This perspective advances a psychoanalytic—embodiment account of the “libido of generativity” (LoG)—future-oriented reorganization of erotic desire that links embodied arousal with caregiving, legacy, and shared projects. We define LoG along four axes (direction of investment: dyad↔triad; temporal horizon: immediacy↔future; outcome modalities: procreative, creative–sublimative, community-forming; affective regulation: shame/guilt↔pride/gratitude). Integrating interoception, body ownership/agency, and self-compassion with reproductive mentalizing, we specify three proximal levers—embodiment, affect regulation, and representation—through which sexual mindfulness can recalibrate bodily salience, blunt shame-based self-objectification, and expand triadic representations (self–partner–child/symbolic offspring). We then translate these mechanisms into a brief, practice-ready relationship guidance (RG) curriculum (6–8 sessions) combining somatic mindfulness, compassion micro-practices, reproductive-mentalizing dialogs, communication skills, and generative rituals. We articulate falsifiable propositions (e.g., mindfulness → ↑couple satisfaction via ↓body-image self-consciousness and ↑reproductive mentalizing) and a sex/gender-attentive reporting plan (SAGER). Primary outcomes include sexual functioning/satisfaction and couple satisfaction/communication; secondary mechanistic endpoints index interoceptive accuracy/awareness (including heartbeat-evoked potentials), self-compassion, and reproductive mentalizing. By aligning contemplative practices with couple-skills training and equity-focused implementation, the LoG framework offers a testable bridge from psychoanalytic theory and embodiment science to measurable improvements in sexual health and couple well-being. The present study examined associations between presence/absence of a mask and facial emotion recognition, and how interoceptive awareness, i.e., the perception of internal bodily sensations, may influence associations between them. Eighty-two university students participated in an online behavioral experiment. Participants were required to evaluate categories of emotions as well as valence and arousal levels of facial stimuli that were either neutral or expressed one of Paul Ekman’s basic emotions, i.e., anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. Participants also completed a psychological scale on interoceptive awareness. Results showed that accuracy of categorization was significantly lower and levels of valence and arousal were significantly closer to neutral in masked than in unmasked faces for multiple emotions. In addition, individuals who showed higher, as compared to lower, emotional awareness reported significantly higher levels of valence for masked stimuli that expressed surprise. These results suggest that wearing a mask can impair accuracy of facial emotion recognition and sensitivity to emotions, whereas awareness of the association between interoception and emotion might mitigate impairments of sensitivity to emotions in masked faces. Interoceptive impairments are increasingly recognized as psychopathology processes underlying emotional disorders. However, their relationship with depression remains inconclusive. Alexithymia may influence the association between interoception and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to examine the role of alexithymia between interoception and depression. Eighty-eight depressed patients (DEPs) and fifty healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Interoceptive sensibility was assessed using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, and interoceptive accuracy and interoceptive awareness were evaluated through heartbeat counting tasks. Alexithymia was measured with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. In the DEP group, depressive symptoms were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Scale. In DEPs, none of the three dimensions of interoception were associated with depressive symptoms. The alexithymic depressed patients exhibited lower interoceptive sensibility than their non-alexithymic counterparts, while the latter did not differ from the HC group. Moreover, alexithymia mediated the link between interoceptive sensibility and depressive symptoms. These results suggested that impaired interoceptive sensibility may primarily contribute to alexithymia, which, in turn, leads to depression. This highlights the importance of addressing alexithymia in therapeutic interventions aimed at improving the interoceptive process in depressed individuals. Full article

The demand for large-scale, heavy-duty autonomous pavement-sweeping robots is rising due to urban growth, hygiene needs, and labor shortages. Ensuring their health and safe operation in dynamic outdoor environments is vital, as terrain unevenness and slope gradients can accelerate wear, increase maintenance costs, and pose safety risks. This study introduces an AI-driven condition monitoring (CM) framework designed to detect terrain unevenness and slope gradients in real time, distinguishing between safe and unsafe conditions. As system vibration levels and energy consumption vary with terrain unevenness and slope gradients, vibration and current data are collected for five CM classes identified: safe, moderately safe terrain, moderately safe slope, unsafe terrain, and unsafe slope. A simple-structured one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) model is developed for fast and accurate prediction of the safe to unsafe classes for real-time application. An in-house developed large-scale autonomous pavement-sweeping robot, PANTHERA 2.0, is used for data collection and real-time experiments. The training dataset is generated by extracting representative vibration and heterogeneous slope data using three types of interoceptive sensors mounted in different zones of the robot. These sensors complement each other to enable accurate class prediction. The dataset includes angular velocity data from an IMU, vibration acceleration data from three vibration sensors, and current consumption data from three current sensors attached to the key motors. A CM-map framework is developed for real-time monitoring of the robot by fusing the predicted anomalous classes onto a 3D occupancy map of the workspace. The performance of the trained CM framework is evaluated through offline and real-time field trials using statistical measurement metrics, achieving an average class prediction accuracy of 92% and 90.8%, respectively. This demonstrates that the proposed CM framework enables maintenance teams to take timely and appropriate actions, including the adoption of suitable maintenance strategies. Full article

Background and Objectives: Sport practice, performance satisfaction, and interoception influence physical and mental health. Motor imagery (MI) training improves sensorimotor and cognitive–emotional functions. This study aimed to (a) compare sedentary and artistic gymnastics-practicing young females and (b) evaluate the changes in interoception and performance satisfaction occurring in gymnastics-practicing participants after one month of motor imagery training. Materials and Methods: The difference in interoceptive accuracy (IA) and sensibility (IS) between young sedentary females (Control group, C, n = 27) and age-matched females practicing artistic gymnastics (Experimental group, E, n = 27) were studied using the Interoceptive Accuracy Scale (IAS), the Multisensory Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), and Body Perception Questionnaire (BPQ). The capacity for focusing one’s attention on specific tasks (absorption) was assessed by the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS). Groups were compared at T0 (before motor imagery training). In group E, the same variables and satisfaction with performance were rated before and after 1 month of motor imagery training. The years of practice and absorption were used as covariates in analyses. Results: (a) Group E exhibited significantly higher scores in the MAIA dimensions than group C and similar BPQ and IAS scores; (b) group E’s satisfaction with performance, MAIA, IAS, and BPQ scores increased significantly from T0 to T1. The increase in performance satisfaction became non-significant when using years of practice as the control. The improvement in MAIA dimensions became non-significant when using TAS as the control. Conclusions: Despite the limitations as a result of the absence of an objective evaluation of the performance and physiological correlations of mental imagery and interoceptive accuracy, the baseline differences between the two groups confirm that practicing artistic gymnastics improves interoception. The experience undergone by group E of better performance after training is associated with further improvement in interoceptive intermingled pathways and shared relay stations of sensorimotor and interoceptive information. The results are relevant to the setting up of personalized mental training to improve physical and mental health. Full article

Background/Objectives: The physiological basis underlying symptomatic versus asymptomatic premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) remains poorly understood. However, symptomatic PVCs can significantly impair quality of life. In patients without structural heart disease, symptom intensity is crucial for guiding management strategies and determining the need for medical or surgical intervention. In this study, we aimed, for the first time, to examine the associations between PVC symptoms and cardiac interoception. Methods: This study included 34 participants with PVCs (20 women; median age = 42 years; 17 participants had asymptomatic PVCs) without concomitant disorders. Interoception was assessed through interoceptive accuracy (IA) probed by two behavioral tests—mental tracking (MT) and heartbeat detection (HBD)—and the neurophysiological marker of cardiac interoception, the heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs). Symptom intensity scores reported by patients served as the response variable in the regression analysis, with IA and HEP as predictors. Other factors such as sex, age, percent of body fat, trait anxiety, and alexithymia were added to the models as confounding variables. Results: IAMT was significantly higher in patients with symptomatic PVCs. IAMT and HEP modulation for the HBD task were associated with symptom intensity. A combined regression model incorporating both metrics showed the highest predictive accuracy for symptom severity. Adding confounding variables improved model quality (lower AIC); however, only the male sex emerged as a significant negative predictor for symptom intensity. Conclusions: Our findings confirm a significant association between interoception and PVC symptom severity. Integrating behavioral and neurophysiological interoception measures enhances symptom prediction accuracy, suggesting new ways to develop diagnostic and non-invasive treatment strategies targeting interoception in PVC management. We investigated if interoceptive deficits could be the link between alexithymic traits and eating spectrum manifestations in a non-clinical sample. One-hundred sixty-one young adults (mean age: 23.2 ± 2.4 years) were evaluated with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Interoceptive Accuracy Scale (IAS), the Interoceptive Confusion Questionnaire (ICQ), and the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). Questionnaires were administered with an online procedure (Microsoft Form, Office 365 A1, Pisa, Italy) (Study Protocol #0012005/2023). We compared ICQ, IAS, and TAS-20 scores in subjects who met the threshold for a potential eating spectrum disorder according to EAT-26 scores ≥ 20 (n = 27) vs. subjects who scored <20 (n = 134), with an ANCOVA corrected for ‘age’ and ‘gender’. Subjects with EAT-26 ≥ 20, scored significantly higher at ICQ (54.4 ± 13.2 vs. 50.2 ± 6.8; p = 0.011), TAS-20 ‘Total Score’ (60.8 ± 11.9 vs. 58.1 ± 9.2; p = 0.006), and TAS-20 ‘Identifying Feelings’ (21.5 ± 7.6 vs. 17.3 ± 5.8; p = 0.0001). A binary logistic regression analysis, with EAT-26 scores < 20 vs. ≥20 as the dependent variable, and ICQ, IAS, TAS-20 total scores and dimensions, age, and gender (categorical) as covariates, showed that the only variable predicting eating spectrum symptomatology was ‘ICQ Total Score’ (OR = 1.075, 95% CI: 1.016–1.139; p = 0.013). Interoceptive confusion was the dimension linking the occurrence of alexithymic traits and eating spectrum manifestations. Full article

Studies in the field of experimental hypnosis highlighted the role of hypnotizability in the physiological variability of the general population. It is associated, in fact, with a few differences which are observable in the ordinary state of consciousness and in the absence of suggestions. The aim of the present scoping review is summarizing them and indicate their relevance to the neural mechanisms of hypnosis and to the prognosis and treatment of a few medical conditions. Individuals with high, medium and low hypnotizability scores display different cerebral functional differences—i.e., functional equivalence between imagery and perception/action, excitability of the motor cortex, interoceptive accuracy—possibly related to brain structural and functional characteristics, and different control of blood supply at peripheral and cerebral level, likely due to different availability of endothelial nitric oxide. These differences are reviewed to support the idea of their participation in hypnotic behaviour and to indicate their prognostic and therapeutic usefulness in a few medical conditions. Full article

Objective: Prior research has suggested a possible connection between vaccination and manifestations of Sickness Behavior; however, a need remains to first delve deeper into this association and second examine how Interoceptive Awareness and emotional factors may modulate individuals’ perceptions of their health status post vaccination. Method: An online retrospective cross-sectional survey of 647 individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccination was conducted. Together with vaccination side effects, socio-demographic characteristics, health status, level of concern about vaccination, and Interoceptive Awareness were collected at the baseline level. Mood, sleep, and Sickness Behavior were assessed at baseline and after vaccination. Data were analyzed using inferential statistics and machine learning techniques. Results: After vaccination, there was a significant increase in Sickness Behavior levels (mean (±SD) SicknessQ T0 = 1.57 (±2.72), mean (±SD) SicknessQ T1 = 5.54 (±5.51); p-value = 0.001; ES = 0.77). A Machine Learning analysis revealed specific patterns of individual dispositions (sex and age), baseline emotional characteristics (levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and concern about adverse reactions), as well as some components of Interoceptive Awareness (Noticing, Body Listening, and Attention Regulation), as predictors of high levels of Sickness Behavior, both in terms of overall scores (JRIP: 72.65% accuracy, AUC = 0.692, d = 0.709; F1 = 0.726) and individual items (JRIP: 75.77% accuracy, AUC = 0.694; d = 0.717; F1 = 0.754). Conclusions: Our results provide new insight into post-immune reactions by highlighting the contribution of Interoceptive Awareness in modulating the severity of Sickness Behavior. This sheds light on the role of awareness of bodily sensations in modulating perceptions of health status, helping to identify the characteristics that make individuals more prone to feeling sick. Background: Gaming disorder (GD) may impair executive functions such as response inhibition. According to the tripartite neurocognitive model, the interoceptive system generates a state of craving that exacerbates the dysfunction of GD. We speculate that emotional information may play an important role in the mechanism, which leads to impaired response inhibition in people with GD. Methods: A three-factor mixed experimental design was adopted in this go/nogo task. The between-subject factor was group (GD or control group), and the within-subject factors were two types of emotional information, task relevance (related or unrelated) and emotional valence (negative or positive). Results: The GD group had lower nogo accuracies than the control group in the task-unrelated condition and also in the negative condition. Parallelly, the GD group showed faster reactions and lower accuracy in the go trials than the control group under task-unrelated negative conditions. At the neural level, the GD group had smaller amplitudes of nogo-N2 and larger amplitudes of nogo-P3 than the control group in the task-unrelated condition. Conclusions: The findings prove the hypothesis of this study that emotional information could be a factor leading to impaired response inhibition in GD individuals. The response inhibition abilities of GD are weakened when processing task-unrelated or negative information, which may be caused by failure of behavioral inhibition and weakened conflict control, resulting in more cognitive resources to complete response suppression under specific conditions. This study provides evidence for weaker response inhibition in GD individuals from the perspective of cognitive–emotional interaction and provides more detailed information for interventions for GD. Mental representations in various bodily formats (e.g., somatosensory, interoceptive, motoric) have been suggested to play a pivotal role in social cognition. However, data on children and adolescents are lacking. This study aims to investigate whether individual differences in the sensing of the internal body state, in terms of interoceptive accuracy (IAcc) and sensibility (IS), and in the action-oriented (i.e., body schema) and non-action-oriented (i.e., visuo-spatial body map) body representations (BR) influence a core component of social cognition, namely empathy, during early adolescence. A total of 30 healthy teens (mean age 13.2 years) completed an empathy questionnaire, a heartbeat tracking task probing IAcc, an IS questionnaire including visceral and somatosensorial factors, and a computerized battery consisting of action-oriented and non-action-oriented BR tasks. The correlational analysis showed that as IAcc increased, empathy levels decreased, while as IS increased, empathy levels increased, especially when the visceral factor was taken into account. No association was found between action/non-action-oriented BR and empathy. These preliminary results suggest that teens with a higher sensibility towards visceral body changes also show a higher tendency to feel and understand another's emotional state. In contrast, teens with higher IAcc for cardiac signals show a lower empathy level, possibly due to a more stable body self-representation that prevents the self–other overlap necessary in some forms of empathy. As a corollary finding, the opposed relationship between these interoceptive dimensions and empathy confirms that IS and IA are two distinct constructs that can impact cognitive and affective abilities differently. Background: There is an increasing body of research supporting the idea that cardiac interoceptive accuracy (IAc) can be improved by training. Findings concerning the effects of a single yoga session on IAc and the related construct emotional experience are sparse. The aim of this study was to examine if a single yoga session increases IAc and improves emotional experience. Methods: 137 students were randomly assigned to a 20-min yoga session (n = 47), an endurance session (n = 46), or an inactive control condition (n = 44). IAc and emotional experience were assessed before and after the sessions. Results: There were no significant changes in IAc, or positive and negative affect. IAc at baseline and the change in positive effect were found as predictors for IAc after the yoga session. Conclusion: A 20-min yoga session seems to be not applicable to improve IAc and emotional experience. Future studies should investigate long-term interventions and diverse healthy and clinical populations. Full article

Background: Interoceptive accuracy and sensibility are decreased in depressive samples. However, different studies showed that cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness interventions are promising approaches to improve interoceptive abilities. Based on these findings, the study aims to investigate the pre–post effect of CBT in a depressive sample. Additionally, we examined the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) training in the context of CBT. Methods: Sixty depressive patients were investigated over four weeks, with two conditions—CBT vs. CBT + MBSR. Further, the changes in interoceptive abilities (interoceptive accuracy and sensibility) of the depressive patients were compared to baseline data of healthy controls. Results: The depressive patients showed significantly higher levels of depression and lower mindfulness and interoceptive abilities than healthy controls. The depressive sample showed a significant decrease in depressive symptoms and increased mindfulness and interoceptive abilities after CBT. Lastly, depressive patients of the CBT + MBSR condition did not differ from those who only received CBT in the levels of depression, mindfulness or interoceptive abilities over the time course. Discussion: This study demonstrates a positive effect of CBT on interoceptive abilities in a depressive sample. It is shown that the depressive sample did not profit from additional mindfulness training. It can be concluded that CBT is an efficient treatment, resulting in increased interoceptive abilities. Unexpectedly, the combination of CBT and MBSR has no additional effect on these changes. Future studies should investigate the effect of MBSR as a stand-alone therapy. Full article

The aim of this study was to investigate individual interoception by comparing the responses of swimmers and baseball players when exposed to specific water environments, depending on training content and environment. Forty-eight healthy male university students were evaluated for their interoceptive response (accuracy, sensibility, and awareness) and heart rate following 25 min of water immersion (WI) at 35 °C. We assessed three conditions: pre-WI, during WI, and post-WI. The results indicated that interoceptive accuracy (IAcc) did not differ between groups because both swimming and baseball do not require emotional expression, as opposed to an activity such as dance. The heart rate was significantly decreased at post-WI compared to that at pre-WI. The IAcc of post-WI presented as higher than that of pre-WI. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between the ratio of IAcc and that of HR among subjects. Moreover, the attention regulation subscale of the MAIA changed in the WI environment and the ratio of IAcc was negatively correlated with that of the not-distracting subscale of the MAIA. These results suggested that interoception did not differ among the athletes who had long-term training, which enabled them to acquire multi-modal sensorimotor integration, compared to that of non-athlete control participants. Individuals with different hypnotizability display different interoceptive sensitivity/awareness (IS) and accuracy (IA), likely sustained by morphofunctional differences in interoception-related brain regions and, thus, possibly also observable during sleep. We investigated the heartbeat-evoked cortical potential amplitude (HEP) during sleep, its association with IS, and the role of hypnotizability in such association. We performed a retrospective analysis of polysomnographic recordings of 39 healthy volunteers. Participants completed the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), measuring IS and IA, and underwent hypnotic assessment via the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, form A. The amplitude of the early and late HEP components was computed at EEG frontal and central sites. In both regions, the early HEP component was larger in N3 than in N2 and REM, with no difference between N2 and REM. Greater HEP amplitude at frontal than at central sites was found for the late HEP component. HEP amplitudes were not influenced by the autonomic state assessed by heart rate variability in the frequency and time domains. We report for the first time a positive correlation between the central late HEP component and MAIA dimensions, which became non-significant after removing the effects of hypnotizability. Our findings indicate that hypnotizability sustains the correlation between IS and HEP amplitude during sleep. Full article
