Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women world-wide, and early screening is critical for improving patient survival. Medical imaging plays a central role in breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring. However, conventional imaging modalities—including mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging—face limitations such as low diagnostic specificity, relatively slow imaging speed, ionizing radiation exposure, and dependence on exogenous contrast agents. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI), a novel hybrid imaging technique that combines optical contrast with ultrasonic spatial resolution, has shown great promise in addressing these challenges. By revealing anatomical, functional, and molecular features of the breast tumor microenvironment, PAI offers high spatial resolution, rapid imaging, and minimal operator dependence. This review outlines the fundamental principles of PAI and systematically examines recent advances in its application to breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and therapeutic evaluation. Furthermore, we discuss the translational potential of PAI as an emerging breast imaging modality, complementing existing clinical techniques. Full article

During unmanned drilling operations, the velocity of drill cuttings serves as an important indicator of drilling conditions, which necessitates real-time and accurate measurements. To address challenges such as the small size of cuttings, weak feature representations, and complex motion trajectories, we propose a novel velocity measurement method integrating small-object detection and tracking. Specifically, we enhance the multi-scale feature fusion capability of the YOLOv11 detection head by incorporating a lightweight feature extraction module, Ghost Conv, and a feature-aligned fusion module, FA-Concat, resulting in an improved model named YOLOv11-Dd (drilling debris). Furthermore, considering the robustness of the ByteTrack algorithm in retaining low-confidence targets and handling occlusions, we integrate ByteTrack into the tracking phase to enhance tracking stability. A velocity estimation module is introduced to achieve high-precision measurement by mapping the pixel displacement of detection box centers across consecutive frames to physical space. To facilitate model training and performance evaluation, we establish a drill-cutting splash simulation dataset comprising 3787 images, covering a diverse range of ejection angles, velocities, and material types. The experimental results show that the YOLOv11-Dd model achieves a 4.65% improvement in mAP@80 over YOLOv11, reaching 76.04%. For mAP@75–95, it improves by 0.79%, reaching 41.73%. The proposed velocity estimation method achieves an average accuracy of 92.12% in speed measurement tasks, representing a 0.42% improvement compared to the original YOLOv11. Full article

In order to achieve 0.1 m resolution and fully polarimetric observation capabilities for airborne SAR systems, the adoption of stepped-frequency modulation waveform combined with the polarization time-division transmit/receive (T/R) technique proves to be an effective technical approach. Considering the issue of range resolution degradation and paired echoes caused by multichannel amplitude–phase mismatch in fully polarimetric airborne SAR with 0.1 m resolution, an amplitude–phase error estimation algorithm based on echo data is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the subband amplitude spectrum correction curve is obtained by the statistical average of the subband amplitude spectrum. Secondly, the paired-echo broadening function is obtained by selecting high-quality sample points after single-band imaging and the nonlinear phase error within the subbands is estimated via Sinusoidal Frequency Modulation Fourier Transform (SMFT). Thirdly, based on the minimum entropy criterion of the synthesized compressed pulse image, residual linear phase errors between subbands are quickly acquired. Finally, two-dimensional cross-correlation of the image slice is utilized to estimate the positional deviation between polarization channels. This method only requires high-quality data samples from the echo data, then rapidly estimates both intra-band and inter-band amplitude/phase errors by using SMFT and the minimum entropy criterion, respectively, with the characteristics of low computational complexity and fast convergence speed. The effectiveness of this method is verified by the imaging results of the experimental data. Full article

Target detection is essential in intelligent transportation and autonomous control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with single-stage detection algorithms used widely due to their speed. However, these algorithms face limitations in detecting small targets, especially in aerial photography from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where small targets are often occluded, multi-scale semantic information is easily lost, and there is a trade-off between real-time processing and computational resources. Existing algorithms struggle to effectively extract multi-dimensional features and deep semantic information from images and to balance detection accuracy with model complexity. To address these limitations, we developed FFG-YOLO, a lightweight small-target detection method for UAVs based on YOLOv8. FFG-YOLO incorporates three modules: a feature enhancement block (FEB), a feature concat block (FCB), and a global context awareness block (GCAB). These modules strengthen feature extraction from small targets, resolve semantic bias in multi-scale feature fusion, and help differentiate small targets from complex backgrounds. We also improved the positioning accuracy of small targets using the Wasserstein distance loss function. Experiments showed that FFG-YOLO outperformed other algorithms, including YOLOv8n, in small-target detection due to its lightweight nature, meeting the stringent real-time performance and deployment requirements of UAVs. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing offers mask-free, high-resolution deposition across a broad range of ink viscosities, yet combining void-free filling of high-aspect-ratio through-glass vias (TGVs) with ultrafine drop-on-demand (DOD) line printing on the same platform requires balancing conflicting requirements: for example, high field strengths to drive ink into deep and narrow vias; sufficiently high ink viscosity to prevent gravity-induced leakage; and stable meniscus dynamics to avoid satellite droplets and charge accumulation on the glass surface. By coupling electrostatic field analysis with transient level-set simulations, we establish a dimensionless regime map that delineates stable cone-jetting regime; these predictions are validated by high-speed imaging and surface profilometry. Operating within this window, the platform achieves complete, void-free filling of 200 µm × 1.52 mm TGVs and continuous 10 µm-wide traces in a single print pass. Demonstrating its capabilities, we fabricate transparent Ku-band substrate-integrated waveguide antennas on borosilicate glass: the printed vias and arc feed elements exhibit a reflection coefficient minimum of −18 dB at 14.2 GHz, a −10 dB bandwidth of 12.8–16.2 GHz, and an 8 dBi peak gain with 37° beam tilt, closely matching full-wave predictions. This physics-driven, all-in-one EHD approach provides a scalable route to high-performance, glass-integrated RF devices and transparent electronics. Full article

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has evolved from a breakthrough ophthalmologic imaging tool into a cornerstone technology in interventional cardiology. After its initial applications in retinal imaging in the early 1990s, OCT was subsequently envisioned for cardiovascular use. In 1995, its ability to visualize atherosclerotic plaques was demonstrated in an in vitro study, and the following year marked the acquisition of the first in vivo OCT image of a human coronary artery. A major milestone followed in 2000, with the first intracoronary imaging in a living patient using time-domain OCT. However, the real inflection point came in 2006 with the advent of frequency-domain OCT, which dramatically improved acquisition speed and image quality, enabling safe and routine imaging in the catheterization lab. With the advent of high-resolution, second-generation frequency-domain systems, OCT has become clinically practical and widely adopted in catheterization laboratories. OCT progressively entered interventional cardiology, first proving its safety and feasibility, then demonstrating superiority over angiography alone in guiding percutaneous coronary interventions and improving outcomes. Today, it plays a central role not only in clinical practice but also in cardiovascular research, enabling precise assessment of plaque biology and response to therapy. With the advent of artificial intelligence and hybrid imaging systems, OCT is now evolving into a true precision-medicine tool—one that not only guides today’s therapies but also opens new frontiers for discovery, with vast potential still waiting to be explored. Tracing its historical evolution from ophthalmology to cardiology, this narrative review highlights the key technological milestones, clinical insights, and future perspectives that position OCT as an indispensable modality in contemporary interventional cardiology. As a guiding thread, the myth of Prometheus is used to symbolize the evolution of OCT—from its illuminating beginnings in ophthalmology to its transformative role in cardiology—as a metaphor for how light, innovation, and knowledge can reveal what was once hidden and redefine clinical practice. Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. Image processing has been widely adopted as an effective technology for analyzing weld forming quality which is greatly affected by the welding process parameters. In this paper, an L25(53) orthogonal experiment is designed to investigate the effects of welding process parameters on the weld forming quality in laser welding of aluminum alloy. The weld characteristics including the weld width (WW), weld penetration (PD), weld area (WA) and weld porosity (WP) under the conditions of the different welding process parameters consisting of the laser power (LP), welding speed (WS) and defocus distance (DD) are extracted from the laser welding experiment based on image processing. The effectiveness of the weld characteristics extraction method is verified by comparing the extracted results with the measured results. It is found that the WW, PD and WA are all significantly influenced by the LP among the three welding process parameters while the influences of the three process parameters on the WP are insignificant. The DD has a significant influence on the PD and the WS has a significant influence on the WA. The corresponding significance of influence is lower than the significance of influence of LP. The analysis results are conducive to the optimization of laser welding process parameters and improvement of welding quality. Full article

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as an active microwave imaging system, has the capability of all-weather and all-time observation. In response to the challenges of aircraft detection in SAR images due to the complex background interference caused by the continuous scattering of airport buildings and the demand for real-time processing, this paper proposes a YOLOv7-MTI recognition model that combines the attention mechanism and involution. By integrating the MTCN module and involution, performance is enhanced. The Multi-TASP-Conv network (MTCN) module aims to effectively extract low-level semantic and spatial information using a shared lightweight attention gate structure to achieve cross-dimensional interaction between “channels and space” with very few parameters, capturing the dependencies among multiple dimensions and improving feature representation ability. Involution helps the model adaptively adjust the weights of spatial positions through dynamic parameterized convolution kernels, strengthening the discrete strong scattering points specific to aircraft and suppressing the continuous scattering of the background, thereby alleviating the interference of complex backgrounds. Experiments on the SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 dataset, which includes seven categories such as A220, A320/321, A330, ARJ21, Boeing737, Boeing787, and others, show that the mAP and mRecall of YOLOv7-MTI reach 93.51% and 96.45%, respectively, outperforming Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Compared with the basic YOLOv7, mAP is improved by 1.47%, mRecall by 1.64%, and FPS by 8.27%, achieving an effective balance between accuracy and speed, providing research ideas for SAR aircraft recognition. In a variety of UAV applications, visual–inertial navigation systems (VINSs) play a crucial role in providing accurate positioning and navigation solutions. However, traditional VINS struggle to adapt flexibly to varying environmental conditions due to fixed covariance matrix settings. This limitation becomes especially acute during high-speed drone operations, where motion blur and fluctuating image clarity can significantly compromise navigation accuracy and system robustness. To address these issues, we propose an innovative adaptive covariance matrix estimation method for UAV-based VINS using Gaussian formulas. Our approach enhances the accuracy and robustness of the navigation system by dynamically adjusting the covariance matrix according to the quality of the images. Leveraging the advanced Laplacian operator, detailed assessments of image blur are performed, thereby achieving precise perception of image quality. Based on these assessments, a novel mechanism is introduced for dynamically adjusting the visual covariance matrix using a Gaussian model according to the clarity of images in the current environment. Extensive simulation experiments across the EuRoC and TUM VI datasets, as well as the field tests, have validated our method, demonstrating significant improvements in navigation accuracy of drones in scenarios with motion blur. Our algorithm has shown significantly higher accuracy compared to the famous VINS-Mono framework, outperforming it by 18.18% on average, as well as the optimization rate of RMS, which reaches 65.66% for the F1 dataset and 41.74% for F2 in the field tests outdoors. Comparative Analysis of Fully Floating and Semi-Floating Ring Bearings in High-Speed Turbocharger Rotordynamics

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

The conductors of high-speed railway OCSs (Overhead Contact Systems) are susceptible to conductor galloping due to the impact of natural elements such as strong winds, rain, and snow, resulting in conductor fatigue damage and significantly compromising train operational safety. Consequently, monitoring the galloping status of conductors is crucial, and instance segmentation techniques, by delineating the pixel-level contours of each conductor, can significantly aid in the identification and study of galloping phenomena. This work expands upon the YOLO11-seg model and introduces an instance segmentation approach for galloping video and image sensor data of OCS conductors. The algorithm, designed for the stripe-like distribution of OCS conductors in the data, employs four-direction Sobel filters to extract edge features in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal orientations. These features are subsequently integrated with the original convolutional branch to form the FDSE (Four Direction Sobel Enhancement) module. It integrates the ECA (Efficient Channel Attention) mechanism for the adaptive augmentation of conductor characteristics and utilizes the FL (Focal Loss) function to mitigate the class-imbalance issue between positive and negative samples, hence enhancing the model’s sensitivity to conductors. Consequently, segmentation outcomes from neighboring frames are utilized, and mask-difference analysis is performed to autonomously detect conductor galloping locations, emphasizing their contours for the clear depiction of galloping characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced YOLO11-seg model achieves 85.38% precision, 77.30% recall, 84.25% AP@0.5, 81.14% F1-score, and a real-time processing speed of 44.78 FPS. When combined with the galloping visualization module, it can issue real-time alerts of conductor galloping anomalies, providing robust technical support for railway OCS safety monitoring. Background: Retinal diseases are becoming an important public health issue, with early diagnosis and timely intervention playing a key role in preventing vision loss. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) remains the leading non-invasive imaging technique for identifying retinal conditions. However, distinguishing between diabetic macular edema (DME) and macular edema resulting from retinal vein occlusion (RVO) can be particularly challenging, especially for clinicians without specialized training in retinal disorders, as both conditions manifest through increased retinal thickness. Due to the limited research exploring the application of deep learning methods, particularly for RVO detection using OCT scans, this study proposes a novel diagnostic approach based on stacked convolutional neural networks. This architecture aims to enhance classification accuracy by integrating multiple neural network layers, enabling more robust feature extraction and improved differentiation between retinal pathologies. Methods: The VGG-16, VGG-19, and ResNet50 models were fine-tuned using the Kermany dataset to classify the OCT images and afterwards were trained using a private OCT dataset. Four stacked models were then developed using these models: a model using the VGG-16 and VGG-19 networks, a model using the VGG-16 and ResNet50 networks, a model using the VGG-19 and ResNet50 models, and finally a model using all three networks. The performance metrics of the model includes accuracy, precision, recall, F2-score, and area under of the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Results: The stacked neural network using all three models achieved the best results, having an accuracy of 90.7%, precision of 99.2%, a recall of 90.7%, and an F2-score of 92.3%. Conclusions: This study presents a novel method for distinguishing retinal disease by using stacked neural networks. This research aims to provide a reliable tool for ophthalmologists to improve diagnosis accuracy and speed. Full article

This study investigates the capillary performance and wetting behavior of SLA (Stereolithography) 3D-printed porous structures, focusing on TPMS (triply periodic minimal surfaces)-Gyroid, Octet, Diamond, and Isotruss lattice designs. High-speed imaging was used to analyze droplet interactions, including penetration, spreading, and contact angles, with 16 μL water droplets dropping from 30 mm at 0.77 m/s. Results showed variable contact angles, with Isotruss and Octet having higher angles, while Diamond faced measurement challenges due to surface roughness. Numerical simulations of TPMS-Gyroid of 2 mm3 unit cells validated the experimental results, and Diamond, Octet, and Isotruss structures were simulated. Capillary performance was assessed through deionized (DI) water weight–time (w-t) measurements, identifying that the TPMS-Gyroid structure performed adequately. Structures with 4 mm3 unit cells had low capillary performance, excluding them from permeability testing, whereas smaller 2 mm3 structures demonstrated capillary effects but had printability and cleaning issues. Permeability results indicated that Octet performed best, followed by Isotruss, Diamond, and TPMS-Gyroid. Findings emphasize unit cell size, beam thickness, and droplet positioning as key factors in optimizing fluid dynamics for cooling, filtration, and fluid management. Full article

LGM-YOLO: A Context-Aware Multi-Scale YOLO-Based Network for Automated Structural Defect Detection

Ensuring the structural safety of steel trusses in escalators is critical for the reliable operation of vertical transportation systems. While manual inspection remains widely used, its dependence on human judgment leads to extended cycle times and variable defect-recognition rates, making it less reliable for identifying subtle surface imperfections. To address these limitations, a novel context-aware, multi-scale deep learning framework based on the YOLOv5 architecture is proposed, which is specifically designed for automated structural defect detection in escalator steel trusses. Firstly, a method called GIES is proposed to synthesize pseudo-multi-channel representations from single-channel grayscale images, which enhances the network’s channel-wise representation and mitigates issues arising from image noise and defocused blur. To further improve detection performance, a context enhancement pipeline is developed, consisting of a local feature module (LFM) for capturing fine-grained surface details and a global context module (GCM) for modeling large-scale structural deformations. In addition, a multi-scale feature fusion module (MSFM) is employed to effectively integrate spatial features across various resolutions, enabling the detection of defects with diverse sizes and complexities. Comprehensive testing on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET datasets reveals that the proposed method achieves 79.8% mAP on NEU-DET and 68.1% mAP on GC10-DET, outperforming the baseline YOLOv5s by 8.0% and 2.7%, respectively. Although challenges remain in identifying extremely fine defects such as crazing, the proposed approach offers improved accuracy while maintaining real-time inference speed. These results indicate the potential of the method for intelligent visual inspection in structural health monitoring and industrial safety applications. Full article
