The gut microbiome is a modifiable factor in cancer survivorship. Diet represents the most practical intervention for modulating the gut microbiome. However, diet–microbiome relationships in prostate-cancer survivors remain poorly characterized. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of diet–microbiome associations in 79 prostate-cancer survivors (ages 62–81) enrolled in a randomized exercise intervention trial, 59.5% of whom still have active metastatic disease. Dietary intake was assessed using the Diet History Questionnaire (201 variables) and analyzed using three validated dietary pattern scores: Mediterranean Diet Adherence Score (MEDAS), Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), and the Mediterranean-Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet score. Gut microbiome composition was characterized via 16S rRNA sequencing. Dimensionality reduction strategies, including theory-driven diet scores and data-driven machine learning (Random Forest, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO)), were used. Statistical analyses included beta regression for alpha diversity, Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) for beta diversity (both Bray–Curtis and Sørensen metrics), and Microbiome Multivariable Associations with Linear Models (MaAsLin2) with negative binomial regression for taxa-level associations. All models tested interactions with exercise intervention, APOLIPOPROTEIN E (APOE) genotype, and testosterone levels. There was an interaction between MEDAS and exercise type on gut alpha diversity (Shannon: p = 0.0022), with stronger diet–diversity associations in strength training and Tai Chi groups than flexibility controls. All three diet-quality scores predicted beta diversity (HEI p = 0.002; MIND p = 0.025; MEDAS p = 0.034) but not Bray–Curtis (abundance-weighted) distance, suggesting diet shapes community membership rather than relative abundances. Taxa-level analysis revealed 129 genera with diet associations or diet × host factor interactions. Among 297 dietary variables tested for cognitive outcomes, only caffeine significantly predicted Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores after False Discovery Rate (FDR) correction (p = 0.0009, q = 0.014) through direct pathways beneficial to cognitive performance without notable gut microbiome modulation. In cancer survivors, dietary recommendations should be tailored to exercise habits, genetic background, and hormonal status. Full article

Engineering programmes have been giving more weight to experiential learning, largely because many students still find it difficult to see how classroom theory connects to the work that engineers handle on the ground. With this in mind, a robotics-centred Project-based Learning (PBL) module was introduced to first-year general engineering students as part of the faculty’s engineering spine. The module asks students to design, build, and program small autonomous robots capable of navigating and competing in a set arena. Even a simple task of this kind draws together multiple strands of engineering. Students shift between sketching mechanical layouts, wiring basic circuits, writing code, testing prototypes, and negotiating the usual challenges that arise when several people share responsibility for the same piece of hardware. To explore how students learned through the module, a mixed-methods evaluation was carried out using survey responses alongside reflective pieces written by the students themselves. Certain patterns appeared repeatedly. Many students felt that their technical skills had grown, particularly in breaking down a messy problem into smaller, more workable components. Teamwork also surfaced as a prominent theme. Groups often had to sort out issues such as a robot veering off course due to a misaligned sensor or a block of code producing unpredictable behaviour. These issues were undoubtedly challenging for the students, but they also had a certain pedagogical flavour, with many students describing them as a source of frustration as well as a learning opportunity. Later iterations of the module may benefit from more targeted support at key stages. Despite the many challenges, robotics has been shown to be an attractive way for students to step into engineering practice. The project helped them build technical capability, but it also encouraged habits that matter just as much in real work, such as planning, communicating clearly, and returning to a problem until it behaves as expected. Taken together, the experience offers useful guidance for curriculum designers seeking to create early learning environments that feel authentic and manageable and for motivating students who are just beginning their engineering journey. Background/Objectives: Eating mindfulness and healthy lifestyle behaviors play a key role in preventing unhealthy weight gain. Understanding how these behaviors differ according to exercise habits can guide interventions targeting women’s health. This study aimed to compare healthy lifestyle behaviors and eating mindfulness between women with and without regular exercise habits. Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical, and descriptive study was conducted with 156 women: a Regular Exercise Group (REG, n = 68) and a Non-Exercise Group (NEG, n = 88). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ-30) and the Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II (HLBS-II), along with dietary records and anthropometric measurements. Results: The REG scored significantly higher in eating discipline (p = 0.003) and in HLBS-II subscales of physical activity, nutrition, and stress management (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in total MEQ scores, BMI-related nutrient intake, or other HLBS-II dimensions (p > 0.05). BMI values and smoking rates were lower in the REG (p < 0.05). Univariate logistic regression showed that BMI, eating discipline, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and total HPLP-II scores were significantly associated with regular exercise (p < 0.05). In the multivariate model, BMI (OR = 1.114, 95% CI: 1.021–1.216) remained independently associated with regular exercise status. Conclusions: Although eating discipline was higher in the REG, overall mindful eating levels did not differ between groups. BMI were the strongest independent variables associated with regular exercise status, suggesting that while exercise supports positive lifestyle patterns, enhancing mindful eating may require additional targeted interventions. The growing interest in no- and low-alcohol (NoLo) wines reflects evolving consumer preferences toward moderation, health, and mindful drinking. This study investigates consumer perception and acceptance of NoLo wines within a traditional wine context (Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy), based on a survey of 344 people. Respondents were primarily between 18 and 34 years old. Descriptive results indicated low familiarity and purchase frequency but positive attitudes, especially among women and health-oriented consumers. Nonparametric tests revealed that gender significantly affected familiarity, social acceptance, and willingness to recommend NoLo wines, with women respondents showing higher engagement and acceptance. Age showed a weaker but still significant effect on familiarity, while consumers who regularly consumed NoLo beverages exhibited greater social acceptance and willingness to recommend. In addition, logit and probit models suggested that preference for mid-to-low alcohol levels and prior experience with alcohol-free drinks positively influenced purchase frequency. In contrast, traditional wine consumption habits and expenditure had no significant effects. These findings suggest that while NoLo wine adoption in a premium wine region such as Trentino-Alto Adige is in an emerging phase, it is underpinned by evolving young consumer motivations toward moderation, well-being, and social inclusivity, offering clear opportunities for targeted market development and product innovation. Grounded in Bandura’s social cognitive theory and Mezirow’s transformative learning theory, our study examines a co-curricular entrepreneurship pedagogy embedded within a National Science Foundation project. Using qualitative data from reflections, interviews, and observations, the study identifies stakeholder engagement, community-based design, and self-reflection as activities that support sustainable perspective shifts. The findings show that interdisciplinary, real-world challenges function as disorienting dilemmas that promote empathy and critical thinking. The study offers a replicable instructional model that integrates coursework, applied projects, practice-based engagement, and institutional support. This model demonstrates that entrepreneurship education can be designed to support both “can do” and “will become” student habits of the mind. Full article

Background/Objectives: The so-called ‘Western diet’ characterised by the frequent consumption of high energy-dense (HED) food is linked with overeating, obesity, and an array of physiological and weight-related health complications. Attentional biases to HED food, which have been identified as a key mechanism promoting overeating, arise when reward-driven automatic processes impair the internal states responsible for regulating hunger and satiety. Emerging mindfulness-based interventions show promise in attenuating attentional biases by training controlled processes and enhancing the self-regulatory mechanisms required to override reward-driven automatic processing. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and PICOS strategy, this systematic review collates and synthesises current research on the impact of mindfulness interventions on visual attention and attentional bias to food cues in adults. Searches were conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Springer Nature, MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL in September 2025. Results: Findings obtained from six eligible studies were mixed indicating that mindfulness interventions significantly reduced attentional bias to HED, whereas other interventions indirectly enhanced self-regulatory systems such as hedonic hunger and craving without directly modifying attention. Additional findings highlight reductions in physiological reactivity, increased interoceptive awareness, and savouring. Conclusions: Overall findings suggest that mindfulness-based practices hold preliminary but promising potential to subdue attentional biases to HED food and disrupt unhealthy eating habits influenced by the Western diet. However, the limited number of studies, small sample sizes, methodological heterogeneity, and lack of mechanistic clarity indicate that such conclusions should be interpreted with caution. More robust and standardised research is warranted to determine whether mindfulness can produce durable, real-world behavioural change. Full article

Background: Picky eating behaviors among children challenge nutritional intake and healthy development and place considerable stress on parents. Parenting approaches play a critical role in shaping young children’s dietary behaviors. Mindful parenting, which refers to parents responding to their child’s needs with awareness, acceptance, attention, and mindful discipline, has gained increasing attention. Parental dietary competence may determine whether mindful parenting effectively discourages picky eating behavior in children. Objectives: This study explored whether mindful parenting and parental dietary competence are associated with picky eating behaviors in young children. The mediating role of parental dietary competence in this association was also investigated. Methods: A total of 412 parents of children enrolled in six preschools across six administrative districts in New Taipei City, Taipei City, and Taoyuan City, Taiwan, were invited and recruited. Data were collected using three validated parent-reported instruments, including a mindful parenting scale, parental dietary competence scale, and children’s picky eating behaviors scale. Results: Mindful parenting influenced children’s picky eating behaviors through the full mediation of parental dietary competence. The identification of parental dietary competence as a mediator underscores the need for early preventive interventions and parenting education that integrate parental mindfulness and dietary competence to foster healthy eating habits from the outset of early childhood. Conclusions: Practical recommendations and future research directions are provided regarding mindful parenting, parental dietary competence, and picky eating behaviors in young children. Full article

Background: Adolescent depression is a growing public health concern. Health promotion for this group requires an understanding of what health means in the context of depression. Given that parents play a central role in adolescents’ everyday lives, their perspectives on health for adolescents are important. The aim of this study was to describe parents’ perceptions of what health means for adolescents with depression. Methods: This qualitative study employed a phenomenographic approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 parents of adolescents with depression. The analysis resulted in four categories, each comprising two sub-categories, reflecting variations in how health was perceived. Results: Parents described health for adolescents with depression in terms of taking initiative in everyday life and creating a daily structure through routines (navigating daily life with depression); experiencing belonging in supportive relationships and understanding one’s own value (building trust in self and others); having a positive outlook while facing struggles and finding pleasure in daily activities (experiencing joy despite depression); and balancing body and mind and maintaining healthy habits (supporting well-being despite depression). Conclusions: The findings provide new insights into how parents understand health for adolescents with depression. These perceptions may inform the development of supportive and health-promoting strategies tailored to adolescents’ and their families’ everyday challenges. Full article

The purpose of the present research is to analyse the negative outcomes associated with the excessive Instagram dependency of those users that access the application through their smartphones. An empirical study was conducted through online interviews using structured questionnaires, resulting in 342 valid responses, with the target population being young users over 18 years old who access Instagram daily. Research shows that dependency on Instagram is primarily driven by individuals’ need for orientation and understanding, with entertainment being a secondary motivation. The results indicate that dependency on the social network is positively associated with excessive use, addiction, and Instastress. Furthermore, excessive use contributes to personal and social problems and increases both stress levels and mindfulness related to the platform. In turn, this excessive use intensifies addiction, which functions as a mediating variable between overuse and Instastress, mindfulness, and emotional exhaustion. This study offers valuable insights for academics, mental health professionals, and marketers by emphasizing the importance of fostering healthier digital habits and developing targeted interventions. This quantitative study investigates the effects of virtual reality immersion on enhancing scientific habits of mind (critical and creative thinking) through the mediation of flow experience, motivation, and self-regulation in high school biology classes in East Jerusalem. The random multi-stage cluster sample consisted of 347 high school students from three schools who learned biology concepts constructively during the first semester using VR-based instruction, complying with the principles of the Cognitive Affective Model of Immersive Learning (CAMIL). The results of PLS-SEM revealed that VRI significantly affected critical and creative thinking directly and indirectly. Cases of partial and complete mediation intervened, showing the effects of mediators on enhancing habits of mind through a sequence of mediation flowing from flow experience through motivation to self-regulation, which functioned as a key intermediary factor in the relationship between virtual reality immersion and habits of mind. Based on the results of the study, the complex structure warrants further investigation. The results of the study suggest that VRI’s impact on critical and creative thinking was intensified through mediation effects. In addition, the findings confirm that flow experience and motivation played essential roles in fostering a conducive learning environment that supports cognitive skill development. The results highlight that the enhancement of self-regulation was a necessary step for the enhancement of critical and creative thinking. The study recommends integrating VRI into teaching biology to enhance students’ higher-order thinking skills. Further studies on self-regulation should explore adaptive interventions that strengthen self-regulatory strategies to maximize the cognitive benefits of virtual reality immersion. Full article

This paper explores the role of forgetting in the thought of the Korean Sŏn (Chan in Chin.; Zen in Jpn. 禪) master Chinul (知訥, 1158–1210), situating it within broader East Asian philosophical and Buddhist discourses. While the concept of forgetting has often been treated negatively in Western philosophy—as a cognitive failure or loss—this study draws on recent comparative scholarship, including Youru Wang’s reading of Zhuangzi, to show how forgetting can be reframed as a conscious spiritual and philosophical practice. In particular, this paper examines how Chinul integrates the practice of forgetting into a systematic Buddhist framework grounded in no-self (anātman), emptiness (śūnyatā), and the unity of samādhi and prajñā. In Straight Talk on the True Mind (Chinsim chiksŏl 眞心直說), Chinul outlines ten distinct methods for cultivating no-mind by offering interpretations of teachings from various East Asian Chan masters. Through a detailed analysis of Chinul’s Chinsim chiksŏl, this paper argues that forgetting—when understood as the deliberate letting go of discursive thought, deluded conceptualizations, and habitual dualisms—becomes a powerful method for revealing the true mind. Ultimately, Chinul’s philosophy of forgetting offers a unique account of cognitive transformation—one that challenges conventional epistemologies and calls for a reorientation of perception itself. Therefore, Chinul’s teachings on no-mind and forgetting offer a profound understanding of how deconstructing ingrained cognitive habits can lead to the emergence of enlightened awareness, providing valuable insights into the transformative processes at the heart of East Asian Sŏn Buddhist practice. The present research aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire examining French-speaking Québec adults’ perceptions of how the various dimensions of eating pleasure influence healthy eating habits. Items were developed based on dimensions of eating pleasure, identified through a literature review. Content validity was evaluated by an expert committee, followed by a pre-test among 30 participants to assess face validity. The questionnaire was then administered twice (2–4 weeks apart) to 298 participants. Exploratory factor analysis identified a six-factor structure reflecting the multidimensional nature of eating pleasure in relation to healthy eating: (1) emotional/situational eating and reward (eight items), (2) sensory experiences (six items), (3) ideologies/interest in food (eight items), (4) autonomy, freedom, and individual preferences (seven items), (5) social experiences (five items), and (6) mindful eating (three items). The results showed an adequate internal consistency, a good test–retest reliability, and a good construct validity. Participants perceived all factors except Factor 1, “emotional/situational eating and reward”, as supporting healthy eating. Overall, these findings indicate that the questionnaire assessing the perceived impact of eating pleasure on healthy eating is a suitable instrument for use among French-speaking adults of the province of Québec, in Canada. Background: This study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a teaching kitchen intervention that synergistically provided nutrition education, culinary skills/techniques, mindfulness, physical activity, and behavior change strategies. Methods: Non-randomized pilot study of 16 weekly 2 h hands-on virtual culinary sessions. Curbside grocery pickup assured food access/consistency. Qualitative interviews and pre/post-anthropometrics (BMI, waist circumference), labs (fasting glucose, insulin, lipids, HbA1c, ALT), and health habits surveys assessed program impact. Results: The program was successfully implemented from January to May of 2022. Of 56 participants screened, 13 (23%) enrolled, and 12 (92%) completed the program (mean age 51 years; 92% female; 92% white) with an average of 15.4 of 16 (96%) sessions attended and 100% completing assessments. Satisfaction with the program and with virtual cooking was high (100% and 92% satisfied-very satisfied). Days/week main meal was prepared from scratch increased from 3.8 to 5.9 (p < 0.05). Sense of well-being and three core mindfulness items (satiety, snacking, and food appreciation) improved (p ≤ 0.05). Confidence in 13 culinary skills/techniques improved (p < 0.05), as did diet recall and daily exercise, with variable significance. Labs improved LDL significantly (p < 0.05); anthropometrics did not. Conclusions: This teaching kitchen program was feasible, very well accepted, and suggested potential efficacy in improving health habits and metrics. Larger studies with randomization are needed. Background: This project focuses on the relevance of using a health literacy approach to educating children about obesity prevention. The Habits of Health and Habits of Mind© model was used to write Electronic Texts for Health Literacy© to encourage actions that support obesity prevention. Guided by the Integrative Theory of Behavioral Prediction, the design template for a new genre of digital texts called Electronic Texts for Health Literacy© emerges for exploring children’s frame of mind, health literacy skills, and behavioral intentions toward obesity prevention. Methods: Online materials from selected websites were strategically reviewed for improving obesity prevention and child health literacy. The digital resources were juxtaposed with the Electronic Texts for Health Literacy©, with the latter written by and for children. Discussion: Health educators who use a constructivist pedagogy can help students to write health literacy narratives about obesity prevention, then read and talk about their multimodal compositions to further the practice and development of their health literacy skills. Children with obesogenic body frames can also gain from cowriting visual–textual–gestural health narratives with their peers or health professionals. Co-constructed narratives can help children make deeper connections about their identity, frame of mind, and social agency. Summary: Although this untested resource is available as a new genre of digital text, health educators could nudge children toward developing a stronger frame of mind and behavioral intentions toward obesity prevention when they write health literacy narratives that focus on decision making, goal setting, and communication in the context of eating nutritious foods and participating in physical activities. Mindful eating (ME) has gained recognition in multidisciplinary weight management intervention and prevention programs for dysfunctional eating behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of mindful eating with body mass index, fat percentage, unhealthy food consumption, and emotional distress in Mexican college students. A cross-sectional study was performed. Anthropometry and body composition were evaluated. A self-reported Mindful Eating Questionnaire developed for the Mexican population, Food Frequency Questionnaire (frequency and serving size), and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) were applied. Two separate analyses were conducted: the first used the whole Mexican Mindful Eating Questionnaire with 11 questions (ME-11), and the second excluded the emotional eating items (ME-8). A total of 224 students were included in the analysis. Lower levels of mindful eating were associated with higher body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), waist circumference (p < 0.001), and body fat percentage (p < 0.001), using ME-11 or ME-8. Significant associations were identified between lower levels of mindful eating (ME-11) and consumption of fried foods (p = 0.005), sweets and desserts (p = 0.003), and fast food (p = 0.003). Similar associations were observed using the ME-8 score. In both versions of the questionnaire, depression, anxiety, and stress scores were significantly associated with lower levels of mindful eating. Mindful eating was associated with BMI, body fat, eating habits, and emotional distress. Mindful eating could be used in multidisciplinary educational and intervention programs to promote a healthy lifestyle. Full article
