Rapid-Optimized Process Parameters of 1080 Carbon Steel Additively Manufactured via Laser Powder Bed Fusion on High-Throughput Mechanical Property Testing

To ensure the sustainability of alloy-based strategies, both compositional design and processing routes must be simplified. Metal additive manufacturing (AM), with its exceptionally rapid, non-equilibrium solidification, offers a unique platform to produce tailored microstructures in simple alloys that deliver superior mechanical properties. In this study, we employ laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to fabricate 1080 plain carbon steel, a binary alloy comprising only iron and carbon. Deviating from conventional process optimization focusing primarily on density, we optimize LPBF parameters for mechanical performance. We systematically varied key parameters (laser power and scan speed) to produce batches of tensile specimens, which were then evaluated on a high-throughput mechanical testing platform (HTP). Using response surface methodology (RSM), we developed predictive models correlating these parameters with yield strength (YS) and elongation. The RSM models identified optimal and suboptimal parameter sets. Specimens printed under the predicted optimal conditions achieved YS of 1543.5 MPa and elongation of 7.58%, closely matching RSM predictions (1595.3 MPa and 8.32%) with deviations of −3.25% and −8.89% for YS and elongation, respectively, thus validating model accuracy. Comprehensive microstructural characterization, including metallographic analysis and fracture surface examination, revealed the microstructural origins of performance differences and the underlying strengthening mechanisms. This methodology enables rapid evaluation and optimization of LPBF parameters for 1080 carbon steel and can be generalized as an efficient framework for robust LPBF process development. Full article

Blast mitigation of structures is an important research topic due to increasing intentional and accidental human-induced threats and hazards. This research area is essential to building capabilities in sustaining structural protection, site planning, protective design efficiency, occupant safety, and response and recovery plans. This paper investigates experimental tests and finite element analysis (FEM) of thin A36 steel sheets subjected to blast. Six field blast tests were performed at standoff distances of 300 mm and 500 mm. The explosive charges comprised 334 g of bare Composition B, and the steel sheets were 2 mm thick. The experimental results, derived from the analysis of high-speed camera recordings of the blast events, were compared with FEM simulations conducted using Abaqus®/Explicit version 6.10. Three constitutive material models were considered in these simulations. First, the FEM simulation results were compared with experimental results. It was shown that the FEM analysis provided reliable results and was proven to be robust and cost-effective. Second, an extensive set of 460 additional numerical simulations was carried out as a parametric study involving varying standoff distances and steel sheet thicknesses. The results and methodologies presented in this paper offer valuable and original insights for engineers and researchers aiming to predict damage to steel structures during real detonation events and to design blast-resistant structures. Electric propulsion requires engines and transmission systems that run at higher speeds compared to combustion engines. For improving sustainability and environmental protection, biodegradable oils are suggested for the lubrication of high-speed gears that require particularly quick wetting of the steel surfaces. Newly developed promising candidates include short-chained polyalphaolefins. In the present work, a study on the applicability of such oil is presented and discussed with respect to different aging levels based on biodegradable properties. It focuses on the wettability of metallic surfaces investigated through time-resolved contact angle measurements. Carbon steels with different carbon contents and microstructures are selected as the most commonly used materials for gears. Effects of steel composition, surface roughness and oil oxidation are studied. The results show that in most cases, the application of biodegradable polyalphaolefins is not critical; however, a combination of steels with inhomogeneous microstructure, high surface roughness and aged oil can be critical because of limited wetting. The authors of this paper investigated the process parameters of high-speed laser cladding of TC4/AISI431 composite coatings on the surface of C45 steel, choosing laser power, scanning speed, and TC4 addition as the experimental factors, and porosity, microhardness, and corrosion resistance as the target indices. A regression model was established based on the response surface methodology BBD, and the reliability of the model was analyzed using an ANOVA. Then, the WOA was used for multi-objective optimization. The optimal parameter set was determined as follows: a laser power of 5315 W, a scanning speed of 378 mm/s, and a TC4 addition of 3.6%. The microstructure and surface elemental composition of the coating were analyzed. The results showed that the porosity reduced by 60% and that the corrosion resistance improved by 79.98%, while the microhardness remained essentially unchanged. Full article

High-strength steel has high strength and low thermal conductivity, and its thin-walled parts are very susceptible to residual stress and deformation caused by cutting heat during the drilling process, which affects the machining accuracy and quality. High-strength steel thin-walled components are widely used in aerospace and other high-end sectors; however, systematic investigations into their temperature fields during drilling remain scarce, particularly regarding the evolution characteristics of the temperature field in thin-wall drilling and the quantitative relationship between drilling parameters and these temperature variations. This paper takes the thin-walled parts of AF1410 high-strength steel as the research object, designs a special fixture, and applies infrared thermography to measure the bottom surface temperature in the thin-walled drilling process in real time; this is carried out in order to study the characteristics of the temperature field during the thin-walled drilling process of high-strength steel, as well as the influence of the drilling dosage on the temperature field of the bottom surface. The experimental findings are as follows: in the process of thin-wall drilling of high-strength steel, the temperature field of the bottom surface of the workpiece shows an obvious temperature gradient distribution; before the formation of the drill cap, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is distributed in the central circular area corresponding to the extrusion of the transverse edge during the drilling process, and the highest temperature of the bottom surface can be approximated as the temperature of the extrusion friction zone between the top edge of the drill and the workpiece when the top edge of the drill bit drills to a position close to the bottom surface of the workpiece and increases with the increase in the drilling speed and the feed volume; during the process of drilling, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is approximated as the temperature of the top edge of the drill bit and the workpiece. The maximum temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece in the drilling process increases nearly linearly with the drilling of the drill, and the slope of the maximum temperature increases nearly linearly with the increase in the drilling speed and feed, in which the influence of the feed on the slope of the maximum temperature increases is larger than that of the drilling speed. In this study, a novel direct laser beam turning (DLBT) approach is proposed for the precision machining of AISI 308L austenitic stainless steel, which eliminates the need for cutting tools and thereby eradicates tool wear and vibration-induced surface irregularities. A nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG fiber laser (λ = 1064 nm, spot size = 0.05 mm) was used, and Ø1.6 mm × 20 mm cylindrical rods were processed under ambient conditions without auxiliary cooling. The experimental framework systematically evaluated the influence of scanning speed, pulse frequency, and the number of laser passes on dimensional accuracy and material removal efficiency. The results indicate that a maximum diameter reduction of 0.271 mm was achieved at a scanning speed of 3200 mm/s and 50 kHz, whereas 0.195 mm was attained at 6400 mm/s and 200 kHz. A robust second-order polynomial correlation (R2 = 0.99) was established between diameter reduction and the number of passes, revealing the high predictability of the process. Crucially, when the scanning speed was doubled, the effective fluence was halved, considerably influencing the ablation characteristics. Despite the low fluence, evidence of material evaporation at elevated frequencies due to the incubation effect underscores the complex photothermal dynamics governing the process. This work constitutes the first comprehensive quantification of pass-dependent diameter modulation in DLBT and introduces a transformative, noncontact micromachining strategy for hard-to-machine alloys. The demonstrated precision, repeatability, and thermal control position DLBT as a promising candidate for next-generation manufacturing of high-performance miniaturized components. Full article

This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies concerning laser heat treatment (LHT) of structural and tool steels, with particular attention to the 21NiCrMo2 steel used for carburized gear wheels. Analysis includes the influence of critical laser processing conditions—including power output, motion speed, spot size, and focusing distance—on surface microhardness, hardening depth, and microstructure development. The findings indicate that the energy density is the dominant factor that affects the outcomes of LHT. Optimal results, in the form of a high surface microhardness and a sufficient depth of hardening, were achieved within the energy density range of 80–130 J/mm2, allowing for martensitic transformation while avoiding defects such as melting or cracking. At densities below 50 J/mm2, incomplete hardening occurred with minimal microhardness improvement. On the contrary, densities exceeding 150–180 J/mm2 caused surface overheating and degradation. For carburized 21NiCrMo2 steel, the most effective parameters included 450–1050 W laser power, 1.7–2.5 mm/s scanning speed, and 2.0–2.3 mm beam diameter. The review confirms that process control through energy-based parameters allows for reliable prediction and optimization of LHT for industrial applications, particularly in components exposed to cyclic loads. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an advanced additive manufacturing technology that is gaining increasing interest for biomedical implants because it can produce dense, patient-specific metallic components with controlled microstructures. This study investigated the LPBF fabrication of 316L stainless steel, which is widely used in orthopedic and dental implants, and examined the effects of laser power and scanning speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties relevant to biomedical applications. The study achieved 99.97% density and refined columnar and cellular austenitic grains, with optimized molten pool morphology. The optimal LPBF parameters, 190 W laser power and 700 mm/s, produced a tensile strength of 762.83 MPa and hardness of 253.07 HV0.2, which exceeded the values of conventional cast 316L stainless steel. These results demonstrated the potential of optimized LPBF 316L stainless steel for functional biomedical applications that require high mechanical integrity and biocompatibility. Full article

In order to improve the lubrication efficiency in the bearing cavity, this study establishes a simulation model of the fluid domain of the bearing cavity based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and systematically studies the flow characteristics of the lubricant and its lubrication mechanism in the high-speed rotary bearing. In the process of high-speed bearing operation, the lubricant is subject to the combined effect of centrifugal force and contact pressure, gradually spreads to both sides of the steel ball, and forms a stable oil film after injection from the nozzle. However, due to the influence of high pressure distribution in the contact area, the actual formation of the oil film coverage is relatively limited. In order to further optimize the lubrication effect, this study focuses on investigating the influence law of different injection speeds and rotational speeds on the bearing air curtain effect. The results of the study show that when the air curtain effect is enhanced, there will be significant shear interference on the trajectory of the lubricant, which is manifested in the phenomenon of “buckling” at the end of the lubricant, thus reducing the lubrication efficiency. To address this problem, this study innovatively proposes the air curtain obstruction coefficient K as a quantitative evaluation index, and through numerical simulation, it is found that the lubricant can effectively overcome the air curtain obstruction and achieve a better lubrication coverage when the value of K is reduced to below 0.4. Based on this finding, the study further confirmed that the lubrication efficiency of bearings can be significantly improved under different operating conditions by rationally regulating the injection rate. A Possibility of Tribological Investigation of Physicochemical Processes in a Friction Pair Operating Under Selective Transfer Conditions

The physicochemical processes that occur during selective transfer in the contact area of a bronze/steel friction pair lubricated with glycerin are experimentally studied by the polarization method to observe how they influence the tribological properties (friction and wear) of the pair. The proposed method allows for the study of tribochemical transformations of glycerin and the friction pair materials during the work process with selective transfer. The analysis of the experimental results allows for the establishment of the conditions for a stable and stationary selective transfer during the operation of the bronze/steel pair, by friction, at which the friction coefficient (COF) values and wear are low. This was achieved by implementing continuous lubrication with fresh glycerin in the contact area, choosing the optimal flow rate, and maintaining an optimal ratio between glycerin and the chemical transformation products, within well-established limits, to avoid undesirable consequences. Acrolein, as a product of chemical transformation (resulting from the catalytic dehydration of glycerin), is the most important for the initiation and stability of the selective transfer, and as the main reaction product, also represents a pathway of regeneration. Thus, it was found that the friction relative moments and the acrolein concentration presented conclusive/specific results at loads of 4–15 MPa and a sliding speed of 0.3 m/s. The optimum lubricant entry speed is 15–30 mg/min, for a minimum COF and reduced wear (about 0.028–0.03 at relatively high operating temperatures (45 and 60 °C)), and at low temperatures (30 °C) the minimum COF is about 0.038, but the lubricant inlet entry speed increases considerably, by around 1000 mg/min. Therefore, this paper aims to demonstrate the possibility of moving to another stage of practical use of a friction pair (with greatly improved tribological properties) that operates with selective transfer, much different from the ones still present, using a lubricant with special properties (glycerin). The research method used (polarization) highlights the physicochemical properties, tribochemical transformations of the lubricant, and the friction pair materials present in the contact area, for the understanding, maintenance, and stability of selective transfer, based on experiments, as a novelty compared to other studies. Laser beam powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M, or simply L-PBF) has emerged as one of the most competitive additive manufacturing technologies for producing complex metallic components with high precision, design freedom, and minimal material waste. Among the various categories of additive manufacturing processes, L-PBF stands out, paving the way for the execution of part designs with geometries previously considered unfeasible. Despite offering several advantages, parts with overhang features require the use of support structures to provide dimensional stability of the part. Support structures achieve this by resisting residual stresses generated during processing and assisting heat dissipation. Although the scientific community acknowledges the role of support structures in the success of L-PBF manufacturing, they have remained relatively underexplored in the literature. In this context, the present work investigated the impact of laser power and scanning speed on the dimensioning, integrity and tensile strength of single-walled block type support structures manufactured in AISI 316L stainless steel. The method proposed in this work is divided in two stages: processing parameter exploration, and mechanical characterization. The results indicated that support structures become more robust and resistant as laser power increases, and the opposite effect is observed with an increment in scanning speed. In addition, defects were detected at the interfaces between the bulk and support regions, which were crucial for the failure of the tensile test specimens. For a layer thickness corresponding to 0.060 mm, it was verified that the combination of laser power and scanning speed of 150 W and 500 mm/s resulted in the highest tensile resistance while respecting the dimensional deviation requirement. The pull-back method for determining dynamic tensile strength assumes one-dimensional stress wave propagation and material homogeneity. This study validates these assumptions for unidirectional reinforced concrete (UDRC) through experiments and numerical simulations. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests were conducted on plain concrete, plain UDRC, and deformed UDRC specimens containing a central 6 mm steel bar. Ultra-high-speed digital image correlation at 500,000 fps enabled precise local strain rate measurements (3 s−1 to 55 s−1) at fracture locations. Finite element simulations revealed that while reinforcement induces localized multi-axial stresses near the steel–concrete interface, the bulk concrete maintains predominantly uniaxial stress conditions. Experimental results showed less than 1% variation in pull-back velocity between specimen types. Statistical analysis confirmed a unified strain rate-strength relationship: σspall=4.1+4.7log10(ε˙)MPa, independent of reinforcement configuration (ANCOVA: p=0.2182 for interaction term). The dynamic tensile strength is governed by concrete matrix properties rather than reinforcement type. These findings are the first to experimentally and numerically validate the pull-back method’s applicability to UDRC systems, establishing that dynamic tensile failure is matrix-dominated and enabling simplified one-dimensional analysis for reinforced concrete under impact. Recent advances in precision manufacturing and high-end equipment technologies have imposed ever more stringent requirements on the accuracy, real-time performance, and lightweight design of online steel strip surface defect detection systems. To reconcile the persistent trade-off between detection precision and inference efficiency in complex industrial environments, this study proposes StripSurface–YOLO, a novel real-time defect detection framework built upon YOLOv8n. The core architecture integrates an Efficient Cross-Stage Local Perception module (ResGSCSP), which synergistically combines GSConv lightweight convolutions with a one-shot aggregation strategy, thereby markedly reducing both model parameters and computational complexity. To further enhance multi-scale feature representation, this study introduces an Efficient Multi-Scale Attention (EMA) mechanism at the feature-fusion stage, enabling the network to more effectively attend to critical defect regions. Moreover, conventional nearest-neighbor upsampling is replaced by DySample, which produces deeper, high-resolution feature maps enriched with semantic content, improving both inference speed and fusion quality. To heighten sensitivity to small-scale and low-contrast defects, the model adopts Focal Loss, dynamically adjusting to sample difficulty. Extensive evaluations on the NEU-DET dataset demonstrate that StripSurface–YOLO reduces FLOPs by 11.6% and parameter count by 7.4% relative to the baseline YOLOv8n, while achieving respective improvements of 1.4%, 3.1%, 4.1%, and 3.0% in precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50:95. Under adverse conditions—including contrast variations, brightness fluctuations, and Gaussian noise—SteelSurface-YOLO outperforms the baseline model, delivering improvements of 5.0% in mAP50 and 4.7% in mAP50:95, attesting to the model’s robust interference resistance. These findings underscore the potential of StripSurface–YOLO to meet the rigorous performance demands of real-time surface defect detection in the metal forging industry. Full article

Accurate path tracking is crucial for greenhouse robots operating in complex environments. However, traditional curve tracking algorithms suffer from low tracking accuracy and large tracking errors. This study aim to develop a high precision greenhouse autonomous following robot, use ANSYS Workbench 19.2 to perform stress and deformation analysis on the robot, then propose a path tracking method based on Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) to optimize the pure tracking to ensure high precision curved path tracking for curved tracking, finally perform a comparative simulation analysis in MATLAB R2024a. The structural analysis shows that the maximum equivalent stress is 196 MPa and the maximum deformation is 1.73 mm under a load of 600 kg, which are within the yield limit of 45 steel. Simulation results demonstrate that at a speed of 2 m/s, the conventional Pure Pursuit algorithm incurs a maximum lateral error of 0.3418 m and a heading error of 0.2669 rad under high curvature conditions. By contrast, the LQR–Pure Pursuit algorithm reduces the peak lateral error to 0.0904 m and confines the heading error to approximately 0.0217 rad. Experimental validation yielded an RMSE of 0.018 m for lateral error and 0.016 m for heading error. These findings confirm that the designed robot can sustain its payload under most operating scenarios and that the proposed tracking strategy effectively suppresses deviations and improves path-following accuracy. High-speed trains have revolutionized modern transportation with their exceptional speeds, yet the essence of this technological breakthrough resides in the train’s wheels. These components are engineered to endure extreme mechanical stresses while ensuring high safety and reliability. In this paper, we selected the rim and web as representative components of the wheel and conducted a comprehensive and systematic study on their microstructure and mechanical properties. The wheels are typically produced through integral forging. To improve the mechanical performance of the wheel/rail contact surface (i.e., the tread), the rim is subjected to surface quenching or other heat treatments. This endows the rim with strength and hardness second only to the tread and lowers its ductility. This results in a more isotropic structure with improved fatigue resistance in low-cycle and high-cycle regimes under rotating bending. The web connects the wheel axle to the rim and retains the microstructure formed during the forging process. Its strength is lower than that of the rim, while its ductility is slightly better. The web satisfies current property standards, although the microstructure suggests further optimization may be achievable through heat treatment refinement. Full article
