In response to the stress commonly experienced by young people in high-pressure daily environments, a music-based stress-relief interactive system was developed by integrating music-assisted care with emotion-sensing technology. The design principles of the system were established through a literature review on stress, music listening, emotion detection, and interactive devices. A prototype was created accordingly and refined through interviews with four experts and eleven users participating in a preliminary experiment. The system is grounded in a four-stage guided imagery and music framework, along with a static activity model focused on relaxation-based stress management. Emotion detection was achieved using a wearable EEG device (NeuroSky’s MindWave Mobile device) and a two-dimensional emotion model, and the emotional states were translated into visual representations using seasonal and weather metaphors. A formal experiment involving 52 users was conducted. The system was evaluated, and its effectiveness confirmed, through user interviews and questionnaire surveys, with statistical analysis conducted using SPSS 26 and AMOS 23. The findings reveal that: (1) integrating emotion sensing with music listening creates a novel and engaging interactive experience; (2) emotional states can be effectively visualized using nature-inspired metaphors, enhancing user immersion and understanding; and (3) the combination of music listening, guided imagery, and real-time emotional feedback successfully promotes emotional relaxation and increases self-awareness. Background/Objectives: Since breast cancer (BC) survival rates have increased to 91% at 5 years and 80% at 15 years postdiagnosis, there is a growing awareness of the importance of addressing the long-term well-being of patients. Consequently, integrative oncology, which combines standard therapies with complementary approaches (nutrition, mind–body practices, and lifestyle modifications), has emerged as a patient-centred model aimed at improving symptom management, treatment adherence, and overall quality of life (QoL). This study aims to demonstrate how integrative therapies can benefit body composition, phase angle, and fluid and electrolyte balance through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Methods: This study considers a patient who underwent BC surgery and was enrolled in the AMICO clinic for anamnesis, as well as their oncological pathology data, assessment of QoL, and BIA. The breast surgeon specialising in integrative oncology therapies prescribed the patient curcumin and polydatin, moderate physical activity, a balanced diet, and Qigong sessions. The patient underwent monitoring through haematochemical analysis, BIA, and a QoL questionnaire, with follow-up every four months. Results: Between 4 and 12 months, fat mass (FM) and body mass index (BMI) markedly decreased, whereas fat-free mass (FFM), total body water (TBW), and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) increased progressively. Moreover, the improvements in the Na/K ratio and phase angle (PhA) suggest a shift toward better electrolyte and fluid balance and enhanced cellular integrity and membrane function. Equally outstanding were her psychological benefits in terms of mood, sleep, anxiety, and melancholy. Conclusions: Patient progress in body composition, metabolic function, pain management, and psychological status measured during the 12-month follow-up demonstrates the potential benefits of an integrative approach to supportive cancer care. Background/Objectives: According to Embodied Cognition theories, motor skills in early childhood are closely interconnected with various cognitive abilities, including working memory, cognitive flexibility, and theory of mind. These processes are integral components of the multicomponent model of narrative comprehension, which posits that higher-order cognitive functions support the construction of coherent mental representations of narrative meaning. This study aimed to examine whether motor skills directly contribute to narrative comprehension in preschool children or whether this relationship is mediated by cognitive skills. Methods: Seventy-four typically developing children aged 3 to 6 years (47.2% female) participated in this study. Motor skills were assessed using standardized measures, and cognitive abilities were evaluated through tasks targeting working memory, cognitive flexibility, and theory of mind. Narrative comprehension was measured with age-appropriate tasks requiring the understanding and retelling of stories. A structural equation model (SEM) was conducted to test the direct and indirect effects of motor skills on narrative comprehension via cognitive skills. Results: The SEM results indicated a significant direct effect of motor skills on cognitive skills and an indirect effect on narrative comprehension mediated by cognitive abilities. No evidence was found for a direct pathway from motor skills to narrative comprehension independent of cognitive processes. Conclusions: These findings underscore the complex interplay between motor, cognitive, and language development in early childhood. The results suggest that motor skills contribute to narrative comprehension indirectly by enhancing core cognitive abilities, offering novel insights into the developmental mechanisms that support language acquisition and understanding. This paper presents an accurate analysis of the power losses of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor fed by a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. The main goal of this study is to investigate the impact of the cascaded h-bridge inverter, multicarrier PWM strategies, and inverter switching frequency on the synchronous motor power losses. With this aim in mind, a detailed frequency domain power analysis was carried out on motor power losses at different operating points in the frequency–torque plane. Motor power losses were further categorized into fundamental and harmonic power losses. This evaluation involved driving the power converter using six distinct multicarrier PWM strategies at four different switching frequencies. Additionally, a comparison was conducted with a conventional two-level PWM inverter to quantify the reduction in motor power losses. The experimental results show that the cascaded h-bridge inverter guarantees a notable increase in the motor efficiency, up to 7%, and losses in segregation at the fundamental frequency, if compared to the standard two-level PWM inverter, especially at low speed and with partial-load conditions. Such results mark out the cascaded H-bridge inverter as a valuable choice, also with regard to low-voltage drive applications. Full article

The exponential growth of video data across domains such as surveillance, transportation, and healthcare has raised critical challenges in scalability, real-time processing, and privacy preservation. While existing studies have addressed individual aspects of Video Big Data Analytics (VBDA), an integrated, up-to-date perspective remains limited. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of system architectures and enabling technologies in VBDA. It categorizes system architectures into four primary types as follows: centralized, cloud-based infrastructures, edge computing, and hybrid cloud–edge. It also analyzes key enabling technologies, including real-time streaming, scalable distributed processing, intelligent AI models, and advanced storage for managing large-scale multimodal video data. In addition, the study provides a functional taxonomy of core video processing tasks, including object detection, anomaly recognition, and semantic retrieval, and maps these tasks to real-world applications. Based on the survey findings, the paper proposes ViMindXAI, a hybrid AI-driven platform that combines edge and cloud orchestration, adaptive storage, and privacy-aware learning to support scalable and trustworthy video analytics. Our analysis in this survey highlights emerging trends such as the shift toward hybrid cloud–edge architectures, the growing importance of explainable AI and federated learning, and the urgent need for secure and efficient video data management. These findings highlight key directions for designing next-generation VBDA platforms that enhance real-time, data-driven decision-making in domains such as public safety, transportation, and healthcare. These platforms facilitate timely insights, rapid response, and regulatory alignment through scalable and explainable analytics. This work provides a robust conceptual foundation for future research on adaptive and efficient decision-support systems in video-intensive environments. Full article

As mental health disorders in the U.S. increase at an alarming rate, schools are looking for prevention and mitigation interventions for their students. This study reports teachers’ perspectives on the effectiveness of a school program situated at the intersection of self-care and nature-based interventions at a vocational technical high school. Eight classes received between one and four “Intro to Well-Being” sessions, designed to take students outside and develop self-awareness, sense of connection, and reduce stress. Upon the conclusion of the program, classroom teachers were interviewed to identify the perceptions of the sessions and their impact on student and classroom outcomes. Teachers described the sessions as beneficial to students’ expression of emotions, mindfulness skills, personal/social connections, and classroom atmosphere. Teachers also reflected on challenges and provided recommendations for future implementation. Outdoor-based self-care programs, administered at schools, may be a promising program model to support the social and emotional health of students. Full article

The backbone of maritime transportation has always been the successful execution of ship operations. However, the human factor has proven to be a weak point in the system. To reduce and mitigate it, a regulatory framework and consequently a safety system for ship barriers were created and implemented with this goal in mind. The expected result of these measures was the creation of a resilient maritime transport system. Nevertheless, the available statistics show that most of the reported accidents and incidents occurred during ship operation, with the human factor as the main cause. Therefore, it is useful to investigate whether the regulatory framework can influence the safety system of ship barriers. Therefore, the objectives of the study are as follows: (a) to investigate and determine the regulatory safety requirements and the elements related to the ship barrier system, and (b) to investigate the influence of the regulatory safety requirements on the elements related to the ship barrier system. From the data obtained and the analyses performed, seven factors emerged. Four of them were related to the regulatory requirements and three to the shipboard barrier system, a basis for the presented models. Several important findings were obtained that have theoretical and practical implications and further highlight the importance and potential undesirable side effects of the provisions of the current regulatory framework. Templestay programs in South Korea represent a unique convergence of Buddhist ritual, cultural immersion, and wellness tourism. While often treated as niche cultural experiences, their broader significance within sustainable wellness tourism remains underexplored. This study examines participant reflections from the Beomeosa Templestay program through thematic analysis of over 600 reviews sourced from TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, and handwritten guestbooks. Using a triangulated framework combining Grounded Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, and the Wellness Tourism Model, the research identifies four recurring experiential themes: spiritual development, emotional healing, cultural immersion, and conscious consumption. Findings reveal cross-cultural variations: non-Korean participants emphasized spiritual exploration and cultural learning, while Korean participants prioritized emotional renewal and reconnection with heritage. Yet, across all groups, participants reported transformative outcomes, including heightened clarity, inner calm, and enhanced self-awareness. These results suggest that Templestays serve as accessible, culturally grounded wellness retreats that align with rising global demand for intentional, mindful travel. This study contributes to sustainable tourism scholarship by framing Templestays as low-impact, spiritually resonant alternatives to commercialized wellness retreats. Practical recommendations are offered to expand participation while maintaining program authenticity and safeguarding the spiritual and cultural integrity of monastic hosts in an increasingly globalized wellness landscape. This systematic review examines state-of-the-art artificial intelligence applications in energy systems, assessing their performance, real-world deployments and transformative potential. Guided by PRISMA 2020, we searched Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar for English-language studies published between January 2015 and January 2025 that reported novel AI uses in energy, empirical results, or significant theoretical advances and passed peer review. After title–abstract screening and full-text assessment, it was determined that 129 of 3000 records met the inclusion criteria. The methodological quality, reproducibility and real-world validation were appraised, and the findings were synthesised narratively around four critical themes: reinforcement learning (35 studies), multi-agent systems (28), planning under uncertainty (25), and AI for resilience (22), with a further 19 studies covering other areas. Notable outcomes include DeepMind-based reinforcement learning cutting data centre cooling energy by 40%, multi-agent control boosting virtual power plant revenue by 28%, AI-enhanced planning slashing the computation time by 87% without sacrificing solution quality, battery management AI raising efficiency by 30%, and machine learning accelerating hydrogen catalyst discovery 200,000-fold. Across domains, AI consistently outperformed traditional techniques. The review is limited by its English-only scope, potential under-representation of proprietary industrial work, and the inevitable lag between rapid AI advances and peer-reviewed publication. Overall, the evidence positions AI as a pivotal enabler of cleaner, more reliable, and efficient energy systems, though progress will depend on data quality, computational resources, legacy system integration, equity considerations, and interdisciplinary collaboration. No formal review protocol was registered because this study is a comprehensive state-of-the-art assessment rather than a clinical intervention analysis. Full article

Morningness-eveningness is usually assessed as either a trait or a state using either a morning–evening preference scale or sleep timing reported for free days, respectively. These assessments were implemented in numerous studies exploring the associations between morningness-eveningness and health, mood, and sleep problems. Evening types almost always had more problems than morning types. We examined these associations in university students with conflicting results of trait and state assessments of morningness-eveningness and tried to confirm their chronotype using a multidimensional chronotyping approach that recognizes four types other than morning and evening (lethargic, vigilant, napping, and afternoon). The conflicting trait and state assessments of morningness-eveningness were found in 141 of 1582 students. Multidimensional chronotyping supported morningness of morning types with late weekend sleep timing, and the associations with health, mood, and sleep problems resembled the associations of other morning types (i.e., these associations persisted despite late sleep timing). In contrast, evening types with early weekend sleep timing were more likely classified as lethargic or napping types rather than evening types. They did not resemble evening types in their associations with health, mood, and sleep problems (i.e., early sleep timing did not change these associations). Model-based simulations of the sleep–wake cycles of students with conflicting trait and state assessments suggested that their bedtimes cannot be solely determined by their biological clocks. On weekdays or weekends, mind-bedtime procrastination can lead to missing the bedtime signal from their biological clocks (i.e., self-deprivation of sleep or, in other words, voluntary prolongation of the wake phase of the sleep–wake cycle). Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most well-known neurodegenerative diseases. Axial symptoms of PD include tremors in the arms and legs, stiffness of the muscles in the limbs and trunk, slow movement, impaired coordination, and balance disorders. Progressive disability increases the risk of falls and leads to immobilization of the patient. Comprehensive rehabilitation plays a very important role in the treatment process and serves mainly to improve motor functions and balance. In recent years, traditional methods of rehabilitation have been enriched by sometimes unconventional modern methods, which are attractive to patients. Unfortunately, current scientific evidence for the effectiveness of these methods is insufficient. Unconventional methods being used increasingly often in the rehabilitation of patients with PD include mind–body interventions. One of these interventions is Pilates exercise, which works on a physical and mental level. In this narrative review, we present the state of the art on the effects of Pilates exercise on balance and motor functions in PD. Previous studies, the results of which are available in scientific reports, have not provided convincing evidence for the effectiveness of these methods. Between 2019 and 2024, four systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the use of Pilates in the rehabilitation of patients with PD were published. Most of the reports show many shortcomings: too small groups of patients; frequent methodological errors, such as a lack of randomization and insufficient inclusion and exclusion criteria; imprecise descriptions of the interventions; different intensities and frequencies of exercises; too different outcome measures; and poorly chosen methods of statistical evaluation. Therefore, many authors emphasize the need for further, better-planned research. Full article

Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSDs) carry a debilitating burden of disease which, even after pharmacological and psychological treatment are optimized, remains difficult to fully target. New online-delivered and user-led interventions may provide an appropriate, cost-effective answer to this problem. This study aims to retrieve the currently gathered findings on the efficacy of these interventions across several outcomes, such as symptom severity, social cognition, functioning and others. Methods: A systematic review of the current available literature was conducted. Of 29 potentially relevant articles, 26 were included and assigned at least one of four intervention types: Web-Based Therapy (WBT), Web-Based Psycho-Education (WBP), Online Peer Support (OPS) and Prompt-Based Intervention (PBI). Results: The findings were grouped based on outcome. Of 24 studies evaluating the effects of symptom severity, 14 have achieved statistically significant results, and 10 have not. WBT (such as online-delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, social cognition training and Mindfulness Training) seemed to be the most effective at targeting symptoms. Of 14 studies evaluating functioning, seven achieved significant results, four involving a form of social or neurocognitive training, suggesting a potential pathway towards functional improvements through interventions targeting cognition and motivation. Regarding social cognition, all seven studies measuring the effects of an intervention on this outcome produced significant results, indicating that this outcome lends itself well to remote, online administration. This may be linked with the nature of social cognition exercises, as they are commonly administered through a digital medium (such as pictures, videos and auditory exercises), a delivery method that suits the online-user led model very well. Conclusions: Online user-led interventions show promise as a new way to tackle functional deficits in SSD patients and achieve these improvements through targeting social cognition, a hard-to-reach component of the burden of SSDs which seems to be successfully targetable in a remote, user-led fashion. Symptomatic improvements can also be achievable, through the combination of these interventions with treatment as usual. Full article

As artificial intelligence (AI) undergoes rapid evolutionary advancements, two enduring queries in the philosophy of language and linguistics persist: the problem of other minds and coherence. This can be further explored by the following question: is there a fundamental difference between human-AI interactions and human–human interactions? More precisely, does an AI partner’s ability to understand discursive coherence sufficiently approximate that of the human mind? This study frames the problem of other minds as a problem in discourse analysis, positing that linguistic exchange inherently constitutes interactions between minds, where the act of decoding discursive coherence serves as a proxy for apprehending other minds. Guided by this perspective, this study uses four criteria of discursive coherence to examine how AI partners (with a focus on ChatGPT) achieve discursive coherence, thus reflecting whether an AI partner’s ability to understand discursive coherence suffices to simulate the human mind. Through a comparison between human–human interactions and human-AI interactions, the results indicate that while ChatGPT demonstrates proficiency in constructing discursive coherence along dictional, intentional, emotional, and rational coherence lines, the structural complexity and generative creativity of its coherence lines remain significantly below the threshold observed in human–human interactions. Moreover, ChatGPT’s emotional expressiveness pales in comparison to the rich, nuanced affect inherent in human–human interactions. Full article

Background: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex conditions with significant psychological, physical, and economic impacts, prompting national calls to prioritize ED prevention. Despite numerous prevention programs being implemented in Australian schools, no review to date has systematically mapped their scope, design, and outcomes. Aims: This scoping review aimed to map the current landscape of school-based ED prevention programs conducted in Australia. The review focused on their methodological features, participant and school characteristics, data collected, and key findings. Method: Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and Scopus) were searched for relevant papers published from 2010 to February 2025. Studies were included if they reported on a school-based ED prevention program targeting Australian students. Data were extracted and narratively synthesized. Results: A total of 23 studies were identified, representing a range of universal and selective prevention programs. Programs varied in design, delivery, and target populations, with most focusing on students in Grades 7–8. Universal media literacy programs like Media Smart showed good outcomes for boys and girls, while several selective programs demonstrated improvements in body image for girls. Interventions targeting boys or using mindfulness approaches often lacked effectiveness or caused unintended harm. Major gaps in the literature include a lack of qualitative research, limited long-term follow-up, and minimal focus on protective factors. Conclusion: While a range of ED prevention programs have been trialed in Australian schools, few have been rigorously evaluated or demonstrated sustained effectiveness. There is a need for developmentally appropriate, gender-sensitive, and culturally inclusive prevention efforts in schools. Future research should use diverse methods, include underrepresented groups, assess long-term outcomes, integrate broader sociocultural factors shaping students’ environment, and consider enhancing protective factors. Mindfulness Reduces Adolescent Depression Through Stress Appraisal and Cognitive Reactivity: Evidence from a Four-Wave Longitudinal Study

Background and Objectives: Adolescence is a critical yet vulnerable developmental stage, characterized by increased exposure to stressful life events (SLEs), which are strongly linked to the onset and progression of depression. Although mindfulness has been consistently associated with lower depressive symptoms, the mechanisms underlying this relationship—particularly in adolescents—remain underexplored. Prior research suggests that mindfulness operates through cognitive mechanisms, such as reduced rumination, enhanced emotional regulation, and greater cognitive flexibility. However, much of this work is cross-sectional, limiting causal interpretation and often overlooking distinctions between direct and indirect effects. This study aimed to clarify two proposed pathways through which trait mindfulness may reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents: (1) a direct pathway involving core cognitive–emotional processes, and (2) an indirect pathway, where mindfulness supports more adaptive stress appraisal. A secondary objective was to assess whether these indirect effects vary across different types of stressful life events. Materials and Methods: We analyzed longitudinal data from 3897 adolescents (M_age = 15.9; 51.2% female) across four waves spaced approximately six months apart. Structural equation modeling (AMOS) was used to evaluate both direct and indirect effects of trait mindfulness on depression, with stress domains included in separate analyses. Results: Trait mindfulness was strongly negatively correlated with depression (r = –0.39 to –0.56). The direct effect of mindfulness on depression was substantial (β = –0.60 to –0.74), while indirect effects via cognitive reappraisal were smaller (β = –0.10 to –0.26 for stress reduction; up to –0.17 for depression). Indirect effects varied across stress domains and were generally modest. Conclusions: Mindfulness appears to reduce adolescent depressive symptoms through both direct and indirect pathways. The more pronounced direct effect likely reflects underlying mechanisms, such as reduced rumination and enhanced emotional regulation. Although weaker, the indirect pathway—mediated by more adaptive stress appraisal—adds meaningful explanatory value. Together, these findings underscore mindfulness as a key protective factor and highlight its potential for informing targeted, resilience-based interventions in adolescent mental health. Full article
