Objectives: Anisakidosis is an emerging, cosmopolitan, and underdiagnosed parasitic disease caused by the accidental ingestion of third-stage anisakid larvae when consuming raw or improperly prepared seafood. Within hours to days of consuming infected raw seafood, patients may develop acute gastrointestinal symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or constipation, as live anisakid larvae attach to the gastric, or more rarely, the intestinal mucosa. Cases have been reported in which the nematodes succeed at migrating from the stomach upwards to the esophagus and then the oral cavity. Therefore, the purpose of the present literature review is to collect, analyze, summarize and present the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data concerning anisakidosis localized inside the oral cavity. Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases was performed with them being accessed for the last time on 29 March 2025. Results: The present literature review identified 13 individual case reports of oral mucosa anisakidosis, which were published in the period 1971–2022. Conclusions: Our review aims to summarize the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data regarding the oral localization of anisakidosis, a helminthic infection caused by the accidental ingestion of live anisakid larvae and which manifests mainly with gastrointestinal symptoms. Its localization in the oral mucosa appears to be exceptionally rare and, in most cases, occurs with a characteristic clinical picture, defined by the onset of acute mouth or throat pain immediately after the consumption of raw seafood and by the observation of one or more larvae, either lying on or penetrating the oral mucosa. Despite its rarity, dental health professionals and other clinicians should be aware of this disease and the possibility of its intraoral localization, since environmental factors on the one hand, and the adoption of foreign dietary habits on the other, will likely make anisakidosis a much more common disease worldwide in the near future. Background: Polyparasitic infections remain widespread in endemic regions, yet its contributing factors and health impact are not well understood. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors and examines the effect of polyparasitic infection on haemoglobin levels among children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lambaréné, Gabon, among children aged 2–17 years from November 2019 to December 2020. Haemoglobin levels, environmental conditions, and sociodemographic data were collected. Stool, urine, and blood samples were analysed using light microscopy for parasite detection. Factors associated with polyparasitism were explored. Results: Out of 656 participants, 65.4% had at least one infection, with intestinal protozoa species (21.3%), Trichuris trichiura (33%), Ascaris lumbricoides (22%), Schistosoma haematobium (20%), and Plasmodium falciparum (10%) being the most common. Polyparasitic infection was identified in 26% of children, mostly as bi-infections (69.2%), and was negatively associated with haemoglobin levels (β = −0.06). Conclusions: These findings emphasise the burden of polyparasitic infections and adverse health effects in Lambaréné, Gabon. Full article

Coyaima is a town in the department of Tolima, Colombia, that was prioritized in a pilot program under Colombia’s National Plan for the Control of the Taeniasis/Cysticercosis Complex, focusing on this neglected health issue. The project engaged local indigenous communities, promoting education and outreach within the One Health framework. The study included 444 randomly selected volunteers, who filled a Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey on the taeniasis/cysticercosis complex. The baseline study found no Taenia spp. eggs via microscopy on 383 stool samples examined, and no T. solium DNA was detected on human stool and soil samples by Copro-qPCR. However, seroprevalence was 8.5% for human cysticercosis and 14% for porcine cysticercosis, as detected by in-house ELISA testing for T. solium. Moreover, 57.9% of participants who provided a stool sample were positive for at least one parasite. Following the sampling and characterization activities, local health workers implemented mass treatment with Niclosamide, based on evidence of ongoing transmission, high porcine seroprevalence, poor basic sanitation, and the presence of free-roaming pigs reported in the KAP survey. These findings provide scientific evidence to apply national public health policies for controlling taeniasis/cysticercosis complex in Coyaima. Full article

Background/Objectives: Undernutrition and intestinal parasitic infections are critical public health problems in low-income countries, with adverse effects on child growth and increasing anaemia. Madagascar, with a high prevalence of these factors, lacks comprehensive studies analysing their interaction. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status, the prevalence of anaemia, and the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infections among children and adolescents in three southern regions of Madagascar. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective study of 289 children and adolescents (10–18 years) from three schools located in Antsoamadiro, Fianarantsoa, and Toliara was conducted. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and haemoglobin concentration data, as well as faecal samples, were collected. Nutritional status was assessed by Nutrimetry, combining Height-for-Age and BMI-for-Age indicators. Stool samples were analysed by optical microscopy and molecular methods. Results: Nutricode 1 (short stature/stunting + thinness/wasting) was significantly more frequent in Toliara. Nutricode 1 was also significantly more prevalent in males than females. Anaemia affected 57.8% of participants and was significantly associated with Nutricode 1. The overall parasitism rate was also associated with Nutricode 1. Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides significantly increased the risk of stunting, wasting, and Nutricode 1. Co-infection with Trichuris trichiura + Giardia duodenalis was significantly associated with wasting and Nutricode 1. This co-infection was also related to the presence of anaemia, as was moderate-intensity infection with T. trichiura. Conclusions: There is a high co-burden of undernutrition, anaemia, and parasitic infections in southern Madagascar. These findings highlight the urgency of implementing comprehensive health programmes combining parasite control, nutritional support, and iron supplementation adapted to regional realities. Balantioides coli is the only ciliate currently described as an intestinal parasite of humans, although it can also infect other animals, particularly pigs. Its in vitro cultivation remains challenging, and no axenic culture system is currently available. Cultures are initiated by adding small amounts of feces containing cysts or trophozoites to the culture medium. Implantation success is lower when starting from cysts, and the mechanisms and early events of excystation remain poorly understood. In this study, we describe the sequence of events involved in excystation and identify factors potentially important for culture establishment. Cysts were obtained from orangutan feces and genetically confirmed as B. coli. Only viable cysts, determined by trypan blue or methylene blue exclusion, were used. After artificial digestion with pepsin and trypsin, cysts were incubated at 28 °C for up to 72 h in DMEM supplemented with L-glutamine, yeast extract, fetal bovine serum, and starch granules. Excystation began with a fissure in the cyst wall, allowing for bacterial entry. This appeared to stimulate the trophozoites, the increased motility of which progressively weakened and ruptured the wall, allowing for their emergence. Wall rupture and bacterial entry were critical for activation., whereas starch type had no apparent influence. Excystation occurred within the first hours; otherwise, cysts degenerated. Full article

The Atlantic chub mackerel, Scomber colias, is sold in Spain, as well as another species of the genus, like the Atlantic mackerel, S. scombrus, often mistaken to be the same fish. This study aims to analyse the risk of human anisakiosis through the consumption of S. colias, and to clarify if these two species differ regarding this risk. A total of 250 S. colias (125 originating from the Atlantic and 125 from the Mediterranean) were helminthologically analysed using conventional parasitological techniques. Concerning Ascaridoid nematodes, the prevalence of Anisakis type I was higher in the Atlantic than in the Mediterranean. The presence of three other helminth parasites stands out, two other Ascaridoid nematodes, the larvae of Contracaecum spp. and Hysterothylacium spp., the latter a food-spoiling and non-pathogenic parasite. The other helminth found was the intestinal adult of the acanthocephalan Rhadinorhynchus pristis, also non-pathogenic. The comparison of the current results with previously published ones by our research group on S. scombrus show that Anisakis type I prevalence was higher in S. scombrus than in S. colias, making the correct differentiation between them necessary, given their varying risk of human anisakiosis. Furthermore, fish label information is important to prevent the risk of anisakiosis for consumers. Full article

Ecdysterone controls moulting and reproduction in insects, crustaceans, and helminths. It is also produced by many plants, probably as an insect deterrent. The steroid is not made by vertebrates but has anabolic effects in mammals and could be useful for treating sarcopenia in aged horses. However, ecdysterone is banned in horseracing and equestrian sports, and with no limit of reporting, the risk of unintended exposure to this naturally occurring prohibited substance is a concern. To explore this risk, pasture plants and hay samples were analysed for ecdysterone content, as well as samples of blood, faeces, and intestinal mucosa from horses (euthanized for non-research purposes) with varying degrees of endo-parasite infestation. The variability in serum ecdysterone concentrations between different horses after administering a fixed dose was also examined. Ecdysterone was detected in 24 hay samples (0.09 to 3.74 µg/g) and several weeds, with particularly high concentrations in Chenopodium album (244 µg/g) and Solanum nigrum (233 µg/g). There was a positive correlation between faecal ecdysterone and faecal egg counts, but no effect of anthelmintic treatment and no relation to the number of encysted cyathostome larvae in the large intestine mucosa. Certain horses maintained an unusually high serum ecdysterone concentration over several weeks and/or displayed an abnormally large response to oral ecdysterone administration. Thus, the risk of environmental exposure to ecdysterone is apparent, and several factors must be considered when determining an appropriate dosage for clinical studies or setting a reporting threshold for equine sports. Serious enteric disease caused by seven species of Eimeira continues to cause significant economic damage to the poultry industry. E. acervulina is one of the most widespread strains in farms and has a significant impact on chicken weight loss. Currently, the use of anticoccidial agents to suppress the occurrence of coccidiosis in farms is considerably restricted due to public health and environmental pollution issues. It is important to understand the protective immunity of the host against Eimeria infections with regard to natural products that could be used as alternatives to anticoccidial agents. Berberine chloride is known for its various biological functions, including its anti-parasite activity. However, its impact on intestinal morphology and immune-related activity in broilers infected with Eimeria still remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anticoccidial effects of a berberine-based diet in broilers infected with E. acervulina and to monitor the host immune phenomenon using transcriptomic analysis. Administration of berberine to chickens infected with E. acervulina significantly reduced fecal oocyst production and intestinal lesion scores, and increased duodenal villus height, indicating anticoccidial activity and positive effects on intestinal morphology. Transcriptomic analysis of chickens infected with E. acervulina generally observed the down-regulation of metabolism-related genes and the up-regulation of cell integrity-related genes at day 4 post-infection. At day 6 post-infection, an increase in immune-related genes and cellular-homeostasis-related genes was generally observed. Berberine-treated and E. acervulina-infected chickens showed cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction in the second term in a Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis at day 4 post-infection, but not in chickens infected with E. acervulina alone, suggesting host immune changes induced by berberine. These results suggest that berberine, which exhibits anticoccidial effects, may have therapeutic and/or prophylactic potential in protecting the host from infectious and economic-loss-causing diseases, such as Eimeria infection. Intestinal microbial eukaryotic parasites represent a significant public and veterinary health burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries, yet their transmission dynamics at the human–animal–environment interface remain poorly characterized in certain countries. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of key microbial eukaryotes, including Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Blastocystis spp., Entamoeba histolytica, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi, in a rural village in Iraq. Samples collected from humans (n = 50), livestock (sheep and goats, n = 50), water (n = 20), and soil (n = 20) were analysed using microscopy and molecular methods (qPCR and nested PCR). Blastocystis spp. (78% animals, 16% humans, 45% soil, 5% water) and Cryptosporidium spp. (26% animals, 12% humans, 5% soil, 15% water) were the most frequently found microeukaryotes using either microscopy and/or molecular detection. Molecular methods identified Cryptosporidium parvum in humans and sheep, hinting at zoonotic transmission potential. Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Giardia were also found. Cryptosporidium ubiquitum and E. bieneusi genotypes BEB6 and COS-I, respectively, were detected exclusively in sheep, suggesting roles as potential reservoirs. Blastocystis ST1 was detected in humans, while ST4 and ST10 occurred in sheep. Notably, molecular detection rates of Blastocystis were much lower than those of microscopy. Entamoeba histolytica was not detected. The detection of the same organisms in humans, animals and the environment suggest zoonotic and environmental transmission pathways, which warrant further investigation using the One Health approach. Alosa immaculata Bennett, 1835, commonly referred to as the Danube shad, is an anadromous pelagic species of the Clupeidae family, and plays a significant economic role for countries bordering the Black Sea. This study investigates the occurrence of both parasites and microplastics in A. immaculata specimens collected from Sfântu Georghe, with the aim of assessing their potential impact on fish health. The overall physiological condition of the fish was evaluated using Fulton’s condition factor (K) to determine whether the presence of parasites or microplastics had any measurable effect. Five parasitic genera were identified, including one ectoparasitic species from the genus Mazocraes, and four endoparasitic species from the genera Pronoprymna, Lecithaster, Hysterotylacium, and Contracaecum. Microplastic analysis showed a dominance of particles measuring 1–5 mm (62.5%), with fibers and foils being the only morphological forms detected. The most common colors were black (45%), transparent (35%), blue (12.5%), and brown (7.5%). The distribution of microplastics was higher in the stomach than intestines. Our findings offer critical insights into the combined effects of parasitic infection and microplastic pollution on this key Black Sea species. The integrated methodology, combining parasite load, microplastic content, and condition factor analysis, marks a novel approach in fish health assessment. Full article

Indigenous people possess unique health literacy issues and challenges with preventing infectious diseases. This research assessed the baseline knowledge and misinformation in the Semai indigenous subgroup in Perak state, Malaysia, and the impact of a culturally adapted health education intervention. A single-group pre-test/post-test design was used with 156 participants ranging from 7 to 69 years old, predominantly children. The survey addressed key issues of head lice, intestinal parasites, tuberculosis (TB), handwashing, and germ transmission. An interactive, multi-station health education session in the local language produced a significant increase in overall knowledge (mean score increased from 3.17 to 3.83 out of 5, p < 0.0001), with the largest increase among the adult group aged 31–50 years. This was most notable for handwashing knowledge, which had the greatest increase, and misconceptions about intestinal worms and head lice remained. Differences in outcome by age suggest the need for targeted educational strategies, particularly for teenagers and elderly individuals who achieved less gain. The results support the effectiveness of culturally tailored, community-based health education in promoting the awareness of disease among indigenous communities. The drawbacks are convenience sampling, the child dominance of the sample, and the short-term follow-up. Future emphasis should be placed on long-term, community-based intervention using culturally tailored content and digital media. Full article

Intestinal Microeukaryotes in Fish: A Concise Review of an Underexplored Component of the Microbiota

The intestinal microbiota of fish is predominantly composed of prokaryotic microorganisms, with research historically focused on bacteria. In contrast, the role of microeukaryotic organisms in the fish gut remains largely unexplored. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the diversity, ecology, and potential functions of intestinal microeukaryotes, particularly fungi and protozoans, in teleost fish. Fungi, especially Ascomycota and Basidiomycota phyla members, are consistently identified across species and may contribute to digestion, immune modulation, and microbial homeostasis. Protists, though often viewed as pathogens, also exhibit potential commensal or immunoregulatory roles, including the modulation of bacterial communities through grazing. Other eukaryotic taxa, including metazoan parasites, microalgae, and zooplankton, are commonly found as transient or diet-derived members of the gut ecosystem. While many of these organisms remain poorly characterized, emerging evidence suggests they may play essential roles in host physiology and microbial balance. The review highlights the need for improved detection methodologies, functional studies using gnotobiotic and in vitro models, and multi-kingdom approaches to uncover fish gut microeukaryotes’ ecological and biotechnological potential. Waterborne Transmission Driving the Prevalence of Blastocystis sp. in Los Ríos Region, Southern Chile

Waterborne gastrointestinal infections remain a global health concern, with approximately 1.7 billion diarrhea-related illnesses annually attributable to protozoan parasites. These pathogens are transmitted through contaminated water and exhibit high resistance to chlorination, posing substantial challenges to effective water treatment. This study focused on the most prevalent intestinal parasites in the Los Ríos Region of Chile: Blastocystis sp., Giardia duodenalis, and Entamoeba coli. The objectives were to assess the prevalence of eukaryotic parasites in water samples—covering both drinking and recreational sources—to describe the circulating subtypes of Blastocystis sp. and to identify ecological factors associated with parasite presence. Water samples were analyzed using conventional PCR, next-generation sequencing (NGS) was employed for Blastocystis sp. subtype identification, and the environmental predictors were evaluated using a multivariable logistic regression model. A total of 132 water samples were analyzed, of which 15.2% were positive for Blastocystis sp. and 1.5% for E. coli, while no samples tested positive for G. duodenalis. We identified subtypes ST1–ST4 of Blastocystis sp., along with ST7, ST10, ST14, ST21, and ST23–ST26, the latter being reported for the first time in Chile. Ecological factors significantly associated with Blastocystis sp. presence included higher water temperature and greater rainfall at positive sites. Potable water was associated with significantly lower odds of Blastocystis sp. infection (aOR = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.00–0.87; p = 0.041), while precipitation increased infection odds by 3% per additional millimeter (aOR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00–1.06; p = 0.036). Greater distance to the nearest farmhouse was also significantly associated with reduced infection risk, suggesting that proximity to livestock environments may influence Blastocystis sp. transmission. These findings help explain the high prevalence of Blastocystis sp. observed in humans in the Los Ríos Region and highlight the pivotal role of ecological conditions in driving waterborne transmission. To our knowledge, this is the first environmental study in Chile to clearly demonstrate the association between human infection, environmental factors, and the transmission dynamics of Blastocystis sp. Genetic Diversity of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in Diarrheic Shelter Dogs in Romania: First Molecular and Phylogenetic Evidence

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is one of the most common microsporidian parasites, primarily infecting the intestinal epithelial cells of a broad range of animal species, including humans. To date, no scientific reports have documented Enterocytozoon spp. in animal hosts in Romania. This study aimed to assess the occurrence and genetic characteristics of E. bieneusi in shelter dogs, as well as its potential public health relevance. Between December 2022 and May 2025, a total of 112 freshly voided diarrheal fecal samples were collected from dogs housed in a shelter near Timișoara Municipality, Romania. The samples were subjected to molecular analysis using a two-step nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rRNA gene. The resulting sequences were deposited in GenBank® and analyzed phylogenetically. PCR analysis revealed E. bieneusi DNA in 11 (9.8%) samples, identifying two genotypes, with PtEb IX (n = 10) as the dominant genotype and BEB4 (n = 1), which has zoonotic potential. A significant difference in prevalence was found between juvenile (23.1%) and adult (5.8%) dogs (p = 0.026). Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS sequences showed that the isolates clustered into two distinct clades alongside reference sequences from the GenBank® database. This is the first report of E. bieneusi infection in animals in Romania, providing essential baseline data and highlighting the need for broader surveillance into its prevalence and genetic diversity in other potential hosts. These results reflect the prevalence and genetic diversity of E. bieneusi exclusively among symptomatic (diarrheic) dogs and should not be generalized to the broader shelter dog population. (1) Background: We combined physiological and morphological data of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) to provide insights into the question of how urbanization affects the health of urban wildlife populations. (2) Methods: We dissected 39 urban and 34 rural wild rabbits in order to compare organ weights, as well as stomach contents. Furthermore, we collected blood and fecal samples. (3) Results: Rural rabbits had a significantly longer body and a higher body weight as well as more fat tissue around their kidneys compared to urban rabbits. In contrast, the stomach, the intestines, the liver, the lung, and the brain of urban rabbits were significantly heavier. The amount of hematocrit, hemoglobin, and the mean corpuscular volume was significantly higher in urban rabbits. The caloric energy content of the stomach was comparable between rural and urban rabbits and was merely influenced by the season being higher in autumn. Rural rabbits had an overall higher mean parasite index compared to urban rabbits. (4) Conclusions: The results of our study allow for a deeper understanding of how density-dependent (e.g., transmission of diseases) and density-independent factors (e.g., food quality) influence the health status and life history traits of urban wildlife populations compared to their rural counterparts.
