Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most frequently diagnosed malignancy in men worldwide. Although traditionally considered a disease of older men, the incidence of early-onset PCa (diagnosis < 55 years) is steadily rising. Advances in screening and therapy have significantly improved survival, creating a growing cohort of younger survivors for whom post-treatment quality of life—notably reproductive function—is paramount. Curative treatments such as radical prostatectomy, pelvic radiotherapy, androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), and chemotherapy often cause irreversible infertility via multiple mechanisms, including surgical disruption of the ejaculatory tract, endocrine suppression of spermatogenesis, direct gonadotoxic injury to the testes, and oxidative sperm DNA damage. Despite these risks, fertility preservation is frequently overlooked in pre-treatment counseling, leaving many patients unaware of their options. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on how PCa therapies impact male fertility, elucidates the molecular and physiological mechanisms of iatrogenic infertility, and evaluates both established and emerging strategies for fertility preservation and restoration. Key interventions covered include sperm cryopreservation, microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (TESE), and assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Psychosocial factors influencing decision-making, novel biomarkers predictive of post-treatment spermatogenic recovery, and long-term offspring outcomes are also examined. The review underscores the urgent need for timely, multidisciplinary fertility consultation as a routine component of PCa care. As PCa increasingly affects men in their reproductive years, proactively integrating preservation into standard oncologic practice should become a standard survivorship priority. Full article

Combining Topical Oxygen and Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy: New Insights from a Pilot Study on Chronic Wound Treatment

Background: Chronic wounds are a growing clinical challenge due to their prolonged healing time and associated healthcare burden. Combined therapeutic approaches, including topical oxygen therapy (TOT) and negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT), have shown promise in enhancing wound healing. This pilot exploratory study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of combined TOT and NPWT in chronic wound treatment and to explore the prognostic value of selected laboratory and thermographic markers. Methods: Eighteen patients with chronic wounds due to type 2 diabetes mellitus or chronic venous insufficiency were treated with either TOT alone (control group) or TOT combined with NPWT (intervention group). Wound characteristics, thermographic data, and laboratory parameters (NLR, MLR, PLR, CRP, and total protein) were collected at baseline and during therapy. The primary endpoints were the total treatment duration and complete wound closure. Statistical analyses were exploratory and used non-parametric tests, correlation analyses, and simple linear regression. Results: Ulcer duration was significantly associated with the wound surface area. Lower serum total protein levels correlated negatively with ulcer duration, wound size, and granulation tissue area. A significant reduction in treatment duration was observed in the intervention group compared to the controls. One strong correlation was found between MLR and peripheral wound temperature on day 7 in the control group. No significant group differences were observed in wound size or thermographic measures after one week of treatment. Conclusions: Combining TOT and NPWT may reduce treatment duration in chronic wound management. Selected laboratory and thermographic markers show promise as prognostic tools. These exploratory findings require confirmation in larger, randomized trials. Full article

Black soldier fly frass (BSFF) is a nutrient-rich organic byproduct with growing potential as a sustainable fertilizer. While its effects on crops have been studied, its impact on tree seedling development for reforestation remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the effect of BSFF on the growth and survival of two native Malagasy tree species: the fast-growing Dodonaea madagascariensis and the slow-growing Verpis macrophylla. A six-month nursery experiment tested three BSFF application rates (half-, one-, and two-fold nitrogen equivalence), along with cattle manure, synthetic NPK, and a no-fertilizer control. The survival was highest in the half-fold BSFF (95% for D. madagascariensis, 87.5% for V. macrophylla) and lowest in BSFF two-fold (0% and 22.5%, respectively) treatments. NPK also significantly reduced the survival (5% for D. madagascariensis, 17.5% for V. macrophylla). The growth responses were most pronounced in D. madagascariensis, where the BSFF half- and one-fold treatments led to height growth rates that were 2.0–2.7 times higher than that of the control, cattle manure, and NPK treatments, and diameter growth that was 1.8–2.3 times higher. The biomass accumulation was also significantly higher under the BSFF half- and one-fold treatments for D. madagascariensis. In contrast, V. macrophylla showed limited response to the treatments. These findings indicate that calibrated BSFF application can enhance seedling performance in reforestation efforts, particularly for fast-growing species. Notably, the growth rate of D. madagascariensis doubled (in terms of cm/month) under optimal BSFF treatment—a critical advantage, as time is a key constraint in reforestation and faster growth directly supports more efficient forest restoration. This highlights BSFF’s potential as a sustainable and locally available input for forest restoration in Madagascar. Full article

The growing use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies adds complexity and risk to the healthcare environment. This paper presents a multi-layered cybersecurity assessment of an in-house mHealth platform (PHGL-COVID), comprising a Docker-based server infrastructure, a Samsung Galaxy A55 smartphone, and a Galaxy Watch 7 wearable. The objective was to identify vulnerabilities across the server, mobile, and wearable components by emulating real-world attacks and conducting systematic penetration tests on each layer. Tools and methods specifically tailored to each technology were applied, revealing exploitable configurations, insecure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications, and exposure of Personal Health Records (PHRs). Key findings included incomplete container isolation, BLE metadata leakage, and persistent abuse of Android privacy permissions. This work delivers both a set of actionable recommendations for developers and system architects to strengthen the security of mHealth platforms, and a reproducible audit methodology that has been validated in a real-world deployment, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical threat models and practical cybersecurity practices in healthcare systems. Background and Objectives: With the widespread integration of digital media into daily life, social media addiction (SMA) has become a growing concern for university students’ mental health. Based on attachment theory, this study examined how attachment anxiety and avoidance influence SMA through fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and loneliness. Methods: A sample of 400 Chinese university students completed the 16-item short version of the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR), the 8-item Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE), the 6-item Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale–Short Form (RULS-6), and the 6-item Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). Using the PROCESS macro (Model 6), a chained mediation model was tested. Results: Attachment anxiety positively predicts SMA (β = 0.42); the chained mediation pathway through FNE and loneliness accounts for ab = 0.06 of this effect, alongside additional single-mediator paths. In contrast, attachment avoidance shows a weaker total effect (β = −0.08) and a small negative chained mediation effect (ab = −0.02), offset by opposing single-mediator paths via FNE (negative) and loneliness (positive), resulting in a nonsignificant total indirect effect. Discussion: These findings suggest that in the Chinese cultural context, where social evaluation and belonging are emphasized, insecure attachment may heighten emotional reliance on social media. This study elucidates the socio-emotional mechanisms underlying SMA and extends the application of attachment theory to the digital media environment. Full article

The growing disposal of used tyres and plastic waste in landfills poses a significant environmental challenge. This study investigates the potential of utilizing used tyre rubber and macro-synthetic fibres (MSFs) made from recycled plastics in fibre-reinforced rubberized concrete (RuFRC). Various percentages of tyre rubber shreds were used to replace coarse aggregates, calculated as 10%, 20%, and 30% of the volume of fine aggregates; fibre dosages (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% by volume) were incorporated into the mix, and a series of physical, mechanical, and durability properties were evaluated. The results show that, as the fibre and rubber content increased, the slump of RuFRC decreased, with the lowest value obtained for concrete with 1% fibre and 30% rubber. The density of RuFRC decreases as the rubber percentage increases due to air voids and increased porosity caused by the rubber. The strength properties of RuFRC were found to decline with the increase in the rubber content, with mixes containing 30% rubber exhibiting reductions of about 60% in compressive strength, 27% in tensile strength, and 13% in flexural strength compared to the control specimen. Durability testing revealed that an increased rubber content led to higher water absorption, water penetration, and chloride ion permeability, with 30% rubber showing the highest values. However, lower rubber content (10%) and higher fibre dosages improved the durability characteristics, with water absorption reduced by up to 5% and shrinkage strains lowered by about 7%, indicating better compaction and bonding. These results indicate that RuFRC with moderate rubber and higher fibre content offers a promising balance between sustainability and performance. Full article

This study explores whether sustainability achievements—proxied through ESG (environmental, social, and governance) reporting—are associated with superior financial performance in Latvia’s manufacturing sector, where ESG maturity remains low and institutional readiness is still emerging. Building on stakeholder, legitimacy, signal, slack resources, and agency theories, this study applies a mixed-method approach (that consists of two analytical stages) suited to the limited availability and reliability of ESG-related data in the Latvian manufacturing sector. Financial indicators from three large firms—AS MADARA COSMETICS, AS Latvijas Finieris, and AS Valmiera Glass Grupa—are compared with industry averages over the 2019–2023 period using independent sample T-tests. ESG integration is evaluated through a six-stage conceptual schema ranging from symbolic compliance to performance-driven sustainability. The results show that AS MADARA COSMETICS, which demonstrates advanced ESG integration aligned with international standards, significantly outperforms its industry in all profitability metrics. In contrast, the other two companies remain at earlier ESG maturity stages and show weaker financial performance, with sustainability disclosures limited to general statements and outdated indicators. These findings support the synergy hypothesis in contexts where sustainability is internalized and operationalized, while also highlighting structural constraints—such as resource scarcity and fragmented data—that may limit ESG-financial alignment in post-transition economies. This study offers practical guidance for firms seeking competitive advantage through strategic ESG integration and recommends policy actions to enhance ESG transparency and performance in Latvia, including performance-based reporting mandates, ESG data infrastructure, and regulatory alignment with EU directives. These insights contribute to the growing empirical literature on ESG effectiveness under constrained institutional and economic conditions. Full article

The growing demand for food and the environmental impact of conventional agriculture have prompted the search for sustainable alternatives. Phycocyanin (PC) and total phenolic compounds (TPC) extracted from Spirulina platensis have shown potential for the biological control of phytopathogens. The extraction method directly influences the yield and stability of these compounds. This study aimed to establish an efficient extraction protocol for PC and TPC and to evaluate their antimicrobial efficacy in vitro against Colletotrichum orchidearum, Fusarium nirenbergiae, and Alternaria sp. isolated from hydroponically grown lettuce. The phytopathogens were identified based on phylogenetic analyses using sequences from the ITS, EF1-α, GAPDH, and RPB2 gene regions. This is the first report of C. orchidearum in hydroponic lettuce culture in Brazil, expanding its known host range. Extracts were obtained using hydroalcoholic solvents and phosphate buffer (PB), combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction (bath and probe). The extracts were tested for in vitro antifungal activity. Data were analyzed by ANOVA (p < 0.05), followed by Tukey’s test. The combination of the PB and ultrasound probe resulted in the highest PC (95.6 mg·g−1 biomass) and TPC (21.9 mg GAE·g−1) yields, using 10% (w/v) biomass. After UV sterilization, the extract retained its PC and TPC content. The extract inhibited C. orchidearum by up to 53.52% after three days and F. nirenbergiae by 54.17% on the first day. However, it promoted the growth of Alternaria sp. These findings indicate that S. platensis extracts are a promising alternative for the biological control of C. orchidearum and F. nirenbergiae in hydroponic systems. Full article

In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), antiplatelet therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for secondary prevention. Although dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) consisting of aspirin and a P2Y12 inhibitor is the current standard of care, being, respectively, recommended for 6 and 12 months in patients with chronic and acute coronary syndrome without a need for oral anticoagulation, the continuous improvement in PCI technology and pharmacology have significantly reduced the need for long-term DAPT. Mounting evidence supports the administration of P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy, particularly ticagrelor, after a short period of DAPT following PCI as a strategy to reduce bleeding without a trade-off in ischemic events compared to standard DAPT. In addition, there is a growing literature supporting P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy also for long-term secondary prevention of ischemic events. However, the data to this extent are not as robust as compared to the first-year post-PCI period, with aspirin monotherapy still remaining the mainstay of treatment for most patients. This review aims to summarize the rationale for long-term antiplatelet therapy, the pharmacology of current antiplatelet drugs tested for long-term administration as monotherapy, and current evidence on the available comparisons between different long-term antiplatelet monotherapies in patients with CAD. The growing need to improve the management of end-of-life vehicle (ELV) waste and mitigate its environmental impact is a global concern. One promising approach to enhancing the recyclability of these vehicles is leveraging synergies between the automotive and construction industries as part of a circular economy strategy. In this context, ELV waste emerges as a valuable source of secondary raw materials, enabling the development of sustainable innovations that capitalize on its physical and mechanical properties. This paper aims to develop and evaluate construction industry composites incorporating waste from ELV carpets, with a focus on maintaining or enhancing performance compared to conventional materials. To achieve this, an experimental program was designed to assess cementitious composites, specifically subfloor mortars, incorporating automotive carpet waste (ACW). The results demonstrate that, beyond the physical and mechanical properties of the developed composites, the dynamic stiffness significantly improved across all tested waste incorporation levels. This finding highlights the potential of these composites as an alternative material for impact noise insulation in flooring systems. From an academic perspective, this research advances knowledge on the application of ACW in cement-based composites for construction. In terms of managerial contributions, two key market opportunities emerge: (1) the commercial exploitation of composites produced with ELV carpet waste and (2) the development of a network of environmental service providers to ensure a stable waste supply chain for innovative and sustainable products. Both strategies contribute to reducing landfill disposal and mitigating the environmental impact of ELV waste, reinforcing the principles of the circular economy. Full article

The increase in the number of wildfires in recent years in different parts of the world has caused growing concern among the population, since the consequences of these fires go beyond the destruction of the ecosystem. With the growing relevance of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, developing solutions for the early detection of fires is of critical importance. This paper proposes a low-cost network based on Long-Range (LoRa) technology to autonomously assess the level of fire risk and the presence of a fire in rural areas. The system consists of several LoRa nodes with sensors to measure environmental variables such as temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, air quality, and wind speed. The data collected is sent to a central gateway, where it is stored, processed, and later sent to a website for graphical visualization of the results. In this paper, a survey of the requirements of the devices and sensors that compose the system was made. After this survey, a market study of the available sensors was carried out, ending with a comparison between the sensors to determine which ones met the objectives. Using the chosen sensors, a study was made of possible power solutions for this prototype, considering the expected conditions of use. The system was tested in a real environment, and the results demonstrate that it is possible to cover a circular area with a radius of 2 km using a single gateway. Our system is prepared to trigger fire hazard alarms when, for example, the signals for relative humidity, ambient temperature, and wind speed are below or equal to 30%, above or equal to 30 °C, and above or equal to 30 m/s, respectively (commonly known as the 30-30-30 rule). Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat, with wild birds increasingly recognized as potential reservoirs of resistant pathogens and as sentinels of environmental AMR. This study investigated the occurrence and AMR profiles of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from wild birds that died at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Vanzago, Lombardy, in 2024. Cloacal swabs were collected from 112 birds representing various ecological categories. A total of 157 Gram-negative bacteria were isolated and identified, including clinically relevant genera and species, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed resistance to first-line and critically important antimicrobials, including those exclusively authorized for human use. Notably, a phenotype compatible with Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) production was detected in four out of ten (40%) K. pneumoniae isolates. In addition, 20 out of the 157 (12.7%) isolated bacteria phenotypically exhibited a resistance profile indicative of AmpC beta-lactamase (AmpC) production, including Enterobacter spp. and P. aeruginosa. Resistance patterns were particularly interesting in birds with carnivorous, scavenging, or migratory-associated behaviors. These findings highlight the role of wild birds in the ecology and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) and highlight the need for wildlife-based AMR monitoring programs as part of a One Health approach. A Semi-Automated, Hybrid GIS-AI Approach to Seabed Boulder Detection Using High Resolution Multibeam Echosounder

The detection of seabed boulders is a critical step in mitigating geological hazards during the planning and construction of offshore wind energy infrastructure, as well as in supporting benthic ecological and palaeoglaciological studies. Traditionally, side-scan sonar (SSS) has been favoured for such detection, but the growing availability of high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) data offers a cost-effective alternative. This study presents a semi-automated, hybrid GIS-AI approach that combines bathymetric position index filtering and a Random Forest classifier to detect boulders and delineate boulder fields from MBES data. The method was tested on a 0.24 km2 site in Long Island Sound using 0.5 m resolution data, achieving 83% recall, 73% precision, and an F1-score of 77—slightly outperforming the average of expert manual picks while offering a substantial improvement in time-efficiency. The workflow was validated against a consensus-based master dataset and applied across a 79 km2 study area, identifying over 75,000 contacts and delineating 89 contact clusters. The method enables objective, reproducible, and scalable boulder detection using only MBES data. Its ability to reduce reliance on SSS surveys while maintaining high accuracy and offering workflow customization makes it valuable for geohazard assessment, benthic habitat mapping, and offshore infrastructure planning. Rapid Soil Tests for Assessing Soil Health

Soil testing has long been used to optimize fertilization and crop production. More recently, soil health testing has emerged to reflect the growing interest in soil multifunctionality and ecosystem services. Soil health encompasses physical, chemical, and biological properties that support ecosystem functions and sustainable agriculture. Despite its relevance to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 13, and 15), comprehensive soil health testing is not widely practiced due to complexity and cost. The aim of the study presented here was to contribute to the further development, implementation, and testing of an integrated procedure for soil health assessment in practice. We developed and tested a rapid, standardized soil health assessment tool that combines near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and multi-nutrient 0.01 M CaCl2 extraction with Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy analysis. The tool evaluates a wide range of soil characteristics with high accuracy (R2 ≥ 0.88 for most parameters) and has been evaluated across more than 15 countries, including those in Europe, China, New Zealand, and Vietnam. The results are compiled into a soil health indicator report with tailored management advice and a five-level ABCDE score. In a Dutch test set, 6% of soils scored A (optimal), while 2% scored E (degraded). This scalable tool supports land users, agrifood industries, and policymakers in advancing sustainable soil management and evidence-based environmental policy. Full article

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is gaining recognition as a valuable diagnostic tool in various fields of medicine, including pediatrics. Its application at the point of care enables real-time clinical decision-making, which is particularly advantageous in pediatric settings. Although global interest in POCUS is growing, many European countries—including Poland—still lack formal training programs for POCUS at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Nevertheless, the number of pediatricians incorporating POCUS into their daily clinical practice in Poland is increasing. However, the extent of its use and perceived value among pediatricians remains largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the current level of POCUS utilization in pediatric care in Poland, focusing on pediatricians’ self-assessed competencies, perceptions of its clinical utility, and key barriers to its implementation in daily practice. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between July and August 2024 using an anonymous online survey distributed to pediatricians throughout Poland via national professional networks, with a response rate of 7.3%. Categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-square test of independence to assess the associations between key variables. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data from open-ended responses were subjected to a thematic analysis. Results: A total of 210 pediatricians responded. Among them, 149 (71%) reported access to ultrasound equipment at their workplace, and 89 (42.4%) reported having participated in some form of POCUS training. Only 46 respondents (21.9%) reported frequently using POCUS in their clinical routine. The self-assessed POCUS competence was rated as low or very low by 136 respondents (64.8%). While POCUS was generally perceived as a helpful tool in facilitating and accelerating clinical decisions, the main barriers to implementation were a lack of formal training and limited institutional support. Conclusions: Although POCUS is perceived as clinically valuable by the surveyed pediatricians in Poland, its routine use remains limited due to training and systemic barriers. Future efforts should prioritize the development of a validated, competency-based training framework and the implementation of a larger, representative national study to guide the structured integration of POCUS into pediatric care.
