Wax-Based Sustained-Release Felodipine Oral Dosage Forms Manufactured Using Hot-Melt Extrusion and Their Resistance to Alcohol-Induced Dose Dumping

Background/Objectives: Hot-melt extrusion (HME) has gained prominence for the manufacture of sustained-release oral dosage forms, yet the application of wax-based matrices and their resilience to alcohol-induced dose dumping (AIDD) remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop and characterise wax-based sustained-release felodipine formulations, with a particular focus on excipient functionality and robustness against AIDD. Methods: Felodipine sustained-release formulations were prepared via HME using Syncrowax HGLC as a thermally processable wax matrix. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and lactose monohydrate were incorporated as functional fillers and processing aids. The influence of wax content and filler type on mechanical properties, wettability, and drug release behaviour was systematically evaluated. Ethanol susceptibility testing was conducted under simulated co-ingestion conditions (4%, 20%, and 40% v/v ethanol) to assess AIDD risk. Results: MCC-containing tablets demonstrated superior sustained-release characteristics over 24 h, showing better wettability and disintegration. In contrast, tablets formulated with lactose monohydrate remained structurally intact during dissolution, overly restricting drug release. This limitation was effectively addressed through granulation, where reduced particle size significantly improved surface accessibility, with 0.5–1 mm granules achieving a satisfactory release profile. Ethanol susceptibility testing revealed divergent behaviours between the two filler systems. Unexpectedly, MCC-containing tablets showed suppressed drug release in ethanolic media, likely resulting from inhibitory effect of ethanol on filler swelling and disintegration. Conversely, formulations containing lactose monohydrate retained their release performance in up to 20% v/v ethanol, with only high concentrations (40% v/v) compromising matrix drug-retaining functionality and leading to remarkably increased drug release. Conclusions: This study highlights the pivotal role of excipient type and constitutional ratios in engineering wax-based sustained-release formulations. It further contributes to the understanding of AIDD risk through in vitro assessment and offers a rational design strategy for robust, alcohol-resistant oral delivery systems for felodipine. Background: South Asian Americans (SAA) are one of the fastest-growing immigrant groups in the U.S. and face significant health disparities, particularly regarding chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Dietary patterns play a crucial role in these disparities, with acculturation to Western diets linked to poorer health outcomes. Despite this, the impact of food insecurity on dietary habits among SAAs remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the availability, cost, and quality of ethnic food items and how food insecurity influences dietary practices in Southern California’s SAA population. Methods: The study was conducted in San Bernardino County, California, with field data collection focused on five South Asian ethnicity-specific grocery stores and three Western grocery stores. We assessed the availability and cost of key ingredients for commonly prepared SAA dishes. Additionally, focus group interviews were held with South Asian immigrants to understand food insecurity challenges and dietary adaptations. Results: The study found significant disparities in food availability and cost between SAA-ethnic grocery stores and Western stores. SAA stores were less accessible and more widely dispersed, with an average distance of 10 miles between them. While ingredients like ginger paste and cumin powder were available in both types of stores, items such as ghee, fenugreek seeds, and black gram were harder to find in Western stores. Focus group participants noted that ethnic foods, especially vegetarian ingredients, were more expensive than Western alternatives, leading many to substitute traditional meals with cheaper, less nutritious options. Participants also raised concerns about the poor quality of items in ethnic stores, such as expired produce, which further limited their food choices. Conclusions: Food insecurity, driven by limited availability, high cost, and poor quality of ethnic foods, poses significant challenges to the SAA community’s diet and health. Addressing these barriers could improve food security and health outcomes among SAA immigrants. Full article

Late sowing and spring low temperatures have a great impact on the growth and maturation of wheat in the rice–wheat rotation region. In order to analyze the impacts of cold stress in February in early spring on yield formation and agronomic traits of wheat on different sowing dates, a controlled pot experiment was performed using the widely promoted and applied spring-type wheat variety Yangmai23 (YM23). The yield of wheat treated with late sowing date II (SDII, 21 November) and overly late sowing date III (SDIII, 9 December) were both lower than that of wheat sown on the suitable date I (SDI, 1 November). The yield of late-sown wheat decreased by 40.82% for SDII and by 66.77% for SDIII, compared with SDI, and these three treatments of wheat all grew under the natural conditions as the control treatments. The plant height, stem diameter of the internode below the ear, flag leaf length and area, and total awn length of the spike, as well as the spike length of late-sown wheat, were all significantly lower than those of wheat in SDI treatment. Early spring low temperatures exacerbated the decline in yield of wheat sown on different dates, to some extent. Despite showing higher net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate in flag leaves of the SDIII treatment under low-temperature stress than those of the other treatments at anthesis, overly late sowing led to minimal leaf area, shorter plant height, fewer tillers, and smaller ears, ultimately resulting in the lowest yield. Our study suggested that additional focus and some regulation techniques are needed to be studied further to mitigate the combined negative impacts of late sowing and low-temperature stress in early spring on wheat production. Milk is a nutritionally rich food and a frequent target of economically motivated adulteration, particularly through substitution with lower-cost milk types. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the authentication of milk using advanced proteomic and chemometric approaches, with a focus on the discovery and application of protein and peptide biomarkers for species differentiation and fraud detection. Recent innovations in both top-down and bottom-up proteomics have markedly improved the sensitivity and specificity of detecting key molecular targets, including caseins and whey proteins. Peptide-based methods are especially valuable in processed dairy products due to their thermal stability and resilience to harsh treatment, although their species specificity may be limited when sequences are conserved across related species. Robust chemometric approaches are increasingly integrated with proteomic pipelines to handle high-dimensional datasets and enhance classification performance. Multivariate techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), are frequently employed to extract discriminatory features and model adulteration scenarios. Despite these advances, key challenges persist, including the lack of standardized protocols, variability in sample preparation, and the need for broader validation across breeds, geographies, and production systems. Future progress will depend on the convergence of high-resolution proteomics with multi-omics integration, structured data fusion, and machine learning frameworks, enabling scalable, specific, and robust solutions for milk authentication in increasingly complex food systems. Metformin is one of the most commonly used medications to treat type 2 diabetes. In addition to lowering blood sugar, it can also promote the regeneration of certain organs or tissues. Planarian Dugesia japonica, with its remarkable regenerative capacity, has become an important model organism for studying pharmacology and regenerative medicine. Planarian eyespot regeneration involves precise tissue regeneration via mechanisms like cell proliferation, differentiation, and gene regulation following body damage. Experiments on planarian eyespot regeneration have confirmed that 1 mM metformin significantly promotes regeneration. Through analysis of the regenerating planarian miRNA database and the metformin-treated transcriptome database, combined with target gene prediction by TargetScan, the DjmiR-27b/DjPax6 axis was finally determined as the research focus. qPCR showed that metformin significantly affects the expression levels of DjmiR-27b and DjPax6. DjPax6 was identified as the target gene of DjmiR-27b through dual luciferase reporter gene analysis. Functional experiments revealed that metformin regulates the expression of DjPax6 via DjmiR-27b, thereby influencing the regeneration of planarian eyespots. In situ hybridization showed that both DjmiR-27b and DjPax6 are expressed throughout the entire body. This study reveals the molecular mechanism of metformin regulating planarian regeneration through miRNA, providing further insights into its role in the field of regeneration. Full article

Research on a Multi-Type Barcode Defect Detection Model Based on Machine Vision

Barcodes are ubiquitous in manufacturing and logistics, but defects can reduce decoding efficiency and disrupt the supply chain. Existing studies primarily focus on a single barcode type or rely on small-scale datasets, limiting generalizability. We propose Y8-LiBAR Net, a lightweight two-stage framework for multi-type barcode defect detection. In stage 1, a YOLOv8n backbone localizes 1D and 2D barcodes in real time. In stage 2, a dual-branch network integrating ResNet50 and ViT-B/16 via hierarchical attention performs three-class classification on cropped regions of interest (ROIs): intact, defective, and non-barcode. Experiments conducted on the public BarBeR dataset, covering planar/non-planar surfaces, varying illumination, and sensor noise, show that Y8-LiBARNet achieves a detection-stage mAP@0.5 = 0.984 (1D: 0.992; 2D: 0.977) with a peak F1 score of 0.970. Subsequent defect classification attains 0.925 accuracy, 0.925 recall, and a 0.919 F1 score. Compared with single-branch baselines, our framework improves overall accuracy by 1.8–3.4% and enhances defective barcode recall by 8.9%. A Cohen’s kappa of 0.920 indicates strong label consistency and model robustness. These results demonstrate that Y8-LiBARNet delivers high-precision real-time performance, providing a practical solution for industrial barcode quality inspection. Full article

This study analyses the physical performance variables involved in different training tasks aimed at replicating the worst-case scenarios (WCSs) observed during official matches in professional football, with a focus on playing positions and occurrences within a 1 min period. Data were collected from 188 training sessions and 42 matches of a Spanish Second Division team during the 2021/2022 season. All data were reported on a per-player basis. GPS tracking devices were used to record physical variables such as total distance, high-speed running (HSR), sprints, accelerations, decelerations, and high metabolic load distance (HMLD). Players were grouped according to their match positions: central defenders, wide players, midfielders and forwards. The results showed that none of the training tasks fully replicated the physical demands of match play. However, task TYPEs 11 (Large-Sided Games) and 9 (small-sided games with orientation and transition) were the closest to match demands, particularly in terms of accelerations and decelerations. Although differences were observed across all variables, the most pronounced discrepancies were observed in sprint and HSR variables, where training tasksfailed to reach 60% of match demands. These findings highlight the need to design more specific drills that simulate the intensity of WCS, allowing for more accurate weekly training load planning. This study offers valuable contributions for optimising performance and reducing injury risk in professional footballers during the competitive period. Full article

Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) often experience abnormalities in bone health. Studies have consistently demonstrated that youth with T1D have lower bone mineral density (BMD) compared to their healthy peers. Additionally, children with T1D show impaired bone microarchitecture and reduced bone turnover. These factors collectively contribute to an increased risk of fractures across the life span of this population. To optimize bone accrual and reduce fracture risk, several strategies can be employed during childhood and adolescence. First, maintaining good glycemic control is critical, as poor glycemic control has been associated with lower BMD and an increased risk of fractures. Second, specific nutritional recommendations can help improve bone health, including a balanced diet, adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, and careful monitoring of both macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Third, regular physical activity plays a vital role. A systematic review and meta-analysis have shown that youth with T1D are generally less physically active, more sedentary, and have lower cardiorespiratory fitness levels than their non-diabetic peers. This review emphasizes targeted strategies aimed at optimizing skeletal health in the pediatric population with T1D, with a particular focus on the critical roles of glycemic control, nutritional adequacy, and regular physical activity. These modifiable factors may contribute to the reduction of fracture risk across the life span in individuals with T1D. Full article

Background: This paper aims to conduct an umbrella review of the effects of physical activity programmes for older adults (aged 70 and above). Methods: Comprehensive literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and Cochrane Library databases for English SRs through July 2024. Inclusion criteria were systematic reviews that included randomised controlled trials examining physical activity interventions in older adults. The data extracted were participant characteristics, physical activity interventions, and outcomes examined. A synthesis of results was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines, and the quality of the studies was assessed using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews-2 (AMSTAR-2). Results: Ten systematic reviews on 186 research articles were included. The AMSTAR-2 revealed that 4 out of 10 reviews were of high quality and 1 out of 10 were of moderate quality. The study samples in each systematic review ranged from 6 to 1254 participants. The total overall sample size for the 10 included studies was 22,652 participants. Across the included reviews, there was mixed evidence on whether physical activity interventions could improve outcomes in older adults across various settings. Conclusions: Sample sizes and findings in each included systematic review varied. The findings of this review emphasise the importance of physical activity as a vital component in maintaining and enhancing health, as well as combating poor health as we age. It also highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the specific physical activity requirements for those aged 70 and above. Future systematic reviews may focus on streamlined reporting of dosing of physical activity and specific intervention types, such as group versus single. Full article

Bispecific antibodies (BsABs) have become a new standard of treatment of refractory/relapsed patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma, being also intensively studied in other types of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). Since the therapy with BsABs results in profound B-cell depletion and T-cell exhaustion, it is associated with significantly increased risk of infections. Additional risk factors involve immune disorders caused by lymphoma itself and previous lines of therapy. In this review, we focus on the infectious complications in B-NHL patients treated BsABs, presenting their incidence in clinical trials, admittedly performed to a large extent during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the proposals of infection prophylaxis. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of conditions, including obesity, insulin resistance (IR), dyslipidemia, and hypertension, that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). While studied often in adults, the increasing prevalence of MetS in children and adolescents underscores the need for its early detection and intervention. Among various biomarkers, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) has gained substantial attention due to its associations with metabolic health and disease. This review provides a comprehensive overview of SHBG and its association with MetS, with a focus on the pediatric and adolescent population. The interplay between SHBG, puberty, and metabolic risk factors is explored, including racial and ethnic variations. SHBG plays a crucial role in transporting sex hormones and regulating their bioavailability and has been found to correlate inversely with obesity and IR, two key components of MetS. Puberty represents a critical period during which hormonal changes and metabolic shifts may further influence SHBG levels and metabolic health. Understanding SHBG’s role in early metabolic risk detection could provide novel insights into the prevention and management of MetS. Full article

This study addresses a critical gap in understanding how mobile banking applications contribute to sustainable development by introducing a novel text mining framework to analyze sustainability dimensions through user-generated content. We analyzed 120,000 reviews from six major Turkish mobile banking applications using an ownership-sensitive analytical approach that integrates structural topic modeling with four sustainability dimensions (environmental, social, governance, and economic). Our analysis reveals significant institutional differences in sustainability approaches: government-owned banks demonstrate substantially stronger overall sustainability orientation (23.43% vs. 11.83% coverage) with pronounced emphasis on social sustainability (+181.7% growth) and economic development (+104.2% growth), while private banks prioritize innovation-focused sustainability. The temporal analysis (2022–2025) shows accelerating sustainability emphasis across all institutions, with distinct evolution patterns by ownership type. Institution-specific sustainability profiles emerge clearly, with each government bank demonstrating distinctive focus areas aligned with historical missions: cultural heritage preservation, agricultural sector support, and small business development. Mapping to Sustainable Development Goals reveals that government banks prioritize development-focused goals (SDGs 1, 8, and 10), while private banks emphasize innovation-focused goals (SDGs 9 and 17). This research makes three key contributions: demonstrating user-generated content as an effective lens for authentic sustainability assessment, establishing ownership-sensitive evaluation frameworks for digital banking sustainability, and providing empirical evidence for contextualized rather than universal sustainability strategies. The findings offer strategic implications for financial institutions, policymakers, and app developers seeking to enhance sustainable digital banking transformation. Full article

In this regard, the development of new methods to treat liver diseases is not possible without understanding the mechanisms of regeneration of this organ. A characteristic reaction of the liver to certain damaging factors is a pronounced cellular plasticity; this primarily concerns hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. This property is also characteristic of Ito stellate cells and macrophages. In this study, we focus on the plasticity of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. We consider such manifestations of plasticity as the ability to enter the mitotic cycle, as well as transdifferentiation. The contribution of each type of plasticity to liver regeneration is considered, as well as the molecular mechanisms providing the cellular plasticity of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. Full article

As a high-market-value sector, the consumer electronics industry is particularly vulnerable to reputational damage from surface defects in shipped products. However, the high level of automation and the short product life cycles in this industry make defect sample collection both difficult and inefficient. This challenge has led to a severe shortage of publicly available, comprehensive datasets dedicated to surface defect detection, limiting the development of targeted methodologies in the academic community. Most existing datasets focus on general-purpose object categories, such as those in the COCO and PASCAL VOC datasets, or on industrial surfaces, such as those in the MvTec AD and ZJU-Leaper datasets. However, these datasets differ significantly in structure, defect types, and imaging conditions from those specific to consumer electronics. As a result, models trained on them often perform poorly when applied to surface defect detection tasks in this domain. To address this issue, the present study introduces a specialized optical sampling system with six distinct lighting configurations, each designed to highlight different surface defect types. These lighting conditions were calibrated by experienced optical engineers to maximize defect visibility and detectability. Using this system, 14,478 high-resolution defect images were collected from actual production environments. These images cover more than six defect types, such as scratches, plain particles, edge particles, dirt, collisions, and unknown defects. After data acquisition, senior quality control inspectors and manufacturing engineers established standardized annotation criteria based on real-world industrial acceptance standards. Annotations were then applied using bounding boxes for object detection and pixelwise masks for semantic segmentation. In addition to the dataset construction scheme, commonly used semantic segmentation methods were benchmarked using the provided mask annotations. The resulting dataset has been made publicly available to support the research community in developing, testing, and refining advanced surface defect detection algorithms under realistic conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive, multiclass, multi-defect dataset for surface defect detection in the consumer electronics domain that provides pixel-level ground-truth annotations and is explicitly designed for real-world applications. In this study, we explore the paired disjunctive domination number—a recently introduced parameter by Henning et al.—within the broader framework of graph and network sensitivity and vulnerability analysis. Building on this concept, we introduce and investigate the paired disjunctive bondage number (PDBN), which measures the minimum number of edge deletions required to increase the paired disjunctive domination number of a graph or its corresponding network model. We begin by computing this new bondage number for several well-known network classes. The focus then shifts to specific families of trees, where we first determine their paired disjunctive domination numbers in detail. Using these values, we calculate the corresponding bondage numbers for various structurally symmetric, hierarchical, and compound tree structures, including double star, comet, double comet, Ept, and binomial trees, all of which model different types of infrastructural networks. Finally, we present an algorithm for computing PDBN, accompanied by a complexity analysis, and illustrate the practical relevance of the parameter through a case study applying it to a real-life network problem. Our results offer foundational insights into the behavior of this new domination parameter and its bondage variant, contributing to the growing literature on graph vulnerability and suggesting potential applications in the design of resilient and failure-aware networks.
