At the height of the second Trump presidency, the elaboration of violence in Latiné/x immigrant communities has taken a familiar discursive shape: as disappearance. The enforced disappearance, a name for the arrest, detention, and abduction of persons, followed by denial of the act(s), has been leveled against numerous Black and brown communities. From legal concessions granting immunity to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to racially profile individuals, to a widespread surge in deportations, detentions, and deaths, there is a need for culturally congruent and flexible forms of solidarity that honor waywardness. For if disappearance is an attack on and through visibility, clandestine communication plots and echolocates resistance at the periphery of visibility’s enforcement. In this essay, I forward clandestine communication as a theory and tactical stratagem that maps the transmission of vernacular discourse according to fugitive strategy. Stratagems articulate tactics of trickery often found in gossip/chisme/kikis, redaction strategies, sonic upheaval, and whisper networks. But as a theory, clandestine communication charges community-engaged research with being actively political by considering the theoretical, methodological, analytical, and material tactics of fugitivity as significant to the ways we identify power and resistance in our communities. In drawing from queer, trans*, and feminist of color (QTFOC) genealogies, clandestine communication denotes flexible forms of solidarity that scaffold these fugitive vernacular practices. This theoretical paper thinks with Latiné/x immigrant communities by arguing that community defense initiatives, such as neighborhood defense workshops and rapid response networks, outline participatory and ephemeral (or less visible) ways that vernacular communities can co-create clandestine networks of care. Ultimately, this essay calls for greater consideration to be given to the everyday, defiant ways that community-engaged research is premised on the pragmatism of trust and hiddenness. Full article

Enterococci are widely used indicators of fecal contamination because they originate in the gastrointestinal tracts of warm-blooded animals, and species-level identification can support source attribution. This study evaluated the temporal abundance and species composition of enterococci in Quebrada Mondongo, southwestern Puerto Rico, a stream influenced by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent and nonpoint-source inputs. Five sampling campaigns for species distribution and fourteen for population quantification were conducted over approximately one year at the WWTP effluent discharge and at upstream and downstream stations. Enterococci concentrations exceeded the regulatory threshold for surface waters. Among the confirmed isolates, E. faecium dominated upstream and in the effluent, occurring approximately twofold more frequently than E. faecalis. Downstream, E. faecalis increased in relative abundance, shifting the species ratio of E. faecium/E. faecalis from 2.3–3.2 to 0.89. E. casseliflavus was detected at low frequency, and E. gallinarum was not observed. Virulence-associated genes (esp, gelE) were identified in ~75% of E. faecalis isolates, consistent with enhanced environmental persistence. Although upstream and effluent patterns reflected a strong human fecal signal, the downstream enrichment of E. faecalis suggests additional secondary inputs and/or naturalization. This study provides empirical evidence of species shifts in a tropical stream, with an increase in E. faecalis downstream of a WWTP despite E. faecium dominance in the effluent highlighting the likely influence of other nonpoint fecal sources within the watershed. Overall, these results suggest that the WWTP effluent did not contribute substantially to enterococci concentrations nor significantly influence the species composition of enterococci downstream in Quebrada Mondongo, highlighting the likely influence of other nonpoint fecal sources within the watershed. Smallholder farming remains a critical livelihood source for rural communities in South Africa, particularly in the Eastern Cape Province. However, cropland abandonment has become an escalating concern, undermining food security, household incomes, and the long-term sustainability of agricultural systems. This study assessed the socio-economic and climate-related factors influencing cropland abandonment in the former homelands of Transkei. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining a quantitative survey, a qualitative focus group discussion, and a key informant interview. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, a double-hurdle model, and thematic analysis. The descriptive results revealed that the average respondent was 57 years, with a predominantly male majority (57.47%), a primary education (40.27%), and a mean average household size of 5.4. About 51.58% of household heads were married and 48.42% were single, with a mean household income of R63 155 (3680.26 USD). The econometric results from the first hurdle model indicated that education level, farming experience, rainfall variability, access to irrigation, and off-farm income significantly influenced the decision to abandon cropland. The second hurdle model demonstrated that the extent of cropland abandonment was shaped by labour availability, access to credit, rainfall patterns, cooperative membership, and farming experience. The study concluded that cropland abandonment in the former Transkei was influenced by different factors. Therefore, the study would recommend targeted policy interventions that strengthen human capital, improve access to agricultural support services, and promote youth participation and collective farming structures to revitalise smallholder agriculture and enhance rural food security. In this paper, an innovative design of a silicon spiral drift detector (SDD) has been proposed. In this design, gaps under the SiO2 layer between the cathode rings are kept constant, with a minimum value to reduce the surface leakage current. The cathode pitch profile Pr as a function of radius r is allowed to change in an arbitrary way to achieve the optimum field distribution. The concept, design considerations, modeling and electrical simulations have been carried out for this novel structure with a hexagonal spiral silicon drift detector. Using one-dimensional analyses, we obtain the exact solution of the spiral design r=rθ  with a near-arbitrary pitch profile Pr=P1rr11η, with η as an arbitrary real number. We also obtained the electric potential and field profiles on both surfaces of the detector. Using a Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) tool, we made 3D simulations of the detector’s electrical properties. The hexagonal spiral silicon drift detector has excellent electrical properties: a uniform electric field, smooth distribution of electric potential and electron concentration, and a clear electron drift channel. The distributions of the electric field, electric potential, and electron concentration are symmetrical and smooth, which is beneficial for applications in photon sciences (X-ray) and safeguards and homeland security (particle radiation). The theoretical work and simulation results serve as solid foundations for the detector design and the expansion of semiconductor technology. Full article

Migraine and epilepsy are common neurological disorders that share overlapping symptoms, such as visual disturbances and altered consciousness, making accurate diagnosis challenging. Although their underlying mechanisms differ, both conditions involve recurrent irregular brain activity, and traditional EEG-based diagnosis relies heavily on clinical interpretation, which may be subjective and insufficient for clear differentiation. To address this challenge, this study introduces an automated EEG classification framework combining Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DTCWT) for feature extraction with a Random Subspace Ensemble Classifier for multi-class discrimination. EEG data recorded under photic and nonphotic stimulation were analyzed to capture both temporal and frequency characteristics. DTCWT proved effective in modeling the non-stationary nature of EEG signals and extracting condition-specific features, while the ensemble classifier improved generalization by training multiple models on diverse feature subsets. The proposed system achieved an average accuracy of 99.50%, along with strong F-measure, AUC, and Kappa scores. Notably, although previous studies suggest heightened EEG activity in migraine patients during flash stimulation, findings here indicate that flash stimulation alone does not reliably distinguish migraine from epilepsy. Overall, this research highlights the promise of advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques in enhancing diagnostic precision for complex neurological disorders. Full article

Background: The athletic potential of young athletes is shaped by individual and environmental factors. Objectives: This study examines the physical growth, body composition, biological maturation, motivation, perseverance, physical performance and contextual factors of young male and female track and field athletes. Methods: A total of 425 (224 girls) track and field athletes were recruited and divided into five age cohorts (10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 years respectively). Measurements were assessed across (i) individual (anthropometry, body composition, biological maturation, motivation, and perseverance), (ii) performance (motor performance), and (iii) club context domains. Data analysis used descriptive statistics for clubs’ characteristics, a two-factor ANOVA for anthropometry, body composition, biological maturation, and performance and an ANCOVA for motivation and perseverance. All analyses used STATA 18.0. Results: Sex-related differences were identified in physical growth, maturation, psychological, and performance variables during adolescence. Girls reached their peak height velocity (PHV) around 12 years of age, compared to 14 years in boys. At all ages (except at age 11), girls had higher body fat, and at age 12 were taller and outperformed boys in right-handgrip strength and in sprint (30 m and 40 m). From age 13 years onwards, boys became taller, with greater leg length, greater fat-free mass, and superior results (p < 0.05) in most performance tests. Psychologically, girls reported higher levels of interest–enjoyment, effort–importance, relatedness, and perceived choice; no sex differences were found in perseverance. The clubs involved were of small size, with developing, yet qualified, coaches, with limited support staff and infrastructure. Conclusions: Clear sex differences in physical growth, psychological, and performance variables emerged during adolescence, and were related in part to earlier maturation in girls. Further, there was variation in clubs’ infrastructure and staff that may potentially influence track and field athletes’ growth and development. Full article

This paper presents the rationale and design of a study of growth and development in young track and field athletes: the EXcellence and PERformance in Track and field (EXPERT) study, and details the methodologies used. Background: Longitudinal research examining individual-environment interactions in youth athletic development is scarce for track and field. Objectives: The EXPERT study investigates how individual (anthropometry, maturation, motivation) and environmental (family, coach, club) characteristics influence developmental trajectories in youth track and field athletes. Methods: A mixed-longitudinal design will follow 400 athletes (200♂, 200♀; aged 10–14 years) from 40 Portuguese clubs across five cohorts assessed biannually over three years. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model, assessments encompass individual, performance, health, and environmental domains. Data quality control will consist of rigorous training of all research team members, implementation of standardized protocols, a pilot study, and an in-field reliability study. Multilevel growth models will examine trajectories and predictor effects of predictors. Conclusions: EXPERT will provide evidence to optimize training and support holistic youth athlete development. South Africa’s land reform program is a cornerstone of efforts to redress historical injustices, guided by the 1997 White Paper on Land Reform Policy and structured around restitution, redistribution, and tenure reform. Three decades into implementation, this study systematically reviews the policy performance from 1994 to 2024, focusing on these pillars and related governance measures. Despite repeated policy revisions and extensive public debate, significant gaps persist between objectives, such as equitable access, tenure security, and poverty reduction—and actual outcomes. Using PRISMA guidelines, 94 peer-reviewed articles were selected from Scopus (1994–2024) alongside key policy documents and official reports. Evidence shows that land reform has consistently fallen short of its targets. Restitution claims remain largely cash-based, undermining tenure security, while redistribution has transferred less than 14% of agricultural land, far below the 30% target. Beneficiaries under the Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy (PLAS) often hold insecure lease agreements, and most households in former homelands lack title deeds, perpetuating vulnerability. The weak institutional capacity, poor coordination, and inadequate post-settlement support further constrain progress. The review concludes that the most fundamental policy priority is establishing a unified national framework that guarantees secure land tenure through the issuance of title deeds, complemented by integrated post-settlement support and transparent beneficiary selection. Strengthening tenure security is essential for enabling investment, improving livelihoods, and achieving equitable and sustainable land reform. Full article

Background: Accurate anthropometric data provides insight into comprehending morphological optimisation in sports. This study aims to determine the probability that a randomly selected individual from the general reference population falls within the sports-specific population. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 18,462 children and adolescents (9–14 years) from the Huila department (general population, n = 17,895) and the Neiva City Sports Schools representing athletes in team sports (sport-specific population, n = 567). Body size attributes (weight and height) were considered, and the bivariate overlap zone (BOZ) was calculated. A valid and noninvasive method was adopted to estimate the maturity offset and, complementarily, the age at peak height velocity. Results: (i) BOZ results demonstrate body size is relatively more important at younger ages compared to adolescent years in both girls and boys across all sports; (ii) differences in BOZ values are clear across different sports; (iii) basketball consistently showed higher BOZ scores in both genders indicating a relatively greater opportunity for selection in this sport based on body size alone; and (iv) BOZ values tend to be substantially lower for boys when compared to girls, particularly in the older age groups. Conclusions: Our study suggested (i) more competition for sports selection among boys, likely too much selection emphasis on body size among the youngest children, and (ii) reduced competition for sports selection among young adolescents, particularly girls. We evaluate tactile-first robotic traversal on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) figure-8 mobility test using a two-way repeated-measures design across various algorithms (three tactile policies—M1 reactive, M2 terrain-weighted, M3 memory-augmented; a monocular camera baseline, CB-V; a tactile histogram baseline, T-VFH; and an optional tactile-informed replanner, T-D* Lite) and lighting conditions (Indoor, Outdoor, and Dark). The platform is the custom-built Eleven robot—a quadruped integrating a joint-mounted tactile tentacle with a tip force-sensitive resistor (FSR; Walfront 9snmyvxw25, China; 0–10 kg range, ≈0.1 N resolution @ 83 Hz) and a woven Galvorn carbon-nanotube (CNT) yarn for proprioceptive bend sensing. Control and sensing are fully wireless via an ESP32-S3, Arduino Nano 33 BLE, Raspberry Pi 400, and a mini VESC controller. Across 660 trials, the tactile stack maintained ∼21 ms (p50) policy latency and mid-80% success across all lighting conditions, including total darkness. The memory-augmented tactile policy (M3) exhibited consistent robustness relative to the camera baseline (CB-V), trailing by only ≈3–4% in Indoor and ≈13–16% in Outdoor and Dark conditions. Pre-specified, two one-sided tests (TOSTs) confirmed no speed equivalence in any M3↔CB-V comparison. Unlike vision-based approaches, tactile-first traversal is invariant to illumination and texture—an essential capability for navigation in darkness, smoke, or texture-poor, confined environments. Overall, these results show that a tactile-first, memory-augmented control stack achieves lighting-independent traversal on DHS benchmarks while maintaining competitive latency and success, trading modest speed for robustness and sensing independence. Densely integrated microarchitectures spanning three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D-ICs), chiplet-based designs, and system-in-package (SiP) assemblies make heat a first-order security concern rather than a mere reliability issue. This review consolidates the landscape of thermal side-channel attacks (TSCAs) on densely integrated microarchitectures: we systematize observation vectors and threat models, clarify core concepts and assumptions, compare the most credible evidence from the past decade, and distill the main classes of defenses across the hardware–software stack. We also explain why hardening against thermal leakage is integral to cyber–physical system (CPS) security and outline the most promising research directions for the field. The strategic relevance of this agenda is reflected in current policy and funding momentum, including initiatives by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (DHS/CISA) on operational technology (OT) security, programs by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on CPS, and Canada’s Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative and Cyber-Physical Resilience Program (RAII, >CAD 35 million), to bridge advanced microelectronics with next-generation cybersecurity. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo represents both a biodiversity hotspot and the ancestral homeland of the Indigenous Mbuti and Efe peoples, whose livelihoods and knowledge systems are closely tied to forest resources. This study investigates how Indigenous knowledge and practices contribute to sustainable resource management under conditions of rapid socio-cultural transformation. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining socio-demographic surveys (n = 80), focus group discussions, floristic inventories, and statistical analyses (ANOVA, logistic regressions, chi-square, MCA). Results show that hunting, fishing, gathering, and honey harvesting remain central livelihood activities, governed by customary taboos and restrictions that act as de facto ecological regulations. Agriculture, recently introduced through intercultural exchange with neighboring Bantu populations, complements rather than replaces traditional practices and demonstrates emerging agroecological hybridization. Nevertheless, evidence of biodiversity decline (including local disappearance of species such as Dioscorea spp.), erosion of intergenerational knowledge transmission, and increased reliance on monetary income indicate vulnerabilities. Multiple Correspondence Analysis revealed a highly structured socio-ecological gradient (98.5% variance explained; Cronbach’s α = 0.977), indicating that perceptions of environmental change are strongly coupled with demographic identity and livelihood strategies. Floristic inventories confirmed significant differences in species abundance across camps (ANOVA, p < 0.001), highlighting site-specific pressures and the protective effect of persistent customary norms. The findings underscore the resilience and adaptability of Indigenous Peoples but also their exposure to ecological and cultural disruptions. We conclude that formal recognition of Indigenous institutions and integration of their knowledge systems into co-management frameworks are essential to strengthen ecological resilience, secure Indigenous rights, and align conservation policies with global biodiversity and climate agendas. As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into emergency management, ethical considerations demand greater attention. Essential components of comprehensive emergency management include mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, which should serve as the foundation for integrating AI-driven science and technologies to effectively safeguard populations and infrastructure in times of crisis. This paper reviewed the ethical challenges of AI in emergency management in terms of critical issues, best practices, applications, emerging ethical considerations, and strategies addressing ethical challenges. Three core ethical themes are identified: algorithmic bias; privacy, transparency and accountability; and human–AI collaboration. This paper thoroughly analyzed the associated ethical challenges, reviewed the theoretical frameworks and proposed strategies to mitigate ethical challenges by strengthening the audits of algorithms, enhancing transparency in AI decision-making, and incorporating stakeholder engagement. Finally, the importance of creating policies to govern AI ethics was discussed. Full article

Escalating extreme wildfires, fueled by the confluence of climate change, land use patterns alterations, ignitions by humans, and flammable fuels accumulation, pose significant and increasingly destructive risks to critical infrastructure (CI). This study presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of wildfire impacts and the corresponding CI resilience strategies employed across the EU and the US. It examines the vulnerability of CIs to the devastating effects of wildfires and their inadvertent contribution to wildfire ignition and spread. The study evaluates the EU’s CER Directive and the US National Infrastructure Protection Plan and assesses European Commission wildfire resilience-related initiatives, including FIRELOGUE, FIRE-RES, SILVANUS, and TREEADS flagship projects. It synthesizes empirical evidence and extracts key lessons learned from major wildfire events in the EU (2017 Portuguese fires; 2018 Mati wildfire) and the US (2023 Lahaina disaster; 2025 Los Angeles fires), drawing insights regarding the effectiveness of various resilience measures and identifying areas for improvement. Persistent challenges impeding effective wildfire resilience are identified, including governance fragmentation, lack of standardization in risk assessment and mitigation protocols, and insufficient integration of scientific knowledge and data into policy formulation and implementation. It concludes with actionable recommendations aimed at fostering science-based, multi-stakeholder approaches to strengthen wildfire resilience at both policy and operational levels. Full article

The TomOpt software package is designed to optimise the geometric configuration and the specifications of detectors intended for muon scattering tomography, an imaging technique exploiting cosmic-ray muons. The software employs an end-to-end differentiable pipeline that models the interactions of muons with detectors and scanned volumes, infers properties of the scanned materials, and performs an optimisation cycle minimising a user-defined loss function. This article presents the implementation of a case study related to cargo scanning applications in the context of homeland security. Full article
