Background: Executive functions (EFs) are cognitive and emotional abilities that underpin goal-directed behavior, decision-making, and problem-solving. EFs can be categorized into two broad types, Hot EFs and Cool EFs, distinguished by their relation to emotional processing. Cool EFs are associated with cognitive control, while Hot EFs involve emotional regulation and decision-making in emotionally charged contexts. EFs contribute to self-regulation, including the ability to adjust behavior in response to feedback. Methods: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Hot (decision-making under uncertainty) and Cool (cognitive flexibility) EFs in middle childhood. To assess these dimensions of EFs, we used two tasks, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), completed by children (N = 90) aged 6–12 years. Results: Traditional WCST indices of cognitive flexibility were not associated with IGT performance. Using hierarchical linear regression models, the most significant overlap concerns the negative relationship between post-loss adjustment in the WCST (post-loss reaction time—plRT) and learning across the IGT (learning index—LI). Children who responded faster after negative feedback (plRT ↓) showed greater improvement in advantageous choice over the course of the task (LI ↑). Conclusions: The findings suggest that decision-making in the IGT is more closely linked to dynamic, process-based aspects of self-regulation than to static measures of cognitive flexibility. It can be concluded that the relationship between WCST and IGT during middle childhood is best described as weak, process-specific, and developmentally modulated, indicating that Cool and Hot EFs are partially distinct yet interconnected systems. Background/Objectives: Executive functions (EFs) and Theory of Mind (ToM) are often compromised in children with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). Although evidence highlights the malleability of EF, studies have yet to investigate whether school-based interventions can enhance both cool and hot EF domains and support ToM development in this population. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a structured, classroom-based EF training program in improving cool EF, hot EF, and ToM in children with SLD. Methods: Forty students with SLD (aged 8–10 years) were allocated to an intervention group (n = 24) or a passive control group (n = 16). The program was delivered in small groups during regular school hours over 6–9 weeks (18 sessions). Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured cool EFs (working memory, planning, cognitive flexibility, inhibition), hot EFs (affective decision-making, delay of gratification), and ToM (false belief understanding, mental state/emotion recognition). Results: The intervention group showed significant within-group improvements in working memory, planning, and cognitive flexibility, whereas the control group showed no significant changes. Between-group comparisons revealed significant effects for working memory, planning, and ToM mental state/emotion recognition, with medium-to-large effect sizes. No significant group differences were found for hot EFs or ToM false belief understanding. Conclusions: These findings suggest that participation in a structured, school-based EF program is associated with selective improvements in specific cool EF components and one aspect of ToM in children with SLD, supporting the potential value of classroom-based interventions for cognitive and socio-cognitive development. Background/Objectives: Executive functioning (EF) and prospective memory (PM) difficulties have been documented in adults with developmental dyslexia. However, research has tended to focus on university students with a formal diagnosis, overlooking adults who may experience symptoms of dyslexia without ever being formally diagnosed. The present online study aimed to investigate the effects of dyslexia traits on EF and PM in a larger, community-based sample by prioritising the use of self-report measures that include and differentiate between underexplored aspects of EF and PM in the dyslexia literature. Methods: One hundred and eighty adult volunteers of a wide range of ages were included in the final analysis. Participants completed four self-report questionnaires with good pedigrees assessing dyslexia traits and ADHD symptomatology, as well as everyday experiences of five distinct EFs, PM and PM strategies. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that, after controlling for age and ADHD symptomatology, more self-reported dyslexia traits were associated with more frequent EF problems overall and lower confidence in PM Abilities. Elevated dyslexia traits were significantly associated with self-reports of more difficulties with time-management, organisation and self-restraint, but not with more difficulties with motivation and regulation of emotion. No significant associations were found between dyslexia traits and the self-reported use of PM-enhancing strategies. Conclusions: The findings are considered in the light of potential metacognition deficits and theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Full article

Comparative studies using lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and the synthetic agonist, oleoyl-methoxy glycerophosphothionate (OMPT), in cells expressing the LPA3 receptor revealed differences in the action of these agents. The possibility that more than one recognition cavity might exist for these ligands in the LPA3 receptor was considered. We performed agonist docking studies exploring the whole protein to obtain tridimensional details of the ligand–receptor interaction. Functional in cellulo experiments using mutants were also executed. Our work includes blind docking using the unrefined and refined proteins subjected to hot spot predictions. Distinct ligand protonation (charge −1 and −2) states were evaluated. One LPA recognition cavity is located near the lower surface of the receptor close to the cytoplasm (Lower Cavity). OMPT displayed an affinity for an additional identification cavity detected in the transmembrane and extracellular regions (Upper Cavity). Docking targeted to Trp102 favored binding of both ligands in the transmembrane domain near the extracellular areas (Upper Cavity), but the associating amino acids were not identical due to close sub-cavities. A receptor model was generated using AlphaFold3, which properly identified the transmembrane regions of the sequence and co-modeled the lipid environment accordingly. These two models independently generated (with and without the membrane) and adopted essentially the same conformation, validating the data obtained. A DeepSite analysis of the model predicted two main binding pockets, providing additional confidence in the predicted ligand-binding regions and support for the relevance of the docking-based interaction models. In addition, mutagenesis was performed of the amino acids of the two detected cavities. In the in cellulo studies, LPA action was much less affected by the distinct mutations than that of OMPT (which was almost abolished). Therefore, docking and functional data indicate the presence of distinct agonist binding cavities in the LPA3 receptor. Full article

Executive functions are often impaired in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Understanding the impact of physical exercise on these cognitive domains is essential for developing effective interventions. The aim of this review is to assess the effect of physical exercise on executive functions in adults diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. A systematic search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO, initially from inception through January 2024, followed by an update through January 2025. Studies involved adults diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, employed physical exercise as an intervention, and measured executive functions as outcomes. The selection followed PRISMA guidelines, with inclusion determined by consensus among multiple reviewers. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were conducted independently by two reviewers using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool and GRADE approach for certainty of evidence. Meta-analyses were performed using random-effects models, with effect sizes (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) calculated for each outcome. From 1517 records, 9 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The analysis revealed a small but significant effect of physical exercise on working memory (ES = 0.300, 95% CI = 0.060–0.539, p = 0.014; I2 = 0.0%, Q = 2.2, p = 0.951) and a non-significant effect on emotion recognition (ES = 0.51, 95% CI = −0.291–1.303, p = 0.213; I2 = 83%), inhibition (ES = 0.156, 95% CI = −0.173 to 0.484, p = 0.353; I2 = 0.0%, Q = 1.1, p = 0.781), and cognitive flexibility (ES = 0.240, 95% CI = −0.270 to 0.749, 95% PI = −1.706 to 2.185; p = 0.356; I2 = 53.2%, Q = 3.0, p = 0.094). Physical exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, appears to have a small beneficial effect on working memory in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, the evidence for its effect on emotion recognition is less clear and may be influenced by the type of exercise, such as yoga. Further research is needed to provide more robust conclusions. Background: Schizotypal traits are notably prevalent among children diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Both conditions commonly exhibit impairments in executive functions (EF), which encompass cool and hot processes. The observed deficits in these EF domains across ASD and schizotypy underscore a compelling need to investigate how their co-occurrence impacts EF. Methods: This study investigated the impact of co-occurring autistic and schizotypal traits on EF in 63 children diagnosed with ASD, aged 7 to 12 years. Participants were assessed using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), the Melbourne Assessment of Schizotypy in Kids (MASK), and a battery of hot and cool EF tests. Results: Correlational analyses revealed a significant association between MASK score and working memory, as well as between ADOS scores and various cool EF components (i.e., working memory, inhibition and planning). Hierarchical regression analyses showed that the interaction between ADOS and MASK scores significantly predicted performance on hot EF (i.e., affective decision-making), but not on cool EF tasks. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the co-occurrence of ASD and schizotypal traits may have differential effects on cool and hot EF domains. Understanding how the combination of autistic and schizotypal traits affects cognitive processes may inform tailored interventions and support strategies for individuals presenting with these traits. Social and environmental influences are important for learning. However, the influence of reward and competition during social learning is less understood. The literature suggests that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex is implicated in hot executive functioning (EF), while the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is related to cool EF. In addition, reward processing deficits are associated with atypical connectivity between the nucleus accumbens and the dorsofrontal regions. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine the role of hot and cool EF in reward processing and their relationship to performance under social competition. We adapted a reward-based n-back task to examine the neural correlates of hot and cool EF and the reward influence on performance during competition. A total of 29 healthy adults showed cortical activation associated with individual differences in EF abilities during fMRI scans. Hot and cool EF activated distinct networks in the right insula, hippocampus, left caudate nucleus, and superior parietal gyrus during the no-competition task, while they differentially activated the right precuneus and caudate nucleus in the competition condition. Further analysis revealed correlations between the Hot–Cool network and reward sensitivity and risk-taking behaviour. The findings provided further insights into the neural basis of hot and cool EF engagement in the socio-emotional regulation for learning. Full article

Self-regulation is a crucial skill in early childhood, due to its influence on school readiness and success, as well as its foundational role in promoting wellbeing across the lifespan. Additionally, self-regulation is malleable, particularly during early childhood. This study investigated the impact of nature-based practices on preschoolers’ self-regulation. The Preschool Self-Regulation Assessment (PSRA) and PSRA Assessor Report were administered to 115 children from nine preschool programs at the beginning and end of the school year. While further research is needed, results suggest the potential for nature-based practices to support SR, in particular hot executive function, and particularly in children from lower socio-economic backgrounds in public preschool. This study contributes to the literature regarding effective practices for supporting self-regulation development in young children and adds to the growing body of research surrounding the impact of nature play on child development and school readiness. Bakground: The early identification of executive function (EF) delays should involve parental reports on children’s executive control in daily activities, capturing both “hot” and “cool” executive functions. This study aimed to revalidate the reliability and validity of the Executive Functions and Occupational Routines Scale (EFORTS) and examine whether it represents both hot and cool EFs Methods: Parents of 971 children (469 boys) aged 3 to 11 years (M = 6.08, SD = 1.8) completed the EFORTS and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions/Preschool version (BRIEF/P). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis led to re–reestablishing the EFORTS daily functional routines with high internal consistency values (0.82–0.93). Results: Significant correlations were revealed between the EFORTS daily function subscales and various BRIEF/P “hot” and “cool” executive scales. Again, divided into three executive subscales, the EFORTS items showed medium-high internal reliability (α = 0.79–0.93). Significant age-related differences were demonstrated in the children’s EFs in three age groups: 3.0–5.11, 6.0–7.11, 8.0–11.11. Conclusions: The results suggest that EFORTS effectively assesses children’s executive control over daily functions, capturing both “cool” and “hot” EFs, making it a reliable tool for early detection of executive delays prior to formal schooling. Background: This research can facilitate the development of early detection tools for ASD by identifying specific patterns of deficits in executive functioning, validating the use of the BRIEF-P as a detection tool, and complementing information obtained from other evaluation instruments (Autism Diagnostic Interview—ADI—and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule—ADOS). Aims: To gain knowledge of the application and usefulness of the BRIEF-P in the evaluation of executive functions (EFs) in people with ASD in the early years of the life cycle. Method: In order to systematically examine this hypothesis, a meta-analysis was conducted to identify the executive profile (strengths and weaknesses) of children with ASD. Out of a total of 161,773 potentially eligible published articles from different databases, 13 appropriate articles were revised and 4 articles were selected. Studies that were included evaluated samples involving individuals with ASD aged 2 to 8 years and were published in English or Spanish during the period of 2012–2022. Results: The executive profile obtained from the application of the BRIEF-P in individuals with ASD was analyzed. It was identified that children with ASD, compared to typically developing children, show significantly clinical scores on the flexibility, inhibition, and global executive functioning scales. The results support the hypothesis of an executive deficit, with flexibility and inhibition being diagnostic markers for early and prompt identification of autism. Conclusions and Discussion: The results confirm deficits in flexibility, although they are not conclusive. This may be due to aspects related to methodology, whereby the studies (i) include very large and heterogeneous age groups, (ii) do not discriminate based on the level of competence, and (iii) use instruments for evaluating executive functions that are not validated or adapted for people with ASD. Another reason is the lack of consensus in the very operational definition of the executive functions construct, with the studies focusing mainly on the cold dimension while ignoring the hot dimension. From the perspective of therapeutic and treatment implications, executive dysfunction can impact adaptive skills in daily life and consequently the person’s autonomy. Full article

The main goal of the current work was to assess the age sensitivity of a novel battery of cool and hot Executive Function (EF) tasks developed for the middle childhood period: the Executive Brain Battery (EBB). To this end, we carried out a first study in which the EBB was administered to six age groups ranging from 6 to 11. Additionally, in a second study, we compared children at the end of middle childhood (age 11 years) and adult performance in the EBB. Results showed that tasks included in the EBB were suitable for all age groups, with more age-related changes being found in cool than hot EF tasks. Moreover, at the end of middle childhood, children reach an adult-like performance in most of these cool and hot tasks. The present findings extend previous research suggesting that cool and hot EFs exhibit different patterns of age-related growth in middle childhood. Additionally, the EEB could become a useful tool for research on EFs during middle childhood that could be adapted for a wide range of populations. Full article

The reliability and durability of integrated circuits (ICs), present in almost every electronic system, from consumer electronics to the automotive or aerospace industries, have been and will continue to be critical concerns for IC chip makers, especially in scaled nanometer technologies. In this context, ICs are expected to deliver optimal performance and reliability throughout their projected lifetime. However, real-time reliability assessment and remaining lifetime projections during in-field IC operation remain unknown due to the absence of trustworthy on-chip reliability monitors. The integration of such on-chip monitors has recently gained significant importance because they can provide real-time IC reliability extraction by exploiting the fundamental physics of two of the major reliability degradation phenomena: bias temperature instability (BTI) and hot carrier degradation (HCD). In this work, we present an extensive study of ring oscillator (RO)-based degradation and annealing monitors designed on our latest 28 nm versatile array chip. This test vehicle, along with a dedicated test setup, enabled the reliable statistical characterization of BTI- and HCD-stressed as well as annealed RO monitor circuits. The versatility of the test vehicle presented in this work permits the execution of accelerated degradation tests together with annealing experiments conducted on RO-based reliability monitor circuits. From these experiments, we have constructed precise annealing maps that provide detailed insights into the annealing behavior of our monitors as a function of temperature and time, ultimately revealing the usage history of the IC. Background. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is accompanied by executive challenges. Objectives. To obtain evidence of the usefulness of the BRIEF-P and to analyze the possible ceiling and floor effect of its scores in the assessment of executive function in preschoolers with signs compatible with a possible diagnosis of ADHD. Method. A search was performed in Science Direct, NCBI (PubMed), and ProQuest Education Journals during the period 2012–2022. We included studies that evaluated samples of individuals with symptomatology compatible with ADHD, with an age range between 2 and 6 years, published in English or Spanish. Of a total of 2538 articles, only seven met the inclusion criteria. The risk of bias was assessed using the QUADAS-2 questionnaire. The main variables were age and executive functioning. Conclusions. Executive deficits in early-age individuals with symptoms compatible with ADHD are more extensive than just deficits in working memory. A floor effect has been found in tests associated with hot executive functions and a ceiling effect in cold executive functions. This makes it necessary to use different tests to assess executive performance in preschoolers with ADHD-compatible symptomatology and to design intervention proposals accordingly. The BRIEF-P is an instrument that facilitates obtaining a sensitive and discriminative executive profile, although it should be used in combination with other neuropsychological performance tests. Garbled circuit (GC) is one of the few promising protocols to realize general-purpose secure computation. The target computation is represented by a Boolean circuit that is subsequently transformed into a network of encrypted tables for execution. The need for distributing GCs among parties, however, requires excessive data communication, called garbling cost, which bottlenecks system performance. Due to the zero garbling cost of XOR operations, existing works reduce garbling cost by representing the target computation as the XOR-AND graph (XAG) with minimal structural multiplicative complexity (MC). Starting with a thorough study of the cipher-text efficiency of different types of logic primitives, for the first time, we propose XOR-OneHot graph (X1G) as a suitable logic representation for the generation of low-cost GCs. Our contribution includes (a) an exact algorithm to synthesize garbling-cost-optimal X1G implementations for small-scale functions and (b) a set of logic optimization algorithms customized for X1Gs, which together form a robust optimization flow that delivers high-quality X1Gs for practical functions. The effectiveness of the proposals is evidenced by comprehensive evaluations: compared with the state of the art, 7.34%, 26.14%, 13.51%, and 4.34% reductions in garbling costs are achieved on average for the involved benchmark suites, respectively, with reasonable runtime overheads. A New Advance on the Improvement of Forest Ecosystem Functions in the Karst Desertification Control

In recent years, after the implementation of large-scale ecological restoration projects, karst areas in the South China Karst have become global “greening” hot spots. However, the biodiversity, ecosystem quality, and security patterns in karst areas are still severely affected. The reason for this is that despite the execution of karst desertification control projects, the lag mechanism of forest ecosystem functions and services is still unclear. Therefore, we analyze the progress in the research related to desertification control and the improvement of regional forest ecosystem function through a systematic literature review approach. The results show that the major landmarks achieved so far include the following aspects: based on the karst desertification control area, we have elucidated the driving factors of forest ecosystem change, discovered the ecological security pattern of landscape optimization and reconstruction, revealed the internal mechanism of forest system structure optimization and stability enhancement, overcome the technical constraints of forest water–fertilizer coupling, introduced a strategy for regulating functional traits to improve the growth and development of vegetation, proposed strategies to enhance carbon sequestration in forests and the efficiency of microbial carbon use, and created models and paths to realize the value of forest products. The key scientific issues to be addressed in the future mainly comprise the following: the effects of spatial heterogeneity on forest ecosystems, disturbances in landscape reconfiguration caused by human activities, the work mechanisms of the combination and configuration of the niche in structural optimization, the response of species configuration to the water cycle, the coupled relationship between biodiversity and soil properties, the screening and construction of the plant germplasm resource base, the functional trade-offs/synergistic mechanisms of karst forest ecosystems, the creation of policies for forest product in terms of rights, trading, and compensation, and systematic research on the extended industrial chain of forest ecosystems, its service potential, and so on.
