Efficient and clean utilization remains a pivotal development focus within the coal industry. Nevertheless, the application of weakly caking coal results in energy loss due to the caking property, thereby leading to a waste of resources. This paper, therefore, concentrates on the caking property, offering insights into the relevant caking mechanism, evaluation indexes, and regulation technologies associated with it. The caking mechanism delineates the transformation process of coal into coke. During pyrolysis, the active component generates the plastic mass in which gas, liquid, and solid phases coexist. With an increase in temperature, the liquid phase is diminished gradually, causing the inert components to bond. Based on the caking mechanism, evaluation indexes such as that characteristic of char residue, the caking index, and the maximal thickness of the plastic layer are proposed. These indexes are used to distinguish the strength of the caking property. However, they frequently exhibit a poor differentiation ability and high subjectivity. Additionally, some technologies have been demonstrated to regulate the caking property. Technologies such as rapid heating treatment and hydrogenation modification increase the amount of plastic mass generated, thereby improving the caking property. Meanwhile, technologies such as mechanical breaking and pre-oxidation reduce the caking property by destroying agglomerates or consuming plastic mass. Full article

Hydrogen Bond-Regulated Rapid Prototyping and Performance Optimization of Polyvinyl Alcohol–Tannic Acid Hydrogels

Traditional hydrogel preparation methods typically require multiple steps and certain external stimuli. In this study, rapid and stable gelation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-tannic acid (TA)-based hydrogels was achieved through the regulation of hydrogen bonds. The cross-linking between PVA and TA is triggered by the evaporation of ethanol. Rheological testing and analysis of the liquid-solid transformation process of the hydrogel were performed. The gelation onset time (GOT) could be tuned from 10 s to over 100 s by adjusting the ethanol content and temperature. The addition of polyhydroxyl components (e.g., glycerol) significantly enhances the hydrogel’s water retention capacity (by 858%) and tensile strain rate (by 723%), while concurrently increasing the gelation time. Further studies have shown that the addition of alkaline substances (such as sodium hydroxide) promotes the entanglement of PVA molecular chains, increasing the tensile strength by 23% and the fracture strain by 41.8%. The experimental results indicate that the optimized PVA-TA hydrogels exhibit a high tensile strength (>2 MPa) and excellent tensile properties (~600%). Moreover, the addition of an excess of weakly alkaline substances (such as sodium acetate) reduces the degree of hydrolysis of PVA, enabling the system to form a hydrogel with extrudable characteristics before the ethanol has completely evaporated. This property allows for patterned printing and thus demonstrates the potential of the hydrogel in 3D printing. Overall, this study provides new insights for the application of PVA-TA based hydrogels in the fields of rapid prototyping and strength optimization. Full article

Freshwater surimi typically exhibits poor gel-forming capability and is prone to gel deterioration, limiting its applications in food products. This study successfully prepared silver carp surimi gels with improved gel strength and water-holding capacity (WHC) using carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CKGM) as a functional modifier. Furthermore, the regulatory mechanism of CKGM with different degrees of substitution (DS) on the gel properties of silver carp surimi was systematically investigated. Results demonstrated that DS significantly influenced gel strength, WHC, and microstructure. CKGM (DS = 0.21%) substantially enhanced the gel strength and WHC through strengthened hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen-bond networks. However, CKGM with a higher DS (0.41%) induced a steric hindrance effect, decreasing elastic modulus and WHC and resulting in a more porous gel network. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that CKGM facilitated the conformational transition of myofibrillar proteins from α-helix to β-sheet, thereby improving the density of the gel network. The study provides theoretical foundations and technical guidance for the quality improvement of surimi products. Full article

Plasma-activated water (PAW), enriched with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), presents oxidative and antimicrobial characteristics with potential in cosmetic applications. This study examined the effects of two PAW formulations—nitrate-rich (PAW-N) and peroxide-rich (PAW-P)—on human hair types classified as straight (Type 1), wavy (Type 2), and coily/kinky (Type 4). The impact of PAW on hair structure and chemistry was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV–Vis spectrophotometry, and physicochemical analyses of the liquids (pH, ORP, conductivity, and TDS). PAW-N, with high nitrate content (~500 mg/L), low pH (2.15), and elevated conductivity (6244 µS/cm), induced significant damage to porous hair types, including disulfide bond cleavage, protein oxidation, and lipid degradation, as indicated by FTIR and EDS data. SEM confirmed severe cuticle disruption. In contrast, PAW-P, containing >25 mg/L of hydrogen peroxide and exhibiting milder acidity and lower ionic strength, caused more localized and controlled oxidation with minimal morphological damage. Straight hair showed greater resistance to both treatments, while coily and wavy hair were more susceptible, particularly to PAW-N. These findings suggest that the formulation and ionic profile of PAW should be matched to hair porosity for safe oxidative treatments, supporting the use of PAW-P as a gentler alternative in hair care technologies. Hydrogels, especially Polyvinyl alcohols, have received extensive attention as alternative materials for articular cartilage. Aiming at the problems such as low strength and poor toughness of polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels in practical applications, an enhancement and modification strategy is proposed. Sodium alginate fibers were introduced into polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel network through physical blending and freezing/thawing methods. The prepared composite hydrogels exhibited a three-dimensional porous network structure similar to that of human articular cartilage. The mechanical and tribological properties of hydrogels have been significantly improved, due to the multiple hydrogen bonding interaction between sodium alginate fibers and polyvinyl alcohol. Most importantly, under a load of 2 N, the friction coefficient of the PVA/0.4SA hydrogel can remain stable at 0.02 when lubricated in PBS buffer for 1 h. This work provides a novel design strategy for the development of high-performance polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels. Full article

This study explores the self-healing properties of polyurethane nanocomposites enhanced by multiple hydrogen bonds from ureido-pyrimidinone and the incorporation of 1–3 wt.% graphene nanoparticles, based on polyol α,ω-dihydroxy[oligo(butylene-ethylene adipate)]diol, which, according to our knowledge, has not been previously used in such systems. These new materials were synthesized via a two-step process and characterized by their thermal, mechanical, chemical, and self-healing properties. The mechanical analysis revealed that all nanocomposites exhibited high self-healing efficiencies (88–91%). The PU containing 2% graphene stands out as it exhibits the highest initial mechanical strength of ~5 MPa compared to approximately 2MP for a pristine PU while maintaining excellent self-healing efficiency (88%). A cut on the PU nanocomposite with 2% graphene can be completely healed after being heated at 80 °C for 1 h, which shows that it has a fast recovery time. Moreover, 3D printing was also successfully used to assess their processability and its effect on self-healing behavior. Three-dimensional printing did not negatively affect the material regeneration properties; thus, the material can be used in a variety of applications as expected in terms of dimensions and geometry. In Silico Characterization of Molecular Interactions of Aviation-Derived Pollutants with Human Proteins: Implications for Occupational and Public Health

Combustion of aviation jet fuel emits a complex mixture of pollutants linked to adverse health outcomes among airport personnel and nearby communities. While epidemiological studies showed the detrimental effects of aviation-derived air pollutants on human health, the molecular mechanisms of the interactions of these pollutants with cellular biomolecules like proteins that drive the adverse health effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed molecular docking simulations of 272 pollutant–protein complexes using AutoDock Vina 1.2.7 to characterize the binding strength of the pollutants with the selected proteins. We selected 34 aviation-derived pollutants that constitute three chemical categories of pollutants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). Each pollutant was docked to eight proteins that play critical roles in endocrine, metabolic, transport, and neurophysiological functions, where functional disruption is implicated in disease. The effect of binding of multiple pollutants was analyzed. Our results indicate that aliphatic and monoaromatic VOCs display low (<6 kcal/mol) binding affinities while PAHs and organophosphate esters exhibit strong (>7 kcal/mol) binding affinities. Furthermore, the binding strength of PAHs exhibits a positive correlation with the increasing number of aromatic rings in the pollutants, ranging from nearly 7 kcal/mol for two aromatic rings to more than 15 kcal/mol for five aromatic rings. Analysis of intermolecular interactions showed that these interactions are predominantly stabilized by hydrophobic, pi-stacking, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Simultaneous docking of multiple pollutants revealed the increased binding strength of the resulting complexes, highlighting the detrimental effect of exposure to pollutant mixtures found in ambient air near airports. We provide a priority list of pollutants that regulatory authorities can use to further develop targeted mitigation strategies to protect the vulnerable personnel and communities near airports. Construction wood has a high economic value, and its construction waste also has multiple consumption values. Natural wood has many advantages, such as thermal, environmental, and esthetic properties; however, wood sourced from artificial fast-growing forests is found to be deficient in mechanical strength. This shortcoming makes it less competitive in certain applications, leading many markets to remain dominated by non-renewable materials. To address this issue, various modification methods have been explored, with a focus on enhancing the plasticity and strength of wood. Studies have shown that hydrogen bonds in the internal structure of wood have a significant impact on its operational performance. Whether it is organic modification, inorganic modification, or a combination thereof, these methods will lead to a change in the shape of the hydrogen bond network between the components of the wood or will affect the process of its breaking and recombination, while increasing the formation of hydrogen bonds and related molecular synergistic effects and improving the overall operational performance of the wood. These modification methods not only increase productivity and meet the needs of efficient use and sustainable environmental protection but also elevate the wood industry to a higher level of technological advancement. This paper reviews the role of hydrogen bonding in wood modification, summarizes the mechanisms by which organic, inorganic, and composite modification methods regulate hydrogen bond networks, discusses their impacts on wood mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and environmental sustainability, and provides an important resource for future research and development. Surimi products are popular due to their high protein and low fat content. However, traditional processing methods rely on high concentrations of salt (2–3%) to maintain texture and stability, contributing to excessive sodium intake. As global health trends advance, developing green and low-salt technologies while maintaining product quality has become a research focus. Alkaline amino acids regulate protein conformation and intermolecular interactions through charge shielding, hydrogen bond topology, metal chelation, and hydration to compensate for the defects of solubility, gelation, and emulsification stability in the low-salt system. This article systematically reviews the mechanisms and applications of alkaline amino acids in reducing salt and maintaining quality in surimi. Research indicates that alkaline amino acids regulate the conformational changes of myofibrillar proteins through electrostatic shielding, hydrogen bond topology construction, and metal chelation, significantly improving gel strength, water retention, and emulsion stability in low-salt systems, with the results comparable to those in high-salt systems. Future research should optimize addition strategies using computational simulations technologies and establish a quality and safety evaluation system to promote industrial application. This review provides a theoretical basis for the green processing and functional enhancement of surimi products, which could have significant academic and industrial value. Full article

The increasing presence of ECs in aquatic environments has drawn significant attention to the need for innovative, accessible, and sustainable solutions in wastewater treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the use of agricultural residues—often discarded and undervalued—as raw materials for the development of efficient bioadsorbents. Based on a wide range of recent studies, this work presents various types of materials, such as rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and açaí seeds, that can be transformed through thermal and chemical treatments into advanced bioadsorbents capable of removing pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and in some cases, even addressing highly persistent pollutants such as PFASs. The main objectives of this review are to (1) assess agricultural-residue-derived bioadsorbents for the removal of ECs; (2) examine physical and chemical modification techniques that enhance adsorption performance; (3) evaluate their scalability and applicability in real-world treatment systems. The review also highlights key adsorption mechanisms—such as π–π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and ion exchange—alongside the influence of parameters like pH and ionic strength. The review also explores the kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic aspects of the adsorption processes, highlighting both the efficiency and reusability potential of these materials. This work uniquely integrates microwave-assisted pyrolysis, magnetic functionalization, and hybrid systems, offering a roadmap for sustainable water remediation. Finally, comparative performance analyses, applications using real wastewater, regeneration strategies, and the integration of these bioadsorbents into continuous treatment systems are presented, reinforcing their promising role in advancing sustainable water remediation technologies. Protein-polyphenol-based delivery vehicles are effective strategies for encapsulating bioactive compounds, thereby enhancing their solubility and bioaccessibility. In this study, dihydromyricetin/soy protein isolate (DHM/SPI) complexes were used as emulsifiers to prepare Pickering emulsions for DHM delivery. The results show that DHM and SPI form negatively charged complexes through hydrogen bonding, and the complex size decreases and stabilizes with increasing DHM addition. The size of the emulsion droplets was inversely related to the concentration of DHM addition (c), particle concentration (w), and ionic strength (i). Conversely, the increasing oil phase concentration (φ) was positively correlated with droplet size. The CLSM results confirmed the expected oil-in-water emulsion, while the rheological behavior of the Pickering emulsion highlighted its elastic, gel-like network structure and non-Newtonian fluid properties. Moreover, DHM effectively slowed lipid oxidation in the emulsion, and the bioaccessibility of DHM reached 33.51 ± 0.31% after in vitro simulated digestion. In conclusion, this emulsion system shows promising potential for delivering DHM and harnessing its bioactive effects. Full article

Biopolymers, owing to their environmentally friendly and sustainable characteristics, have become a promising alternative for soil stabilization in geotechnical engineering. The application of protein-based biopolymers as binders for soil stabilization is less prevalent in geotechnical engineering compared to polysaccharide-based biopolymers. This study explores the potential of gelatin, a protein-based biopolymer derived from animal collagen, for stabilizing silty sand and improving its geotechnical properties. Gelatin was mixed into the soil at concentrations ranging from 0.25% to 2% of the dry weight of soil, and its effects on various soil characteristics were evaluated. The tests conducted include liquid limit, plastic limit, compaction behavior, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS); the addition of 1% gelatin led to an approximate 1.69 times increase in the strength of the unamended soil. After 28 days of curing, the UCS improved by approximately 5.03 times compared to the untreated soil, and the treated soil exhibited increased resistance to deformation under load. Microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that gelatin facilitated the formation of a cohesive matrix, enhancing particle bonding and reducing void spaces within the soil. Carbon footprint analysis (CFA) conducted on an isolated footing stabilized with gelatin showed that the carbon emissions were reduced by 99.8% and 99% compared to traditional stabilizers such as lime and cement. Additionally, the interaction between the biopolymer and the fine-grained soil is distinctly evident in the FTIR and XRD analysis through hydrogen bonding and the formation of cementitious compounds. This study investigated the effects of curdlan (CUR) with different helical conformations on the gelling behavior and mechanisms of heat-induced soy protein isolate (SPI) gels. The results demonstrated that CUR significantly improved the functional properties of SPI gels, including water-holding capacity (0.31–5.06% increase), gel strength (7.01–240.51% enhancement), textural properties, viscoelasticity, and thermal stability. The incorporation of CUR facilitated the unfolding and cross-linking of SPI molecules, leading to enhanced network formation. Notably, SPI composite gels containing CUR with an ordered triple-helix bundled structure exhibited superior gelling performance compared to other helical conformations, characterized by a more compact and uniform microstructure. This improvement was attributed to stronger hydrogen bonding interactions between the triple-helix CUR and SPI molecules. Furthermore, the entanglement of triple-helix CUR with SPI promoted the formation of a denser and more homogeneous interpenetrating polymer network. These findings indicate that triple-helix CUR is highly effective in optimizing the gelling characteristics of heat-induced SPI gels. This study provides new insights into the structure–function relationship of CUR in SPI-based gel systems, offering potential strategies for designing high-performance protein–polysaccharide composite gels. The findings establish a theoretical foundation for applications in the food industry. Full article

Fish gelatin (FG) has garnered significant attention as an alternative to mammalian gelatin, primarily attributed to its distinct advantages. These include the absence of epidemic transmission risks and the lack of religious restrictions, making it a more universally acceptable and safer option. However, its application is limited due to shortcomings such as insufficient gel properties (such as rheological properties, gel strength, etc.). In this study, flaxseed gum (FFG) of 0–1.2% w/v was used to modify FG. The rheological properties, structural characteristics, and chemical bond changes of FG before and after modification were systematically analyzed using instruments such as a rheometer, infrared spectrometer, and Zeta potential analyzer. The results revealed that an appropriate amount of FFG could increase the gel strength of FG, but excessive FFG (>0.4%) reduced its gel strength. Moreover, FFG could increase the gelation transition temperature and apparent viscosity of the composite gel. FTIR confirmed that FFG and FG were bound through hydrogen bonding, β-sheet structure formation, and multi-electrolyte complexation. The ESEM showed that FFG promoted the formation of a denser network structure of FG. This study laid a theoretical foundation for the application and development of FG in the field of high-gel foods. Xanthan gum (XG) has potential application prospects as a biopolymer in soil reinforcement engineering. However, there remains a lack of relevant research on its influence on the mechanical properties, microscopic mechanism, and pH value changes in clay. In this study, the effects of different XG dosages (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) on the microscopic mechanism, pH value, and mechanical strength of clay at the 7-day curing age were investigated through tests including Zeta potential, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pH value, unconfined compressive strength, and triaxial shear strength. The results show that the addition of XG can not only promote charge exchange to generate hydrogen bonds and increase the bonding force between clays but can also form flocculent aggregates between the matrices, cementing the clay, filling the pores, and reducing the porosity of the samples. It can significantly increase the mechanical strength of the sample. When the content of XG is 20%, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and cohesion of the sample reach their maximum, increasing by 296% and 806%, respectively, compared with the reference group without XG. The conclusions drawn from this research can not only provide a theoretical reference for improving soft clay foundations but also expand the application research of XG in clay. Full article
