Sense of Coherence and Perceived Academic Stress Among Nursing Students: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Nursing students often face high academic and emotional demands, which can negatively affect both their mental health and academic performance. From a salutogenic perspective, the sense of coherence (SOC) is considered a key protective factor in managing stress and fostering resilience. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the SOC levels among nursing students and examine their associations with perceived academic stress and sociodemographic variables. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional, exploratory study was conducted in a sample of 1301 undergraduate nursing students from four universities in Spain and Chile. Participants completed the Orientation to Life Questionnaire, a validated instrument assessing SOC and its three dimensions: comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. Sociodemographic data and students’ perceived stress in relation to key academic activities were also collected. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed, including t-tests and ANOVA. Results: The mean SOC score was 62.65 (SD = 12.36), with no significant differences between universities. Significant associations (p < 0.05) were found between SOC scores and age, marital status, academic year, work status, and university entry path, but not with gender or caregiving responsibilities. Students aged ≥29 years and those who were married or working had higher SOC scores. Higher levels of perceived stress in lectures, seminars, clinical practice, group work, and written assignments were significantly associated with lower SOC scores. Conclusions: This study’s findings suggest that a stronger SOC is associated with lower perceived academic stress and certain sociodemographic characteristics. Integrating salutogenic approaches into nursing curricula could strengthen students’ SOC, promoting their mental well-being and academic resilience. Full article

(1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Oman, necessitating targeted healthcare planning and patient support. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on MS management and disease course, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19, psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic, and demographic and clinical predictors of the effects related to COVID-19 among Omani PwMS. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021. Adult (18–60 years) Omani PwMS completed a structured interview along with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and World Health Organization Well-being Index (WHO-5). Clinical data on relapses and disease-modifying therapies and adherence were analyzed. The data was statistically analyzed. (3) Results: Of 104 PwMS (73.1% female), 22.1% contracted COVID-19, with fatigue being the most reported symptom (87%). Female sex (p = 0.042), younger age (18–34 vs. 35–45 years; p = 0.014), diagnosis of COVID-19 (p = 0.037), and low current mental well-being scores (p = 0.021) predicted greater COVID-19-related effects. (4) Conclusion: These findings highlight the need to study the mental resilience of this subgroup of PwMS and provide them with targeted support during crises. Full article

Fibromyalgia has unclear etiopathogenesis, no curative treatment, and a severe impact on the quality of life. Gratitude practices have been shown to enhance the quality of life in chronic diseases. This systematic review, performed by searching five electronic databases, following the PRISMA guidelines, is the first aiming to evaluate the impact of gratitude in fibromyalgia. Data from eligible studies was extracted and a narrative synthesis was performed. Six articles (four observational studies and two randomized clinical trials) were included. Higher levels of gratitude are associated with reduced symptom severity, an enhanced quality of life, improved well-being, and the improvement of pain-related outcomes in fibromyalgia patients. Gratitude is related to reduced stress, anxiety, and depression; better sleep patterns; and less functional impairment in FM patients. Higher levels of gratitude contribute to a better quality of life, general well-being, and higher functioning capacity in fibromyalgia patients. Based on the results gathered in this systematic review, we propose that gratitude should be investigated as a therapeutic adjuvant in the management of fibromyalgia. Full article

Plastic waste, particularly poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), negatively impacts the environment and human health. Biotechnology could become an alternative to managing PET waste if enzymes ensure the recovery of terephthalic acid with efficiencies comparable to those of chemical treatments. Recent research has highlighted the potential of fungal cutinases, such as wild-type ANCUT1 (ANCUT1wt) from Aspergillus nidulans, in achieving PET depolymerization. Fungal cutinases’ structures differ from those of bacterial cutinases, while their PET depolymerization mechanism has not been well studied. Here, a reliable model of the ANCUT1wt was obtained using AlphaFold 2.0. Computational chemistry revealed potential cation-binding sites, which had not been described regarding enzymatic activation in fungal cutinases. Moreover, it allowed the prediction of residues with the ability to interact with a PET trimer that were mutation candidates to engineer the substrate binding cleft, seeking enhancements of PET hydrolysis. Enzyme kinetics revealed that both ANCUT1wt and ANCUT1N73V/L171Q (DM) were activated by MgCl2, increasing the dissociation constant of the substrate and maximal reaction rate. We found that in the presence of MgCl2, DM hydrolyzed different PET samples and released 9.1-fold more products than ANCUT1wt. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed a different hydrolysis mode of these enzymes, influenced by the polymer’s crystallinity and structure. Full article

Armed conflict poses a significant threat to the mental health of youth worldwide. This study focused on the role of teachers as protective agents fostering resilience among their students. The study examined the moderating effects of teachers’ personal well-being and their efficacy in the school on relations between their students’ armed conflict exposure and student psychiatric symptoms. Participants included 1260 students and their homeroom teachers from 62 8–11th grade classes. Using self-report standardized measures, teachers reported their life satisfaction and sense of efficacy while students reported their armed conflict exposure and psychiatric symptoms. Data were analyzed using a multilevel modeling (MLM) approach. Findings revealed positive correlations between student armed conflict exposure and psychiatric symptoms. In the between-class level of analysis, teacher personal life satisfaction and efficacy in participation in the school system emerged as protective factors for the students, significantly moderating relations between student exposure and their psychiatric symptoms. However, teacher efficacy in class management showed no significant moderating effect on student mental-health difficulties. Results highlight the importance of supporting teachers in conflict-affected environments and emphasize the need for preventive and therapeutic initiatives that prioritize teacher well-being and organizational resources to enhance teachers’ capacity to foster student resilience. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are complex, multifactorial disorders with no known cure, necessitating lifelong care and often leading to surgical interventions. This ongoing healthcare requirement, coupled with the increased use of biological drugs and rising disease prevalence, significantly increases the financial burden on the healthcare systems. Thus, a number of novel technological approaches have emerged in order to face some of the pivotal questions still associated with IBD. In navigating the intricate landscape of IBD, biosensors act as indispensable allies, bridging the gap between traditional diagnostic methods and the evolving demands of precision medicine. Continuous progress in biosensor technology holds the key to transformative breakthroughs in IBD management, offering more effective and patient-centric healthcare solutions considering the One Health Approach. Here, we will delve into the landscape of biomarkers utilized in the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of IBD. From well-established serological and fecal markers to emerging genetic and epigenetic markers, we will explore the role of these biomarkers in aiding clinical decision-making and predicting treatment response. Additionally, we will discuss the potential of novel biomarkers currently under investigation to further refine disease stratification and personalized therapeutic approaches in IBD. By elucidating the utility of biosensors across the spectrum of IBD care, we aim to highlight their importance as valuable tools in optimizing patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Effects of a Positive Psychology Intervention on Mental Health and Well-Being Among Mothers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Background: Concerns over women’s mental health have intensified globally, especially among mothers managing dual careers and family responsibilities. Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs), such as gratitude journaling and well-being workshops, have demonstrated promise in enhancing mental health; however, their applicability in Arab contexts remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of PPIs on mothers’ well-being, gratitude, depression, anxiety, and stress in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest study assessed the effects of a four-week PPI on 37 Saudi working mothers (aged 21–50 years) employed at a private school in Riyadh. The intervention included guided gratitude journaling thrice weekly and two workshops on positive psychology and gratitude. Pre- and post-intervention assessments used validated Arabic versions of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), WHO-5 Well-being Index, and Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6). Results: Significant improvements were found post-intervention: depression, anxiety, and stress scores decreased (p < 0.001), while well-being and gratitude increased (p = 0.001). However, participants with lower household income (<50,000 SAR) showed less improvement, indicating a potential moderating effect of socioeconomic status. Conclusions: The intervention demonstrated promising short-term improvements in mental health and well-being among Saudi mothers. The findings underscore the importance of culturally appropriate PPIs and highlight the need for further research using controlled, long-term designs. Limitations include the small, non-random sample, absence of a control group, and restriction to a single geographic region. Full article

Integrating BIM curriculum into traditional construction management (CM) programs is essential to meet the increasing industry demand for BIM-ready graduates. However, academia struggles with BIM curriculum integration due to unfamiliar emerging BIM technologies, and the increased workload associated with curriculum transformation. Disciplines including nursing, health science, and medical overcame the same challenges using the ability-desire-knowledge-ability-reinforcement (ADKAR) change management model, while CM programs have not explored this model for BIM curriculum development. Thus, this research introduces the ADKAR change management lens to BIM curriculum development by proposing a practically modified and replicable ADKAR model for CM programs. Focus group interviews with 14 academics from the UK, USA, Korea, and Australia, revealed establishing a sense of urgency by appointing a BIM champion is the most critical step before the BIM curriculum development. Instant advice demystifying uncertain BIM concepts is recognised the most effective motivation among academia. Well-balanced BIM concept integrations is ‘sine qua non’ since excessively saturating BIM aspects across the program can dilute students’ essential domain knowledge. Students’ evaluation over the BIM curriculum were collected through a six-year longitudinal focus group interviews, revealing that progressive BIM learnings scaffolded from foundational concepts to advanced applications throughout their coursework is the most valuable. Background/Objectives: Health education plays a vital role in training health professionals and caregivers, supporting both prevention and the promotion of self-care. In this context, technology serves as a valuable ally by enabling continuous and flexible learning. Among the various domains of health education, nutrition stands out as a key element in the management of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), helping to prevent malnutrition and enhance patient well-being. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes within a learning pathway focused on food and nutrition in the context of ALS. Methods: This study adopted a longitudinal, quantitative design. The learning pathway, titled “Food and Nutrition in ALS,” consisted of four self-paced and self-instructional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), offered through the Virtual Learning Environment of the Brazilian Health System (AVASUS). Participants included health professionals, caregivers, and patients from all five regions of Brazil. Participants had the autonomy to complete the courses in any order, with no prerequisites for enrollment. Results: Out of 14,263 participants enrolled nationwide, 182 were included in this study after signing the Informed Consent Form. Of these, 142 (78%) completed at least one course and participated in the educational intervention. A significant increase in knowledge was observed, with mean pre-test scores rising from 7.3 (SD = 1.8) to 9.6 (SD = 0.9) on the post-test across all courses (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The self-instructional, technology-mediated continuing education model proved effective in improving participants’ knowledge about nutrition in ALS. Future studies should explore knowledge retention, behavior change, and the impact of such interventions on clinical outcomes, especially in multidisciplinary care settings. Full article

Background/Objective: The use of artificial intelligence to assist in medical applications is an emerging area of investigation and discussion. The researchers studied whether there was a difference between homeopathy guidance provided by artificial intelligence (AI) (automated) and live professional practitioners (live) for acute illnesses. Additionally, the study explored the practical challenges associated with validating AI tools used for homeopathy and sought to generate insights on the potential value and limitations of these tools in the management of acute health complaints. Method: Randomly selected cases at a homeopathy teaching clinic (n = 100) were entered into a commercially available homeopathic remedy finder to investigate the consistency between automated and live recommendations. Client symptoms, medical disclaimers, remedies, and posology were compared. The findings of this study show that the purpose-built homeopathic remedy finder is not a one-to-one replacement for a live practitioner. Result: In the 100 cases compared, the automated online remedy finder provided between 1 and 20 prioritized remedy recommendations for each complaint, leaving the user to make the final remedy decision based on how well their characteristic symptoms were covered by each potential remedy. The live practitioner-recommended remedy was included somewhere among the auto-mated results in 59% of the cases, appeared in the top three results in 37% of the cases, and was a top remedy match in 17% of the cases. There was no guidance for managing remedy responses found in live clinical settings. Conclusion: This study also highlights the challenge and importance of validating AI remedy recommendations against real cases. The automated remedy finder used covered 74 acute complaints. The live cases from the teaching clinic included 22 of the 74 complaints. Full article

Honey is a natural product of honeybees that has been consumed for centuries due to its nutritional value and potential health benefits. Recent scientific research has focused on its antioxidant capacity, which is linked to a variety of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, enzymes (e.g., glucose oxidase, catalase), flavonoids, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, amino acids, and proteins. Together, these components work synergistically to neutralize free radicals, regulate antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduce oxidative stress. This review decisively outlines the antioxidant effects of honey and presents compelling clinical and experimental evidence supporting its critical role in preventing diseases associated with oxidative stress. Honey stands out for its extensive health benefits, which include robust protection against cardiovascular issues, notable anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects, enhanced glycemic control in diabetes, immune modulation, neuroprotection, and effective wound healing. As a recognized functional food and dietary supplement, honey is essential for the prevention and adjunct treatment of chronic diseases. However, it faces challenges due to variations in composition linked to climatic conditions, geographical and floral sources, as well as hive management practices. The limited number of large-scale clinical trials further underscores the need for more research. Future studies must focus on elucidating honey’s antioxidant mechanisms, standardizing its bioactive compounds, and examining its synergistic effects with other natural antioxidants to fully harness its potential. Background/Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly transformed social life worldwide, indiscriminately affecting individuals across all age groups. Children have not been exempted from the risk of severe illness and death caused by COVID-19. Objective: This paper sought to describe the clinical findings, laboratory and imaging results, and hospital care provided for severe and critical cases of COVID-19 in unvaccinated children, with or without severe asthma, hospitalized in a public referral service for COVID-19 treatment in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Methods: This was a case series study of severe and critical COVID-19 in hospitalized, unvaccinated children, with or without severe asthma, conducted in a public referral hospital between March 2020 and June 2021. Results: The case series included 80 children, aged from 1 month to 11 years, with the highest frequency among those under 2 years old (58.8%) and a predominance of males (65%). Respiratory diseases, including severe asthma, were present in 73.8% of the cases. Pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome occurred in 15% of the children, some of whom presented with cardiac involvement. Oxygen therapy was required in 65% of the cases, mechanical ventilation in 15%, and 33.7% of the children required intensive care in a pediatric intensive care unit. Pulmonary infiltrates and ground-glass opacities were common findings on chest X-rays and CT scans; inflammatory markers were elevated, and the most commonly used medications were antibiotics, bronchodilators, and corticosteroids. Conclusions: This case series has identified key characteristics of children with severe and critical COVID-19 during a period when vaccines were not yet available in Brazil for the study age group. However, the persistence of low vaccination coverage, largely due to parental vaccine hesitancy, continues to leave children vulnerable to potentially severe illness from COVID-19. These findings may inform the development of public health emergency contingency plans, as well as clinical protocols and care pathways, which can guide decision-making in pediatric care and ensure appropriate clinical management, ultimately improving the quality of care provided. Background: Brain health is a growing public health priority due to the high global burden of neurological and mental disorders. Promoting brain health across the lifespan supports individual and societal well-being, creativity, and productivity. Objective: To address the need for specialized education in this field, the University of Bern developed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Brain Health. This article outlines the program’s rationale, structure, and goals. Program Description: The one-year, 15 ECTS-credit program is primarily online and consists of four modules: (1) Introduction to Brain Health, (2) Brain Disorders, (3) Risk Factors, Protective Factors and Interventions, and (4) Brain Health Implementation. It offers a multidisciplinary, interprofessional, life-course approach, integrating theory with practice through case studies and interactive sessions. Designed for healthcare and allied professionals, the CAS equips participants with skills to promote brain health in clinical, research, and public health contexts. Given the shortage of trained professionals in Europe and globally, the program seeks to build a new generation of brain health advocates. It aims to inspire action and initiatives that support the prevention, early detection, and management of brain disorders. Conclusions: The CAS in Brain Health is an innovative educational response to a pressing global need. By fostering interdisciplinary expertise and practical skills, it enhances professional development and supports improved brain health outcomes at individual and population levels. Full article

Leveraging and Harnessing Generative Artificial Intelligence to Mitigate the Burden of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) in Children

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) significantly impact children’s health and development. They pose a substantial burden to families and the healthcare system. Challenges in early identification, accurate and timely diagnosis, and effective treatment persist due to overlapping symptoms, lack of appropriate diagnostic biomarkers, significant stigma and discrimination, and systemic barriers. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) offers promising solutions to these challenges by enhancing screening, diagnosis, personalized treatment, and research. Although GenAI is already in use in some aspects of NDD management, effective and strategic leveraging of evolving AI tools and resources will enhance early identification and screening, reduce diagnostic processing by up to 90%, and improve clinical decision support. Proper use of GenAI will ensure individualized therapy regimens with demonstrated 36% improvement in at least one objective attention measure compared to baseline and 81–84% accuracy relative to clinician-generated plans, customize learning materials, and deliver better treatment monitoring. GenAI will also accelerate NDD-specific research and innovation with significant time savings, as well as provide tailored family support systems. Finally, it will significantly reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with NDDs. This article explores the potential of GenAI in transforming NDD management and calls for policy initiatives to integrate GenAI into NDD management systems. Full article

Bisphenol E Neurotoxicity in Zebrafish Larvae: Effects and Underlying Mechanisms

As typical environmental hormones, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a global environmental health issue of high concern due to their property of interfering with the endocrine systems of organisms. As a commonly used substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol E (BPE) has been frequently detected in environmental matrices such as soil and water in recent years. Existing research has unveiled the developmental and reproductive toxicity of BPE; however, only one in vitro cellular experiment has preliminarily indicated potential neurotoxic risks, with its underlying mechanisms remaining largely unelucidated in the current literature. Potential toxic mechanisms and action targets of BPE were predicted using the zebrafish model via network toxicology and molecular docking, with RT-qPCRs being simultaneously applied to uncover neurotoxic effects and associated mechanisms of BPE. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the frequency of embryonic spontaneous movements was observed in zebrafish at exposure concentrations ≥ 0.01 mg/L. At 72 hpf and 144 hpf, the larval body length began to shorten significantly from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L, respectively (p < 0.01), accompanied by a reduced neuronal fluorescence intensity and a shortened neural axon length (p < 0.01). By 144 hpf, the motor behavior in zebrafish larvae was inhibited. Through network toxicology and molecular docking, HSP90AB1 was identified as the core target, with the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway determined to be the primary route through which BPE induces neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae. BPE induces neuronal apoptosis and disrupts neurodevelopment by inhibiting the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway, ultimately suppressing the larval motor behavior. To further validate the experimental outcomes, we measured the expression levels of genes associated with neurodevelopment (elavl3, mbp, gap43, syn2a), serotonergic synaptic signaling (5-ht1ar, 5-ht2ar), the cGMP/PKG pathway (nos3), and apoptosis (caspase-3, caspase-9). These results offer crucial theoretical underpinnings for evaluating the ecological risks of BPE and developing environmental management plans, as well as crucial evidence for a thorough comprehension of the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPE on neurodevelopment in zebrafish larvae.
