Early crop yield prediction is a major challenge in precision agriculture, and efficient and rapid yield prediction is highly important for sustainable fruit production. The accurate detection of major fruit characteristics, including flowering, green fruiting, and ripening stages, is crucial for early yield estimation. Currently, most crop yield estimation studies based on the YOLO model are only conducted during a single stage of maturity. Combining multi-growth period data for crop analysis is of great significance for crop growth detection and early yield estimation. In this study, a new network model, YOLOv8-RL, was proposed using citrus multigrowth period characteristics as a data source. A citrus yield estimation model was constructed and validated by combining network identification counts with manual field counts. Compared with YOLOv8, the number of parameters of the improved network is reduced by 50.7%, the number of floating-point operations is decreased by 49.4%, and the size of the model is only 3.2 MB. In the test set, the average recognition rate of citrus flowers, green fruits, and orange fruits was 95.6%, the mAP@.5 was 94.6%, the FPS value was 123.1, and the inference time was only 2.3 milliseconds. This provides a reference for the design of lightweight networks and offers the possibility of deployment on embedded devices with limited computational resources. The two estimation models constructed on the basis of the new network had coefficients of determination R2 values of 0.91992 and 0.95639, respectively, with a prediction error rate of 6.96% for citrus green fruits and an average error rate of 3.71% for orange fruits. Compared with network counting, the yield estimation model had a low error rate and high accuracy, which provided a theoretical basis and technical support for the early prediction of fruit yield in complex environments. This research presents a novel, sustainable, and eco-friendly method for the rapid green synthesis of nanoparticles with antibacterial properties. This method employs steam distillation to extract reducing and stabilizing agents from orange peel waste, followed by ultrasound-assisted synthesis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported integration of these two techniques for nanoparticle production. The extracted materials were then subjected to rigorous characterization through a combination of analytical techniques, including FTIR, HPLC, and TEM. These analytical approaches enabled a comprehensive analysis of the synthesized NPs, revealing their size distribution within the range of 1.5 to 14 nm. Among the synthesized nanomaterials, AgNPs exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity, with statistically significant minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 16 ppm for E. coli ATCC and 32 ppm for resistant E. coli and E. faecalis strains. This study underscored the promise of valorizing citrus waste for nanomaterial synthesis and introduced a novel, scalable methodology for producing bioactive nanoparticles, promoting a more sustainable technology for this purpose. Notably, this research aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which promotes responsible consumption and production by transforming organic waste into high-value functional nanomaterials for biomedical and environmental applications. Apples (Malus domestica), one of Iran’s oldest cultivated fruit crops, hold considerable economic importance. In this study, 170 apple leaf samples representing various commercial cultivars were collected across the country. RT-PCR screening targeted five common apple-infecting viruses and two viroids: apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), apple green crinkle-associated virus (AGCaV), apple mosaic virus (ApMV), apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd), and hop stunt viroid (HSVd). To identify additional or novel agents, 40 RT-PCR-negative samples were pooled into two composite groups and analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS). NGS was also performed on individual samples with mixed infections to retrieve full genomes. RT-PCR confirmed the presence of ACLSV, ASPV, ASGV, AGCaV, ApMV, and HSVd. NGS further revealed three additional pathogens: citrus concave gum-associated virus (CCGaV), apple hammerhead viroid (AHVd), and apricot vein clearing-associated virus (AVCaV), which were subsequently detected across the collection by RT-PCR. AGCaV was most prevalent (47.6%), followed by ACLSV (45.8%), HSVd (27.6%), AVCaV (20.5%), ASGV (17%), AHVd (15.2%), ASPV (14.1%), CCGaV (4.7%), and ApMV (3.5%). Mixed infections occurred in 67% of samples. Phylogenetic analysis based on CP genes (ACLSV, ASGV, AGCaV) and full genomes (AVCaV, AHVd) clustered Iranian isolates together, suggesting a common origin. This is the first report in Iran of AGCaV, CCGaV, ApMV, and AVCaV in apple, and notably, the first global report of AVCaV in a non-Prunus host. Citrus diseases can lead to surface defects on citrus fruits, adversely affecting their quality. This study aims to accurately identify citrus defects against varying backgrounds by focusing on four types of diseases: citrus black spot, citrus canker, citrus greening, and citrus melanose. We propose an improved YOLOv10-based disease detection method that replaces the traditional convolutional layers in the Backbone network with LDConv to enhance feature extraction capabilities. Additionally, we introduce the GFPN module to strengthen multi-scale information interaction through cross-scale feature fusion, thereby improving detection accuracy for small-target diseases. The incorporation of the DAT mechanism is designed to achieve higher efficiency and accuracy in handling complex visual tasks. Furthermore, we integrate the AFPN module to enhance the model’s detection capability for targets of varying scales. Lastly, we employ the Slide Loss function to adaptively adjust sample weights, focusing on hard-to-detect samples such as blurred features and subtle lesions in citrus disease images, effectively alleviating issues related to sample imbalance. The experimental results indicate that the enhanced model YOLOv10-LGDA achieves impressive performance metrics in citrus disease detection, with accuracy, recall, mAP@50, and mAP@50:95 rates of 98.7%, 95.9%, 97.7%, and 94%, respectively. These results represent improvements of 4.2%, 3.8%, 4.5%, and 2.4% compared to the original YOLOv10 model. Furthermore, when compared to various other object detection algorithms, YOLOv10-LGDA demonstrates superior recognition accuracy, facilitating precise identification of citrus diseases. This advancement provides substantial technical support for enhancing the quality of citrus fruit and ensuring the sustainable development of the industry. Full article

This study investigated aroma changes in Hui Li red Sichuan pepper across five different harvesting times within their typical optimum period based on 24 traditional solar terms, employing sensory evaluation, electronic nose (E-nose), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) combined with relative odour activity value (ROAV) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Sensory analysis indicated that peppers were characterised by green, citrus, minty, sweet, woody, and peppery numbing aroma attributes. E-nose revealed the greatest aroma difference in peppers occurred between the early and late optimum harvest stages. GC-IMS identified 71 volatile compounds, with esters being the most abundant. Six key compounds identified were crucial for distinguishing peppers harvested at different times. Findings provided a valuable contribution to decide the optimal harvest window for Hui Li red Sichuan peppers, maximising their applications in the seasoning industry. Full article

Citrus peel, a significant by-product of fruit processing, represents a rich source of carotenoids with strong antioxidant and health-promoting properties. The present study evaluated two green extraction techniques, cloud point extraction (CPE) and supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS)-based extraction, for carotenoids recovered from citron, orange, and tangerine peels. Whereas SUPRAS methods rely on a supramolecular solvent made of water, ethanol, and octanoic acid, CPE methods use surfactants and water, and both show a high potential to extract lipophilic components. CPE demonstrated superior efficiency in extracting total carotenoids and enhancing antioxidant activity, with orange peel extracts showing the highest concentrations. CPE and SUPRAS extracts were subsequently encapsulated using freeze-drying with chickpea protein isolate, achieving high encapsulation efficiencies (82.40–88.97%). The use of encapsulation technology is an effective strategy to protect carotenoids from environmental stressors. Color, morphological, and FTIR analyses confirmed the successful encapsulation and retention of carotenoids. Environmental impact was assessed using the EcoScale tool, revealing excellent sustainability for CPE (92 points) and satisfactory performance for SUPRAS-based extraction (70 points). The use of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) solvents and plant-derived encapsulation materials makes this method highly suitable for clean-label product development across the food, cosmetic, and nutraceutical industries. In summary, the results point to a practical and sustainable approach to citrus waste valorization into valuable, health-promoting ingredients—supporting both circular economy goals and eco-friendly innovation. Domestic food waste and agro-industrial by-products (AIBPs) occurring throughout the food chain, including production, processing, and storage, have become a global sustainability concern. Interestingly, this waste and these by-products contain a significant amount of commercially vital bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and carotenoids. Remarkably, discarded by-products such as fruit and vegetable peels contain more bioactive compounds than edible pulp. Thus, valorizing this waste and these by-products for commercially vital bioactive products can solve their disposal problems and help alleviate climate change crises. Additionally, it can generate surplus revenue, significantly improving food production and processing economics. Interestingly, several bioactive extracts derived from citrus peel, carrot pomace, olive leaf, and grape seed are commercially available, highlighting the importance of agro-food waste and by-product valorization. Considering this background information, this review aims to provide holistic information on major AIBPs; recovery methods of bioactive compounds focusing on polyphenols, carotenoids, oligosaccharides, and pectin; microencapsulation of isolated bioactive for enhanced physical, chemical, and biological properties; and their commercial application. In addition, green extraction methods are discussed, which have several advantages over conventional extraction. The concept of the circular bio-economy approach, challenges in waste valorization, and future perspective are also discussed. Full article

In Gannan navel orange (Citrus sinensis) orchards—a typical sloped farmland ecosystem—selected native grasses outperform conventional green manure due to their stronger ecological adaptability and lower management requirements. However, few studies have investigated how native grasses enhance soil organic carbon and nitrogen contents at the soil aggregate level. A 5-year field study was carried out to analyze the impacts of the native grasses practice on the accumulation of soil organic carbon and nitrogen and the physicochemical properties and microbial communities of soil aggregates in navel orange orchards. Three treatments were tested: (i) clean tillage (CK); (ii) intercropping Centella asiatica (L.) Urban (CA); (iii) intercropping Stellaria media (L.) Cvr. (SM). Our work found that, compared to CK, the soil physical properties improved under the long-term management of native grasses, and the content of nutrients in the soil increased. The contents of SOC (+118.3–184.2%) and total nitrogen (TN) (+73.3–81.5%) changed significantly. The proportion of soil macro-aggregates and the stability of soil aggregates increased, and the contents of SOC and TN in the soil aggregates increased. In addition, under the long-term management of native grasses, the community diversity of beneficial microbes and the abundance of functional genes related to nitrogen cycling increased significantly in the soil aggregates. Native grasses increased the content of nutrients in the soil aggregates by increasing aggregate stability and the abundance of related microorganisms, altering the microbial community structure, and increasing the abundance of related genes for nutrient cycling, thereby enhancing the sequestration of SOC and TN in topsoil. Our results will provide a theoretical basis for the carbon enhancement and fertilization of native grasses as green manure in navel orange orchards and their popularization and application. With conventional fuels dwindling and emissions rising, there is a necessity to develop and assess innovative substitute fuel for compression ignition (CI) engines. This study investigates the potential of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles as a sustainable additive to enhance the performance and reduce emissions of used cooking oil (UCO) biodiesel–diesel blends in CI engines. MgO nanoparticles were biosynthesized using Citrus aurantium peel extract, offering an environmentally friendly production method. A single-cylinder CI engine was used to test the performance of diesel fuel (B0), a 20% biodiesel blend (B20), and B20 blends with 30 ppm (B20M30) and 60 ppm (B20M60) MgO nanoparticles. Engine performance parameters (brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC), and exhaust gas temperature (EGT)) and emission characteristics (CO, NOx, unburnt hydrocarbons (HCs), and smoke opacity) were measured. The B20M60 blend showed a 2.38% reduction in BSFC and a 3.38% increase in BTE compared to B20, with significant reductions in unburnt HC, CO, and smoke opacity. However, NOx emissions increased by 6.57%. The green synthesis method enhances sustainability, offering a promising pathway for cleaner and more efficient CI engine operation using UCO biodiesel, demonstrating the effectiveness of MgO nanoparticles. Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as citrus greening, is a devastating disease affecting the citrus industry worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the transcriptional responses of two Rutaceae species, Ponkan Mandarin (susceptible) and Punctate Wampee (resistant), to HLB infection. Comparative transcriptome analysis was conducted to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and pathways involved in defense mechanisms. The transcriptome data showed that in the susceptible Ponkan Mandarin, there were 1519 upregulated genes and 700 downregulated genes, while in the resistant Punctate Wampee variety, there were 1611 upregulated genes and 1727 downregulated genes. Upon infection, 297 genes were upregulated in both varieties, while 211 genes were downregulated in both. These genes included transcription factors from different families such as WRKY, ERF, and MYB. Ponkan Mandarin primarily relies on pathways like lignin synthesis and cell wall modification to defend against HLB, whereas Punctate Wampee mainly resists HLB by regulating cellular homeostasis and metabolism. Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) identified ten potential key resistance genes in the resistant Punctate Wampee variety, including genes involved in lignin biosynthesis and genes related to cellular signaling pathways. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the distinct defense mechanisms employed by citrus species against HLB infection but also offer novel perspectives for developing effective prevention and management strategies against this disease. We investigated the host status of harvest-ready green lemons, Citrus × limon (L.) Burm. F. cv. Lisbon (Rutaceae), to Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis), Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), and melon fly (Zeugodacus cucurbitae) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Hawaii using laboratory and field studies. In forced-infestation small-cage exposures (using 25 × 25 × 25 cm screened cages with 50 gravid females), punctured lemons were infested by Oriental fruit fly, Mediterranean fruit fly, and melon fly, whereas undamaged lemons were not infested. Field collection, packing, and incubation of approximately 58,420 mixed-grade fruit (commercial export quality and off grades) found no natural infestations and resulted in no fruit fly emergence. Field studies enclosing fruit on trees in sleeve cages that were stocked with 50 gravid females per cage resulted in no infestations. Commercial export-grade green Lisbon lemon fruit should, therefore, be considered a non-host for Oriental fruit fly, Mediterranean fruit fly, and melon fly. Full article

Synergistic Treatment with Ozone Water and Morpholine Fatty Acid Salts Improves Postharvest Quality in Mandarin Oranges

Citrus rot seriously reduces the quality of citrus, causes economic losses, and is an urgent problem for the citrus industry. Effective preservation and pretreatment methods have an important impact on the maintenance of mandarin orange quality. In this study, mandarin orange was pretreated through single and synergistic treatments with ozone water and morpholine fatty acid salts in order to assess their effects on the fruit’s physicochemical properties. First, the parameters of the ozone water treatment, including time and ozone water concentration, were optimized to determine the optimal pretreatment conditions for the subsequent mandarin orange preservation. Subsequently, the mandarin oranges subjected to different pretreatments (ozone water, morpholine fatty acid salts, ozone water + morpholine fatty acid salts, water, and blank control) were stored at 25 ± 2 °C and 75% relative humidity for 20 d to simulate retail conditions (shelf-life). Finally, the surface microbial content, firmness, weight loss, total soluble solids content, respiration rate, decay rate, and surface morphology of mandarin orange peel were assessed during the storage period. The results showed that the synergistic treatment with ozone water and morpholine fatty acid salts significantly reduced the surface microbial content (Lg CFU/g = 3.91), weight loss (2.79%), decay rate (2.5%), and firmness losses on day 20 compared to other single treatments (p < 0.05). Hence, synergistic treatment with ozone water and morpholine fatty acid salts is a new green mandarin orange preservation technology with promising applications in controlling postharvest diseases and extending the storage period. Maghemite nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully developed using phenolic-rich extracts (cyanidin) from Citrus reticulata peel residues. The 11 nm maghemite NPs, obtained at 3% w/v and at 353 K, presented the optimal synthesis conditions. To improve dye adsorption performance, the synergetic adsorption behavior between these 11 nm NPs and multiwall carbon nanotubes was demonstrated. Prior to the adsorption tests, the aging effect on NPs was carefully assessed using various analytical techniques, which clearly showed the magnetite–maghemite phase transition. However, this had no impact on the cyanidin coating or adsorption properties. A remarkable percentage removal of (93 ± 3)% for methylene blue and (84 ± 3)% for methylene green was achieved in short equilibrium times of 10 and 25 min, respectively, with an optimum pH value of 5.5. Reuse experiments revealed that 90% removal for both dyes was achieved between the second to seventh regeneration cycles. Organic loading during these cycles was effectively confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Dye adsorption involves a two-step mechanism: (i) electrostatic adsorption by the negative surface groups of the adsorbent (isoelectric point of 5.2) and the dye cationic groups and (ii) π–π stacking interactions between the aromatic benzene rings of the dyes, the hexagonal skeleton of the multiwall carbon nanotubes, and the phenolic ring groups of the biosynthesized sample. These results suggest that the low-cost modified phenolic adsorbent can be successfully applied to dye removal from water with promising recycling properties. Full article

The Effects of Flocculant Yeast or Spontaneous Fermentation Strategies Supplemented with an Organic Nitrogen-Rich Additive on the Volatilome and Organoleptic Profile of Wines from a Neutral Grape Variety

The effects of spontaneous fermentation and the inoculation of grape must with a flocculant yeast starter culture, together with the supplementation of must with a commercial organic nitrogen compound (ONC), were analyzed. The microbiome during fermentation was tracked, and volatile compounds in the resulting wines were identified and quantified using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Volatile compound concentrations were then subjected to statistical analysis. No significant differences in pH, titratable and volatile acidity, and ethanol and lactic acid were observed among the four wines analyzed. However, the musts supplemented with the ONC slightly increased the fermentation rate of the flocculant yeast, and, also, this additive reduced the volume of lees in the spontaneous fermentation and flocculant yeast by 1.2% and 0.6%, respectively. The concentrations of 11 major and 28 minor volatiles were significantly influenced (p-value ≤ 0.05) by the inoculation strategy, while 8 major and 28 minor volatiles were affected by ONC supplementation. This supplementation significantly decreased the Odor Activity Values and, consequently, the values of the odorant series established in wines from spontaneous fermentation. On the contrary, those from flocculant yeast showed a significant increase in all the odorant series except for the waxy series, leading to a more balanced aroma profile. Additionally, lower scores were recorded for the green, creamy, citrus, chemical, and honey series compared to wines from spontaneous fermentation. Overall, the commercial ONC extract contributed to a content increase in volatiles that provided desirable aromatic notes to the wines made with flocculant yeast, although the organoleptic evaluation showed no significant statistical differences in the attributes evaluated at the 95% confidence level. Microbiome studies aimed at combating the citrus greening devastation caused by Liberibacter asiaticus abound. However, the role of farming practices, such as the massive use of herbicides, pesticides, and inorganic fertilizers on specific taxa and plant population immunity remains an important inquiry. To test our hypothesis that agricultural practices in managed Citrus groves induce root microbiome dysbiosis, potentially rendering citrus readily susceptible to citrus greening disease (CGD), we compared the CGD and root microbiome status of citrus plants in a rare > 130-year-old grove (no anthropogenic influence) to those of managed Valencia groves (symptomatic and asymptomatic). Citrus greening disease was detected by qPCR using the HLBa/HLBs/HLBp primer/probe combination, while root microbiome community structure was determined using 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. The prevalence of CGD among citrus growing in the undisturbed, healthy soils was zero (Ct values > 36), while symptomatic and asymptomatic Valencia from managed groves was 100% positive (Ct < 34). Known beneficial plant symbionts (Actinomycetales, Bradyrhizobium, Verrucomicrobia, etc.) from Phylum Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were depleted in the rhizosphere of the managed sites. This dysbiotic shift was characterized by enrichment with Acidobacterium, Nitrospira, and Sphingomonas spp. In highly infected Valencia oranges, beneficial taxa of the Alphaproteobacteria declined significantly (from 20–25% to 10–15%), while Bacillus sp. (a Firmicutes) was enriched 13-fold. Simpson and Shannon diversity indices were similar for all plant microbiomes except the heavily infected Valencia, which exhibited low diversity (p < 0.05), indicating that diversity indices alone are not reliable measures of soil health or rhizobiome homeostasis. Large reservoirs of known and novel putative beneficial rhizosphere microbes in undisturbed sites supported zero CGD, despite proximity to the managed sites where diverse non-beneficial taxa coincided with high disease rates. Supplementing the use of agrochemicals with carefully designed microbial products for plant disease control and sustainable soil health deserves acute attention. Full article
