from reactive analysis to proactive, data-driven prevention. This review maps how artificial intelligence (AI), with a specific focus on natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs), is being applied to occupational risk prevention across sectors. A structured search of the Web of Science Core Collection (2013–October 2025), combined OSH-related terms with AI, NLP and LLM terms. After screening and full-text assessment, 123 studies were discussed. Early work relied on text mining and traditional machine learning to classify accident types and causes, extract risk factors and support incident analysis from free-text narratives. More recent contributions use deep learning to predict injury severity, potential serious injuries and fatalities (PSIF) and field risk control program (FRCP) levels and to fuse textual data with process, environmental and sensor information in multi-source risk models. The latest wave of studies deploys LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation and vision–language architectures to generate task-specific safety guidance, support accident investigation, map occupations and job tasks and monitor personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance. Together, these developments show that AI-, NLP- and LLM-based systems can exploit unstructured OSH information to provide more granular, timely and predictive safety insights. However, the field is still constrained by data quality and bias, limited external validation, opacity, hallucinations and emerging regulatory and ethical requirements. In conclusion, this review positions AI and LLMs as tools to support human decision-making in OSH and outlines a research agenda centered on high-quality datasets and rigorous evaluation of fairness, robustness, explainability and governance. Ecosystem restoration is increasingly recognised as part of the global solution for building a resilient, low-emissions economy, with its associated employment opportunities helping to provide political legitimacy for government investment. In Aotearoa New Zealand, however, little is known about the employment effects of government-funded ecosystem restoration initiatives. This study addresses that gap by analysing project-level data from 359 “Jobs for Nature” projects to examine how funding levels and contextual factors influence direct employment outcomes. Multiple regression analyses build on one-way ANOVA tests to quantify the contribution of funding and contextual factors to employment outcomes and to assess their differential impacts across various settings (regions, agencies, project types, and durations). The analysis reveals that while funding is the primary driver of employment—with each additional NZD 100,000 creating approximately 0.7 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs—contextual factors call for a more dynamic, targeted policy approach to maximise marginal employment returns. Three key policy implications are accordingly drawn: (1) direct more funding to regions with higher socio-economic deprivation; (2) preferentially support projects of medium-term duration; and (3) evaluate and replicate the practices of high-performing funding agencies. This study examines the determinants of talent retention in the hotel sector of Extremadura, a peripheral European region facing depopulation, labour scarcity and structural limitations that threaten the sustainability of its human capital base. Grounded in the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) theory, the research analyses how a set of key labour resources, specifically professional training, organisational trust, job satisfaction and sustainability commitment, influence employees’ intention to remain in their organisations. These resources are conceptualised as organisational and motivational mechanisms that enhance employees’ capacity to cope with job demands and reinforce their attachment to the organisation. A quantitative survey was conducted with hotel-sector employees in Extremadura; 255 questionnaires were validated, and the proposed structural model was tested using SEM. The findings show that organisational trust is the strongest predictor of retention, followed by professional training and sustainability commitment, while job satisfaction also exerts a significant, though more moderate, effect. These results indicate that enhancing fairness perceptions, strengthening continuous training pathways and integrating sustainability-oriented values are essential strategies for retaining qualified personnel in territories with limited external opportunities. Rather than measuring human capital sustainability directly, the study shows that talent retention operates as a central empirical mechanism through which the sustainability of human capital can be supported in peripheral tourism economies. It concludes by highlighting the need for managerial practices that support transparent leadership, structured professional development and participatory sustainability initiatives, and encourages future research to incorporate longitudinal designs and direct measures of human capital sustainability. Decisions to migrate are based on individual and family assessments of risk and opportunity, shaped by economic conditions, risks and experiences of violence, resources, and networks, which interact with personal factors and opportunity. During the journey, migrating people may encounter threats to their safety and wellbeing from both human and natural hazards. This study drew on survey data from 305 Mexican and Central American participants who migrated into the US between 2013 and 2022 alone or with families and children. Respondents provided demographic data and answered questions about stressors that prompted their migration, dangerous experiences encountered on their journey, sources of support, and what they wished they had known. Factors that influenced migration included economic stressors such as loss of job and poverty, witnessing or experiencing interpersonal violence or state violence such as kidnapping or threats to self or family, and environmental factors such as natural disasters. Approximately a third of participants traveled with their children, parents or siblings. Younger migrants and migrating people traveling with children reported significantly higher likelihood of encountering dangers during migration. Implications for supporting migrating children and families who have encountered violence and trauma are discussed, as well as limitations of the research. Full article

Purposes: Teacher turnover has especially negative effects on schools and students when experienced and capable teachers leave. This loss is significant when those teachers also serve as mentors to their less experienced colleagues. This study aimed to advance understanding about how school leaders can positively influence the retention of their school’s teacher mentors. Methodology: The framework for the study reflects a longstanding line of research on successful leadership. Using a cross-sectional research design, evidence was provided by responses to the mentor survey component of a larger four-year study examining the effects on retention decisions of a national induction programme for early-career teachers and their mentors in England. Structural equation modelling was employed to test the direct and indirect effects of school leadership and selected school conditions on mentors’ self-efficacy, well-being and job satisfaction, and ultimately retention decisions. Findings: Developing and retaining teacher mentors was associated with a suite of leadership practices which encourage collaborative cultures, provide coherent high-quality learning opportunities, and ensure what they perceive to be manageable workloads. These organizational conditions nurture the job satisfaction and self-efficacy of experienced teachers enhancing their sense of well-being at work. Implications: Results suggest four sets of guidelines for senior school leaders. Full article

Objectives: The crime rate in Trinidad and Tobago has increased over the last few years. It is important to understand the impact of rising societal crime on university workplace productivity in order to make meaningful recommendations to mitigate the negative effects of crime. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews online via Zoom and face-to-face with both academic and non-academic staff from a university located in Trinidad and Tobago in April 2025. We employed purposive sampling and topics explored included participants’ views on crime, the effect of crime on workplace productivity, the effect of crime on workplace concentration, the effect of crime on participants’ mental health, concerns about safety at the workplace, and desired changes or suggestions to ensure improved safety at the workplace. Data were manually analyzed, and we employed thematic analysis to understand the participants’ data. Results: Analysis included data from 10 participants. Participants represented both academic and non-academic staff, with varied ethnic backgrounds, age range, and were both from Mount Hope and the main campus. Seven of the participants believed that their work productivity had been negatively affected by the crime situation. All the participants agreed that the crime situation was out of control; two of the participants claimed to have been victims of crime. Five of the participants believed they had experienced depressive symptoms, while six participants claimed to have experienced poor concentration on the job. Five participants expressed genuine concerns that something terrible could happen to them within their workplace premises. In order to improve security at the workplace, seven of the participants suggested the employment of more security personnel, while six participants highlighted the need for more surveillance and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. Participants identified four major categories or themes: views on crime and its effects on individuals; effects of crime on workplace productivity; effects of crime on mental well-being; and suggestions and opportunities to improve security at the workplace. Conclusions: From this study, it can be inferred that the majority of the participants were negatively affected by the climate of crime in the country. A comprehensive risk assessment would identify potential risks and vulnerabilities faced by staff, while enhanced surveillance measures and the promotion of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can support those impacted. Staff should also be trained to respond effectively to potential threats. Full article

The construction sector is traditionally known for a harsh working culture characterized by uncertainty, frequent crises, and long working hours, which increase stress among employees at all organizational levels. The primary objective of the present research is to examine the extent to which workplace stress factors grouped under organisational/interpersonal, task and physical stressor categories influence professionals within the construction industry. A cross-sectional online survey of 185 construction professionals in Turkey was conducted between October 2024 and February 2025. Findings reveal that the task stressors category associated with increased workload exerts the most significant adverse effect on employees, while organisational/interpersonal stressors are the least impactful. The analysis also shows significant variations in perceptions across different demographic and workplace contexts. An overwhelming majority of significant differences between male and female employees occur within the “Organizational/Interpersonal Stressors”, with six out of the eight significant factors falling under this category. In particular, the most pronounced gender-based differences are observed in specific areas such as gender and age discrimination in promotion and development opportunities at work, fear of failure at the job/job insecurity and insufficient encouragement/support from managers. In addition, young professionals and employees of medium sized firms are found to be more severely influenced by task stressors. By highlighting the differing perceptions of stress factors among employees based on their demographic profiles, these findings provide insights for managers in formulating effective organizational policies. Establishing goals about streamlining tasks, reviewing hiring policies to reduce workloads, providing guidance and training for employees’ task prioritization skills, and implementing workload redistribution strategies are some of the strategies that may be considered by organisations in the construction industry. Even though many nations invest heavily in education to boost economic growth and development, evidence continues to show that university graduates struggle to find employment and eke out a living, obscuring our understanding of the true value of education. Comprehending the experiences of university graduates can assist in determining the support needed for their personal and economic growth. However, research in Zimbabwe on the experiences of graduates after university education is limited. This study explores the experiences of 14 university graduates, drawn from one university in Zimbabwe, who were in their fifth year after graduating. Data were generated from semi-structured interviews and analysed through the lens of credentialism theory. Findings revealed a significant discrepancy between education and employment wherein the value of education is being re-evaluated by people, with many questioning the assumption that higher education guarantees job opportunities. The disconnect highlights the need for policymakers to reassess the way education is delivered and aligned with labour market needs. The study proposes that universities should draw insights from industry leaders when crafting their curriculum and determining enrolment figures. The research extends scholarship on the interplay between education and employment, thereby guiding educational policy formulation in developing countries. Full article

The ship recycling industry in Bangladesh has transformed from informal, beaching-based operations into a globally significant sector, representing over 45% of global recycling tonnage and providing essential raw materials and employment opportunities. This study adopts a mixed-methods design, combining secondary data analysis (2014–2024 gross tonnage records), over 500 stakeholder interviews, and ARIMA-based scenario forecasting up to 2050. The findings indicate that the sector contributes approximately USD 2.1 billion annually to the national economy and supports more than 250,000 direct and indirect jobs. Despite its economic significance, major compliance gaps persist with the Hong Kong International Convention (HKC): only about 52% of yards are certified or in the process of certification. Workplace accident rates remain roughly 30% higher than regional averages, while environmental assessments reveal elevated heavy metal concentrations in soil and water, underscoring weak regulatory enforcement and environmental management. Comparative analysis shows that India has successfully modernized over 120 HKC-compliant yards through targeted policy and financial incentives, whereas Pakistan is rapidly upgrading its Gadani facilities through major investment programs. Forecasting results identify three trajectories: a baseline of ~2.7 million GT annually to 2050, an optimistic expansion to ~5 million GT with green reforms, and a pessimistic decline below 2 million GT if progress stagnates. To ensure sustainable advancement, five strategic policy pillars are proposed, offering an evidence-based roadmap for Bangladesh to achieve safe, environmentally sound, and globally competitive ship recycling. Local agri-food markets are a key link in the sustainability and resilience of rural communities, as they merge producers and consumers, create jobs and ensure food security. This paper analyzes the state and perspectives of the development of local markets in rural regions of Russia, relying on demographic, economic, structural and innovation indicators. The results show marked regional differences: in urbanized areas the share of the rural population is low and markets are weak, while in Siberia and the Far East, local markets remain vital, albeit under pressure from depopulation. Structural shifts in favor of plant production, along with worsening price parity, indicate reduced profitability of small producers, but also open opportunities for diversification through processing and branding. Analysis of production concentration shows that sectors with more dispersed production (vegetables, milk) enable greater flexibility and resilience of local markets. Highly concentrated sectors remain vulnerable to market shocks. The findings confirm that local markets can be not only guardians of tradition, but also drivers of modernization and growth. The work thereby makes an empirical contribution to the understanding of the sustainability of rural markets and shows that, with targeted policies that link demographic stability, economic incentives, digital tools and ecological practices, local markets can become a pillar of sustainable development and a significant instrument for strengthening the resilience of the agri-food sector in Russia and beyond. Methodologically, the article applies a mixed approach: (i) quantitative analysis of several sets of statistical data (Rosstat, supplementary FAO/OECD/Eurostat) through descriptive indicators and indices (incl. input/output price parity), as well as cluster typology of regions; and (ii) qualitative mapping of findings to contemporary policies and practices. This framework allows structural trends to be directly linked to implications for local food markets. Full article

However, adoption remains limited due to high capital costs, technical complexity, and market competition from photovoltaic (PV) systems. This review systematically synthesises recent literature on CSP and applies a hybrid SWOT–Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to quantitatively evaluate key internal and external factors influencing CSP deployment. The analysis identifies major strengths such as high-capacity factors and grid stability enabled by thermal storage, as well as weaknesses including high initial investment and site requirements. Opportunities stem from technological innovation, supportive policy frameworks, and potential for local job creation, while threats include rapid cost reductions in PV systems, water scarcity, and market and regulatory uncertainties. The integrated SWOT–AHP approach provides a robust decision-making framework and strategic insights for stakeholders seeking to promote CSP technology in diverse market contexts. The findings underscore the importance of tailored policy support and targeted investment to overcome barriers and realise CSP’s full potential within the renewable energy landscape. Full article

This article presents the findings of a literature review and an empirical bibliometric analysis aimed at identifying green research perspectives within the energy sector of the Visegrád Group countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia). These perspectives reflect key scientific directions related to Sustainable Development (SD), environmental protection, and social responsibility. In this context, the theoretical principles of SD are translated into practical strategies, innovations, and solutions that support long-term economic growth while respecting ecological limits and social needs. Such themes frequently appear as dominant keywords in academic publications, underscoring their growing importance in energy research. The study pursued two main and complementary research objectives. The first was to identify green research perspectives prevalent within the energy sector of the Visegrád region. The second was to determine whether, and how, existing scientific publications address the topic of green jobs in this specific regional and sectoral context. The analysis led to the classification of five thematic categories: (1) green economy and finance, (2) green policies and strategies, (3) green energy and its sources, (4) green technology, and (5) green transport. These areas, when examined collectively, reveal important synergies that could support the creation of green jobs. Among the publications analyzed, green energy emerged as the most frequently addressed topic. However, the study found a lack of direct focus on green jobs, indicating that this subject—arising from the intersection of several research areas—represents a promising direction for future studies. In addition to these five categories, the study also identified several emerging green research directions within the Visegrád energy sector. These include: the development of green hydrogen technologies, the greening of the gas sector, the integration of prosumers into energy systems, the societal and political acceptance of nuclear energy, the role of green public transport in accelerating the energy transition, and the formulation of just transition policies. These themes highlight both technological opportunities and socio-political challenges that must be addressed to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive green transformation in the region. Full article

Job satisfaction plays a critical role in shaping professional outcomes, as it has been positively associated with enhanced performance and greater motivation. Conversely, insufficient job satisfaction may contribute to higher rates of staff turnover, professional burnout, and intentions to leave the profession. The objective was to investigate job satisfaction among pharmacists educated at Umeå University in Sweden over time and to explore factors affecting job satisfaction. A survey was distributed to pharmacy graduates who had completed web-based pharmacy programs at Umeå University between 2019 and 2023. Questions regarding job satisfaction and factors related to it were included. The response rate was 38%. The results were compared with results from a previous investigation (graduation years 2015–2018) to enable comparisons over time. Compared to findings from the previous survey, job satisfaction was lower in the present study (76.4% vs. 91.4%, p = 0.004). Both greater opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD) and the perception that the knowledge and skills gained during education are beneficial in the current job were associated with high job satisfaction (OR: 5.360; 95% CI: 1.896–15.156 and OR: 3.983; 95% CI: 1.255–12.642, respectively). Understanding factors contributing to job satisfaction can help employers improve retention and work environment. Full article
