This paper describes the complex process of rock crushing removal by AWJ impact from the microscopic perspective. The acceleration and deceleration mechanism of abrasive particles throughout the whole process of single abrasive particles impacting rocks, the spherical cavity expansion mechanism of the abrasive particles’ impact on the rock, and the elastic contact force of the collision between the abrasive particles and rock were investigated; a mathematical model of AWJ’s impact on the rock crushing removal conditions was established; and the threshold values of the jet impact parameters were obtained. The mathematical model of the rock crushing removal conditions was verified through numerical simulation and jet impact experiments. The research results show that the theoretical value of the jet impact velocity that meets the conditions for limestone crushing removal is greater than or equal to 36 m/s, and the theoretical value of the pressure is greater than or equal to 2.7 MPa. Numerical simulation was used to obtain the displacement of marked points, stress, and strain variation in marked elements of rock under different impact velocities. The effect of impact rock breaking obtained through the experiment demonstrates the correspondence between the test pressure and the theoretical pressure, which verifies the accuracy of the mathematical model of the rock crushing removal conditions. Study on Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Reheating Furnaces Under Oxygen-Enriched Conditions

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation methodology was implemented to model transient heating processes in steel industry reheating furnaces, targeting combustion efficiency optimization and carbon emission reduction. The effects of oxygen concentration (O2%) and different fuel types on the flow and heat transfer characteristics were investigated under both oxygen-enriched combustion and MILD oxy-fuel combustion. The results indicate that MILD oxy-fuel combustion promotes flue gas entrainment via high-velocity oxygen jets, leading to a substantial improvement in the uniformity of the furnace temperature field. The effect is most obvious at O2% = 31%. MILD oxy-fuel combustion significantly reduces NOx emissions, achieving levels that are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those under oxygen-enriched combustion. Under MILD conditions, the oxygen mass fraction in flue gas remains below 0.001 when O2% ≤ 81%, indicating effective dilution. In contrast, oxygen-enriched combustion leads to a sharp rise in flame temperature with an increasing oxygen concentration, resulting in a significant increase in NOx emissions. Elevating the oxygen concentration enhances both thermal efficiency and the energy-saving rate for both combustion modes; however, the rate of improvement diminishes when O2% exceeds 51%. Based on these findings, MILD oxy-fuel combustion using mixed gas or natural gas is recommended for reheating furnaces operating at O2% = 51–71%, while coke oven gas is not. Full article

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing offers mask-free, high-resolution deposition across a broad range of ink viscosities, yet combining void-free filling of high-aspect-ratio through-glass vias (TGVs) with ultrafine drop-on-demand (DOD) line printing on the same platform requires balancing conflicting requirements: for example, high field strengths to drive ink into deep and narrow vias; sufficiently high ink viscosity to prevent gravity-induced leakage; and stable meniscus dynamics to avoid satellite droplets and charge accumulation on the glass surface. By coupling electrostatic field analysis with transient level-set simulations, we establish a dimensionless regime map that delineates stable cone-jetting regime; these predictions are validated by high-speed imaging and surface profilometry. Operating within this window, the platform achieves complete, void-free filling of 200 µm × 1.52 mm TGVs and continuous 10 µm-wide traces in a single print pass. Demonstrating its capabilities, we fabricate transparent Ku-band substrate-integrated waveguide antennas on borosilicate glass: the printed vias and arc feed elements exhibit a reflection coefficient minimum of −18 dB at 14.2 GHz, a −10 dB bandwidth of 12.8–16.2 GHz, and an 8 dBi peak gain with 37° beam tilt, closely matching full-wave predictions. This physics-driven, all-in-one EHD approach provides a scalable route to high-performance, glass-integrated RF devices and transparent electronics. Full article

This study investigates the effects of key atmospheric features on mineral dust emissions and transport in the Sahara–Sahel region, focusing on the Bodélé Depression, during June 2006 and 2011. We use a combination of high-resolution atmospheric simulations (AROME model), satellite observations (MODIS), and reanalysis data (ERA5, ECMWF) to examine the roles of the low-level jet (LLJ), Saharan heat low (SHL), Intertropical Discontinuity (ITD), and African Easterly Jet (AEJ) in modulating dust activity. Our results reveal significant interannual variability in aerosol optical depth (AOD) between the two periods, with a marked decrease in June 2011 compared to June 2006. The LLJ emerges as a dominant factor in dust uplift over Bodélé, with its intensity strongly influenced by local topography, particularly the Tibesti Massif. The position and intensity of the SHL also play crucial roles, affecting the configuration of monsoon flow and Harmattan winds. Analysis of wind patterns shows a strong negative correlation between AOD and meridional wind in the Bodélé region, while zonal wind analysis emphasizes the importance of the AEJ and Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) in dust transport. Surprisingly, we observe no significant correlation between ITD position and AOD measurements, highlighting the complexity of dust emission processes. This study is the first to combine climatological context and case studies to demonstrate the effects of African monsoon variability on dust uplift at intra-seasonal timescales, associated with the modulation of ITD latitude position, SHL, LLJ, and AEJ. Our findings contribute to understanding the complex relationships between large-scale atmospheric features and dust dynamics in this key source region, with implications for improving dust forecasting and climate modeling efforts. The detection of trace chemicals at low and ultra-low concentrations is critical for applications in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, food safety and other fields. Conventional detection techniques often lack the required sensitivity, specificity, or cost-effectiveness, making real-time, in situ analysis challenging. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical tool, offering improved sensitivity through the enhancement of Raman scattering by plasmonic nanostructures. While noble metals such as Ag and Au are currently the reference choices for SERS substrates, fabrication methods should balance enhancement efficiency, reproducibility and scalability. In this study, we propose a novel approach for SERS substrate fabrication using reactive Aerosol Jet Printing (r-AJP) as an innovative additive manufacturing technique. The r-AJP process enables in-flight Ag seed reduction and nucleation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) by mixing silver nitrate and ascorbic acid aerosols before deposition, as suggested by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The resulting coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, revealing the formation of nanoporous crystalline Ag agglomerates partially covered by residual matter. The as-prepared SERS substrates exhibited remarkable SERS activity, demonstrating a high enhancement factor (106) for rhodamine (R6G) detection. Our findings highlight the potential of r-AJP as a scalable and cost-effective fabrication strategy for next-generation SERS sensors, paving the way for the development of a new additive manufacturing tool for noble metal material deposition. This paper catalogues a series of experiments we conducted to explore how to 3D print a DC electric motor. The individual parts of the electric motor were 3D printed but assembled by hand. First, we focused on a rotor with soft magnetic properties, for which we adopted ProtoPastaTM, which is a commercial off-the-shelf PLA filament incorporating iron particles. Second, we focused on the stator permanent magnets, which were 3D printed through binder jetting. Third, we focused on the wire coils, for which we adopted a form of laminated object manufacture of copper wire. The chief challenge was in 3D printing the coils, because the winding density is crucial to the performance of the motor. We have demonstrated that DC electric motors can be 3D printed and assembled into a functional system. Although the performance was poor due to the wiring problem, we showed that the other 3D printing processes were consistent with high performance. Nevertheless, we demonstrated the principle of 3D printing electric motors. Full article

Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

Tapered roller bearings are extensively utilized in the aerospace industry owing to their superior load-carrying capacity and extended service life. However, the majority of research conducted by scholars on the subject of bearing lubrication has focused on ball and cylindrical roller bearings. There is a paucity of research on the internal lubricants and air distribution of tapered roller bearings under oil jet lubrication conditions. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation model specifically designed for the oil jet lubrication of tapered roller bearings. The flow field inside the bearing cavity is analyzed under various operating conditions, and the impact of different parameters on lubrication performance is quantitatively assessed using the oil return efficiency as a metric. Additionally, an experimental test stand for the jet lubrication of tapered roller bearings was developed. The simulated oil return efficiency was compared with experimental data, revealing discrepancies within 10%, thereby validating the accuracy of the CFD model. The findings suggest that directing the oil jet toward the smaller end of the bearing, appropriately increasing the nozzle flow rate, and utilizing positive jetting can significantly improve the lubrication performance of tapered roller bearings. The aim of this study was to determine the connection between oscillations in operating pressure values and the appearance of various irregularities on machined surfaces. Such oscillations are a consequence of the high water pressure generated during abrasive water jet machining. Oscillations in the operating pressure values are periodic, namely due to the cyclic operation of the intensifier and the physical characteristics of water. One of the most common means of reducing this phenomenon is installing an attenuator in the hydraulic system or a phased intensifier system. The main hypothesis of this study was that the topography of a machined surface is directly influenced by the inability of the pressure accumulator to fully absorb water pressure oscillations. In this study, we monitored changes in hydraulic oil pressure values at the intensifier entrance and their connection with irregularities on the machined surface—such as waviness—when cutting aluminum AlMg3 of different thicknesses. Experimental research was conducted in order to establish this connection. Aluminum AlMg3 of different thicknesses—from 6 mm to 12 mm—was cut with different traverse speeds while hydraulic oil pressure values were monitored. The pressure signals thus obtained were analyzed by applying the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm. We identified a single-sided pressure signal amplitude spectrum. The frequency axis can be transformed by multiplying inverse frequency data with traverse speed; in this way, a single-sided amplitude spectrum can be obtained, examined against the period in which striations are expected to appear (in millimeters). In the lower zone of the analyzed samples, striations are observed at intervals determined by the dominant hydraulic oil pressure harmonics, which are transferred to the operating pressure. In other words, we demonstrate how the machined surface topography is directly induced by water jet pressure frequency characteristics. Full article

In Silico Characterization of Molecular Interactions of Aviation-Derived Pollutants with Human Proteins: Implications for Occupational and Public Health

Combustion of aviation jet fuel emits a complex mixture of pollutants linked to adverse health outcomes among airport personnel and nearby communities. While epidemiological studies showed the detrimental effects of aviation-derived air pollutants on human health, the molecular mechanisms of the interactions of these pollutants with cellular biomolecules like proteins that drive the adverse health effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed molecular docking simulations of 272 pollutant–protein complexes using AutoDock Vina 1.2.7 to characterize the binding strength of the pollutants with the selected proteins. We selected 34 aviation-derived pollutants that constitute three chemical categories of pollutants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). Each pollutant was docked to eight proteins that play critical roles in endocrine, metabolic, transport, and neurophysiological functions, where functional disruption is implicated in disease. The effect of binding of multiple pollutants was analyzed. Our results indicate that aliphatic and monoaromatic VOCs display low (<6 kcal/mol) binding affinities while PAHs and organophosphate esters exhibit strong (>7 kcal/mol) binding affinities. Furthermore, the binding strength of PAHs exhibits a positive correlation with the increasing number of aromatic rings in the pollutants, ranging from nearly 7 kcal/mol for two aromatic rings to more than 15 kcal/mol for five aromatic rings. Analysis of intermolecular interactions showed that these interactions are predominantly stabilized by hydrophobic, pi-stacking, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Simultaneous docking of multiple pollutants revealed the increased binding strength of the resulting complexes, highlighting the detrimental effect of exposure to pollutant mixtures found in ambient air near airports. We provide a priority list of pollutants that regulatory authorities can use to further develop targeted mitigation strategies to protect the vulnerable personnel and communities near airports. Impact of Hydrogen Release on Accidental Consequences in Deep-Sea Floating Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Platforms

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. This study explores how different electrode shapes affect plasma flow in a non-transferred plasma torch. Various cathode geometries—including conical, tapered, flat, and cylindrical—were examined alongside stepped anode designs. A 2D axisymmetric computational model was employed to assess the impact of these shapes on plasma behavior. The results reveal that different cathode designs require varying current levels to maintain a consistent power output. This paper presents the changes in electric conductivity and electric potential for different input currents across the arc formation path (from the cathode tip to the anode beginning) and relating to Ohm’s law. Significant variations in plasma jet velocity and temperature were observed, especially near the cathode tip. The study concludes by evaluating thermal efficiency across geometry configurations. Flat cathodes demonstrated the highest efficiency, while the anode shape had minimal impact. Full article

This study examines the performance of two diffuser configurations—a trumpet-shaped and a semi-diagonal design—for application in micro gas turbine engines, aiming to assess their suitability in terms of efficiency and operational flexibility. Both diffusers were initially evaluated using steady-state CFD simulations with the k-omega SST turbulence model, followed by experimental testing on an actual engine across the start-up sequence from idle to 70% of nominal speed. Performance was mapped over four constant-speed lines for each configuration. Results showed that the trumpet-shaped diffuser offered a greater choke margin but suffered from increased aerodynamic losses, whereas the semi-diagonal diffuser demonstrated higher efficiency but required closer alignment with the target operating point. The k-omega SST model showed strong predictive accuracy, with 5.13% agreement across all instrumented parameters for all investigated speed lines. These findings suggest that while the trumpet diffuser provides better stability, the semi-diagonal design is more efficient when properly targeted. Future work will focus on extending the analysis to higher speed ranges and transient regimes using harmonic balance CFD methods and enhanced data acquisition techniques. Full article

To enhance the survivability of armed helicopters in high-threat environments, integrated infrared (IR) suppressors are increasingly adopted to reduce thermal signatures. However, such integration significantly alters the exhaust flow field, which may in turn affect both the infrared and acoustic characteristics of the helicopter. This study investigates the aerodynamic, infrared, and acoustic impacts of an integrated IR suppressor through the comparative analysis of two helicopter configurations: a conventional design and a design equipped with an integrated IR suppressor. Full-scale models are used to analyze flow field and IR radiation characteristics, while scaled models are employed for aeroacoustic simulations. The results show that although the integrated IR suppressor increases flow resistance and reduces entrainment performance within the exhaust mixing duct, it significantly improves the thermal dissipation efficiency of the exhaust plume. The infrared radiation analysis reveals that the integrated suppressor effectively reduces radiation intensity in both the 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm bands, especially under cruise conditions where the exhaust is more efficiently cooled by ambient airflow. Equivalent radiation temperatures calculated along principal axes confirm lower IR signatures for the integrated configuration. Preliminary acoustic analyses suggest that the slit-type nozzle and integrated suppressor layout may also offer potential benefits in jet noise reduction. Overall, the integrated IR suppressor provides a clear advantage in lowering the infrared observability of armed helicopters, with acceptable aerodynamic and acoustic trade-offs. These findings offer valuable guidance for the future development of low-observable helicopter platforms. Full article

To improve environmental sustainability and operational safety in maritime industries, the development of efficient methods for removing biofouling from submerged surfaces is critical. This study investigates the erosion mechanisms of cavitation jets as a non-contact, high-efficiency method for detaching marine organisms, including bacteria and larvae, from ship hulls and underwater infrastructure. Through erosion experiments on coated specimens, variations in jet morphology, and flow visualization using the Schlieren method, we examined how factors such as jet incident angle and nozzle configuration influence removal performance. The results reveal that erosion occurs not only at the direct jet impact zone but also in regions where cavitation bubbles exhibit intense motion, driven by pressure fluctuations and shock waves. Notably, single-hole jets with longer potential cores produced more concentrated erosion, while multi-jet interference enhanced bubble activity. These findings underscore the importance of understanding bubble distribution dynamics in the flow field and provide insight into optimizing cavitation jet configurations to expand the effective cleaning area while minimizing material damage. This study contributes to advancing biofouling removal technologies that promote safer and more sustainable maritime operations. Full article
