This study examines the relationship between learning environments and learning outcomes in acquiring Korean as a language target. We compare two learner groups residing in the United States: English-speaking learners of Korean in foreign language contexts versus Korean heritage speakers. Both groups share English as their dominant language and receive similar tertiary-level instruction, yet differ in their language-learning profiles. We measure two groups’ comprehension behaviour involving Korean subject−predicate honorific agreement, focusing on two conditions manifesting a mismatch between the honorifiable status of a subject and the realisation of the honorific suffix in a predicate. Results from the acceptability judgement task revealed that (1) both learner groups rated the ungrammatical condition as more acceptable than native speakers did, (2) Korean heritage speakers rated the ungrammatical condition significantly lower than English-speaking learners, and (3) overall proficiency in Korean modulated learners’ evaluations of the ungrammatical condition in opposite directions between the groups. No between-group difference was found in the infelicitous-yet-grammatical condition. Results from reaction time measurement further showed that Korean heritage speakers responded considerably faster than English-speaking learners of Korean. These results underscore the critical role of broad usage experience—whether through home language exposure for heritage language speakers or formal instruction for foreign language learners—in shaping non-dominant language activities. Selective Mutism (SM) is a childhood anxiety disorder characterized by the persistent inability to speak in specific social settings while being able to speak freely in more comfortable environments, such as at home with family. This condition often leads to significant impairments in social, academic, and occupational functions. This article presents a novel treatment methodology that integrates the physiology of vocal production with pragmatic language instruction through teletherapy, administered to two adolescents diagnosed with selective mutism (SM). The frequency of speaking on the Selective Mutism Questionnaire increased from 35% to 86% and from 25% to 55% for the two children. Pragmatic language skills on the Social Communication Skills: Pragmatics Checklist improved from 47% to 96% and 13% to 40% after treatment. It is crucial to emphasize vocal control for speech initiation and pragmatic language for verbal expression. Detailed strategies, specific activities, and treatment outcomes are provided. Background/Objectives: Speech intelligibility (SI) is a key indicator of spoken language development, especially for children with hearing loss, as it directly impacts communication and social engagement. However, due to logistical and methodological challenges, SI assessment is often underutilised in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based transcription model in assessing SI in young children with cochlear implants (CI), hearing aids (HA), or normal hearing (NH), in comparison to naïve human listeners. Methods: A total of 580 speech samples from 58 five-year-old children were transcribed by three naïve listeners and the AI model. Word-level transcription accuracy was evaluated using Bland–Altman plots, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and word error rate (WER) metrics. Performance was compared across the CI, HA, and NH groups. Results: The AI model demonstrated high consistency with naïve listeners across all groups. Bland–Altman analyses revealed minimal bias, with fewer than 6% of sentences falling outside the 95% limits of agreement. ICC values exceeded 0.9 in all groups, with particularly strong agreement in the NH and CI groups (ICCs > 0.95). WER results further confirmed this alignment and indicated that children with CIs showed better SI performance than those using HAs. Conclusions: The AI-based method offers a reliable and objective solution for SI assessment in young children. Its agreement with human performance supports its integration into clinical and home environments for early intervention and ongoing monitoring of speech development in children with hearing loss. Air quality management concerns the assessment, analysis and mitigation strategies associated with ensuring that air is breathable and non-toxic. Successful management is a cognitively intensive task, knowledge-focused and converges multiple sources of information to develop a shared understanding of a problem. To operate effectively in this space, managers and operational teams share common points of reference in discussing problems and solutions, strategies, tactical briefings, etc., and communication and technical language use are key to the discipline. However, few studies have homed in on the language communities of air quality management discourse, and fewer still have exploited this to gain insight into the cognitive processes underpinning salient operational knowledge production. This paper draws upon a discussion from a multi-stakeholder workshop on bioaerosols and the built environment and draws upon Cognitive Linguistics to systematically examine the cognitive structuring of those different stakeholder representations. This approach is then explored as a contribution to good practice in air quality knowledge management and communication that is consistent with studies on cognitive and learning science and has potential for policy formulation. People in multilingual societies develop complex and interconnected food-making and food-discussing networks. On the basis of an experimental course titled “Food at Home, Food on the Move: Globalization and Regionalism in Modern Food Culture” taught at the University of Helsinki, we will show how the acquisition of culinary terminology puts forward the interconnectedness of languages and the dynamics between them in several sociolinguistic contexts. The lectures were grouped geographically: Eating with the Neighbors (Finnish cuisine and Swedish, Russian, Karelian and other influences); From the Baltic to Central Europe (Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, German, and Hungarian food cultures); Formative Cuisines of the Mediterranean (French, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern cuisine, etc.); and Eating Outside Europe (food culture influences from the US, Mexico, China, Japan, and India). The assignments included a critical lecture diary, an essay about eating experiences, or additional reading, a conversational analysis of a culinary show, or fieldwork in an ethnic restaurant. Raising awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, motivating course participants to discuss the role and interaction of languages in their repertoire, makes them reflect on their multilingual identities. It allows educators to explore individuals’ DLCs in different contexts while navigating diverse global and local environments based on the principles of fairness and equality in education. We examined the effects of shared reading workshops on children’s early literacy outcomes. Data was collected for 240 children, 144 of whom had their parents or caregivers participate in a shared reading workshop. The remaining 129 were included as a comparison group. Pre- and post-intervention measures of HLLE, narrative skills, alphabet knowledge, and parental self-efficacy scores were collected. Findings show higher and statistically significant scores in alphabet knowledge and narrative skills for children whose parents implemented shared reading. Parental self-efficacy increased after participating in the workshops. Correlations between HLLE, parental self-efficacy, and children’s outcomes were low yet significant. To further investigate the role of HLLE as a mediator of children’s outcomes, we used structural equation modeling. Results show an interaction of HLLE on children’s narrative skills and alphabet knowledge. Full article

This study employs walking interviews to examine the low-carbon practices, cultural adaptation, and policy awareness of older Chinese migrants in the UK within their everyday environments. A total of 20 participants were interviewed in public spaces such as parks, supermarkets, and their homes. Using contextual thematic analysis, the study identifies key factors influencing their environmental behaviors. The findings reveal the following: (1) Language barriers, economic pressures, and social isolation limit migrants’ understanding of environmental policies. Many participants rely on self-sufficient ethnic community networks rather than engaging with mainstream sources; (2) Generational differences are evident—younger migrants demonstrate greater theoretical awareness of environmental policies, whereas older migrants exhibit stronger low-carbon behaviors through energy conservation and waste reduction; (3) A balance between cultural identity and consumption habits—while some migrants adjust their dietary, spending, and linguistic habits, core cultural values such as frugality and family responsibility remain unchanged. This study highlights the value of walking interviews in capturing situational insights into low-carbon behaviors and cultural adaptation. It provides empirical evidence for government agencies and community organizations, advocating for cross-cultural environmental education and improved policy communication. Recommendations include targeted environmental training, community-based volunteer initiatives, intergenerational environmental education, and policy dissemination through WeChat, Chinese communities, and ethnic networks. These measures can help bridge the generational gap in policy awareness and promote social integration among older Chinese migrants. Full article

The rapid growth of smart home technologies, driven by the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), has introduced both opportunities and challenges in automating daily routines and orchestrating device interactions. Traditional rule-based automation systems often fall short in adapting to dynamic conditions, integrating heterogeneous devices, and responding to evolving user needs. To address these limitations, this study introduces a novel smart home orchestration framework that combines generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and the modular OSGi framework. The proposed system allows users to express requirements in natural language, which are then interpreted and transformed into executable service bundles by large language models (LLMs) enhanced with contextual knowledge retrieved from vector databases. These AI-generated service bundles are dynamically deployed via OSGi, enabling real-time service adaptation without system downtime. Manufacturer-provided device capabilities are seamlessly integrated into the orchestration pipeline, ensuring compatibility and extensibility. The framework was validated through multiple use-case scenarios involving dynamic device discovery, on-demand code generation, and adaptive orchestration based on user preferences. Results highlight the system’s ability to enhance automation efficiency, personalization, and resilience. This work demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of AI-driven orchestration in realising intelligent, flexible, and scalable smart home environments. Full article

The use of hearing technology is one of the most effective strategies for providing access to spoken language and the auditory environment for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. In recent years, rapid advancements in hearing technologies have significantly improved access to spoken languages for learners of all ages. As part of the Special Issue “Educating Deaf Students in the 21st Century: A Changed and Changing Context”, this article describes how changes in hearing technology are related to changes in where and how students who are deaf or hard of hearing are educated. This article is designed to provide a foundation of knowledge about today’s hearing technologies for families, educators, and professionals such as speech–language pathologists or early childhood educators who support families and students. It provides an overview of hearing technology options, how they are prescribed and fit, and how benefits for language and literacy development can be evaluated. Barriers to effective use and future directions for hearing technologies are also described. The section “Highlights for Educators and Families” in the article discusses the practical application of this information to the work of those supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing at home, at school, and in the community. Artificial Intelligence-Driven Analysis of Telehealth Effectiveness in Youth Mental Health Services: Insights from SAMHSA Data

Background: The rapid adoption of telehealth services for youth mental health care necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of its effectiveness. This study aimed to analyze the impact of telehealth on youth mental health outcomes using artificial intelligence techniques applied to large-scale public health data. Methods: We conducted an AI-driven analysis of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and other SAMHSA datasets. Machine learning techniques, including random forest models, K-means clustering, and time series analysis, were employed to evaluate telehealth adoption patterns, predictors of effectiveness, and comparative outcomes with traditional in-person care. Natural language processing was used to analyze sentiment in user feedback. Results: Telehealth adoption among youth increased significantly, with usage rising from 2.3 sessions per year in 2019 to 8.7 in 2022. Telehealth showed comparable effectiveness to in-person care for depressive disorders and superior effectiveness for anxiety disorders. Session frequency, age, and prior diagnosis were identified as key predictors of telehealth effectiveness. Four distinct user clusters were identified, with socioeconomic status and home environment strongly associated with positive outcomes. States with favorable reimbursement policies saw a 15% greater increase in youth telehealth utilization and 7% greater improvement in mental health outcomes. Conclusions: Telehealth demonstrates significant potential in improving access to and effectiveness of mental health services for youth. However, addressing technological barriers and socioeconomic disparities is crucial to maximize its benefits. Full article

The lack of evidence synthesis studies on the role of psychiatric mental health nursing in the context of psychiatric home hospitalization underscores the limited research on nurses providing care in these teams, particularly concerning their experiences and responsibilities and the actual role of nurses in this context. This knowledge has the potential to improve the quality of mental healthcare by guiding nursing practices. Objective: To map the concepts related to the role of mental health nurses in psychiatric home hospitalization. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the methodology proposed by the JBI, involving five methodological stages. No search limits were applied except for language. Results: The review identified five key dimensions of nursing in psychiatric home hospitalization: satisfaction; care models; the therapeutic relationship; the care environment; the organization of care. These interconnected dimensions influence quality care. Satisfaction among nurses, patients, and families is associated with improved outcomes and reduced stigma. The therapeutic relationship is characterized by a humanistic approach, emphasizing dialogue, empathy, and shared decision making. Additionally, the importance of care organization is highlighted, including individualized care plans, medication management, and intersectoral collaboration. Discussion: The five nursing dimensions align with the Quality Standards of the Portuguese Nursing Council and are consistent with the scientific literature. Conclusions: Although there is a shortage of studies on this topic, this review allows for the synthesis of nursing interventions and reflection on the paradigm shift in care within the scope of psychiatric mental health nursing interventions. Future studies highlighting the value of mental health nursing interventions, with a particular focus on nursing-sensitive indicators and employing quantitative or mixed methods, will be crucial to furthering the analysis conducted thus far. Secondhand smoke affects nearly 40% of children worldwide, leading to serious health and behavioral problems. Being neurotoxic, it poses potential risks for child health and learning. In Cuba, there is limited research on the association of secondhand smoke with children’s brain health, especially in vulnerable populations like young children at home. The overall purpose of this study is two-fold. First, we determined the relationship between household smoke exposure and risks to brain health in Cuban children. Second, we analyzed the role of family environment factors, such as socio-economic status, in our estimates. Although this research represents the first investigation of its kind in Cuba, we expect to find evidence of neurotoxic associations with household smoke. We collected data between 2015 and 2018 using the medical records of 627 Cuban preschool children to explore the link between brain health indicators and exposure to tobacco smoke at home. We assessed archival reports on parental smoking, duration and frequency of exposure, and several indicators of brain health, including executive function, language development, sleep quality, and fluid intelligence. The findings indicate that exposure to tobacco smoke at home has a negative association with children’s brain health, affecting both the cognitive (executive and linguistic functions) and non-cognitive aspects (sleep quality) of child development. Continuous exposure (five to seven times per week) and transient exposure (two to three times per week) were found to be more negatively related to sleep quality than in cognitive functions, particularly in children of middle socio-economic status. This highlights the need to implement parental information campaigns in Cuba. Full article

This mixed methods study explores the effects of cumulative exposure, age of onset of acquisition (AO), parent proficiency and richness of the language environment on the grammatical development in French and English of 49 French–English bilingual children who were acquiring the languages either simultaneously (2L1) or successively (cL2). Participants (24 girls) were in 1st grade (M = 6;4, n = 20) or 5th grade (M = 10;4, n = 29), attending a state school in France, in a French–English bilingual programme. Production data come from a narrative task in each language. Parent questionnaires were used to explore environmental factors. Results show, first, that children’s age and parent proficiency were positive predictors of grammatical accuracy in English, while in French only cumulative exposure was a positive predictor. Secondly, exposure showed a stronger relationship with grammatical accuracy in cL2 children; however, only in French, the language in which children made more errors overall. Finally, we found that both 2L1 and cL2 children made gender errors, an early-acquired structure in French. A qualitative analysis of errors with gender highlights, first, the importance of language output for grammatical development, even for children receiving substantial language input and, second, the role of home factors which play a more important role than community language use in shaping grammatical development. This study underscores the complex, interconnected nature of experiential effects on bilingual grammatical development in each language. Full article

However, few studies have explored this topic in the specific environment of home service robots. Notably, most existing research relies on databases composed of English-language data, while studies utilizing Korean speech data are exceedingly scarce. This gap underscores the need for research on speaker recognition in robotic environments, specifically using Korean data. In response, this paper conducts experiments using a speaker recognition database tailored to the Korean language and set in a robotic context. The database includes noise generated by robot movement as well as common environmental noise, accounting for variable distances between humans and robots, which are partitioned accordingly. The deep learning model employed is SincNet, with experiments conducted under two settings for the SincNet filter parameters: one with learnable parameters and the other with fixed values. After training the model with data collected at varying distances, performance was tested across these distances. Experimental results indicate that SincNet with learnable parameters achieved a peak accuracy of 99%. Full article

Language Management in Transnational Multilingual Families: Generation 1.5 Parents in Finland

In today’s globalized world, more children are born to parents who speak two or more languages between them. These families manage complex language dynamics, with diverse language practices influencing communication among family members. The complexity intensifies when multilingual and multicultural parents move with their children to a country with a new majority language, while keeping connections to their original society. In such cases, balancing heritage and host country languages affects both cultural preservation and integration into a new society. Based on semi-structured interviews with seven Generation 1.5 Russian–Hebrew bilingual parents living in Finland, this paper explores their strategies for managing their children’s multilingual development. The study poses two key questions: What are the language management strategies reported by the parents? What are the major challenges these parents face in maintaining heritage Russian and Hebrew languages in Finland? Thematic data analysis using ATLAS.ti software highlights the parents’ persistent commitment to maintaining multilingualism within their families, focusing on preserving existing social connections and fostering new ones for the entire family. The findings reveal key aspects of parental language management, parental involvement and home environments, along with reported challenges, both personal and institutional, in maintaining Hebrew and Russian as heritage languages in Finland. This study offers a new perspective on language management strategies in multilingual families, handling a less-explored language combination. By analyzing individual language management approaches, this study reveals common strategies used to support multilingualism and balance heritage languages with those of a new environment, thereby contributing to discussions on linguistic diversity and multicultural integration in transnational settings.
