Concrete creep and shrinkage are critical factors affecting the long-term performance of extradosed bridges, leading to deflection, stress redistribution, and potential cracking. Predicting these effects is challenging due to uncertainties in empirical models and a lack of long-term data. While beam element models are common in design, they often fail to capture complex stress fields in disturbed regions (D-regions), potentially leading to non-conservative assessments of crack resistance. This study presents a computationally efficient probabilistic framework that integrates the First-Order Second-Moment (FOSM) method with a high-fidelity solid element model to analyze these time-dependent effects. Our analysis reveals that solid element models predict 14% higher long-term deflections and 64% greater sensitivity to creep and shrinkage parameters compared to beam models, which underestimate both the mean and variability of deformation. The FOSM-based framework proves highly efficient, with its prediction for the standard deviations of bridge deflection falling within 7.1% of those from the more computationally intensive Probability Density Evolution Method. Furthermore, we found that time-varying parameters have a minimal effect on principal stress directions, validating a scalar application of FOSM with less than 3% error. The analysis shows that uncertainties from creep and shrinkage models increase the 95% quantile of in-plane principal stresses by 0.58MPa, which is approximately 23% of the material’s tensile strength and increases the cracking risk. This research underscores the necessity of using high-fidelity models and probabilistic methods for the reliable design and long-term assessment of complex concrete bridges. Full article

This study introduces and validates a miniaturized testing methodology for the complete orthotropic characterization of structural plywood, including out-of-plane directions that are typically difficult to access. Novel small-scale geometries were developed for tension and shear configurations, with compliance corrections applied to ensure accurate stress–strain responses. The method proved reliable and sensitive to mechanical differences arising from veneer architecture, adhesive type, and interfacial bonding. Two sets of 18 mm structural plywood panels—manufactured with distinct adhesive systems, one bio-based (F1) and one phenol-formaldehyde (F2)—were systematically tested under tensile, compressive, and shear loading in ten orthogonal configurations (Tx, Ty, Tz, Cx, Cy, Cz, τxy, τyx, τxz, τyz), following standards NCh 3617, EN 789, and ASTM B831. Tensile moduli were approximately twice the corresponding compressive values, while out-of-plane moduli reached only 6–11% of in-plane values. F1 exhibited higher stiffness in both tension and compression, particularly in transverse directions, due to thicker perpendicular veneers enhancing bending restraint and shear coupling. In contrast, F2 achieved greater peak shear strength owing to its more uniform veneer structure, which improved stress distribution and delayed interlaminar failure. Observed asymmetry between tension and compression reflected microstructural mechanisms such as fiber alignment and cell-wall buckling. The miniature-specimen data provide reliable input for constitutive calibration and finite-element modeling, while revealing clear links between veneer-thickness distribution, shear-transfer efficiency, and macroscopic performance. The proposed framework enables efficient, reproducible orthotropic characterization for optimized, lightweight, and carbon-efficient timber systems. Full article

Composite pressure vessels have attracted significant attention in recent years owing to their lightweight characteristics and superior mechanical performance. However, analyzing composite layers remains challenging due to complex filament-winding (FW) pattern structures and the associated high computational costs. This study introduces a homogenization method to achieve cross-scale modeling of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) layers, accounting for both lay-up sequence and in-plane FW diamond-shaped form. The stacking sequence in an FW Type IV composite pressure vessel is numerically investigated through ply modeling and cross-scale homogenization. The composite tank structure, featuring a polyamide PA66 liner, is designed for a working pressure of 70 MPa and comprises 12 helical winding layers and 17 hoop winding layers. An FW cross-undulation representative volume element (RVE) is developed based on actual in-plane mesostructures, suggesting an equivalent laminate RVE effective elastic modulus. Furthermore, six different lay-up sequences are numerically compared using ply models and fully and partially homogenized models. The structural displacements in both radial and axial directions are validated across all modeling approaches. The partial homogenization method successfully captures the detailed fiber-direction stress distribution in the innermost two hoop or helical layers. By applying the Hashin tensile failure criterion, the burst pressure of the composite tank is evaluated, revealing 7.56% deviation between the partial homogenization model and the ply model. Fatigue life analysis of the Type IV composite pressure vessel is conducted using ABAQUS® coupled with FE-SAFE, incorporating an S-N curve for polyamide PA66. The results indicate that the fatigue cycles of the liner exhibit only 0.28% variation across different stacking sequences, demonstrating that homogenization has a negligible impact on liner lifecycle predictions. The proposed cross-scale modeling framework offers an effective approach for multiscale simulation of FW composite pressure vessels, balancing computational efficiency with accuracy. Full article

Dynamic behavior of coaxial axisymmetric planar cracks in the transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) material in transient in-plane magneto-electro-mechanical loading is studied. Magneto-electrically impermeable as well as permeable cracks are assumed for crack surfaces. In the first step, considering prismatic and radial dynamic dislocations, electric and magnetic jumps are obtained through Laplace and Hankel transforms. These solutions are utilized to derive singular integral equations in the Laplace domain for the axisymmetric penny-shaped and annular cracks. Derived Cauchy singular type integral equations are solved to obtain the density of dislocation on the crack surfaces. Dislocation densities are utilized in computation of the dynamic stress intensity factors, electric displacement, and magnetic induction in the vicinity tips of crack tips. Finally, some numerical case studies of single and multiple cracks are presented. The effect of system parameters on the results is then discussed. Full article

The pursuit of compact and efficient fusion energy systems necessitates innovative structural concepts capable of withstanding extreme operational conditions. This study presents a preliminary structural evaluation and stress assessment of a bucked-and-wedged configuration for the EU DEMO tokamak, targeting a peak magnetic field of 16.5 T. The proposed concept leverages mutual wedging of the Toroidal Field (TF) coils and their interaction with the Central Solenoid (CS) to optimize stress distribution in the inner legs, a critical region in high-field fusion reactors. To address the significant tangential forces arising during plasma operation, the design integrates outer inter-coil structures and shear pins to enhance mechanical stability. A hybrid simulation approach—coupling 3D electromagnetic and structural finite element analyses—is employed to assess stress behavior and structural integrity under both in-plane and out-of-plane loading conditions. The results contribute to the optimization study of high-field fusion reactor components and offer insights into viable mechanical design strategies for next-generation nuclear energy systems. Polarization information is essential for material identification, stress mapping, biological imaging, and robust vision under strong illumination, yet conventional approaches rely on external polarization optics and active biasing, which are bulky, alignment-sensitive, and power-hungry. A more desirable route is to encode polarization at the pixel level and read it out at zero bias, enabling compact, low-noise, and polarization imaging. Low-symmetry layered semiconductors provide persistent in-plane anisotropy as a materials basis for polarization selectivity. Here, we construct an eight-terminal radial ‘star-shaped’ Au/ReS2 metal-semiconductor junction array pixel that operates in a genuine photovoltaic mode under zero external bias based on the photothermoelectric effect. Based on this, electrical summation of phase-matched multi-junction channels increases the signal amplitude approximately linearly without sacrificing the two-lobed modulation depth, achieving ‘gain by stacking’ without external amplification. The device exhibits millisecond-scale transient response and robust cycling stability and, as a minimal pixel unit, realizes polarization-resolved imaging and pattern recognition. Treating linear combinations of channels as operators in the polarization domain, these results provide a general pixel-level foundation for compact, zero-bias, and scalable polarization cameras and on-pixel computational sensing. This work aims to investigate the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of wood-based sandwich structures with and without a manufacturing defect, under compressive loading. The specimens were made by gluing birch veneers to a balsa wood core. The defect consisted of a central zone where glue was lacking between the skin and the core. A compression load was applied to the plate using the VERTEX test rig, with the plate placed on the upper surface of a rectangular box and bolted at its borders. The upper surface of the plate was monitored using optical and infrared cameras. The stereo digital image correlation method was used to capture the in-plane and out-of-plane deformations of the specimen, and to calculate the strains and stresses. The infrared camera enabled the failure scenario to be identified. The buckling behaviour of pristine specimens showed small local debonding in the post-buckling range, which was not detrimental to overall performance. In the presence of a manufacturing defect, the decrease in buckling load was only about 15%, but final failure occurred at lower compressive loads. Full article

This study presents a novel analytical–numerical framework for investigating the torsional divergence of composite sandwich structures composed of carbon fiber-reinforced skins and an AIREX foam core. A divergence differential equation is derived and modified to accommodate the anisotropic behavior of composite materials through an equivalent shear modulus, extending classical formulations originally developed for isotropic structures. The resulting equation is solved using the Galerkin method, yielding structural section rotations as a continuous function along the wing span. These torsional modes are then applied as boundary inputs in a high-fidelity finite element model of the composite fin to determine stress distributions across the structure. The method enables evaluation of not only in-plane (membrane) stresses, but also out-of-plane responses such as interlaminar stresses and local core-skin interactions critical for assessing failure modes in sandwich composites. This integrated workflow links analytical aeroelastic modeling with detailed structural analysis, offering valuable insights into the interplay between global torsional stability and local stress behavior in laminated composite systems. This study investigates the elastoplastic behavior of phenol formaldehyde/polyvinyl butyral matrix (70% PF/30% PVB) reinforced with Kevlar® fibers through comprehensive in-plane tensile testing. Cyclic loading–unloading tests were conducted at a 100%/min strain rate using a universal testing system at room temperature on 04, 904, and ±45s laminates. The experimental results revealed significant nonlinear hardening behavior beyond yield stress, accompanied by yarn stiffening effects during loading cycles. A novel elastoplastic constitutive model was developed, incorporating Hill’s yield criterion adapted for orthotropic materials and an isotropic hardening function that accounts for equivalent plastic strains and progressive yarn stiffening. Laminates with other stacking sequences were also tested and the accuracy of the predictions of the nonlinear behavior was assessed. In these laminates, delaminations took place and the model provided an overestimation of the stress–strain response. Since the model could not predict delamination onset and propagation, an adaptation of the model considering fully delaminated interfaces brought a lower bound of this response. Despite the limitations of the model, it can be used to provide reasonable limits to the stress–strain response of laminates accounting for plastic strains within plies. This study provides essential mechanical properties and constitutive relationships for designing Kevlar® composite structures with tailored stiffness characteristics for impact-resistant applications. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) offer excellent in-plane mechanical performance, but their relatively low interlaminar fracture toughness makes them vulnerable to delamination, particularly around intralaminar discontinuities such as resin-rich regions or fiber gaps. This study investigates the effectiveness of polyamide (PA) mesh inserts in improving interlaminar toughness and suppressing delamination in CFRP laminates with such features. Two PA mesh configurations were evaluated: a fully embedded continuous layer and a 20 mm cut mesh strip placed between continuous and discontinuous plies near critical regions. Fracture toughness tests showed that PA mesh insertion improved interlaminar toughness approximately 2.4-fold compared to neat CFRP, primarily due to a mechanical interlocking mechanism that disrupts crack propagation and enhances energy dissipation. Uniaxial tensile tests with digital image correlation revealed that while initial matrix cracking occurred at similar stress levels, the stress at which complete delamination occurred was approximately 60% higher in specimens with a 20 mm mesh and up to 92% higher in specimens with fully embedded mesh. The fully embedded mesh provided consistent delamination resistance across the laminate, while the 20 mm insert localized strain redistribution and preserved global mechanical performance. These findings demonstrate that PA mesh is an effective interleaving material for enhancing damage tolerance in CFRP laminates with internal discontinuities. Full article

The present paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) spherical shell model for the magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) free vibration analysis of simply supported multilayered smart shells. A mixed curvilinear orthogonal reference system is used to write the unified 3D governing equations for cylinders, cylindrical panels and spherical shells. The closed-form solution of the problem is performed considering Navier harmonic forms in the in-plane directions and the exponential matrix method in the thickness direction. A layerwise approach is possible, considering the interlaminar continuity conditions for displacements, electric and magnetic potentials, transverse shear/normal stresses, transverse normal magnetic induction and transverse normal electric displacement. Some preliminary cases are proposed to validate the present 3D MEE free vibration model for several curvatures, materials, thickness values and vibration modes. Then, new benchmarks are proposed in order to discuss possible effects in multilayered MEE curved smart structures. In the new benchmarks, first, three circular frequencies for several half-wave number couples and for different thickness ratios are proposed. Thickness vibration modes are shown in terms of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and magnetic induction along the thickness direction. These new benchmarks are useful to understand the free vibration behavior of MEE curved smart structures, and they can be used as reference for researchers interested in the development of of 2D/3D MEE models. The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone. Headless compression screws became the gold standard for fixation, but the ideal screw diameter remains debated. This study investigates the relative benefit of using a larger screw diameter to improve stability in typical scaphoid fractures. It also examines the effects of preload and screw length on mechanical behaviour. A finite element (FE) model of a mid-waist scaphoid fracture was created. Screws from Medartis (1.7 mm, 2.2 mm, and 3.0 mm diameter; 23 mm length) were placed along the longitudinal axis. Boundary and loading conditions matched prior studies. Interfragmentary displacement (IFD) and von Mises stress were compared across screw sizes. The effects of screw length and preload were also evaluated. Maximum in-plane IFD was 2.08 mm (1.7 mm screw), 0.53 mm (2.2 mm), and 0.27 mm (3.0 mm). The 1.7 mm screw exceeded the scaphoid’s average ultimate stress (60.51 MPa). Increasing preload reduced IFD, especially above 60 N. Screws longer than 1.5 times the mid-waist diameter offered no added benefit. Larger screws provide better biomechanical fracture stability. However, the gain from 2.2 mm to 3.0 mm is minor, while 1.7 mm screws lack sufficient strength. The 2.2 mm screw offers a good balance of stability and bone preservation, making it the preferred choice. Full article

When subjected to in-plane compressive loads, these structures may experience buckling. In some applications, perforations are introduced, altering membrane stress distribution and buckling behavior. This study investigates the elasto-plastic buckling behavior of perforated plates using the Finite Element Method (FEM), Constructal Design (CD), and Exhaustive Search (ES) techniques. Simply supported thin rectangular plates with central elliptical perforations were analyzed under biaxial elasto-plastic buckling. Three shapes of holes were considered—circular, horizontal elliptical, and vertical elliptical—along with sixteen aspect ratios and two different materials. Results showed that higher yield stress leads to higher ultimate stress for perforated plates. Regardless of material, plates exhibited a similar trend: ultimate stress decreased as the aspect ratio dropped from 1.00 to around 0.40 and then increased from 0.35 to 0.25. A similar pattern was observed in the stress components along both horizontal (x) and vertical (y) directions, once the y-component became considerably higher than the x-component for the same range of 0.40 to 0.25. For longer plates, in general, the vertical elliptical hole brings more benefits in structural terms, due to the facility in the distribution of y-components of stress. Full article

A fabric orientation angle has a significant influence on the failure mechanisms at the lamina level. Any change in this angle can lead to a sudden reduction in strength, potentially resulting in catastrophic failures due to variations in load-carrying capacity. This study examined the impact of off-axis fabric orientation angles (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) on the flexural properties of non-crimp basalt-fibre-reinforced acrylic thermoplastic composites. The basalt/Elium® composite panels were manufactured using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding technique. The results show that the on-axis (0°) composite specimens exhibited linear stress–strain behaviour and quasi-brittle failure characterised by fibre dominance, achieving superior strength and failure strain values of 1128 MPa and 3.85%, respectively. In contrast, the off-axis specimens exhibited highly nonlinear ductile behaviour. They failed at lower load values due to matrix dominance, with strength and failure strain values of 144 MPa and 6.0%, respectively, observed at a fabric orientation angle of 45°. The in-plane shear stress associated with off-axis angles influenced the flexural properties. Additionally, the degree of deformation and the fracture mechanisms were analysed. Full article

Despite the promising electronic properties of graphene, its lack of an intrinsic bandgap limits its applicability in semiconductor technologies. This has catalyzed the investigation of newly developed two-dimensional carbon materials, including tetragraphene (TG), a quasi-2D semiconducting material featuring a combination of hexagonal and tetragonal rings. This study aims to investigate the mechanical and fracture behaviors of TG using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, studying two distinct atomic configurations of tetragraphene. DFT simulations assess the mechanical properties, while MD simulations explore the fracture dynamics subjected to mixed mode I (opening mode) and mode II (in-plane shear mode) loading. Our analysis focuses on the influence of loading phase angle, crack edge chirality, crack tip configuration, and temperature on crack propagation paths and critical stress intensity factors (SIFs) in TG structures. Our results show that the critical SIF varies by 12.5–21% depending on the crack chirality. Across all loading conditions, increasing the temperature ranging from 300 K to 2000 K reduces the critical SIF by 10–45%, with the largest reductions observed under pure mode I loading. These outcomes offer important insights into the structural integrity of TG and inform its potential integration into flexible nanoelectronic devices, where mechanical reliability is essential.
