Mango is highly sensitive to heat stress, which directly affects the yield and quality. The extreme heat waves of 2024, with temperatures reaching 41–47 °C over 25 days, caused significant impacts on sensitive cultivars. The impact of heat waves on ten commercial cultivars from subtropical regions viz.,‘Dashehari’, ‘Langra’, ‘Chausa’, ‘Bombay Green’, ‘Himsagar’, ‘Amrapali’, ‘Mallika’, ‘Sharda Bhog’, ‘Kesar’, and ‘Rataul’, and thirteen selected elite hybrids H-4208, H-3680, H-4505, H-3833, H-4504, H-1739, H-3623, H-1084, H-4264, HS-01, H-949, H-4065, and H-2805, is reported. The predominant effects that were observed include the following: burning symptoms or blackened tips, surrounded by a yellow halo, with premature ripening in affected parts and, in severe cases, tissue mummification. Among commercial cultivars, viz., ‘Amrapali’ (25%), ‘Mallika’ (30%), ‘Langra’ (30%), ‘Dashehari’ (50%), and ‘Himsagar’ and ‘Bombay Green’ had severe impacts, with ~80% of fruits being affected, followed by ‘Sharda Bhog’. In contrast, mid-maturing cultivars like ‘Kesar’, ‘Rataul’, and late-maturing elite hybrids, which were immature during the stress period, showed no symptoms, indicating they are tolerant. Biochemical analyses revealed significantly elevated total soluble solids (TSS > 25 °B) in affected areas of sensitive genotypes compared to non-affected tissues and tolerant genotypes. Aroma profiling indicated variations in compounds such as caryophyllene and humulene between affected and unaffected parts. The study envisages that the phenological maturity scales are indicators for the selection of climate-resilient mango varieties/hybrids and shows potential for future breeding programs. Full article

Solid fuels are still widely used in household heating in Europe and North America. Emissions from boilers are released in proximity to people. Therefore, there is a need to minimise the toxicity of emissions affecting human health to the greatest extent possible. This study compares the genotoxic potential of the emissions of four boilers of modern and old design (automatic, gasification, down-draft, over-fire) operating at reduced output to simulate the real-life combustion fed by various fossil and renewable solid fuels (hard coal, brown coal, brown coal briquettes, wood pellets, wet and dry spruce). Organic emissions were tested for genotoxic potential by analysing bulky DNA adducts and 8-oxo-dG adduct induction. There was no consistent genotoxic pattern among the fuels used within the boilers. Genotoxicity was strongly correlated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content, and even stronger correlation was observed with particulate matter (PM). In all measured variables (PM, PAHs, genotoxicity), the technology of the boilers was a more important factor in determining the genotoxic potential than the fuels burned. The highest levels of both bulky and 8-oxo-dG DNA adducts were induced by organics originating from the over-fire boiler, while the automatic boiler exhibited genotoxic potential that was ~1000- and 100-fold lower, respectively. The occurrence of haze pollution significantly deteriorates air quality and threatens human health, yet persistent knowledge gaps in real-time source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) hinder sustained improvements in atmospheric pollution conditions. Thus, this study employed single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) to investigate PM2.5 sources and dynamics during winter haze episodes in Yinchuan, Northwest China. Results showed that the average PM2.5 concentration was 57 μg·m−3, peaking at 218 μg·m−3. PM2.5 was dominated by organic carbon (OC, 17.3%), mixed carbonaceous particles (ECOC, 17.0%), and elemental carbon (EC, 14.3%). The primary sources were coal combustion (26.4%), fugitive dust (25.8%), and vehicle emissions (19.1%). Residential coal burning dominated coal emissions (80.9%), highlighting inefficient decentralized heating. Source contributions showed distinct diurnal patterns: coal combustion peaked nocturnally (29.3% at 09:00) due to heating and inversions, fugitive dust rose at night (28.6% at 19:00) from construction and low winds, and vehicle emissions aligned with traffic (17.5% at 07:00). Haze episodes were driven by synergistic increases in local coal (+4.0%), dust (+2.7%), and vehicle (+2.1%) emissions, compounded by regional transport (10.1–36.7%) of aged particles from northwestern zones. Fugitive dust correlated with sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) (p < 0.01), suggesting roles as carriers and reactive interfaces. Findings confirm local emission dominance with spatiotemporal heterogeneity and regional transport influence. SPAMS effectively resolved short-term pollution dynamics, providing critical insights for targeted air quality management in arid regions. Full article

This study investigates a lithium-ion battery failure in heating insoles that ignited during normal walking while powered off. Through comprehensive material characterization, electrical testing, thermal analysis, and mechanical gait simulation, we systematically excluded electrical or thermal abuse as failure causes. X-ray/CT imaging localized the ignition source to the lateral heel edge of the pouch cell, correlating precisely with peak mechanical stress identified through gait analysis. Remarkably, the cyclic load was less than 10% of the single crush load threshold specified in safety standards. Key findings reveal multiple contributing factors as follows: the uncoated polyethylene separator’s inability to prevent stress-induced internal short circuits, the circuit design’s lack of battery health monitoring functionality that permitted undetected degradation, and the hazardous placement inside clothing that exacerbated burn injuries. These findings necessitate a multi-level safety framework for lithium-ion battery products, encompassing enhanced cell design to prevent internal short circuit, improved circuit protection with health monitoring capabilities, optimized product integration to mitigate mechanical and environmental impact, and effective post-failure containment measures. This case study exposes a critical need for product-specific safety standards that address the unique demands of wearable lithium-ion batteries, where existing certification requirements fail to prevent real-use failure scenarios. Biomass burning processes affect many semi-rural areas in the Mediterranean, but there is a lack of long-term datasets focusing on their classification, obtained by monitoring carbonaceous particle concentrations and optical properties variations. To address this issue, a campaign to measure equivalent black carbon (eBC) and particle number size distributions (0.3–10 μm) was carried out from August 2019 to November 2020 at a coastal semi-rural site in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Long-term datasets were useful for aerosol characterization, helping to clearly identify traffic as a constant eBC source. For a shorter period, PM2.5 mass concentrations were also measured, allowing the estimation of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC), and chemical and SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis of aerosols collected on filters. This multi-instrumental approach enabled the discrimination among different biomass burning (BB) processes, and the analysis of three case studies related to domestic heating, regional smoke plume transport, and a local smoldering process. The AAE (Ångström absorption exponent) daily pattern was characterized as having a peak late in the morning and mean hourly values that were always higher than 1.3. Full article

This study evaluated the effects of conventional cigarette smoke compared to aerosol from a heat-non-burn tobacco product on the color stability of two UDMA-based dental composite resins, namely a monochromatic (Omnichroma) and a polychromatic (Vittra APS) resin. Twenty disc-shaped specimens were prepared, divided into two groups of ten, and exposed to 105 cigarettes or 105 aerosol tobacco sticks via a custom-made smoking chamber. Puff duration was 2 s, with a 60 s interval between puffs in which smoke saturated the chamber for 30 s; then, clean air was introduced into the chamber for 30 s. Six puffs and six intervals were simulated. Color parameters were measured before and after exposure and following brushing of each specimen with 15 strokes. Color differences were determined based on the CIEDE2000 formula. Significant color change was found in all specimens exposed to cigarette and tobacco aerosol. The highest color-change mean value was obtained from composite resin exposed to cigarette smoke. Although both cigarette and thermal heating systems cause discoloration, the aerosol causes reduced composite resin discoloration, which compromises aesthetics and increases patient dissatisfaction, impacting the overall dental care. Color stability is the hallmark of success, as it is the main reason for replacing dental restorations. Full article

Hydrogen–gasoline dual-fuel spark ignition (SI) engines represent a promising transitional solution toward cleaner combustion and reduced carbon emissions. In a previous study, a predictive engine model was developed to simulate the performance and combustion characteristics of such systems; however, its accuracy was constrained by the use of estimated combustion parameters. This study presents an experimental validation based on high-resolution in-cylinder pressure measurements performed on a naturally aspirated SI engine operating with a 20% hydrogen energy share. The objectives are twofold: (1) to refine the combustion model using empirically derived combustion metrics, and (2) to evaluate the feasibility of moderate hydrogen enrichment in a stock engine configuration. To facilitate a more accurate understanding of how key combustion parameters evolve under different operating conditions, Vibe function was fitted to the ensemble-averaged heat release rate curves computed from 100 consecutive engine cycles at each static full-load operating point. This approach enabled the extraction of stable and representative metrics, including the mass fraction burned at 50% (MFB50) and combustion duration, which were then used to recalibrate the predictive combustion model. In addition, cycle-to-cycle variation and combustion duration were also investigated in the dual-fuel mode. The combustion duration exhibited a consistent and substantial reduction across all of the examined operating points when compared to pure gasoline operation. Furthermore, the cycle-to-cycle variation difference remained statistically insignificant, indicating that the introduction of 20% hydrogen did not adversely affect combustion stability. In addition to improving model accuracy, this work investigates the occurrence of abnormal combustion phenomena—including backfiring, auto-ignition, and knock—under enriched conditions. The results confirm that 20% hydrogen blends can be safely utilized in standard engine architectures, yielding faster combustion and reduced burn durations. The validated model offers a reliable foundation for further dual-fuel optimization and supports the broader integration of hydrogen into conventional internal combustion platforms. Full article

In some regions, extreme heat can result in pavement temperatures that are high enough to cause severe burn injuries within seconds of skin contact. This risk is elevated for unhoused individuals who may lack adequate clothing and shelter and have susceptibility to other risk factors, including substance use and in turn loss of consciousness. While prior studies have shown worse outcomes for unhoused individuals due to delays in care and higher susceptibility, there is a lack of data on the impact of pavement burns specifically within this population. This single-institution retrospective cohort study aims to explore burn severity and hospital outcomes in housed vs. unhoused patients with pavement burns. The data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests and logistic regression when appropriate, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. A total of 305 individuals met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and comprised the final study cohort, 17.7% of which were unhoused. There was no significant difference in TBSA, survival to discharge, or hospital length of stay between housed and unhoused patients. While unhoused individuals may still be at heightened risk for pavement burns due to exposure to extreme heat and a lack of protective measures, these results may additionally suggest consistent emergency care for patients regardless of housing status. Furthermore, these results highlight the importance of developing targeted outreach and prevention programs and equitable emergency care protocols for vulnerable populations. Full article

Performance Assessment of Low- and Medium-Cost PM2.5 Sensors in Real-World Conditions in Central Europe

In addition to the use of reference instruments, low-cost sensors (LCSs) are becoming increasingly popular for air quality monitoring both indoors and outdoors. These sensors provide real-time measurements of pollutants and facilitate better spatial and temporal coverage. However, these simpler devices are typically characterised by lower accuracy and precision and can be more sensitive to the environmental conditions than the reference instruments. It is therefore crucial to characterise the applicability and limitations of these instruments, for which a possible solution is their comparison with reference measurements in real-world conditions. To this end, a measurement campaign has been carried out to evaluate the PM2.5 readings of several low- and medium-cost air quality instruments of different types and categories (IQAir AirVisual Pro, TSI DustTrak™ II Aerosol Monitor 8532, Xiaomi Mijia Air Detector, and Xiaomi Smartmi PM2.5 Air Detector). A GRIMM EDM180 instrument was used as the reference. This campaign took place in Budapest, Hungary, from 12 November to 15 December 2020, during typically humid and foggy weather conditions, when the air pollution level was high due to the increased anthropogenic emissions, including wood burning for heating purposes. The results indicate that the individual sensors tracked the dynamics of PM2.5 concentration changes well (in a linear fashion), but the readings deviated from the reference measurements to varying degrees. Even though the AirVisual sensors performed generally well (0.85 < R2 < 0.93), the accuracy of the units showed inconsistency (13–93%) with typical overestimation, and their readings were significantly affected by elevated relative humidity levels and by temperature. Despite the overall overestimation of PM2.5 by the Xiaomi sensors, they also exhibited strong correlation coefficients with the reference, with R2 values of 0.88 and 0.94. TSI sensors exhibited slight underestimations with high explained variance (R2 = 0.93–0.94) and good accuracy. The results indicated that despite the inherent bias, the low-cost sensors are capable of capturing the temporal variability of PM2.5, thus providing relevant information. After simple and multiple linear regression-based correction, the low-cost sensors provided acceptable results. The results indicate that sensor data correction is a necessary prerequisite for the usability of the instruments. The ensemble method is a reasonable alternative for more accurate estimations of PM2.5. Full article

Assessments of subway train fires were conducted based on full-scale experiments and numerical simulations. The experimental platform and simulation model were established according to a real subway train in China. The results show that there was no obvious flame spread, and all the electrical circuitry maintained its integrity during a standard luggage fire. The maximum HRR (heat release rate) of the luggage fire obtained through the full-scale experiment was 155.5 kW, which was almost the same as the standard HRR curve provided in EN 45545-1. However, the fire only lasted approximately 180 s, which was much shorter than a standard fire (600 s). Through numerical simulations of an entire subway train, the side wall and roof ignited quickly, and the fire continually spread to the adjacent compartment under the extreme scenario with a gasoline pool fire and exposed winterproof material. The maximum HRRs of the luggage and gasoline pool fires were 179.7 and 17,800.0 kW, respectively. According to the experimental and simulation results, the Duggan method, which assumes that all combustibles inside a train compartment burn at the same time, was not appropriate for assessing the fires in the subway train, and a simple revised frame was proposed instead. Understanding indoor black carbon (BC) dynamics is important for assessing human exposure and informing air quality management in residential settings. This study presents a high-resolution, multi-sensor dataset collected over 24 days in a semi-occupied home in Zagreb, Croatia, designed to characterize the temporal behavior and sources of indoor BC. Indoor BC concentrations were measured at 1 min resolution using a dual-spot aethalometer, with source apportionment into biomass burning and fossil fuel components. Complementary contextual data including motion detection, door and window states, and traffic activity were collected in parallel using smart sensors and annotated experimental logs. Across the monitoring period, daily mean BC concentrations ranged from 174.7 and 1053.1 ng/m3 for biomass burning BC and between 53.2 and 880.3 ng/m3 for fossil fuel component. Statistical analyses revealed significant increases in BC concentrations during direct combustion-related activities, including scented candle burning and gas burner use. Additional BC elevations were associated with mechanical heat sources and nearby vehicle traffic, particularly affecting the fossil fuel BC component. In contrast, non-combustion activities such as brief human presence exhibited minor or inconsistent effects on indoor BC levels. This study elucidates the primary role of combustion-based indoor activities in influencing short-term BC exposure and highlights the importance of synchronized, high-resolution datasets for indoor air quality research. Tobacco control policies have aimed to reduce the global prevalence of smoking. Unfortunately, the recent survey data shows that about 24% of Europeans still smoke. Although combustible cigarettes remain the most used tobacco product, the tendency made evident in the prevalence of smoking-alternative nicotine-containing products increases. Studies that can objectively assess the long-term health effects of the latter products are lacking, so assessing toxic substances associated with smoking-alternative products and comparing them to substances from combustible cigarettes could inform future public health efforts. The manufacturers of these alternative products claim that the use of alternatives to combustible cigarettes reduces exposure to toxic compounds, but the reality is unclear. This study compares the concentrations of toxic substances in generated aerosols and performs calculations based on mainstream cigarette smoke and aerosols from smoking-alternative products. It summarizes the amounts of harmful and potentially harmful constituents per single puff. Alternative smoking products are undoubtedly harmful to non-smokers. Still, based on the analysis of the latest independent studies’ empirical data, the concentrations of inhaled HPHCs using heated tobacco products or e-cigarettes are reduced up to 91–98%, respectively; therefore, for those who cannot quit, these could provide a less harmful alternative. However, more well-designed studies of alternative product emissions are needed, including an analysis of the compounds that are not present in conventional tobacco products (e.g., thermal degradation products of propylene glycol, glycerol, or flavorings) to evaluate possible future health effects objectively. Development of Silylated Lignin-Based Intumescent Flame Retardants for Biodegradable Plastics

The global market for flame-retardant materials is expected to grow steadily, from USD 7.0 billion in 2022 to USD 16.6 billion in 2030, driven by increasing demand for environment-friendly fire safety solutions in transportation, construction, and electronics. Polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer which possesses excellent mechanical properties, is increasingly being considered for future mobility applications. However, it is characterized by high heat release and toxic smoke during combustion, which are significant drawbacks. In order to address this, the chemical modification of Kraft lignin was achieved through a phenolation and subsequent silylation with tetraethoxysilane, aiming to mitigate the degradation of PLA’s mechanical properties while utilizing its inherent char-forming ability. The modified lignins were combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and melt-mixed with PLA using an injection-mixing molder to prepare test specimens. Analysis by FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and SEM-EDS confirmed successful grafting of phenolic and silane functionalities, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability of the modified lignins compared to unmodified ones. Vertical burning tests and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements showed that the PLA/APP/SPKL composite material achieved a V-0 UL-94 rating and 31.95% LOI, demonstrating the highest level of flame retardancy. This compares to the LOI of neat PLA, 19 to 21%. Despite the enhancement in flame retardancy to the V-0 level, the decline in tensile strength was limited, and the composite retained comparable mechanical strength to PLA-APP composites with V-2 flame retardancy. The findings indicate that the combination of phenolation and silylation of lignin with APP, a flame-retardant material, offers a viable and sustainable methodology for the fabrication of PLA composites that exhibit both flame retardancy and mechanical strength. The subtropics are affected by severe climate change, which may induce heat stress in animals. Moreover, the region is significantly seasonal; hence, mitigating climate risks and implementing climate adaptation measures are necessary. Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, and 13 call for no poverty, zero hunger, and climate action. These are the most severe problems affecting food security in the modern world. Food security refers to a situation in which all people have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, proper, and healthy food that satisfies their dietary requirements. Nevertheless, the projected increase in the human population implies a greater demand for employment opportunities; hence, developing countries are building more industrial areas. The burning of fossil fuels in various industries potentiates climate change and environmental pollution. It is predicted that the ecological temperature will increase by almost 2.3–4.8 °C by 2100 due to climate change. Agriculture and animal products remain vital in Africa as drivers of the economy and transformation for sustainable livelihood and development. Sheep production has long been used as a source of income and livelihood and provides jobs for people who live in rural areas. It is also sometimes used for ritual ceremonies and to pay penalties to local authorities. Nevertheless, sheep have been identified to be sensitive to heat stress, characterized by low reproductive performance, low microbiota quantities, and poor general health. There are different strategies for mitigating heat stress; however, many smallholder farmers have limited access to education and lack the financial support required to incorporate artificial shade and plant trees for shade to limit heat stress. In this review, we aim to understand the effects of environmental heat stress on sheep production and reproductive performance. Based on this review, it can be concluded that heat stress can threaten food security if not addressed, especially for farmers who depend on sheep rearing. As a result, future studies are recommended to understand different adaptation methods that can be used to mitigate the heat stress effect on sheep productivity, reproductivity, and general health. Hydrogen-powered aircraft constitute a transformative innovation in aviation, motivated by the imperative for sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. This paper aims to concentrate on the design of hydrogen powertrains employing a system approach to propose representative design models for distribution and propulsion systems. Initially, the requirements for powertrain design are formalized, and a use-case-driven analysis is conducted to determine the functional and physical architectures. Subsequently, for each component pertinent to preliminary design, an analytical model is proposed for multidisciplinary analysis and optimization for powertrain sizing. A double-wall pipe model, incorporating foam and vacuum multi-layer insulation, was developed. The internal and outer pipes sizing were performed in accordance with standards for hydrogen piping design. Valves sizing is also considered in the present study, following current standards and using data available in the literature. Furthermore, models for booster pumps to compensate pressure drop and high-pressure pumps to elevate pressure at the combustion chamber entrance are proposed. Heat exchanger and evaporator models are also included and connected to a burning hydrogen engine in the sizing process. An optimal liner pipe diameter was identified, which minimizes distribution systems weight. We also expect a reduction in engine length and weight while maintaining equivalent thrust. Full article
